Every mistake matters in a 4-way QB competition.

Day 2 of Cleveland Browns training camp took place on Thursday. Here is our recap of the session.

Cleveland Browns Training Camp Report - Day 2 (7/24/25)

1. Berry Speaks Before Practice: Prior to practice, Browns GM Andrew Berry talked to the media. It’s no surprise that one of the biggest questions was about rookie RB Quinshon Judkins. Berry was asked if the team would consider not signing him, but he said he didn’t want to deal in hypotheticals and would take it day-to-day as they gather more details.

When it came to QB Shedeur Sanders’ speeding tickets, Berry was more vocal in his criticism in needing to be more smart. Regarding on-the-field stuff, Berry indicated that it’s not out of the question that they would keep all four quarterbacks on the roster.

2. Njoku Returns to Action: After missing Day 1 of practice due to the passing of his father, TE David Njoku returned for Day 2. Still absent were RB Jerome Ford (minor injury) and LB Jordan Hicks (personal issue). After making a nice catch on Day 1, WR Michael Woods was absent for Thursday with a hand injury. Zac Jackson of The Athletic noted that with all four quarterbacks trying to maximize reps, some of the equipment guys had to jump in for receiver reps.

3. Tracking the QB Reps: After getting no quarterbacks reps in 11-on-11s yesterday, QB Joe Flacco was first up on Thursday, getting five reps. That was followed by five reps for QB Kenny Pickett and three reps for QB Dillon Gabriel. After that, the quarterbacks split up into two groups of two again to work in 7-on-7 drills.

4. Deplit With the Pick: S Grant Delpit had a pretty quiet year in 2024, so it’s nice seeing him snag an interception in camp. Interceptions are more important in the quarterback evaluation now that things are tight and being decided on quickly. This interception was thrown by.....QB Kenny Pickett:

5. Getting the Footwork In: Here are the offensive players, including the quarterbacks, working on their footwork/agility:

6. No Luck in the Red Zone: In red zone reps, Pickett, Gabriel, and Sanders saw action, but none of them were able to get a touchdown. Here are the details:

Late in practice Browns did 11-on-11 RZ.
Kenny Pickett completed 2 short passes to Jerry Jeudy. Mason Graham forced RB fumble.
Dillon Gabriel was 1-for-3 w/shallow cross completion to Jamari Thrash.
Shedeur Sanders was the victim of bad snaps, busted plays. Didn't get a pass off

7. Drill of the Day: Here’s a nice shot of rookie DT Mason Graham doing an individual drill in camp:

— Cleveland Browns (@Browns) July 24, 2025

8. The Sanders Daily: Here is a montage of what went wrong for QB Shedeur Sanders during his red zone reps. Something we have to remember is there may be disadvantages down the depth chart for Sanders to show off his talent, when plays are broken before he can even get them going:

9. Brownies: There have been fewer Brownies to report during these first few practices, as much of the attention is on the quarterback situation.

11. Next Up: The Browns will practice on Friday at 2:00 pm. It will be the first of eight practices open to the public. The theme will be “Dawg Pound XL” day. The food truck will be Cle Chicken. The giveaway will be a Rally Towel, courtesy of Gregory Industries.

Cleveland Browns Training Camp Recap: Day 3 - Fans return to camp

Fans are back in Berea to see the quarterback competition for their own eyes.

Day 3 of Cleveland Browns training camp took place on Friday. Here is our recap of the session.

Cleveland Browns Training Camp Report - Day 3 (7/25/25)

1. Fans Back to Berea: The third day of Browns training camp saw fans attending practice for the first time this season. There will be eight sessions total available to the public — an uptick from a year ago, but still shy of how things used to be. The theme for the opening practice was “Dawg Pound XL” day, and the giveaway was a Rally Towel, courtesy of Gregory Industries.

2. Camp Amenities: Unless rain ruins our plans, we’ll be at Browns training camp either next Tuesday or Wednesday, giving a video tour of camp. Based on some pictures and clips I’ve seen so far, though, it looks like the setup is the same as last year:

3. Roster Updates: Before practice, the linebacker room took a hit when LB Jordan Hicks announced his retirement. RB Jerome Ford is close to returning from his injury, and WR Michael Woods was still out from his hand injury. The team also added a new receiver.

4. Fourth vs. Fans: He might be fourth on the depth chart, but some of these young fans are already pulling hard for QB Shedeur Sanders.

— Camryn Justice (@camijustice) July 25, 2025

5. QB Reps: Once again, Joe Flacco got the first batch of reps with the starters in 11-on-11 drills. That was followed by Kenny Pickett, and then Dillon Gabriel also had a few reps with the first-teamers. Things are moving fast and furious, as Kevin Stefanski hopes to have an updated quarterback plan by this coming Monday.

Overall, the assessment from reporters was that the offense was not thriving today. I read someone on Twitter make a joke about gearing up for 7 points per game again this year. To be fair, though, others noted that today was a day in which a lot of run game install was being done. We have to remember that there is a balance still needed in camp. Sure, you want to see the quarterbacks throw, but there are other things being worked on too.

6. Tillman Banged Up: During a red zone drill, WR Cedric Tillman was banged up trying to make a leaping grab:

7. Drill of the Day: With LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah out for the year and Hicks now retired, it’s time for LB Mohamoud Diabate to step up again:

8. Bernie is Back: After a little betting snafu last year, Browns legend Bernie Kosar is back as a contributor with the organization:

Kosar was let go last year after making an unauthorized bet for charity but now, he’s back in Berea.

— Brad Stainbrook (@StainbrookNFL) July 25, 2025

9. Musgrave on the QBs: Quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave talked to the media before practice. He called Joe Flacco a 6-6 flamethrower, said that Kenny Pickett has been “stellar,” and that the two rookie quarterbacks are progressing well. He doesn’t anticipate the reps changing too much next week.

10. Brownies: Per Daryl Ruiter, there were still a lot of Nick Chubb jerseys at practice. ... OT Tevin Jenkins and CB Tony Brown were not practicing. ... Jake Burns noted that TE Harold Fannin Jr was aligning in a bunch of spots. ... QB Shedeur Sanders had a nice intermediate completion to TE Blake Whiteheart. ... QB Dillon Gabriel had a good completion to WR Gage Larvadain. ... Both rookie quarterbacks talked to the media before practice. ... The Puppy Pound is back:

Browns training camp: Surprise candidate emerges to start opposite Myles Garrett

Cleveland Browns Mandatory Minicamp

Photo by Nick Cammett/Diamond Images via Getty Images

Browns roster has a lot of questions on offense and only a couple on defense

The Cleveland Browns have a lot of questions on the offensive side of the ball, starting at the quarterback position, but that is far from the last concern. Can Dawand Jones lockdown the left tackle spot? Will Cedric Tillman, thankfully not injured, step into the second receiver spot? What will the running game look like? Is there a second tight end ready to play a big role right away?

On the defensive side, who starts opposite of Myles Garrett and the team’s starting free safety were the two questions heading into Browns training camp until Jordan Hicks retired unexpectedly.

Starting across from Garrett comes with a lot of pressure but a lot of opportunities. Isaiah McGuire and Alex Wright were thought to be the leaders in the clubhouse for the position, but Day 4 of training camp in Berea brought Cam Thomas into contention:

Cam Thomas has been getting work as first-team DE today.

— Dan Labbe (@dan_labbe) July 26, 2025

Thomas, a third-round pick in 2022, was claimed off waivers last season and played five games in Cleveland after four with the Kansas City Chiefs. Thomas had 11 tackles, four tackles for loss, one sack, and one QB hit in just 63 snaps for Jim Schwartz’s defense.

Going into the NFL draft, Thomas showed elite agility skills:

Cameron Thomas is a DE prospect in the 2022 draft class. He scored a 8.68 RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 199 out of 1503 DE from 1987 to 2022. https://t.co/URC0nZTFd2 #RAS pic.twitter.com/zyE92FCeRj

— RAS.football (@MathBomb) April 26, 2022

Last year was Thomas’ highest graded season according to PFF (70.0). McGuire, for reference, was graded much higher at 83.3 after a poor (46.9) rookie season. Wright missed most of last season due to injury but posted his highest career grade as well (60.2).

Sam Kamara and free agent additions Joe Tryon-Shoyinka and Julian Okwara round out the top of the Browns defensive end room, along with KJ Henry.

Who do you think will start alongside Myles Garrett this year? Who gets the most snaps among the other defensive ends on the roster?

Browns QB injured, will miss practices, opens opportunities for other 3 QBs

Kenny Pickett has been up first in Browns QB competition with Joe Flacco, Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel

Everyone thinks they have an idea about how the Cleveland Browns quarterback competition will play out, but many variables could play a role in the next month and a half before the 2025 NFL season starts. The first, but unknown, variable is what the team’s decision makers have decided related to the Browns QB competition.

Berea was quiet on Sunday with the Cleveland training camp taking a break before starting up Week 2’s schedule on Monday. Besides WR Cedric Tillman being cleared to practice and QB Shedeur Sanders having a good day, including this highlight, nothing huge stood out from Saturday’s training camp practice in front of fans.

Sunday afternoon, however, we learned that QB Kenny Pickett was injured near the end of Saturday’s practice and will miss a few camp days before being reevaluated:

Browns QB Kenny Pickett injured his hamstring near the end of Saturday’s practice and is expected to re-evaluate the injury later this week, per sources. Pickett was coming off a strong couple of practices, per sources, and at least for the short term, there now will be more reps… pic.twitter.com/y2oxkt96fy

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) July 27, 2025

As noted by Zac Jackson, Pickett was active right up until the end of practice Saturday:

He threw a TD pass on the last play of practice Saturday so it either happened on that play or he was playing through it. https://t.co/CHovIp63Oj

— Zac Jackson (@AkronJackson) July 27, 2025

Injuries are often a huge part of any team’s training camp. Pickett’s injury, especially if it lingers, could greatly change the dynamic of the Browns QB competition, with veteran Joe Flacco at the front, with Dillon Gabriel and Sanders now with more chances to make an impact on the coaching staff.

Hamstring injuries have a wide range of outcomes. The noted re-evaluation coming later this week seems to indicate Pickett could be facing a longer recovery than just a slight hamstring tweak.

We will keep you up to date on all rumors and reports on this injury and how it might impact Flacco, Gabriel, and Sanders.

Cleveland Browns Training Camp Recap: Day 5 - Full pads & QB efficiency

Cleveland Browns Training Camp

The first padded practice of the year in Berea.

Day 5 of Cleveland Browns training camp took place on Monday. Here is our recap of the session.

Cleveland Browns Training Camp Report - Day 5 (7/28/25)

1. Pads and QB Update: The first padded practice of the year took place on Monday, and there were some other changes too. Gone is the format of having the quarterbacks break down into two groups on two fields.

Also, the hamstring injury to QB Kenny Pickett means that for the moment, there are more reps for the other three guys. That includes QB Joe Flacco taking all of the first-team reps.

With Kenny Pickett sidelined, most of the first-team reps will go to QB Joe Flacco, per Kevin Stefanski.

The Browns will also stop 2-spotting and breaking the offense into two fields for team drills. Stefanski said he only planned to do it the first week of training camp.

— Daniel Oyefusi (@DanielOyefusi) July 28, 2025

2. Progress for Ford: RB Jerome Ford is very close to returning to practice in full. He participated in some individual work on Monday, so I'd expect him to be in team drills this week.

3. Diontae Johnson With Some Snags: As WR David Bell and WR Michael Woods continue to miss time, WR Diontae Johnson is taking advantage. It doesn't hurt when he makes a snag like this:

.@Juiceup__3 getting back to the ball pic.twitter.com/qS23DMdH8G

— Cleveland Browns (@Browns) July 28, 2025

4. Punt Return Order: According to Zac Jackson, the punt return order during practice included WR DeAndre Carter, WR Luke Floriea, and WR Winston Wright.

5. 11 on 11 Work: Flacco began 11-on-11 drills with 5 snaps, and then QB Shedeur Sanders was next up with the second offense. Twitter was buzzing over this touchdown pass to WR Gage Larvadain:

— ESPN Cleveland (@ESPNCleveland) July 28, 2025

To me, the throw is ok, but I'm also thinking, "Ok, but CB Cameron Mitchell was also kind of...right there."

Back to Flacco's snaps, he had connected with WR Cedric Tillman on a high throw. This time, Tillman came down with it and didn't get hurt:

6. Post Practice Work: One thing that hasn't changed is that rookies are still getting post-practice work in:

— Brad Stainbrook (@StainbrookNFL) July 28, 2025

8. Brownies: OG Joel Bitonio appeared to have a rest day, and OG Teven Jenkins remained out. ... That allowed OG Lorenzo Thompson to get some first-team reps. ... Jake Burns on Twitter noted how Cleveland was installing boot Shotgun action today with pulling guards. ... TE Sal Cannella concluded the day with an open catch-and-run touchdown pass from Sanders.

9. Next Up: The Browns next practice is Tuesday Monday at 2:00 pm. It will be the fourth of eight practices open to the public, and I will try to be in attendance personally. The theme will be “Military Appreciation.” The food truck will be Edwin's. The giveaway will be a Cleveland Browns schedule poster.

Cleveland Browns Training Camp Recap: Day 7 - Tackling to the Ground

Cleveland Browns Training Camp

For the first time in the Stefanski era, tackling to the ground is in effect.

Day 7 of Cleveland Browns training camp took place Wednesday. Here is our recap of the session.

Cleveland Browns Training Camp Report - Day 7 (7/30/25)

1. Figuring Out the CB Situation: During Tuesday's practice, CB Martin Emerson suffered a season-ending non-contact Achilles injury. Now, the search in camp begins for a nickelback, as Greg Newsome will play on the outside.

Greg Newsome, who usually plays in the slot, figures to move outside full time opposite Denzel Ward in the wake of
Martin Emerson’s injury.

Kevin Stefanski said the team will work through the nickel options, which includes Cam Mitchell.

— Daniel Oyefusi (@DanielOyefusi) July 30, 2025

The depth in camp was a little short with the Emerson injury, CB Tony Brown being sidelined with an injury too, and also CB Myles Harden missing his second straight day of practice for personal reasons.

2. Live Tackling to the Ground: Cleveland returned to having a padded practice Wednesday morning. Also, for the first time in the Kevin Stefanski era, live tackling to the ground was part of practice. Unlike the session I went to yesterday, practice also was on the field closest to the fan bleachers, giving them a better view of things.

3. Flacco to Jeudy: Assuming Joe Flacco is the Browns' starting quarterback, he once had a great connection with WR Amari Cooper. Hopefully we can see that same type of magic with WR Jerry Jeudy, like this throw against CB Greg Newsome.

#Browns Joe Flacco to Jerry Jeudy with Greg Newsome pic.twitter.com/jD99ng377C

— Fred Greetham (@FredGreetham9) July 30, 2025

4. Rookie QB Reps: The Browns were mixing and matching 1s vs 2s, which included QB Shedeur Sanders at one point getting a few reps against Cleveland's first-team defense:

#Browns Shedeur Sanders gets some reps with the 2s going up against one defense and hits Gage Lavardain pic.twitter.com/lNWKRRUG8V

— Fred Greetham (@FredGreetham9) July 30, 2025

5. Defensive End Competition: The Browns need to see who their defensive end opposite DE Myles Garrett will be. It will likely be a rotation, but here is DE Isaiah McGuire causing a nice disruption:

— Browns Film Breakdown (@BrownsFilmBDN) July 30, 2025

6. Kaden Davis With the Deep Ball: Several receivers are making nice play in camp, so we're going to have to see some preseason games to make a better determination about some of these guys (because to be honest, even an amateur like me could make some good catches in a training camp atmosphere). Nonetheless, here is WR Kaden Davis hauling in a long ball from QB Dillon Gabriel:

7. Steady Ward: We still want to see more interceptions from him, but CB Denzel Ward was steady last year; here he is with a pass breakup in camp.

— Cleveland Browns (@Browns) July 30, 2025

8. Deja Vu Scare for Dawand: The cart came out for LT Dawand Jones today, which always makes you worry. However, people noted that Jones didn't seem to be in pain. It sounds like it was just cramping-related among the humid weather.

#Browns Dawand Jones just got carted inside the fieldhouse, sitting in the front seat. Didn’t look to be in too much distress.

— Mary Kay Cabot (@MaryKayCabot) July 30, 2025

9. Drill of the Day: The Browns will be counting on their young linebacker a lot this year, which became a priority in the draft after JOK's status and now LB Jordan Hicks retiring.

10. Brownies: S Chris Edmonds continues to see a lot of work up the depth chart. ... WR Jamari Thrash had a nice diving catch in 1-on-1 drills. ... Cleveland hopes to have QB Kenny Pickett back soon. ... The Browns waived/injured WR Michael Woods.

11. Next Up: The Browns next practice is Friday at 2:00 pm. It will be the sixth of eight practices open to the public. The theme will be “Youth Football.” The food truck will be Deal's Fresh Lemonade. The giveaway will be Schedule Magnets, courtesy of ESPN Cleveland.

Live in Berea: Browns training camp takeaways from Day 7

Cleveland Browns Training Camp

Martin Emerson’s injury, QB competition and more

Day 7 of the Cleveland Browns Training Camp wrapped up. It was a productive day, as the team was back in pads Wednesday morning after being in shells yesterday. A productive day as I was able to attend the session and watch practice at the CrossCountry Mortgage Campus in Berea.

Here are the takeaways from Day 7 of Training Camp.

Mason Graham looks everything as advertised

I know it’s early and they haven’t played a game yet but rookie defensive tackle Mason Graham has looked sensational so far. The rumors of Graham looking out of shape during rookie OTA’s was blown out of proportion as he doesn’t look out of shape in any way. Watching the OL/DL drills and then watching the team period, it feels like every play he was a constant disruption in the backfield along the interior. Cleveland’s interior was an issue last year, but it’s a strength and Graham will be a force along the interior aside from Maliek Collins.

Sanders gets reps against the 1st team defense

As reported by multiple beat reporters at practice, rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders got the long awaited reps people have been clamoring for. Difference? It was against the 1st team defense as he worked with the 2nd team offense.

From my vantage point, Sanders held up well. He wasn’t perfect but the fact that he didn’t look overwhelmed going up against the 1st team defense says a lot about his preparation and his approach. I would’ve liked Sanders to be a little more quick in terms of getting the ball out, but he used his legs more than I thought. He’s not necessarily someone who has uber athleticism but he has shown he can extend plays if given the opportunity.

Sanders made some nice throws throughout the session but the reps against the 1st team defense is something that was noticeable.

Live tackling at training camp for the 1st time under Stefanski

For the first time since head coach Kevin Stefanski has been the head coach of the Browns, there was live tackling at practice today. Is it a good thing that the team is tackling with pads? Yes. Is it risky? Also yes.

Live tackling at practice has it’s pros and cons, the players loved it and it helped raised the intensity of an already intense training camp so far. Football practices vary based on the gear that they are in, the team was in jerseys and shorts on Tuesday but went back to full pads on Wednesday so the intensity varies when it comes to that.

Browns search for a nickel corner starts after Emerson injury

With cornerback Martin Emerson being ruled out for the season after suffering a torn Achilles on Tuesday, the Browns cornerback room underwent some reshuffling. Cornerback Greg Newsome now bumps to the outside while the team looks for another nickel corner to fill in with Ward and Newsome.

Cornerback Cam Mitchell had a rough day today but it’s training camp, it’s how it goes. Myles Harden, who played sparingly last season could see an extended look, same goes for Nik Needham who didn’t play at all last season as he was recovering from a knee injury he suffered in 2023. Could the team look for another corner to help bolster the room? Likely but the search for the starting nickel cornerback will probably take a while to figure out.

Shedeur Sanders, offense and Browns roster thoughts

Training camp for the Cleveland Browns officially started last week and continued through Wednesday afternoon before a day off on Thursday. A lot has happened throughout camp, but the real action began when the team practiced in full pads after starting out in “shells” (Shells are basically helmets, jerseys, and shorts).

It’s early in Browns training camp, but it’s a lot to discuss and a lot more to happen before the team’s Week 1 game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

New Year, new mindset

If there is one thing that has been repeated throughout this training camp by multiple beat reporters and rumblings, it is one word specifically: Intensity!

That’s it for Browns training camp practice No. 5. Much different intensity from the first day of pads compared to last year at the Greenbrier. All QBs had their moments today.

— Daniel Oyefusi (@DanielOyefusi) July 28, 2025

#Browns QB Joe Flacco on the intensity of camp this year:

"I think what we're talking about is just the mindset of a winner and a winning football team and what that takes...There's a way that a winning team takes a field and approaches their craft." pic.twitter.com/5f1bTMaG38

— Camryn Justice (@camijustice) July 24, 2025

Brown OL Joel Bitonio: “We talked about intensity. We talked about energy. … We’re gonna have a high intensity, physical training camp.” pic.twitter.com/uE7puFhMVZ

— Daniel Oyefusi (@DanielOyefusi) July 23, 2025

Judging from last year’s camp, the intensity wasn’t there as it should have been (you can decide for yourself why that was the case), but this year seems different. Having a competitive camp can help bring the best out of everyone, as well as boost team morale in some cases. Having a camp with this amount of intensity can help the team in terms of having them more battle-tested.

Expect the intensity to continue when the joint practices start up soon, which could lead to some feisty interactions.

Offense has a mixed bag of days

It has been a topic since training camp started. How will the offense look?

It’s been a mixed bag. Early on, the offense has looked rough. Recently, it has started to look better. For those who are panicking, don’t.

Keep in mind, the offense that is being installed isn’t the same offense that was being run last year. It’s an adjustment period for everyone on the offensive side of the ball. Looking better recently is a good thing and a sign that the adjustment is coming along to the new offense.

Stacking days and continuing to get better should be the main goal for the offense, considering how the offense is not going to be caught up like the defense is.

Shedeur Sanders and his QB reps

It was going to be a talking point. Considering that the Browns drafted two rookie QBs, the topic of how many reps the QBs were going to receive was going to be a topic of discussion.

I kept track of how many sets of team drills each Browns QB received through Week 1 of training camp. I think it will be a good sense of how the staff is prioritizing the QB battle as time goes on.

By my unofficial count, Cleveland ran 42 sets of team drills (11v11, 7v7,…

— Daniel Oyefusi (@DanielOyefusi) July 26, 2025

If we filter the sets of team drills by first-team offense (which I’m defining by the offensive line groupings, which have been fairly consistent), this is the QB breakdown:

Flacco (8)
Pickett (7)
Gabriel (4) https://t.co/k4miEiXWRH

— Daniel Oyefusi (@DanielOyefusi) July 26, 2025

When it comes to how all four have looked, it’s been a mixed bag. With Kenny Pickett being sidelined due to a hamstring injury, it has opened the door for a certain quarterback to take advantage of it.

He’s been getting reps with the second-team offense for 3 straight practices now. I know everyone wants to know when/if he’ll get time with the starters and it’s been asked. When they want to, they will. https://t.co/9rMXhYx0wA

— Daniel Oyefusi (@DanielOyefusi) July 28, 2025

Football depth charts are fluid throughout training camp, and things change every day. Once practice is over, coaches update their depth charts and their plans based on what they see.

If you are working with the 3’s one day, the following day you could work with the 2’s. Reps are earned, they aren’t given. Only the Browns coaching staff will determine if Sanders has earned the right to work with the 1’s. Not the outside noise.

Considering how Sanders has gotten extended looks with the 2’s and will likely get more reps with the Pickett injury, it feels inevitable when Sanders gets that opportunity.

If he does, he has to make the most of it. It doesn’t hurt to be patient.

Sebastian Gutierrez returns to Cleveland for the second time in his career

The Cleveland Browns have claimed OT Sebastian Gutierrez off of waivers from the San Francisco 49ers today, according to team reports. He returns to Northeast Ohio after spending a month with the team during the 2024 season.

The 6’6”, 308-pound offensive tackle originally entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Patriots in October of 2022, and has spent the entirety of his career bouncing around the practice squads of the Broncos, Raiders, Chiefs, Colts, Browns, and 49ers since then.

He’ll look to try and make an impact over the final part of training camp and in the preseason in the hopes of locking down a practice squad spot.

Cleveland Browns Training Camp Recap: Day 9 - Down to 2 quarterbacks

Cleveland Browns Training Camp

One quarterback has a hamstring injury, the other has arm soreness.

Day 9 of Cleveland Browns training camp took place Saturday morning. Here is our recap of the session.

Cleveland Browns Training Camp Report - Day 9 (8/2/25)

1. Early Morning Injury Precautions: Before practice, head coach Kevin Stefanski announced that CB Greg Newsome, who landed funny on his shoulder after breaking up a pass on Friday, would sit out of today’s practice to rest it. He also said that DE Myles Garrett would be held out of practice as a precaution. Also, QB Kenny Pickett would continue to work in individual drills only.

2. Drill of the Day: Who said he’s not a blocker? Here is a clip of TE Harold Fannin holding his own in a blocking drill against S Ronnie Hickman:

— Cleveland Browns (@Browns) August 2, 2025

3. Basic Fun: I know it’s such a basic catch-and-throw, but we haven’t had a chance to mention TE David Njoku’s name this camp yet. Here’s a smooth completion to him from QB Joe Flacco. I have a feeling we’re going to be seeing this in Week 1:

#Browns Joe Flacco to David Njoku on Saturday pic.twitter.com/E4P6qkH7hj

— Fred Greetham (@FredGreetham9) August 2, 2025

4. Shedeur Sanders Resting: People were wondering what was going on in practice when QB Shedeur Sanders wasn’t getting any work in team drills. After practice, the team said it was due to “arm soreness.”

Official team reason for Shedeur Sanders not throwing in any team drills was 'arm soreness.' Which is interesting since he's had the fewest reps overall of the 4 QBs.

— Tony Grossi (@TonyGrossi) August 2, 2025

5. Red Zone / Goal Line Drills: With Sanders not doing team drills, Flacco and QB Dillon Gabriel got all of the team reps. It started with Gabriel and the second-team offense up against the first-team defense, before Flacco came on with the first-team offense. It was all pass plays starting at the 10 yard line, and the defense won the battles. Gabriel was 1-of-6, while Flacco was 1-of-3:

Just look at this as the defense won the battle rather than Dillon Gabriel failing to put the ball in the end zone. #Browns pic.twitter.com/9N5IuXlXvH

— Jeff Schudel (@jsproinsider) August 2, 2025

6. Not Fooling Denzel: We talked about how WR Diontae Johnson has been having a nice camp, but it’s tough to fool top cornerback Denzel Ward, and they also had plenty of battles against each other from his Pittsburgh days. Here is Ward defending a pass tightly against Johnson:

— Browns Film Breakdown (@BrownsFilmBDN) August 2, 2025

7. Play of the Day: QB Joe Flacco continues to look silky smooth in practice. Here he is lofting the ball perfectly for a touchdown to WR Greg Larvadain in the back right corner of the end zone. The two had also connected earlier on a deep post route.

8. Brownies: DT Shelby Harris had some passes broken up. ... CB Myles Harden did a good job in coverage. ... DE Isaiah McGuire returned after missing a practice. ... With running back reps lately, it’s been RB Jerome Ford and RB Dylan Sampson as the one-two tandem.

9. Next Up: The Browns next practice is Monday at 2:00 pm. It will be the final of eight practices open to the public. The theme will be “Orange and Brown.” The food truck will be Uncle Bacon’s BBQ. The giveaway will be Schedule Magnets, courtesy of ESPN Cleveland.

NFL draft picks: NFL history says to lower expectations for Browns Mason Graham, all picks

Cleveland Browns Training Camp

Browns roster needs an infusion of talent, including with Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders, but lower those hopes

The Cleveland Browns seven-man NFL draft class sits at six currently, with RB Quinshon Judkins unsigned and things up in the air after his domestic violence charge in Florida. QBs Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders continue to compete for the starting quarterback job, despite an injury impacting that on Saturday. DT Mason Graham might be the least talked-about top-five pick in Browns history, while LB Carson Schwesinger has a lot on his plate.

RB Dylan Sampson might have a much bigger role given the Judkins situation, while TE Harold Fannin Jr. could form a high-quality duo at the position with David Njoku.

Expecting a lot from any rookie is a fool's errand, however. We all remember when a first-year player like WR Puka Nacua has an amazing season, but, on average, most rookies are highly limited in their first season. The transition from college ball to the NFL is tough, both in the amount of information involved as well as the grind of a 17-game season with more physicality.

It is why seasons like Nacua’s are exceptions, not the rule. In fact, very few rookies even get a chance to make an impact on the field recently:

Over the last three years, 22% of NFL draft picks have started at least 8 games as rookies.

Something to keep in mind to avoid the "team X solved their problem with this draft pick" trap!

— Sheil Kapadia (@SheilKapadia) July 31, 2025

In general, players seem to take a big leap going into their second season, but their initial one tends to be far more limited.

For each of Cleveland’s NFL draft picks, you can see reasons for both hope and caution in creating expectations:

  • Graham is paired with Myles Garrett and a lot of talent on the defensive line, but he will be dealing with the best of the best offensive linemen week in and week out, which will wear on him
  • Schwesinger will get the snaps, unlike most rookies, but will have to deal with the best offensive minds doing everything they can to get him out of position and second-guessing himself while he also tries to help get the rest of the defense in position
  • Fannin has a huge jump from the talent at Bowling Green State University, but beyond Jerry Jeudy and Njoku, Fannin could be next in line for targets
  • Sampson now has a chance to step into a more important role as Judkins’ situation plays out, but has been locked in as more of a third-down back when he was selected and may not have the size to get enough carries as a rookie
  • Gabriel and Sanders not only have to compete with each other but Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett. Third and fifth-round quarterbacks have low success rates overall and the Browns offense has a lot of work to find success, which could limit whoever is at quarterback.

What are your expectations for the Browns rookie class? Who do you think is most productive of the group this year? Are you surprised by the recent NFL draft data posted above?

Jeff Lange / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

Browns QB competition reaches Week 3 as the first preseason game is Friday night

The Cleveland Browns return to the field in Berea for Week 3 of training camp with a lot of questions, starting with QBs Kenny Pickett and Shedeur Sanders after injuries have sidelined both. Pickett was injured at the end of Week 1 of Browns training camp, but returned to practice Saturday on a very limited basis.

Sanders, due to a sore shoulder, joined Pickett on the injury list and left Joe Flacco, currently the top quarterback in the competition, and Dillon Gabriel to throw passes before Sunday’s day off.

Week 3 brings the start of preseason action for most teams (besides the two who played in the Hall of Fame Game on Thursday), including Cleveland’s opener against the Carolina Panthers. Monday also brings with it the last fan access practice of this year’s Browns training camp, leaving a full month of practices without fans, including joint practices.

This week’s schedule looks like this:

Monday, August 4 - With Fans

11:20 a.m. – Offensive coordinator Tommy Rees, defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, assistant head coach/special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone and select players available

1:30 p.m. – Kevin Stefanski available

2:00 p.m. – Practice

Tuesday, August 5

Travel to Carolina

Wednesday, August 6

TBD – Joint practice at Carolina Panthers

TBD – Kevin Stefanski and select players available

Thursday, August 7

No scheduled availability

Friday, August 8

7:00 p.m. – Cleveland Browns at Carolina Panthers

Saturday, August 9

Browns QB Shedeur Sanders embracing pressure of first NFL training camp

Cleveland Browns Training Camp

Photo by Nick Cammett/Diamond Images via Getty Images

Rookie sits down with Cleveland legend Bernie Kosar to discuss how things are going as Sanders transitions to the NFL.

The Cleveland Browns have had a horrible time of it when it comes to finding a quarterback over the past 25 years.

It appeared for a brief moment that the decades-long search had concluded in 2018 when the team selected Baker Mayfield with the No. 1 overall selection in that year’s NFL Draft. But that came to a bad end after Mayfield suffered a shoulder injury in 2021, which ultimately led the Browns to trade him to the Carolina Panthers, and then they took a “big swing-and-miss” by trading for Deshaun Watson.

Four years later, Mayfield is stacking division titles with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, while the Browns are back in the quarterback market with Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, and Shedeur Sanders all vying for a roster spot this summer.

Sanders recently sat down with Browns legend Bernie Kosar, the last Cleveland quarterback to have sustained success with the team, for a chat about quarterback mechanics, life as an NFL rookie, and Sanders’ approach to football.

A few highlights include:

  • Sanders emphasized taking each day of training camp as it comes and focusing on consistent improvement. He said he approaches every situation with calm and confidence, describing pressure as something he embraces and is comfortable dealing with.
  • When asked about his composure in the pocket, Sanders attributed it to his comfort with pressure and a mindset shaped by life’s challenges. He said being under pressure feels “normal and helps him stay focused.
  • Sanders said he enjoys reading blitz coverage, noting that he focuses on speeding up his decision-making and getting the ball out quickly.
  • While acknowledging he’s not getting as many reps as he’s used to, Sanders is keeping a positive outlook, views each day as the next part of the journey, and focuses on doing his part the right way.
  • Sanders received a lot of criticism before the draft, but said he values remaining true to himself and being genuine on and off the field. He doesn’t feel the need to “fake” anything and sees giving back to his teammates and the community as a natural part of who he is.

This was by no means an in-depth interview, but it still provided a nice moment for Sanders to discuss how things have been going so far as the Browns enter a busy week that includes a joint practice with the Carolina Panthers on Wednesday, and the two teams opening their preseason schedule on Friday night in Charlotte.

Cleveland Browns Training Camp Recap: Day 10 - Final day for fans

Cleveland Browns Training Camp

Another quarterback sits out of practice with an injury.

Day 10 of Cleveland Browns training camp took place Monday. Here is our recap of the session.

Cleveland Browns Training Camp Report - Day 10 (8/4/25)

1. More QB News: The oldest quarterback of them all (Joe Flacco), who can come off the couch at any time, is apparently the only one who doesn’t get hurt. Before practice started, head coach Kevin Stefanski announced that QB Dillon Gabriel would be limited at the final practice in front of fans due to hamstring tightness. Despite being limited, Gabriel still took part in some team drills.

QB Shedeur Sanders, who rested on Saturday due to shoulder tightness, returned to action. Veteran QB Kenny Pickett remained out of some drills still, but did participate in some 7-on-7s. So, we have Flacco-Gabriel practicing this past Saturday, and then Flacco-Sanders on Monday.

2. Joe Thomas is Back: It’s always great to see Joe Thomas maintain his affiliation with the Browns. He was at practice on Monday as a guest coach, hanging around the offensive linemen.

3. Delpit Returns to Action: After being out since the beginning of camp with an undisclosed injury, S Grant Delpit returned to action, paired up with S Ronnie Hickman.

4. Best vs. Best: ddd

5. A Different Year: This year’s training camp had a different feel than previous years for fans, and one of the reasons might be that all the public practices were at the beginning of camp. There were fewer simulated situations in two-minute drills, for example, and no field goals that I can recall. That changed a bit today, as the team will probably move more into it over the next couple weeks.

On the first two-minute attempt (scenario: 22 seconds left, down 2, ball on opposing 41 yard line), Flacco led the Browns to a 51-yard field goal try, which K Dustin Hopkins nailed.

Then, it was Sanders’ turn to lead the twos and threes. Sanders had a nice throw to WR Luke Floriea to set up a game-winning field goal by backup K Andre Szmyt.

6. The Forgotten Men: While all attention has been on the Browns’ quarterback competition this camp, let’s not forget that the team’s top two picks were on defense. Jim Schwartz talked before practice about what he’s seen from both of his top rookies:

7. Brownies: RB Pierre Strong, LB Mohamoud Diabate, DE Sam Kamara, and DB Anthony Kendall were not practicing. ... OL Zak Zinter walked off the field with a member of the medical staff. ... DE Myles Garrett returned to action.

8 Next Up: The Browns will travel to Carolina on Tuesday, with a joint practice taking place Wednesday. Due to construction around Panthers training camp, they are not hosting fans for practices in 2025 or 2026.

Browns reportedly signing veteran running back

2175685317.jpg

The Cleveland Browns have a busy week ahead of them as they enter the third week of training camp.

Today, the team is back on the practice field in Berea for the final session open to the public. Fans in attendance should be excited as rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders is expected to practice after being sidelined on Saturday with soreness in his throwing shoulder.

Then it is off to Charlotte, where the Browns will have a joint practice with the Carolina Panthers before the two teams meet Friday night at Bank of America Stadium for their opening preseason.

Not content to sit idly by while the coaches and players put in the work, Cleveland’s front office has also been busy today.

First came a report that the team is planning to sign former track star and hopeful tight end Mitch Van Voreen to the 90-man roster.

#Browns signing former #Bengals running back Trayveon Williams today per a league source @AggieFootball @CEKing_Football @KPRC2

— Aaron Wilson (@AaronWilson_NFL) August 4, 2025

Then, early this afternoon, a report dropped from Houston-based NFL reporter Aaron Wilson that the club is planning to sign running back Trayveon Williams, a six-year veteran who primarily saw action on special teams with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Originally a sixth-round selection by the Bengals in the 2019 NFL Draft, the 5-foot-8 and 206-pound Williams spent six seasons with the Bengals. In 68 career games, he only had 62 carries for 307 yards and no touchdowns, while adding 15 receptions for 74 yards.

He did log 873 snaps on special teams for the Bengals, so he can be an asset in that part of the game.

Williams signed with the New England Patriots in May as a free agent, but was released on Friday.

Williams joins a running back room with veterans Jerome Ford, Pierre Strong Jr., and Toa Taua, along with rookies Dylan Sampson and Ahmani Marshall. Missing, of course, is second-round draft pick Quinshon Judkins, who remains unsigned and away from the team while dealing with a domestic violence and battery charge.

If Williams can get up to speed quickly, there may be an opportunity for him to get on the field against the Panthers, as the Browns are likely not going to play their top-line players much, if at all.

Browns 1st unofficial depth chart

imagn-26757544.jpg

The Cleveland Browns are off on Tuesday, heading east to visit the Carolina Panthers for a joint practice on Wednesday and the first preseason game on Friday night. Monday, as required by the NFL, the team provided its first “unofficial” depth chart of the preseason. No huge surprises, but a lot of names all over the list, including four rookies either starting or in a position to play a big role already.

Besides the rookies, a few interesting notes litter the depth chart:

  • The QBs being listed, as expected, with the vets up front, then the two rookies
  • Diontae Johnson listed behind Jeudy as an outside receiver, with Jamari Thrash “starting” over him
  • Alex Wright listed opposite Myles Garrett with strong depth at the defensive end position
  • Sam Kamara being listed at DT after being listed as a LB or DE at different times in his career
  • Mohamoud Diabate starting over Jerome Baker at WILL
  • Nik Needham being listed at FS instead of CB

Browns announce starting QB for preseason opener

gettyimages-2226817211.jpg

The Cleveland Browns are in Charlotte this week for a joint practice with the Carolina Panthers as the two teams prepare for Friday night’s preseason opener.

And now we know who will be at quarterback for the Browns as head coach Kevin Stefanski announced this morning that rookie Shedeur Sanders will get the start against the Panthers, according to the team’s website.

While that will send the hype train for Sanders into overdrive, the move is not all that surprising given the current situation with Cleveland’s ever-expanding quarterback room.

“My expectations for Shedeur are not different than the rest of the guys, honestly. We expect him to go operate. When you get into these preseason games, you try and keep it very simple so guys can play fast. All concepts that our players know and not think too much and just play ball.” – head coach Kevin Stefanski

Stefanski said the veteran Joe Flacco, who is probably in line to open the season as the starting quarterback, will not play on Friday, as Stefanski prefers to limit how much he exposes the starters in preseason.

Fellow veteran Kenny Pickett and rookie Dillon Gabriel have been dealing with hamstring injuries that have limited their ability to participate in practice, so Stefanski has ruled them out.

Finally, there is Tyler Huntley, who knows the offense from spending time with the Browns in training camp last year. But he was just signed to the roster on Monday to provide a healthy body, so while he will play on Friday night, there is no need to start him.

Shedeur Sanders will start at quarterback against the Panthers on Friday pic.twitter.com/DbyoAZ9f1w

— Cleveland Browns (@Browns) August 6, 2025

This will be a good test for Sanders, who has been doing and saying all the right things since the start of training camp. He hasn’t let a limited amount of reps get him down, and he should see a fair amount of action during today’s joint practice with the Panthers.

Carolina head coach Dave Canales has stated that he plans to play his starters in the first two preseason games, so while the Browns may not be going up against the best the Panthers have on every series, Sanders will have at some time facing players who will actually be part of Carolina’s defense this season.

Friday will be a nice opportunity for Sanders, and there is no doubt that the reaction to his performance will be filled with the level of reasonable analysis that has always surrounded the Browns and their quarterbacks in the preseason.

Browns QB competition: Things have ‘shifted’ with what will ‘likely’ happen

imagn-26421103.jpg

When it comes to the Cleveland Browns quarterback competition, everyone thinks they know what will happen or should happen. The way the Browns are handling things, it seems they want to protect rookie QB Shedeur Sanders while giving Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett and rookie Dillon Gabriel every shot to take the starting job.

Flacco has been installed as “QB1” for Cleveland, after Pickett’s injury, while Sanders will start the Browns first preseason game on Friday against the Carolina Panthers.

Cleveland GM Andrew Berry invested a fifth-round pick, along with QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson, to acquire Pickett first this offseason. Then, Flacco was signed to a contract worth $4.25 million shortly before the NFL draft, where Gabriel (third round) and Sanders (fifth round) were selected. Given the investment in all four, could the Browns keep them all?

Adam Schefter now believes so:

Browns are more likely than not to carry four quarterbacks on their 53-man roster.

🎧 https://t.co/y6LAnfVzEd pic.twitter.com/6pPhP0NcB8

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) August 6, 2025

Keeping all four to start the season would not be new; Cleveland did that last year for one day before releasing QB Tyler Huntley, who they just re-signed and is likely to play Friday night. Keeping four quarterbacks through a few games of the season would be unusual:

Since 2013, there have been four instances where a team has carried 4 healthy QBs into three straight games: Deshaun Watson's non-suspension suspension season in Houston, first four games of the 2018 Dolphins, and two stints from the back half of the 2016 Browns. https://t.co/gnNf3sqfrl pic.twitter.com/nuYccqVgtX

— Anthony Reinhard (@reinhardNFL) July 25, 2025

Schefter couched his comments based on discussions with people around the league. Perhaps that is what Berry is communicating to other teams that come sniffing around his quarterback depth chart. Trade leverage can be a huge piece of the puzzle, especially if another team suffers a major QB injury.

For now, most teams decide to keep, as Schefter notes, “8th offensive lineman, 9th defensive lineman, 6th linebacker, 7th receiver” instead of keeping three quarterbacks, much less four.

How likely do you think it is that the Browns would keep all four quarterbacks for at least a few games? Share your thoughts with us in the comment section below
