News Blackhawks Team Notes

USA Goes for Gold, Nazar Honored, a Failed Trade, Canes Can’t Win, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

The United States has not won the gold medal at the IIHF Men’s World Championship in 92 years. Yes, 92 years. But that could end on Sunday afternoon because they’ll play in the championship game against Switzerland. Blackhawks Frank Nazar and Alex Vlasic have appeared in every game for the Americans, and Nazar has had an exceptional tournament (more on that in a moment).

You can watch the US go for gold on NHL Network at 1:20 PM CT. (I will be at my son’s travel baseball tournament so I’ll have to watch on my phone…)

  • Nazar had one assist in the USA’s semifinal win. Entering the gold medal game, Nazar has six goals and six assists in nine game in the tournament. His six goals and 12 points both lead the US squad in the tournament, so it made sense that he was named one of the team’s three best players by the IIHF after the semifinal win. If Nazar needed a big stage coming out party, he’s had one. And I would hope he’s thrown his hat in the ring for the 2026 Winter Olympics as well.

  • Since Brendan Shanahan got canned in Toronto, there’s been a lot of talk about the Maple Leafs’ front office. And one of the moments that’s received the most talk (for some reason) has been the failed trade attempt that would have sent (reportedly) Marc-André Fleury and Brandon Hagel to Toronto for a package that would have reportedly included Matthew Knies. The additional smoke you sensed around that story came from Fleury’s agent, who poked the bear on his podcast.

  • Remember that time, back in the day, when the Carolina Hurricanes could win a game after the conference semifinal round? Yeah, this generation of Canes players can’t, either. Carolina has now lost 15 straight conference final games after another stunning loss on Saturday. Florida scored five consecutive goals to start the third period to blow the doors off the Canes. Final score: 6-2. And the Florida Panthers — with Seth Jones — are now one win away from playing for a Stanley Cup. This would be Florida’s third straight trip to the Cup Final. It will be the first for Jones.
Seth Jones got what he wanted: a trade from the Blackhawks to the Panthers.

Mere months later, he has a chance to get something else he wants: a Stanley Cup.

“My hair is growing back,” he joked.

  • The Western Conference Final is tied 1-1 and moves to Edmonton for Game 3. A reminder: the game begins at 2 PM CT today on ABC or ESPN+.
  • The 2025 NHL Draft Combine is just one week away! It’s back in Buffalo and officially opens its doors next Sunday, June 1.
  • With the draft combine beginning in one week, I’m fascinated to start hearing more about what the New York Islanders might do with the No. 1 pick now that Mathieu Darche is officially their general manager. Will they take the sentimental pick in James Hagens? The “no-brainer” in Matthew Schaefer? The big offensive upside with Michael Misa? Or… is a trade back actually possible?

  • As I reported yesterday, today seems to be the day we’ll learn about the future of the Blackhawks coaching staff. There could be a strong USA vibe on the bench in Chicago soon.
  • Chris Chelios worked with Jeff Blashill in the Detroit organization and was on Mully and Haugh on 670 The Score yesterday. They asked him about the presumed new head coach of the Blackhawks and he had some interesting things to say, including a few comments about the relationship he has with his now-former boss in Tampa, Jon Cooper. This comment stuck out most, though:
“The one thing I thought Blash lacked in [Detroit] was accountability and the physical part of the game,” Chelios said. “But now I think he’s figured that out with Cooper. Veteran guy for sure. Very structured. Hard worker. A super guy and he knows how to relate to those young players, which is something the Hawks really need.”
  • So anyways, the Edmonton Oilers had a 3-1 lead at the end of two periods last night…

  • “That’s the layup” is how Jeff Marek reacted when ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski brought up the idea of Mitch Marner coming to Chicago as an unrestricted free agent this summer. But then the guys talked about whether or not Marner should go somewhere to be “the guy” or if he would fit better as one of a few guys on a good, deep roster.

  • Chris Johnston of The Athletic reported the New York Islanders requested permission to speak with Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan. Sportsnet later reported that the Leafs granted their request. Keep an eye on this one…
  • Darren Dreger reported yesterday that the Seattle Kraken, who were rumored to have strong interest in Blashill, are now moving on to the likes of Mitch Love and David Quinn. Dreger also reported Toronto has granted the Kraken permission to speak with Lane Lambert.
  • David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reported yesterday that former Flyers assistant/interim head coach Brad Shaw is joining the Devils coaching staff.
  • Rightfully, the 4 Nations Face-Off was named the Sports Event of the Year at the Sports Business Journal Sports Business Awards on Wednesday night. It was a magnificent showcase for the game and launched the NHL into a strong second half of the season and — so far — a great start to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

USA Makes History, Nazar, Vlasic, More on Blashill Hire, and Other Blackhawks Memorial Day Bullets

Two Blackhawks players were on the ice Sunday, trying to end a 92-year drought for the United States. Yes, it had been 92 years since the USA won gold at the IIHF Men’s World Championship.

That “How Long Has It Been Since” sign in the USA Hockey Office has been reset to zero now! Thanks to an overtime game-winning goal from Buffalo’s Tage Thompson, the United States won gold. Blackhawks Frank Nazar and Alex Vlasic were on the ice for the Star Spangled Banner to be played with gold medals around their necks, which was awesome to watch this Memorial Day weekend.

  • Vlasic had a solid tournament, starting on the second defensive pair and moving to the third once Zach Werenski joined the roster. He averaged 16:35 per game and was credited with two assists in 10 games.
  • Nazar finished the tournament with 12 points (6 goals, 6 assists) in 10 games. He spent most of the tournament on the right wing, and the most of the knockout round skating on the USA’s second line with Matty Beniers and Thompson. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Nazar threw his name into the mix for the 2026 Winter Olympics at this tournament. His speed was a game-changer, his offense was as good as any on the USA roster and he also killed penalties. If the Blackhawks were hoping to see the same confident Nazar when training camp starts in September, they likely won’t be disappointed if he’s even more confident after this tournament.

  • With the Blackhawks introducing new head coach Jeff Blashill at the United Center tomorrow morning, I saved a few articles about him for the holiday. Here’s a good one to start from Scott Powers at The Athletic with comments from people around the league. Florida Panthers general manager Bill Zito called it a “10-star hire” and went on to say:
“I interacted with him at the World Championships, and he had a way of getting Pat Kane, Quinn Hughes, Anders Lee, all these different style of players and personalities and reach each of them and pull the most out of each of them,” Zito said. “Very, very outstanding technically. Patient. His teams will be prepared, and they’ll feel prepared and they’ll be encouraged. As a manager interacting with him, (he’s) very confident but (has) no ego. To work as a team is a dream come true.”
What people around the NHL are saying about Blackhawks hiring Jeff Blashill as coach ⤵️ https://t.co/pjqz5rheAV

— Scott Powers (@ByScottPowers) May 25, 2025
  • Phil Thompson of the Chicago Tribune wrote about Blashill getting a second chance as a head coach in the NHL, something that has generally seen improvement in the performance of the coach and the record of the team he’s managing. Good comments from our buddy Eddie Olczyk about some other coaches who struggled in their first NHL gig, including Mike Sullivan. Edzo pionts out Sullivan failed in his first try and then spent almost a full decade as an assistant before getting the head coaching job in Pittsburgh.
“Craig Berube, no different,” Olczyk continued. “Second job, he’s become one of the top coaches and wins. After being in Philadelphia, he goes and he becomes a Stanley Cup champion in St Louis (in 2019).

“Bruce Cassidy in Washington — rebuild, young team — whatever didn’t have the success, went down and was (out as a head coach for) 12 years, and all of a sudden he gets a chance in Boston. … He gets them to a Cup Final (in 2019). And here he is on his next job and he’s a Stanley Cup champion (with the Vegas Golden Knights in 2023).”

  • And here’s what Ben Pope wrote for the Chicago Sun-Times about the mixed reaction from Blackhawks fans upon hearing about the hiring of Blashill, and the expectations to see an upward trajectory soon in Chicago.
Everyone knows the Blackhawks have a long climb ahead, but Jeff Blashill will be expected to make that ascent happen faster and steadier than it did — or really didn’t — for the Red Wings.

  • Finally, today is Memorial Day. My family has a long line of service in the military in the US and Britain, and some of my best friends are currently serving or have served. And I have lost a few friends and former teammates in the line of duty. Today, I’m thinking about the family of Gunnar Hotchkin, my teammate on the swim team at Hinsdale Central who lost his life in Afghanistan one week after the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup in 2010.

Blackhawks Captain Nick Foligno Talks About New Head Coach Jeff Blashill

There were two players from the Blackhawks roster seated in the front row for the press conference introducing new head coach Jeff Blashill on Tuesday morning. Captain Nick Foligno and defenseman Connor Murphy were there to hear from their leader.

After the press conference formally broke up, Foligno spoke with us for a few minutes about his initial impressions and the path forward. It was interesting that Foligno noted that Blashill is “inheriting” him as captain.

Foligno said he hadn’t spoken with Blashill much previously and that they’ll get together to break bread this week and get to know each other. He was asked if, as the captain, he would maybe unload his cliff notes of the past couple years on the new head coach to give him some context from a player’s perspective. Foligno countered that question by saying he looks forward to hearing from Blashill and learning more about his approach and what he wants to get done early.

The Blackhawks’ captain also said that, when he started asking around about Blashill when his name came up as a potential hire, he liked what he learned. Blashill is a respected coach, which Foligno said is important.

“He’s really direct, but he’s approachable and he’s a guy that knows what he wants,” Foligno said Tuesday. “I think you appreciate that about a coach. You don’t necessarily need to be best friends with your coach, but you need to know … you can communicate [with him]. And especially in the role that I’m in, but also for our young players, too, you have to have a guy that’s approachable and understands that they might be thinking a different way.”

Blackhawks Culture

One of the things that Foligno said in his exit interviews that got a lot of buzz on the interwebs was when he, again this year, noted that the Blackhawks want/need to have guys on the roster and in the room who are here to be part of the process and see the rebuild thru to the next steps. He was very intentional on Tuesday when he doubled back to those comments when he was asked about Blashill wanting to establish the right culture in the organization.

“It’s hard to commit to this, but we have the guys in the room now that are committed to this and want to see this through.”

Foligno saw how his comments were interpreted, specifically regarding the departures of Seth Jones and Taylor Hall before the trade deadline. He wasn’t necessarily critical of their acceptance of the situation in Chicago, and told us he’s excited they’re still playing.

“Listen, I know maybe you can read between the lines [but] it was never a shot,” Foligno said. “You have to have people that want to be here and you have to have people that are excited about the opportunity they’re going to get to advance this hockey club. And that wasn’t a knock on anyone leaving the door. Those are unbelievable players that left us and it was hard to say goodbye, but I’m thrilled for them now and watching where those guys are at. … [They’re] two good friends of mine, Seth and Taylor Hall, and that’s where they belong.”

Foligno’s a Big Peca Fan

One of the big things I was looking for was the people who will surround Blashill on his coaching staff. When I initially learned Michael Peca would be one of his assistant coaches it excited me because, frankly, he feels like the previous generation’s Nick Foligno. He was a guy who moved around a bit, but he was universally respected for how he played the game and the leadership he brought to the room.

So, when I asked Foligno about Peca being on the new coaching staff, his response didn’t shock me at all. Foligno was a fan of Peca as a player.

“I absolutely loved him,” Foligno said with a smile. “He was one of my favorite players from the Buffalo Sabres when I was a kid. So I’m really thrilled to learn from him. And I think it’s going to be huge for our group. Like [Blashill] said, when you have a guy that maybe he didn’t blow you away in points, but he was known and revered for the way he played the game, that’s a great coach to have — especially if he’s willing to be that guy and instill those little things into our group.”

5 Takeaways from New Blackhawks Head Coach Jeff Blashill’s Introductory Press Conference

The Blackhawks officially, formally introduced new head coach Jeff Blashill on Tuesday morning at the United Center. The presser aired live on the Blackhawks’ YouTube channel and CHSN. If you missed it, I have embedded the video at the bottom of this post.

First, a quick bit of housekeeping. Blashill confirmed that Anders Sorensen will indeed stay on his NHL staff and Michael Peca has already signed on to be one his assistants as well. Jimmy Waite will remain the goaltending coach. And there are a few loose ends they’re still tying up with a final assistant coach for his new staff.

Blackhawks captain Nick Foligno and Connor Murphy were in attendance to hear from their new head coach.

With that being said, here are five things that stood out to me from sitting in the room watching/listening to the press conference this morning.

Avoiding Pitfalls

The biggest thing that grabbed my attention was when Blashill mentioned avoiding some of the pitfalls he experienced during his time as the head coach in Detroit. For those who only look at his won-loss record or who just don’t pay attention to Eastern Conference hockey, Blashill took over at a turbulent time in the Red Wings history.

What he takes away from the moments he experienced there, albeit at an admittedly different stage of a franchise’s timeline, will be valuable in Chicago. That’s the biggest reason to advocate for a head coach getting a second gig after the first run didn’t go as well as anyone hoped. There are mistakes made for the first time because he — the coach — is learning along the way.

Accountability

I’m sure if you got a transcript of the event on Tuesday morning and searched the word accountability, it might show up a dozen times. Players holding players accountable, coaches being able to hold players accountable and having a standard that is expected on a daily basis was something that was stressed not only by Blashill, but general manager Kyle Davidson brought it up as well.

That’s a key word that’s been brought up a lot in recent years with the Blackhawks. I don’t feel there was a lack of accountability under Luke Richardson or even Sorensen for that matter, but perhaps the way the accountability was handled and what players were being expected to do will be different under Blashill. He spoke a lot about establishing a winning culture. We’ve talked about this a lot: this isn’t Richardson being asked to babysit the team bottoming out to jumpstart the rebuild with top-five picks. Growth is now expected.

Working with Stars

Blashill mentioned that he has worked with a lot of “star” players during his time in Detroit and Tampa, and each has a unique approach to reaching their potential. He name-dropped Datsyuk and Zetterberg and Kucherov and Stamkos and Point and Hedman among those who he has coached over the past decade. Not a bad list.

He said there is more to get out of Connor Bedard, but he’ll get there. He also brought up seeing the success enjoyed by Alex Vlasic and Frank Nazar at the Men’s World Championship shows they can take their games to another level as well.

Youth Movement

Finally, Blashill noted that watching the tape back of some of the games at the end of the season and seeing the young players who were impacting the NHL roster was a big selling point.

Based on everything I’ve heard around the league, people are taking notice of the depth and quality of players the Blackhawks have collected in their prospect pipeline. And the way guys like Nazar and Sam Rinzel played at the end of the regular season absolutely got the attention of people around the league.

Learning Curve

I thought it was interesting that Blashill was self aware enough to tell us this morning that spending three years in Tampa made him really ready for this opportunity. If this had come along after his first season in Tampa, he might not have learned as much as he feels he did — and needed to — to be ready to be a head coach again.

Learning from a coach like Jon Cooper is one helluva good place to build from as Blashill begins his second run as an NHL head coach. He’s been friends with Cooper for a long time, but noted he had never coached with him before he joined the staff in Tampa. Over three seasons he learned from Cooper what it takes to build a culture of winning from Day One of training camp.

He also brought up learning what players need to do to put themselves in a position to win a lot at the NHL level from the work ethic and standards that were established on the ice in Tampa.

Setting a championship standard and holding players accountable to that on a daily basis was the theme of the press conference. In September, the work really begins.

Transitioning a pipeline into a winning NHL roster is the tough part. As the cliché reminds us, parades are better than prospects. Blashill’s job now is to turn the rebuild into an elevator that’s going up.

Mike Vellucci to Join Jeff Blashill’s Blackhawks Coaching Staff

As Jeff Blashill’s new coaching staff comes into focus, we’ve learned that Anders Sorensen and Michael Peca will be with him behind the Blackhawks’ bench. Mike Vellucci will also join Blashill’s coaching staff.

New Blackhawks Assistant Coach: Mike Vellucci

Mike Vellucci, 58, had been on Mike Sullivan’s staff in Pittsburgh since the 2020-21 season. I actually profiled him as a potential head coaching candidate for the Blackhawks back in 2022. He led the Charlotte Checkers to a Calder Cup championship in 2019 during one of this three seasons as an AHL head coach. He left the Checkers after two seasons and spent one year as both the head coach and general manager of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, Pittsburgh’s AHL affiliate.

Before the AHL stint, Vellucci spent 13 years as the head coach of the Plymouth Whalers in the OHL. He won a championship with them in 2007. He also won two NAHL championships. Former Blackhawks first-round pick Ryan Hartman played for Vellucci at Plymouth. He also coached the likes of JT Miller, Tyler Seguin, Tom Wilson, Vincent Trocheck, Rickard Rakell, Blackhawks legend James Wisniewski and Connor Carrick in the OHL.

Vellucci was, until Sunday’s gold medal win, on the coaching staff for USA Hockey at the IIHF Men’s World Championship — where he worked with Blackhawks Frank Nazar and Alex Vlasic.

Florida (Again), Chicago’s Strong Staff, Rossi Rumors, CHL Dumps CCM, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

I want to start this morning with a few comments about the Blackhawks’ coaching staff moving forward. First, new Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill was on CHGO yesterday and had a lot of good things to say. This clip the guys shared is a good reminder that, as much as we might want them to hurry up and get better faster, it’s easy to screw up a rebuild.

— CHGO Blackhawks (@CHGO_Blackhawks) May 28, 2025

Blashill has absolutely knocked it out of the park with the crew he has joining him in Chicago. We’ve talked about Michael Peca for a few days now; to me, he was Nick Foligno 20 years ago. Terrific player (two-time Selke winner), great leader, well respected, played the game the right way. He’s worked with young players previously and been in a big market with the Rangers. Smart player turned smart coach. He’s got the chops and a record on the back of his hockey card that earns respect eeeeeemmediately (as Edzo would say).

The addition of Mike Vellucci is another great get for the Blackhawks. I liked his chops enough to profile him three years ago as a potential head coach candidate before the Hawks hired Luke Richardson. He’s won at every level, developed players in the Pittsburgh organization and been on the bench with a terrific coach in Mike Sullivan. Importantly, both Peca and Velluci have worked with superstar players in the NHL. And they’ve been around winners.

Add in Anders Sorensen and the way the players talked about him at the end of the Blackhawks’ season — especially the young guys — and the Blackhawks appear to have a terrific group of coaches to lead the team into the next steps of the building process. If you weren’t initially sold on Blashill being the guy, his staff should bolster your confidence now.

  • Good read here from Scott Powers on why Jon Cooper thinks Blashill is the right guy for the Blackhawks.

  • The Florida Panthers celebrated on the ice in Carolina last night. For the third consecutive year, the Florida Panthers will play in the Stanley Cup Final. For the sixth consecutive year, a team from Florida has won the Eastern Conference. I see a lot of folks — especially in Canada — complaining about the “unfair” advantage the teams in Florida have because there’s no state income tax. My kneejerk reaction to those comments: what was the advantage the Blackhawks and Kings had between 2010 and 2016? Maybe they just have better front offices and coaches and players?
  • The Panthers advancing to the Stanley Cup Final means the Panthers giving up their 2026 first-round pick for Seth Jones and their 2027 first-round pick for Brad Marchand is this much closer to being worth it. Here’s hoping they win another championship this year — and then wind up giving the Blackhawks a pick somewhere in the early 20s next year.

  • An interesting rumor/report here: by now you’ve likely heard/read Marco Rossi may be available this summer as the Wild figure out their long-term financial situation. This report suggests the Blackhawks are at least intrigued by the 23-year-old center. I’m not sprinting to give up assets for a 5-9 forward, even if he’s scored 21 and 24 goals, respectively, in the last two seasons. But Rossi’s a good player. My preference is that he finds a nice new home in the Eastern Conference.
Per @MurphysLaw74 Marco Rossi is very much on the block for the Minnesota Wild, with chatter expected to pick up next week.

Flyers, Sabres, Penguins and Blackhawks are among the teams to have already shown interest, with the field expected to expand. https://t.co/IDQevGjf2j

  • Some fairly big news from the CHL. After years of partnering with CCM, the league(s) are moving on to Under Armour and Bauer beginning with the 2025-26 season. UA will handle jerseys and outfitting; Bauer will handle equipment.
  • The Winnipeg Jets announced their captain, Adam Lowry, had hip surgery on Tuesday. His expected rehab timeline is 5-6 months. Which (counts on fingers) is into the start of the 2025-26 regular season.
  • Another big blow to the Tampa Bay Lightning organization. Blashill left the bench for the Blackhawks. Mathieu Darche left to become the general manager of the New York Islanders. And, now, Stacy Roest has also departed. Roest was the director of player development in Tampa and had been with the club for 12 years. Could he be following Darche to Long Island?
  • The Utah Mammoth locked up a couple prospects who… well, live up to the team’s new name.
Big day for #TusksUp – emphasis on BIG.

They’ve signed 2023 first rounders Dmitri Simashev (6-foot-5 LD) and Daniil But (6-foot-6 RW) to entry-level deals.

Both appear to be #NHL ready after helping Lokomotiv to their first Gagarin Cup win.

Drafted 6th and 12th overall.

— Frank Seravalli (@frank_seravalli) May 28, 2025
  • Finally, happy 12th anniversary to an absolute beauty. One of the biggest, greatest, most significant shots in the history of the Chicago Blackhawks. Brent Seabrook sent the Detroit Red Wings to the Eastern Conference with an L at the United Center. I still believe Niklas Hjalmarsson‘s shot should have counted, but this was one of the top five most electric moments of the dynasty era. I was there. And I’m still shocked there was no damage to the roof of the building when this puck went in. I miss playoff hockey in Chicago.
On this day in 2013…

Brent Seabrook. Overtime Hero.

Report: Jonathan Toews “100 Percent Committed” to NHL Return

It appears the comeback for the longest tenured captain in Blackhawks history is officially a go. Jonathan Toews is reportedly ready to go.

Pierre LeBrun tweeted on Thursday afternoon that Toews has given his agent, Pat Brisson, the green light to engage NHL teams about his return.

image-22.png

While it would be amazing to see Toews finish his career only ever wearing a single sweater in the NHL, it’s hard to imagine the Blackhawks would entertain the comeback at this point in the rebuild. The current front office committed to creating space for this generation to create its own culture, and that is on track. With a new head coach, bringing back Captain Serious feels like a nearly impossible ask.

But here’s hoping Toews is indeed healthy and ready to come back to remind everyone just how good he is — and helping his future team win (just not at the expense of the Blackhawks, please).

Jared Nightingale Named New Rockford IceHogs Head Coach

We’ve been waiting for the Blackhawks to name a new head coach of the Rockford IceHogs. That happened on Friday morning. And it’s a name familiar to IceHogs fans.

Jared Nightingale, who was the captain of the IceHogs 11 years ago, has been named the new head coach in Rockford. He was also an assistant with Rockford from 2021-24, and spent last season as the head coach and Director of Hockey Operations for the ECHL’s South Carolina Stingrays.

The IceHogs also announced assistant coaches Rob Klinkhammer and Josh MacNevin will remain with the club.

“Jared did a phenomenal job with South Carolina this past season in his first campaign as a head coach,” Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson said in the IceHogs’ statement. “A natural leader, Jared’s confidence and direction behind the bench has produced a coaching style that is perfectly suited to help develop and advance our young prospects in Rockford. His familiarity with the organization and our players is an incomparable asset and we’re excited to see Jared succeed in this role moving forward.”

Also from the statement:

He posted a 52-15-5 record in his one season with the team, establishing new franchise records for most points (109) and wins (52) in a single season. Nightingale won the John Brophy Award as ECHL Coach of the Year as the Stingrays secured the Brabham Cup awarded to the team with the best regular-season record, the team’s first since 1997.

Draft Comps, Nightingale, Lardis Honored, Bedard Welcomes the Tempo, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

I really like the Blackhawks bringing Jared Nightingale back into the organization as the new head coach in Rockford. He did an excellent job in his one season as the head coach of South Carolina in the ECHL last year but has a lot of familiarity with the organization having been an assistant in Rockford before departing. Again, coaching is going to be critical at this point in the building process and everyone the Blackhawks have brought in has impressed thus far.

  • Blackhawks prospect Nick Lardis was named to the OHL’s First All-Star Team on Friday. The all-stars and all-rookie teams are selected by the OHL’s General Managers. He will likely start his professional career playing for Nightingale in Rockford this fall. Michael Misa was also named to the First Team for those taking notes.
  • Connor Bedard was among the Canadian athletes welcoming the newest team in the WNBA, the Toronto Tempo.
  • This is a really good watch. Chris Peters and Cam Robinson discussed their NHL comps for the top players in the 2025 NHL Draft. And some of the names they mention probably weren’t on your radar — and might make you re-think how you view some of the top players in this summer’s draft class.

  • Since there are people writing off the potential of Caleb Desnoyers being a possibility for the Blackhawks with the third pick in the draft because he hadn’t put a point on the board at the Memorial Cup, he confirmed last night that he had been playing thru an injury.
  • Enormous college hockey news from Friday: projected first-round draft pick Cole Reschny has committed to North Dakota. UND also reportedly received a commitment from 2026 Draft-eligible right-handed defenseman Keaton Verhoeff, who is projected to be the second overall pick next summer. He’s a stud. Write that name down for later this summer/the coming months.

  • David Pagnotta at The Fourth Period reported former Blackhawks head coach Luke Richardson interviewed for some of the head coach vacancies and is still “under consideration for a role on Rick Tocchet’s bench in Philadelphia.”
  • Pagnotta also reported the Utah Mammoth “are believed to be open to moving the fourth-overall pick. Some believe Utah GM Bill Armstrong will consider trading the pick for a young top-six, NHL-proven forward.”
  • The New York Islanders got to business with their new GM handing out contracts on Friday. Former Blackhawks defenseman Adam Boqvist received a one-year deal (reportedly $850k) and forward Kyle Palmieri received a two-year deal with a $4.75M cap hit. Pagnotta reported the deals were agreed to with the previous regime but the new front office honored the commitments.

Efficient Spending, McKenna to MSU? Oettinger Talks, Panthers Walk, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

We’ve been talking — and will continue to talk — about the Blackhawks potentially spending some bigger money on higher profile players this summer. I’ve asked if this is the right summer to go big. We’ve talked about some of the available free agents and their potential fits in Chicago. Everyone wants the Blackhawks to be better soon, and even if we can agree with both GM Kyle Davidson and new head coach Jeff Blashill when they say you can’t rush development, that doesn’t keep us from dreaming about playoff hockey at the United Center.

So I present this terrific piece from Rachel Doerrie at ESPN for a couple reasons. First, there’s been a lot of talk recently about the Lightning and Panthers running the Eastern Conference because of their tax advantages (is it real? Yes. Is it a convenient excuse for teams that can’t beat them? Hell yes!). Second, there’s a cautionary tale we can take away from the failed Toronto Maple Leafs. The coming years are going to be the hardest tests for the Blackhawks’ front office because they need to plan years in advance and spend wisely on their internal free agents — some of whom need a decision from the organization already this month.

Really good read for Blackhawks fans here.

Efficient contracts are how teams win. Inefficient contracts shorten contention windows. Why teams should avoid overspending on Marner & Bennett this upcoming July, their true value, and how the Leafs should approach balancing their forwards. https://t.co/wI9bIi67kd

  • The Blackhawks are going to share more information and some interior images of the expansion of Fifth Third Arena on Tuesday.
  • I’m not sold on the Blackhawks mortgaging significant draft assets in 2026 on an offer sheet this summer (read: no $7M+ deals thrown around for JJ Peterka or Matthew Knies). BUT I wouldn’t be mad at all if they made a play for Rangers RFA forward Will Cuylle. I’ve mentioned his name before. The more I watch him, the more I want to see him on a line with AJ Spellacy wrecking things in a couple years. Would I give up the Hawks’ second-round pick in 2026 to get him? Yeah, probably.
  • Good on the Florida Panthers for being a top notch organization. Class all around. Maybe, just maybe, the fact that they spend time between the conference finals and the Stanley Cup Final on things like this is why there’s a line around the block to play there?

  • With that in mind, John Buccigross of ESPN has been on a heater this summer with his predictions. If projected 2026 No. 1 overall pick Gavin McKenna winds up at Michigan State??
  • The Colorado Avalanche announced late this week that they have signed goaltender Ilya Nabokov to a two-year, entry-level contract. He was the first goaltender selected in the 2024 NHL Draft.
  • David Pagnotta at The Fourth Period reported San Jose Barracuda head coach John McCarthy and Milwaukee Admirals head coach Karl Taylor signed extensions with their AHL clubs this past week.
  • The end of Jake Oettinger’s season was ugly. And controversial. So everyone was waiting to see how he handled his end-of-season media. I would say he did about as well (likely better) than many expected. Well done here.

It’s Time to Talk About the Blackhawks’ Internal Free Agents

I have seen some comments on social media in recent days wondering why the Blackhawks “haven’t done anything” with some of their internal restricted and unrestricted free agents yet.

The biggest name people have wondered about — since the trade deadline — is forward Ryan Donato, who is coming off the best season of his career. But the Blackhawks have some RFAs to deal with, too. Wyatt Kaiser, Louis Crevier and Arvid Söderblom top that list.

It would make sense for the Blackhawks to hire a new head coach and staff before beginning the process of negotiating with their internal free agents.

Now that Jeff Blashill has been hired, the process can begin with him and his new staff to evaluate the returning roster the Blackhawks have and how the internal free agents could work in the new systems. The organization also needs to consider their targets on the open market and trade options between now and the 2025 NHL Draft.

Blackhawks Roster Evaluation

Blashill was quick to remind us that rebuilds need to be patient and give prospects time to develop. Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson has preached that from his first day on the job. And GMKD has also been incredibly intentional with his roster construction over the past couple years to not sign players who might block prospects from coming up tot he NHL in the coming years.

But every indication is now is a time for the Blackhawks to make an effort to make a splash and find a more significant player to complement Connor Bedard and help elevate his game to another level. With all due respect to Donato, Ilya Mikheyev and Philipp Kurashev, if the Blackhawks want to see Bedard reclaim his “generational prospect” label and make his immense talent more productive on the back of his hockey cards, the Blackhawks have to find better player(s) to play with the face of their franchise.

With that being said, the Blackhawks still need to surround their young players with the right veterans who are going to support Blashill’s efforts to develop a winning culture in Chicago. And it speaks well to the organization’s development process to reward young players when they’ve earned another contract.

Donato worked his ass off to get better in the areas that were limiting him and the dividends were a huge offensive season. He doesn’t take a shift off. It’s easy to look at him and say he’s the right kind of guy to support the building process. But he also has to want to accept the best offer the Blackhawks put on the table. If Donato opts to test the market on July 1, that’s his choice and shouldn’t be viewed as a negative for the Blackhawks.

Wyatt Kaiser Chicago Blackhawks

Gary A. Vasquez-Imagn Images

The intrigue for me is what the Blackhawks do with the three RFAs I named. Kaiser is clearly ready to be an NHL defenseman. The question is whether that’s in Chicago or elsewhere; the Blackhawks have a pretty stocked depth chart on the back end.

If the Blackhawks view Sam Rinzel and Artyom Levshunov as full-time NHL players next year, that complicates the path to regular ice time for Crevier on the right side. If the new coaching staff and front office like the way Ethan Del Mastro and Nolan Allan complement their mix on the left side moving forward and see Kevin Korchinski as NHL-ready, that makes finding a spot on the left side for Kaiser harder to do. Alex Vlasic isn’t going anywhere.

The situation in net is even more troublesome. Laurent Brossoit has one more year on his contract but didn’t see a single minute of NHL action all of last year. Meanwhile, Söderblom showed big strides forward in his development. Either of them would figure to be backing up Spencer Knight moving forward with Drew Commesso definitely in the mix in the near future.

Hiring a head coach is the catalyst to begin evaluating how and where some of these players might fit into the 2025-26 Blackhawks roster. But answering those questions is where the collaboration between the new coaching staff and the front office needs to crank into high gear in the coming weeks.
