News Broncos Team Notes

Ex-Broncos pass rusher signs with UFL team

The Birmingham Stallions continue stacking talent ahead of the 2025 UFL season. The three-time defending champions of spring football signed former NFL pass rusher Ronnie Perkins earlier this month, per the league.

Perkins (6-3, 253 pounds) spent the first three years of his career with the New England Patriots before joining the Denver Broncos in 2023. Denver initially signed Perkins off New England’s practice squad before later releasing him and re-signing him to their own practice squad.

Perkins dressed for seven games in 2023, totaling 13 tackles and one quarterback hit on 149 snaps. He was placed on the team’s waived/injured list last August and reverted to injured reserve after clearing waivers. One month later, the Broncos released Perkins from IR with an injury settlement.

Perkins later landed on the practice squad of the Arizona Cardinals, but he was cut before the end of the season. The 25-year-old pass rusher will now get a chance to continue his pro football career in the UFL.

3 Broncos players named possible cap casualties

The Denver Broncos have a healthy salary cap situation ahead of NFL free agency, but teams are always looking to create more cap flexibility.

With free agency on deck next month, Nick Korte of OverTheCap.com has published a list of 100 players who could be candidates to become cap casualties this spring. The list includes three Broncos players, all on defense.

First up is linebacker Alex Singleton, who is coming off a torn ACL and set to turn 32 next season. None of Singleton’s salary is guaranteed in 2025, so Denver could save $5.58 million if he’s released.

Next on the list is defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers, but a contract restructure certainly seems more likely than a release for JFM. The 28-year-old defensive lineman has a base salary of $7.39 million this year, but only $1 million is guaranteed. The Broncos would save $7 million if he’s released.

The third and final player on the list is safety P.J. Locke. He is due $4.19 million in 2025, but none of it is guaranteed. After underwhelming as a starter last season, Locke’s spot in the starting lineup is certainly in jeopardy, and OTC seems to think is roster spot could be as well.

The NFL’s free agency negotiating window will open on March 10, followed by the official start of NFL free agency on March 12.

Broncos QB Bo Nix went viral on social media after hospital visit

Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix visited a local hospital on Wednesday and he went viral on social media after a parent posted a photo of NFL player making a surprise visit.

“Why did I just wake up to Bo Nix talking to my son in this hospital,” the father wrote on his Twitter/X page with a photo of Nix at his son’s hospital bed.

The tweet is approaching three million views:

— dookie (@babadoookie) February 19, 2025

The father and son also posed for a picture with Nix together:

“doctor told me my son was going to die when he was 2 weeks old unless he got a heart transplant we’ve been taking him to the hospital every week since then for treatment,” the father wrote in a follow-up tweet.

The son, Santana, was at the hospital for his weekly appointment when Nix made a surprise visit.

Nix was named a Pro Bowl alternate following his rookie season after surpassing 4,200 yards and scoring 34 touchdowns.

Reuniting with Bo Nix would be a 'dream come true' for Tez Johnson

The Nix family took Tez Johnson into their home when he was 15 years old and while he was not legally adopted, Johnson now considers Bo Nix to be his brother.

After playing high school football with Nix at Pinson Valley, Johnson later reunited with his brother at Oregon ahead of the 2023 season. They connected 86 times for 1,182 yards and 10 touchdowns last season before Nix entered the NFL draft.

Now, approaching one year after the Denver Broncos picked Nix, Johnson is entering the NFL draft this spring. Speaking at the Senior Bowl last month, the receiver was asked about the possibility of landing in Denver.

“Playing alongside my brother again would be very, very … I mean, that’s another dream come true,” Johnson said, via Alec Elijah of the Sidelines Sports Network. “If you can play in the NFL with your brother, that’s pretty amazing.”

Tez Johnson addressed some of the weight/muscle comments in the media at today’s Senior Bowl Media Day. I also got to ask about the possibility of playing with former Oregon QB Bo Nix and the Denver Broncos, who Tez calls his brother. pic.twitter.com/BgVY2GwzPW

— Alec Elijah (@CFBAlecElijah) January 30, 2025

Johnson (5-9, 156 pounds) is probably a late-round prospect due to his size, but it would be quite a story if he got a chance to reunite with Nix in Denver.

The 2025 NFL draft will be held in Green Bay from April 24-26 and the Broncos holds seven picks, including three sixth-round selections.

Broncos' leaders in tackles last season includes some team history

In 2023, Denver Broncos inside linebacker Alex Singleton led the team with 177 tackles. Three years ago, Singleton totaled 163 tackles.

Nobody on Denver’s defense came close to those totals in 2024. The Broncos only had two players above 100 tackles this year — safety Brandon Jones and linebacker Cody Barton.

Jones became the team’s first safety since Brian Dawkins (2009) to top 100 tackles in a single season. That’s right, Justin Simmons came close in 2018 (97), 2020 (96) and 2019 (93), but he never hit 100 tackles.

Broncos leaders in tackles 2024

  1. DB Brandon Jones: 115 tackles
  2. LB Cody Barton: 106 tackles
  3. CB Riley Moss: 86 tackles
  4. CB Ja’Quan McMillian: 81 tackles
  5. DB P.J. Locke: 74 tackles
  6. LB Justin Strnad: 73 tackles
  7. DL Zach Allen: 61 tackles
  8. OLB Jonathon Cooper: 58 tackles
  9. OLB Nik Bonitto: 48 tackles
  10. CB Pat Surtain: Pat Surtain: 45 tackles
  11. DL Malcolm Roach: 43 tackles
  12. DL D.J. Jones: 42 tackles

Barton and Strnad are both scheduled to become free agents in March, so it’s possible that Denver might have to replace its top two linebackers (in terms of tackles) this spring.

Broncos PFF grades: Best, worst defenders from 2024 season

The Denver Broncos went 10-7 in 2024 and reached the NFL playoffs for the first time since 2015. The team’s defense played a big role in that success, ranking eighth in takeaways (25), seventh in yards allowed (317.1 PG), third in points allowed (18.3 PG) and first in sacks (63).

So, who were the team’s best (and worst) defenders during the 2024 campaign? Here are the top (and bottom) defensive grades from Pro Football Focus, with a minimum of 125 snaps.

Best Defensive Players

  • DB Brandon Jones: 84.8
  • CB Pat Surtain: 83.8
  • OLB Nik Bonitto: 78.7
  • DL John Franklin-Myers: 78.3
  • OLB Dondrea Tillman: 69.1
  • OLB Jonathon Cooper: 68.8
  • DL D.J. Jones: 67.3
  • DL Zach Allen: 64.9
  • LB Cody Barton: 63.7

Maybe Brandon Jones should have been the Defensive Player of the Year? It’s certainly an upset that Pat Surtain did not end up No. 1 on the list. Zach Allen not being higher on the list is also a surprise.

Worst Defensive Players

  • DL Jordan Jackson: 41.3
  • LB Justin Strnad: 49.9
  • DB P.J. Locke: 51.2
  • OLB Jonah Elliss: 54.6
  • CB Riley Moss: 57.8
  • DL Malcolm Roach: 60.4
  • CB Ja’Quan McMillian: 61.5
  • DL Devon Key: 63.1

The grade for Riley Moss seems extremely harsh after his breakout season. P.J. Locke, on the other hand, might be in danger of losing his starting job after underwhelming last fall.

To view more grades from 2024, visit the paid version of PFF’ website.

Broncos' linebacker coach arrested, accused of assaulting police officer

Denver Broncos linebackers coach Michael Wilhoite was arrested on Sunday “on suspicion of second degree assault of a police officer,” according to a report from KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

Wilhoite, 38, was booked in Denver’s downtown jail and he has a court date set for Monday. In a statement released to 9News and other outlets, the Broncos said they are aware of a situation and are “in the process of gathering more information.”

Citing a a probable cause statement, Klis reported that Wilhoite left a car unattended at the Denver International Airport. When he returned and an officer told him he could not leave a vehicle unattended. Wilhoite allegedly told the officer to “shut the (expletive) up,” and things escalated from there.

From the Klis story:

Wilhoite then approached the officer and bumped his chest into the officer, causing the officer to step back, the statement says. The officer shoved Wilhoite back and then Wilhoite punched the officer, causing the officer to fall to the ground, according to the statement.

As Wilhoite got into his car, the officer used his taser, according to police. After the cycle ended, Wilhoite closed the door and drove away, the statement says.

Wilhoite started his football career in the original United Football League with the Omaha Nighthawks in 2011. He joined the San Francisco 49ers later that year and went on to spend six seasons with the Niners.

Wilhoite played linebacker and special teams in the NFL. His final year as a player came with the Seattle Seahawks in 2017. Wilhoite then transitioned to coaching as a special teams assistant with the New Orleans Saints in 2019 when Sean Payton served as their head coach.

Wilhoite left the Saints for a linebackers coach job with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2021 and he reunited with Payton with the Broncos in 2023.

One free agent each NFL team should want to sign in 2025

We’re less than a month away from the start of NFL free agency, which begins at 4 p.m. ET on March 12. But the legal tampering window opens two days before that on March 10 at 12 p.m. ET, where teams will be able to negotiate with free agents before the official start of the new league year.

The 2025 salary cap hasn’t been set yet, but it will land between $277.5 and $281.5 million, according to NFL.com. A number of NFL teams have some work to do over the next month when it comes to building their 2025 rosters.

Our NFL Wire editors identified one pending free agent (at the time of publication) that each team should sign to help improve their roster. And it seems like guard Trey Lance and edge rusher Josh Sweat will be in high demand.

Broncos select LB and WR in 2-round NFL mock draft

In a two-round NFL mock draft for Draft Wire, Curt Popejoy has the Denver Broncos adding a linebacker and wide receiver with their first two picks.

In the first round, the Broncos select Georgia linebacker Jalon Walker at No. 20. Walker (6-2, 245 pounds) won the Butkus Award last fall as college football’s best linebacker. He earned first-team All-American recognition after totaling 60 tackles, 6.5 sacks, two pass breakups and two fumble recoveries in 14 games.

With their second pick in the mock, Denver selects Miami wide receiver Xavier Restrepo at No. 51. Restrepo (5-10, 198 pounds) was named a consensus All-American in 2024 after hauling in 69 receptions for 1,127 yards and 11 touchdowns in 12 games.

Linebacker and receiver are among the team’s top needs this spring.

Of note, Popejoy has Penn State tight end Tyler Warren going off the board at pick No. 14 to the Indianapolis Colts and running back Ashton Jeanty going to the Chicago Bears at pick No. 10.

Michigan tight end Colston Loveland, who has been a popular pick for Denver in mock drafts, goes to the Los Angeles Chargers at No. 22.

What players do you not want the Denver Broncos to sign in free agency?

Kansas City Chiefs v Pittsburgh Steelers

Our Mile High Report NFL Free Agency Roundtables continue. Today’s theme is about players the staff doesn’t want the Denver Broncos to sign.

Installments one and two of our NFL Free Agent Roundtable are in the books.

So far, we have discussed whether or not the Denver Broncos should be measured or aggressive in free agency. Based on the poll results, measured had the slight lead, but readers across Broncos Country were fond of Ian St. Clair’s idea of “measured aggressiveness” which was only a few votes behind.

Additionally, our staff’s favorite players they’d love to see the team sign. Linebacker Nick Bolton was in popular demand, center Drew Dalman was given praise, and a few safeties also made the list. But now we are onto the next one!

Today, I asked the staff to give their thoughts on players (or certain position groups) they want to see the Denver Broncos avoid spending once free agency begins.

Most staff say pass on Najee Harris, Javonte Williams, or running backs

One of the most common thoughts amongst our staff was the desire to avoid spending on running back in free agency. This year’s draft class is loaded at the position and it’s quite clear that is where most believe the Broncos should find their next back.

Ross Allen

Najee Harris. He’s a good running back and would be an improvement, but I’d much rather the Broncos draft a couple of backs this year and save the free agency money for other guys. I don’t think Harris would be better than most guys you’d be able to draft on day one or two.

Taylor Kothe

Javonte Williams. It’s unlikely anyway, and I personally think George Paton mentioned the possibility of bringing Williams back for PR reasons. But I think that’s a door that needs to be firmly shut. I sincerely wish Pookie the best with another team, but the last thing the Broncos should do is repeat the 2024 season at running back.

Mike DeCicco

Any free agent running back, and that includes Javonte Williams. Any big-ticket players are no-no’s too.

Joe Mahoney

No running backs.

Though some staffers disagreed with that idea

One thinks Harris would be a good addition, while another (myself) believes another free agent running back would be a great addition.

Tim Lynch

I mean, that list is too long for me. I would like to disagree with Ross and the others above on this one. I think Najee Harris could be a solid pickup. He ran behind a woeful offensive line in Pittsburgh and pairing him with the second-best rushing offensive line last season could be an interesting play.

Christopher Hart

I would pass on Najee Harris. However, I wouldn’t be against the Broncos going after Aaron Jones on a short-term deal. Some might wonder why. Denver needs a back who excels as a receiver out of the backfield. That’s one of Jones’ strengths and he would be infinitely better in that regard than any back Denver had on the roster last season.

If the Broncos embark on a complete revamp of their room and opt for a new 1-2 punch at the position, there will be plenty of snaps to go around. Moreover, such a move wouldn’t preclude them from drafting one of the best backs in this year’s class. With that in mind, I’m not entirely against a running back in free agency.

It’d hard to pinpoint another particular player, but I don’t feel the Broncos should be spending super large amounts of money on a starting safety opposite of Brandon Jones. Do they need an upgrade over P.J. Locke? Sure. But some of the top guys in this free agency pool are projected at $14 million or more a year. No thanks on that.

No specific players to avoid as some staff vows to ‘trust the process’

Not every free agent acquisition is going to pan out, but both Ian and Scotty believe George Paton and Sean Payton will do just fine navigating free agency.

Ian St. Clair

I trust Payton and Paton to not make bad signings. Paton mentioned at the Combine that last year was a learning experience for him and the Broncos given the dead money they faced. Paton said they couldn’t afford any “misses.” That experience will help him and Denver this offseason as they have a little more leeway.

Scotty Payne

Like Ian, I trust the process.

Avoid old and injured wide receivers and players over a $10 million a year

No specific players are mentioned by Adam or John, but they’ve drawn a line in the sand in a few respects.

Adam Malnati

Any wide receiver that is older than 30 with a history of injuries.

John Holmes

Any player for more than $10 million per year. I hope we do not pursue a safety.

That’s a wrap on our third installment. As always, feel free to let us know what players or position groups you don’t want the Broncos to allocate large investments in free agency.

Report: Jamien Sherwood and Robert Spillane are free agents to watch for the Broncos

Indianapolis Colts v New York Jets

With Zach Baun and Nick Bolton off the board for the Broncos, a new report names Jamien Sherwood and Robert Spillane as names to watch in free agency.

If you were hoping the Broncos would sign one of the top linebackers in free agency, you’re probably a bit disappointed. Eagles re-signed All-Pro linebacker Zach Baun earlier in the week and today it was reported that the Chiefs and linebacker Nick Bolton agreed to an extension. Bolton was primed to be a top target for the Broncos who are now reevaluating their options and could be turning their sights to two other talented linebackers.

DNVR’s Zac Stevens is reporting that Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood and Raiders linebacker Robert Spillane are players to keep an eye on for the Broncos.

After talking to sources, the two ILBs to really have your eye on for Denver to pursue in free agency are:

— Jamien Sherwood from the Jets

— Robert Spillane from the Raiders

It was my understanding Nick Bolton was going to be a top target for the Broncos in free agency, but…

— Zac Stevens (@ZacStevensDNVR) March 9, 2025

Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood had a breakout year this past season and is now an intriguing option for teams in free agency. The former safety is just 25 years old and would give the Broncos a young and ascending linebacker who may have his best football ahead of him.

Before this season, Sherwood appeared in 39 games including 4 starts through three seasons and totaled 77 tackles, 4 tackles for a loss, 1 forced fumble, and 1 pass deflection. This year, he took over for an injured C.J. Mosley and had a pretty productive season. He started 16 of the 17 games for the Jets and totaled 158 total tackles, which included 98 solo tackles, which led the league, 10 tackles for a loss, 2 sacks, 2 QB hits, and 3 pass deflections.

Personally, Sherwood is my top target for the Broncos and someone I would have preferred over someone like Nick Bolton who is a liability in coverage.

Stevens also names Raiders linebacker Robert Spillane as a potential option for the Broncos. While he is not the sexiest option available, he would bring some stability and another tackling machine to the Broncos defense.

The past two seasons, Spillane has been one of the leading tacklers in the league and would bring some consistency to the Broncos linebacker room. He is 29 years old and will turn 30 during the season, so he’s more a short-term option, but he would be an upgrade over what they had the year prior.

Last season for the Raiders, Spillane totaled 158 tackles, 10 tackles for a loss, 2 interceptions, and 7 pass deflections. While he is viewed as a more downhill linebacker, he does have a total of 5 interceptions and 11 pass deflections the past two seasons, which is pretty good for the type of linebacker he is.

The Broncos currently have veteran Alex Singleton who is coming off an ACL injury, former third round pick Drew Sanders, and undrafted free agent Levelle Bailey as the linebackers on the roster. Adding one or both of these players should not be out of the question and I think Sherwood should be their top priority once the legal tampering period opens tomorrow.

When it comes to the Denver Broncos and free agency, we have you covered. Check back often for updates on news, reports, and rumors from free agency.

The legal tampering period kicks off on March 10th when teams will have a 52-hour window where they can officially begin talking to non-Broncos free agents and agreeing to deals. These deals will not become official until March 12th, when free agency officially kicks off and these players can sign these deals.

According to Over The Cap, the Denver Broncos currently have $40,851,255 million dollars in cap space available and have plenty of room to be aggressive in free agency if they decide to go that route. They’re expected to target a linebacker and safety in free agency and potentially add a wide receiver, tight end, and a defensive linemen as well.

We will be tracking all these moves before the opening of the legal tampering period and then every move the team makes after that. It figures to be yet another busy free agency period for the Broncos and hopefully, they can make some moves that help improve the team.

Broncos retain D.J. Jones, Matt Peart; add Talanoa Hufanga and Dre Greenlaw to kickstart free agency

Detroit Lions v San Francisco 49ers

The Denver Broncos kickstarted their free agency endeavors by retaining two of their own players. They also added two former San Francisco 49ers in Talanoa Hufanga and Dre Greenlaw to upgrade their defense.

The National Football League’s free agency period officially kicked off with the advent of the legal tampering period this morning. While teams can negotiate deals with free agents, they cannot become official until this Wednesday.

The Denver Broncos were among the most active teams to start the festivities. With the inside linebacker market drying up yesterday, the Broncos pivoted their strategy and made their first big investment by keeping a key member of their defense from last season in the fold.

They agreed to terms on a three-year contract with nose tackle D.J. Jones. That deal was followed up with a two-year extension for in-house backup tackle Matt Peart. But the fun didn’t stop there. Their first big outside signing was bringing in former San Francisco 49ers safety Talanoa Hufanga. They added his teammate Dre Greenlaw to upgrade the linebacker position as well.

What should Broncos Country make of these signings? And what other news tidbits should everyone be paying attention to? Let’s delve into some of my thoughts from today’s free agency frenzy and where the Broncos go from here.

Bolstering the secondary: my thoughts on signing Talanoa Hufanga

With P.J. Locke struggling last season, the Broncos’ brass made it a priority to add a starter opposite of Brandon Jones. Earlier in the afternoon, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the Broncos came to terms with safety Talanoa Hufanga. It’s a three-year contract worth up to $45 million dollars with $20 million guaranteed.

A former Pro-Bowl and All-Pro player for the 49ers in 2022, Hufanga has missed extensive time the past two seasons. An ACL tear in 2023 and a wrist injury in 2024 limited him to just 17 games in that span. If he can stay healthy for the Broncos, this is a clear-cut upgrade, but that’s a big if and honestly my only concern about the signing.

However, the franchise has done a great job over the past few seasons keeping their players healthy with Beau Lowery being Vice President of Player Health and Performance. That should help give Broncos Country a bit of optimism with reasonable concerns they have over his health. We’ll just have to wait and see.

In his four seasons with the 49ers, Hufanga appeared in 49 games with 37 starts. He racked up 219 tackles, 9 of them for loss, 7 interceptions, and 2 forced fumbles. When he is on the field, there is no doubt he is a unique chess piece capable of lining up in multiple spots across the secondary. History shows he has a knack for making big plays.

I like his fit in Defensive Coordinator Vance Joseph’s defense. On top of that, the lower number of guarantees helps protect the Broncos in the event his injury concerns show up over the next few years. Overall, I don’t mind the addition. It helps address an area of weakness and should make Denver’s defense even better in ‘25.

Addressing inside linebacker: my thoughts on signing Dre Greenlaw

On Sunday, a flurry of signings dried up the potential free agent pool at the inside linebacker. Instead of hitting the market, most of the well-known players decided to stick around with their current teams.

That left the Broncos in a bit of a precarious position considering they don’t have much depth at the position at all. However, later in the afternoon, they were able to strike a three-year deal with former 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw. Reports indicate it is a three-year deal worth up to $35 million dollars. The guaranteed money is yet to be announced, but the average annual value clocks in at less than $12 million per season.

A few years ago, Greenlaw was one of the better linebackers in the league, but a torn Achilles at the end of his ‘23 season lingered and he was shut down from action after just two regular season games in ‘24.

Like the Hufanga signing, the Broncos are hoping he can stay healthy and revert to the player he was several years ago notching back-to-back 100+ tackle campaigns. If he can do that, the Broncos’ defense could be even better this coming season.

Manning down the middle: my thoughts on re-signing D.J. Jones

Retaining nose tackle D.J. Jones was emphasized by General Manager George Paton during the 2025 NFL Combine. With hours to go before the beginning of the legal tampering period, the Broncos were able to come to term with the longtime veteran on a three-year extension worth $39 million dollars. That’s an average annual value of $13 million per year with $26 million in guarantees.

Jones was one of the better run stuffing defensive tackles in the NFL last season and was a key cog in Denver’s turnaround defensively. However, some think his extension is a little too much, especially considering he only played 40-percent of the defensive snaps in ‘24. Though I’d counter it seems fair considering the rise of the league’s salary cap which has gone up nearly 35-percent since he originally signed with the Broncos three seasons ago. Not to mention some of the big contracts we saw handed out today for defensive lineman who aren’t necessarily of Jones’ caliber.

By keeping Jones in the fold, the Broncos are set to return their top trio of defensive lineman with him alongside Zach Allen and John Franklin-Myers. They also have Malcom Roach who performed admirably in his role with the team last season. That continuity on the defensive front should bode well for the franchise heading into their 2025 campaign. Overall, I like this signing, but hope Denver brings in another player via this year’s draft.

Hart’s Grade: B+

Keeping the OL intact: my thoughts on re-signing Matt Peart

The second reported in-house signing for the Broncos was coming to a two-year extension worth $7 million dollars with backup/swing tackle Matt Peart. With incentives, the total value could reach $10 million.

This seems like a fair deal for Peart who appeared in every game for the Broncos last season. He was used as an extra offensive lineman in jumbo packages and also saw a good portion of special teams' snaps. It’s hard to find any reason to gripe or complain about keeping Peart around. Continuity on the offensive line is critical.

Hart’s Grade: A

Broncos turn to tight end Evan Engram as a potential ‘joker’ in Sean Payton’s offense

While it’s not a done deal yet, the Broncos are currently hosting former Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Evan Engram at Dove Valley.

He failed his physical with the Jaguars and saw action in just nine games last season due to suffering a torn labrum. It’s the main reason he is currently a street free agent. That means if they sign Engram, it will not count against the compensatory formula. The team is doing their due diligence relative to medicals and recovery.

Due to the injury, Engram’s production in ‘24 plummeted in comparison to ‘23 where he had over 100 receptions and nearly 1,000 yards receiving. However, his catch-rate over the past three seasons (average of 75-percent) has been one of the highest in the league. In my opinion, he would provide quarterback Bo Nix with a reliable safety valve that does a good job moving the chains.

Even if Engram is signed, I do believe the Broncos should still look for a long-term option in the draft if the opportunity presents itself.

Final thoughts on the Broncos’ start to free agency

First and foremost, keeping Jones and Peart were smart decisions. Hufanga has a lot of promise and potential as long as he remains healthy. Same goes for Greenlaw. Fans will just have to be patient and take a wait-and-see approach. But on paper, the team’s defensive roster already is better. On offense, Engram would be a fine addition, but as I mentioned above, they should still take a shot finding one in the draft if possible.

Horse Tracks: Broncos signaling aggressive offseason even before Free Agency opens

Super Bowl LVIII - San Francisco 49ers v Kansas City Chiefs

With plans of signing former Niners defenders Talanoa Hufanga and Dre Greenlaw, plus re-signing DJ Jones, the Broncos are looking to showcase another aggressive defense.

Good morning, Broncos Country!

Free Agency hasn’t even officially officially begun yet, and the Broncos are already going big and fast — both literally and figuratively.

Late Sunday night the Broncos re-signed nose tackle DJ Jones to a three-year deal, keeping a dominant defensive line intact for at least another year.

Early Monday afternoon, the Broncos had snagged 49ers’ All Pro safety Talanoa Hufanga for a three-year, $45 million bag — providing Brandon Jones a worthy partner on the opposite side of the field.

And when news broke that Broncos’ free agent linebacker Cody Barton had signed a three-year deal with the Titans, leaving a gaping hole at an already vulnerable position for the Broncos, Denver wasted no time finding a replacement.

And they didn’t hold back, grabbing arguably the best free-agent linebacker available and considered one of the top free agents overall this offseason — 49ers’ Dre Greenlaw.

Dre Greenlaw, now a Bronco!

In '23, he had a league-low -7.9 receptions over expected (5 yds/tgt allowed, least among LBs)

49ers pass D allowed 1.7 fewer yards/attempt on MOF targeted passes w/ Greenlaw on the field (6.8) vs off the field (8.5) past 2 seasons pic.twitter.com/pCnJ9K3kXi

— Jordan Lopez (@JordanTLopez) March 10, 2025

NFL Network’s Gregg Rosenthal argued that even though Greenlaw played a handful of snaps this season, it’s a big addition for Denver.

“I love this move,” Rosenthal said on the air. “He put only three quarters on film last year, but they were the most electric three quarters I’ve seen from a linebacker in a long time. It made me think ‘OK, he’s going to recover well’.”

Rosenthal was particularly fond of the Broncos bringing in two of the Niners’ best defenders despite both players have down years in 2024 due to injury.

“It’s going to totally change the aggression of a defense that already has a great attitude and was terrific,” he added. “Those are two defensive lynchpins on that team.”

The best part of Monday’s news was the signal that the Broncos’ brass considers this a team on the rise and wants to keep the defense dominant.

Sean Payton made an interesting comment during Combine interviews that finding great defensive players in the first round of the Draft could arguably be just as helpful to a young quarterback as finding offensive weapons.

The direction the Broncos go in the Draft is still somewhat of an unknown — as is the rest of free agency — but we know Bo Nix is going to be able to benefit from a menacing defense once again.

Looking for some ideas from the locals

Since Denver is one of the preliminary round sites for March Madness this year, SBNation’s college basketball team is looking for great local insight to share with visitors about their city.

So I could use your help in the comments! If you have any ideas for the following, let me know...

  • Best place to eat before the game ( like a “Diner Drive-ins and Dives” kind of vibe)
  • Best sports bar to celebrate a victory
  • Best ice cream spot to bounce back after a loss (for the kids); Best bar to drown your sorrows (for the grown-ups!)
  • Coolest places to visit in the city (museums, tours, entertainment)
  • Where the true Denver sports fan hangs for fun (can be different for different sports)

One more request...

Last year at this time, I hastily threw together a “Broncos Madness” post to have a little fun with my two favorite sports - NFL and college basketball.

Many of you made comments rightfully pointing out that the matchups within the four divisions were not fair (or not really in descending order of greatness to mimic a true No. 1 seed v. a No. 16 seed) and I had also left off a few players dear to your hearts.

So I invite you this year to provide some preliminary guidance rather than useless feedback once it begins! I realize this is a dangerous request so know in advance I will never be able to accommodate all ideas from everyone. But I do invite the input in the comments below!

Report: Broncos sign wide receiver Trent Sherfield

NFC Wild Card Playoffs: Minnesota Vikings v Los Angeles Rams

The Broncos add to their receiver depth by adding Trent Sherfield.

According to Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports, the Denver Broncos have signed veteran wide receiver/special teamer Trent Sherfield to a two-year, $6 million dollar deal that has $2 million dollars of incentives built in per Mike Klis.

Sources: Free agent WR Trent Sherfield is signing with the #Broncos on a 2-year, $8M deal. pic.twitter.com/CW3EJpkqhZ

— Jordan Schultz (@Schultz_Report) March 12, 2025

Trent Sherfield is a 6-1, 206 pound wide receiver who is 29 years old and has been a journeyman player throughout his career. While he is listed as a wide receiver, he primarily plays special teams and just adds depth to your wide receiver room. KOA’s Benjamin Allbright reached out to a former teammate who described Sherfield as a “Glue guy” who does everything and that is basically known for his blocking and special teams work.

The Broncos did lose core special teamer Tremon Smith to the Texans on Monday, so Sherfield could be viewed as his replacement. He could also be viewed as Lil’Jordan Humphrey’s replacement as well with his run blocking skills being listed as a strength.

He is a journeyman player who started his career with the Cardinals and played for them from 2018 through the 2020 season, and then he had one-year stints with the 49ers, Dolphins, Bills, Vikings, and now joins the Broncos. Through his seven seasons in the NFL, he has appeared in 112 games and has 86 receptions for 1,013 yards, and 6 touchdowns.

Sherfield profiles as a Sean Payton type of player who can do a lot of the dirty work and be a key member of the 53-man roster. He can play special teams, he can block, he can play receiver, and be a good member of the team. The fact he has made a career of this despite not being a productive receiver shows how valuable he is as a locker room player and on special teams.

Not the sexiest signing but it’s a signing you need to fill out your 53-man roster and do all the dirty work that goes unnoticed by many on the field.

Horse Tracks: Why are the Broncos going defense in free agency?

Los Angeles Rams v San Francisco 49ers

The Denver Broncos are shoring up what on paper looked like a great defense in 2024. Let’s talk about why.

The Denver Broncos statistically had a superb defense in 2024.

They were 3rd in points allowed, 7th in yards given up, and 7th in takeaways.

So you may be asking yourself why they have gone heavy on defense in free agency. With the pickups of safety Talanoa Hufanga, inside linebacker Dre Greenlaw, and resigning interior lineman D.J. Jones, the Broncos in my opinion are making the right moves.

The thing about the 2024 season was that the defense did work against a lot of weak opponents (offensively speaking). When faced with top talent offenses, the story was not the same.

With Vance Joseph getting a defensive reload, they are going to be tough as nails to play against in 2025.

The middle of the field was suspect consistently with weaknesses at free safety and inside linebacker all year long. Greenlaw and Hufanga alone are going to cause migraines for opposing offenses when they play Denver.

With the young offense growing around a young quarterback, I also think that Sean Payton wants to inject more youth to grow with Bo Nix over the next 4-5 seasons instead of trying to bring in established vets.

Given what we’ve seen thus far, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the first three picks in the draft for the Broncos being offensive players.

Sean Payton has found his Joker!

According to his agent Mike McCartney, the Denver Broncos have signed tight end Evan Engram to a two-year deal. 9NEWS Denver’s Mike Klis is reporting that it’s a two-year deal worth $23 million dollars with $16.5 million of that guaranteed.

The Broncos win the AFC West battle for Evan Engram! (suck it Chargers). Engram was released by the Jaguars last week and spent Sunday night and most of Monday with the Broncos brass before leaving without a contract. He spent yesterday visiting with the rival Chargers before signing a two-year deal with the Broncos.

Engram will turn 31 years old in September, but now gives the Broncos a receiving threat at tight end, which is something they have been lacking for quite a while. This past year was a down one for him as he only played in 9 games due to a hamstring injury that cost him three games and then a torn labrum in his right shoulder that required surgery. However, Engram was one of the better tight ends in the league the year prior when he had 114 receptions for 963 yards and 4 touchdowns. Now, that he is healthy, will have an entire offseason with the Broncos strength and conditioning staff, he should bounce back to his previous form.

At this stage of his career, Engram is not a big down the field threat for the Broncos, but he gives them a high-volume middle of the field threat for quarterback Bo Nix. He has run after the catch potential and Sean Payton can scheme him open. Payton and Nix love the quick passing game and Engram fits very well in that role and I expect him to be a high volume receiver for the Broncos.

I do not believe this signing takes the Broncos out of drafting a tight end, but it may take them out of the first round tight end conversation. Both Tyler Warren and Colston Loveland figure to be off the board by 20 anyways, but the Broncos still could draft one on day two. Some names to watch are Elijah Arroyo, Mason Taylor, Terrance Ferguson, and Gunnar Helm.

At the end of the day, I love this signing for the Broncos. It gives them something they desperately needed on offense and opens up multiple avenues for them in the draft. It also rounds out a very productive free agency period that landed them linebacker Dre Greenlaw, safety Talanoa Hufanga, and now Evan Engram.

Exciting times in Broncos Country!
