  • Scott Powers over at The Athletic shared some of what he’s hearing around the Blackhawks. One interesting note was on the pending negotiations between the Blackhawks and RFA defenseman Wyatt Kaiser.
Kaiser doesn’t have arbitration rights, meaning he doesn’t have a ton of leverage, but there is always the possibility of a holdout. It doesn’t sound like Kaiser is threatening that. It could make sense for Kaiser to bet on himself on a one-year deal and prove he’s the player he was late last season, positioning himself for a significant contract next summer. The Blackhawks are hopeful Kaiser is a top-four defenseman, but it probably doesn’t make sense just yet to pay him like one.

CBA Details, AHL at 19? Draft Rights, NCAA, CHL, IceHogs News, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

It’s quiet on the Blackhawks’ front right now, but there’s a lot going on in the hockey world as we start to get some more information — and reaction — to the new Collective Bargaining Agreement (which is now available online) and some tweaks that impact drafted prospects.

The biggest news in hockey on the macro this summer (with all due respect to Mitch Marner going to Vegas) is Gavin McKenna opting to take his talents from the CHL to the NCAA ranks. This is a really good, thorough read on the systemic impact of McKenna’s commitment on the NCAA (and NIL), the CHL and more. So many layers and the ripple effect is going to be massive.

What Gavin McKenna's commitment means for the NCAA, CHL, Penn State, NIL and more https://t.co/WSe9kU1Vwi

— The Athletic NHL (@TheAthleticNHL) July 9, 2025
  • With that in mind, some interesting information regarding tweaks to the rights of drafted players in the new CBA are starting to filter out. Teams will now own the rights of players until they are 22 across the board (four years if drafted at 18, three if drafted at 19, etc). According to PuckPedia, the changes will be effective beginning with the 2027 NHL Draft class.
  • This could be a bigger deal. Beginning with the new CBA (so, again, after the coming season), teams will be able to assign one 19-year-old CHL player to the AHL. I wish that was possible for guys like Kevin Korchinski.
Sources say a new provision in the CBA will allow each #NHL team to place one 19-year-old CHL player in the #AHL per season.

One per organization per season and 18-year-olds are ineligible.

Begins in 2026-27 season.

  • An interesting couple tweets from Scott Wheeler about players and agents viewing the CHL vs. the AHL and how the NCAA factored into that. With the number of CHL players heading to college right now, this feels counter to the thinking of the current trends.
I've had multiple agents tell me this week that many of their guys would make the CHL-to-AHL choice (with the ELC signing bonus) over going to the NCAA. Lots of kids who don't want to go back to school.

One CHL GM pointed out that, depending on the CBA language, kids could…

  • Business is good in Rockford! They announced on Friday morning that the IceHogs picked up a lot of hardware at the AHL Awards Gala recently. Congrats!

  • On Thursday, there was a vote finalized on the future of the NHL draft. Reports indicated it was likely the front offices were going to opt to keep it de-centralized for another year. I wasn’t a fan at all of the way the first round played out (took forever, not ideal for viewing) but I get it. It’s incredibly hard to focus on free agency and trades in the fish bowl that is the draft floor — especially only a couple days before the flood gates open for free agency. Maybe we work on moving the draft back earlier a week or so and then everyone can get what they want?
Apparently there are reports about the future of the NHL draft

There is a vote right now, not yet completed.

But from what I'm canvassing — unless there is a wild swing in the few remaining to be submitted — the vote will be to stay with the de-centralized format.

Frondell Staying in Sweden, a Not Great Prediction, Decentralized Drafting, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

A report this weekend from Expressen in Sweden got a lot of people’s attention on social media Saturday… but it really isn’t a revelation. The report says Anton Frondell, the No. 3 pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, will sign his entry-level with the Blackhawks soon but will return to Djurgårdens and play in the SHL this season.

Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson said that was the most likely route for Frondell this season back during development camp early in the month. And it makes sense, especially with Djurgårdens moving up to the top level in the SHL this year. The part of the Expressen report (which is not confirmed, by the way) that did get a little extra attention was a mention that he might not be at training camp for the Blackhawks in September.

Whether Frondell attends NHL camp or not, the Blackhawks taking the right amount of time with another top level prospect makes sense and is on brand. So, again, this shouldn’t be a shock.

  • And now this clip of Connor Bedard working out:

  • I’ve seen a few people complaining that Bedard — and other 2026 RFAs, both in Chicago and elsewhere — haven’t signed an extension yet. That, like the Frondell news, shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. Davidson told us during development camp when I asked him specifically about this issue that there would be some dust settling time after the new Collective Bargaining Agreement was made official to sort thru the specifics and figure out the path(s) forward. The Blackhawks are talking to Bedard about a deal that keeps him in Chicago. And he’s consistently said he wants to be here. So no deal being done on (checks notes) July 13 isn’t worth getting angry about on a beautiful Sunday.
  • We got some way early staff predictions for the 2025-26 NHL season from The Athletic. The Blackhawks got nearly half of the votes for the team with the fewest points in the standings. We’ll save this for next April, just in case…

You’ve read words I’ve written in this space for a while, so now I’ll take a moment to grace you with my voice and face. Apologies in advance. How I Voted for the Blackhawks Hall of Fame Inaugural Induction Class

Back on May 15, the Chicago Blackhawks shared some of the organization’s plans for celebrating the centennial of the Original Six franchise. Among the many events on the calendar is the founding of a Blackhawks Hall of Fame, which will live in the expanded Fifth Third Arena.

Players whose numbers have been retired by the organization will receive automatic induction into the new Blackhawks Hall of Fame.

The inaugural inductees into the Blackhawks Hall of Fame will be determined by votes from fans as well as votes from Blackhawks alumni and a select group of media invited to formally vote in that capacity. The ballot is split into two categories: a Heritage Era ballot (pre-2000) and Modern Era ballot (2000-present).

I am honored and privileged to share that I was invited to be one of the individuals who voted in the media group.

And I wanted to share how I voted in that capacity — and why.

Heritage Era Ballot — Steve Larmer

Unless you’re new to me writing about the Blackhawks (if that’s the case, welcome!), this should come as absolutely no surprise. Steve Larmer’s number 28 should have been retired by the Blackhawks more than two decades ago (it still should be), and this is the first opportunity I have had to formally do something about him being recognized for his stellar play as a member of the Blackhawks.

As of the end of the 2024-25 regular season, in the history of the Chicago Blackhawks Larmer ranks:

  • 5th in points (923) — behind Stan Mikita, Patrick Kane, Bobby Hull and Denis Savard
  • 4th in goals (406) — behind B. Hull, Mikita and Kane
  • 7th in assists (517) — behind Mikita, Kane, Savard, Doug Wilson, B. Hull and Duncan Keith
  • 1st in short-handed points (48)
  • 5th in power play points (339) — behind Mikita, Savard, Kane and D. Wilson
  • 5th in game-winning goals (49) — behind B. Hull, Mikita, Kane and Jonathan Toews
  • 1 of 6 players in Blackhawks history to avg. 1.00 points/game in at least 500 games played with the franchisewith Savard, Jeremy Roenick, B. Hull, Kane and Mikita.

At the time he was traded to the Rangers, Larmer was one of the five best offensive players in the history of the franchise. I would argue that he’s still in the top 5-6 offensive players in the history of the franchise.

There will be future ballots for the Blackhawks Hall of Fame. Players who made a significant impact on the franchise — Doug Wilson, Jeremy Roenick, Ed Belfour, Troy Murray — will hopefully join this first class of inductees. Wilson’s number should be retired by the Blackhawks as well. But at this time, I’m voting for Larmer to be the first member of the Blackhawks Hall of Fame from the Heritage Era Ballot.

Hopefully Larmer getting inducted into the Blackhawks Hall of Fame will get some attention from the individuals who vote for induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Modern Era Ballot — Brent Seabrook

This was a tougher choice for me because of the other members of the Dynasty teams whose names were on the ballot. But my rationale for voting for Seabrook is clear.

There’s no question Duncan Keith should be in the Blackhawks Hall of Fame. There’s also no question that his No. 2 will, at some point in the near future, hang in the rafters with the other all-time greats in the history of the Blackhawks franchise. Keith will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame this coming fall, which checks one of the boxes for his number to be retired.

Seabrook always resonated with me because, in many ways, he played a similar role on the dynasty teams to what Larmer did on his Blackhawks teams in the 1980s. He was a tremendous leader who did all of the things you need to win hockey games. But he was often overshadowed by his prolific teammates; Larmer was on a line with Savard, and Seabrook was Keith’s partner for years.

Only three players have appeared in more regular season games than Seabrook’s 1,114: Mikita, Keith and Kane. Seabrook averaged 21:56 of ice time in those 1,114 games. And among defensemen, only Doug Wilson (22) has more regular-season game-winning goals than Seabrook’s 19.

Seabrook is the Blackhawks’ all-time defenseman leader with 20 playoff goals. He is tied with Doug Wilson for the all-time defenseman lead with six power play goals. And he has the Blackhawks’ all-time lead among defensemen with three overtime goals.

The Blackhawks have already retired No. 7 for Chris Chelios. There should be another banner for Seabrook next to Chelios’ in the near future. But it’s a harder case to make for Seabrook to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame (though I can make one and have). Because of that, Seabrook received my vote off the Modern Era Ballot for the Blackhawks Hall of Fame.

Blackhawks Sign Anton Frondell to Entry-Level Contract

On Tuesday afternoon, the Blackhawks announced they have signed 2025 first-round pick Anton Frondell to his three-year, entry-level contract. The deal has a $975,000 cap hit.

a Swede signing‼️✍️

— Chicago Blackhawks (@NHLBlackhawks) July 15, 2025

The Blackhawks selected Frondell third overall in the 2025 NHL Draft. General manager Kyle Davidson said the plan was for Frondell to go back to Sweden for the coming 2025-26 season. However, the team release says the contract “runs through the 2027-28 season,” so we’ll just file that away for now.

Here’s some of what folks are saying about Frondell since the draft:

There’s a lot to like about Frondell’s game. He’s heavy but plays with intention, strength and some power (there were some questions about his fitness level after the time off, but he worked on it and quieted those concerns with a strong showing at the combine). He’s competitive. He excels in puck protection (which, again, we saw more of late in the Allsvenskan regular season). He engages himself on and off the puck, offensively and defensively, to get involved in impacting play in all three zones. He has fairly quick hands, a big one-timer, a natural and hard release and a good sense for spacing and attacking. He has an ability to both create his own looks (though I want to see him do it more consistently), challenge defenders and find and use open ice to play off and to his linemates and free up his shot. He can be relied upon defensively and does a good job supporting play and picking up his assignments when he needs to help out the D. Though he has played mostly wing for Djurgården’s men’s team, he’s a natural center and I’ve liked him at both positions but he projects as a center for me. He has pro quality and tools. I’ve wondered about whether his pace (he can look like he has big boots out there at times) and his playmaking are high-end enough, but he should be an excellent top-six player in the NHL who has a strong combination of size, strength, shooting and two-way play.
  • Steven Ellis at Daily Faceoff has Frondell ranked the No. 3 prospect in the Blackhawks’ system right now. Here’s what Ellis wrote about Frondell:
The Hawks wanted some size up front, and they picked up the best power forward in the 2025 NHL Draft class. At 6-foot-1 and more than 200 pounds, Frondell plays with a ton of muscle, knocking over anyone who gets in his way. That makes him especially useful when battling for possession along the boards, but he also has one of the hardest, deadliest shots of anyone in the draft. When Frondell doesn’t have the puck, he does an excellent job of getting himself into scoring lanes, especially on the right side. Frondell plans to return to Djurgardens in Sweden, but there are more than a few people who think he could crack the NHL roster immediately. Like anyone, I’d rather they be patient, especially since there’s a considerable speed and skill adjustment from the Allsvenskan to the SHL.

New Projections Have the Blackhawks NOT Finishing in the NHL Basement

The closer we get to the start of training camps, the more rankings, projections and speculation is starting to come out. Which are all interesting for Blackhawks fans to consider and file away until April.

On Wednesday morning, the wonderful folks at JFresh posted their projections for the NHL standings this season. And the Chicago Blackhawks are not the worst team in the NHL. In fact, there are four teams in their model that finish the 2025-26 season with fewer points than the Blackhawks.

image-183.png

Source: JFreshHockey on X

JFresh has the Blackhawks finishing with more points than the Sharks, Flyers, Flames and Ducks.

Yes, they still have the Blackhawks finishing last in the Central Division. And 12 points behind Nashville and St. Louis. But 75 points would represent a 14-point improvement from last year, which would be a nice move up.

It’s worth noting — which JFresh did in the thread this morning — that they tied for the most accurate projections last season. I will also note that one of their worst projections last year was for the Blackhawks, for whom they missed by 21 points. With that being said, most people missed on the Blackhawks last year because, as we have talked about a few times recently, most people liked the veteran additions the Blackhawks made last summer a lot more than they were worth to the roster over the course of the regular season.

Important fine print

They tweeted three caveats to their model that we need to keep in mind:

  1. This is based on current depth charts (from NHLRosters)
  2. Injuries/GP aren’t projected except for some guys who are out months (like Tkachuk e.g.)
  3. Rookies are at 0 WAR because I don’t have data on them and I don’t want to just guess (so Demidov, Nikishin, etc.)

I think the two teams that could see the greatest change in their projections based on young players making an impact are the Blackhawks and Canadiens. Obviously, Montreal fans aren’t thrilled with their projected last place finish; obviously having a zero for Ivan Demidov is a big reason that caveat is important to remember and recognize.

That third point is also important for the Blackhawks, who most expect to have Sam Rinzel playing a significant role on the blue line. I’m not sure if the 18 games Artyom Levshunov played in the NHL would qualify him in the 0 WAR rookie group (I did ask and will update if I get an answer). If that’s the case, he’s another young player who could make a significant impact this coming season.

There could be other rookies who impact the Blackhawks this season as well, including Oliver Moore, Nick Lardis and Samuel Savoie.

We’ve already discussed the number of veterans who could potentially depart via trade at some point during the season, and the reality that rookies/young players can and will make mistakes. Those will all play into how the Blackhawks finish the coming season in the standings. But, overall, these projections are fairly positive for the Blackhawks.
