2025 NHL Draft Lottery Date Set

It’s now (reportedly) officially official: the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery will be held on Monday, May 5 (per Frank Seravalli).

The Blackhawks own the second-best odds of winning the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery by virtue of having the second-worst record in the league. Again. In first/last place: the San Jose Sharks. Again.

Here are the final odds of winning the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery for teams involved from the good folks at Tankathon:

Rick Tocchet, Vancouver Canucks Parting Ways (Updates)

The Chicago Blackhawks are one of a growing list of teams searching for a new head coach this summer. Now, it appears we can add the Vancouver Canucks to the list.

The Canucks confirmed reports this afternoon that Rick Tocchet will not return to Vancouver next season.

The Vancouver Canucks announced today that Rick Tocchet has decided not to return as Head Coach for the upcoming season.

After thoughtful discussions with the team and management, Tocchet has opted to step away from his role, concluding his tenure with the Canucks.

— Vancouver Canucks (@Canucks) April 29, 2025

Tocchet, 61, has been the head coach in Tampa (two years), Arizona (four years) and Vancouver (three years). He appeared in 1,144 games in the NHL as a forward, largely with the Philadelphia Flyers — who also happen to be in the market for a head coach.

Could/Should the Blackhawks make a call? Of course. Tocchet has a good relationship with Luke Richardson, however, and that might influence his willingness to answer a call from a 312 phone number.

Coaching Buzz, Dach Back, Utah Mammoth? Hagel Out, Norris Finalists, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

Let’s start our Wednesday with an interesting read here from the crew at The Athletic on the NHL teams looking for a new head coach, a list that includes the Chicago Blackhawks. They break down all of the teams searching with their pros and cons for the job and what their outlook to win a championship appears to be at this stage. (The story was initially published before we learned the Canucks and Rick Tocchet are parting ways.)

The Blackhawks biggest selling point is their youth movement. It’s also their biggest question mark. As they note, tearing things down to the degree the Blackhawks have takes time to build back up. Here’s what they wrote about the likely fits for the Hawks:

The Blackhawks were also hoping for Carle, but he’s already removed himself from their search. They’ll undoubtedly target [Mike] Sullivan next. He fits what they’re looking for, but it’s unknown whether they fit him. Jay Woodcroft might be the Blackhawks’ best bet if they don’t bring back interim coach Anders Sörensen.

There are seven head coach vacancies in the NHL: Ducks, Bruins, Blackhawks, Rangers, Flyers, Penguins and Kraken.

  • To the surprise of very few, it sounds like Mike Sullivan isn’t going to need to spend much time on LinkedIn. No teams named here, but the Blackhawks should have been one of the five to at least kick the tires.

Five teams have already inquired about free-agent coach Mike Sullivan. No surprise there given his stature in the coaching world. My sense is some called tire kicking, curious, others very much with serious interest. He won’t be out of work for too long.

  • Colton Dach is back with the IceHogs working out before their next playoff series begins on Thursday. He could be a huge addition to the IceHogs’ lineup against the Admirals. Here’s the media availability of Dach and Cole Guttman from Tuesday:

  • Overnight a few observers noted that the official Youtube page of the Utah Hockey Club changed to Utah Mammoth. Did we get an under-the-radar name change hint? I’m sure we’ll find out soon if the team’s social channels started making changes.

Looks like YouTube handle has officially given away Mammoth as team name in Utah.

Let’s Talk About the Blackhawks’ Speed, and How/Where/If Tyler Bertuzzi Fits Into the Future

Earlier this week, the fine folks at JFresh shared this graphic of the slowest players in the NHL. You’ll notice Pat Maroon took the championship belt and went home with it, but the Blackhawks are not-so-impressively represented on these three lists:

image.png

I know there are going to be plenty of people who want to sprint to the top of their local hill and scream at the clouds because Connor Bedard is on the list for lowest top sustained speed, but the guys right after him in that top 25 — Cole Perfetti and Anze Kopitar — have fans who aren’t complaining about their ability to produce. So I’m not going to give much oxygen to that list.

What I am concerned about is that the Blackhawks’ two big free agent signings from last summer — the only two external free agents who have received contracts longer than two years since Kyle Davidson took over as GM — appear on all three lists. Tyler Bertuzzi and Teuvo Teräväinen approach the game differently, but they rank similarly when it comes to speek on the ice.

Frankly, I was surprised to see Teräväinen on all three. And I’m not necessarily worried about the perceived lack of speed in his game being an issue after he assisted on 43 of the Blackhawks’ 224 team goals this season (19 percent of the total). He started the season as a third-line player and that’s probably where he fits best on the roster.

My concern remains with Bertuzzi, and how he fits beyond his first season in Chicago.

Tyler Bertuzzi Chicago Blackhawks

David Kirouac-Imagn Images

When the dust settled for the 2024-25 Blackhawks season, Bertuzzi was tied with Bedard for second on the team with 23 goals. On the surface, that’s not a bad line; that’s the second-best season of Bertuzzi’s career that didn’t involve a trade during the year.

Between Nov. 10 and Dec. 7, Bertuzzi went 12 games without scoring a goal. Between Jan. 20 and March 15, Bertuzzi went another 20 games without a goal. For those scoring at home, that’s 32 games over two stretches in which Bertuzzi didn’t score a goal. Not ideal.

Bertuzzi was brought in to be a top-six forward and his 23 goals would theoretically point to a guy who can play that role. As the Blackhawks improve the talent in the lineup and add more young players, there will be more, better opportunities to score.

But… that’s the problem. The young players who are coming up are Frank Nazar and Landon Slaggert and Oliver Moore and Ryan Greene (so far). And each of them — and the waves that will follow them to the NHL — are all known for their speed on the ice. According to another graphic from JFresh (and we’ve discussed this before), Nazar ranked among the league leaders in number of 22+ mph bursts per 60 minutes (1.1). NHL Edge data tells us Nazar ranked in the 85th percentile in the NHL in total number of speed bursts over 20 mph (146) — and he only appeared in 53 NHL games.

The kids aren’t the only guys on the roster who can fly. While he isn’t one of the Blackhawks’ top prospects, and he didn’t appear among the league leaders in any of the columns shared by JFresh somehow, but Ilya Mikheyev is one of the faster forwards in the league. NHL Edge data tells us his top speed (23.18 mph) this past season ranked in the 91st percentile in the NHL and he ranked in the 95th percentile in the league in total number of speed bursts over 20 mph (198).

Slotting Lukas Reichel into the 2025-26 roster is tough because of the healthy scratches and inconsistent ice time realities he’s faced over the past couple years. But even he ranked in the 95th percentile in the league in total number of speed bursts over 20 mph (198 — the same number as Mikheyev but in only 70 games played).

When we look at how the Blackhawks generated dangerous chances in the final weeks of the regular season, many of them came off the rush because they had sports cars on the ice creating space with their wheels.

Which brings me back to how / where / if Bertuzzi ultimately fits into the Blackhawks’ lineup in the final three years of his contract.

Tyler Bertuzzi Chicago Blackhawks

David Banks-Imagn Images

Let’s roll the tape back to Oct. 21, when I wrote about the issues I was already seeing with the way the Blackhawks’ 2024-25 roster was constructed. The roster on the ice then was far from the roster on the ice at the end of March and into April; it was older and slower. And the team was struggling to create much offense because it was slow — something I labeled an organizational paradox because the future is being built on young speed.

Going back to the 2023-24 season when he was (mostly) healthy, Jason Dickinson ranked in the 72nd percentile in the NHL in total number of speed bursts over 20 mph. If we consider newcomer Joe Veleno a part of the bottom six as well, even he ranked in the 75th percentile in the league in total number of speed bursts over 20 mph (114). So your way-too-early third and fourth line centers are both above average skaters as well.

One figures a fully healthy roster in camp will see Teräväinen slotted back into a bottom-six role. The other notable snail on the JFresh lists, Nick Foligno, will join him there. Maroon is retired now. Craig Smith got traded away. Their roster spots will be up for grabs with a healthy camp competition for the youngsters — each of whom, again, brings speed to the ice.

The Blackhawks have a lot of cap space to work with this summer and figure to be in the market for someone to help improve their top six. Considering the profile of the youth movement — fast — one has to assume skating will be a factor that weighs heavily in the evaluation of offers.

Back in March, I pondered Bertuzzi’s role on the Blackhawks moving forward with the focus of that piece being his poor advanced metrics. Considering the speed of the roster more deeply now that the full season is in the books amplifies the fit being a question mark even further.

Looking ahead to the coming season, it’s hard to imagine the Blackhawks will take a guy who tied for second on the team in goal scoring this past season and put him in a bottom-line role, but… where else does Bertuzzi fit?

Knight’s Hope, Lardis and Misa, Miracle Medals, Ted Lindsay Finalists, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

Good morning and welcome to May, Blackhawks fans. We’re less than one week from our dreams coming true/being destroyed by the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery. Which, of course, isn’t reality because the worst the Hawks can pick is fourth overall. But it certainly feels like the world might end if a team jumps ahead of the Blackhawks in the lottery based on the comments on social media. However the lottery ends up, the Blackhawks will add a quality player to their system at the end of June. But let’s all just hope they stay in the top two.

  • Let’s start our May with some Spencer Knight, shall we? He spoke with James Murphy at RG Media about his role as a mentor for Montreal prospect Jacob Fowler and the Canadiens being in the playoffs. Knight told him he sees the Habs getting to the postseason as the path the Blackhawks will be on in the coming year(s). Good quote here from Knight in the story:
“It definitely gives organizations that are in similar positions, like us, the motivation to get to that point. And there’s no reason why we can’t eventually and definitely do it. It just takes a lot of commitment on all ends: players, management, staff, everyone. It’s definitely motivating. We’ll get there, but we’re going to do it on our own timeline, our own path. It’s not like a cookie-cutter thing, like whatever they did or how they did it. We’re going to do it our way and go from there, and I feel confident we’ll get there.”

Spencer Knight to Jacob Fowler: “You need to learn what it means to be a pro before you really make it.”

Blackhawks goalie has some supportive words for the Canadiens prospect.

  • In the OHL playoffs last night, Blackhawks prospect Jack Pridham had the primary assist on Kitchener’s first goal and scored their second and final goal of the night. Unfortunately, London scored four times and ended the Rangers’ season. Pridham will now take his talents to Boston University this fall.
  • Blackhawks prospect Nick Lardis posted a lovely Thank You to Brantford for a couple great years on his Instagram on Tuesday. That ordinarily doesn’t get my attention. The fact that other young Blackhawks like Frank Nazar liked the post is noteworthy, but not “gotta put this in my Bullets” level noteworthy. HOWEVER, when the other electric scorer in the OHL this past season, top draft prospect Michael Misa, throws the slot machine gif in the comments on the day the NHL announces the date of the 2025 NHL Draft LotteryTHAT gets my attention.

  • Steven Ellis at Daily Faceoff looked at five prospects who are raising their draft profile at the U-18 World Championship, which is currently taking place in Dallas. One name on his list that got my attention (again) is German forward Maxim Schäfer. He’s listed at 6-4 and 184 pounds and had a really good World Junior Championship. He skates incredibly well for a player his size. Might be a name to keep in mind for the Blackhawks in the middle rounds in June.

IceHogs Game Day, Cooper Stays, Seabrook’s Impact, NHL Award News, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

At his end-of-season media availability, Tampa Bay general manager Julien BriseBois said Jon Cooper will return as the Lightning’s head coach. This should not come as a shock. Disappointing? Perhaps for some. Would he have come to Chicago? I think that’s as much of a pipe dream as Mike Sullivan was before he went to the Rangers on Friday.

One other potential impact to the Blackhawks’ head coaching search here: there’s a lot of love out there for Lightning assistant coach Jeff Halpern. He’s been on the Bolts’ bench since 2018-19 season. If Cooper is staying in Tampa, the Lightning would have to grant another team’s request to interview/hire Halpern. We’ll have to wait and see if that happens.

  • BriseBois also indicated it’s unlikely Michigan State forward Isaac Howard, the 2025 Hobey Baker Award winner, signs with the team. Howard, 21, was the 31st overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft. I would be interested in him as a college free agent possibility for the Blackhawks. Howard has previously indicated he plans on returning to East Lansing. I will also note that Cole Guttman was originally drafted by the Lightning and didn’t sign there; he wasn’t a first-round pick but was the captain of an NCAA championship team at Denver.
  • Speaking of coaches, Seattle’s Jessica Campbell spoke at the ESPNW Summit earlier this week and said former Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook was one of the people who encouraged her to pursue her dream of coaching in the NHL. As an aside, I wish the Blackhawks would be open to bringing Seabrook back to help the defensemen. I’m not saying Kevin Dean needs to go — he’s been really good here — but Seabrook is quietly doing great work these days.

Kraken assistant coach Jessica Campbell says, “We shouldn’t have to wait for someone to tell us it’s possible.”

Brent Seabrook told Campbell that she was going to coach in the NHL one day and that helped her continue to stay her course. #ESPNWSummit

Blackhawks Draft Lottery Scenarios: What They Could/Should Do at Each Possible Outcome

The 2025 NHL Draft Lottery is Monday night. It’s another significant night in the rebuild timeline for the Chicago Blackhawks, who own the second spot in the lottery order. That means the Blackhawks have the second-best odds of selecting first overall; they also have a stronger likelihood of picking third or fourth than they do of staying put with the second overall pick.

The draft lottery presents scenarios for the Blackhawks that will impact the future of the franchise. The good news: Chicago cannot pick lower than fourth overall, and it certainly appears there are options after the top two prospects in this year’s class that will help the overall trajectory of the franchise.

Let’s talk about what the Blackhawks could/should do in the event they win the lottery, stay put or if the worst-case scenario(s) play out and one or two other teams win the lottery.

Matthew Schaefer Erie Otters 2025 NHL Draft

Blackhawks Pick No. 1

This presents maybe the toughest decision for the Blackhawks. Do they take the consensus top prospect, left-handed defenseman Matthew Schaefer? Or do they take the clear-cut top forward prospect who could be the No. 1 center for the next decade with their young horses, Michael Misa? Like last year’s decision between Ivan Demidov and Artyom Levshunov, this is a tough call.

My Take: I would take Misa. He projects to be a 100-point guy in the NHL, can skate, plays a good all-around game and has the size to play down the middle long-term. They opted to take the defenseman over the forward last year, so do the opposite this year. And Misa has a bona fide case to be the top pick.

If the Blackhawks take Schaefer to add to their already impressive stable of young defensemen, that likely begins a series of dominoes this summer with prospects becoming trade chips.

Blackhawks Pick No. 2

Let’s cross our fingers and hope the Sharks stay at No. 1 and the Blackhawks stay put at No. 2. The Sharks taking Schaefer first overall makes perfect sense for them; I’ve had that happening in most of my mock drafts (including my most recent last week). The Sharks taking Schaefer means the Blackhawks can take Misa without blinking. And there isn’t a defenseman in the mix for this pick; Misa going here is almost as easy to predict as Connor Bedard was at No. 1 in 2023.

If somehow or for some reason the Sharks take Misa at No. 1 — or trade out of the pick, or someone else wins the lottery and the Blackhawks “win” to stay at No. 2 — that makes for another whole series of sleepless nights trying to figure out what’s going to happen here for the Blackhawks.

Blackhawks Pick at No. 3 or No. 4

This assumes one or two teams win the lottery to move up and the Blackhawks slide back either one or, the worst-case scenario, two positions. For the purposes of this exercise, let’s assume the top two picks remain Schaefer and Misa.

That’s not an enormous loss for the Blackhawks, though the player that would help their trajectory most in this draft class is Misa. And, frankly, I wouldn’t be mad if the Blackhawks found a way to get back into the top two to get Misa via trade. But let’s look at the names who would likely be in play for the Blackhawks if they moved back once or twice in the lottery tonight.

Blackhawks Next-Best Options

Caleb Desnoyers, C
6-1, 178
Shoots: Left
2024-25 Team: Moncton Wildcats (QMJHL)

The more I read about Desnoyers, the more I think he could be the pick for the Blackhawks at No. 3 overall if that’s how the draft lottery plays out. He’s got the right size to stay down the middle at the NHL level. He plays physically on both ends of the rink. I’m not going to go as far as to say he could be the Jonathan Toews of this generation for the Blackhawks, but he projects as a strong all-around, top-line center. Corey Pronman’s comp on his latest draft prospect rankings (where he has him third) is Nico Hischier.

Anton Frondell, C
6-1, 198
Shoots: Right
2024-25 Team: Djurgårdens IF (SHL)

Frondell is a strong, physical center who can skate. He’s a playmaker who has a hammer for a shot and is also defensively responsible. His season started slowly because he was injured but his stock has been consistently rising since Christmas to the point that he’s now in play to be a top-three pick.

It’s also noteworthy that Frondell played in the top league in Sweden against men this season as a teenager. That experience, like playing in the NCAA, bodes well for his game transitioning well to the NHL.

Porter Martone, RW
6-3, 208
Shoots: Right
2024-25 Team: Brampton Steelheads (OHL)

The knock on Martone is he isn’t a great skater. But you’ve read it here frequently, especially when I had him going to the Blackhawks in some of my early mock drafts: Martone might be the Tkachuk-like power forward the Blackhawks need in their top six to take some heat and pressure off the smaller centers.

It’s noteworthy here that Martone was invited to play on the men’s team for Canada at the World Championship (at least in the preliminary games). He’s a banger and would look really nice with the young forwards the Blackhawks have in the fold already.

James Hagens, C
5-11, 170
Shoots: Left
2024-25 Team: Boston College (Hockey East — NCAA)

A year ago, we would have had Hagens in the conversation for the No. 1 overall pick. He opted to go the college route and has one full season of NCAA hockey under his belt before the draft — something the Blackhawks have valued (see: Levshunov). Hagens was a point-per-game player at BC as a freshman, which is impressive, and he presents the package of elite speed and skill that the Blackhawks have targeted.

The question here is if his size — and some projecting him as a wing at the next level — gives the Blackhawks pause. Their top two centers right now — Bedard and Frank Nazar — are both guys who come in under six feet.

Jake O’Brien, C
6-2, 172
Shoots: Right
2024-25 Team: Brantford Bulldogs (OHL)

I already know there will be folks jumping into the comments here and on social media telling me that taking O’Brien in the top four would be a reach. And I agree; I wouldn’t take him at No. 3 overall. But here’s the part we cannot ignore: O’Brien is one of the hottest names in this draft class, and the Blackhawks got to see him a lot this year skating with Nick Lardis and Marek Vanacker in Brantford.

He has the size you want for a center on your first or second line and his pre-draft season offensive numbers are impressive (that’s why he’s moving up so quickly). Throw in 11 points in 11 playoff games and the package is very good for a team early in the draft.

To be clear: if the Blackhawks opt to select O’Brien over the names ahead of him on this list, it’s because they saw enough of what they covet in prospects watching him in junior that they believe he’s the goods.

Rantanen’s Revenge, Anderson’s Hat Trick, Nazar’s Growth, Canada Gold, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

So much amazing playoff hockey to talk about on Sunday, and we’re going to start with the game that means the most to the Blackhawks. The Rockford IceHogs needed a dramatic comeback and overtime game-winner in Game One in Milwaukee to take the lead in their series with the Admirals. They didn’t leave us nervous in Game Two.

Joey Anderson had a natural hat trick, Aidan Thompson scored his first professional playoff goal and the IceHogs got two more from Samuel Savoie and Brett Seney to run away with a 6-1 win. Drew Commesso stopped 30 of 31 and had an assist in the game. Savoie had two assists with his goal for a big three-point night. Thompson added an assist for a two-point game and Anderson led the way with an assist in addition to his three goals.

The IceHogs head back to Rockford with a 2-0 lead in the series, a hot goaltender and offense coming from everywhere. Love to see it.

  • In the Stanley Cup Playoffs, hoo boy! Did we ever get a bona fide championship-caliber seventh game in the first round from a couple teams that could make a case for being the best in the entire league. The Avs took a 2-0 lead 31 seconds into the third period and then, of all people, Mikko Rantanen took over the game.
  • Rantanen scored the two goals to tie the game, had an assist on the go-ahead goal and then made a deposit into the empty cage to finish his personal hat trick and eliminate the team he played for just a few short months ago. It was an emotional night for a lot of the players involved. Dallas finally wins a big series. Colorado has some big questions to answer now this summer. And Rantanen’s revenge will live in infamy / legend, depending on the fan base you talk to about this game years down the road.
  • Dallas head coach Pete DeBoer summed this one up perfectly after the game. And he’s right: this year, the Central Division was absolutely the best division in the NHL.

  • Happy 24th birthday to Blackhawks’ RFA defenseman Louis Crevier.
  • Good stuff here from Ben Pope on the second half of the season from Frank Nazar.

Frank Nazar's growth was one of the most impressive things to come out of this Blackhawks season.

He ranked 7th among NHL rookies in scoring from Jan. 18 on — and second in April.

  • Canada won gold at the U-18 World Championship on Saturday. Of the long list of 2025 NHL Draft prospects whose futures might be impacted by the draft lottery on Monday night, no player made a strong impression than Cole Reschny. He had a magnificent tournament and likely climbed a few draft boards in the last couple weeks.

"Very special to win with a very special group."

Lottery Luck, Nazar Scores Twice in Germany, Jets Survive, Sid Playing for Canada, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

The Stanley Cup Playoffs continue to give us the best reality television. But we’re going to head overseas to start our morning with a warm-up game at the IIHF Men’s World Championship between Blackhawks Frank Nazar, Alex Vlasic and the United States against Lukas Reichel and Germany. The game was played in Düsseldorf. That didn’t matter to the Americans, who skated away with a 5-2 win in which Nazar scored two gorgeous goals.

Here are Nazar’s two goals — with German commentary. One might say Nazar’s performance was fabelhaft!

Gotta be honest, Frank Nazar scoring a 🚨 for the 🇺🇸 still hits right even when the commentary is in German #Blackhawks

  • After a breathtaking Game 7 between the Stars and Avalanche, how could the Jets and Blues possibly take things to another level? How about a terrible, awful, worst-case scenario start for the Jets at home — the first time since Winnipeg joined the NHL that the city hosted a Game 7. St. Louis scored two goals in the first period; the Jets had three shots on net. But the game is 60 minutes long… well, at least 60 minutes. And the Jets used almost the entire 60 to come back from two, two-goal deficits. Cole Perfetti (officially at 59:57) scored the latest game-tying goal in a Game 7 in NHL history. Perfetti scored two of the three goals in regulation for Winnipeg.

  • Overtime was required, but 20 minutes wasn’t enough. For just the 14th time in the history of the NHL, we got multiple overtimes out of a Game 7, and it was Winnipeg that got the game-winner to advance. The Presidents’ Trophy winners will stay home and face Dallas in the conference semifinals. Absolutely amazing game!
  • Here is the complete schedule for the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs:

  • Count me as one of those who is ready to name Jake Oettinger the starting goaltender for the USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics. I need to see a lot more from likely Vezina winner and Hart finalist Connor Hellebuyck the rest of the way in these playoffs. We’ll get a head-to-head Oettinger vs. Hellebuyck matchup in the next round, starting Wednesday night in Winnipeg.
  • Earlier this morning I shared an explanation of the NHL draft lottery, some historical notes on teams moving up/staying put and how the Blackhawks have benefitted from the lottery since its inception in 1995.

  • No, the Blackhawks shouldn’t hire Peter Laviolette.
  • The IceHogs are off until Wednesday, which sucks because they’re hot right now.
  • Hockey Canada announced Sidney Crosby will skate in the Men’s World Championship. Darren Dreger reported on Sunday that Nathan MacKinnon will join him. Hello!

Blackhawks History with the Third Overall Pick in the NHL Draft

On Monday evening, the NHL held its annual draft lottery. The New York Islanders won the first overall selection, which means the Chicago Blackhawks move back one spot to the third overall selection.

The Blackhawks have picked third overall six times in the history of the franchise. And I would say that spot in the draft has treated them pretty well. One is in the Hockey Hall of Fame, another is the longest tenured captain in the history of the franchise (and will be a Hall of Famer soon) and another is a beloved broadcaster.

Here are the six previous players the Blackhawks selected when they owned the No. 3 overall pick in the NHL Draft:

  • 1966 – Terry Caffery
  • 1980 – Denis Savard
  • 1984 – Ed Olczyk
  • 2004 – Cam Barker
  • 2006 – Jonathan Toews
  • 2019 – Kirby Dach

How About Kirk Muller as a Blackhawks Head Coach Candidate?

Earlier this week when Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson spoke after the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery, the search for a new head coach was a prominent part of the conversation with the media. I shared some of what Davidson said earlier this week.

But one thing Davidson said got my attention. It felt insignificant at the time, but Davidson mentioned candidates they have interviewed and will interview — an indication there are some candidates with whom they are still waiting to chat.

Which might imply there are coaches still in the playoffs who they’ve identified as candidates for the Blackhawks’ job opening.

Davidson’s comments and the passing of the draft lottery moved my attention from the draft to potential coaching candidates for the Blackhawks. I plan on looking at a few names that might be on the list for the next bench boss in Chicago in the coming days and weeks.

The first name I’d like to discuss is currently in the playoffs on Spencer Carbery’s staff with the Washington Capitals.

Blackhawks Coach Candidate: Kirk Muller

Muller wasn’t on my previous list of candidates, but a little digging made me increasingly intrigued that he could be a strong candidate for the Blackhawks.

If you’re looking for a player who spent time in the league as a player (like Luke Richardson), Muller checks that box. He appeared in 1,349 regular-season games during his career.

If you’re looking for a guy who knows about the pressure of being a highly-touted young player, he checks that box as well. Muller was the second overall pick in the 1984 NHL Draft (between some guy named Mario and Eddie Olczyk).

If you’re looking for a guy with previous NHL head coaching experience, another check mark. Muller was the head coach in Carolina from 2011-14. And he has plenty of experience as an NHL assistant/associate coach; Muller has spent another 16 years behind the bench with the Canadiens (two stints), Blues, Flames and, now, the Capitals.

Here’s something from Pierre LeBrun’s NHL rumblings column from Wednesday that got my attention regarding Muller as a potential fit:

Muller has been an big part of the Caps’ surprising first-place finish in the East this season. He’s done a great job running the power play. In talking to people who have worked with Muller over the years, what jumps out is his positive energy around the rink every day, which translates well with the modern players. He’s a strong communicator, and those who have worked with him say he has been impactful on the development of young players.

Sounds a lot like the description Davidson gave for what the Blackhawks are looking for in a new head coach, right? We’ve got the magic words — development of young players — as well as being a strong communicator and a guy who can improve a power play.

Official: It’s the Utah Mammoth

Welcome to the NHL, Utah Mammoth!

On Wednesday morning we learned the future of the Utah Hockey Club’s name. After more than 850,000 ballots were cast by fans in multiple rounds of voting, the team selected their new name. And we’ve got logos and jerseys to look at as well!

— Utah Mammoth (@utahhockeyclub) May 7, 2025

Here’s the statement from the principal owners, Ryan and Ashley Smith:

“We couldn’t be more excited to launch the official name and marks for Utah’s NHL hockey team. When it came to naming the team, we did something unprecedented – going through four rounds of community voting, including getting feedback not only on potential names but also on potential logos. We love the passion of the people of Utah and the way they showed up for the team during its inaugural season and the energy they brought to voting on its permanent identity. From day one, we committed that this team would be built with and for the people of Utah, and we are excited to celebrate today’s launch with the entire state. The community chose the Utah Mammoth, and it stands as a symbol of who we are, where we came from, and the unstoppable force we’re building together.”

Joel Quenneville is Back! Ducks Hire Their New Head Coach (Official)

The most successful head coach in the history of the Chicago Blackhawks is back in the NHL. After almost four full seasons out of the league, Joel Quenneville has been hired as the new head coach of the Anaheim Ducks.

NEWS: We're proud to announce Joel Quenneville as our new head coach!

He becomes the 12th head coach in franchise history.

— Anaheim Ducks (@AnaheimDucks) May 8, 2025

Quenneville, 66, spent a decade behind the bench in Chicago and coached the Blackhawks to three Stanley Cup championships. He resigned from the head coach role with the Florida Panthers after only seven games of the 2021-22 regular season after the Kyle Beach report was published, and has been out of the league since then. The NHL reinstated Quenneville and Stan Bowman on July 1 of last year.

The Ducks join the Rangers (Mike Sullivan) as the two teams to fill their head coaching vacancy thus far this offseason. Sullivan was introduced to in New York on Thursday morning.
