Good luck. You're gonna need it Yzerman.

I guess he REALLY wanted to be a GM. He did a good job with Canada at the Olympics. But the Lightning aren't Team Canada...

I can tell for sure from being a Detroit fan that he was very serious about wanting to become a GM, but in Detroit as I said it wasn't gonna happen anytime soon. I am surprised that he went to such a crap organization though to do it as there are much better ones out there in besides the 25th place team in the league. I hope it goes good and several years down the road when Ken Holland does retire Stevie Y will return once again to the Redwings' organization.

I know. The Lightning are..... But I think that was the only team wanting a unexperienced GM. There are experienced GMs out there. But I think he's waiting for the Red Wings GM spot to be free.

Someone with no experience is going to a team where he is going to have to do the most work trying to help the team improve so his job isn't always at risk.
Bad idea, how long do you think they'll give him? lol

2years at least, if not 3. I wish him the best of luck in tough uphill battle he is facing. I think he will succeed and when Ken Holland does retire he will return to Hockeytown an experianced man ready for the pressure that comes with being GM in Detroit. The situation down in Tampa isn't as bad as most think though as he does have good core group to bulid around with Lecavalier, St. Louis, and Stamkos. There are some other guys you can bulid around down there, but those are the ones that that have stayed through thick and thin, except Stamkos who wasn't with the organization when they won the Stanley Cup back in 2006. You guys must remember though that he was the person who replaced Wayne Gretzky as team Canada's GM and was able to assemble a team that took the gold medal in the olympics this year. I know the olympics and the NHL are two totally different things, but all I am saying is he has proved that he can put a wining team together. The situation in Tampa Bay is much worse then the one he had with team Canada, but remember when he came to Detroit 27years ago as a player the Redwings were in a state as bad, if not worse then the one Tampa has. I understand he was a player then, not a GM but trust me he listened and soaked everything in back then. Don't be surprised if you see the Tampa Bay Lightning win Lord Arther's Stanley Cup in a few years.

In the press conference when asked if he would try to lure players from Detroit or guys on other teams that he played with in Detroit or had them for play for him as VP he said he will get permission from the team before talking to them. This is one of many reasons that Steve is by far one of the most classiest people in sports of All-Time. I might be a bit biased being a Wings fan, but most guys would just go after the guys instead of getting permission from the team.

Sorry for the super long reply
