Kevin Stefanski names the 2025 Cleveland Browns team captains

gettyimages-2231704299.jpg

The Cleveland Browns have officially elected their team captains for the 2025 season, and Kevin Stefanski named them off in today’s media session.

On offense, Joe Flacco and Joel Bitonio have been tabbed as the leaders heading into the year, while Myles Garrett and Denzel Ward have been chosen on the defensive side of the ball. Corey Bojorquez was also elected to be the special teams captain.

Flacco and Bitonio are two of the most experienced and well-liked players on offense right now, and both of them are consistently willing to help out wherever they can. It’s not hard to see why they were voted to be the offensive captains this season.

Garrett and Ward are also some of the most experienced players on the defensive side of the football, and they’re two of the best players in the league at their respective positions. Both of these players are incredibly well-regarded by the community and by their teammates, and it’s no secret that they’re very influential to the defense as a whole.

Bojorquez is entering his 4th season with the Browns and has been the definition of consistency at the punter position for ST Coach Bubba Ventrone.

List of former Browns who didn’t make final rosters this past week

gettyimages-2211030196.jpg

NFL teams have been busy setting their 53-man rosters and practice squads this week, in anticipation for the regular season. The Cleveland Browns appear to be all set for Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Now, let’s go through and look at the list of former Browns players who didn’t survive this year’s camp across the NFL. Some of the names may make you think, “Oh, I didn’t realize they were still in the NFL.” When you think of the number of former Browns each camp, though, it’s also a sign of just how few names there are, meaning a lot of these players get one or two training camps, and then are never in the NFL again.

The players below with an asterisk did land on another team’s practice squad, at least.

QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson
RB Demtric Felton
RB D’Ernest Johnson*
RB Nyhemin Miller-Hines*

WR Donovan Peoples-Jones
WR James Proche*

OL Roy Mbaeteka*
OG Michael Dunn

TE Harrison Bryant*
TE Pharaoh Brown
TE Zaire Mitchell-Paden*
TE Giovanni Ricci

DT Jordan Phillips*
DE Isaiah Thomas*
DT Sheldon Day*
DT Ben Stille

LB Tony Fields
LB Anthony Walker

S Ronnie Harrison*
S Jordan Poyer*

CB A.J. Green*
CB Kahlef Hailassie*

Are there any former Browns players who you would like the team to give another chance to? Also, be sure to let us know if you spotted any other names that we missed from this past week.

Myles Garrett? If Cowboys, Jerry Jones wants to bring Browns star home

gettyimages-1231978016.jpg

If we are being honest, Cleveland Browns fans have a lot of reasons to be jealous of Dallas Cowboys fans. While the Cowboys haven’t won a Super Bowl since 1995, they have one a Super Bowl (whereas the Browns championships were before that particular game existed). Even the down years in Dallas are A) few and far between and B) have never been worse than a single four-win season since 1965.

The Cowboys are also an overall mess, with owner Jerry Jones also the general manager of the team. The Micah Parsons trade is just another example of having the wrong person in charge of making decisions. Dallas received less in return for the proven star pass rusher (who most believe is the second-best at his position) than Cleveland did for CB/WR Travis Hunter.

There are obvious differences between Parsons and Hunter, including age and especially contracts, but failing to get more value for a young star player is impressively bad by Jones. Had the Cowboys put Parsons on the block earlier this offseason, when teams had cap space and this year’s draft picks settled into positions, it is likely Dallas would have received a larger package.

According to sources, the Browns had an eye on Parsons next offseason if he was hit with the franchise tag, provided the team felt good about their quarterback position. Cleveland’s offer to Dallas, again assuming either Dillon Gabriel, Shedeur Sanders, or their top ‘26 first-round pick had secured their QB of the future, would have likely been better than what the Green Bay Packers gave up.

Giving up the lower of their two 2026 picks, a second-rounder in 2026, their first in 2027 and a little bit more would have likely gotten the deal done.

The Browns went through an issue with their star pass rusher, and who many consider the best at the position, this offseason as well. Unlike the Cowboys, Cleveland denied Myles Garrett’s trade request and paid him. At the time, Garrett’s $40 million annual salary reset the non-QB market. Since WR Ja’Marr Chase, DE TJ Watt and, now, Parsons have all topped that number.

Speaking to the media Thursday night, owner/GM Jones said something that caught the attention of many and is likely to lead to a ton of Dallas rumors:

#Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, ever the salesman, notes the team now has four first-round picks over the next two years and: "Nothing says we can’t use some of those picks right now to go get somebody right now.”

— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) August 28, 2025

With the Cowboys dealing away a prime pass rusher, Garrett being from Texas and growing up a fan of the team and the Browns pass rusher getting paid an average of $7 million less a year, we can expect Cowboys trade rumors to include Garrett. That speculation was heard on multiple radio shows on Friday morning and around social media:

#Cowboys got a lot of picks and could use some immediate help on defense. And Jerry Jones could diss Micah Parsons by making Myles Garrett the top paid defensive player once again. https://t.co/DP5jrgV1gQ

— Chris Malumphy (@DraftHistory) August 29, 2025

If we fast-forward to the 2025 NFL trade deadline, would a Garrett to Dallas trade make sense?

Myles Garrett trade to Cowboys: For the Browns

When the November 4th NFL trade deadline rolls around, Cleveland will be in their bye week and will have faced:

  • Bengals
  • Ravens
  • Packers (with Parsons)
  • Lions
  • Vikings (in London)
  • Steelers (fresh off London trip with no bye week)
  • Dolphins
  • Patriots

While optimists might see three or four victories in that group, one or two is probably more likely.

At that point, Gabriel and/or Sanders will likely have started games, giving the franchise an idea of what their future will be with those two quarterbacks. If either gives the team confidence that they are the QB of the future, trading Garrett would make little sense.

The same would be true if the Browns start out that stretch with four or five victories.

Realistically, Cleveland starts out with a win or two and doesn’t feel confident in Gabriel or Sanders as their for sure starter for the future. At that point, trading the soon-to-be 30-year-old Garrett could make some sense. Unlike this offseason, the team would be in control of the narrative, have given the veterans on the roster a chance to make the 2025 season competitive and, potentially, have a lot of leverage in trade discussions.

Getting multiple first-round picks (or similar value) and not having to take back any significant contracts (Dallas acquired Kenny Clark, who makes over $20 million the next two seasons, in the Parsons deal) could set the Browns up nicely in terms of draft capital.

A Garrett deal could also allow the team to go into full rebuild mode with veterans like Joel Bitonio (likely to retire soon, send him out on a good note), TE David Njoku (on the last year of his contract), OL Wyatt Teller (you don’t build around high priced guards, Zak Zinter is waiting in wings), OL Jack Conklin (an injury waiting to happen) and CB Denzel Ward (a top player at a highly valuable position) all likely to bring back value in deals.

Not trading Garrett this offseason made sense to give the roster a chance to compete this year. If the Browns are struggling by the trade deadline, a full reset (after a soft reset this offseason) could be the right move.

Myles Garrett trade to Cowboys: For Dallas

Unlike Cleveland, Jones could be interested in making this move no matter what the Cowboys record is at the trade deadline. Bringing Garrett home, adding the best, albeit older than Parsons, pass rusher in the NFL and not being on the hook for the highest paid defender in the league all seem to fit Jones’ MO at a GM and owner.

Jones is also 82 years old, has a very good quarterback in place (Dak Prescott), two very good receiver (Ceedee Lamb, George Pickens) and a penchant for big moves. Jones traded first-round picks in the past for WRs Roy Williams and Amari Cooper when few thought either was worth that much.

Putting Garrett in Parsons’ role while adding Clark to the middle of the defense could shore up Dallas’ defense against the run and pass while also putting Jones’ team back in the spotlight.

Expect the unexpected with Jones, but dealing for Garrett fits the bill for “America’s Team.”

Myles Garrett trade to Cowboys: What does the contract say?

Interestingly, one of the reasons the Browns didn’t trade Garrett this offseason was his contract. Before his extension, it was almost impossible to trade Garrett without cutting (not trading) Bitonio, Ward and Teller.

Now, with the extension, Garett is able to be traded this season with a very reasonable cost this year, but a significant one the following. The huge cap hit in 2026 wouldn’t be problematic if Cleveland decided to tear down and rebuild the roster by moving on from other veterans (through trade, release, contract expiration or retirement).

According to Over the Cap, trading Garrett after June 1st will cost the Browns just under $20 million in dead cap space while saving the team just over $2 million on the cap this year. No problem at all under the salary cap getting a deal done.

Where there is a potentially significant problem in trading Garrett comes in the form of a no-trade clause that was added in his extension this offseason. The star defender would have a choice whether he wanted to be traded and to where that would be. If Cleveland has one or two wins and no future quarterback on their roster, perhaps a deal home to Dallas is something he would approve but, as the post above suggests, would Garrett then ask for another reworked deal?

Myles Garrett trade to Cowboys: Possible, not likely

For the Browns to decide to trade Garrett, GM Andrew Berry and HC Kevin Stefanski would be admitting that a full teardown was coming. While the pair got an extension that kicks in this year, neither can feel confident that they would get a chance to rebuild a roster over the next three to four seasons.

Much like Dallas has, Cleveland would also get roasted for dealing away a generational player, even if he is a few years older than Parsons. Those types of players just do not come along very often, which changes the “value” conversation in a trade:

Scarcity > Value

You can't put a price tag on the opportunity to roster a top-10 most valuable player in the sport, because it's not commonly an option

It's not an "overpay" when you are acquiring something that cannot otherwise be paid for. There is no comparable alternative

— Jakob Sanderson (@JakobSanderson) August 28, 2025

The Browns would also have to get Garrett’s approval, get the Cowboys to pay a huge ransom and hope not to alienate the rest of the fan base (those who haven’t already left due to Deshaun Watson’s arrival, the departure of Baker Mayfield and Nick Chubb and the consistent losing and drama).

For Dallas, trading for a player over the age of 30 only makes sense if A) the deal is cheap and B) the Cowboys are true contenders. The problem is C) Jerry Jones is not always logical. Giving up similar assets that they received for Parsons to acquire a player nearly four years older is what some would call “hustling backwards.”

For Garrett, returning home, being celebrated as a player who wants to be there and going to a team that has a quarterback would all be reasons to accept the deal. If Jones is willing to give him another bump in pay would just be icing on the $40 million cake he’s getting yearly. Given the lore of the Cowboys, Garrett’s public stock would also rise substantially with a deal.

As the season gets rolling, if the Browns are losing most of their games and Jones hasn’t made a big trade yet, expect the Garrett to the Cowboys trade rumors to heat up, no matter how unlikely a deal might be.

Browns fans express surprising outlook for 2025 season

gettyimages-2231659570.jpg

During the season, Cleveland Browns fans vote in SB Nation Reacts to express their confidence level in the team or their thoughts on other topics.

Cleveland_1_082625.png
Cleveland_2_082625.png

Our first question asked if the Browns’ offseason and preseason performance affected fan confidence. Despite the four-way quarterback battle, the team letting Nick Chubb go and having their top drafted running back still be unsigned, and not really upgrading the wide receiver room, 50% of fans are more confident in what the team can bring to the table in 2025. I think there is definitely a case for that, but I ended up voting with the 37% crowd that said my confidence was unchanged. That’s because I already kind of dismissed last year as a bad season that we can look past, and with some of the very early known changes (Deshaun Watson being out and a return to Kevin Stefanski’s offense), my expectation was immediately that Cleveland would be better this season; the preseason itself didn’t alter that, per se, but confirmed it for me.

Our other question asked, if QB Joe Flacco goes down with an injury in Week 1, who would you want to see come in for relief to help spark the team to (hopefully) a victory? Would it be Dillon Gabriel or Shedeur Sanders? I think it would have been a toss-up if that third preseason game didn’t happen, which goes to show you how perception can change in an instant: a landslide 86% of fans are going with Gabriel now.

National_3_082625.png

On a national scale, poll questions were asked about the league MVP, offensive MVP, defensive MVP, and rookies of the year. The only category that had Cleveland represented was the defensive MVP, where Myles Garrett was neck-in-neck with Aiden Hutchinson for the projected honor. Although maybe that poll would have changed if the Micah Parsons trade had happened before it.

Over at FanDuel Sportsbook, you can currently bet on whether the Browns will have over/under 2.5 wins, 3.5 wins, or 4.5 wins.

Browns: What is the plan with Deshaun Watson?

gettyimages-2230884866.jpg

The Cleveland Browns have a clear setup for the quarterback position when the season opens on September 7 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Then, like something from a Victorian-era horror novel, is the specter of Deshaun Watson, who will open the season on the physically unable to perform list after tearing his Achilles tendon twice in the span of a few months.

Funny thing about life is. If you work hard enough it will all workout. pic.twitter.com/REJnX94ZvC

— Quincy Avery (@QuincyAvery) August 27, 2025

Throughout the summer, short videos of Watson engaging in various football-related activities have surfaced on social media. These would then lead to a litany of posts proclaiming how great he looks, how the Browns have not “ruled out” the idea of him playing this fall, and that a “hard decision” is looming on the horizon for a player that still has two years left on his fully guaranteed contract.

#Browns QB Deshaun Watson just posted these on his IG story a few minutes ago.

It appears he’s ramping things up significantly in his rehab process. pic.twitter.com/mm9BSGEYgp

— Grant Puskar (@grant_puskar_) August 20, 2025

The reality is much different, however, as there is no way the Browns can put Watson back on the field ever again.

Everything that can go wrong has gone wrong for Watson and the Browns ever since he arrived in Cleveland. An 11-game suspension by the NFL in 2022. A season-ending shoulder injury in 2023. A season-ending Achilles’ injury in 2024. And some of the worst quarterback play in NFL history.

While general manager Andrew Berry and head coach Kevin Stefanski will never come out and rip a player in public – what value is there in doing that, after all? – they watch the same games, and they know that putting Watson into a game is a disaster waiting to happen.

"I think (Deshaun) Watson's going to be cleared in October or November. You're probably going to come to a point where you've got to put him on your 53-man roster."

— 92.3 The Fan (@923TheFan) August 26, 2025

So what is the plan for Watson?

Here is how the upcoming season can (should?) play out for the Browns and Watson:

  • He is going to miss a minimum of the first four weeks while on the PUP list, according to league rules.
  • The Browns then have five weeks to decide if he is healthy enough to start practicing again. Take the full five weeks and then bring him back to practice as the fourth quarterback.
  • After three weeks of practice, the Browns have to decide if they want to activate Watson to the 53-man roster or put him on season-ending injured reserve.
  • The team is now 12 weeks into the season, it is the beginning of December, and there are just five games remaining.
  • If Watson is truly healthy, or if the Browns just don’t want to get into a fight with the players’ union, activate Watson to the 53-man roster. Someone will need to be dropped from the end of the roster, but that is life in the NFL.
  • From that point on, simply make him a gameday inactive for the rest of the season. Healthy players are on the inactive list every week, which, again, is life in the NFL.
  • Who is going to complain about this? Certainly not the fans.
  • If Watson or his agent complains, who is going to be sympathetic to their cause?

It makes for good copy to overcomplicate this situation or create some wild scenario where Watson sees the field again in a Browns uniform. But the reality is so much simpler, and everyone comes out of it fine. The Browns don’t have to deal with a headache or poor quarterback play; Watson keeps cashing paychecks and moves another season away from his latest disastrous season.

As the NFL shows every year, sometimes the best thing for a quarterback is not to play for a season to allow everyone to forget that they were not very good the last time everyone saw them. It’s great that Watson wants to continue to play, rather than grow fat while collecting his salary, but the last thing he or the Browns need is for him to be on the field this fall.

Get through this season, then worry about what to do with Watson next summer.

It really can be that simple, even if we are talking about the Browns, where things rarely go smoothly.

Browns ‘X-Factor’ has a chance to change team, cash in via NFL free agency

gettyimages-2223709750.jpg

With the Cleveland Browns setting their initial 53-man roster, with a few changes that followed, the team is much younger this season, but still has loads of questions. The defense was expected to carry the team’s success but injuries to LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah and CB Martin Emerson, along with the sudden retirement of LB Jordan Hicks, have changed things.

A new addition to NFL free agency could help the Browns defense, but the only certainty overall with Cleveland’s roster is the uncertainty.

If the Browns defense is going to return to the dominance of 2023, the line will lead the way. DE Myles Garrett is still the best at the position and is joined by rookie DT Mason Graham and second-year DT Mike Hall Jr., the team’s top picks in the last two NFL drafts.

Opposite of Garrett at defensive end is a lot of potential, but questions about who will start and play the most snaps. Isaiah McGuire was very good last season after Za’Darius Smith was traded away. Cam Thomas had a great training camp and Joe Tryon-Shoyinka was added via free agency this offseason.

Alex Wright was thrown into the fire as a young player, but had shown a lot of development before a torn triceps injury ended his 2024 season in early October. Wright is one of only a handful of players who are of a similar size to Garrett, as seen below:

imagn-18406375.jpg

Wright earned ESPN’s “X-Factor” designation going into the 2025 season:

While Myles Garrett is a one-man wrecking crew, the rest of the defensive line must be functional enough to punish teams that overwhelmingly dedicate resources to stopping Garrett — the Browns struggled with that in 2024.

It looked as if the lightbulb was coming on for him in the back half of the 2023 season, and he was expected to take a larger chunk of the snaps and rush opportunities in 2024 before a torn triceps ended his season in Week 4.

Heading into his fourth season after being selected in the third round of the 2022 NFL draft, Wright is set for free agency at the end of the year. His best statistical season came in 2023 with five sacks, six tackles for loss, five QB hits, two passes defended, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.

A big season from Wright, and health along the defensive line, could allow Cleveland to ride their defense to a lot of victories and would lead to a big contract for Wright this offseason. Sounds like the perfect example of an “X-Factor” player.

What are your expectations for Wright this year? Anyone else on the roster fit the “X-Factor” label?

Browns vs Bengals: Everything for Week 1 of the 2025 season

imagn-21401739.jpg

The Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals will match up in Week 1 of the 2025 NFL season in a clash of the AFC North and in the first Battle of Ohio of the season. Neither team made the playoffs last year, but the Bengals made a big push late in the season while the Browns fell apart during the same period.

Cleveland’s in the midst of a bit of a soft reset to their roster, while Cincinnati has paid to bring back the same roster that had a very good offense and terrible defense last year. Joe Burrow vs Joe Flacco isn’t the quarterback matchup it might have been a few years ago, but the Browns hope the veteran will be a stabilizing force, while the Bengals will ride Burrow’s acumen back to the playoffs.

Early betting lines leaned strongly toward the visitors from the southern part of the state. With a week left until Week 1’s matchup, that line has stayed strong in favor of Cincinnati but has seen a drop in the over/under line.

After a mandatory break, Cleveland will return to practice on Labor Day, Monday, at 10:45 AM with HC Kevin Stefanski and players speaking after practice ends. The Browns versus Bengals kicks off at 1 PM this Sunday on Fox.

Cleveland opens as underdogs in Week 1 Battle of Ohio, but remember how that turned out two years ago?

gettyimages-2191098992.jpg

The Cleveland Browns opened as 5.5-point road underdogs against the Cincinnati Bengals ahead of their Week 1 match-up, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. The over/under on the game is currently 47.5.

gettyimages-2191317023.jpg

The Browns are coming off of a disappointing 3-14 season that was filled with more erratic quarterback play, a horribly implemented new offensive system, and a defense that seemed to try overcompensating for the offensive flaws and therefore struggled.

This year, Cleveland is looking to flip the script by returning to Kevin Stefanski’s successful offensive style from 2023, bringing veteran Joe Flacco back to lead the team, and drafting two top defensive prospects.

The Bengals were 4-8 last season, but won their final 5 games to finish at 9-8 (just missing the playoffs). Cincinnati has struggled at the beginning of the season for several straight years, including back in the season opener of the 2023 season. The Browns played the Bengals to kick off that season, and Cleveland’s defense dominated with a 24-3 victory. Could we see history repeat itself? If it does, then the Browns are getting a nice spread to go with this opener.

The over/under for the game is 47.5.

What odds would you take if you were placing a bet?

Browns have one important injury heading into Week 1 versus Bengals

imagn-26977033.jpg

With the way the Cleveland Browns handle training camp and preseason, it is sometimes hard to know whether a player is injured, a veteran or the team is just being cautious. Many players saw the field in the third preseason contest, but not everyone, which begged the question about who was injured and who was not.

Of the list of players who did not hit the field against the Los Angeles Rams, we knew for sure the following were dealing with injuries:

  • CB Denzel Ward
  • CB Greg Newsome II
  • QB Deshaun Watson
  • WR David Bell
  • WR Cedric Tillman
  • QB Kenny Pickett
  • LB Winston Reid
  • OL Cornelious Lucas
  • LB Mohamoud Diabate
  • DT Mike Hall Jr.

Pickett was traded away, Bell was placed on the NFI list, Watson on the PUP list and Reid on IR. Hall passed his physical to make the initial 53-man roster.

The Browns have put out their unofficial depth chart for Week 1 versus the Cincinnati Bengals and have just one player listed as injured, Hall, which does not bode well for his chances to play this week. No one else on the depth chart has the injury designation but Ward, Newsome and Diabate could still see limitations during the week.

Browns injury report: Vet rests, 1 DNP, multiple limited; Bengals completely healthy

imagn-24994710.jpg

The Cleveland Browns started their Week 1 practice with one player not participating, a few limited and a vet getting a rest day coming off a day off on Tuesday. The Cincinnati Bengals, on the other hand, started their week of practice completely healthy with no one on their injury report.

Every week of every year, it seems like the Browns are dealing with more injuries than their opponents in the first report before mostly being able to play by game time. Whether that is due to stricter reporting from Cleveland than others, players reporting more injuries, some kind of mind games or a generally less healthy team is up for speculation.

At Wednesday’s practice, not a single Bengals player was limited:

Bengals Injury Report

  • None

Browns Injury Report

  • DT Mike Hall Jr. – Knee – DNP
  • OL Joel Bitonio – Rest – Limited
  • LB Mohamoud Diabate – Quad – Limited

  • OL Ethan Pocic – Knee – Limited
  • CB Denzel Ward – Shoulder – Limited
  • TE Blake Whiteheart – Knee – Limited
  • WR Cedric Tillman – Thumb – Full
  • OL Cornelius Lucas – Ankle – Full

Hall was able to pass his physical in advance of cutdown day, but has not practiced since. Given the lack of practice during training camp, it is unlikely Hall is ready to play this week, even if he joins practice, and Week 2 is also up in the air.

We will keep you up to date on injuries as the week goes on including Friday’s final injury report with gameday designations.

Bengals WR Ja’Marr Chase is afraid of Browns fans

imagn-22287068.jpg

The history between the Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals goes way back and the fight for the hearts of the people of Ohio may never end. Recently, the Bengals and Browns fueded on social media over uniforms and team colors, while the on-field matchup between Cincinnati receivers and Cleveland cornerbacks has been highlight-worthy.

The Bengals and the Browns matchup in Week 1 of the 2025 NFL season, with both hoping to bounce back from missing the playoffs last year. The two have had some great games over the years, with the first Battle of Ohio this year between the All-Offense Cincinnati squad and the All-Defense Cleveland crew.

Speaking about the trip to northern Ohio Sunday, Bengals WR Ja’Marr Chase noted his desire to jump into the Dawg Pound but his fear of Browns fans:

Ja’Marr said he’s always wanted to jump in the Dawg Pound but he won’t.
“I heard they stab people in there.”

— Jay Morrison (@ByJayMorrison) September 4, 2025

Cleveland fans have been known to do a lot of things to opposing players, fans and referees, but we do not have a recent example of anything as serious as Chase is implying. Nonetheless, Browns fans have obviously made themselves known to Cincinnati’s top receiver.

Browns roster: X-factor on offense, defense, special teams for 2025

gettyimages-1706540614.jpg

The Cleveland Browns have expectations of not being one of the league’s worst clubs for a second consecutive year. GM Andrew Berry worked overtime this offseason to address the weak spots and bring in new players to replace the ones who have left the team.

Now that training camp is over, and the air has cleared on the final 53-man roster and who is in and who is out, the focus for every player, coach, and executive is on the season opener, September 7, against division foe Cincinnati Bengals in Cleveland.

There are many good-to-great players on this year’s roster, and still some problem areas. But this is one player on offense and defense, plus special teams who can change the narrative and perhaps be the difference in games.

Here’s the list:

Offense

TE Harold Fannin, Jr.

gettyimages-2231704372.jpg

While most would point to the quarterback position as being the key component to success this year, the fact is, QB Joe Flacco is rarely injured, and is a seasoned veteran who has played 17 seasons. Yes, he is 40 years old, but in all likelihood, he will be fine.

The running game should be the main focus anyway. The offensive line is designed for the run game, and guys love to run block. This does cut down on the number of passes thrown.

But the passing game still needs to be successful and prevalent when called upon. The ideal situation would be for the rushing attack to consume 65%-70% of plays. Whether that becomes true for each game will be determined as the season rolls along.

The passing game needs to be the complement and not the focus. In order to do this, the offense will require qualified pass catchers.

WR Jerry Jeudy made the Pro Bowl last year as he had his first breakout year in the league. TE David Njoku, if he remains healthy, is a huge playmaker, but his health is always an issue every season. And on the surface, the offensive X-factor just might be Cedric Tillman starting on the outside opposite Jeudy, or the youngster Jamari Thrash starting in the slot.

The offense will get back to featuring two tight end sets. That requires two exceptional bodies to man the positions.

The player who will be this year’s offensive X-factor is rookie tight end Harold Fannin, Jr.

To begin with, Fannin comes to the Browns as a huge position of need. With a two-tight-end offense, a team needs a pair that can block efficiently and become more than adequate pass catchers. Jordan Akins had minimal production, so he was not re-signed. Blake Whiteheart is the best blocking tight end on the roster, but his passing targets are minimal, it seems, which justifies his TE3 designation. This offense requires two good pass catchers when they aren’t blocking for the run game. Njoku and Fannin fit the bill.

Bowling Green's Harold Fannin Jr is the best tight end this season. He's been targeted 72 times, reeling in 60 catches for a nation-high 830 yards and five touchdowns. One of the top playmakers at the position and my TE2 right now. #NFLDraft pic.twitter.com/bv6RalJs2L

— Full-Time Dame 💰 (@DP_NFL) October 22, 2024

Berry did not draft another receiver in this year’s draft, but he certainly went out of his way to snatch Fannin. Six receivers were taken after Fannin and in the same round that Fannin was selected. That is how Berry viewed Fannin’s worth to a struggling offense.

Fannin led the nation in pass receptions last year. He also led the nation in total receiving yards. By a tight end – not a receiver.

This season, he will become the hidden gem that will change everything this offense will try to accomplish. He didn’t just dominate the nation’s tight end group; he dominated the entire receiving category.

The bonus with Fannin is that he is an outstanding pass catcher with size, but he is also an excellent blocker. A lot of tight ends who only catch the ball won’t or can’t block, but Fannin is able and willing to do the dirty work.

Defense

Cam Mitchell

gettyimages-1697149947.jpg

There are plenty of candidates for the defensive X-factor.

Both Alex Wright and Isaiah McGuire fit this description probably more than any other players. With the defensive tackle position being a group with a bunch of new names, that unit should be considered solved as far as being able to stop the run. But the position opposite Myles Garrett is one that is in a state of flux between the two players. And this may continue all season.

Linebacker is also a huge concern. Three new bodies will start for the Browns this year. Has this ever happened in the history of the NFL?

The area that needs the most attention, however, is cornerback. The reason is that going into training camp, this group was viewed as a strength. Now, it is a question mark. The reason is because of one player: M.J. Emerson.

The Browns had the luxury of having three really good cornerbacks, something that is a rare occurrence in the league. Denzel Ward manned the left side with his Pro Bowl hardware, Emerson was on the right side, while former first-round draft pick Greg Newsome was taking care of the slot.

With Emerson’s injury, which placed him on season-ending IR, suddenly, there was panic in the cornerback room. Who would take his spot? The result became Newsome taking over Emerson’s spot, a position he originally manned, so he is familiar with the workload, and then Cam Mitchell taking over the slot.

The fact that Mitchell has now been thrust into the starting role is both exciting and concerning.

Is Mitchell ready for a starting role? And if so, is the slot where he should be placed? Moving Newsome outside means that the defensive backfield will have two new bodies instead of just one if Newsome had remained in the slot.

Mitchell was a fifth-round draft pick out of Northwestern back in 2023. His development has been on the fast track, and he has been given lots of snaps since his arrival in Cleveland. He played in the first nine games of his rookie season and the final five games. Although he had plenty of special teams snaps (185), he was also used quite a bit on defense with 281 defensive snaps.

Last year, Mitchell played in every game. He had one start. His special teams snaps decreased (138) while his defensive snaps increased (372). This means DC Jim Schwartz used him more and more on defense, especially in the final four games.

The job of the slot corner is not the guy who is going to rush the passer or come on a blitz. Schwartz requires his cornerbacks to cover man, and Mitchell will be required to take on the opponent’s slot receiver, which is usually a smaller athlete. Since Mitchell is 5’-11” and only 191 pounds, this will work well.

When Emerson became injured, the immediate reaction was for Berry to sign a seasoned veteran to come in and become the starter, either on the outside or in the slot. Instead, they have given the job to Mitchell.

The fact that Mitchell has played in 30 NFL games is a huge plus. The fact that he has just one start is troubling. Straight up: the success of the defensive backfield will lie solely in the hands and feet of Mitchell. He could be the answer for this defense in Emerson’s place, or he could be the target of every defensive coordinator.

Special teams

K Andre Szmyt

gettyimages-2230487118.jpg

No doubt about it, the one player everyone is looking at on this year’s roster (not named Shedeur Sanders) is the new guy at kicker.

For one, releasing a veteran kicker is always a gamble when the choice is a young guy. Correction: unproven young guy. Veteran for veteran makes more sense. Dustin Hopkins played 10 seasons. Szmyt’s first NFL game will be this year’s season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals.

It is quite possible that the coaching staff decided to retain Szmyt instead of continuing with Hopkins, especially since his horrible season last year, plus the fact that he missed two PATs in the preseason. This means Symyt won the job by default.

He had a really good training camp and did not miss any kicks whatsoever in all three preseason games.

No doubt about it, Szmyt had a distinguished college career. He was nominated for the Burlsworth Trophy (top walk-on player) all four years and won the Groza Award as the nation’s top kicker in 2018. He was the only kicker in college football history who was a finalist for this award three consecutive years. He also won the Vlade Award, given yearly to the most accurate college football kicker.

He played at Syracuse as a fifth-year student because of the pandemic, so he knows how to kick in outdoor cold weather conditions. Szmyt became the school’s most accurate kicker in program history. He was named a unanimous All-American, First Team All-ACC, Third Team All-ACC, Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, and East-West Shrine Bowl invitee.

gettyimages-2144910057.jpg

For his college career, he converted 85 of 105 field goal attempts (81.0%), 199 of 203 PATs (98.0%), and scored 454 points.

RELATED: 2024 UFL KICKING STATS

After being undrafted in the 2023 NFL draft, he was in the Chicago Bears camp before signing with the St. Louis Battlehawks of the UFL. In that league, he was the field goal leader (2024), going 19-21 in 10 games with a long of 61 yards.

The success of the UFL is one of the indicators that the coaching staff is using to gauge his abilities at the professional level. We will see.

Browns Quinshon Judkins signs: Team announces, roster exemption provides options

gettyimages-2223947900.jpg

The Cleveland Browns will not have RB Quinshon Judkins on the field Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals, but the team will have their second-round pick under contract. Judkins participated in all offseason activities prior to an arrest in Florida on a domestic violence-related charge. No formal charges were filed against Judkins, which cleared the way for him to return to the team, but the two sides had to work out a contract.

There was wild speculation that Judkins could return to college, that he wouldn’t be reporting to the Browns any time soon and, earlier this week, that he could sign imminently.

Imminently was not soon enough to get the running back on the field versus the Bengals, but multiple reports have Cleveland agreeing to a deal with Judkins:

The #Browns are signing second-round RB Quinshon Judkins to his fully guaranteed deal, sources say. All draft picks are now under contract.

Judkins legal situation is behind him after no charges were filed, though the NFL is still conducting its investigation. pic.twitter.com/eqE7h0TuGf

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) September 6, 2025

As noted, the NFL is still investigating, which could lead to league discipline. Sources have communicated to DBN that the team does not expect much, if any, significant punishment for their second-round pick.

A ramp-up week could allow Judkins to be available for Week 2 versus the Baltimore Ravens, but the team has also received an excemption from the league that will give them some flexibility:

The #Browns are expected to get a temporary roster exemption for RB Quinshon Judkins, who is signing his fully guaranteed rookie contract today.

That’s unrelated to the league’s ongoing disciplinary process; it’s standard for players who missed camp and can last up to two games. pic.twitter.com/d524u0SQxq

— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) September 6, 2025

The team has made the signing of Judkins official on Saturday afternoon while noting the two-game roster exemption:

The Cleveland Browns have signed RB Quinshon Judkins. The Browns will be granted a two-game roster exemption for Judkins from the 53-player Active/Inactive List.

The Browns play two AFC North games, the Cincinnati Bengals and Baltimore Ravens, during the exemption, but Judkins could be activated to the roster for Week 2 if the team feels he is prepared. If not, Cleveland’s second-round pick would make his debut in Week 3 at home against the Green Bay Packers.

Cincinnati Bengals vs. Cleveland Browns – 3rd Quarter Game Thread

imagn-27026785.jpg

The Browns’ lengthy opening drive finished in the second quarter to tie the game at 7-7. After both teams then traded punts, the Bengals went back on top with a touchdown drive and 14-7 lead. Flacco then led the Browns into Cincinnati territory heading into the two-minute warning. Cleveland went pretty conservative after that and settled for a field goal, making it 14-10 at the half.

Browns, Bengals Winners, Losers: Cleveland beat themselves with missed kicks, turnovers

gettyimages-2234185576.jpg

Bengals-DONE.png

The Cleveland Browns begin the 2025 season with high hopes that last year’s disaster will not repeat itself. There are quite a few new bodies on this year’s roster to help with this cause.

Playing a division opponent such as the Cincinnati Bengals right out of the gate is a challenge. The Bengals are expected to compete for the AFC North title this year, and should be a pretty good ballclub.

In the end, the Bengals won by a sliver as they defeated the Browns 17-16.

So who played well for the Browns? Who didn’t?

BROWNIES

DE Myles Garrett – The Browns pay him a lot of money so that he can do what Myles Garrett does: Get to the quarterback. Had just five total tackles, but four of those were for losses. In the second quarter, he beat LT Orlando Brown with a dramatic lean on the offensive tackle and ended up on top of QB Joe Burrow for just a two-yard gain on a third-and-eight. Close to halftime, he beat Brown again and almost had a sack that forced a hurried throw. In the fourth quarter, Garrett was hit by Brown and then LG Dylan Fairchild and still was able to get to Burrow for his first sack. After a Cincy timeout, it was Garrett on back-to-back plays for yet another sack that forced a punt. Garrett also had three QB hits.

gettyimages-2234177180.jpg

QB Joe Flacco – Yes, there were two interceptions that destroyed drives in Cincinnati’s portion of the field. Yes, both were in the hands of the receiver who tipped the ball up for the pick. So, there’s that. At all times with Flacco under center, the Browns had a chance to drive the field. The Browns punted just twice all game. Some good plays include the third-and-eight conversion in Quarter 3 with 11:36 left as Flacco hit WR Ced Tillman for 13 yards after big gains by passes to TE David Njoku (11 yards) and TE Harold Fannin (18 yards). On the first and goal call, Flacco then hit Tillman in a crowded end zone, who had barely beaten CB Cam Taylor-Britt for the touchdown. The second-to-last drive of the game was all-Flacco, which began at the Bengals 42-yard line. First, a 13-yard zinger and a nine-yard strike to WR Jerry Jeudy on a third-and-six conversion for another first down that placed Cleveland in field goal range. All game, Flacco knew when to toss the ball out of bounds to live another play. Tossed 45 passes in this game, with 31 completions for 290 yards, one TD, two picks, with a 75.2 QB rating.

LB Carson Schwesinger – This dude was everywhere. One thing to notice is how he old-school tackles by hitting his man in the chest and drives through them. In the first quarter, on a short pass to RB Chase Brown in the flats, Schwesinger was on the other side of the field and caught Brown from behind as he attempted to cut. As the Bengals attempted to run out the clock on their final drive, Schwesinger caught Brown on a sweep for a five-yard loss on a second-and-seven that then became a punt instead of clock being eliminated. Led the Browns in tackles with eight with one tackle for loss and one QB hit. Very nice NFL debut.

Second half third down defensive stops – The Bengals had their way in the first half, going 5-6 on third down attempts, but that changed dramatically in the second half. Cincinnati could only manage two third-down conversions, including missing on a third-and-one and a third-and-three. Part of the reason was that Cincy had large numbers, including two nine-yard attempts and one for 22 yards.

gettyimages-2234172900.jpg

WR Cedric Tillman – Did not lead the Browns in receiving yards, but caught balls at the most opportune times with his large frame. In the third stanza, he snagged a pass over the middle from Flacco all the way down to the Bengals’ 30-yard line on third down. He converted a third-and-eight later in the same period and a third-and-nine in the third quarter, which gained 13 yards. Eight targets, five catches for 52 yards, one TD with a 10.4 yards per reception average.

Offense first downs – Holy cow! 22 first downs is a scene from the 1980s as Cleveland was able to move the ball down the field for most of the game. Flacco used his receivers and tight ends to his advantage to convert. Sad that the total first downs are greater than the total number of points scored.

gettyimages-2229784891.jpg

OT Cornelius Lucas – Hear Bengals DE Joseph Ossai’s name much during this game? The answer is no because Browns RT Jack Conklin was injured early and Lucas was inserted. Ossai was manhandled all game instead. One tackle, that was it. Zero sacks, zero QB hits, one pressure. Pretty good day for Lucas who was sitting on the bench sunning himself one minute, and the next entered the game. Nice work.

FROWNIES

K Andre Szmyt – Everything began just as planned. His first NFL points came with a PAT after a 16-play drive that ended with a Rocket Sanders touchdown. On the Browns’ third drive, this one 11 plays, Szmyt connected on a 45-yard field goal. But the wheels came off. Why? Who knows? The Browns scored another touchdown for their first lead of the game, only to have the young kicker miss the PAT wide right. Okay……

The Browns never had a real Plan B at kicker after last season and got left with this one. Let's see if they can get him one more shot at redemption.

— Dan Labbe (@dan_labbe) September 7, 2025

Then, with 6:56 in the game, Cleveland began at Cincinnati’s 42-yard line. A lot of gutsy plays were handled by the offensive line and key receptions by receivers as Flacco’s game management was sterling. A sack ended the drive to set up Szymt’s 36-yard field goal attempt to put them in front with 2:25 remaining. Wide right? Again? Have heard this one before: “Andre, coach wants to see you. Bring your playbook.”

RB Jerome Ford – No part of today’s game saw Ford do anything. He did not run with authority and was caught for minimal to no gain too many times. He was stuffed on a key third-and-three by DT B.J. Hill in the first quarter for no gain. With 11:10 left in Quarter 3, he ran right into LB Barrett Carter. This is our bellcow back?

How about you draft top end receivers in next years draft. So sick and tired of losing games due to skill positions dropping catches. Insane we lost that game.

— lavagirlgang (@lavagirlgang) September 7, 2025

Key drops – Rookie TE Harold Fannin dropped a key third-and-five that would have been a first down in the fourth quarter, which ended a good drive. On the very next play, going for it on fourth down, WR Jerry Jeudy did exactly the same thing. Both passes by Flacco were right in the player’s hands. In the second quarter, with 8:42 left before the half, TE David Njoku dropped a sure first-down conversion.

Browns running game – Wasn’t this year’s team supposed to get back to its roots and run the hell out of the ball? What happened? 49 rushing yards by five runners. For the game. The entire game. Meanwhile, the offense chunked it 45 times in the air. If Cleveland is a passing team, then so be it. The leading rusher had 29 yards.

C Ethan Pocic – The experienced center had no answer for DT B.J. Hill all game, who had seven tackles and sacked Flacco and almost had two other sacks as he bullrushed Pocic.

Milk Bones – I finally found a machine at the gym that I like: The vending machine

WR Jerry Jeudy – Had several key catches in the second half after being the invisible man in the first two quarters. The Bengals’ first interception was right in Jeudy’s hands, who then slapped it up in the air for a tip drill demonstration and a turnover. Jeudy also dropped that fourth-and-five early in the fourth quarter. Led the Browns in receiving yards with 66 yards on five receptions.

gettyimages-2234172840.jpg

RB Dylan Sampson – Had a tremendous game for his first NFL contest. Ran with power and grabbed some good passes as the safety valve option. With 10:04 left in the third quarter, he caught a nifty shoetop pass that was almost on the turf. 12 carries for 29 yards is nothing to write home about, but he ran with authority and showed his speed.

Fourth down attempts – The first two were converted. The third was a dropped pass by Jeudy. 2-3 is not a bad day if the Browns are going for it.

LB Devin Bush – Had a decent game with two very good stops. On the second play of the game, he stuffed Brown as he saw the running play evolve and shot the gap for a one-yard loss. In the second quarter, Burrow dumped off to RB Samaje Perine, but Bush sniffed it out for a one-yard gain before Perine could turn upfield. Seven total tackles with one batted pass and one QB hit.

TE Harold Fannin – Not a bad first game. Showed he can catch a lot of balls and had some decent yards after contact. His drop early in the fourth quarter was a third-and-five that would have kept the drive going. Nine targets, seven catches for 63 yards, a 9.0 yards per reception average.

Who do you have Brownies and Frownies for after the Browns loss to the Bengals?
