Bills' Josh Allen not named a top-five player in NFL in 2024 by PFF

Well… Pro Football Focus made an interesting decision.

The football analytics outlet named their top-101 players from the 2024 NFL season.

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, who was named the league’s MVP, was not in the top spot.

Nor was he in the first five.

Allen was named the sixth-best player in the NFL by PFF from the 2024 season:

Adding to the PFF snub for Allen is his ranking amongst quarterbacks. The top player on PFF’s ratings is the Baltimore Ravens’ Lamar Jackson. Right in between Jackson and Allen is Joe Burrow from the Cincinnati Bengals.

Jackson could be debated as the top player, Burrow is the curious one finishing above Allen. Jackson and Allen were considered the top candidates to win the 2024 MVP,

Burrow’s Bengals didn’t even make the postseason. While Burrow had a positive year, that’s a curious call.

PFF’s full breakdown on Allen at No. 6 can be found below:

Allen earned his first NFL MVP award by ranking third among qualified quarterbacks in PFF grade and leading that group with a 93.6 rushing grade and 43 big-time throws. He is the first quarterback in PFF history to earn a 90.0-plus grade in five straight seasons, surpassing Tom Brady, who did it four times in a row from 2015 to 2018. On top of his amazing playmaking ability, Allen recorded a career-low 2.6% turnover-worthy play rate.

PFF: Bills' Christian Benford cracks top-101 NFL players in 2024

Christian Benford burst onto the scene during the 2024 NFL season, turning into one of the best defenders on the Buffalo Bills defense.

Benford, 24, was a sixth-round pick of the team in 2022. Buffalo’s top selection was another cornerback in Kaiir Elam but Benford has since turned into the Bills’ No. 1 corner.

While Benford did mostly go under radar nationally in 2024, he did receive one vote for Defensive Player of the Year.

Now Pro Football Focus has added to that.

The football analytics outlet named their top-101 players in the NFL last year and Benford clocked in a No. 67 overall:

Top 101 NFL players from the 2024 season:

#67: CB Christian Benford

— PFF (@PFF) February 19, 2025

In 15 games played, Benford had two interceptions, 10 passes defended, and a sack with 64 tackles including three for loss.

Along with his No. 67 placement, PFF reflected well on Benford in regard to his overall grade in their metrics from last season. Benford earned a 79.3 mark, good for PF’s sixth-best cornerback in the NFL in 2024.

PFF’s full breakdown on Benford from their top-101 players can be found below:

Benford was the biggest positive development in an otherwise woeful Bills secondary. He finished the regular season with the fourth-best coverage grade among qualified cornerbacks with an 82.8 mark. He also missed just two tackles all year. The only cornerback who played at least 400 snaps and bested Benford’s 2.8% missed tackle rate was NFL Defensive Player of the Year winner Patrick Surtain II.

Bills candidates for contract extensions during the 2025 offseason

Buffalo GM Brandon Beane has potential opportunities to negotiate extensions with personnel this offseason, which could be helpful to the team’s payroll.

The Bills’ front office can extend some of their talents on new deals while helping improve their salary cap situation before they finish constructing their roster via free agency and the draft.

While restructuring, trades, and cuts could be in the cards working out new deals to stretch compensation over some additional time with those who are part of the Bills’ plans beyond this season is a good place to start.

With that here are the members of the team who could be in line for a contract extension this offseason:

Source: https://billswire.usatoday.com/list...ontract-extensions-during-the-2025-offseason/

PFF: Bills' Greg Rousseau named among top-101 NFL players in 2024

Defensive end Greg Rousseau has started to make himself known around the NFL.

Following his fourth season in the NFL, the University of Miami product ranked among the top 101 players in the league according to Pro Football Focus.

In 2024, Rousseau had his best year to date. He tied his career-high in sacks (eight), while setting career highs in total tackles (53), tackles for loss (16), and quarterback hits (24).

This was Rousseau’s first time cracking the top 101 players list. He came in at number 96.

Rousseau is entering a contract year in 2025, so he is an extension candidate for general manager Brandon Beane to consider this offseason.

Among all NFL edge defenders in 2024 with at least 600 snaps, Rousseau received the tenth-highest defense grade from PFF (82.2).

PFF’s full breakdown of Rousseau from the top 101 list can be found below:

With a contract extension on the horizon, Rousseau showed exactly why the Bills should cut him a check, after earning his third-straight season surpassing an 80.0-plus overall grade. During the regular season, the 24-year-old pass-rusher generated 63 total pressures — tied for the 10th most among edge defenders.

PFF: Bills' Amari Cooper named top-10 free agent despite 2024 struggles

The Buffalo Bills reportedly are happy with wide receiver Amari Cooper but it might be difficult to keep him.

Cooper, 31 next season, is a pending free agent. Could he be one-and-done in Buffalo?

Analysis from Pro Football Focus makes it appear that it might be difficult for the Bills to keep him.

Despite admitting Cooper has had some struggles with drops and injuries after he was traded to Buffalo in 2024, Cooper is still held in high regard by PFF.

On PFF’s free agent rankings for the 2025 NFL offseason, Cooper is named the seventh-best in football regardless of position played. Among receivers, Cooper only sits behind Cincinnati Bengals wideout Tee Higgins who holds the top-overall slot.

In eight games played in Buffalo, Cooper had 20 catches for 297 yards with two touchdowns.

PFF’s full breakdown on Cooper heading into free agency can be found below:

Even at 30 years old, Cooper will be an attractive option for teams looking to improve at wide receiver, having earned a PFF receiving grade above 70.0 in every full season he has been in the league. He struggled with drops in 2024, though, failing to bring in 15.4% of the catchable passes thrown his way in the regular season.

Buffalo Bills 2025 offseason positional review: Offensive line

The Buffalo Bills offensive line underwent some changes ahead of the 2024 season. Buffalo moved on from veteran center Mitch Morse.

The interior of their line was altered, as O’Cyrus Torrence and David Edwards took on the guard position while Connor McGovern took the helm as the center. Meanwhile, the Bills returned Dion Dawkins and Spencer Brown as the bookends for the line.

All concerns regarding the changes were a bit overstated. The line gelled quickly and became a force throughout the season.

Buffalo Bills re-sign LS Reid Ferguson to four-year contract

AFC Wild Card Playoffs: Denver Broncos v Buffalo Bills

Buffalo’s longest-tenured player since 2016 returns to One Bills Drive

The Buffalo Bills announced on Saturday, March 8 that long snapper Reid Ferguson has signed a four-year contract extension. Ferguson, set to turn 31 at the end of March, is the team’s longest-tenured player, having joined Buffalo as an undrafted free agent following the 2016 NFL Draft.

This deal keeps Ferguson in Orchard Park, NY through the 2029 NFL season. Contract details were not available as of publishing. Ferguson has been a pillar of consistency, playing 131 games for Buffalo. He’s someone whose counting stats don’t begin to tell the story of his importance to the team.

Ferguson has shown no signs of slowing down at this stage, having been credited with two special teams tackles in 2024 despite the general anonymity of his position.

— Buffalo Bills (@BuffaloBills) March 8, 2025

General manager Brandon Beane has had a busy Saturday, with Reid Ferguson’s extension the second of two deals announced early in the afternoon on March 8. Defensive end Greg Rousseau has also agreed to a four-year contract extension worth $80 million, with $54 million guaranteed per sources shared with ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter.

Ferguson’s contract extension marks the four new deal Buffalo has agreed to this offseason. The Bills first inked wide receiver Khalil Shakir to a four-year extension on February 25, rewarding him with a $53 million contract that includes $31.8 million guaranteed. On Friday, March 7, Buffalo gave linebacker Terrel Bernard a four-year, $50 million contract extension with $25.2 million guaranteed.

The Bills’ 2026 free agency class is dwindling, with James Cook publicly campaigning for a new contract. Cornerback Christian Benford is also in line for a pay day and at the rate Brandon Beane is going, could be extended any second.

The Bills can’t restructure most of Josh Allen’s 2025 cap hit

AFC Championship Game: Buffalo Bills v Kansas City Chiefs

The Bills can restructure, but the salary cap is real.

I keep reading people in the comments and folks on social media hoping we are going to restructure Josh Allen’s contract to lower his cap number. Yeah, they’re going to do that, at least initially. But I also think folks are overvaluing how much space it’s going to open.

In the past, the Bills have been able to open considerable cap space with Allen restructures — up to $40 million — but all of that is catching up to them.

When you restructure a contract, you spread the cap hit out evenly over up to five seasons via a new signing bonus. This is now the fifth year of Allen’s massive extension, so five layers of signing bonus and restructures are on the books, meaning Allen is going to have the largest cap hit he’s ever had in 2025.

Here are the previous restructures and how they impact 2025

2021 signing bonus: $3.3 million
2022 option bonus: $8.48 million
2023 restructure: $5.284 million
2024 restructure: $4.175 million
2024 renegotiation: $7.5 million

That’s more than $28.7 million already locked in that they can do nothing with for 2025 plus you need to add in his 2025 cash in some fashion.

Restructuring Allen’s deal as-is would make his cap number $34.5 million. Allen’s previous high for cap figure was $30.4 million in 2024.

I also expect the Bills to pony up more money to Allen sometime this offseason when things calm down. That will raise his cap number, as well.

It’s going to be a long time until the Bills have a QB cap hit under $34 million again. It should once again show that the salary cap is very real.

Mack Hollins leaves Bills to sign with Patriots

NFL: AFC Championship-Buffalo Bills at Kansas City Chiefs

Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images

Buffalo’s “glue guy” during the 2024 season heads for new opportunities with a familiar coach

Wide receiver Mack Hollins won’t be running it back with the Buffalo Bills in 2025, as Mike Garafolo shared on Monday evening that Hollins has agreed to terms with the New England Patriots. The deal is reportedly a two-year, $8.4 million contract that maxes out at $10.4 million, per sources shared with Garafolo.

This is a move that allows Hollins to reunite with Josh McDaniels, who was his head coach while both were with the Las Vegas Raiders. That season in Vegas turned out to be Hollins’ best in the NFL, with him catching 57 passes (94 targets) for 690 yards and four touchdowns.

Hollins’ arrival at One Bills Drive immediately sparked the locker room, and he became an imperative “glue guy” during the 2024 NFL season. As the season progressed, Hollins became one of quarterback Josh Allen’s most trusted receivers in key moments, and he led the team in receiving touchdowns with five.

Hollins finishes his one season in Buffalo making 13 starts in 17 games played, catching 31 passes (50 targets) for 378 yards and five touchdowns. Hollins started two of the Bills’ three postseason games, and hauled in five catches (8 targets) for 104 yards and one touchdown
(all stats courtesy of Pro Football Reference)

Hollins’ departure is sure to resonate with Bills Mafia, who quickly too to his charismatic personality and unique views on footwear, utensils for food, and more. But the truth is that for all the fond memories fans have of Hollins the person, the Buffalo Bills now have a void to fill on offense and special teams.

What holes do the Buffalo Bills need to fill in free agency?

Arizona Cardinals v Buffalo Bills

Photo by Bryan M. Bennett/Getty Images

Brandon Beane’s work is never done — and he’ll need to leverage his steely poker face in trying to sign new talent for the Bills.

The Buffalo Bills have been busy during the opening stanza of free agency, making a concerted effort to re-sign several of the team’s unrestricted free agents before the official new league year began at 4 p.m. EDT on March 12. Retaining key contributors and signing players new to the team allows the Bills to maintain a high standard set for itself. However, general manager Brandon Beane has plenty of work to do in trying to improve Buffalo’s overall ceiling in 2025.

The goal remains “Super Bowl or bust,” and quarterback Josh Allen is focused on ending the season as the last team to get a win. Beane has already re-signed eight players from last season’s roster, with safety Damar Hamlin, running back Ty Johnson, FB Reggie Gilliam, long snapper Reid Ferguson, left tackle Ryan Van Demark, right guard Alex Anderson, tight end Zach Davidson, and quarterback Shane Buechele each set to reprise their roles in 2025.

In searching for help outside of One Bills Drive, the team has come to terms with wide receiver Josh Palmer, versatile defensive lineman Michael Hoecht, running back Darrynton Evans, defensive lineman Larry Ogunjobi, safety Darrick Forrest, and edge rusher Joe Bosa.

So what holes remain for the Bills now that the new league year has officially begun? There are more than you may realize...

(Disclaimer: Players discussed below were available when this article first published.)

The Bills need a CB2

Cornerback Rasul Douglas held down the fort at CB2 since arriving at One Bills Drive via trade during the 2023 NFL season. Douglas is an unrestricted free agent and still unsigned as of publishing this article. Does Buffalo — and defensive coordinator Bobby Babich — want to run it back with the 29-year-old Douglas, or is it time to look elsewhere for help?

While Douglas landed with the Bills via trade, cornerback Kaiir Elam found his way out of town after being traded to the Dallas Cowboys on March 12. Christian Benford is locked in at CB1 and Taron Johnson has a stranglehold on the nickel cornerback slot. That leaves Ja’Marcus Ingram, Daequan Hardy, and Te’Cory Couch as the current in-house candidates to win the currently open CB2 job.

There are plenty of options when looking outside the team — literally dozens of players between unrestricted and restricted free agents. Former Bills cornerback Dane Jackson is now an unrestricted free agent. But few would see Jackson as a starting CB2. Other available former Bills include Tre’Davious White, Siran Neal, Ronald Darby, and Stephon Gilmore.

Or could Brandon Beane work a deal to sign Asante Samuel Jr., Kendall Fuller, Shaqull Griffin, Mike Hilton, or Jonathan Jones? Regardless of the path, Buffalo needs to add talent to the CB2 competition. Right now, this stands out as the team’s most glaring weakness.

Buffalo needs another 1-Tech Defensive Tackle

The Bills really should try to find a new starting 1-tech defensive tackle, and they probably need to invest in the position both during free agency and early in the 2025 NFL Draft. DaQuan Jones returns and has been the team’s starter at 1-tech the last three seasons, but he’ll be 34 in December. He wasn’t nearly as effective in 2024, and he’s only a season older now.

Among the other candidates to fill space at 1-tech, it’s anyone’s guess who might have an edge to start next to starting 3-tech Ed Oliver. Ideally, Zion Logue is the only other player in the mold of a 3-tech.

DeWayne Carter, Branson Dean, and newly signed unrestricted free agent Larry Ogunjobi are built like and play more akin to a 3-tech. Could any of them be candidates to win the starting 1-tech role?

The Bills may be banking on Ogunjobi as the guy — but they would be well-served looking at additional options. Among the team’s defensive tackles from last season who are still available, there’s Jordan Phillips (who only wants to play for the Bills), Quinton Jefferson, and Austin Johnson. There’s also Eli Ankou to consider, who’s spent time between Buffalo’s 53-man roster and practice squad in previous seasons.

Does it make sense to run it back with any of those guys? Perhaps someone else from outside the organization like Javon Hargrave or Levi Onwuzurike would help them more fully re-make a weak spot from 2024.

The Bills need a game-changing WR

This isn’t a referendum on any of the Bills’ current wide receivers. Khalil Shakir, Keon Coleman, and Curtis Samuel all bring a ton to the table — and Shakir is Allen’s go-to. Backups in K.J. Hamler, Tyrell Shavers, and Jalen Virgil give Buffalo players to develop behind the scenes.

Last year’s midseason addition, Amari Cooper, is an unrestricted free agent. Mack Hollins left town to play for Josh McDaniels and the New England Patriots.

Beane’s first move in free agency this year was to sign Josh Palmer, and he may provide a game-breaking presence. That shouldn’t preclude the Bills from looking at other available players.

Now, maybe the move isn’t to bring back Stefon Diggs, but there are plenty of other talented players available. The group is loaded with older players, however.

Cooper Kupp is looking for a new opportunity after being released by the Los Angeles Rams. Kupp is an immensely talented receiver with great hands, and he’s a voracious run blocker as well — but he also turns 32 in June. Keenan Allen, Tyler Lockett, Diontae Johnson, and Brandin Cooks are among a host of other receivers looking for new contracts. There’s also former Bills in Robert Woods and even Marquez Valdes-Scantling to consider.

If they don’t add another player during free agency, perhaps the route is landing one during the draft. With Josh Allen at quarterback, the move should always be to find exceptional talent at receiver.

Are the Bills set at Safety?

Yes, Buffalo re-signed Damar Hamlin to a one-year contract, and they also added Darrick Forrest — who received his own one-year deal. But neither of those players are signed beyond 2025, and it’s anyone’s guess as to how coaches see them moving forward.

Hamlin was a starter last season, missing only a few games due to various injuries. He re-claimed the starting role once healthy, which speaks to his work ethic. But it’s clear Buffalo’s still looking for its next long-term safety tandem. Apart from Hamlin and Forrest, Taylor Rapp (2024 starter), Cole Bishop, and Cam Lewis round out the room. Who among these five are starting Week 1? Rapp is likely locked in as strong safety, but as a rookie Bishop couldn’t unseat Hamlin.

Does the addition of Forrest change the outlook at safety? He brings starting experience, but wasn’t a featured starter in 2024. Would Beane re-consider things with Mike Edwards, who’s once again available? It didn’t go well thanks to injuries last summer. Jordan Poyer is also available, but what does he have left in the tank as a soon-to-be 34-year-old safety? It didn’t end all that well, either, so why would Poyer and his core entourage seek a return to a potentially contentious situation?

Other available players include Julian Blackmon, Justin Simmons, Quandre Diggs, and Jordan Whitehead.

Taken to task, most would say that safety remains a concern, but Rapp is a huge hitter when healthy and Hamlin brings a lot to the table as a sound tackler with the ability to diagnose and call coverages for the back seven. At minimum, this will again be a group to keep a very close eye on throughout the offseason.

Who will be the Bills’ new Special Teams Gunner?

Mack Hollins is gone, and he was good as a gunner. Hollins was good at most things, and absolutely adored by Bills Mafia and his teammates alike. Is this a position Buffalo feels content filling among the current roster? Time will tell if Shavers, Hamler, or Forrest take up the mantle at gunner.

Are the Bills considering other free-agent EDGE options?

Is Buffalo done signing edge rushers? Buffalo has made plenty of moves at EDGE, signing Greg Rousseau to a contract extension, as well adding free agents out of Los Angeles in Michael Hoecht and Joey Bosa. A.J. Epenesa and Javon Solomon round out the team’s current defensive end / edge rusher group.

That said, it would be wise for Buffalo to consider adding more veteran talent at the position. Maybe that’s Von Miller returning on a new, more affordable deal in line with his situational status? There’s also Dwayne Smoot who showed well with the Bills in flashes during 2024.

There may be some merit in looking at available vets such as Azeez Ojulari or Charles Omenihu. Bosa was a massive signing for Beane, but there are rightful concerns about his recent injury history. The wild card in all of this could be Hoecht, given his ability to play multiple positions — including nickel cornerback.

What are your thoughts as free agency hits primetime? How would you rate the needs listed above, and would you prioritize any other positions in place of these? It’s a lot to take in, and important to remember that the Bills don’t have to solve everything through free agency.

That said, it would be nice to see Brandon Beane head into the NFL Draft with almost every option on the table.

Buffalo Bills signing another WR, per reports

A pre-draft favorite with many Bills fans in 2020, Shenault joins his fifth team as he begins year six.

The Buffalo Bills are signing wide receiver/return specialist Laviska Shenault Jr., per a report by Tom Pelissero. Many readers will recall Shenault’s name, with him being a popular prospect with Bills Mafia ahead of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Buffalo will be the fifth team to roster Shenault, who’s entering his sixth season in the NFL. To say things haven’t worked out well for the former Colorado receiver would be an understatement. Initially drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in Round 2 at 42 overall, Shenault showed promise in two seasons with Jacksonville — starting 22 of 30 games played and catching 121 passes (179 targets) for 1,219 yards with five touchdowns (all TDs came his rookie season); adding 29 rushes for 132 yards.

Following the 2021 NFL season, Shenault was traded to the Carolina Panthers — a team in near-full roster disarray at the time. At the end of two seasons with the Panthers, Shenault had made just 37 receptions for 332 yards and one touchdown; plus 21 carries for 120 yards and a touchdown.

Shenault went on to play for Seahawks and Chargers in 2024, but was an afterthought as an offensive weapon. What he’s continued to provide in recent stops is a decent presence as a return specialist. His go-to has been kick returns since arriving in the Carolinas. In total, Shenault has picked up 708 yards on 25 kick returns with two touchdowns, and a long of 97 yards. His best season returning kicks was in 2024, where he brought back 16 kickoffs for 459 yards and that career-long 97-yard touchdown streak.

Almost every Bills fan right now wants to know if “X” receiver is a “burner,” or if he makes his living off contested catches. Shenault’s pre-draft numbers imply the latter: 6’5/8”, 227 pounds; 31 7/8” arms; 9” hands; 4.58 40-yard dash; 1.61 10-yard split; 2.67 20-yard split

The first question many will ask is why general manager Brandon Beane signed Laviska Shenault. Well, there are 90 roster spots (91 including International Player Pathway Program) and the Bills have less than 70 players signed to the roster at this time. The other idea to consider is all about darts. This is perhaps a dart toss, hoping to see something in Shenault similar to what he showed with the Jaguars.

There’s no reported need for Buffalo to look at replacing Brandon Codrington as the team’s primary return specialist, but the Bills may like the idea of seeing how Shenault fits in as a guy who showed promise at receiver in college and early in the NFL — and who now does well returning kicks.

View this less about replacing existing players in key positions and more about opportunity for both the Bills and Shenault to see what, if anything, sticks. What registers with you on the news that Shenault is set to join the Bills this offseason?

Buffalo Bills DL Michael Hoecht suspended six games to begin 2025 NFL season

The native Ontarian will have to wait a bit longer to make his regular-season debut with the Bills at Highmark Stadium

The Buffalo Bills will begin the 2025 NFL regular season with a key free-agent addition. During his press conference on Friday, March 14, general manager Brandon Beane informed reporters that defensive lineman Michael Hoecht will serve a six-game suspension for a failed test involving performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs).

Hoecht is the second player facing a PED suspension that Buffalo’s front office has signed during the latest free-agency period. Defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi will also miss the first six games of the regular season.

Beane revealed that One Bills Drive knew of Hoecht’s failed test and pending suspension, and still felt comfortable signing him to a four-year contract. The team was unaware of Ogunjobi’s situation, as the test had just come back as he was agreeing to terms with Buffalo.

Under the rules of this suspension, Hoecht (and Ogunjobi) will miss the first six games, being placed on in-season Injured Reserve — and will not count against the team’s 53-man active roster while suspended. He cannot be at any of the team’s facilities the first four weeks, but may return to practice with the Bills for the fifth and sixth week of the suspension.

Hoecht will be eligible to return in full and make his regular-season debut with the Bills in Week 7 at the earliest. Hoecht will be allowed to train with the team and attend all offseason sessions, and can participate in training camp as well each preseason game.

It’s not an ideal beginning for Hoecht, given the team’s investment in him. Unlike Ogunjobi’s one-year contract Buffalo at least signed Hoecht to a multi-year deal, so there’s more opportunity for a return on investment.
