2025 Denver Broncos 53-man roster projection: Pre-training camp edition

DENVER BRONCOS

Projecting the Broncos 53-man roster coming out of training camp before the start of training camp.

Broncos training camps kicks off later this week so it is a good time to do a pre-training camp 53-man roster projection. Unlike past seasons, this Broncos roster has very few openings or roster battles and they have depth up-and-down the roster. So, the majority of the 53-man roster seems set but those battles for the final few spots on the roster could be fierce.

Now, a lot can and probably will change between now and the roster cutdown period. You will see some players step up, some players disappoint, and unfortunately, injuries most likely will happen. So, that could impact that roster and change the way we view things moving forward.

So, with all that said, here is my pre-training camp Denver Broncos 53-man roster projection.

Quarterback(2)

Making the team: Bo Nix and Jarrett Stidham

Cut: Sam Ehlinger

No real surprises here as Bo Nix is your starter and Jarrett Stidham is your veteran backup. I have the team cutting third-string quarterback Sam Ehlinger who will likely land on the Broncos practice squad. With the third-string quarterback not on the active roster, it will open up a roster spot elsewhere on the team.

The Broncos having a drama free quarterback room will be nice to see.

Running Back

Making the team: R.J. Harvey, J.K. Dobbins, Jaleel McLaughlin, and Audric Estime

Cut: Michael Burton, Tyler Badie, and Blake Watson

Outside of rookie R.J. Harvey and veteran J.K. Dobbins, the Broncos running back room seems up in the air.

Jaleel McLaughlin was the Broncos best back last season and seems to be a favorite of Sean Payton’s but may not be a lock to make the team. He is undersized, doesn’t bring much as a pass-catcher and will need to prove himself as a returner to contribute on special teams. For now, I am playing it safe and projecting him to make the team. The same goes for Audric Estime who is the only other power back on the roster behind Dobbins who has his own injury concerns. He is squarely on the roster bubble but I have him making the team right now.

I initially had fullback Michael Burton on the team but I believe we’ll see them put him on the practice squad early in the year as they did last season. This will open up a roster spot elsewhere on the roster.

Wide Receiver

Making the team: Courtland Sutton, Marvin Mims, Pat Bryant, Troy Franklin, Devaughn Vele, and Trent Sherfield

Cut: A.T. Perry, Michael Bandy, Jerjuan Newton, Joaquin Davis, Courtney Jackson, Kyrese White

This room seems set heading into camp. Courtland Sutton returns as your WR1 with young receivers Marvin Mims, Troy Franklin, Pat Bryant, and Devaughn Vele behind him. I also have veteran special teamer Trent Sherfield making the team as a core special teamer. If cut, he would hit the Broncos with a $3.25 million dollar dead cap hit so he seems like a lock for a roster spot.

Barring injury, I don’t see any real avenues for any of the other receivers to make the team. They’ll all be competing for a spot on the Broncos practice squad in all likelihood.

Tight End

Making the team: Evan Engram, Adam Trautman, Nate Adkins, and Caleb Lohner

Cut: Lucas Krull and Caleb Prieskorn

Again, no real surprises here. Evan Engram is your ‘Joker’ while Trautman and Adkins are you traditional in-line blockers. I also have rookie tight end Caleb Lohner making the team due to the team not wanting to risk him to waivers. I believe he can show enough to make the team but much-like like Frank Crum last year, they’ll find a roster spot for him.

Barring injuries, I do not see many surprises happening here.

Offensive Line

Making the team: Garett Bolles, Ben Powers, Luke Wattenberg, Quinn Meinerz, Mike McGlinchey, Matt Peart, Alex Palczewski, Frank Crum, and Alex Forsyth

Cut: Marques Cox, Calvin Throckmorton, Clay Webb, Joe Michalski, Nick Garguilo, Will Sherman, and Xavier Truss

Your starting five and key reserves seem locked in. You will have all five starting offensive lineman returning this year with Matt Peart serving as your swing tackle and Alex Palczewski being your tackle/guard reserve. I believe we’ll see Frank Crum make the team and continue his development on the active roster while Alex Forsyth makes the team as the backup center.

The only two I could see changing, again barring injury, are Crum and more likely, Forsyth. I Crum makes it but he’s on the bubble and I believe we’ll see Clay Webb push Forsyth for a roster spot. The final roster spot or two along the offensive line will be one of the key roster battles to watch throughout camp.

Defensive Line

Making the team: Zach Allen, John Franklin-Myers, D.J. Jones, Malcolm Roach, Sai’vion Jones, and Jordan Jackson

Cut: Eyioma Uwazurike, Matt Henningsen, Kristian Williams, and Jordan Miller.

Another positional group that is mostly set. Allen, JFM, and Jones are your starters while Roach and the rookie Jones will rotate in. Jordan Jackson made the team last season and I believe he has a good shot to do that again this season.

I don’t think Uwazurike, Henningsen, Miller, or Williams will really push for a roster spot but I would love to be wrong here.

EDGE

Making the team: Nik Bonitto, Jonathon Cooper, Jonah Elliss, Dondre Tillman, and Que Robinson

Cut: Andrew Farmer and Johnny Walker Jr.

Once again, another positional group that's pretty much set. Bonitto and Cooper are your starters and Elliss and Tillman are your rotational players who both had 5 sacks last year. The rookie Que Robinson who had a good spring and can play special teams makes it as the fifth edge rusher. I don’t see Farmer or Walker Jr. really pushing any of these guys for a roster spot.

Linebacker

Making the team: Dre Greenlaw, Alex Singleton, Justin Strnad, and Drew Sanders

Cut: Levelle Bailey, JB Brown, Karene Reid, and Jordan Turner

The Broncos linebacker room is full of questions and unknowns as we head into camp. Will Dre Greenlaw be healthy and return to form? How does Alex Singleton look post ACL? Can Drew Sanders finally breakout? and will any of the UDFA’s surprise and make the team?

The only real certainty is Justin Strnad being a core special teamer once again.

I have faith that Greenlaw will return to form and be a difference maker in the middle of the Broncos defense and pair nicely with Singleton. I think Sanders will be a fun “pressure player” they bring in occasionally and hopefully, he can get some sacks.

As for the UDFA’s, we’ll have to see if anyone of them can push for a roster spot. With these questions, they could certainly leapfrog someone and/or just play well enough to make the team. It’s one of the more intriguing positional groups on the roster.

Cornerback

Making the team: Pat Surtain II, Jahdae Barron, Riley Moss, Ja’Quan McMillian, and Kris Abrams-Draine

Cut: Damarri Mathis, Quinton Newsome, Mario Goodrich, Taylor Reese, Jaden Robinson, and Joshua Pickett

Again, no real surprises here.

The only thing to really keep an eye on is if McMillian could be traded, especially if Abrams-Draine has a good summer. Otherwise, this room is set and looks deep and talented.

Mathis, Newsome, Goodrich, Reese, and the UDFA’s are going to have play well and force their way on the roster. Otherwise, they’re all pushing for a spot on the practice squad.

Safety

Making the team: Brandon Jones, Talanoa Hufanga, P.J. Locke, Sam Franklin Jr., and JL Skinner

Cut: Devon Key, Delarrin Turner-Yell, and Keidron Smith

Jones and Hufanga are your starters, P.J. Locke is good depth, and Franklin Jr. and Skinner add special teams value. I originally had Skinner off the roster but I added him back after I removed Burton.

Key and Smith were not great for the Broncos last year and Turner-Yell has struggled when healthy. So, I don’t see any of these three players making a serious push for a roster spot.

Special Teams

Making the team: Wil Lutz, Jeremy Crawshaw, and Mitchell Fraboni

The Broncos will have Lutz returning as their kicker and Fraboni returning as their long snapper. Rookie punter Jeremy Crawshaw joins the team and enters camp with no competition for the starting punter job.

Pat Surtain II believes Bo Nix is going to be have a big year

Denver Broncos v Cincinnati Bengals

Optimism is high and, finally, for good reason. The Denver Broncos have a quarterback it believes in.

The Denver Broncos are gearing up for training camp to begin this week. Several players met with the media today and one topic that came up was obviously second-year quarterback, Bo Nix. When reigning NFL Defensive MVP Pat Surtain II was asked about Nix, he said the young quarterback has a lot more confidence this year and believes he’ll “make a lot of noise” this season.

— Zac Stevens (@ZacStevensDNVR) July 22, 2025

Zac Stevens from DNVR was solid getting these clips out for fans as usual. While I know no player is going to drag his own teammate and will always hype their guy, for a change the tape from last season truly backs up the hype around Bo.

One team in particular that I hope he eviscerates is the Philadelphia Eagles on the road. Not for any angst I have against the Eagles, but towards a fan blogger who trashed on Nix and the Broncos in his post last month.

The Eagles play nine teams that made the playoffs last year. Not all nine will make it this year. The Broncos feel like easy money to be one of them. A losing record by Denver shouldn’t be a surprise.

I’d love for the surprise to be a 30-27 road win in overtime against the defending Super Bowl champions. Although, one day I hope to be this confident (arrogant?) in my team each offseason. Perhaps that day is finally close again!

The Denver Broncos know what work needs to be done for them to have a successful season

One of my favorite things about the Sean Payton era to date with the Denver Broncos is how he keeps them grounded in reality.

We got a taste of that when Mike McGlinchey was asked whether or not this feels like a championship-level team. I love how he started his answer: “ I mean, we haven’t even practiced yet...”

The Broncos know every year they start 0-0 just like every other team. Last season is over and done with. Now you have another opportunity to earn a shot at the postseason.

Questions about how good the team is may sound interesting to the media, but the simple reality is that no one knows what caliber this team is until it gets tested.

One thing that drove me nuts in the recent losing seasons leading up to 2024 was how there were many players constantly talking big about how good the team was when they had yet to post a winning season. I get it that having an optimistic mindset is very helpful, but I honestly think so is being real and holding oneself accountable.

Fans and media talk about the sky being the limit, and that is all good and well. Players knowing and saying they have work to do sets the stage for them to achieve lofty goals.

2025 Broncos Training Camp: Acclimation Day 2 News and Notes

DENVER BRONCOS

News and notes from day 2 of the Broncos acclimation period.

Today was Day 2 of their acclimation ramp practice, the final one before Broncos camp officially kicks off tomorrow in front of nearly 800 fans in attendance. Today’s practice was a little bit longer than their opening period on Wednesday, but it was still a non-padded ramp-up practice. With fans in attendance tomorrow, the team will allow media members to live tweet what is happening throughout practice, so we should have a better idea of what’s happening on the Broncos' practice field.

Broncos Head Coach Sean Payton did not meet with the media today, but we did hear from All-Pro guard Quinn Meinerz and safety Talanoa Hufanga.

— Denver Broncos (@Broncos) July 24, 2025

Today we have the Broncos pass rush being dominant, Bo Nix’s arm strength wowing his teammates, injury updates, news and notes, notable quotes and more!

Broncos' pass rush was dominant

The Broncos' defense led the NFL in sacks last season and is showing that they still have an elite and dominant pass rush. During today’s ramp-up practice, Nik Bonitto, Zach Allen, Jonathon Cooper, John Franklin-Myers, Dondrea Tillman, and even Drew Sanders showed off their pass rush potential.

Takeaway from Day 2 of Broncos training camp:

This pass rush is insane.

Jonathon Cooper, Nik Bonitto, Zach Allen and John Franklin-Myers all got after it.

— Zac Stevens (@ZacStevensDNVR) July 24, 2025

It is still early in camp, still in their ramp-up period, and defense is always ahead of the offense early in camp, but this is exciting to see. They have the same overall unit returning this year, with a good mix of established veterans and intriguing young players who could be on the verge of a breakout year.

Zach Allen, John Franklin-Myers, and D.J. Jones are established veterans, but then you have Nik Bonitto and Jonathon Cooper, who are both coming off breakout seasons. If they continue to improve, this pass rush could get even better. On top of that, you have second-year pass rusher Jonah Elliss, Dondrea Tillman, and exciting rookies Que Robinson and Sai’vion Jones mixing in as well. So, the Broncos have a young and talented pass rush unit that has the legit potential to be even better than they were last season.

Hell, we haven’t even mentioned Drew Sanders, who is expected to be used as a blitz-specialist/pressure player this upcoming season. Defensive Coordinator Vance Joseph can scheme up some exotic blitzes to get after quarterbacks this upcoming season.

Safety Talanoa Hufanga was asked if the Broncos' pass rush would make things easier for hi,m and he told reporters that it would make things much easier and that they have “Dogs up front”.

“It makes it a lot easier. You got dogs up front. I think they led the sacks last year [with] 63. So it makes it easier for us, but at the same time, we want to make it so they can have sacks too. We’ve got to cover long and get sticky in the back end so they can make it right up front.”

If the Broncos' pass rush can repeat what they did last season or even improve, this defense could be very dangerous. They added Hufanga, a first-round cornerback in Jahdae Barron, a stud linebacker in Dre Greenlaw, and already have the reigning DPOY in Pat Surtain II. If the pass rush is dominant and all the other pieces live up to expectations, this defense will be elite.

Bo Nix “wows” with his arm strength

One of the narratives thrown around about quarterback Bo Nix was that he had limited arm strength and a “noodle arm”. These people apparently never watched Nix at Oregon because I watched a bunch of his tape, and it was clear he had really good arm strength and could drive the ball if needed.

These narratives were blown up during the season when Nix launched multiple impressive deep throws during the season. He threw an absolute dart to Mims vs. the Browns that resulted in a 93-yard touchdown, another bomb that was an absolute dime to Mims vs. the Bengals, and had the long touchdown to Troy Franklin vs. the Bills.

Well, he is still impressing people with his arm strength, but this time, it’s his own teammates.

Talanoa Hufanga has high praise for Bo Nix:

“Not every game in the NFL are you going to play a Quarterback that can launch it that far” pic.twitter.com/1rRSVyZFKl

— DNVR Broncos (@DNVR_Broncos) July 24, 2025

The veteran safety was asked about what kind of stress Nix puts on a secondary. He told reporters that Nix is a smart player who is very accurate, and then mentioned what kind of arm he has. He mentioned that on the first day of OTAs, the first pass Nix threw was over everybody’s head.

“First and foremost, I think he’s just a smart player. Then you get on the field and you see how accurate he is and what kind of arm he has. Especially at the first day at OTAs, the first ball was over everybody’s head and I was like, ‘Wow.’ You have to account for those kind of things. Not every game that you play in the NFL are you going to play a quarterback that can launch it that far. For him, he has that ability to just get it over the defense’s head and that changes your perspective on how to play him. to see what kind of teammate that he, is a great person and great player. Just seeing how he handles himself in the locker room and the cafeteria and all that, I’m excited to play with him.”

This is an element of Nix’s game that is often overlooked. He is viewed as a checkdown merchant who will throw short passes, and he does do that quite a lot. However, he has also proven that he can launch a ball deep and throw it accurately while doing so.

Haters and doubters will remain, but the people, players, and coaches inside the Broncos building know the type of arm talent that Nix possesses. I would anticipate a few more deep shots this upcoming season.

Notable Quotes

Safety Talanoa Hufanga on if he is changing anything to stay healthy

“It’s the same physical play. I think for me, you have got to take care of the body even more and have no regrets in everything I do. I go out there to play the game the right way, and that’s playing fast and playing physical. Injuries happen, that’s part of the game. For me, I’m just going to step on that field and have confidence that I can play the game I play.”

Safety Talanoa Hufanga on how important his relationship with S Brandon Jones is to him

“I think for us, we had the same [defensive backs] coach [in college]. I watched a lot of ‘B Jones’ (S Brandon Jones) film throughout college, and so I already knew a lot about him, seeing the way he plays and how fast he is. He’s probably one of the fastest players on the team, and so to see him in person was just amazing. The cool thing about it is the first week I got here, he’s like, ‘Hey, do you want to get work in?’ And there was no hesitation. It wasn’t like, ‘Hey, you’re on this by yourself.’ He’s like, ‘No, we’re all in this together.’ So it was really cool to see him, a veteran like that step up to lead another vet in the right way.”

Safety Talanoa Hufanga on how vocal guys have been about reaching their ultimate goals at the end of the year

“The goal for every team should be the Super Bowl, right? Do we look at it that way? No. We look at it day-by-day. A person who goes out to war in the Army—I’ve talked to them—they do not think about Thanksgiving, they don’t think about Christmas. They think about that day that they’re in and what they got to do that day to execute. That’s what we got to do. I know it’s not that serious. We get to go home to our wives, our children and stuff like that. Those are the goals that we put out there for us to execute the right way.”

All-Pro Guard Quinn Meinerz on if he thinks this is QB Bo Nix’s team

“It was kind of his team when he got here. Our job as the offensive line is to make him feel comfortable both on the field and off the field. He’s done a great job himself preparing for his moments. I think we’ve all done our job around him to make him feel comfortable—players and staff—to continue to be behind him and let Bo Nix be Bo Nix.”

All-Pro Guard Quinn Meinerz on returning every starter on the offensive line

“Having the same [offensive] line is incredible. We can just pick up right where we left off. All of our calls that we’ve developed throughout the years, we already kind of know what to do. We can move through our installs faster and we can get into more detail work and more technique stuff. A lot of the stuff that we’ve been building through the foundation is something we don’t have to really think about anymore. There’s still a lot of details and finishing to do with this group, so I’m excited to keep working every day.”

All-Pro Guard Quinn Meinerz on the Walton-Penner Family Ownership Group’s impact on the organization

“They’ve been doing an incredible job. It’s players first by far and that’s everywhere. Our nutrition, our weight room and our recovery stuff. If it’s something our staff believes will give us an advantage, it’s here. You’re seeing an incredible facility being built right there and it’s being built incredibly fast. It’s great having their presence here and to know how much they care about us as players.”

All-Pro Guard Quinn Meinerz on facing a talented defensive front every day

“It’s incredible to be able to go against Zach Allen every single day. I win some, he wins some, and it’s a nonstop battle. We both have a ton of passion and grit for this game. When we’re out there battling and then when we’re done, we’re asking, ‘Hey, why did you do that? Why did you do this?’ We’re bouncing ideas off of each other because he also has that drive to be the best in the league. It’s incredible to build work together with these guys. D.J. Jones is a hard person to move in the run game and John-Franklin Myers—we have such depth at all of these positions that I have to wake up every morning preparing to go against these guys. It’s great to have a great defensive line and a great offensive line going together because it’s only going to make us better.”

Day 1 of Broncos camp is officially here!

The acclimation practices are old news, the fans were in the bleachers, and the Broncos hit the practice field to open up Broncos camp earlier today. With construction ongoing, the team limited it to just roughly 800 fans, but they showed up and were loud and proud for their Broncos.

The Broncos second-year quarterback is looking like a legitimate starter so far in the early portions of training camp. He looks smooth, in control, making quicker decisions, looks comfortable in the offense and made the play of the day today during team drills.

Bo Nix looked crisp today.

Had an incredible across the field throw to Pat Bryant. Hit Troy Franklin in the middle of the field for 15 yards.

Making many other quick decisions with the ball out quick.

Defense continued to put pressure on him too.

— Zac Stevens (@ZacStevensDNVR) July 25, 2025

On a play action play, Bo Nix was on a bootleg and running towards the sideline, and threw a potentially no-look crossbody throw to rookie wide receiver Pat Bryant. He did this with a blitzing Alex Singleton chasing him down, made a difficult throw, and threw an accurate strike to Bryant, who had room to run to the end zone.

It was a play-action heavy practice, and Nix, who plays at his best on the move, had a very good practice today. Unfortunately, the Broncos do not allow any recording, we do not have any videos of this play, but the media covering practice have all been raving about it.

After practice, tight end Evan Engram was asked about Bo Nix’s quarterback craft and had some high praise for the Broncos' starting quarterback.

“Attention to detail, his focus, his drive to get one percent better every day and his comradery with his teammates. He’s not afraid to speak up, he’s not afraid to challenge you and he challenges himself at the highest level. That gives some ground to challenge others. I’m very impressed with him, very blessed to be a part of his team and be his teammate. The sky’s the limit with that type of mentality. With the way he works, the talent will take care of itself.”

Nix has looked confident and in charge of the offense all offseason, according to reports, and is continuing that high level of play in the early parts of Broncos Camp. He is also continuing to impress his teammates and coaches with the work he puts in behind the scenes.

The future is very bright.

Troy Franklin and Pat Bryant have big days

The Broncos' wide receiver room is deep and looking for someone to fully break out behind Courtland Sutton. We saw Marvin Mims Jr. have a strong second half last year, but needed at least one more to step up to feel really good about this room.

Well, after one practice, the Broncos saw two of their receivers have big practices. Second-year speedster Troy Franklin and rookie Pat Bryant both had strong days during day 1 of Broncos camp.

Stidham hits Troy Franklin for a 75-yard TD down the left sideline during team. Burned Damarri Mathis and Devon Key. #Broncos @KOAColorado

— Ryan Edwards (@redwardsradio) July 25, 2025

Franklin’s big play came during the Broncos' opening team period, where he hauled in a 75-yard touchdown from backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham. He used his speed to beat Damarri Mathis and Devon Key for this long touchdown and continued making the explosive plays he made all offseason. He was heavily targeted throughout today’s practice and put together a strong showing.

Earlier in the offseason, Sean Payton noted that Franklin was having a strong offseason, but when asked about him today, he said it’s still too early to call him a breakout player. However, he did repeat that Franklin has had a good offseason and had a good day today.

“We just started, but do I think he has a chance to? I felt like we began to see that towards the latter part of last season. I’m looking forward to seeing him. He’s had a real good offseason. It’s just a little early to make headlines, ‘[WR] Troy Franklin’s making steps up.’ He had a good day.”

As for Bryant, he was very active today and was targeted heavily by quarterback Bo Nix throughout the practice. The highlight play was a cross-body throw by Nix to an open Bryant in the middle of the field, where he had room to run still.

Top play from second team period of #BroncosCamp:

Bo Nix booted to the right and hit Pat Bryant on a backside dig. Tough cross-body throw on the run, but he put the ball on the money and Bryant had room to run up the middle of the field.

— Henry Chisholm (@HenryChisholm) July 25, 2025

After Courtland Sutton, the Broncos' wide receiver room is a bit up in the air. However, Bryant, being heavily targeted by Nix today, according to reports, could give us an idea of the current pecking order in that room.

After practice, Head Coach Sean Payton was asked about Bryant, and he told reporters that the rookie receiver is smart and that he has been a quick study.

He’s smart, and it’s just getting him into position so that these plays… For most of the rookie class, it’s the same. Their acclimation to it, they’re behind. But he’s a quick study.”

Payton has gone out of his way to compare Bryant to Michael Thomas, who was a target hogging monster with the Saints for a few seasons. Now, in day 1 of Broncos Camp, Bryant was heavily targeted by Nix throughout the practice.

Just something to keep an eye on moving forward.

Rookie punter Jeremy Crawshaw was BOOMING punts

We’re talking punters!

The Aussie rookie punter showed off the big leg we heard about after he was drafted and was reportedly putting on a punting clinic today. DNVR’s Zac Stevens tracked one punt that came from the Broncos' own end zone and landed on the 30-yard line on the opposite end of the field while having good hang time.

He started off by going 70-plus on a punt when he was standing in the back of the end zone. Hang time was north of five seconds. It was a missile. This is what I’m talking about when I say he’s got the driver in his bag. Then he capped the period by dropping three inside the 10. https://t.co/fsN3rAbbRN

— Andrew Mason (@MaseDenver) July 25, 2025

Having a punter with a leg like that in the Mile High air is a weapon.

Punters are not the sexiest positional group to talk about, but they’re important. The field position game is an important one that’s played out throughout the game and can decide who wins and loses that game. Having a punter who can flip the field position and pin the opposing offense deep in their own territory against this talented Broncos defense will be huge.

Payton mentioned how Crawshaw can occasionally shank a punt here and there, so he will need to work on his mechanics and consistency, but you love this leg strength.

Notable Quotes

Head Coach Sean Payton on DT Malcolm Roach’s energy

“There’s an optimism and a positive energy. With him, as soon as you find yourself maybe [thinking], ‘All right, it’s a hot day…’ He just has that energy and adds a lot to a room. It’s kind of contagious. You feel his presence—and to your point—sometimes you hear him before you see him. I don’t mind that with him.”

Head Coach Sean Payton on how OLB Jonathon Cooper has embraced being a leader

“It’s extremely important to him. I think he’s one of our tough competitors. There’s something to him relative to the importance of playing hard and with good technique. He’s very coachable. I would say he’s one of our team leaders. I think sometimes that comes in the form of, ‘Follow me on how I work.’ Sometimes it can be vocal. He’s a diligent worker.”

Head Coach Sean Payton on what he values most about his relationship with Owner & CEO Greg Penner

“He’s out here a lot. I really enjoy it. There was a little gap here in the offseason where we didn’t see each other, but we communicate daily. It’s nice. It’s good to have your owner in the building and very present. Both he and [Owner] Carrie [Walton Penner] are and we’re fortunate that way.”

EDGE Jonathon Cooper on how much responsibility he feels to get the team to the next level

“Yes, I feel a big responsibility for it. I feel like a lot of the guys on the team look to me just to be that vocal leader, to be that guy. I have to set the example every single day, make sure I’m showing up to work, make sure I’m being a professional, and just taking it day-by-day, working hard, taking every rep seriously, and yes, just leading by example and also being vocal. I think it’s extremely important, and I definitely feel that responsibility.”

EDGE Jonathon Cooper on how much fun it is to watch the young outside linebackers compete

“It’s awesome. [OLB] Que [Robinson] is coming on for sure. Definitely a big talent for us. I think he’s going to be a great addition to the team. [OLB] Jonah [Elliss] is coming along for sure. He’s battling back from that injury, but he’s doing really well. And [OLB] Dondrea Tillman, he’s out there hooping every single day. If you really just sit back and watch him, he’s really crafting and really working. I couldn’t be more proud and happy for my unit and stuff like that. We’re really just getting started. Everybody’s working and everybody’s feeling good, but we know we have a lot of work to get done. We know we haven’t really proven what we want to yet and earn our respect.”

EDGE Jonathon Cooper on what he sees from OLB Nik Bonitto

“Yes, just seeing him [OLB Nik Bonitto] work. He’s been working every day. He wants to be the best that he can be, and that’s something that we all carry with ourselves. But Nik’s a great guy. I mean, he’s becoming an even better player. He knows he’s not just satisfied with what he did last year. He knows he can become better. So the work’s just getting started.”

TE Evan Engram on the reception he received from Broncos County

“Honestly, the best. The fans have been great, especially on social media and just the outreach. Even my family is getting a lot of support. I’m just very blessed to be here in a great organization and be a part of great fan base. [I’m] looking forward to giving them a great product on the field as a whole team.”

TE Evan Engram on working with Head Coach Sean Payton

“It’s been awesome, really. I feel really at home in this offense. I feel like my strengths are being used at the highest level. He [Head Coach Sean Payton] also challenges me to be sharp with my tools and be sharp with my details, and the little things I need to clean up and get better at. He challenges me every single day. The different ways that they’re planning to use me, the mentality they have and [the mentality] I want to have in the run game as well to make that entire thing universal. I’m just really excited to be in his scheme and excited work with him throughout the season to help this team the best way I can.”

TE Evan Engram on constantly working to enhance his game

“I’m just addicted to getting better. I never want to put a ceiling or a limit on the evolution of my game. There’s always something I want to improve. I’m constantly chasing perfection. Perfection is impossible but the closer I can get, the harder it is to beat me and the more I help my team. That’s just the mentality I have. I constantly want to learn. I want to be a great leader, but also, I can be led as well. I’m just in a great place here, just the mentality we have here at getting better every single day, 1% better. It’s just the way I am, and it feels good to be in a place that matches that.”

TE Evan Engram on embracing the ‘Joker’ role in the offense

“I definitely think the fans and you guys are having a lot more fun with it. Whatever you guys want to perceive it as, you guys have that. I just see that as being reliable, being clutch, making plays and just doing my job at the highest level. Whatever I’m asked to do in the run game, in the pass game, in the locker room and in the weight room. Just doing my job at the highest level. Doing that and [with] the work, the results will come and we can have more fun with it as we go.”

Report: Broncos LB Drew Sanders suffered a tendon injury and is expected to miss the start of the season

NFL: AFC Wild Card Round-Denver Broncos at Buffalo Bills

Mark Konezny-Imagn Images

Broncos will be without Drew Sanders to start the season.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Denver Broncos linebacker Drew Sanders suffered a tendon injury and is expected to miss the start of the season. He states that further testing will need to be done to determine the extent of his injury.

#Broncos LB Drew Sanders, an up-and-coming defender, suffered a tendon injury in his foot in practice that will keep him out an extended period of time, sources say post-MRI.

Sanders is not expected back before the season begins and further testing will determine what’s next. pic.twitter.com/oEobvTmdmk

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) July 27, 2025

Sanders, who was carted off the practice field on Saturday, was fighting for a spot on the Broncos roster, but now will likely start the season on the injured reserve.

This is a major blow to Sanders, who missed the majority of last season due to an achilles injury. He worked his way back from that injury and was on the field for the final few games of last season. Sanders made it through the offseason without any setbacks and was even a standout player during these first few training camp practices, but now he’s dealing with this injury.

The Broncos’ linebacker room was already a question mark with Dre Greenlaw and Alex Singleton coming off major injuries. Losing Sanders for an extended period of time is a blow to their depth at that position. On the other hand, it does give the Broncos’ linebackers lower on the depth chart an opportunity to make the team. Second-year linebacker Levelle Bailey has been having a strong start to camp and could benefit from Sanders’ unfortunate injury if he is sidelined for an extended period of time.

Like with most injuries, the Broncos will be looking for the next man up at the linebacker position. Second-year linebacker Levelle Bailey seems like a strong candidate to make the team now, but UDFA’s Karene Reid, JB Brown, and Jordan Turner will be pushing him for a roster spot. We’ll see how it shakes out and will be something to watch over the next days and weeks ahead.

Sean Payton dropped some big news during the Broncos post practice press conference.

Sean Payton broke some news during the Broncos' post-practice training camp press conference. He was asked about Courtland Sutton’s lack of participation in team drills and told reporters that he believes the two sides are close to working out a new contract.

He states that something could get done at some point today.

News and notes for Day 4 of Broncos Camp

Day 4 of Broncos Camp has concluded, marking their second consecutive padded practice. They have six straight practices this week, starting on Monday, so they are officially in the dog days of training camp.

Surprise! This Denver Broncos defense is damn good and won the day once again today. They brought the heat all day, and the offenses struggled to do much against them. In today’s write-up, we will discuss the dominant Broncos defense, rookie running back R.J. Harvey receiving praise from Sean Payton, Courtland Sutton also receiving hype from Payton, and potential breakout star, linebacker Levelle Bailey.

Defense dominates

The Broncos' defense led the NFL in sacks last season and had the AP Defensive Player of the Year Award winner in their secondary. Since then, they re-signed their nose tackle D.J. Jones, signed stud linebacker Dre Greenlaw, and signed physical safety Talanoa Hufanga to improve their already strong secondary.

They didn’t stop there. In the first round of April’s 2025 NFL Draft, they selected cornerback Jahdae Barron with their 20th overall selection. The Broncos' defense was already a strength of this team, and with these additions, they’re now in elite status. So, it should be no surprise that the Broncos' defense has been dominating early in Broncos Camp.

Denver’s defense dominated the day.

Pressure was constantly there, forcing Bo Nix to scramble many times and throw the ball away.

Broncos’ front 7 seven also very stout against the run.

Denver’s D continues to prove how good they can be.

— Zac Stevens (@ZacStevensDNVR) July 29, 2025

Based on reports, the offenses struggled to do much during today’s practice. The pass rush was relentless, the coverage was sticky, and there was little room to run. After practice, Sean Payton was asked about this, and he thinks there is that “iron sharpens iron” happening right now.

“I think there’s that iron sharpens iron. I just finished talking about these physical practices, and the necessity of what we’re building and how we go about doing it. I think it’s fantastic because it’s a back and forth. There are going to be some days coming off this field that you guys will feel like one side of the ball, maybe, and that’s the ebb and flow of a training camp. That competition, not only offense and defense, but the competition within the position groups, will bring us to a higher level.”

Practicing against a defensive unit that is expected to be a top-ranked defense this season will only make Bo Nix and the Broncos offense better in the long run. Come the regular season, the Broncos are not going to see many, if any, defenses this good, which should benefit the offense.

Keep in mind, defenses always have the advantage early in camp, but this Broncos defense looks legit. The offense will need to start punching back, and I believe they will, but we’ll certainly see iron sharpen iron during training camp.

Sean Payton hypes up R.J. Harvey

Before the pads came on, Head Coach Sean Payton told reporters that he was anxious to see how the Broncos' running backs would look. Well, after two padded practices, the Broncos' Head Coach seems pretty impressed with his rookie running back.

“He had a run today that was something”

Sean Payton PRAISED rookie RB RJ Harvey’s excellent day of training camp pic.twitter.com/AD7TPKnLu1

— DNVR Broncos (@DNVR_Broncos) July 29, 2025

After today’s practice, Sean Payton told reporters that rookie running back R.J. Harvey is doing “exceptional” and was turning some heads during today’s practice.

“He had a run today that was something, and we kind of turned and looked at each other. There’s that learning curve for all of those young players, and some of it, it happens a little quicker maybe than others, but he’s doing exceptional.”

The play Payton is referencing was a run play to the left that was immediately blown up, and Harvey cut back to the right, showed off his speed, and turned a negative play into a 10 or 15+ yard gain. After the play, Payton said he turned and looked at his other coaches, and they were just impressed by the play he made.

This sort of play would not have happened last season and would have ended as a negative gain. Payton was asked about needing more explosive plays from the running game, and he told reporters that they are going to be “much improved in that area”.

“It’s a great question, and we have to be more explosive in that area. So we first look at ourselves, the scheme, and are we doing it the way we want to. Then we’re looking at who are we asking to do it with. Obviously we’ve added some players in the running back room, and we’re going to be much improved in that area.”

Harvey will be the main man when it comes to these explosive plays. He is a home run threat whenever he has the ball in his hands; he has elite explosiveness and the speed to outrun defenders. You saw it throughout his college tape, and I believe we’ll see it even more with the Broncos. Veteran J.K. Dobbins will bring his share of explosive plays as well. While he may not break off the long explosive run like Harvey, he can scamper for a big 10 or 20-yard gain if there’s an open lane. The Broncos lacked that threat last season, and it appears Payton is confident that his running back room is improved.

Sean Payton talks about Courtland Sutton

It was announced yesterday that the Denver Broncos have signed wide receiver Courtland Sutton to a four-year, $92 million dollar extension. This deal would keep the quarterback Bo Nix’s number one receiver with the team for the foreseeable future.

After today’s practice, Head Coach Sean Payton was asked about Sutton’s extension, and he ended up singing the praises of his veteran wide receiver.

Sean Payton on what the Courtland Sutton extension means to him:

“He epitomizes what we’re looking for” pic.twitter.com/63oG68DNa3

— DNVR Broncos (@DNVR_Broncos) July 29, 2025

Payton was asked what Courtland Sutton means to this team. He told reporters that he’s a captain and mentioned how the young receivers watch his preparation and work ethic. He continued by saying that Sutton is “everything you want in a pro”.

“He’s one of those guys. He’s been a captain. If he didn’t say a word, the young guys watch his preparation and his work ethic. Yet obviously his experience with all of those players. It really starts with his preparation in [the building] here, on to the field. He’s everything you want in a pro.”

Another big part of the Sutton extension was keeping Bo Nix’s number one target in the building. Payton was asked about how Sutton helped Nix’s development last season, and he told reporters Sutton was a consistent player for him out there. On top of that, he called Sutton smart, tough, and reliable, mentioned how he excels in a number of areas, and repeated that they’re getting a leader in Sutton.

“Well as the split end, there was a consistent player there for him [QB Bo Nix]. We weren’t developing the quarterback as well as developing a new split end. I think not only the timing, but there’s a confidence, there’s all those things that go into his targets, his targets when covered, third down, a lot of things. But overall, separating all the nuances from it, we’re getting a player who’s still young. He’s smart, he’s tough, he’s reliable. He excels in a number of areas, and again, we’re getting a leader.”

The deal he signed is fairly team-friendly while also giving Sutton the payday he deserves. Obviously, we know the type of player he is on the field, but who he is in the locker room and behind the scenes is important as well. He’s a contributor on the football field and a leader in that locker room.

Levelle Bailey is a name to watch

With Drew Sanders sidelined for a while and now Alex Singleton down for a week, second-year linebacker Levelle Bailey is the next man up. He started today alongside Dre Greenlaw and has a real opportunity to earn a roster spot and potentially even a role in the Broncos' defense.

Levelle Bailey has had a few “real good days,” per Sean Payton.

“He looks like an NFL linebacker too”

— Zac Stevens (@ZacStevensDNVR) July 29, 2025

Payton was asked about Bailey after today’s practice, and he told reporters that he has had a “few good days” before correcting himself and saying “real good days”. He mentions how Bailey has more confidence in his second year and how he is in really good shape. Payton told reporters that Bailey “looks like an NFL linebacker”. and that he has clearly seen a jump from year 1 to year 2 with his confidence.

“He’s had a few good days. Real good days. I think you’re getting a player into his second year with confidence. He’s in good shape. He looks like an NFL linebacker too. It’s funny because I can recall these stories of post-draft conversations and like an hour recruitment of him. You’ll have that happen with a number of players, and then a couple might go somewhere else. Then you’re pulling out all stops, and I’m glad we stayed patient in that process with him and we were able to get him because there were a number of teams interested. I would say I’ve clearly seen a jump from Year 1 to Year 2 in his confidence.”

If Bailey continues to string together good practices, he could earn himself a role in the Broncos' defense. Coming out of college, he was known for his coverage ability but had questions about playing between the tackles. Well, with the way the linebacker room is shaking out, he could see some snaps on third down.

Alex Singleton is coming off a torn ACL and is known more as a run-and-tackle type of linebacker instead of a coverage guy. So, we could see him come off the field on third downs and see them bring in Bailey, who is better in coverage.

I’m just theorizing right now, and Bailey has to continue to prove himself, but that’s probably the best avenue for him to see consistent snaps early on.

Notable Quotes

HC Sean Payton on developing TE Caleb Lohner

“That’s a great question. I think a lot of that is predicated on how much can he digest, and how he’s doing it. I don’t want to ever set the ideal plan because I had a plan I thought for [RB] Jaleel [McLaughlin], and he exceeded it, and we were never going to get him to the practice squad three years ago. So a lot of it is let’s pay attention to this progress early on, and then let’s build on it. But let’s make sure the things we’re asking him to do early are things we feel like he can excel at early.”

HC Sean Payton on how he will know when the running game is where he wants it to be

“I don’t know, even after Week 1, we better be improving to Week 2 and Week 3. I think we will have an idea at the quarter pole where we’re at. It’s a good question. You go into that first game, and as a head coach, you’re anxious to see what areas excel [and] where do we need growth? I always talk about that first month of the regular season. There’s that race that you’re having with everyone else to improve. I think when we get through those first four weeks, you guys, myself included, will all have a better feel for, ‘This is what we’re seeing now. It looks positive.’ I think that’s something that will be real important.”

HC Sean Payton on what DE Sai’vion Jones has brought so far

“His length, playing at a major college. That transition for some of these players is not as drastic because of where they played. He’s doing well, and we get a lot better evaluation now with these guys with the pads on. He’s one of those guys that, through the OTAs and the on-ramp program, it’s much more difficult to see, but he’s doing well.”

HC Sean Payto on how CB Riley Moss has embraced his position

“We saw it early last year in camp when he was competing for the job. There’s a short memory with him, not being afraid to fail and really putting it out there on the line each play. He really has good length. I’ve talked about his situational awareness. He’s smart, and he can tackle. All the things you’re looking for in a corner. He’s having another real good start to camp. He’s in great shape, and I think he’s got a high ceiling.”

HC Sean Payton on what makes QB Bo Nix difficult to sack

“We get back to the foot athlete. He’s in less conflict, sometimes not as vulnerable because he can move. The quarterbacks maybe that don’t have that foot speed get hit more. I think the processing is very important. That’s the first sign for us of a heavily sacked quarterback, is processing. Then I would say those awkward positions, he throws pretty well from. The off-platform throws, not the orchestrated ones that you see necessarily at the pro days, but literally the slight movement in a pocket throw, the flush to the left and getting your hips around throw. He can deliver the ball in a lot of different areas. So he’s a challenge to get to. I’ve said this before, I think that statistic, that sack statistic, more often than not, is a quarterback statistic than it is an offensive line statistic. I think that we’re not in those minus situations near as much as you could be if he didn’t have that skill set.”

WR Courtland Sutton on signing a contract extension with the Broncos and building a legacy in Denver

“First off, I want to say a lot of thank yous are in are order. I’m very thankful to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, to be able to have this opportunity. To be able to be healthy, to be able to be going into my eighth year in the NFL, and then also to be a part of this amazing organization of the Denver Broncos. This is huge. I have an amazing team in [Agent] Jacob Presser and [Manager] Daniel Gresham who through this whole process were able to figure out the best way to be able to get this joint done. The communication was amazing between us three and ownership, Mr. [Owner & CEO Greg] Penner, Mr. [General Manger] George [Paton], [Vice President of Football Administration] Rich [Hurtado], [Head] Coach [Sean] Payton, the whole nine. The communication was amazing for us to be able to get on the same page with this. I’m just very thankful to the Penner Family and the [Walton-Penner Family] Ownership Group for believing in me, continuing to believe in me, giving me the opportunity to stay here and continue to build the legacy that I’ve had here since 2018. I’m just grateful. I have a heart of gratitude for this opportunity, and I’m just grateful.

“It is legacy, being able to be here, signing the contract. The biggest thing for me was being able to be here and bring back the years that Broncos fans have known. The organization has such a long historic tradition of being successful. You all know that I’ve been here through the thick and the thin. There’s a lot of promise on the other side of the horizon here. To be able to be here and have more years of being able to chase greatness with this great team that we have, and with this great organization, that was one thing I was looking forward to. We have the best fans in football. It’s not a cliché thing to say. It’s one thing that I believe wholeheartedly. I’ve played in almost every NFL stadium, and there’s nothing like Empower Field [at Mile High] and being able to play in front of Broncos Country. I’m just grateful to be able to be here and continue my legacy here.”

WR Courtland Sutton on remaining patient through the extension process

“I knew that things were going to work out the way they were supposed to work out. I knew that we had a great group upstairs that believes in me. I have a great team, like I said, in [Agent] Jacob Presser and [Manager] Daniel Gresham that work diligently. The communication was amazing and there was never a time that we felt like things weren’t going to be able to get done. The communication was there, and we were able to keep moving forward, keep taking steps forward. I had the utmost faith that something was going to get done. The last thing that I wanted to be was a distraction. That’s what I’ve done my entire career, and that’s what I want to continue to do is not be a distraction. How can I do things the best way that I possibly can for this team and for this organization to continue to stay in the light of progress and moving forward? Like I said, the communication was great, and I knew that something was going to eventually get done, and that’s what I had to hold steadfast on.”

WR Courtland Sutto on what it means for Head Coach Sean Payton to rely on his leadership and abilities

“It means a lot. For [Head] Coach [Sean] Payton, someone who’s been around a lot of really great players, for him to see something like that in me, it allows me to know that the things I do on the day-to-day basis aren’t going in vain. It may be the things that the everyday person doesn’t get to see. I try to be the best version of myself I can be, whether it’s on the field or off the field. Whether it goes noticed or unnoticed, I know that those things are things that allow me to be the best version of me. For coach to notice those things, it allows me to have the confidence to continue to try to pursue that greatest and that consistency of greatness. It’s a constant thing even to this point. The contract isn’t the end all, be all. The contract was just allowing me to have that stability to say, ‘Hey you’re going to be here for the next four years, and the things that are possible are still attainable.’ I look forward to chasing those. We’re putting together a great camp over the first week and two days. The guys are hungry. We have great pieces that we’ve added in this offseason, and we have great pieces that we added in the draft and we have great pieces that returned from this past season. The practices have been competitive, the practices have been detailed, and it’s very encouraging to see the direction that the team is already going in such an early stage.”

WR Courland Sutton on his excitement to play with QB Bo Nix

“[QB] Bo [Nix] is my guy. I think I’ve said that since we picked him up last year. Being able to have the conversations that I’ve had with him throughout the offseason and so far throughout training camp, the dude’s mindset, he was already light years ahead of where anybody expected a rookie quarterback to be last year. To have the conversations that we’re having together already, and the things that he sees and the things that are already possible through the first nine days of camp we’ve had so far, it’s promising. I look forward to continuing to watch him grow, continuing to watch his leadership grow, continuing to watch his development at the quarterback position grow. Bo’s a special guy on and off the field, and I tell him all the time even beyond football, he’s a special dude. The way that he thinks, the way that he carries himself, the way that he leads, he’s a special guy. So to be able to share the locker room with him and share the field with him, it’s a special thing. I just look forward to what’s ahead and us continuing to build what we can here.”

News and notes from Day 5 of Broncos Camp

The Broncos finished up Day 5 of training camp earlier today, and it was their third-straight padded practice. It was chippy practice with DT Malcolm Roach and RB J.K. Dobbins going at it throughout the practice, but at the end of the day, the defense dominated once again.

In today’s piece, we have Troy Franklin continuing to impress, linebacker Levelle Bailey is making plays all over the field, and could we see Marvin Mims out of the backfield? We also have news and notes, injury updates, tweets from camp, notable quotes, and more!

Troy Franklin impresses

The trend throughout the offseason and now into training camp has been Troy Franklin impressing. He added some weight/muscle, looks more explosive than he did last season, and seems more confident on the field. Last year, I rarely talked about Franklin in these posts because he never really stood out.

That’s not the case this year and he’s turning that added confidence into results on the practice field.

GREAT one-on-one period for Troy Franklin. TD deep past Barron, beat tight coverage, over the shoulder grab. Later had a catch despite having his jersey grabbed. Another standout was Abrams-Draine, who read Mims’ cut well & stayed with him tightly downfield. Good stuff

— Andrew Mason (@MaseDenver) July 30, 2025

Today, Franklin had a great one-on-one period. He caught a deep pass for a touchdown over rookie corner Jahdae Barron, who had him in tight coverage. He used his size and speed to haul in the touchdown pass over the rookie corner and had a diving contested catch over the middle of the field as well.

After practice, wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr. was asked about Franklin and told reporters that Franklin has grown a lot since last year, and he has been tremendous on the field for them this summer.

“[WR] Troy [Franklin] has grown a lot, and it’s really cool to see it. Last year we had some different things going on and a lot of different people moving different places. Him getting an opportunity was huge for him and just the confidence he started with last year and was able to grow in expecting to know what we need out of him this year. His growth—you guys have seen it—has been tremendous out here on the field.”

All the Broncos' wide receivers have been flashing at times throughout camp, which has shown off their depth at the position.. This unit was at one time considered one of the weaker receiving units in the NFL, and now, it seems like one of the deeper ones that is full of upside.

Mims was asked about the competition in the room, and he mentioned how everyone has been playing well. He continued by saying that the Broncos' depth in the wide receiver room has not been talked about enough and that it’ll be a strength for the team heading into the season.

“I think it’s a great thing. You look at all the guys in our room and how we’ve been playing at camp, for the most part everyone’s looked good. There’s not very many negatives to say. We’re going against a hard defense who’s probably going to be the best defense going into the season. It’s huge for us. Just the depth of our receiver room is something that isn’t talked about enough, and I think it’s a really strong thing for us going into the season.”

Courtland Sutton is back and is your WR1, Mims is coming off a breakout second half, Vele is coming off a solid rookie year, Franklin is impressing so far, rookie Pat Bryant is being heavily targeted and getting 1st team reps, and even Trent Sherfield looks like a player. This room is deep, and suddenly, quarterback Bo Nix is surrounded by talent.

Levelle Bailey continues to stand out

I highlighted Bailey standing out yesterday, and it continued through today’s practice. With Alex Singleton and Drew Sanders sidelined, Bailey continued to see first-team reps alongside Dre Greenlaw in the Broncos' defense, and he impressed once again.

Levelle Bailey had a monster team period against the run just now. Filled the hole and stopped Estime on one run, then shot over to the outside and brought down McLaughlin two plays later. Making the most of his chance.

— Andrew Mason (@MaseDenver) July 30, 2025

When Bailey entered the league, he profiled more as a coverage linebacker than someone who could be a solid run defender. However, after he added some size according to Head Coach Sean Payton, he has suddenly become a player in run defense for the Broncos.

In today’s practice, he was all over the field and had run stops against Audric Estime and even chased down the speedy Jaleel McLaughlin out on the edge.

Bailey has gone from a roster bubble guy, probably on the outside looking in, to looking like a lock to make the roster and maybe even having a role on defense in less than a week. Now, it is still early, and we’re still in the month of July, but Bailey is continuing to turn heads, and I am anxious to see how he looks moving forward.

Marvin Mims out of the backfield?

Marvin Mims had a breakout second half of the year last season, and some of that was due to how he was used in the offense. He wasn’t used like a traditional receiver, but more like a gadget player. He would run deep routes, be used in the screen game, and on top of that, he is a 2x All-Pro return man.

We also saw him line up in the Broncos' backfield at times last season, and when asked if he anticipates doing that more this season, Mims told reporters that he expects to be back there at times this upcoming season.

Marvin Mims does expect to be lined up at RB at times this year. Said it’s cool, but, with a smile, added getting hit by linebackers isn’t necessarily cool

— Zac Stevens (@ZacStevensDNVR) July 30, 2025

He added that getting hit by linebackers isn’t necessarily cool, but he does expect to see time back there.

I would anticipate Mims will be used a lot like he was last season, but with added wrinkles. Reports out of camp indicate his route tree has grown, so hopefully, we see him do more traditional receiver stuff. However, if you can line him up in the backfield and get some of the other receivers on the field at the same time, man, the Broncos could have some serious mismatches.

Notable Quotes

WR/KR Marvin Mims Jr. on the offense’s success last season

“I feel like last year we were throwing a lot of different looks at defenses we were playing. I feel like it helped the offense a lot. I think we were playable, and then you add [RB] RJ Harvey, [TE] Evan Engram to the mix too. There are all types of different formations and stuff we can go into with the new players and the strengths we have as a team, so I think it could be really doable this season.”

WR/KR Marvin Mims Jr. on if he thinks he will see a higher volume of return opportunities with the kickoff rule change

“Yes, for sure. At the end of the day, it’s up to the kickoff team. With me back there and whoever’s going to be out there next to me, if they kick it to a touchback, it goes out to the 35 [-yard line]. Most teams don’t want to give the offense the ball at the 35, and especially give [QB] Bo Nix the ball at the 35. That can be trouble. Should be a huge, major thing for us this year, and we’ll see how it plays out.”

CB Riley Moss on CB Jahdae Barron adjusting to the NFL

“He’s smart. He comes into the training room in terms of recovery stuff. He knows what to do. He’s gotten a routine, which is kind of the biggest learning curve obviously when you come into the NFL, is you have so much time. How are you going to spend that time? And he’s spent that time well, I think, rehabbing and stuff like that and also just picking up the defense. I think he’s smart and he understands where his help is at, and that’s nice too. Having him out there you can trust him, and it helps all of us.”

CB Riley Moss on what he wants to focus on and improve from last year

“I think the point of attack when the ball’s up in the air. Some of those 50/50 balls being stronger, not getting pushed off. That was a big thing for me this offseason was getting bigger, getting stronger, being able to push against the receiver and be a little bit more physical.”

CB Riley Moss on what he has learned playing opposite of CB Pat Surtain II

“As long as I’m across from DPOY, it’s going to be like that, and I love the challenge. It makes it fun. It makes it fun to come in to work knowing it’s on me. I’m going to be on an island, and what can I do? That’s what I think makes this game so beautiful and why I love the position that I’m in.”

2025 Broncos training camp: Day 6 live updates

NFL: Denver Broncos Training Camp

Isaiah J. Downing-Imagn Images

The Denver Broncos have taken the field for Day 6 of publicly open training camp. Join the discussion on today’s happenings here in the comments section.

Welcome to Day 6 of Denver Broncos training camp. We are halfway through a long six-day stretch of cam practices. We’ll be talking about that first preseason game before you know it!

On Wednesday, the two storylines that came out of Broncos camp has been the emergence of second-year wideout Troy Franklin who seems to be getting open and dominating his 1v1s in practice. A significant leap from him would be huge for Denver’s offense. On the other side of the ball, Levelle Bailey continues to turn heads while subbing for Alex Singleton who broke a finger and is out for a little while. He might be a guy who surprises when the final depth chart is fleshed out.

News and notes form Day 6 of Broncos Camp

DENVER BRONCOS

News and notes form Day 6 of Broncos Camp.

Day 6 of Broncos Camp is in the books, and it was a day in the shells (shoulder pads/shorts) after three straight padded practices. They have two more practices this week before a day off on Sunday, before they’ll start preparing for their preseason opener next weekend.

Today, we have an injury scare for linebacker Dre Greenlaw, the offense having a better day, two backup running backs stringing together multiple good practices, injury updates, news and notes, tweets from camp, notable quotes, and more!

Greenlaw Injury Update

Early in practice, linebacker Dre Greenlaw pulled up short in a one-on-one drill and tried to walk off an injury. However, he would later jog to the locker room with trainers trailing him. Obviously, this led to concern and speculation, but according to Head Coach Sean Payton, the Broncos veteran linebacker should be fine.

Sean Payton says he thinks Dre Greenlaw will be alright. Wasn’t his quad. Sean motioned toward his hamstring and said Dre felt it tighten up so they will do all of the testing but he reiterated Dre should be fine. Big sigh of relief. @KOAColorado #Broncos

— Ryan Edwards (@redwardsradio) July 31, 2025

Payton mentioned it was not the same quad injury he suffered in the offseason and said it was more to the hamstring. He indicated that Greenlaw felt it tightened up and that they’ll do all the testing, but again, he should be okay.

“No, I think he’s fine. In the one-on-one period, he felt it got tight, a different area, and so we’ll know more. We’ll go ahead and have all the precautionary work done, but I think he’ll be all right.”

The Broncos dodged a bullet.

Greenlaw has looked excellent in camp, is in great shape, and they have suffered multiple injuries to the linebacker position already. Now, Greenlaw will likely miss some time due to this soft tissue injury, but it won’t be the end of the world.

This will mean more significant snaps for linebacker Levelle Bailey, Justin Strnad, and others. Payton told reporters that giving these players extra snaps is important because you do not want to see a player you let go excel elsewhere.

“I don’t think, well, and I say this respectfully… I read somewhere where it was like injury plague. [ILB] Alex [Singleton] is back here in six days. So I think obviously other guys step up and get those reps, but knock on wood, fortunately, we’ve been good here during this camp, but it gives us a chance to evaluate other players. And so you’re seeing [ILB Levelle] Bailey, you’re seeing the reps. [ILB Justin] Strnad obviously had a ton of work, but you do get a chance. And throughout these drills, we’re trying to rotate it enough so that we are getting the proper evaluation on these younger players, which is important. Our biggest fear would be that someone leaves here and ends up excelling somewhere else. And so we want to make sure we don’t let that happen.”

With Greenlaw, Singelton, and Sanders sidelined for at least the short term, these young players will have an opportunity to prove themselves to the Broncos coaches. Bailey already has and could continue his ascension up the depth chart and potentially into having a role on the Broncos' defense.

Offense Strikes Back

After the defense dominated the first handful of padded practices, the Broncos' offense had a better day during today’s practice in shells.

Team Red Zone…

Bo Nix hits Courtland Sutton for a 10-yard TD and then boots to the right to find RJ Harvey for a 5 yard TD in the front corner of the end zone.

Jarrett Stidham pass to Adam Trautman for a walk in TD from about 12 yards out and then connects with Pat Bryant for…

— Ryan Edwards (@redwardsradio) July 31, 2025

During the red zone period to end practice, Bo Nix found wide receiver Courtland Sutton for a 10-yard touchdown pass, followed by finding rookie running back R.J. Harvey in the corner of the end zone for a 5-yard touchdown. Earlier in the practice, Nix would hit rookie wide receiver Pat Bryant for a 25-yard pass on 3rd and 4. He would then find tight end Evan Engram, who will be a big part of this offense, for a short gain. Nix also had two touchdown passes to wide receiver Marvin Mims and tight end Caleb Lohner during the 7-on-7 drill at the beginning of practice.

It was not a fully padded practice, but still good to see the offense have some success after the defense had been the winners the last few days. On Saturday, the team will have a practice with more of a scrimmage format and that will be a true test for both sides of the team.

If you recall, a year ago on this Saturday, we set up a much different type of practice, and it’s kind of a scrimmage format, and yet we’ll mix who’s going against who. And even within the rotations, if you’re really watching, these receivers might be taking reps with the second wave, and they may be taking reps with the first wave just based on the routes that were just running and getting. So it’s a little bit easier to keep track of if you’re looking at the offensive line or if you’re looking at the defensive front. But we’ll try to mix that up, and Saturday will be a day where you’ll see that change a little.”

That will probably be the most noteworthy practice they have prior to the joint practices prior to their preseason games. So, we’ll see who stands and who doesn’t.

Estime and Watson Impressing

All eyes are on J.K. Dobbins and R.J. Harvey, but the Broncos' depth at running back has been standing out in recent practices. Both Audric Estime and Blake Watson have had solid practices lately and are pushing for a spot on the Broncos' 53-man roster.

Sean Payton said a lot will go into how many running backs Broncos keep. Mentioned how Estime and Watson had very good days yesterday in pads.

— Chris Tomasson (@christomasson) July 31, 2025

After practice, Payton was asked how the running backs have looked thus far through camp and he singled out both Estime and Watson as players who have stood out recently,

“They had a real good day yesterday. Good question. I mean look, a lot will go into it. How many are you keeping? Practice squad? [RB Tyler] Badie had some real good work. And obviously [RB] Jaleel [McLaughlin], so I think I said this at the start of camp from experience, a lot of that stuff will sort itself out and I think I said this, when we finish playing New Orleans, we’ll have a better idea of how that’s going and you’ll have seen more evidence in the games, the joint practices. All of this stuff matters. Yesterday was one of the better days for some of those guys, and you brought up two of them, and [RB] Blake [Watson] had two or three exceptional runs. [RB] Audric [Estime] was stacked a couple of days. So it will be the body of work.”

He stated that Watson had two or three exceptional runs on Wednesday, while Estime had stacked a couple of good practices. Both need strong camps if they want to make the team, so that is good to see.

With that said, he also praised Tyler Badie and Jaleel McLaughlin seems like the favorite for the RB3 job right now, so we’ll have to see how things shake out moving forward.

Notable Quotes

HC Sean Payton on how pleased he has been with the team’s energy, and if the focus matches the energy

“I just said this to them, there are certain goals you have as a team, and there appears to be the right mix of youth and then some veteran leadership, and all 32 teams start the season with the same aspirations and goals. So what separates yourself from those other teams? I think it’s those ingredients, and it gets back to who we’re bringing in, who we’ve drafted, and you’re finding guys that want to play at a high level, and they understand that it’s not easy to do. We can write down our goals and dreams, and we can recite them, and then you have to live them. I think I’ve been encouraged relative to the leadership and the direction following last season, a lot of young guys played, and I’ve said this before, I like this team.

HC Sean Payton o how the vision for RB Jaleel McLaughlin is evolving

“I think he [RB Jaleel McLaughlin] continues to work on the passing game element relative to what he does. I think he’s a change-of-pace runner. He’s got really good quickness and agility. You don’t get to appreciate him until it’s tackle, and then you appreciate him because he didn’t get tackled. It’s a little harder. I can remember the first time in San Francisco where we’re thinking this is going to be a good young practice squad developmental back, and a hundred some yards later. He’s not going to get to any practice squad. So I think you appreciate, and it gets back to that position, you get to see a little bit more when it’s tackle and their yards after contact. How do they go down all those other things.”

HC Sean Payton on how unique DL Zach Allen’s versatility is

“I think it’s a strength. I am not making the comparison relative to the positions they play. [Saints DE] Cam Jordan plays a different position, but Cam had the unique ability on play 72, it looked like play eight. And I’d say [DL] Zach [Allen] has that stamina and that cardio where he’s in great shape. But when you look at the tape, it’s hard to play on the offensive and defensive front, especially the defensive front. A lot of snaps like that, and it’s one of his strengths and the versatility.”

Sean Payton on how he feels about the new kick-off rule

“I think I was in favor of the 35, and because I think there were teams still taking the approach that we will defend the 30-yard line as a starting point. The kickoffs and the play itself and the returns spike way up regardless. So yeah, I think that it’s hard as a coach to say, I’m comfortable with them starting on the 35-yard line. I’m going to want to defend that field position. I think it benefits us based on our talent, our returners and our coaching. We feel like we’ll benefit from that, and we’re all a little bit smarter or more experienced relative to how those returns begin to look from this time last year.”

NT D.J. Jones on the defensive line strengthening its depth

“Bringing him [DL John Franklin-Myers] was the last piece of the puzzle. We have myself, [DL] Zach Allen, [DL] John Franklin-Myers–as he likes to be called—[DT] [Malcom] Roach is the sixth man of the year. It’s a group that I don’t think anyone would not want to be on. I love coming to work every day just being with them.”

NT D.J. Jones on what DT Malcom Roach brings to the field

“I don’t talk much. I don’t talk when I’m on the field, but he [DT Malcom Roach] gets me going. Whether it’s just communication of the play or just chirping someone else and it fires me up and gets me going. I’m ready to go regardless but there are different levels to it. He brings it for everybody.”

TE Adam Trautman on how Head Coach Sean Payton builds a successful roster

“I think the biggest thing was yesterday’s practice. I’ve felt it before here, but that was like, ‘Oh yes. We’re ready for this.’ All the expectations and everything. Yesterday’s practice was the best practice I’ve been a part of in my three years here and that’s ever since [Head Coach] Sean [Payton] got here. I think we are trending in the absolute right direction and guys are completely bought in. Obviously right now we’re going through the grind of it, especially with six [practice days] in a row here. Guys are bought in and we’re ready to go.”

TE Adam Trautman on TE Caleb Lohner’s development

“I definitely know the… This isn’t arrogant, but I know the offense the best in our room. I’ve been in it my entire career. So generally I’m the guy that people come to to ask questions about certain plays. I’ve helped him a lot. He’s very curious. Obviously he hasn’t played much football. That’s real. That’s not shade, he just hasn’t. He’s asking the right questions, participating in meetings really well. He has flashes of things and you’re like, ‘Wow, that’s pretty darn good.’ So it’s just getting him to do it consistently. Obviously he’s super young, and he’s brand new to football for the most part. He’s coming along really well.”

TE Adam Trautman on the run game

“We’ve tweaked some things. I think we’ve always wanted to be kind of an outside zone team and we’re just kind of committing to it. All the backs—it’s not just the new guys—everyone’s doing a really good job. [RB] J.K. [Dobbins] brings some stuff to him. It’s really awesome to see. [RB] RJ [Harvey] is doing really well, [RB] Audric [Estime], [RB] Jaleel [McLaughlin], ‘T.B.’ (RB Tyler Badie), [RB] Blake [Watson], everybody. That room’s going to be exciting.”

This year, the Broncos will do something they haven’t done in over a decade

Denver Broncos Training Camp

Photo by Andy Cross/MediaNews Group/The Denver Post via Getty Images

The Broncos finally have continuity and stability at their two biggest leadership positions.

This is set to be a big year for both Bo Nix and the Denver Broncos. Not just because Nix finished top three in Rookie of the Year voting and the Broncos made the playoffs for the first time in eight years.

But also, because this will be the first time in over a decade that Denver has returned both their starting quarterback and head coach from the previous season.

It’s a stat that almost must be seen to believe.

  • 2014 Fox/Manning
  • 2015 Kubiak/Manning
  • 2016 Kubiak/Siemian
  • 2017 Joseph/Siemian
  • 2018 Joseph/Keenum
  • 2019 Fangio/Flacco
  • 2020 Fangio/Lock
  • 2021 Fangio/Bridgewater
  • 2022 Hackett/Wilson
  • 2023 Payton/Wilson
  • 2024 Payton/Nix
  • 2025 Payton/Nix

Ever since John Fox and Peyton Manning returned in the 2014 season, the Broncos have been onboarding either a new head coach or a new quarterback (sometimes both) heading into the season.

It’s not a coincidence that Denver’s record and performance has been as rocky and sputtered along under .500 for most of that stretch.

Just listen to how Bo Nix and Sean Payton talk about coming back into the same situation and how valuable continuity is – something Bo hasn’t had in his career since high school.

“It’s huge,” Nix said during OTAs. “It’s kind of weird going back to the first install, it’s not new verbiage and not new things. It made it a lot easier this year. Now, it was tough to learn it last year but being in a system and getting right back to where we were, just being able to call plays and understanding what it’s like — going longer than 365 days just hearing the same thing, I think it’s going to be really beneficial.

“Honestly, it felt weird because it hasn’t been since high school. I’m just used to learning different things, so it’s good not to have to learn an entire new system this year and have the same play caller and have the same quarterback coach. [Also], the same guys you’re throwing it to. The same center and the same line. Being the same, it’s going to be — it’s hard to even explain. You’re going to see it in ways that you can’t even understand. It’s just a natural thing to go out there and just pick up right where you left off and not have to restart.”

Sean Payton has noticed as well, saying that Bo looks just that much more comfortable today than this time last year, and it shows with how he operates in the huddle and with teammates.

So, we know continuity is something Payton and Nix recognize and value, but just how valuable is it historically in the NFL?

Since 2000, there have only been two teams who haven’t had a returning head coach and still won the Super Bowl, the 2002 Buccaneers with Jon Gruden and 2015 Denver Broncos with Gary Kubiak. Aside from a few dark horse examples like Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson and Nick Foles, or stars switching teams like Brady and Stafford, the Super Bowl winning quarterbacks of the last 25 years have been established starters paired with their head coach for multiple seasons: Belichick & Brady, Dungy & P. Manning, Payton & Brees, Coughlin & E. Manning, McCarthy & Rodgers, Harbaugh & Flacco, Carroll & Wilson, Reid & Mahomes, and recently Sirianni & Hurts.

Having head coach/quarterback obviously doesn’t guarantee success as an organization, but it’s essentially table stakes to being successful in the NFL. Having stability and continuity at those two positions allows the team to build around them and establish a culture and system that highlights their mutual strengths.

And with a young quarterback, stability and continuity is almost mandatory for them to succeed. Look across the league at the young quarterbacks of the last ten years who have risen to the top. Mahomes is the best example. He and Reid have been joined at the hip since being drafted and we all know too painfully how that has played out for Kansas City. But he’s not the only one.

John Harbaugh’s steady hand in Baltimore has allowed Lamar Jackson to thrive. Josh Allen has had Sean McDermott his entire career. Joe Burrow and Zac Taylor in Cincinnati have been together since the beginning and made a Super Bowl. Speaking of Super Bowls, Jalen Hurts has undoubtedly benefitted from Nick Sirianni’s stability and team building.

Even further back a few years, guys like Cam Newton with Ron Rivera, Russell Wilson with Pete Carroll, and Dak Prescott with Jason Garrett had the luxury of multiple seasons in lockstep with their head coach.

Contrast that with guys like Baker Mayfield and Justin Herbert who clearly have talent but have had bumpy starts to their career with multiple head coaches cycling through. Now you could argue it’s a self-reinforcing cycle and these two positions’ fates are inextricably linked. As long as they’re winning, of course they stay together. Conversely, we see plenty of QBs get their coaches fired for not playing well.

While there may be some truth to that, I think the evidence both historically and anecdotally point to a simple fact. It’s hard to build a consistent Super Bowl contender while playing merry-go-round with the two most impactful leaders on the team. A lesson Denver has learned the hard way, and I pray to the football gods one they don’t have to learn again for a very very long time.

Trent Sherfield Sr. is battling it out for the Broncos’ sixth and final spot at wide receiver

Denver Broncos Training Camp

Trent Sherfield Sr.’s experience and ability on special teams should help him earn the sixth and final spot at wide receiver for the Denver Broncos.

The Denver Broncos have a talented group of wide receivers. If they all improve and show growth and development from last season, they have the potential to make a huge impact for the upcoming 2025 season.

The leader is longtime veteran Courtland Sutton. He will be the team’s top target again this coming season. However, the team boasts a handful of players that are competing hard to earning more target share in the team’s aerial attack. Alongside Sutton, Marvin Mims Jr., Troy Franklin, Devaughn Vele, and Pat Bryant will round out the team’s top five at the position.

If the Broncos opt to follow last year’s roster building formula on their final 53-man roster, a sixth spot will be allocated for a receiver. That spot will be earned by someone who has extensive special teams' experience. During this year’s free agency period, the Broncos signed a wide receiver Trent Sherfield Sr. to a two-year, $6 million dollar deal with $3.25 million guaranteed.

Over the past seven seasons, Sherfield has logged over 3,300 snaps between offense and special teams. While he hasn’t made a huge impact on offense, he has been a steady contributor and lauded for his ability in the game’s third phase—a big reason why I believe he will earn the last roster spot at wide receiver.

On This Day In 2022:

Player Profile

Age: 29 | Experience: Eighth Year | College: Vanderbilt | Height: 6’1” | Weight: 206 pounds

Arm Length: 31-7/8” | Hand Size: 9-5/8” | Broad: 10’5” | Vertical: 32.5” | Bench: 19 reps

40-yard dash: 4.45 seconds | 20-Yard Shuttle: 4.20 seconds | 3-Cone: 6.90 seconds

Trent Sherfield’s 2025 outlook with the Broncos

The Broncos are the sixth different team Sherfield will have suited up for. With Tremon Smith heading to the Houston Texans in free agency, I believe Sherfield is the player to watch to replace him as the main gunner on special teams.

Since being drafted out of Vanderbilt in the 2018 NFL Draft, the veteran wider receiver has appeared in 112 games with 11 starts. In his career to date, he has hauled in 86 receptions for 1,013 yards and six touchdowns. Overall, he has played 2,126 snaps on offense and 1,252 snaps on special teams.

Sherfield has made some big plays throughout training camp. He caught the eye of Head Coach Sean Payton, who recently praised him for his performance with the team thus far.

“He’s tough, and he can run. The other thing he can do is block, and so we’ve always had a handful of receivers that can run and stretch the field and when you get one that can do that and then block also, you can set up play action, marries well to the run game. He’s pretty competitive,” stated Payton.

I’m not sure how many offensive snaps to reasonably expect from Sherfield, but the team often utilized Lil’ Jordan Humphrey last season as a big receiver who performed well as a blocker. While I fully expect Sherfield’s largest role to be on special teams, it sounds like Payton believes he can make some contributions offensively as well.

Final Thoughts

When the 53-man roster is finalized, I expect Sutton, Mims Jr., Franklin, Vele, Bryant and Sherfield to be the team’s six wide receivers for the 2025 season. I like the potential of some of the undrafted free agents the team added, but Sherfield has been regarded as a special team’s ace throughout his career and has a lot of pro experience. That’s why I’m giving him the edge over the rest of the players competing for that spot.

News and notes from Day 8 of Broncos Camp.

Day 8 of Broncos Camp has concluded, and it will end the streak of 6 straight practices for the team as they will have an off day tomorrow. Today was scrimmage day, but the Broncos dropped a bomb shell this morning when it was reported that they have agreed to terms on a mega extension with DE Zach Allen. He joins veteran WR Courtland Sutton as a key veteran starter who received a contract extension from the Broncos this week.

In today’s piece, we will cover the Broncos' offense putting up a fight against the defense during the scrimmage, but still falling short in the end. We also heard from Coach Payton and Zach Allen while also having news and notes, injury updates, tweets from camp, quotes, and more!

Scrimmage Notes

During today’s scrimmage, it was a fairly balanced day that saw both the offense and defense make plays. This is coming off a practice where the Broncos' defense dominated, so it was nice to see Bo Nix and the offense bounce back a bit in this one.

Bo Nix bounced back today after two INTs yesterday.

Started off with a no-look side-arm across-his-body pass to Devaughn Vele. Also hit Troy Franklin for 20.

Second period was slower, including an INT by Pat Surtain and a PBU by Riley Moss.

But bounced back quickly with a…

— Zac Stevens (@ZacStevensDNVR) August 2, 2025

As Zac notes above, Nix started the first team period out with a completion to Vele over the middle of the field and then hit Troy Franklin for a 15-20 yard gain with Pat Surtain II in coverage. Seeing Franklin make plays against PS2 should be a huge confidence builder for him and a sign he’s moving up the pecking order a little bit. Later in the period, Bo would hit Trent Sherfield for a decent gain as well.

During the second team period, the defense flexed its muscle. Corner Riley Moss, who is having an excellent camp per reports, had a near INT and PBU vs. Marvin Mims, followed by a Surtain INT of Nix. There was also an Engram drop as well as a fumbled snap that was recovered by Jonah Elliss.

In the third team period, the defense was stiff against the pass until the final play of the period, where Nix threw a beautiful pass to Sutton with Surtain II in coverage for a touchdown. Even against PS2, Sutton wins these 50/50 balls in the end zone.

The final team period was a move-the-ball period in a two-minute drill scenario. The first play was a false start, but they would bounce back with a 10-yard pass to Vele. Later in the drive, he would hit Marvin Mims for 15 yards in the middle of the field to extend the drive. On the final play, he would hit Troy Franklin in the end zone, but he could not come down with it, and the offense would lose the period. He has had a great camp, but that’s a play he needs to make.

After this practice, Head Coach Sean Payton said he was pleased with what he saw from today’s scrimmage.

“Just real quick, a couple of notes. Obviously the practice format was different. We got a lot of situational work done. We’ll look at the tape. I always think it’s good when you get out of your normal routine. 10, 15 years ago, the [Pro Football] Hall of Fame weekend, Saturday was a live scrimmage for most teams. I think we can get the same work done, it’s full go, but we’re keeping them up. Much like a game, we’re integrating the special teams throughout. I just think that’s more realistic to what happens in a game than just segmented periods. So overall, I was pleased. Most importantly, with the operation in and out on time, the right amount of guys on the field. There’ll be a number of things we have to clean up. And the good news is we have a month still before we get going. So yes, I was pleased overall.”

Overall, it seemed like the most balanced practice from both sides of the ball, where each side made some plays. In the end, the defense still had the edge, but it wasn’t nearly as dominant as in previous practices.

The team will have a day off before having a practice on Monday, where they will begin preparing for their preseason opener vs. the 49ers.

Zach Allen Speaks

It was announced earlier in the day that the Broncos have signed DE Zach Allen to a four-year, $102 million dollar extension. This is a mega deal for one of the Broncos' top players on the team and currently makes him the highest-paid player on the roster.

This was a much-deserved deal, and Allen will be a force in the middle of the Broncos' defense for years to come.

Here to stay!

— Denver Broncos (@Broncos) August 2, 2025

After practice, Head Coach Sean Payton was asked about Allen’s extension had some significant praise for the Broncos' highly paid defender. He told reporters that he was excited for him and talked about how he and Allen had talked about the deal nearing completion earlier in the week.

“I’m excited for him [DL Zach Allen]. We were just talking about it. You get an exceptional player also with the make-up, much like [WR] Courtland [Sutton]. It was getting close. It’s always difficult in the beginning, and it never really starts. The next deal done in July will be the first, or May, because there’s no timeline. Then pretty soon you get closer, and there was a gap. Then I don’t really stay in tune to the exactness of it, but I knew we had gotten closer. Two days ago, I said to him, ‘It appears the ships can see each other on the horizon.’ Then I asked him, ‘How long is the horizon?’ His answer bothered me. He said, ‘20 miles.’ It’s eight miles. It’s a credit to both sides. There’s a lot that goes into it. He’s excited, and I think the players genuinely are excited for him when they see that something like that happens. So that’s a good thing for the Broncos.”

Later, Allen spoke to the media right after officially signing his contract and would go on the praise the Broncos ownership group, General Manager George Paton, and Head Coach Sean Payton. He would go on to praise the Broncos' culture and how they handled his and Sutton’s deal the right way, and that they believe in this organization and this team. He would finish by saying that it is really a blessing to be part of the Denver Broncos organization and that today is a great day.

I would have a great day too if I just signed a $102 million dollar contract.

Allen would go on to have a dominant performance during the Broncos scrimmage, where he would get a sack, blow up run plays, and just create the havoc we have grown custom to seeing from him. I always thought Allen receiving an extension from the Broncos was a given, and it’s great to see them get it done early and not let it drag into the regular season or into the offseason.

“He had good numbers. He was a big part of it. You guys said it all the other day, flexibility across the board, productivity, consistency, stamina, all the things that you’re looking for. Periodically, there’s a player that comes up and you say to yourself, ‘If we’re not willing to pay him, then who are we paying?’ I can think [of] that outside linebacker with the Chargers, who was drafted by the Raiders. [Chargers LB] Khalil Mack, was drafted in the first round by the Raiders. Now many of us don’t know him, but the make-up is fantastic, and I’m going back now to when he was younger. Production. What’s difficult for a team to understand is when a player like that leaves, then you’re like, ‘Well, what are we looking for?’ I don’t know. He’s a potential [Pro Football] Hall of Fame player with great make-up, leadership, and a rare skillset at a position that’s hard to find. So it’s never easy for either side. There’s always that early period. I think the most important thing that we have to have as a program is trust. The players have to trust in our training room, in our coaching staff, in our gameplan, and trust in why we’re doing a 9-on-7 drill instead of not being in pads. We can show them why. You can’t B.S. that stuff. I think that again, it’s just a credit to both sides of the equation throughout.”

Head Coach Sean Payton on how DL Zach Allen has progressed compared to the initial vision he had for him

“It’s a great question. There have been free agents that I’ve signed that you thought you were getting ‘X’. [Saints LB] Demario Davis, we signed I think in the third week or fourth week of free agency from the Jets to give us another linebacker. Then when he arrived, and as he began to play, and then became a captain. There was so much more that we couldn’t have expected, and you’re like, ‘Man.’. Then sometimes you sign someone and it’s like, ‘Ah.’ I don’t want to use the parallel, but my parents loved garage saling. That was their deal, the one thing they enjoyed together. I think I had 10 couches growing up. So they’d come home with a new couch, and you’d remove the old one, and you were so excited it was a sectional until you sat in the left corner and it wiggled and then you realized why it was a free agent. You just have to really do your homework and spend a lot of time on it. Fortunately we did, and I would say relative to him, more than, ‘This is what we saw, we’re excited to get.’ Then there was this much more. That’s great when that happens.’

Head Coach Sean Payton on how the player personnel department approaches free agency

“The whole process I love here, and that element existed before I got here. I’m talking about the free agents. The process, and then as we begin to implement, ‘What exactly do we value in that process?’ In other words, then it becomes much more select. If you’re not careful, you’re signing a player just to create excitement like the new rollercoaster at an amusement park, but you have them for the year. So they have to meet, and I say this all the time, we’re at a point where we ask ourselves, ‘How will the locker room feel about this player?’ We owe it to the locker room to answer that question, and that’s extremely important.”

HC Sean Payton on OLB Jonah Elliss and OLB Dondrea Tillman

“I think for a large number of these second-year players, there’s such a growth relative to… It first starts with just hearing the call, and getting a line and playing the defense. Then the more that becomes second nature, you can now rely on your instincts to play. If you’re thinking about alignment and assignment, it’s difficult to execute the technique and production. So one of the things as coaches that we always talk about is, ‘Let’s not slow him down with a gameplan. Let’s not make him think.’ I want to be coaching more technique as opposed to what to do. So with those players there in that portion of their career where a year ago it was, ‘Where’s my alignment? Where’s my assignment?’ And we haven’t even snapped the ball yet. The objective still is to defend the ball. So when you can slow it down and all of us the same way, when we know exactly what’s expected on a test, we can take it and execute. Every one of us has been somewhere at some point in our lives where we weren’t quite as prepared and we were scrambling. I think that’s the difference in Year 1 and 2.”

HC Sean Payton on CB Pat Surtain II’s career-high interceptions in 2024

“Sometimes they come. I would say one of the challenges with [CB] Pat [Surtain II], and I talked to him about it, I said, ‘Any time we get one of these elite receivers, man, you’re out there and it’s clinic film.’ Then periodically, there’ll be a guy we don’t even know catch a deep ball on him, and it’s that mental focus of each week. If it’s not an elite receiver, it’s still a capable receiver. So I think you begin to see that discipline, regardless of who he was lined up over. He’s one of those players, the ball kind of finds him, and part of that is his length and his ability to deflect a pass. He’s a rare athlete. I think it helped when we brought in the old timers and one of the guys going into or being recognized, the [Ring of Fame] safety [Steve Foley], you had 44 interceptions. I asked Pat, ‘How many do you have?’ Well if you’re Pat, when you finish here, you want to have the most interceptions. When he heard those numbers, he saw that it was a journey. It was beyond the horizon to get to those numbers. He’s also someone who’ll respond to a challenge from me, I can turn to him and say, ‘How great are we wanting to be?’ I pulled up a clip of a Raider receiver catching, and I don’t even know who the receiver is. He’s extremely coachable. He wants to please. That’s a great trait. I think you become Defensive Player of the Year, and you’re in his echelon. Then there’s, not pressure, but that added expectation of this is the club I’m in, and it’s a difficult club and this is what everyone expects.”

DE Zach Allen on staying focused on football despite going through contract negotiations

“Obviously those conversations are having… But like I said from Day 1, when this whole process started, being here was my happy place. The guys on this team are awesome, everybody from the teammates to the staff to the front office, the way we handled this was just awesome. Like I said, we have very high goals for ourselves, and we know it’s going to take a lot of work to get there. So at the end of the day, no matter what happens, it’s our job and my job to perform at an elite level, and that’s our plan right now. The fact that we were able to go about this the way we have, compared to some other things around the league, it’s kind of a testament to what we’re building here.”

DE Zach Allen on how much Defensive Coordinator Vance Joseph means to him

“I’m forever grateful to [Defensive Coordinator] Vance [Joseph]. He gave me my start in Arizona, and he was a major reason why I came here. So to be able to share these milestones across the way with him has meant a lot. That’s kind of the cool thing about this. Obviously the money’s the money, and everything like that, but to be able to share it with the people that have helped get you here is the coolest thing because it is a status symbol or whatever, it’s kind of where you’re standing in the league is a little bit, it’s a respect thing. To be able to have a guy like Vance believe in me year after year and help me day after day. He’s been incredible and I’m forever grateful of him.”

DE Zach Allen on going through extension talks alongside WR Courtland Sutton

“Courtland was awesome because, like you said, we were both going through similar things. I said it on a podcast this year, Courtland’s one of the greatest people I’ve ever met in my life. I mean… He is an absolute sweetheart, everything. To have a guy like that who’s going through the same thing, bounce ideas, keep you sane with it because there are days where it is kind of tough, but [it] was huge. The fact that we get to spend four more years together is incredible. That’s my guy.”

Bill Belichick lobbies for Mike Shanahan Pro Football Hall of Fame candidacy

2005 AFC Div Playoff: New England Patriots at Denver Broncos

Belichick’s eligible for the HOF in 2026. Likely delaying Shanahan’s HOF bid, Belichick feels Shanahan is worthy.

Good morning, Broncos Country!

The Pro Football Hall of Fame has its latest class of inductees.

Now, we can look ahead to 2026 and specifically whether former Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan will finally be given his due.

Shanahan should have been inducted this past weekend, but he was passed over by the inferior Mike Holmgren, who was rightfully not included in the list of this year’s inductees. Thus, that coaching finalist spot was wasted. Had Shanny been given that finalist spot, he would have been inducted. Way to go, Hall of Fame selection committee. Banner job, as usual.

Looking ahead to 2026, Shanahan is likely going to have to wait another year since Bill Belichick is in his first year of eligibility. Given the change in the Hall of Fame bylaws, a coach only has to be out of the NFL for one year as opposed to the previous five. Since Belichick is considered one of the greatest coaches in league history, if not the greatest, he’s a lock to get inducted.

That means Shanahan will have to wait another year. And it’s a shame. Shanahan should already be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. He’s one of the great coaches in NFL history. His influence on the game is undeniable, and it’s still being felt and seen. Shanahan’s offense revolutionized the game, and nearly half of the league’s offenses still use some form of his system. Not to mention Shanahan is one of just eight head coaches to win back-to-back Super Bowls.

And Belichick agrees. As he said to Athlon Sports recently at ACC football media day, via former Broncos safety Nick Ferguson:

“Well, I think he should (get in the Hall of Fame). I mean, two Super Bowl championships. Mike did a great job. He and Alex Gibbs really developed that zone running game that almost every team in football runs today. It’s not just wins and losses, but I would say his contributions to the game. Obviously, his son Kyle is a great coach in his family.

“But I thought Mike was tremendous. We always had a hard time with defending Mike. Again, I became a better coach having to work against Mike and Mike’s teams. Ya know, it was Denver, and later on, when he went to Washington. I think he should be. A 100 percent, I think he should be in the Hall of Fame.”

Denver Bronco roster review: safety/linebacker Sam Franklin jr.

NFL: Carolina Panthers at New Orleans Saints

Stephen Lew-Imagn Images

Does the special teams ace have a spot on the 2025 roster?

Samuel Lamar Franklin Jr.

Position
: OLB

6-3, 210lb (190cm, 95kg)

Team: Denver Broncos

Born: February 2, 1996 in Crystal River, FL (Age: 29-182d)

College: Temple

In April the Broncos signed nickle LB and special teams ace, Sam Franklin as a free agent. The veteran has spent his entire career prior to this, but he has only started nine games despite appearing in 74 during his career. He has 782 defensive snaps with 289 being his high value in 2023. He has 1327 career special team snaps. He has 105 total tackles in his NFL career by 28 of those are on special teams (punt and KO coverage).

As a large safety he can have a role in short yardage or goalline formations where he doesn’t have to worry about coverage in space which is not his forte. Last season the Braves had three safeties who had 3 or more tackles on punt coverage, Devon Key, Keidron Smith and JL Skinner. The veteran Franklin could easily displace one of those three for 2025.
