Boston Marathon Explosions

BOSTON -- Boston police say that two people are dead as a result of two explosions near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, and at least 23 more are injured.

Two explosions shattered the finish on Monday, sending authorities out on the course to carry away the injured while stragglers in the 26.2-mile race were rerouted away from the smoking site.

Competitors and race volunteers were crying as they fled the chaos. Bloody spectators were being carried to the medical tent that had been set up to care for fatigued runners.

There were reports of secondary devices found near the scene of the blast. Police set off a "controlled explosion" near the site shortly before 4 p.m., according to multiple media outlets.

"There are a lot of people down," said one man, whose bib No. 17528 identified him as Frank Deruyter of North Carolina. He was not injured, but marathon workers were carrying one woman, who did not appear to be a runner, to the medical area as blood gushed from her leg. A Boston police officer was wheeled from the course with a leg injury that was bleeding.

Really sad news. Made even more sad since the marathon was dedicated to the Sandy Hook victims and families. Terrible.

EDIT: An hour later, a third blast went off near the JFK library in Boston, but no injuries were reported.

EDIT: An hour later, a third blast went off near the JFK library in Boston, but no injuries were reported.

They've since corrected that report about the third blast. According to the JFK Library the "third blast" was an unrelated mechanical room fire.

Such a tragedy. Seeing footage and photos of the attack really do ground you as a person. Thoughts and prayers go out to the those affected.

Absolutely terrible. One of the deaths was a 8 year old boy.

This was terrible news for the city of Boston one of my friends at school had a sister who ran at the marathon who was luckily away from the bombing.

This issue is starting to die down but there will be many cases in court for a very long time to run. Even though I know many runners, luckily done of them ran in the Boston Marathon.
