The Broncos hosted Texas tight end Gunnar Helm for a pre-draft visit.

According to 9NEWS Denver’s Mike Klis, the Denver Broncos hosted Texas tight end Gunnar Helm for a pre-draft visit. This meeting did not count as a top-30 as Helm prepped at Cherry Creek High School so this visit counts as a local visit. This is the second time the Broncos have met with Helm, as they had a formal interview with him at the Combine.

Helm is a 6’5”, 241-pound tight end and is viewed as one of the top tight end prospects in the 2025 NFL Draft. The Athletic’s lead draft analyst Dane Brugler as Helm graded as his 64th overall prospect in the draft and ranks him as his fifth best tight end in the draft.

NFL.com’s draft analyst Lance Zierlein compares Helm to Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson and calls Helm a tight end with good size and soft hands.

A combination tight end with good size and soft hands, Helm developed rapidly in the high-scoring Texas offense. He is a capable route runner who can be used on all three levels but was allowed free releases and frequent open looks that he won’t see as a pro. His size, hands and feel for space make him a quarterback-friendly target capable of moving the sticks at opportune times. He’ll need to thicken his lowers and improve his hand usage to handle in-line blocking chores in the NFL. Helm projects as a future TE2 with three-down potential.

The Broncos did sign veteran tight end Evan Engram to a two-year deal in free agency, but could still use another premium pick on the position in the draft. Engram is a 30+ year old tight end coming off shoulder surgery so having some depth and developmental rookie behind him would make sense. Also, the Broncos desperately need some pass-catching help at the tight end position so adding another weapon would also make sense and make life easier for quarterback Bo Nix.

Helm is a solid all-around tight end who would give Sean Payton and the Broncos offense another big target to utilize in the middle of the field. He is a reliable pass-catcher and has the potential to blossom into a full-time starter in the future.

He is one of a few tight ends the Broncos could target on day two of the draft. Right now, I believe he is a third-round pick and will go after the likes of Mason Taylor and Elijah Arroyo but could be in play for the Broncos in the third round.

The explosive defensive lineman could be an option for the Broncos in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

One prospect who may interest the Denver Broncos in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft is Ole Miss interior defensive lineman, Walter Nolen. He is a 6’4”, 296-pound defensive lineman who is considered one of the top defensive prospects in the draft. The Athletic’s lead draft analyst Dane Brugler has Nolen graded as his 29th overall prospect in the 2025 NFL Draft and ranked him as the fourth-best defensive lineman in the draft.

Nolen transferred from Texas A&M to Ole Miss this past season and had himself a breakout year. He played in 13 games this past season and totaled 48 tackles, 13 tackles for a loss, 6.5 sacks, and 3 pass deflections.

Scouting Report

Strengths

  • Very athletic and twitchy
  • Explosive first step
  • Good body control and navigates the trenches well
  • Strong punch and turns speed into power
  • High-end pass rush potential
  • Very good run defender who attacks the gaps and gets into the backfield
  • Good core strength
  • High upside player

Weaknesses

  • Needs a bit of development still
  • Struggles to finish the play at times
  • Can be overaggressive, lose sight of the ball carrier, and have missed opportunities

What other analysts are saying about Ole Miss IDL Walter Nolen

NFL Network’s lead draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah on IDL Walter Nolen

Nolen is a twitchy defensive tackle who fits best in a penetrating style of defense. Ole Miss slanted him quite often in its defensive scheme and he created some early wins versus the run and pass. As a pass rusher, he can really get off the ball with urgency and roll his hips to jolt blockers. He flashes a violent hump move and can redirect with ease. He needs to improve his vision and awareness, though. He wins a lot of battles but fails to win the war because of his inability to locate the ball. Against the run, he can generate negative plays for the offense by shooting gaps, but he gets caught and washed at times. Overall, Nolen is extremely talented and disruptive, but he hasn’t come close to reaching his potential. If he lands with the right scheme/coach, he could emerge as one of the better players in this draft class.

NFL.com’s draft analyst Lance Zierlein on IDL Walter Nolen

Nolen has NFL-starting size but won’t blow you away with his physical traits. However, he gains quick advantages with his explosiveness into contact and ability to beat up blockers when singled up. He has the athletic talent to play into gaps but needs to play with better hands to keep himself clean at the point of attack. He wins as a rusher with his athleticism and play strength, and doesn’t need to be schemed for. The pass rush still requires refinement, but he already flashes quick-win moves that foreshadow good pressure and sack production as a pro. Nolen’s blend of explosiveness and playmaking talent create high upside as a three-down interior lineman.

Final Thoughts

Nolen is one of my favorite prospects in the draft.

He is a high-upside player who is an explosive athlete with pass-rush potential that fits the Broncos defense very well. They’re an attacking defense that wants their interior defenders to get into the backfield and after the quarterback consistently. That is what Nolen does best and is someone who could flourish under defensive line coach Jamar Cain.

Keep in mind that Zach Allen, John Franklin-Myers, and Malcolm Roach will all be free agents at the end of the season. You have to assume that Allen will get extended at some point but adding a player like Nolen would make things a little bit easier next year. He would also add depth and strengthen the Broncos' defensive line depth. You can never have enough interior pass rushers on your roster as the Eagles proved this past year.

I would consider Nolen at 20th overall if the Broncos plan on addressing running back and tight end later in the draft. The defensive line is the strength of this class and adding one of the better ones should be a priority for the Broncos.

Future Broncos: Texas tight end Gunnar Helm

Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl - Texas v Arizona State

Texas Longhorns tight end Gunnar Helm is a prospect the Denver Broncos might consider late on Day 2 or early on Day 3 of the 2025 NFL Draft.

The Denver Broncos lessened their need at tight end during free agency by signing longtime veteran Evan Engram to a two-year deal. Coaches and fans across Broncos Country are hoping he can prove to be a ‘joker’ in their offense, but even if that happens, the Broncos still need another developmental tight end to add to their room long-term.

Tight end is a position of strength in the 2025 NFL Draft. Cherry Creek High School alumnus and Colorado native Gunnar Helm of the Texas Longhorns is one prospect to watch. The Broncos had a formal interview with Helm at the NFL Combine and recently hosted him for a pre-draft visit at Dove Valley.

With Ja’Tavion Sanders drafted by the Carolina Panthers last year, Helm finally had the top spot on the Longhorns’ depth chart in 2024. He didn’t disappoint with the opportunity that presented itself. He went on to set Longhorns team records at the position with 60 catches for 786 yards and 7 touchdowns.

By doing so, Helm has gone from a projected late-round pick to a prospect who could hear his name called in the Top 100 picks of the 2025 NFL Draft. Let’s take a deeper look at Helm as a prospect, his strengths and weaknesses, and when the Broncos should consider taking him in April.

Player Profile: Gunnar Helm — Tight End — Texas

Height: 6’5” | Weight: 241 pounds | Arm Length: 32-3/4” | Hand Size: 9-7/8”

40-yard dash: 4.84 seconds | 10-yard split: 1.69 seconds | Vertical: 30” | 3-Cone: 7.15 seconds

Statistics at Texas: 55 games played, 79 receptions, 1,022 yards, 9 touchdowns.

Film Room & Highlights

Hart’s Scouting Report

Positives:

  • Sports great size, wingspan and catch radius and knows how to use it to his advantage
  • Versatility — played in-line, out wide, and in the slot during his collegiate career
  • Sure-handed tight end who is a reliable safety valve
  • Knack for getting open especially vertically up the seam
  • Offers quality yard after the catch ability
  • Admirable effort and ample experience pass blocking
  • Record-breaking season showcased quality games against top competition
  • Multi-sport athletic background and Helm’s a better athlete than his RAS indicates

Negatives:

  • Needs to add more strength and technical refinement as a run blocker
  • Had a great season, but gets the one-year wonder moniker
  • Somewhat schemed open for easy touches that might not be as effective in the pros
  • Still needs more time growing into a fuller or more developed route tree
  • Might only be a TE2 at the next level and not a team’s top option

Hart’s Projection: Top 100 Selection | Late Day 2, Early Day 3 Value

Texas’ Gunnar Helm is one of the many potential starting TEs in the 2025 NFL Draft. Love the ball skills and body control to make difficult catches.

Why the Denver Broncos should consider drafting Helm

Even if you are high on Engram’s potential in the Broncos’ offense over the next season or two, the Broncos still need to add to the tight end room. While I don’t think signing Engram should preclude Denver from drafting with either of their first two selections, I think it gives them the ability to sit and wait until the third or fourth round to add somebody.

Critics have pointed to Helm’s underwhelming combine performance as a reason to drop him down boards or question his NFL potential. However, it’s important to remember he had suffered an ankle sprain while participating in drills. His athleticism isn’t top tier, but his multi-sport background shows up on tape with smoothness and intent regarding his movement and overall ability.

Helm might never be a dominant tight end at the next level. However, has the traits and makeup to become a reliable contributor for a long time. Ultimately, I think Helm will be drafted on late on Day 2 or early on Day 3 in April—just like his teammate Sanders was in the 2024 NFL Draft. If the Broncos address other major needs in the first two rounds, Helm would be a viable option for them with one of their next two selections.

Horse Tracks: Should a new contract for Nik Bonitto be a priority for the Broncos right now?

Cleveland Browns v Denver Broncos

Edge rusher is a key position in today’s NFL - especially in the pass-heavy AFC West. So signing Nik Bonitto to a long-term deal sooner rather than later should be a no-brainer.

Good morning, Broncos Country!

Pro Football & Sports Network predicted every NFL team’s biggest need post-free agency, and it may be a slight surprise that Denver’s “position of need” came on ... defense.

After all, Denver added ex-49er defensive standouts Dre Greenlaw and Talanoa Hufanga, while also re-signing run-stuffing tackle D.J. Jones, as the bell to open free agency rang.

And this was for a defense that already had high marks in 2024. In fact, PFSN ranked Denver No. 1 for all of the NFL.

So what’s the need?

Edge rusher, PFSN says.

“You could quibble with their edge-rushing depth,” the network argued, adding that Vance Joseph’s scheme to generate pressure from disguised fronts and blitzes utilized extra rushers more than most teams.”

But it’s not just getting more edge rushers — as good of an idea as that is.

In PFSN’s eyes, it’s that the Broncos should be signing Nik Bonitto’s new contract immediately if not sooner.

“Nik obviously had a breakout year. He’s a dynamic player, and we want him here a long time.” - George Paton

Bonitto, who had a breakout season in 2024 and in 2025 will be entering the last year of his rookie deal, tallied 13.5 sacks, two forced fumbles (and one recovery) and one interception for a score. In just three seasons, Bonitto’s career pressure rate of 15% ranks 10th in the NFL.

“It’s worth trying to hammer out an extension, given the booming edge rusher market [next offseason],” PFN stated, adding that although Bonitto won’t touch Miles Garrett’s $40 million per year average, “he could end up in the same zip code” ($28 million per year) as guys like Josh Hines-Allen and Brian Burns.

Spotrac projects that Bonitto could land a four-year, $102.1 million contract, making him the third-highest-paid edge rusher in the NFL.

Although many fans might reasonably argue that the biggest need for Denver would be on offense now, specifically running back, few would argue against shoring up a pass rushing attack.

Broncos GM George Paton says a contract for Bonitto is a priority.

“Nik obviously had a breakout year,” Paton said during the NFL Combine in February, adding that Bonitto “took the next step” in his talent level last season. “He’s a dynamic player, and we want him here a long time.”

Should the Broncos draft Oregon TE Terrance Ferguson and reunite him with QB Bo Nix?

NCAA Football: Oregon at Stanford

Darren Yamashita-Imagn Images

Could we see the Broncos draft one of Bo Nix’s favorite targets at Oregon on day two of the 2025 NFL Draft?

One prospect the Denver Broncos have shown interest in during the draft process is Oregon tight end Terrance Ferguson. He is a 6’5”, 247-pound tight end and is viewed as one of the better receiving options at tight end in the draft. The Athletic’s draft guru Dane Brugler has Ferguson ranked as his 98th overall player in the 2025 NFL Draft and graded as his 7th best tight end in the draft.

He played a total of four seasons at Oregon and was a productive pass-catching weapon for the Ducks offense. During his four seasons at Oregon, Ferguson totaled 134 receptions for 1,537 yards and 16 touchdowns. This past season, he totaled 43 receptions for 591 yards and 3 touchdowns. In 2023, in Bo Nix’s final season at Oregon, Ferguson was one of his top targets as he totaled 42 receptions for 412 yards and 6 touchdowns.

Scouting Report

Strengths

  • Good size and length, long arms, and looks the part of an NFL tight end
  • Athletic and has run after the catch potential
  • Dangerous in the middle of the field and on seam routes
  • Smooth route runner who can create separation
  • Had chunk plays off screens and showcased his ability to make defenders miss at times
  • Tracks the ball well, has good body control, and made difficult catches
  • Good straight-line speed and had a 4.63 40-time at the Combine
  • Reliable pass catcher with a low drop rate

Weaknesses

  • The potential is there for him to improve as a run blocker but it’s adequate at best right now
  • Likely just a move tight end in the NFL due to his lack of toughness and grit in the run game
  • Struggles at times with contested catches

Terrance Ferguson RAS

Terrance Ferguson is a TE prospect in the 2025 draft class. He scored a 9.84 #RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 20 out of 1218 TE from 1987 to 2025.

— Kent Lee Platte (@MathBomb) March 11, 2025

What other analysts are saying about Oregon TE Terrance Ferguson

NFL.com’s draft analyst Lance Zierlein on TE Terrance Ferguson

Productive pass catcher with good size but an alarming lack of tenacity and fire when it’s time to run block. Ferguson saw adequate short-catch volume but was rarely asked to venture beyond the front yard as a route-runner. He has not shown enough technique or toughness to neutralize an NFL edge defender at the point of attack, but he can hit targets as a move blocker. Ferguson could improve in that area with additional coaching, but he might need to find the grit needed to compete against NFL tough guys as a run blocker to realize his full potential.

Final Thoughts

The Broncos signed veteran tight end Evan Engram in free agency but should still draft another pass-catching tight end in the draft. Oregon’s Terrance Ferguson makes a lot of sense for the Broncos due to his play style, fit in Sean Payton’s offense, and his history and chemistry with quarterback Bo Nix.

Engram is a 30+ year-old tight end coming off shoulder surgery. You need insurance behind him otherwise, the Broncos are back to having no receiving threat at tight end if he were to miss time. Ferguson would give them a developmental pass catcher who can come in and give the Broncos and Bo Nix yet another big athletic target in the passing game.

He did test really well at the Combine and benefited from many of the other top tight ends not working out. This likely raised his stock a little bit, but I still believe he is a late-day two-pick. If he is there in the third round and the Broncos have not yet drafted a tight end, I would strongly consider selecting him.

I’m not worried about his blocking. Listen, the Broncos already have their blocking tight ends and probably will add another at some point this offseason. They need more pass-catching threats at that position and Ferguson would give them that. He has some potential to improve in that area but even if he doesn’t, that’s not the end of the world. The ‘Joker’ position is not meant to block. They’re on the roster to be a mismatch and a pass-catching threat. I think he can be that and add depth behind Evan Engram.

Horse Tracks: NFL may try to entice even more kickoff returns in 2025

New England Patriots v Denver Broncos

The NFL is set to propose touchbacks on kickoffs coming out to the 35 yard line. Will that increase the kickoff return rate?

In the 2024 NFL season, the league saw a kickoff return rate of ~33% up from ~22% in 2023. This increase was due to the complicated changes in kickoff rules involving the all-important “landing zone” as well as some tweaks to where the ball was spotted.

It looks like this season the NFL is not content with what they saw in 2024. The competition committee will be looking at one more slight tweak to put the spot of a touchback at the 35-yard line instead of the 30.

The thinking here will incentivize more teams to kick returnable kicks into the landing zone instead of kicking so many touchbacks. On the flip side, more teams may also take a touchback for kicks going into the end zone instead of bringing them out. I honestly am all for a change that continues to help make the special teams game a core component of the game of football.

Future Broncos: LSU tight end Mason Taylor

LSU v Florida

Louisiana State University tight end Mason Taylor would be a great long-term solution at tight end for the Denver Broncos.

Coaches, scouts, and personnel from the National Football League are diligent every year scouting prospects. But when your father his Hall of Fame defensive end Jason Taylor and your uncle is Hall of Fame linebacker Zach Thomas, teams might pay a little bit more attention and have more interest finding a way to add them to their respective franchises.

Let’s just say football is in tight end Mason Taylor’s DNA. A prep star for the well-known St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Florida, Taylor was a three-star recruit and committed to Louisiana State after receiving scholarship offers from over two dozen programs.

It didn’t take long for him to earn a role with the Tigers as he earned became a starter immediately as a true freshman. After a so-so sophomore campaign in 2023, he kicked his play up a notch this past season. He etched his way into the school’s record books with 55 receptions and became the first LSU tight end to amass over 100 receptions and 1,000 yards over the course of a collegiate career.

While the Denver Broncos did sign Evan Engram to a two-year deal during free agency, finding a long-term answer to the position still is worthy of early draft consideration. After Tyler Warren and Colston Loveland, it’s anyone’s best guess who might be the third tight end off the board in the 2025 NFL Draft. In my opinion, Taylor certainly merits that consideration and is a strong candidate to be the next player picked at the position.

Let’s take a deeper look at the LSU prospect, his strengths and weaknesses, and why he would be a home run addition to the Broncos’ tight end group.

Player Profile: Mason Taylor — Tight End — LSU

Film Room & Highlights

Hart’s Scouting Report

Positives:

  • Has the desired size and frame for the position with good athleticism
  • Battles hard in traffic and is tough at the catch point
  • Possesses some of the best hands of any tight end in this year’s draft
  • Savvy movement skills with a penchant for taking advantage of soft zone coverages
  • Shows promise with respect to yard after catch ability
  • Knack for making the big play in crucial moments
  • Reliable and durable with no major injury concerns
  • Lauded by teammates and coaches for work ethic and football intelligence
  • Hall of Fame NFL bloodlines

Negatives:

  • Strength and blocking technique need improvement to withstand rigors of NFL
  • While he has the ability to attack all three levels of the field, a lot of his production came from short throws or routes underneath in the flats
  • Given the aforementioned, he will need time to learn an expanded route tree with more responsibility
  • Lacks hefty experience as an in-line tight end

Hart’s Projection: Top 50 Selection | Second Round Value

Mason Taylor is an every-down tight end that can immediately impact an NFL team.

He is a big bodied pass catcher who wins at all three levels, at the catch point, and had just a 1.8% drop rate in 2024. He can also run and pass block inline.

— NFL Draft Files (@NFL_DF) January 18, 2025

Why the Denver Broncos should consider drafting Taylor

Tyler Warren and Colston Loveland are widely regarded as the top two tight ends in this year’s class. As each day passes, it seems more and more likely Warren could be a Top 10 selection and Loveland could be off the board before the Broncos are scheduled to pick.

The battle for who becomes the third tight end off the board in this draft comes down to a few players. Without question, Taylor is one of them. He is my third-ranked tight end in this year’s class and someone I view as a legitimate number one tight end at the next level. Most everything he needs work on can develop in time with proper tutelage and coaching. His intangibles and traits you cannot teach certainly stick out amongst his peers at the position.

With the addition of Engram, the Broncos may wait a few rounds to address the tight end position in the draft. However, I firmly believe it shouldn’t preclude them from selecting a talented player in the first few rounds. Taylor would be a slam dunk selection for Denver in the second round.

That being said, if the Broncos want Taylor, I think they would have to move up and get him. It’s hard to imagine a scenario where a player of his caliber slips that far—especially when you consider how many teams could use an upgrade at the tight end position.

Mina Kimes on the Broncos: ‘They are a good football team’

NFL: Pro Bowl Skills Challenge

Kirby Lee-Imagn Images

The Denver Broncos are starting to bring along some believers in the mainstream. Mina Kimes is definitely on board.

What a difference a year makes. This time last year, no one thought the Denver Broncos roster was on the rise. They had an excellent 2024 NFL Draft, but it took a season for national media to become believers in Bo Nix. However, it wasn’t just the quarterback play that rose. Guys like Nik Bonitto and Marvin Mims Jr. also broke out, added with perennial stars like Patrick Surtain II winning Defensive Play of the Year.

It was a total reversal for a franchise that had been stuck near the bottom for so many seasons. The playoff berth was the icing on the 2024 cake.

Now, heading into another season, the narrative around the franchise has completely shifted nationally. Proof of that was clearly evident on Mine Kimes’ podcast where she broke down every team’s needs with Sam Monson. When she got to the Denver Broncos, the focus became down to two positions of need... and that was it.

“There were two or three teams where I thought ‘Wow, this is a really good roster’ and when I did this for (the Broncos) I didn’t notice how good and how deep they were at multiple positions,” Kimes said as she wrapped up the discussion on the Broncos. “They are a good football team.”

For those of us fans who have been here every day since Super Bowl 50, these offseason needs discussion centered around quarterback — but if we delved beyond that position there were always a laundry list of other needs. It’s amazing how quickly that has turned around.

Head Coach Sean Payton has done a hell of a job turning things around in just two season while navigating a terrible contract around Russell Wilson. It’s hard not to believe and buy into the program he is building now in Denver.

We are poised for a fun 2025 and I’m starting to love the national media again. Imagine that.

Future Broncos: Ole Miss wide receiver Tre Harris

Kentucky v Ole Miss

If the Denver Broncos are interested in adding a prototypical X receiver in the 2025 NFL Draft, Ole Miss standout Tre Harris is a prospect to consider.

One of the biggest questions surrounding the Denver Broncos as the 2025 NFL Draft approaches is how confident they are in their wide receiver corps. While I certainly wouldn’t classify it as a premier need for the franchise, I’m a believer that adding more talent to the position would be a good thing for them to do.

I’ve floated Emeka Egbuka as a first round fit for the Broncos. Now it’s time to start looking at some Day 2 and Day 3 options that could bolster their aerial attack. One player to keep your eye on as April approaches is Ole Miss standout Tre Harris.

After spending three years at Louisiana Tech, Harris transferred to Ole Miss for his last two years of eligibility and put up some eye-popping numbers. In just eight games in 2024, Harris had 60 catches for 1,030 yards and 7 touchdowns. His 128.8 yard per game average was the highest in college football and he was Jaxson Dart’s favorite target before a groin injury hampered the rest of his season.

So, what does Harris’ future potential in the National Football League look like? Let’s take a deeper look at his strengths, weaknesses, and when the Broncos should consider taking him this April.

Player Profile: Tre Harris — Wide Receiver — Ole Miss

Height: 6’2” | Weight: 205 pounds | Arm Length: 31-7/8” | Hand Size: 9-5/8”

40-yard dash: 4.54 seconds | 10-yard split: 1.56 seconds | Vertical: 38.5” | Broad Jump: 10’-5”

Statistics at Louisiana Tech / Ole Miss: 51 games, 220 receptions, 3,532 receiving yards, 29 touchdowns.

Film Room & Highlights

Hart’s Scouting Report

Positives:

  • Good size, frame, and wingspan for a ‘X’ receiver but can play multiple spots
  • Big play threat who averaged over 17 yards per reception the last two seasons
  • Long strider that gains steam vertically and can beat defenders deep
  • Physical at the catch point and also utilizes stiff arm to jolt away defenders
  • Nimble nature after the catch and can cause defenders to miss in the open field
  • Productive as a red zone target
  • Shows toughness and willingness as a run blocker

Negatives:

  • Knee (‘23) and Groin (‘24) injuries in back-to-back seasons is a concern
  • Will need some time to adjust to more responsibilities with a larger route tree in the pros
  • Occasionally struggles to separate when going up against physical corners in press man
  • Concentration lapses with a 7.7% drop rate the past two years with the Rebels

Hart’s Projection: Top 75 Selection | Mid-Day 2 selection

This is just textbook from Tre Harris, working in the slot against off-man, near the top of the screen.

Why the Denver Broncos should consider drafting Harris

If the Broncos are interested in adding battle-tested X receiver that has big play potential, Harris is one of the most intriguing options on Day 2 in this year’s draft. His flashes and peaks are high, and the tape shows a competitive player capable of working all three levels of the field. If he can stay healthy and improve his drop rate, I believe Harris will make a significant impact in the NFL.

With uncertainty regarding the future of Courtland Sutton, having a prospect in the mix who can primarily play outside would be a smart move long-term. Like most collegiate receivers making their way to the pros, it may take a year or two for Harris to hit his stride. Nevertheless, he has the skill set and demeanor to eventually become a high-volume option in any team’s passing attack.

Overall, I think Harris is a prospect the Broncos’ brass will be fairly high on. I see him as a mid-Day 2 prospect that will come off the board in the Top 75 selections. Though I wouldn’t be surprised a team in looking for physicality and playmaking on the perimeter took him in the Top 50.

How about you, Broncos Country? Let me know what you think about Harris in the comments section.

2025 NFL Draft Profile: Tennessee running back Dylan Sampson

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: NOV 16 Tennessee at Georgia

Photo by Jeffrey Vest/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

Sampson is an explosive back who may interest the Broncos on day two or three of the draft.

One prospect who may interest the Denver Broncos on day two or three of the 2025 NFL Draft is Tennessee running back Dylan Sampson. He is a 5’8”, 200-pound running back who is one of the more explosive backs in the entire draft. The Athletic’s draft analyst Dane Brugler has Sampson graded as his 80th overall prospect in the 2025 NFL Draft and ranks him as the seventh-best back in the entire draft.

Sampson played a total of three seasons at Tennessee and is coming off a breakout year for the Volunteers. During his three seasons with the team, he has totaled 422 carries for 2,492 yards, 5.9 yards per carry, and 35 rushing touchdowns while adding 40 receptions for 342 yards, and 1 touchdown. This past year, he totaled 258 carries for 1,491 yards, and 22 rushing touchdowns while adding 20 receptions for 143 yards.

Dylan Sampson is a touchdown machine.

He put up 22 TDs on 5.8 yards per carry in 2024, forcing 83 missed tackles with 929 yards after contact.

Film Room

Scouting Report

Strengths

  • Explosive athlete
  • Great long speed. dangerous in space, and consistently made defenders miss
  • Good contact balance and keeps his legs moving through contact
  • Flourished as a one-cut runner who used his jump cut to find open space and use his speed to gain big chunks of yards
  • Quick feet and agile
  • Showcased good vision
  • Despite his size, was effective between the tackles and had a nose for the end zone
  • Willing pass blocker

Weaknesses

  • Ball security concerns (had 4 fumbles last season)
  • Wasn’t used much in the passing game and wasn’t effective when used
  • While a willing pass blocker, he was slow to find the free blitzer and may not have the size to hold up consistently as a blocker in the NFL
  • Undersized back

What other analysts are saying about Tennessee running back Dylan Sampson

NFL.com’s draft analyst Lance Zierlein on RB Dylan Sampson

Compact back with good instincts and run-after-contact ability that propelled him to stardom in his lone season as a starter. Sampson separates himself from other backs in the class with an impressive feel for timing, spacing and blocking scheme. He sees lane development in real time and is disciplined to stay on the designed track, but he can flip a switch and improvise when traffic mounts. He can wiggle around tacklers or break free from their grasps. Ball security and pass protection improvement will be early priorities for his next coaching staff. Sampson plays with the instincts of a seasoned veteran and has the talent to build on what he started in 2024.

Final Thoughts

I like Dylan Sampson’s game overall but I just don’t see the fit with the Broncos.

Sampson is a talented and explosive one-cut runner who is coming off a very productive year for Tennessee. He proved he can run between the tackles and has the speed and vision to bounce it to the outside and use his speed to out run the defense. However, he wasn’t used much as a pass-catcher and when used, had some drops and does not have much of a route tree. As we know, Sean Payton loves to throw to his backs and I am simply not sure that Sampson can be that type of player.

On top of that, he has ball security issues and limitations as a pass blocker which make him a risky draft choice. The speed and running ability are great and make him an intriguing prospect, but he lacks the little things that Sean Payton looks for in a back.

With all that said, players can learn and grow and if Payton and the Broncos feel like they can mold him into the type of player they want, then that is a different story. For that, we will have to see, but I believe there are other backs who fit what Sean Payton wants better than Sampson.

NFL Draft Profile: Miami tight end Elijah Arroyo

Miami v Georgia Tech

Arroyo is a big and athletic tight end who could fill the ‘Joker’ role in Sean Payton’s offense moving forward

One prospect who may interest the Denver Broncos on day two of the 2025 NFL Draft is Miami tight end Elijah Arroyo. He is a 6’5”, 250-pound tight end who is considered one of the top tight ends in the entire draft. The Athletic’s lead draft analyst Dane Brugler has Arroyo graded as his 39th overall player in the 2025 NFL Draft while ranking him as the fourth-best tight end in the draft.

Arroyo played a total of four seasons at Miami and is coming off a breakout year for the Hurricanes. During his four-year career at Miami, Arroyo played in 36 games and totaled 46 receptions for 753 yards and 8 touchdowns. This past year, Arroyo played in 13 games and totaled 35 receptions for 590 yards and 7 touchdown receptions.

Scouting Report

Strengths

  • Ideal size and length you look for in a tight end
  • Very athletic and can stretch the seam
  • Has ‘Joker’ traits
  • Explosive in the open field and has the ability to create after the catch
  • Big target with a wide catch radius
  • Fluid athlete and has good body control
  • Has natural receiving ability
  • Strong reliable hands
  • Aligned all over the field at Miami
  • Willing and competent run blocker who gives you some in-line potential

Weaknesses

  • Had a knee injury that cost him a chunk of the 2022 and 2023 seasons so his medicals will be key
  • Only one year of production
  • Needs to become a more polished route runner
  • Blocking technique will need improvement if he wants to consistently play in-line

What other analysts are saying about Miami tight end Elijah Arroyo

NFL Network’s lead draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah on TE Elijah Arroyo

Arroyo is an athletic, seam-stretching tight end with ideal size/length. He moved around the formation in Miami’s offense, but he did most of his damage flexed out in the slot. He’s sudden in his release and he gains speed as he climbs down the field. He’s at his best when he’s attacking vertically or running away from defenders on crossers. He isn’t a nuanced/polished route runner, but he has a good feel to find space when his quarterback scrambles. He tracks the ball very well over the shoulder and has reliable hands. After the catch, he relies on his speed to pull away from pursuing defenders. He’s an effective shield/wall-off blocker in the run game. The medical-evaluation portion of the draft process will be important for him given his injury history. Overall, Arroyo is still developing as a complete route runner, but he can do a lot of damage on limited touches because of his speed.

NFL.com’s draft analyst Lance Zierlein on TE Elijah Arroyo

Arroyo enters the evaluation process with questions to answer after a knee injury took chunks of two seasons from him. He displayed a willingness as both a point-of-attack and move blocker, but his technique and play strength will need upgrading. He’s an average athlete who struggles to beat man coverage but appeared to get faster and more fluid as the 2024 season wore on. He plays with awareness in space and secures throws with sure hands in traffic. Arroyo is a move tight end whose medical and athletic testing need to check out to give him a legitimate shot at being a productive pro.

Final Thoughts

I get Jimmy Graham vibes when watching Elijah Arroyo. He is a big and athletic target who has the potential to be a weapon for Sean Payton and the Broncos.

Again, the Broncos did sign veteran Evan Engram in free agency to a two-year deal but he is a 30-year old tight end coming off shoulder surgery. Adding a tight end like Arroyo would give them depth and insurance if Engram were to miss time. He also would give them a legitimate receiving threat moving forward in the future. I have faith that Sean Payton would find a way to get both on the field at the same time and utilize them both in the passing game.

As for Arroyo’s injury concerns, the medicals will be key. He suffered a knee injury in 2022 and a setback kept him out for a portion of the 2023 season. However, he looked healthy this past season, had a breakout year, and did not look limited by the injury. So, if everything looks good, I am not holding that injury against him or labeling him as injury-prone.

If available, I would select Arroyo in the second round and continue to add to that tight end room. This would give Bo Nix another big and athletic weapon in the middle of the field who can also hold his own as a blocker. Of these “move tight ends” I believe Arroyo is one of the better run blockers of the bunch. With that said, he is far from polished there, but the ability, willingness, and potential is there.

Arroyo is one of my favorite prospects for the Broncos and one player I am hoping they draft in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Future Broncos: Maryland wide receiver Tai Felton

USC v Maryland

Maryland Terrapins standout Tai Felton is a potential Day 2 wide receiver candidate for the Denver Broncos.

The Denver Broncos have the opportunity to add to their wide receiver corps if they so choose in the 2025 NFL Draft. Perhaps they feel comfortable with the talent they have, but I a feeling they will use a selection to upgrade the position at some point in time.

According to Luca Evans of The Denver Post, the Broncos recently conducted a Zoom meeting with Maryland wide receiver Tai Felton. The focal point of the Terrapins’ passing attack this past season, Felton had a breakout senior campaign in 2024 with 96 catches for 1,124 yards and 9 touchdowns. With his uptick in production and top-notch workouts on the pre-draft circuit, scouts have taken notice, and his draft stock appears to be on the rise as April approaches.

Given the Broncos’ reported interest, I thought it would be apt to add him to our draft profile list. So, what does his future potential in the National Football League look like? Let’s take a deeper look at his strengths, weaknesses, and when the Broncos should consider taking him this April.

Player Profile: Tai Felton — Wide Receiver — Maryland

Height: 6’1” | Weight: 183 pounds | Arm Length: 30” | Hand Size: 9”

40-yard dash: 4.37 seconds | 10-yard split: 1.51 seconds | Vertical: 39.5” | Broad Jump: 10’-10”

Statistics at Maryland: 46 games, 172 catches, 2,207 yards, 17 touchdowns.

Film Room & Highlights

Hart’s Scouting Report

Positives:

  • Improved each season and had a standout senior campaign as the Terrapins’ top target
  • Viable screen and swing option that racks up quality yardage after the catch
  • Good at working slants over the middle of the field generating first downs
  • Elite workout numbers from NFL Combine with a 9.6 Relative Athletic Score
  • Has the ability to beat defenders deep thanks to his 4.37 speed
  • Does well adjusting to downfield throws

Negatives:

  • Needs to add weight and strength to his frame
  • Lacks physicality and grit as a run blocker
  • Often outmatched in contested catch situations
  • May struggle going up against physical corners and man and press coverage in the NFL

Why the Denver Broncos should consider drafting Felton

Adding more playmakers to the roster would be beneficial for the Bo Nix and the potential of the Broncos’ offense in 2025. I have a feeling a receiver will be added, but I’m just not sure how high of a selection will be utilized. That’ll be up to Head Coach Sean Payton and General Manager George Paton and how their draft board is ultimately prioritized and finalized.

Felton is an ascending prospect who improved each season in college. His senior campaign showed he was capable of receiving a lot more volume which bodes well for him on his journey to the NFL. In my opinion, he profiles as a Z receiver at the next level who can be set in motion and is at his best creating yards after the catch. His route running developed more this past season and he proved to be a consistent threat on concepts over the middle of the field.

On top of that, his sub-4.4-speed is an elite trait calling card few in this class possess. There may be some overlap in utilization with Marvin Mims Jr., but he certainly would provide competition for Troy Franklin who struggled with consistency and deep ball tracking as a rookie. Overall, I think Felton will be drafted in the Top 100 and find a home somewhere in the third round. If he is on the board when the Broncos are picking then, he is definitely a prospect they should consider.

Remembering Abner Haynes’ impact on pro football, America in the 1960s

1960-Dallas Texans vs Los Angeles Chargers at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum - AFL American Football League

Photo by Bob D’Olivo/The Enthusiast Network via Getty Images/Getty Images

For a short time after leading an AFL boycott over racist treatment of Black players, Abner Haynes was picked up by the Broncos. Haynes died in July 2024 and his son King David has written a new book about his dad. I interviewed King David last month to talk about the book and his dad.

In a few weeks, the Denver Broncos are going to select a rookie running back as it is one of the biggest needs of the offense. Whether it’s the first round or last round is anyone’s guess, so we’ll leave it at that.

But we are going to talk about one of history’s best pro running backs, who was briefly a Bronco.

Abner Haynes.

Happy 8⃣5⃣th Birthday, no. 2⃣8⃣ Abner Haynes! Haynes was a Denver Bronco RB and returner in 1965 and 1966. Haynes was one of the best players in AFL history. As a Bronco, he scored 9 total TDs—5 rushing, 3 receiving, and 1 punt return, as well as amassed 3,702 all-purpose yards! pic.twitter.com/I6QR9hbUKP

— Mile High Moments (@MileHighMoments) September 19, 2022

A native of North Texas, Haynes came out of the high school football mecca that is Texas football. Playing for an all-Black Lincoln High School, Haynes and Leon King broke the color barrier at what was then North Texas State University (now University of North Texas at Denton).

As a starting running back in 1958 and 1959, Haynes led North Texas to a 16-4-1 record while rushing for 1,864 career yards and 25 touchdowns. Drafted to the AFL’s Dallas Texans in 1960, Haynes easily earned Rookie of the Year honors as he led league in rushing with 875 yards and averaged 15.4 yards in punt returns.

Haynes would go on to set AFL records for TDs in a game (5), TDs in a season (19) and career TDs (46). He played pro football for eight years — three with the Texans and another one with the Chiefs (when Lamar Hunt moved the team to Kansas City), two with the Broncos and another shared season between the Dolphins and Jets.

Haynes accumulated 4,630 career rushing yards and 12,065 combined total yards in his career — a career that is memorialized in the North Texas Athletic Hall of Fame (1986) and the Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Fame (1991).

RIP Abner Haynes

1965 AFL All-Star Game Players' Boycott

The game was moved from New Orleans to Houston — mid-week — the result of a players' boycott stemming from incidents of racial discrimination against Black players.

Haynes was one of the leaders. pic.twitter.com/dQjn1pyhtV

— Kevin Gallagher (@KevG163) July 18, 2024

But it was his role in an African American player boycott of the AFL All Star Game in 1965 in New Orleans that Haynes earned his reputation as a real leader among men at the time.

In 2020, Jess Place and I spoke to Haynes about his efforts, and he explained why he made that bold move:

“When it was my time to get my [hotel] room, the woman said to me, ‘Where are you monkeys from?’ I said, ‘What did you say? She said, ‘Where you monkeys from?’ I was through with it. I just walked away because I wasn’t going to get caught up in that kind of bull,” Haynes told us. “I stepped out of line and she called the next guy a monkey. We decided then and there we needed to have a meeting because I’m not going to put up with this all week.”

Within an hour, Haynes and others had organized a meeting of more than 20 players - both Black and white and from different teams. With the support of white AFL stars such as Buffalo quarterback Jack Kemp and San Diego offensive tackle Ron Mix, Haynes and the players told AFL commissioner Joe Foss that they would not play in New Orleans, and the game was moved to Houston.

“I was never so proud of my teammates who stood up for us and made it known ‘if they aren’t going to treat Abner better than that, we’re not going to play,’” Haynes said.

Now Haynes’ son, King David, has written a book about his father’s life — from humble beginnings as a preacher’s son in segregated Texas to a football star who inadvertently helped the country address its racism as Haynes made his way through high school, college and professional ranks in football.

Abner Haynes died last July, and his son has memorialized many of his stories — both football and family — in a new book, “Abner Haynes: An American Hero.”

I spoke to King David about the book, some more early stories of his father’s life and of course more about the 1965 boycott.

One thing that was clear is that Abner Haynes never thought he did any of his accomplishments on his own. Whether it was his own father (known as “Papa Dad”) standing up to the KKK or his aunt feeding him all through college while he wasn’t allowed to eat on campus as a Black man or a coach and athletic director who made sure he could play or teammates at every level who just wanted to win and could not have cared less about his skin color, Abner Haynes was always grateful for his experience.

“My dad was always observant of how far we have come, you know,” King David said, noting that he didn’t during segregation but he certainly experienced the lack of integration Texas and the South were known for throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s. “But my dad was always looking at the positive, you know, because all the way through there were people who were further along in their thinking and they helped my dad.”

When Jess and I first spoke to Abner and his son King David five years ago, we of course compared the 60s to the protesting in 2020. I mentioned in the recent interview that some things still hadn’t changed, and King David noted that change takes time and finding allies in the moment is the key.

“In our lifetimes, it feels slow, but in the grand scheme of things, we’ve changed a lot. We’ve changed so much from the 50s and the 60s,” he said, adding that he’s often proud of the country and certainly proud of all the people he met through his dad’s pro football days that have helped move the country’s thinking to more of an equality mindset. “I’ve known many people through my dad, who were ahead of their peers and and who thought about fairness and giving everyone an equal shot at life, you know people who didn’t think that giving me a fair chance would somehow lessen their life, you know?”

I hope you take some time to listen to or watch the interview and definitely check out the book. You can get it on Amazon or through Barnes & Noble, and if you really want a treat, get the audio book and listen to King David himself narrate it. He’s got a preacher’s voice so you won’t be disappointed!

Report: Broncos sign QB Sam Ehlinger to a one-year deal

Indianapolis Colts v New York Giants

The Broncos sign the former Texas quarterback will serve as the Broncos third quarterback.

According to 9NEWS Denver's Mike Klis, the Denver Broncos have signed former Indianapolis Colts quarterback Sam Ehlinger to a one-year deal.

Source confirms Broncos have reached 1-yr agreement with veteran backup QB Sam Ehlinger. Former Texas QB was 0-3 with 3 TDs, 3 INTs as Colts QB in 2022. 1st by @Schultz_Report.

— MikeKlis9NEWS (@mikeklis9news) March 31, 2025

The team signed veteran Jarrett Stidham to serve as Bo Nix's backup and now have signed Ehlinger to serve as their third-string quarterback. Zach Wilson served as the Broncos third quarterback last season but he signed with the Miami Dolphins this offseason to serve as their backup quarterback.

He was a sixth round pick for the Colts back in 2021 and was in their roster through the 2024 season. He appeared in 8 games for the Colts throughout his career including 3 starts and has totaled 573 yards, 3 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.

The Broncos have been doing their due diligence on quarterbacks throughout the draft process so we'll see if they're done adding to their quarterback room. If they do, it'll be a late round pick or an undrafted free agent.

With the draft process nearing its end and the 2025 NFL Draft less than a month away, it’s a good time to take a look at which prospects and positions the Denver Broncos have been showing interest in this offseason. I have been collecting all the reported meetings and interviews the Broncos have had throughout the All-Star games, Scouting Combine, and the Pro Days. We also have a number of reported pre-draft visits which will continue through the month of April.

Obviously, we do not have ALL the reported meetings, interviews, workouts, and all that, as many of these go unreported or are kept a secret. So, keep that in mind when looking for your favorite prospects in this list. I would pay attention to what positions they’re showing interest in, as well as the type of player and if they have had multiple meetings with these prospects.

With all that said, here is the 2025 Denver Broncos draft interest tracker. This list will continue to be updated throughout the month of April as more and more information becomes available.

Broncos GM George Paton: “We’ll get a back in this draft”

The Broncos general manager told reporters on Monday that it’s a strong running back class and that they will get a back in this draft.

The Broncos' owners, executives, general manager, and head coach all traveled down to Palm Beach, Florida, for the annual league meetings. During these meetings, general manager George Paton met with the media and had some interesting things to say about their plan for running back during the draft.

Paton told reporters that it’s a strong running back class that features different flavors throughout the draft. He continued by saying you can get a good back in the second round up all the way to the sixth round, and finished by saying “We’ll get a running back in this draft”.

“It’s a strong class. There are different flavors throughout the draft. I think you can get a good back in the second round up and all the way to the sixth round. That’s how it is. There’s just so many of them. The first and second down power back, you have the change of pace, you have the third down and you have the three down. [There are] not as many three-down backs, but it’s a good class. We’ll get a [running] back in this draft.”

None of this is really breaking news but the Broncos' general manager coming out and confirming it all is noteworthy. The team saw former second-round pick Javonte Williams leave in free agency and sign with the Cowboys and they have not added to their running back room as of yet. That leaves Jaleel McLaughlin, Audric Estime, Tyler Badie, and Blake Watson as the only backs on the Broncos roster currently. None of the four have really proven they can be a starting running back in the NFL, so the Broncos are expected to draft at least one back sometime in the first two rounds of the draft.

Paton saying you can find a back anywhere from the second to sixth round of the draft was also noteworthy. Does that mean they’re not considering a back in the first round? Was it just a vague comment or was Paton being calculated with what he was saying to throw teams off from their plans? Hard to say after they fooled many into thinking J.J. McCarthy was their guy when Sean Payton was all-in on Bo Nix. It’s lying season so it’s hard to say right now.

With that said, what Paton said was indeed accurate. You can find good and talented backs anywhere in the draft. Alvin Kamra was a third-round selection by Payton with the Saints, and he turned out alright. This is a loaded draft class with many different flavors of backs in this draft, so they will have plenty of opportunities to add to their running back room.

Some backs the Broncos may consider in the early rounds of the draft include UNC’s Omarion Hampton, Ohio State’s TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins, Iowa’s Kaleb Johnson, and Kansas State’s D.J. Giddens. Some other backs they may consider in the mid to late rounds are Arizona State’s Cam Skattebo, Kansas’s Devin Neal, Tennessee’s Dylan Sampson, SMU’s Brashard Smith, Syracuse’s LeQuint Allen, and many others in this talented and deep running back class.

We have known that the Broncos will draft a running back. However, the question is when and which running back(s) will they select in the 2025 NFL Draft?

Broncos brass sets focus toward 2025 NFL Draft

NFL: Denver Broncos Head Coach Sean Payton Introductory Press Conference

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

After a successful free agency period that addressed key needs, Head Coach Sean Payton and General Manager George Paton have their sights on upgrading their roster via the 2025 NFL Draft.

In the midst of the NFL Owners Meetings that kicked off yesterday, General Manager George Paton and Head Coach Sean Payton reflected on their endeavors to date and pontificated about the future.

Both were pleased with the results of their successful free agency period with key additions that bolstered both sides of the ball. They believe the roster at this point in time compared to last season is demonstrably better. Moreover, both are relieved that finding a franchise quarterback is no longer on their to-do list.

“I would say we felt good coming out of it. We felt like our team got better from a football makeup standpoint and toughness. We will continue to use that momentum as we get closer to the draft and then even after the draft,” remarked Payton.

Instead of the Broncos being rated as one of the worst teams in the National Football League, a lot of analysts have given them praise for what they’ve accomplished to date. All things considered; the Broncos certainly are in a much better position now as the 2025 NFL Draft approaches. Even so, both Paton and Payton know their efforts to improve the team this offseason isn’t over.

“You want to be drafting good football players where you’re sitting. … We do feel like we’re in a good position."

“When you’re sitting in my chair, you’re always trying to build every day. Even when the draft’s over, it’s like, ‘UFL, what’s going on there?’ Listen… [OLB] Dondrea Tillman. So, it just never ends, and it never ends with the scouts. You’re always building. You can never get complacent in this job or you’re going to get passed up,” stated Paton.

With the draft just a few weeks away, the Broncos’ brass is laser-focused on strategizing and finalizing their board. Paton noted that they will begin their draft meetings starting on Wednesday which will extend into later next week. That will be followed up with what he classified as ‘group studies’ — likely a deep dive of scenarios and discussions on how scouts and personnel view prospects available in this year’s class.

The draft process is exhaustive with a seemingly endless number of variables and tiny moving parts. Though in one respect, Broncos Country could deduce one absolute that will transpire in a few short weeks. And what would that be? Picking a running back in this year’s loaded class which Paton confirmed yesterday.

“It’s a strong class. There are different flavors throughout the draft. I think you can get a good back in the second round up and all the way to the sixth round. That’s how it is. There’s just so many of them,” stated Paton.

“The first and second down power back, you have the change of pace, you have the third down and you have the three down. [There are] not as many three-down backs, but it’s a good class. We’ll get a [running] back in this draft.”

Paton acknowledging the depth of this year’s class shouldn’t be a surprise. After all, he’s leading the charge with his robust staff of scouts searching every nook and cranny to find the best players to improve the Broncos aspirations for in 2025. However, citing this may lead some to reconfigure what they believe the team will do with their first pick in April’s draft. It’s arguably the biggest need on the roster, but that doesn’t necessarily mean Denver has to use a first-round selection to address it.

Outside of the running back tidbit, Paton acknowledged that the Broncos have the flexibility to move up or down the draft board thanks to how they feel about their roster. Though he casually joked he wouldn’t start bugging Payton about wanting to trade back and acquire more picks until the day of the draft.

Additionally, both wouldn’t rule out adding to the team’s strengths—the offensive and defensive lines—sometime in April either. They have certainly done their homework on trench players and in my opinion, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Top 125 selections to fortify those groups. And that elusive ‘Joker’? Both he and Payton believe they have one in Evan Engram, but that won’t preclude them from adding another mismatch weapon on offense via the draft.

“I don’t think the search is ever over. I do think we have a ‘Joker,’ we have a mismatch tight end that we really like. But again, we’re always looking for the best players,” added Paton.

Who the best players are and who the Broncos will pick are yet to be determined. That will be an ongoing process until they are officially on the clock in just over three weeks' time. While Paton nor Payton gave any hints on particular players of interest [and that’s to be expected], Payton did remark that toughness was an important trait for prospects to have.

“Well, it’s up there. It’s up there with football IQ. It’s an extremely physical game, and at some point, there’s a team that takes it more than they give it each week. So, it’s important to have not only physically tough, but mentally tough-minded players.”

For the first time in a handful of seasons, the Broncos will have the luxury of navigating this year’s draft with a pick in the first four rounds. With little significant holes on the roster, the Broncos certainly could be aggressive when the rubber meets the road in 23 days. How it all plays out remains to be seen.

But know this—the Broncos’ brass is ready to rise to the occasion and is diligently preparing for anything that comes their way—and Paton and the staff are looking forward to putting the final touches to round out their roster for their 2025 season.

“Now as we head into the draft, we’re picking a little further back. We’re picking [at No.] 20. Who’s going to be there? Do we have to move up? Maybe we move back? All those scenarios come into play. The challenges are always ahead, no matter what.”

Future Broncos: Ohio State defensive tackle Tyleik Williams

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: JAN 20 CFP National Championship - Notre Dame vs Ohio State

Ohio State defensive tackle Tyleik Williams is a Day 2 prospect the Denver Broncos should consider if they want to continue adding to their defensive line.

The Denver Broncos improved demonstrably on the defensive side of the ball in 2024. Defensive Coordinator Vance Joseph did a tremendous job with the changes he made. Moreover, the additions of Malcom Roach and John Franklin-Myers in the trenches helped transform the Broncos’ defense to one of the National Football League’s best units.

Head Coach Sean Payton and General Manager George Paton have noted several times over the course of the offseason that building upon their strengths in the trenches is a possibility in the 2025 NFL Draft. Considering several key contributors on the defensive line are up for extensions at the end of next season, that seems like a smart plan of attack.

One prospect on Day 2 that I like is Ohio State defensive tackle Tyleik Williams. He played four years with the Buckeyes (two as a starter) and was a key cog in their National Championship campaign this past season. In his senior year, he amassed 46 tackles, 8 of them for loss, and 2.5 sacks.

A physically imposing force at 6’3” and 334 pounds, Williams’ is best known for his supreme run defense and ability to open up opportunities for his teammates. Let’s take a deeper look at Williams, his strengths and weaknesses, and why and when the Broncos should consider adding him in April.

Player Profile: Tyleik Williams — Defensive Tackle — Ohio State

Height: 6’3” | Weight: 334 pounds | Arm Length: 32” | Hand Size: 10-1/4”

Athletic Testing Scores: Only participated in drills at NFL Combine, fell down at Ohio State’s Pro Day during 40-yard dash and did not resume drills — No RAS available

Statistics at Ohio State: 51 games, 136 tackles, 28 tackles for loss, 11.5 sacks, 1 fumble recovery, 1 forced fumble.

Film Room & Highlights

Hart’s Scouting Report

Positives:

  • Imposing physique and heavy-handed defender with impeccable strength at point of attack
  • One of the draft’s best run defenders with a knack for disrupting plays in the backfield
  • Impressive athlete for his size and has a quick first step off the line of scrimmage
  • Moves surprisingly well laterally for on runs moving to the outside
  • Handled the ‘dirty work’ for the Buckeyes’ defense that opened up opportunities for his teammates
  • Ability to play multiple positions along the Broncos’ defensive front

Negatives:

  • Inconsistent technique and pad level causes some issues with leverage and maintaining ground versus interior offensive lineman
  • Occasionally gets worn down on long drives and might only be a two-down defender early on in his NFL career
  • Arm length is only average for the position
  • Needs refinement and work with pass rush moves

Hart’s Projection: Top 50 Selection | Second Round Value

Why the Denver Broncos should consider drafting Williams

The Broncos have a fearsome foursome with D.J. Jones, Zach Allen, and the aforementioned Franklin-Myers and Roach manning down their defensive front. While they do have some developmental players behind them, none have the impact potential Williams offers as the next level.

Williams’ athletic testing numbers weren’t concretely registered at either the NFL Combine or his Pro Day. However, his tape shows a disruptive force player at the point of attack who can take over drives and make a significant impact in games. He would be a formidable addition to the Broncos’ defense and give them a quality five-deep rotation on in their trenches.

Allen, Franklin-Myers, and Roach are all free agents at the end of the 2025 season. That’s why the Broncos adding another defensive lineman in this year’s draft is an absolute must. With D.J. Jones being rewarded with a three-year extension, it’s quite possible the team prefers to find a prospect that would be better suited to line up at end in Joseph’s defense.

Nevertheless, if the Broncos want to continue to improve in their run defense Williams would be a great selection. His size would also help free up his teammates and Denver’s quality group of edge rush players. I have Williams graded out as a second-round prospect and believe he would be a quality selection if available on Day 2 when the Broncos are picking.
