Recap #68: Can’t buy a goal

The Columbus Blue Jackets just completed a four game homestand. In 12 regulation periods, they were held to zero goals in 11 of them. Let’s focus on the positives first: tonight was a fantastic defensive effort against a very good (albeit short-handed) Florida team, and the Jackets created 3.62 expected goals on offense. Florida dominated the first period, but the Jackets controlled the flow…

Game Recap #69: They didn’t beat Pittsburgh

The good news is that the Blue Jackets were finally able to get over the goal-scoring hump. The bad news is that it wasn’t enough. After giving up three first-period goals, the early hole they dug themselves was too big to climb out of. A lucky bounce off the boards from a Dewar shot landed right on the stick of Tomasino, who immediately passed it across to Malkin for an easy goal.

Recap #70: Jackets battle back for a shootout win on the island

The Columbus Blue Jackets entered a critical game in the wild card race with some reinforcements in Sean Monahan and Erik Gudbranson. Could they make up ground on the host New York Islanders? Oh yeah, Monahan’s back. Sadly that was about the only thing that went well in the first period. Possession was fairly even early on, but the Islanders completely dominated beginning with…

Are big changes coming?

It’s no secret that there have been ups and downs this season in the back half of the lineup. Some of those struggles have been individual, some as a group. In Aaron Portzline’s Sunday Gathering on The Athletic, Porty threw out an interesting tidbit. “The Blue Jackets are hoping to make significant changes on the blue line for next season, and there could be changes among the goaltenders, too.”…

This season is already a success for the Columbus Blue Jackets

After the highs of the Stadium Series victory on March 1, the mood in Columbus has been understandably soured. The team has gone 2-7-1 in the 10 games since then, with just one regulation win, and their playoff odds per The Athletic’s projections have dropped from 55% on March 4 to 22% now. The Blue Jackets were four points clear of the playoff line and in the first wild card position on March 1…

Recap #71: Jackets win a wild one

Whew, where do I start with this one? The Columbus Blue Jackets won their second shootout game in a row, in a wild 7-6 affair at Nationwide Arena that featured highs and lows on special teams and two different multi-goal comebacks. As Mathieu Olivier said after the game, it was “exciting for the fans…not for the coaches.” It felt like we would be in a for a long night after the…

Recap #71: Jackets snuffed out by Senators, lose 3-2

After going 2-7-1 to start off March, the Jackets looked to finish the month off with their third straight win, and maybe put into motion a race to catch Ottawa for WC1. Unfortunately it was not to be, as the Sens would shut down the Columbus offense for most of the game and win 3-2. The Jackets were dealt a blow shortly before the opening faceoff, as Dante Fabbro would miss this one.

We’re into the final month of the season, and the Blue Jackets were looking to avoid any April Fools shenanigans and bounce back with a win over the Nashville Predators. Here’s how it went down. Recap #74: Jackets Buried by Avalanche

Travel issues for Colorado hindered their travel, could the Jackets jump on them early? Columbus did get a chance almost immediately in this game, but Colorado struck first when MacKinnon did MacKinnon things and beat Elvis five hole. AVS Goal 0-1 Mackinnon (Lehkonen, Toews) 3:25 Jackets responded well, and not long after the opening goal, a Fabbro shot bounced off a net front…
