5 keys to Bengals beating the Dolphins

gettyimages-2252079909.jpg

Will the Cincinnati Bengals get back in the win column with a trip to Florida?

Offensive Connections

The offense was out of sync last week. Burrow was missing protection calls, he wasn’t spinning the ball how he likes it, and receivers were dropping catchable balls.

They cannot afford to have games like that, particularly this deep into the season. Burrow came out of the gates hot with that win over the Ravens the first time around, but since then, the offense has been in September mode.

This team is built around its passing game. They cannot drop the ball (literally and figuratively) and expect to win.

Run It Back

Until a few weeks ago, the Bengals’ running game was starting to look pretty good, and offensive line coach Scott Peters was starting to look very good. Now, they are back to producing modest returns in the run game and lacking in both consistency and explosive runs.

Chase Brown is a playmaker. They have got to get the scheme right in front of him and utilize his talents in order to win this week.

Turnovers

Turnovers will make or break this team. The defense isn’t overflowing with talent, but when they create turnovers and give the offense more opportunities, they can win football games.

Conversely, turnovers have cost this team greatly over the past two weeks. They cannot throw multiple interceptions, particularly pick-sixes, and expect to win games.

Defense Rises

No one wants to hear it, but this defense is getting better.

Myles Murphy is looking very good. Kris Jenkins has shown improvement, too. Demetrius Knight just had the best game of his career.

The defense is playing better and maxing out the talent that they have.

They aren’t world-beaters, but they need to continue this upward trend.

Complementary Football

The defense isn’t going to be perfect, but neither is the offense. When one struggles, the other needs to pick them up.

The defense can’t let an offensive turnover turn into a score.

The offense must respond when the defense gives up points.

Bengals vs. Dolphins Thursday Injury Report: Defensive line banged up

imagn-25074673.jpg

The Cincinnati Bengals take on the Miami Dolphins on Sunday in a game featuring two teams eliminated from playoff contention. Miami will be starting a rookie quarterback and both teams seem to have a fairly lengthy injury report.

For the Bengals, defensive tackles B.J. Hill and Kris Jenkins Jr. missed their second consecutive practices on the week. The interior of the Bengals’ defensive line could be extremely thin if they can’t play Sunday. We could see some defensive lineman called up from the practice squad.

Furthering the concerns on the defensive line, Joseph Ossai (ankle) also missed practice. The Bengals are already down Trey Hendrickson, so Ossai missing the game is an extra hit to the pass rush rotation.

Wideout Tee Higgins (concussion) was limited again and is still actively in the NFL’s concussion protocol. Given the severity of his first concussion and him feeling symptoms over two weeks later, the Bengals wouldn’t catch much flack for sitting him another week.

Wide receiver and return man Charlie Jones (ankle) was also out.

Several players showed on the injury report, meaning they got treatment for an injury, but practiced in full.

For Miami, safety Minkah Fitzpatrick (calf) missed his second-straight practice. Arguably Miami’s best defender, his absence could be an advantage for the Bengals’ pass-heavy offense.

Linebacker Jordyn Brooks (foot/knee) was also out for the second straight day, as was cornerback Isaiah Johnson (knee).

3 key players for Bengals vs. Dolphins

Can Demetrius Knight Jr. put together back to back impressive performances?

The 4-10 Cincinnati Bengals will travel to Miami to face the 6-8 Miami Dolphins. There really isn’t anything on the line in this game for either team. The Dolphins have decided to go ahead and bench Tua Tagovailoa, opting to start rookie Quinn Ewers in his place this week. The Cincinnati Bengals have said they plan to start Joe Burrow for the rest of the season.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at three key players for the matchup this week.

Joe Burrow

I normally wouldn’t even put Joe Burrow as a key player; that is typically assumed. With that said, his recent comments and performance have been a bit uncharacteristic. The Bengals are coming off a shutout loss to Baltimore, losing 24-0. Burrow had two interceptions and was sacked three times during the game.

Burrow also threw two interceptions in the previous game versus Buffalo. If the Bengals are going to keep playing Burrow down the stretch, I am at least hoping to see some fun football out of this offense. The performance versus Baltimore was unacceptable. I expect Burrow and the rest of that offense to bounce back this week versus the Dolphins.

Myles Murphy

Murphy is coming off a two-sack performance against Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens. Murphy has looked like a building block for this defense going forward, the past couple of months. Murphy will need to continue applying pressure to opposing quarterbacks, but will also have to be a big factor against De’Von Achane and the Miami rushing attack this week.

Demetrius Knight Jr.

Knight recorded the first two sacks of his career against the Ravens. I will be watching this week to see if he can build on that success. The Bengals desperately need to find out who they feel can continue moving forward with these last few games of the season. Hopefully, Knight can show that he has what it takes to at least be one starting-caliber linebacker for this team heading into next season.

Bengals vs. Dolphins Friday Injury Report: Tee Higgins questionable; Shemar Stewart good to go

gettyimages-2229029497.jpg

The Cincinnati Bengals are getting some help on the defensive line this week, but will still be missing a couple of key pieces, per the teams’ injury report.

Rookie defensive end Shemar Stewart will be back in the lineup Sunday after missing time with what has just been revealed to be a torn PCL. The rookie missed time with an ankle injury earlier in the season, but is now back in the fold and able to prove himself in the final three games.

Wide receiver Tee Higgins (concussion) practiced on Friday, but remains in the NFL’s concussion protocol, per Head Coach Zac Taylor. It seems that Higgins intends to play, but it would all be dependent on clearing concussion protocol. He is listed as questionable.

Per Taylor, Defensive tackle B.J. Hill (ankle) will attempt to play and is listed as questionable, while Kris Jenkins Jr. (ankle) will head to injured reserve, ending his season.

Pass rusher Joseph Ossai (ankle) will be out, as will Noah Fant (ankle), Charlie Jones (ankle) as ankle injuries seem to ravage the Bengals’ roster.

For Miami, safety Minkah Fitzpatrick (calf ) is out, sidelining one of their best defensive players.

After a lengthy injury report on both sides, Miami has Fitzpatrick out, five other players questionable and the rest of the players have no game designation.

Bengals placing Kris Jenkins Jr. on injured reserve

gettyimages-2243681105.jpg

The Cincinnati Bengals have called off the season for second-year defensive tackle Kris Jenkins Jr.

On Friday, head coach Zac Taylor announced the Bengals were placing Jenkins on injured reserve with an ankle injury that caused him to leave Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens.

Since players have to spend at least four weeks on injured reserve before they can possibly return to the team, it means he will miss the remaining three games.

It wasn’t exactly a great season for the young player. He was a pretty good run defender, but forgettable as a pass rusher. Missing these last few games’ worth of snaps is a disappointing end for his development.

The defense didn’t look any better this season, and the coaching staff and front office should be examining each player on an individual level to see where competition needs added. It is hard to say the team shouldn’t bring in competition at the defensive tackle spot right now.

With Jenkins out, that means McKinnley Jackson is in for a bigger role over the next three games after asking for a trade earlier this season due to a lack of playing time.

Zac Taylor says Shemar Stewart will be available Sunday. Kris Jenkins will be put on IR today. "Look forward to seeing him continue to grow in his third year (in 2026)."

Twitter reactions to Bengals’ dominating win over the Dolphins

imagn-27865925.jpg

The Cincinnati Bengals finally seemed to have a complete game against the free-falling Miami Dolphins, but in the end, it was too little too late. They are already eliminated from the postseason, and even this dominant a win doesn’t clear any confusion with the Dolphins benching their starter for a seventh-round rookie.

The offense and defense both played well against the Dolphins, especially with a dominant third quarter with 21 unanswered points. The Bengals still have two more games to evaluate the roster and try to figure out who is worth bringing back among the coaches and the players.

The best test for the Bengals will be this coming week against a Cardinals team that has had some solid offensive performances with Jacoby Brissett. It could also be a big deal for the Bengals’ draft slot, with them currently around pick 10, behind the Cardinals. If they play as they did against the Dolphins, they can probably secure a win and build some confidence in the defense before the offseason, after the rough start to the year.

With that said, let’s take a look at the Twitter reactions to the Bengals week 16 game.

Dolphins offered Bengals 4 1st-Round picks prior to 2020 NFL Draft for Joe Burrow selection

imagn-19143379.jpg

This won’t be surprising for those who paid attention at the time of the 2020 NFL Draft. ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reports the Miami Dolphins offered the Cincinnati Bengals four first-round picks for the No. 1 overall pick, which was obviously quarterback Joe Burrow out of LSU.

What might be surprising is that that is all they offered. The Dolphins had five first-round picks between the 2020 and 2021 NFL Drafts. Even that wouldn’t have done it, as the Bengals were not having any of these negotiations

The Bengals declined to even engage in discussions and shut down the trade inquiry before it could gain any traction, according to sources.

Again, none of this is surprising, given how many people were saying the Bengals should take whatever bounty the Dolphins offered, since they needed to fill so many holes outside of Burrow.

Well, five seasons later, Burrow is a top quarterback who ended Cincinnati’s playoff drought, took them to a Super Bowl, and another AFC Championship game.

Miami made the playoffs twice without a win and is benching Tua Tagovailoa ahead of Sunday’s game against the Bengals.

Safe to say the Bengals made the right call in never even letting the Dolphins get past calling to inform them of what they were willing to offer initially.

Also, Burrow got to avoid the quarterback graveyard that is Miami post-Dan Marino.

Any chance to laugh again in the face of people who said Cincinnati should trade the pick away with any seriousness. And a lesson that stockpiling picks doesn’t always mean you can go get whatever pick you want.

Joe Burrow: “I’m having fun playing football”

imagn-27865754.jpg

See what happens when you play complimentary football? Your franchise quarterback has fun playing the game he’s played his whole life.

Joe Burrow threw for 309 yards and four touchdowns, without an interception, as the Bengals beat the Dolphins 45-21 in Miami on Sunday.

“That’s how it’s supposed to look like,” Burrow said. “That’s what it’s supposed to feel like. So, we’ve got to keep that feeling going the next couple of weeks and build some momentum.

“I’m having fun playing football,” Burrow said. “Not playing football is not fun. Sitting in the locker room rehabbing all day, that’s not why you do it. This is why you do it right here.”

This is Burrow’s second game with four touchdown passes in three weeks, giving him 10 in his previous four games since returning from a turf toe injury.

While the Bengals will miss the Playoffs for a third straight season, Burrow reminded everybody on Sunday why he is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.

You just hope the Bengals front office can, like they did in 2021, build a strong team around him. We have seen what Burrow can do when he doesn’t have to be perfect and has a really talented team around him.

Myles Murphy continues his ascension as a key piece of the Bengals defense

gettyimages-2249359817.jpg

Myles Murphy has been playing at a really high level over the past couple of months. The third-year defensive end has been a true difference maker as both a pass rusher and against the run. There is no doubt the Bengals will be picking up his fifth-year option prior to training camp next year.

Murphy didn’t have a ton of opportunities to rush the passer on Sunday, with the Dolphins rushing the ball and using quick game until things got out of hand for them in the second half. Murphy finished with just two pressures on the game, a week after having two sacks. His presence was still felt, with him consistently drawing extra attention from tight ends and running backs when the Dolphins dropped back to pass.

Myles Murphy finished the game with a team-leading five stops against the run. He had an incredible 90.0 overall grade per PFF, mainly due to his impact slowing down the dangerous Dolphins rushing attack. Below are some of those impactful plays against the run from Myles Murphy on Sunday.

The one trait I have admired most from Murphy has been his continuous effort on the field. It was evidenced earlier in the season when he chased down Derrick Henry 40 yards down the field to make a tackle, on a drive that eventually ended with a Bengals interception instead of a touchdown for the Ravens. He is constantly running toward the ball, which led to a fumble recovery against the Dolphins.

In another frustrating season, the development of Myles Murphy has been a bright spot. Hopefully, the Bengals can start seeing some similar progression from this year’s first-round pick, Shemar Stewart, over these last couple of weeks.

Bengals Dominate Dolphins, 45-21 in Miami: OBI podcast

imagn-27866091.jpg

After a mega-disappointing game against the Ravens that eliminated the Bengals from the playoff, Cincinnati had a huge rebound of a game against the Dolphins. Cincinnati went to South Beach and took it to the Dolphins, 45-21.

Chase Brown had a career day, while Joe Burrow and other stars made their share of plays in the win. To boot, the Cincinnati defense had a big day, making Quinn Ewers’ first career NFL start largely miserable.

Is this the kind of performance that inspires hope for 2026? Is the type of game that saves the jobs of people supposedly on the hot seat?

Bengals Rookie Report vs. Dolphins

gettyimages-2249362988.jpg

The Bengals played nine rookies in this game, which is pretty impressive considering that they only had six picks in last year’s draft.

First-round pick Shemar Stewart had two tackles, including a tackle for a loss. That is pretty underwhelming considering that Joseph Ossai was out. Stewart made the start and played 30 snaps, second only to Myles Murphy among defensive ends.

Second-round pick Demetrius Knight continued to show development and versatility. He had four tackles, including 3 solo tackles. Fourth round selection Barrett Carter had five tackles, only one of which was solo. The pair has been widely criticized, and PFF hates them, but after some early turbulence, they have balanced out their developmental curve. These rookie linebackers played a large role in frustrating the Miami rushing attack.

Dylan Fairchild has really come along this season. The third rounder has locked down the left guard position for the Bengals in a way that no one has since Kevin Zeitler. He continues to impress in pass protection and has shown signs of development as a run blocker.

Fifth-round pick Jalen Rivers came in for Fairchild late. The once-time starter at right guard is showing that he can do the job on either side.

It seems weird to say that Tahj Brooks saw his first real action on offense when he only played six snaps, but those six snaps led to four carries. It’s tough to judge a running back in a limited sample, but Brooks’s 1.8 yards per carry and long of three yards were uninspiring to say the least.

Well, that is all of the draftees. Of course, UDFA William Wagner has been another star rookie, locking up the long-snapper job. This week, he nailed four long-snaps and seven short-snaps.

Howard Cross took a significant 41% of defensive snaps. On his 24 snaps, he was involved in 3 tackles. The UDFA from Notre Dame has shown himself to be more than just Al Golden’s guy. He can compete at the defensive tackle position, particularly against the run.

Then there is a rookie who only took 12 snaps, but hey, that’s pretty good for a guy they picked up off waivers just this week. Keyshawn Williams. While not being targeted in his four reps on offense, Williams made an impact on special teams. He returned one punt for 26 yards and averaged nearly that on his three kickoff returns, which included a long of 31 yards. In all, the former Steeler had 102 total yards on four combined returns.

Another rookie was called up from the practice squad, but was inactive for this game, and that was Bralyn Lux. Lux was likely called up due to the uncertainty of DJ Turner’s availability for this one, but when Turner was cleared, the rookie corner found himself sidelined.

Bengals News (11/25): Joe Burrow sticks up for snubbed defensive back

gettyimages-2253037207.jpg

Joe Burrow’s Comments Highlight an Overlooked Area of Bengals Defense

“Our defensive backs have been playing well all year,” Burrow said. “Obviously, DJ (Turner), in my opinion, has been one of the best corners in the league this year. And Dax (Hill) is really coming into his own. I think JD (Jalen Davis), in the slot, has really made some big plays for us the last couple of weeks since he’s been in there. Can’t remember exactly what the first game that he was in, but all he’s done is made plays. And those guys are always around the ball, making it difficult and making tackles when the guys do catch it. I thought they’d been lights out for the last eight to 10 weeks.”

Bengals QB Joe Burrow explains latest cleat change post-injury

On mobility, Burrow said this: “Certainly not as mobile as I have been in the past, but mobile enough to make a couple plays every game.“

Bengals’ biggest Pro Bowl snub is inexcusable and reminiscent of another injustice from several years ago

The strongest case for Bengals player to make the Pro Bowl with Chase belonged to Turner simply because he’s been one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL this season. He remains the league-leader in passes defensed (17), has hauled in two interceptions, and only 49.1% of passes targeted his way have been completed. He also boasts a Pro Football Focus coverage grade of 77.1.

Bengals’ Christmas arrives early in mind-blowing Lamar Jackson rumors

“A major problem, a lot of it on the Ravens, is that there are team rules and then there are rules for Jackson. That’s why Baltimore practices in the heat of the afternoon instead of in the morning. Once the Ravens become critical of Jackson, he becomes more withdrawn. It’s a shame because Jackson isn’t a mean-spirited person, just an overgrown kid in an adult’s body.”

Bengals vs. Cardinals Injury Report: BJ Hill, Joseph Ossai DNP

imagn-27487786.jpg

The Cincinnati Bengals and Arizona Cardinals have released their Christmas injury report ahead of their Week 17 matchup.

Well, sort of.

While the Cardinals did practice on Thursday, the Bengals did not practice. Instead, they released a simulated injury report.

On said report, BJ Hill, Cam Grandy, Charlie Jones, and Joseph Ossai all received a second consecutive DNP, so their status for Sunday is in doubt.

Noah Fant and Matt Lee remained limited for a second straight day. Everyone else looks good to go on Sunday, so the Bengals may only have two defensive starters out in Hill and Ossai, plus the loss of their top returner in Jones.

As for the Cardinals, Budda Baker, Paris Johnson, Josh Sweat, Kei’Trel Clark, and Evan Brown all sat out a second straight practice and are trending toward missing Sunday’s game.

Kelvin Beachum got a second rest day off, so he doesn’t appear to be in danger of missing this week’s game.

Cincinnati Bengals 2026 NFL Draft prospects to watch in Ohio State vs. Miami playoff game

imagn-27728908.jpg

The Ohio State Buckeyes will face off against the Miami Hurricanes on Wednesday, December 31st, in the quarterfinals of the college football playoffs. This game will be loaded with talented draft prospects on both teams.

Rueben Bain Jr. is coming off a three-sack performance against Texas A&M in the first round of the playoffs. There has been a lot of discussion about his limited arm length. For me, I just see a darn good football player. He has really good bend with a thick lower half. He has a powerful bull-rush, active hands, and won’t even turn 22 years old until September.

Caleb Downs is a safety prospect from Ohio State that most fans are already familiar with. Geno Stone is scheduled to be a free agent after the season. The Bengals will need to upgrade the position via free agency or the draft. Downs is known as a coach on the field. He is consistently in the correct position to make plays, is a reliable tackler, and makes the players around him better.

Arvell Reese is a hybrid linebacker/defensive end who could stick at either one at the next level. While he hasn’t been nearly as dominant in the second half of the season, he has traits galore that will see him drafted within the first ten picks of the draft, most likely. Reese is a physical downhill presence against the run that has flashed his pass-rushing prowess with 6.5 sacks on the season. Reese would be a player who would fill the viper role in Al Golden’s defense if he became a Cincinnati Bengal.

Francis Mauigoa is an offensive tackle for the Hurricanes. He has started during all three years he has been at Miami at right tackle. He is a mauler in the running game, blocks well out in space, and had an incredible 88.8 pass blocking grade during the regular season in 2025. Some analysts project him to slide inside to guard. If the Bengals do not sign Dalton Risner, he could become a more realistic option for Cincinnati.

Kayden McDonald is a run-stuffing defensive tackle for the Buckeyes. He is an anchor against the running game in the middle of a defense. He can get some push up the middle at times with power as a pass rusher, but that isn’t going to be what gets him drafted highly this year. The Bengals are expected to keep TJ Slaton next season, but that is the last year of his deal. If McDonald were somehow available in the second round, that would be hard to pass up.

Kayden McDonald is great at absorbing double teams, holding the point of attack, and is tops in the draft class with a 13.6% stop rate as a run defender in 2025. pic.twitter.com/K1KeSgwODz

— Bengals & Brews (@BengalsBrews) December 21, 2025

Sonny Styles is another potential first round prospect on the Buckeye defense. The converted safety has taken another huge step in his development at linebacker this year. He is constantly making the right run fit, hasn’t missed a single tackle on the season, and is expected to be an elite tester at the combine.

Sonny Styles (#6) is a converted Safety with freak athleticism at 6’4 235 lbs. that put up 100 tackles and 6 sacks in 2024 and should be even better in his second season as a full-time Linebacker. — Bengals & Brews (@BengalsBrews) July 22, 2025

Akheem Mesidor is an older prospect for the Hurricanes who plays opposite of Rueben Bain Jr. on the defensive line. While he will be turning 25 soon, his ability as a pass rusher could still make him a top 50 draft selection this year.

Akheem Mesidor is an older prospect that will be turning 25 this year, has 30 career sacks, is a physical finisher in the backfield, and has a 29.9% win rate on true pass sets this season. pic.twitter.com/WaCXfjtBVr

— Bengals & Brews (@BengalsBrews) December 20, 2025

Keionte Scott is a talented cornerback for the Hurricanes. He has the versatility to play in the slot, on the outside, or at safety. The Bengals have a similar player in Dax Hill. That type of versatility, his physicality against the running game, and his leadership qualities all make him a prospect trending upward.

— Andy (@AndyyNFL) December 20, 2025

The Buckeyes have a physical cornerback of their own, sometimes to the detriment of the team. While he has cut down on pass interference penalties, he is still too grabby down the field. Some would argue it is better to have to teach a guy to be less physical, than to not have that physical nature to begin with. Igbinosun has great size and length for the position. His competitive nature on the field might be a welcome addition to the team.

I think Davison Igbinosun has the most upside in this CB class pic.twitter.com/kQK5HDDrjv

— James Foster (@NoFlagsFilm) September 19, 2024

The Bengals could be losing Trey Hendrickson and Joseph Ossai after the season. Ohio State has a pair of defensive ends that they might be interested in. Kenyatta Jackson Jr. is the better pro prospect, while Caden Curry has been the more productive player this year.

— Bengals & Brews (@BengalsBrews) December 21, 2025

The last player I will spotlight for this game is defensive tackle Ahmad Moten. Moten has legitimate pass rush juice from the interior at defensive tackle. He has one of the highest pressure rates in the country at 25.4% on the year. He has posted 4.5 sacks on the season. He also has a 74.3 run defense grade. If he declares, he could end up being a day two draft pick that would fit well on the Cincinnati Bengals defensive line.

Bengals now the clear winner in Logan Wilson trade with Cowboys

gettyimages-2248442973.jpg

While the Bengals’ trade of Logan Wilson was not met with favorable reactions by the majority of the fanbase directly after it happened, it seems the Bengals knew exactly what they were doing on this one.

The Cincinnati defense has played better as a whole the last couple of months. The play of Barrett Carter and Demetrius Knight Jr. has still been inconsistent, at best. However, it was clear Logan Wilson was not going to be part of the future here. Getting the young guys’ snaps was important for a defense that is looking for pieces to build around going forward.

At worst, they may have a better idea of what they need to do at the position moving forward. Wilson had already been benched and was clearly not willing to be a locker room leader like he initially said he would be.

The Bengals were able to get a 7th-round draft pick in exchange for Wilson. They also cleared $2.684 million in cap space this season. They will also have an additional $2.55 million in cap space for next season.

Meanwhile, Wilson has not been the impactful linebacker the Cowboys were hoping for. The Cowboys have had issues at linebacker all season, yet Wilson did not log a single snap during the Cowboys’ most recent game.

Logan Wilson did not play a snap for the #Cowboys yesterday.

That means two of the worst defenses in the league have completely benched him in 2025.

It's over.

— Marcus Mosher (@Marcus_Mosher) December 26, 2025

I guess the saving grace for Wilson and his wife is how much they have enjoyed the Dallas area and facilities, because his time as a starting linebacker in the NFL appears to be over.

Joe Burrow praises Myles Murphy

gettyimages-2249363261.jpg

“The Dead Cat Bounce” has been a term often used with the Cincinnati Bengals—an often-cynical phrase talking about the Bengals’ ability to end lost seasons in a strong way, thus saving jobs that other franchises would have cut the cord.

In a way, it happened last year, with the team’s five-game win streak to end the year, and the Bengals’ defense making leaps from those seen early in the year.

It’s happening again in 2025—especially on defense—even though the team was eliminated from the playoffs far earlier than in 2024. And, certain younger defensive players have started to bring pleasant surprises with increased playing time this year.

One of those players who has risen to prominence over the end of the past two seasons has been 2023 first-round pick, Myles Murphy. He had three sacks as a rotational player as a rookie, but injuries and wallowing on the depth chart hurt his progress in 2024. While he flashed at the end of the year, some wondered if then-coordinator Lou Anarumo’s penchant for preferring veterans over high picks was an issue with Murphy’s development.

Murphy’s progress in 2025 hasn’t gone unnoticed. Be it by the pundits, the masses, or even Bengals star quarterback, Joe Burrow, No.99 has garnered rightful attention and accolades.

“I think Myles Murphy has really shown a lot the last couple of weeks,” Burrow told the media at a recent press conference. “I don’t know anything about the scheme or what his responsibility is on plays. I just see him making plays and impacting the game in a lot of different ways. You can say that for a lot of guys. A lot of young guys that are starting to step up that way.”

The unfortunate injury to Trey Hendrickson and an overall battered Bengals defensive line has given Murphy the opportunity to start eight games (the first starts of his career) for the Cincinnati defense this year. He has responded well, logging career-highs in sacks (4.5), tackles (41 total), tackles-for-loss (five), and quarterback hits (nine).

While it’s unclear what the future holds for Hendrickson and the Bengals this offseason, if Murphy continues to ascend, they have a nice piece on the defensive line. The Bengals also used a 2025 first-round pick on another EDGE in Shemar Stewart, who has potential, but has similarly faced injury and depth chart issues early in his rookie year.

Since the Bengals are officially out of playoff contention, they are, at least partially, in 2026 roster assessment mode in these last two games. Teams have until May 1, 2026 to exercise the fifth-year option on 2023 first-round picks, so these final two weeks will be critical for Murphy to continue to show progress.

Regardless, it’s great to see Murphy start to see his potential with increased snaps. He has made the most of his opportunities and run with them this year.

This isn’t to say that the Bengals shouldn’t continue to bolster the defensive line this offseason (Hendrickson and/or otherwise), but Murphy should be in the future plans and with increased snaps. If Murphy continues to develop and they can get more from Stewart next year, Cincinnati could have a nice couple of young options for the years ahead.

Report: NFL teams will inquire about Joe Burrow’s trade availability this offseason

imagn-27864905.jpg

When he is healthy, Joe Burrow is arguably the best quarterback to currently play football on the planet. Unfortunately, a myriad of severe injuries dating back to his rookie year have caused him to miss significant time, and thus, eliminating the Bengals from playoff contention in those seasons.

Upon returning from a toe injury and surgery this season, Burrow arrived earlier than expected with a bang, beating the Ravens on Thanksgiving Night soundly. But two subsequent rough losses led to Burrow making some eyebrow-raising comments about the “fun” element of the game.

The buzzards that are NFL executives are circling over Paycor Stadium, as recent reports have many NFL teams exploring an offseason trade situation with the Bengals and Burrow. CBS Sports Insider, Jonathan Jones, says the Bengals should expect to get a flurry of calls from a bunch of teams this winter and spring.

The Bengals should be prepared for teams to call plenty this spring in an attempt to trade for Joe Burrow. That and more at @NFLonCBS https://t.co/HWq7jbTBxt

— Jonathan Jones (@jjones9) December 27, 2025

While this seems extremely unlikely for the Bengals to spring for a trade of their franchise quarterback, there are teams that have plenty of draft ammunition to make an appealing case. The Jets, in particular, hold a high pick in this year’s draft, as well as a myriad of other high picks from their fire sale before this year’s trade deadline.

New York is one of a few teams starving for a quarterback like Burrow, and their push will likely be a slew of picks, as well as the slant of Burrow’s missed time. But if we know the Bengals, they are often hesitant to part with their stars, particularly on others’ terms.

For a bit of history, Duke Tobin, the Bengals’ current de facto G.M., was hired in the 1999 offseason. He was, at a minimum, part of the decision to decline the New Orleans Saints’ offer of a slew of picks in that draft for the No. 3 overall pick Cincinnati held in that class. The decline led to their drafting of quarterback Akili Smith.

With much of the current brain trust seeming to remain in place in 2026 after a disappointing year, a blockbuster trade for Burrow once again seems unrealistic. However, that doesn’t mean Cincinnati shouldn’t expect Hail Mary-like calls for Burrow this offseason.
