2024-25 Player Review: Damon Severson… yeah

What happens when you combine a desperate General Manager, fifty million dollars, a mistake-prone offensive defenseman, and said defenseman having his offensive production dry up? You get Damon Severson. Games Played: 70 Goals: 6 Assists: 19 Points: 25 Plus/Minus: +5 PIM: 47 5v5 Corsi %: 49.2% 5v5 Fenwick %: 49.5% 5v5 O-Zone Start %: 49.2% Damon Severson has six years left at…

2024-25 Player Review: Kirill Marchenko’s breakout season

If not for the team’s offensive drought in March, Marchenko certainly would have been a point-per-game player for the first time in his career. Last season, we saw that Marchenko had the potential to establish himself as a legitimate first-line player. This season, we saw it come to fruition. Perhaps he was just ready to pop, or maybe it was Dean Evason or Sean Monahan. Perhaps it was a…

Stanley Cup Final/Offseason Open Thread

Well, we’re finally here: the last series of the 2024-25 NHL season. Ok, we’re not actually here, since for some reason it won’t start until Wednesday, even though both of the conference finals wrapped up last week. WHATEVER. What we have is a rematch of last year’s final, but this time the Edmonton Oilers will have home ice advantage over the defending champion Florida Panthers.

2024-25 Player Review: Elvis was the lead performer

Going into the season it was fair to speculate about who the starter would be at the end of the year. Waddell and Evason spent much of the offseason talking about how Elvis needed to be the starter for the team and spoke optimistically about the work he’d done off the ice. Elvis’ play the past few seasons had dipped, but it was fair to question the quality of the play in front.

2024-25 Player Review: Mikael Pyyhtia proved he can hang in the NHL

Mikael Pyyhtia was drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the fourth round of the 2020 draft, but you would be forgiven for not remembering that mid-COVID event. He broke out shortly thereafter with a 21 goal season in the Finnish top league Liiga in 2021-22. He got a cup of coffee with both Columbus and Cleveland in the next season before coming to North America full time for 2023-24.

2024-25 Player Review: Kent Johnson showed improvement, found chemistry

Despite netting 40 points in 79 games his rookie season in 2022-23, Kent Johnson didn’t have a sophomore slump: he had a sophomore dumpster fire. Last season he missed the team out of training camp, starting in Cleveland, only playing 42 games and registering 16 points, before getting injured in February and missing the rest of the season. This season, with a new coach, GM, and mindset…

Waddell’s Wishlist: The case for and to Mitch Marner

Leading up to the 2025 NHL Draft on June 27-28, we will explore both trade targets and free agent targets that Don Waddell may want to explore in his quest to improve the Blue Jackets for next season. Three years ago, the Columbus Blue Jackets shocked the hockey world by signing the biggest star on the market, coming off his first 100-point season for his longtime Canadian team…

Waddell’s Wishlist: Nikolaj Ehlers is the free agency consolation prize

Leading up to the 2025 NHL Draft on June 27-28, we will explore both trade targets and free agent targets that Don Waddell may want to explore in his quest to improve the Blue Jackets for next season. Yesterday, we covered the top forward on the free agent market, Mitch Marner. While he will be coveted by most teams in the league, not as many can meet his asking price, and he can be picky…

2025 NHL Draft Targets: Defense

If Don Waddell ends up walking to the podium for either pick #14 or #20, he should pick the best available player. With that said, it’s certainly possible the “best available” list could be a bit biased towards a big need, defensemen. This year’s draft isn’t perceived to be as strong as recent years. Additionally, there is little consensus among the various websites that publish rankings.

Pyotr Andreyanov is a Blue Jacket

With the 20th pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, the Columbus Blue Jackets selected Pyotr Andreyanov. This pick was definitely a surprise, as Andreyanov was a name not seen on many draft rankings. The first Russian and first goaltender taken in the draft, he fills the need of a high-end goalie prospect within the organization. Currently playing in the MHL (the junior league of the KHL)…

Columbus selects Jackson Smith with pick 14

After much speculation that the Blue Jackets might trade one or more of their first-round picks, they chose to select Jackson Smith from Tri-City of the WHL. In a touching moment, Meredith Gaudreau was the guest pick announcer for Columbus. She was greeted by a standing ovation and a “Johnny” chant. She thanked the entire hockey community for their support over the last season before…

Blue Jackets massively improve defense by signing Ivan Provorov to a seven-year, $60 million deal

Coming into the offseason, Don Waddell promised to improve this team’s biggest weakness; it’s defensive unit. After seeing no paths to doing so over the next 24 hours, he has instead committed to it for the next seven years. Defenseman Ivan Provorov was reportedly signed to a seven-year deal worth $8,500,000 per year tonight. Big changes coming, folks. Let us know your thoughts…
