Quinshon Judkins legal update could delay return to Browns

imagn-26144289.jpg

The Cleveland Browns are a month away from starting the 2025 regular season and just one day away from their first preseason action. In a season that seems to be all about the quarterback position and developing the young roster, the Browns do not have RB Quinshon Judkins, their second-round pick this year, under contract or with the team.

The contract impasse was likely to be overcome once other second-rounders signed, but Judkins’ arrest on a domestic violence charge is the primary concern at this point.

Generally, the NFL has allowed the legal process to play out before rendering any discipline. For Cleveland and Judkins’ agents, how guaranteed money (which is generally voided based on these types of charges) is handled might make things difficult in that realm as well.

A recent update to the Broward County court records might delay everything related to Judkins’ time in the NFL. The record shows, as first reported by Spencer Germain, that Judkins has waived his right to a speedy trial:

Judkins.png

Germain noted in his social media post that this waiver extends the time the state has to try Judkins from 60 days of his arrest to, now, 175 days.

We will continue to keep you updated as more official information comes along.

The results are in: Browns fans choose between Gage Larvadain and Luke Floriea

imagn-26431452.jpg

It’s no secret that the Cleveland Browns have gotten some excellent production from two UDFA wide receivers this offseason in Gage Larvadain and Luke Floriea.

We recently conducted a community poll via X/Twitter in “THE FEED” section of the revamped website, which is an excellent new feature for DawgsbyNature.com. It’s an area where Browns fans and staff members can engage with each other all day, every day.

The first poll asked the question:

Alright #DawgPound, you can only keep one of these UDFA WRs. Which one are you choosing to keep on the 53-man roster in 2025?

Alright #DawgPound, you can only keep one of these UDFA WRs.

Which one are you choosing to keep on the 53-man roster in 2025?#Browns #NFL

— Matt Wilson (@CoachWilson66) August 7, 2025

With only an hour or so left on the 24-hour poll, the results are fairly one-sided so far. 285 votes (64%) have gone to Luke Floriea and 161 votes (36%) to Gage Larvadain.

This is honestly pretty surprising. Though Floriea is a local kid and has looked pretty solid throughout his time in Berea this summer, Larvadain has undoubtedly been the more “exciting” player who’s consistently on the receiving end of big plays.

Each one of these guys has their own set of areas in which they excel, and both are traits that usually translate well over to the NFL game. Floriea is an incredibly quick and sudden mover who’s able to get separation early on in the play, and Larvadain has shown to be excellent at the catch point and knows how to create after the catch.

We get to see both of these players in a live game setting tonight as Cleveland takes on Carolina in their 1st preseason game of the year.

Shedeur Sanders passes the test, shows great poise in Browns’ 30-10 preseason win over Panthers

gettyimages-2229151602.jpg

The Cleveland Browns kicked off their preseason with a 30-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers. QB Shedeur Sanders was under center for much of the game, and fans across the country were curious how the popular quarterback would do, despite technically being fourth on the team’s depth chart. Let’s get to the full game recap to see how he did.

1st Quarter – Browns vs. Panthers

The Browns got the opening kickoff, putting Sanders on offense immediately. After a handoff to RB Dylan Sampson for 5 yards, Sanders’ first pass was a quick slant to WR Diontae Johnson, but it was a tad high or too hot and off his hands. On 3rd-and-5, Sanders threw a quick-hitter to WR Kaden Davis for four yards, but he ran his route just shy of the sticks.

P Corey Bojorquez came on and boomed a 62-yard punt, and then the Browns’ defense forced a three-and-out to get the ball right back to the offense. On that defensive third down, DE Alex Wright and DE Sam Kamara were credited with the coverage sack. Cleveland’s next offensive possession began at their own 39 yard line.

— Cleveland Browns (@Browns) August 8, 2025

Sanders’ second drive was a mixed bag. He scrambled for one first down on third down, and threw a nice strike to WR Jamari Thrash for 11 yards to set up a 4th-and-1 at the Panthers’ 26 yard line. Cleveland went for it, and had Sanders in Shotgun with an empty formation. When he felt pressure, Sanders tried rolling out and ended up running about 20 yards backwards before throwing it away for a turnover on downs.

no one is out of their break by the time the pressure hits, idk man. can’t eat the sack but not a lot of options here pic.twitter.com/bOD33RWG2q

— Jordan Zirm (@JordanZirm) August 8, 2025

The Panthers’ next offensive drive started off much better for them as QB Bryce Young found the 8th overall pick in the draft, WR Tetairoa McMillan, for 29 yards up the right sideline. A few plays later, on a 3rd-and-5, Cleveland jumped offsides on the edge, giving Carolina a fresh set of downs. Carolina continued chipping their way forward via the air, setting up a 1st-and-goal at the 8 yard line. On 3rd-and-goal, Young did a good job escaping from the pocket and directing his receiver back to the inside before throwing him a touchdown pass to put the Panthers up 7-0.

This was the electric version of Bryce Young we saw the second half of last season for the #Panthers.

Great pocket awareness, doesn’t bail too early and directs traffic to find Jalen Coker for 6. You can’t play quarterback much better than this.pic.twitter.com/T2Wr614lRP

— Jordan Schultz (@Schultz_Report) August 8, 2025

Sanders went three-and-out on his next drive again, sending Bojorquez out for a second time. He skied it, and the Panthers tried to make a fair catch — but traffic got in the way, leading to a muff and Cleveland LB Nathaniel Watson recovering at the Panthers’ 10 yard line with 36 seconds remaining in the quarter.

The first down handoff went to RB Ahmani Marshall, who made 3 yards out of nothing. They ran out the clock from there.

2nd Quarter – Browns vs. Panthers

Beginning with a 2nd-and-goal from the 7 yard line, Sanders lined up under center and ran a playaction fake to his left before throwing a nice touchdown pass to WR Kaden Davis in the back left corner to tie the game at 7-7:

— Cleveland Browns (@Browns) August 8, 2025

Veteran QB Andy Dalton then came on for the Panthers. On his first third down, Dalton rolled out and lofted a pass to a receiver for 20 yards that was bobbled, but ruled a catch. Dalton hurried to the line to get another play off and prevent a challenge. A few plays later, DE Julian Okwara came off the edge and immediately sacked Dalton after a poor block by the left tackle.

The Panthers punted, and WR Luke Floriea and bobbled the ball before trying to run around and salvage the play, forcing Cleveland to start their next drive at the 6 yard line. On third down, Sanders delivered his best pass of the evening, hanging in there in the end zone as two defenders were coming and hitting WR Greg Larvadain for 19 yards and a first down. The rest of the drive stalled out, though — including a play that was nearly intercepted on another attempt at Larvadain. After Bojorquez’ punt, Carolina took back over at their own 23 yard line.

Carolina punted right back to Cleveland, and Davis had a nice 17-yard return out to the Browns’ own 42 yard line. Sanders came up with another highlight when he rolled out and found Floriea for 29 yards, lofting it over the defense and also getting a nice one-hand snag by the local product.

Several plays later, on 1st-and-10 from the 12 yard line, Sanders avoided the blitz, got a nice block from his back, stayed in the pocket, and fired another touchdown pass to Davis over the middle. That gave the Browns a 14-7 lead with 1:04 left in the first half.

The defense forced a stop, and Sanders took a knee to send the game to halftime. His first half stats: 11-of-18 for 103 yards, 2 TD, and 19 yards rushing.

3rd Quarter – Browns vs. Panthers

The Browns’ defense forced a three-and-out to begin the second half, including some good coverage by the cornerbacks. On the Panthers’ punt, it was Larvadain’s time for a return, and he got 30 yards on the return. Cleveland couldn’t take advantage of the field position, as Sanders was sacked on third down and had words with one of his receivers after the play. The Panthers took over at their own 20 yard line after another Bojorquez punt.

Not much clock was running off, but both teams were trading punts. Pre-snap penalties started hitting the Browns too, as one would think that Sanders’ time might be winding down. Bojorquez punted from his own 16 yard line, and the Panthers returned it to their own 38 yard line mid-way through the quarter. Just as I said that, though, DB Nik Needham picked off an errant pass from Dalton, giving the Browns good field position at the Panthers’ 48 yard line.

— Cleveland Browns (@Browns) August 9, 2025

A few plays later, Sanders found TE Brenden Bates for a 25 yard gain. A few good runs by RB Ahmani Marshall got them inside the 10 yard line, eventually leading to a 3rd-and-3 at the 5 yard line. A running play got half the distance, setting up 4th-and-2 from the 4 yard line. Sanders lined up under center and gave the ball to Larvadain on the jet sweep, and he took it in for the 2-yard touchdown run and a 21-7 lead (even though I swear it looked like K Dustin Hopkins missed the extra point, they counted it).

— Cleveland Browns (@Browns) August 9, 2025

The Panthers got the ball past midfield, but faced a fourth down from the Browns’ 43 yard line and went for it. The pass was incomplete for a turnover on downs. With 2:12 to go in the third quarter, QB Tyler Huntley came in at quarterback.

4th Quarter – Browns vs. Panthers

Huntley then led the Browns’ offense down the field, into the red zone. The defense came up with a stop, though, so Kevin Stefanski decided to use this as an opportunity to get the field goal team some work. Hopkins came on for a 23 yard field goal, which was right down the middle to give Cleveland a 24-7 lead.

Okwara notched another sack on defense for Cleveland, and Huntley and the offense got the ball again with 11 minutes to go. Cleveland kept using the run game to drain some clock, but then Huntley finished the drive with a few passes, including a playaction touchdown pass to WR Cade McDonald from 6 yards out. The extra point was missed this time, making it a 30-7 game.

we just keep on rolling 🙌#CLEvsCAR on NFLN, @WEWS & NFL+ pic.twitter.com/4wSyTdExMp

— Cleveland Browns (@Browns) August 9, 2025

The Panthers faced a 4th-and-4 at the Browns’ 14 yard line heading to the two-minute warning. They opted to kick a 32-yard field goal to make it a 30-10 game. The Browns kneeled the ball out from there.

Preseason Game 1 Quick Hitters

  • All eyes were on QB Shedeur Sanders, and he delivered a decent performance, given the circumstances. Those circumstances include the fact that the first part of the game featured the second-team offense against the Panthers’ first-team defense. I thought Sanders showed good poise, and although he had a few erratic scrambles, he seemed to have a knack for natural escapability. He throws a good ball, but a lot of what we saw were first reads. Cleveland was 3-for-3 in the red zone, converting on touchdowns. As Joe Flacco said during a mid-game interview, “the moment is not too big” for him.
  • In the Browns’ wide receiver race, WR Kaden Davis who stepped up, catching two touchdown passes in the first half and also having a good punt return. However, WR Luke Floriea and WR Greg Larvadain had nice plays too.
  • QB Shedeur Sanders: 14-of-23 for 138 yards, 2 TD. 4 rushes, 19 yards.
  • WR Kaden Davis: 3 catches, 23 yards, 2 TD.

  • According to Pro Football Focus, despite just having 13 snaps, rookie LB Carson Schwesinger had an impactful game. He had tackles on nearly half of the snaps he played in:
The rookie second-round pick made three run stops on just five run-defense snaps, leading to a game-high PFF run-defense grade, pending reviews. His night ended after one quarter, but that was all he needed to announce himself to the league.
  • On the defensive line, DT Mason Graham only played 13 snaps. DL Adin Huntington got a sack, and I rarely mention special teams tackles in defensive stats, but I’m obligated here because he had 4 special teams tackles. DL Julian Okwara also registered 2 sacks. Those things may help get some guys on the practice squad or claimed by another team, but the Browns are already pretty stacked on the defensive line when it comes to the numbers game. Veterans Alex Wright and Isaiah McGuire played 10 or fewer snaps before departing.
  • I liked Winston Reid a year ago and still like I what I see from him. With Jordan Hicks retired and JOK out for the year, you’d think it’s easier for him to secure a linebacker spot — but the team also did add Jerome Baker, so we’ll see.
  • Tony Brown played a lot of snaps and had some nice plays, but it’s still tough to determine who the Browns’ third cornerback will be. I think the most optimal scenario would be if last year’s 7th round pick, Myles Harden, wins the role and turns out to be a gem.
  • Besides the rookie draft picks, Ronnie Hickman was another starter who saw some snaps.
  • The Browns’ defense allowed 1 touchdown, held the Panthers to 25% on third down, allowed 251 yards of offense, and logged 4 sacks.

Browns schedule for Eagles week including joint practices

usa_today_21242239.jpg

As Thomas Moore titled this morning’s Daily Dawg Chow, for the Cleveland Browns and most of their fans, it is Shedeur Sanders’ world right now and we are just living in it. Could Friday night’s debut (you can see analysis of all of his throws and decisions here) be the first step toward Sanders becoming the fifth-round version of Tom Brady? Browns fans can only hope.

Cleveland fans have also been let down too many times to get their hopes too far up and the Browns would probably be right in playing everything slow and cautious with Sanders early this season.

After one joint practice with the Carolina Panthers prior to the first preseason game, the team will once again travel from Berea to have practices, this time against the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. The Browns will have two practices matched up against the reigning best in the league. Depending on the health of Kenny Pickett’s and Dillon Gabriel’s hamstrings, Sanders could get a big test in practice this week.

Here is the current schedule, mostly lacking times, in Berea and Philadelphia this week:

Browns star pulled over for speeding, again

2168070338.jpg

The Cleveland Browns are coming off an impressive Week 1 preseason performance against the Carolina Panthers, with a chance to build on things in Week 2 against the Philadelphia Eagles. Joint practices will likely see the majority of the star-on-star action with limited action for the starters during Saturday’s early afternoon matchup.

QB Shedeur Sanders was the star of the show against the Panthers, but could see less time against the Eagles, with QBs Dillon Gabriel and Kenny Pickett seeing action in practice on Monday. DE Myles Garrett is one of the stars who could be held out in the game but could benefit from practicing against Philadelphia’s talented offensive line.

Garrett’s name is also back in the headlines for his driving.

In 2022, Garrett injured his shoulder and was cited with failure to control and speeding due to an accident during the early part of the season. Now, like Sanders earlier this offseason, Garrett has been ticketed for going 100 miles per hour:

#Browns star defensive end Myles Garrett was pulled over early Saturday morning at 2:01 am for speeding in Strongsville.

Browns roster may have found their swing backup OLineman

gettyimages-2218827619.jpg

The Cleveland Browns potentially have a huge problem with their offensive line: Both offensive tackles are injury-prone.

Did you get that? Both RT Jack Conklin and LT Dawand Jones get hurt. Frequently. That means they miss a lot of games. Conklin is entering his 10th season, with five years already with Cleveland. He has missed 35 games with his last full season in 2019 while with the Tennessee Titans. Jones has only played two seasons and has just 17 starts, so he has missed a full schedule of games so far.

RELATED: 5 BIGGEST TAKEAWAYS FROM CLEVELAND’S FIRST PRESEASON GAME

They are both part of a group that was ranked the #3 O-Line group just two years ago, with the only roster change being LT Jed Wills in then instead of Jones. This computes that four of the five Browns starters are the same guys who made this an elite group. Raise your hand if you think that Jones is an upgrade from Wills. So, this is an improved unit that was ranked #3 the season before last.

What are the Browns’ tentative plans if, or when, either Conklin goes down, or Jones? Or both? That has already happened twice in two years.

Cleveland had several seasoned veterans on the roster who were ready to fill in, such as Hakeem Adeniji, James Hudson, Geron Christian, and Germain Ifedi. But both Hudson and Adeniji ended up on IR, and none of the foursome were re-signed for 2025 along with Wills.

Browns GM Andrew Berry did attempt to secure another quality backup by inking OT Cronelius Lucas from the Washington Commanders on March 12 during the free agency period. It was expected that Berry would then grab a young buck in the NFL draft this past April, but that came and went without another body added to the O-Line room. Undrafted rookie free agent Jason Ivey out of North Carolina A&T was added, and Cleveland did re-sign several who were on the practice squad last season.

A pair of @RhodyFootball alums have signed as rookie free agents. OL Lorenzo Thompson (Browns) and DB Jordan Colbert (Dolphins) have both agreed to deals. #URI #Rams https://t.co/X8atFVH1BT

— Bill Koch (@BillKoch25) May 10, 2024

Against the Carolina Panthers in the first preseason game, one name surfaced that seems to be able to rise above the training camp competition, and just could become the answer to another dependable backup: OT Lorenzo Thompson.

Thompson (6’-6”, 305 pounds) played offensive tackle at the University of Rhode Island, but against the Panthers, he was inserted into Joel Bitonio’s left guard spot. And he shone.

Maybe it was fitting that Thompson was playing Bitonio’s regular spot. They have some similarities.

Bitonio played for a minor college program, although still D-1 while attending Nevada. Although he grew up in Southern California and had quite a few high school accolades, the bigger Power 5 schools never reached out like nearby USC or UCLA, or other programs like Oregon, Colorado, or Washington.

Thompson had a similar trek. Despite being named First Team All-Section 3 as an offensive tackle for Cicero North High School in Syracuse, New York, which went 20-2-0 in his final two seasons, he had zero offers. He then signed on to play for the University of Rhode Island.

At Rhode Island, a D-1 FCS school, he played in 46 games with 37 consecutive starts. They started him one game as a freshman, and in his second year, he became the full-time starter at left tackle. In his junior year, he was named Third Team All-Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) as he blocked for the third-highest scoring offense in the conference, scoring 30.6 points a game on average.

In his senior campaign, he was elected Captain, named First Team All-CAA, voted Third Team Phil Steele All-American, and named to the New England Football Writers Association All-New England Team. He also represented Rhode Island at the Hula Bowl.

Editor’s note: Thompson is lined up at left tackle, wearing jersey #78

And like Bitonio, whose college team rarely played any of the big-time programs, Thompson’s teams regularly competed against William & Mary, Towson State, Villanova, and Hampton. The comparisons began that while Thompson played well at this plateau, could he really compete at the NFL level?

Apparently, that answer was no because he wasn’t selected in the 2024 NFL draft. Two weeks after the draft had concluded, Thompson signed a free agent deal with Cleveland. He had a decent training camp but didn’t wow anyone and became a last-day cut, then was signed to the practice squad, where he remained all season despite being considered one of the better offensive tackles at the FCS level, as he started three years.

— Velocity Football Academy™ (@Velocity_FB) March 6, 2025

But Thompson appears different in this year’s camp. He trained extensively during the off-season, and it is showing. He has been slotted at right tackle and also left guard, so the versatility is there. He’s technically sound with good footwork.

As far as moving to guard, he still needs to prove that he can play with the pad level and become a blocking partner with the two players on each side of him. At tackle, a player rarely depends upon the guy next to him because he is on this island. But guards have to work in tandem with pulling, double-teams, and work on who takes who with stunts. Plus, hand quickness becomes essential.

Thompson is athletic as a move blocker with good hand quickness. He is also patient willing to allow his defender to declare his intentions and has good acceleration as well.

The knock on him this year and last is that he has short arms and narrow shoulders. That is a big problem for a tackle, but being moved to guard, Thompson may have found his groove. Last year, he was strictly an offensive tackle, so the fact that defenders will land first hands isn’t such an issue, where he had to continually remain in front of speed rushers right off the snap.

More importantly, he doesn’t get hurt.

Against the Panthers, Thompson played on 51 of 66 offensive snaps, the most of any offensive lineman. While other second-team O-Line guys were shuffled in and out, Thompson remained. He blocked for both quarterbacks with a group that protected really well in the game and were able to allow both QBs more time to throw. Carolina had three sacks, but none were from Thompson’s man. His man, second-string NT Shy Tuttle, had two tackles and one QB hit. Tuttle’s replacement, Cam Jackson, notched one tackle.

Thompson played solidly. Now, it should be pointed out that he had just two offensive series against actual starters. The remainder of the first half was strictly second-teamers, and the final two quarters were second, third, and fourth-place guys on the depth chart. Everyone gets that.

But Thompson wasn’t chasing his man down all night. Or trying to stop jailbreak with the guy in front of him. He did his job as a depth guy against other depth guys.

The Browns are heavily seeking dependable players to be at the ready.

Every year, head coach Kevin Stefanski and Berry have kept 10 offensive linemen on the final cutdown, and every year, the Browns employ about 30 by the time the season has concluded.

Thompson is on his way to solidify a backup role at both starting offensive tackle spots and at guard, making him valued as an OT3/swing guard prospect who will also be able to enter the game as that sixth lineman on jumbo yardage plays.

Browns roster: Add defender, waive recently signed WR

gettyimages-1763710851.jpg

Like most teams, the Cleveland Browns are regularly making adjustments to their roster throughout training camp. Whether it is due to injuries, poor performance or just general need on the roster, players in the back half of the 90-man are far from secure in their positions.

On Monday, the Browns made five roster moves, including waiving WR Luke Floriea with an injury designation:

The Cleveland Browns have signed CB Christian Holmes and CB Darius Rush. In addition, the team has waived WR Luke Floriea (injury designation) and T Roy Mbaeteka. The club has also designated T Kilian Zierer as the team’s international player.

Tuesday, before the team headed out to meet the Philadelphia Eagles for joint practices and the second preseason game, Cleveland made two other moves:

  • Signed DE Titus Leo
  • Waived WR Chase Cota

Cota was signed a week and a half ago after a workout with four other players. He was targeted twice in the preseason opener but did not record a reception.

Leo was a sixth-round pick of the Indianapolis Colts in 2023 but was injured his rookie season and picked off the Colts practice squad by the New England Patriots last year. In four games (nine snaps on defense, 77 on special teams, Leo had four tackles including one for a loss with the Patriots.

After being waived during the offseason, Leo joined the Tennessee Titans before being waived earlier this month.

Then, MJ Emerson went down with an Achilles injury during the July 29 practice during a 7-on-7 drill while he was covering WR Diontae Johnson. It was a scary sight seeing him in obvious agony, lying on the turf. He was then carted off the field. It was later determined to be a torn tendon instead of a lesser partial tear. Surgery was required, and Emerson ended up on season-ending IR.

This has become a big blow to DC Jim Schwartz’s defensive secondary.

The thought process going into camp was that at least the defensive secondary remained top-tier. Despite Emerson having an off year last season, he was thought to he would rebound and bust out to a Pro Bowl level.

Now, his replacement will either come from the current roster of Nik Needham, Chigozie Anusiem, Cam Mitchell, Myles Harden, Dom Jones, or newly-signed Keenan Isaac, or Schwartz may move Greg Newsome from the slot to the outside corner position where he began his Browns career. There is also the possibility that Browns GM Andrew Berry may bring in a seasoned free agent.

But for now, Emerson is out for the year and recently had surgery to correct his left Achilles rupture.

What exactly is an Achilles injury?

It is damage to the Achilles tendon, which is a fibrous cord that connects the calf muscles to the heel bone located on the backside of the foot, just above the heel.

There are three types of Achilles injuries. “Achilles Tendonitis” is inflammation of the tendon, which is caused by overuse. “Achilles Tendinosis” is degeneration of the tendon due to the result of an injury. Finally, “Achilles Tenon Rupture” is a complete tear and is the most severe, which snaps the tendon in two.

The Dawgs – A Cleveland Browns Podcast

The pain is tremendous. Running is no longer an option, and good luck with walking without assistance. After surgery, a walking boot or cast, along with crutches or a walker, is mandatory in order to keep weight off the injury. Recovery is anywhere from several months to a solid year, with physical therapy a must.

Emerson was selected by the Browns in the third round of the 2022 NFL draft. By mid-season, he had ousted Newsome from his right outside cornerback spot opposite Ward. In just his second season of 2023, he had a sensational season that was Pro Bowl-worthy.

This is the final year of MJ’s rookie contract. Truly, it is a setback for not only Emerson but for this Browns defense.

Dawgs by Nature’s Barry Shuck was able to contact Emerson’s dad, Martin Emerson, Sr., to discuss the surgery and what the future holds for MJ.

The Emerson family calls the son MJ for “Martin, Junior,” and the dad “Martin.” The father was a pretty good athlete himself as a competitive swimmer, doing the 100-meter breast freestyle and a member of his high school’s dive team. The family is Christian.

Despite 18 college offers from programs such as Miami, Florida, Auburn, Oregon, and Maryland, Martin, Sr. pushed his son to play college football at Mississippi State because of the small-town surroundings and isolation from larger cities. In essence, this was geared to keep any athlete out of trouble with a focus on football. Plus, it reminded the family of the medium-sized city MJ grew up in back home in Pensacola, Florida, home of Emmitt Smith, Don Sutton, Roy Jones, Jr., among others, plus the Blue Angels Navy aerial stunt team.

DBN: First of all, how is MJ after his surgery?

Martin, Sr:
This was his first surgery in his life. He has never even had his tonsils out. This was the first time being put under anesthesia and being put to sleep, prepping for surgery, and being that hurt. But right now, he is in good spirits and looking forward to working to get back to playing shape.

DBN: When did he go in for surgery, and how long did it take?

Martin, Sr:
The surgery took 20 minutes at UAB in Birmingham. He went the next afternoon.

DBN: Who was the surgeon?

Martin, Sr:
That facility is part of the Andrews Institute. Dr. Norman Waldrop.

Editor’s note: The primary campus of the Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center is located in Gulf Breeze, Florida, just outside the city limits of Pensacola

DBN: Is this a doctor the Browns recommended, or set up to do the procedure?

Martin, Sr:
We wanted to use Andrews Institute, and so we chose the surgeon. We could have used the team doctor or another doctor associated with the Browns. But if MJ ever has to go back to Pensacola during any of his rehab, then he will just use their facility right over the bridge and continue what he needs. The Browns set up the surgery, though.

DBN: How was MJ’s spirits during pre-op?

Martin, Sr:
He doesn’t like needles. When I first got there, he was down and more worried about getting down the road to recovery. But getting ready for surgery, he was surprisingly upbeat and ready to start his healing process.

DBN: The injury was during the Thursday practice, but what exactly happened?

Martin, Sr:
He was coming out of a break during drills covering Diontae (Johnson), his foot was planted, and when he turned, he heard a pop. He said he knew exactly what that was. He wasn’t engaged with the receiver other than some hand play, just turned, and his foot didn’t release the turf in time. It was a non-contact injury.

DBN: Did MJ say this was a pretty painful injury?

Martin, Sr:
He said the pain was indescribable. That was crazy with what happened. He said he had felt it earlier and felt a little tight. Typically, it loosens up.

— Scott Petrak ct (@ScottPetrak) July 29, 2025

DBN: After they carted MJ off the practice field, where did they take him?

Martin, Sr:
They took him to the medical facility there at the practice facility in Berea.

DBN: An Achilles can either be a partial tear or a completely torn tendon. When did they determine it was the worst-case scenario?

Martin, Sr:
The same day actually. They did an MRI and confirmed what it was. It was a clean tear with all the tendons still together.

Even if it was partial, would that change the outcome/need to do surgery?

— BSD energy🗽 (@therealSMiDT) July 29, 2025

DBN: And did the process go pretty quickly from prognosis to scheduling surgery?

Martin, Sr:
All in one day. He was practicing one day and preparing for surgery the next afternoon. After I found out exactly what it was, I went from the airport to the hospital and met with the surgeon.

DBN: Where were you when you found out, and how did word get to you about his injury?

Martin, Sr:
I was eating lunch with another contractor. I told him about my son getting injured and leaving without finishing, and he said he would take care of the lunch situation. MJ’s agent called me.

DBN: Did you fly up from Pensacola before the surgery began?

Martin, Sr:
I was on a plane the next morning. Tickets aren’t cheap when you don’t buy them way in advance like that. Over $700, and that’s one way. I tried to get a flight out that night, but the last flight out was delayed some kinda way, so I took the 5:30 a.m. flight out of Pensacola with a stop in Atlanta.

DBN: What was MJ’s workout routine like this off-season?

Martin, Sr:
He worked his tail off and wanted this year to be special. Everyone on the defense has been talking about getting back to being elite. All off-season, he worked and trained. That’s pretty much all he did. If he took a trip, he scheduled training into his time and prepared for the year.

DBN: He didn’t fall off his bike and skin his knee, or is out for a few games. As a father, what do you say to your son to make this better once you both learned his entire season was lost?

Martin, Sr:
As his father, I told him that God didn’t make any mistakes. We are a faith-based family and understand the dynamics of that. He was emotional the first day, but he understood. He told me that he would just have to work to get back. We don’t always understand; it’s all part of God’s plan for us.

DBN: Tell me about when the surgeon came out after the procedure was completed. What did he say to you and your family?

Martin, Sr:
MJ took a while to come out of anesthesia, so that was to be expected if you don’t know what to expect. The surgeon said everything went well and there weren’t any surprises, and that MJ will be good to go.

DBN: What is his timeline for full recovery?

Martin, Sr:
Six to eight months.

DBN: Is he in a cast or a walking boot? Crutches, walker, or wheelchair?

Martin, Sr:
Right now, he is in a walking boot, but next week they are putting him in a cast. I am flying back on that day to be with him and help him get around the first few days. He is using a scooter to get around. It took him a couple of days to get used to it. Three weeks now?

DBN: Does that involve extensive rehab? Where will that be done?

Martin, Sr:
He goes to rehab every other day at the practice facility. Every other day, he is working. And then after they clear him to begin walking, then start some light jogging, he will probably be there every day. It’s a slow process and has to allow the tendon to heal. The important thing about this injury is not to do anything too strenuous before it has healed fully. The worst thing is to have to start all over again.

DBN: After recovery, have the doctors indicated that there may be some changes to his physical and athletic abilities, or will he be as good as new?

Martin, Sr:
The doctor said if he sticks to their plan, he will be back to his normal self. He won’t be slowed down or lose any part of his game. Which, when you think about it, playing cornerback is a lot of cutting and change of direction. As long as he allows it to heal, nothing new will change him, and he’ll be ready to go.

DBN: If it was a non-contact injury, could this have been prevented, or was it just one of those freaks of nature?

Martin, Sr:
Another freak of nature injury.

RELATED: INTERVIEW WITH CADDIX CLEATS CEO

DBN: There is a new cleat called Caddix that has studs that move, which is supposed to eliminate non-contact injuries from happening. What brand of cleats was he wearing? Is Caddix something MJ will wear from now on?

Martin, Sr:
Nike. He should look into those cleats so that this doesn’t happen again.

— Scott Petrak ct (@ScottPetrak) July 30, 2025

DBN: The loss of MJ for the season is a huge blow for this Browns defense. Which coaches have visited or reached out?

Martin, Sr:
I don’t really know which ones, but they were really concerned about him and his well-being.

DBN: MJ had an off year last season, but is a quick learner with a high football IQ and worked really hard this offseason. In his first two seasons he played at a high level; now the injury erases his contract year. Any expectations on what the team will do as far as a new deal going forward?

Martin, Sr:
We don’t really know what the expectations will be with the Browns. Hopefully, they will see that he is a valuable part of this defense.

DBN: After the 2023 season, in which MJ had a tremendous year, how shocked were you that he did not get named to the Pro Bowl?

Martin, Sr:
I was surprised but not shocked. Throughout his entire career, he has had to work to get his playing time and had good players that played phenomenal ball ahead of him that forced him to work harder and stay on the radar. He was always a frontrunner, but he was never in front. Wholeheartedly, we think that was a God design. It is okay for somebody else to get most of the credit; he just wants to play and play well.

DBN: Ever since MJ arrived in Cleveland, he has had to compete to win a job. First, it was Greedy Williams, then Troy Hill, and finally Greg Newsome. Somebody will now be playing his starting role on this defense this year. When he returns next year, how concerned are you that he will have to start over to prove the outside cornerback spot opposite Denzel Ward still belongs to him?

Martin, Sr:
Not concerned about that at all. The entire organization knows who he is. They know who he is on the field and off the field. Nobody ever has a problem with him, and you won’t see his name in a negative light in the paper. They know he is a key starter. Now, will he have to work to get back into the lineup? Certainly. And we will root for his replacement to play well every Sunday.

DBN: MJ has always been durable. Going back to his high school days, has he ever had any type of injury?

Martin, Sr:
He has never been injured – ever. Except for a sore muscle or some minor ding, he always played through it. With the Browns, he went out of one game and came back the next week like nothing ever happened.

DBN: What should Browns fans expect from MJ in the 2026 season?

Martin, Sr:
A hungry individual. More mature, and a young man who will work to fulfill his purpose. I know how much he worked to get ready for this season, and he will be that much hungrier next year.

Browns roster: Who needs a great preseason game the most?

2219029248.jpg

There are still many unanswered questions about who will be on the Cleveland Browns initial 53-man roster. Preseason is a great opportunity for players on the bubble to demonstrate that they deserve a spot. There will be another great opportunity to prove that this weekend when the Browns take on the Philadelphia Eagles at 1:00 PM EST on Saturday.

The defending Super Bowl champs should be a formidable opponent, even in the preseason, and it will be important for the coaching staff to see who steps up to the challenge.

Which Browns player needs a great preseason game the most?

Second-year wide receiver Jamari Thrash is a player who could greatly benefit from a nice preseason performance. He has made an impact at training camp this summer, but Cleveland still needs to see if these improvements will carry over into actual game situations. The Browns’ wide receiver group is lacking in talent – PFF ranked them as the worst receiving corps going into the 2025 season. If Thrash can take that next step, he could become a massive part of this team’s game plan in 2025.

Given all the conversations around the quarterbacks, many might be intrigued to see quarterback Dillon Gabriel, if he is able to play, as well.

Let me know what you think in the comments – Which Browns player needs a great preseason game the most?

WR Isaiah Bond cleared of charges, says he is signing with Browns

gettyimages-2193324692.jpg

The Cleveland Browns could not only be getting running back Quinshon Judkins back on the field soon, but could see reinforcements to their passing game with wide receiver Isaiah Bond as well. Bond is a speedy, explosive receiver who was expected to be drafted in the second round of the 2025 NFL draft before sexual assault allegations led to him being undrafted.

Earlier Thursday, reports came out that Bond no longer faced any criminal charges (legally called “no-billed”) from the case that saw him fall out of the draft:

The sexual assault case against former Texas wide receiver Isaiah Bond has been no-billed and he faces no further criminal charges, his agent, Damien Butler told ESPN on Thursday.https://t.co/5WFwwFlryW

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) August 14, 2025

Bond spent two seasons at Alabama before transferring to Texas in 2025. In his one season with the Longhorns, Bond put up five touchdowns along with almost 16 yards per reception (Totals: 34 receptions, 540 receiving yards, 15.9 yards per reception, 5 TDs). All told, he appeared in 41 games in college and finished with 99 receptions for 1,428 yards, 14.4 yards per catch, and 10 receiving touchdowns.

Bond announced on social media that he is signing with the Browns, but ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting nothing is official:

Isaiah Bond announced he plans to sign with the Cleveland Browns, but no deal has been finalized, per sources. https://t.co/XTTsIqFZB8

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) August 14, 2025

In the announcement, Bond expressed his “deepest gratitude” to the Browns for believing in him and giving him a chance to play in the NFL. He also wrote that he “will learn from this experience as I grow in wisdom, character, and faith.”

In his profile of Bond prior to the 2025 NFL Draft, our own Matt Wilson wrote how Bond would fit with the Browns:

Isaiah Bond possesses the blazing speed and explosive playmaking ability that Cleveland’s offense needs in order to take the next step in 2025.

His choppy feet and ability to accelerate in and out of his breaks at a high level allows him to create instant separation most of the time. As mentioned above, when you combine this with his experience running an NFL-like route tree at Texas, it could make him a nice fit in Kevin Stefanski’s offense at multiple spots.

He’s the type of player who can get the ball on a screen or bunch/rub concept and take it 50 yards downfield at any moment.

The Browns are not exactly flush at wide receiver after Jerry Jeudy, with undrafted free agent Gage Larvadain making the most noise in training camp. So if Bond is in shape and can grasp the offense fairly quickly, he has a chance to make the initial 53-man roster and start to repay some of that faith the Browns showed in him while he dealt with his legal issues.

Browns QB competition turned into video content by team

gettyimages-2219831400.jpg

“Four quarterbacks, one starting job.”

With that, the Cleveland Browns new series “Man Under Center” ushered us into a behind-the-scenes look at the team’s quarterback competition between Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. Only Flacco, the team’s QB1 so far in training camp, has stayed healthy through the process so far, but he did not play in the first preseason game and is unlikely to do so against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2.

Sanders, fresh off exciting the world against the Panthers, will miss Saturday’s matchup against the Eagles as well. Trying to predict the Browns QB room is tough, but has been made tougher by Pickett and Gabriel having hamstring issues and, now, Sanders’ oblique issue.

Now we find out that the team’s media wing has turned the four-person competition into more content, narrated by Andrew Siciliano. Early in the first episode, we are promised access to what the coaches see and hear from the quarterbacks, including a desire for each quarterback to sound the same in the huddle.

The coaches also talked about wanting each QB to lead in their own way.

The video does a good job of providing thoughts about each quarterback individually, with HC Kevin Stefanski, OC Tommy Rees and QB coach Bill Musgrave giving insight as well as hearing from each quarterback.

It will be interesting to see the complete series overall and how much access the Browns will allow.

What do you think about the team doing this “Man Under Center” series? Anything stand out to you from the first episode?

Update on Texas WR Isaiah Bond, Browns

gettyimages-2192204718.jpg

Before training camp, the Cleveland Browns had 13 receivers signed to deals. Those numbers have dwindled a bit with several players released or became injured. But the current lineup is still plenty full of roster hopefuls.

Traditionally, the Browns keep six receivers on the final 53-man roster. Three are most likely a lock: Jerry Jeudy, Ced Tillman, and Jamari Thrash. Diontae Johnson and DeAndre Carter have been discussed as the most likely from this group to remain, but neither is a definite and it wouldn’t surprise anyone to see them released and then signed for the practice squad. That leaves just one spot up for grabs.

RELATED: BROWNS ROSTER BUBBLE – LARVADAIN VS. DAVIS

And that spot has plenty of talent and competition that is still going on. Today’s exhibition game against the Philadelphia Eagles will narrow the list. Kisean Johnson inked a three-year deal worth $2.965 million. Gage Larvadain and Kaden Davis have been fighting it out. David Bell always remains a possibility.

#Texas WR Isaiah Bond will fly to Cleveland on Saturday night, source tells clevelanddotcom, and will likely be signed by Sunday. No one is expecting #NFL discipline after his charges were dropped.

— Mary Kay Cabot (@MaryKayCabot) August 15, 2025

From the beginning of training camp, everyone viewed Diontae Johnson as the Wild Card in this group. And now, a new contender has emerged: Isaiah Bond, undrafted rookie free agent out of Texas. Bond is due in Cleveland today to sign a contract and join the team next week.

Is Bond the answer to this year’s receiver group? And why Cleveland?

Immediately afterwards, Bond posted on Instagram that his future plans now include the Browns. While the exact number of NFL clubs that actively pursued him isn’t specific, it is clear that he had choices and decided that Cleveland was the best opportunity for him going forward.

Is he a roster lock? Not so fast. For one, he will have exactly one week and the final preseason game on August 23 against the Los Angeles Rams to prove he belongs. The Tuesday after the Rams matchup, the Turk shows up. That means that Bond has one week to study the playbook, practice with quarterbacks he has never played with before, learn new routes and terminology, and find out what the next level is about.

All of the other receivers that remain have been with the Browns since May. They went to OTAs and mini-camp and have been practicing and working in the heat all this time.

Overall, Bond averaged a third-round evaluation, which is still pretty good. He runs a 4.39 in the 40. He was the second-fastest player at the combine in terms of top speed, reaching 24.17 miles per hour.

As far as college stats, Bond had 14 starts at Texas with 34 receptions for 540 yards, five touchdowns, a 15.9 yards per reception average, four rushes for 98 yards, and a single rushing score. Does any of this scream “Rookie of the Year”?

gettyimages-2201962425.jpg

He attended Alabama in his freshman and sophomore campaigns and had 27 starts with 65 receptions for 888 yards, five touchdowns, a 13.7 yards per reception average, one run for three yards. Nothing that says “future Pro Bowl” here either.

One thing Bond is – is a track star. At Buford High School in Buford, Georgia, he won the Georgia High School Association Class 5A and 6A state championships for three years straight from 2019 to 2021. His events were the 100 meters (10.48) and 200 meters (21.05).

In college, Bond was never named to any conference team, voted All-American, or received any accolades actually. He was just “that fast guy.” Well, so was Anthony Schwartz.

Bond will most likely get a similar deal as Kisean Johnson, with maybe some of it guaranteed and a smallish signing bonus. If he makes the roster, the Browns will then look for him to make his second contract much larger and rebound financially.

Bond has a small frame, being 5’-11” and weighing 180 pounds. He is only a decent downfield blocker, but has a deep threat ability of 84%. He possesses short-area quickness and has elite athletic traits with explosive acceleration. He does a good job of selling his routes and will work across the middle, so the slot or “Z” position would be a perfect spot for him.

The negatives are that his production has never caught up with his speed. He also gets knocked off his routes easily by bigger cornerbacks, and he goes down on the first hit. Basically, he relies too heavily on his elite speed and has a moderate catch radius.

But he does bring returner capabilities into the fold, an area that Cleveland has desperately attempted to solve over the years, and still does not have both a kickoff or punt returner that scares anyone.

Right now, Bond is the shiny new toy. In one week, we will see what he is made of and if he has a chance to make the final roster, or meet the Turk.

Browns vs. Eagles: What we learned from Dillon Gabriel’s first NFL action

imagn-26861559.jpg

The Cleveland Browns defeated the Philadelphia Eagles by a score of 22 to 13, and it was full of ups and downs on both sides of the ball, per usual for most preseason games. Though these games don’t mean much to the majority of the team, they mean quite a bit for guys like rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who saw his first NFL action today.

Gabriel started the day off looking absolutely flawless, dinking and dunking his way down the field with perfectly timed and placed balls. He showed great arm talent throughout his first NFL drive and had one of the best throws by any Cleveland quarterback this preseason so far on an out route to Jamari Thrash.

— Steve Palazzolo (@StevePalazzolo_) August 16, 2025

He also did a great job of moving around the pocket to find open throwing lanes for both himself and his receivers on a boringly good opening drive that ended with a nice Ahmani Marshall touchdown run.

Drive No.2 for Gabriel was looking similar to the first until he threw a pick-six on the first play of the second quarter. He was rolling out to the left when there was a miscommunication on the play between WR Diontae Johnson and TE Blake Whiteheart. Both players ended up in the same area and were confused where the ball was going, so Whiteheart tried to get out of the way of the pass at the last second.

One of Whiteheart or Johnson ran the wrong route on this one, but it was still Gabriel’s fault for trying to force the ball into that spot. He should’ve just thrown it away to avoid risk on that type of play. On the first play of the next drive, Gabriel and Pierre Strong fumbled a handoff that was recovered by the defense.

The ensuing drive looked “okay”, though Gabriel was a little rattled. They drove down the field effectively, but then Gabriel was sacked on a big third-down play at the Eagles’28-yard line. Dustin Hopkins then came on and made a 46-yard field goal on fourth down.

Despite experiencing a couple of frustrating drives in a row, Gabriel was seemingly able to get back into a rhythm at the end of the second quarter and zipped a really nice ball out to WR Kaden Davis for 29 yards. He then drove Cleveland down to Philadelphia’s 31-yard line, where he ran out of time. Andre Szmyt then proceeded to make a 49-yard field goal heading into halftime.

Dillon Gabriel’s day was over at that point, and Tyler Huntley came in to finish the game for the Browns in the second half.

What we ultimately learned from Gabriel’s performance is that he is indeed an NFL quarterback and operated the offense incredibly well except for one bad decision on the pick-six. Stefanski’s offense looked like a well-oiled machine with Gabriel at the helm, and though Shedeur Sanders had better overall stats last week, Gabriel operated within the confines of the offense much better than Shedeur did.

Sanders appears to be better at making things happen on broken plays, but Gabriel is better at doing what Kevin Stefanski wants to do schematically.

Browns QB competition will end this week with starter named

gettyimages-2219831400.jpg

What started as a true competition between four quarterbacks, despite there being a clear pecking order in the process, has dwindled down to a battle of attrition for the Cleveland Browns QB competition. Kenny Pickett seemed to have an early lead, but a hamstring injury has knocked him out for most of training camp, leading to Joe Flacco getting the first official lead of the competition.

Shedeur Sanders was excellent in his preseason debut, but then he hurt his oblique, forcing him to miss the second preseason contest. Dillon Gabriel missed the first game with his own hamstring issue, played well, but had some mistakes in his debut in the second game.

Despite the team’s media department just unveiling Part 1 of “Man Under Center,” a series looking at Cleveland’s quarterback competition, HC Kevin Stefanski plans to name a starting quarterback this week and treat the third preseason game as a dress rehearsal:

As the Browns approach the preseason Week 3 as a dress rehearsal for the season opener against the Bengals on Sept. 7, there will soon be a decision on who will be named the starting quarterback.

“We’re working towards Week 1,” Stefanski said. “That’s part of what this week is about, getting our football team ready. So, we’ll make all those types of determinations in the next couple of days.”

Given the health of Pickett and how they’ve treated Flacco, it is fair to say the 17-year vet will be named the starter this week. What happens with the other three beyond that will be the more interesting storyline to watch.

Are you surprised the Browns will name a starter this week before the third preseason game happens? Any chance it is someone besides Flacco in your mind?
