25 Bold Predictions For The 2025 NFL Season

gettyimages-1943420366.jpg

Football fans, we’ve made it! The start of the 2025 NFL regular season is here, and with a new season comes renewed optimism for the majority of fan bases around the league. Although one person can’t script the entire season before it happens, many of us try our best to forecast what we believe will happen. I am not different.

The best thing about the NFL is that even when your favorite team is struggling, there are always plenty of storylines around the league that make each week worth watching. With an 18-week regular season ready to kick off this week, let’s dive into 25 bold predictions for the 2025 season.

1. The Buffalo Bills will win the AFC… And the Super Bowl.

I’m starting this thing off with a bang… Or maybe I just refused to bury the lede? I’m not sure which one it is, but either way, yes, you read that right: The Bills will finally overcome their post-season woes against the Kansas City Chiefs and deliver a Super Bowl to Buffalo.

2. If Matthew Stafford’s back can hold up, the Los Angeles Rams will win the NFC.

Before the start of training camp, I felt much more confident about projecting the Rams as the NFC winners. Stafford will be good to go for Week 1, but relying on a 37-year-old quarterback with back issues can be a difficult task. Either way, I’m going to stick to my guns here and say that the Rams will be back in the Super Bowl this season.

3. The race for the No. 1 pick will be between three teams… And no, it will not be for Arch Manning.

Surveying the field, there are multiple contenders for the worst team in football (aka the No. 1 overall pick). Of those teams, I’ve got the New Orleans Saints, Cleveland Browns, and New York Giants as the three teams who will fight it out for the rights to make the first selection of the 2026 NFL Draft. Oh, and it won’t be Manning walking on stage to hug Roger Goodell. He’ll be back in Texas for his second full season of starting for the Longhorns.

4. Mike McDaniel will be the first head coach to be fired in-season this year.

Call me a skeptic, but I don’t see how things don’t fully implode in Miami this year. General manager Chris Grier has made some questionable decisions over the last few years, including choosing to pay aging veterans over retaining his own talent. Tyreek Hill still isn’t happy, and Tua is another concussion away from Zach Wilson playing the rest of the season. Plus, that secondary is a mess. As someone who has seen multiple locker rooms in Chicago implode, this has the makings of an early disaster in Miami.

5. Anthony Richardson will regain the starting quarterback role in Indianapolis by mid-October.

There’s no denying that Richardson has been one of the worst quarterbacks in the league since being drafted No. 4 overall in 2022. That said, there’s no way that anyone can convince me that Daniel Jones, out of all people, is going to be the guy to stave off a Top 5 pick for more than six games, much less an entire year. Any time a head coach comes out and says they are committed to a starting quarterback for the whole year, it never ends well. This won’t either. Get your resume ready, Chris Ballard.

6. Of the 12 playoff teams from 2024, only two will not return in 2025.

Over the last six years, an average of six new playoff teams have emerged each year. It can always be challenging to project such turnover, but that’s what makes the league’s parity such a decisive factor in the NFL. This year, those numbers will plummet. Call it a byproduct of a weak free agent market, or a lack of creativity on my part. Either way, that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.

7. Jaxson Dart will become the starting quarterback for the Giants by November. Possibly with an interim head coach leading the team.

Above, I predicted that the Giants would once again finish among the bottom three teams. Sure, they have a great defense, but I’m not buying what they are doing on offense. Russell Wilson is what he is at this point. There’s a reason the Pittsburgh Steelers lived through another Aaron Rodgers soap opera to “upgrade” their quarterback room. After an impressive preseason from Dart, it won’t take long for the noise to grow too loud if they aren’t winning. Don’t be surprised if that’s done without Brian Daboll in the building.

8. Six head coaches will lose their jobs in 2025, with one surprise name headlining the group.

Admittedly, I’m probably a little over my skis with this prediction, but what’s a list of bold predictions without a few truly bold predictions? Similar to the NFL’s new playoff team trend, the league has averaged around six new openings per season. So, the sheer number isn’t the surprise here. There are plenty of “top candidates” to don this list, but I’ll give you one name that I think could be there without a big season: Kyle Shanahan. The partnership of Shanahan and general manager John Lynch is likely to come to an end without a playoff berth, but if things get bad enough, don’t be surprised if the 49ers completely hit the reset button.

9. The most improved team in the league will be… The Chicago Bears.

Yes, I write about the Bears. Yes, this could be seen as homerism, but I don’t care. The Bears have had plenty of coaches of the year in the past, and there will be plenty of eyes on Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams. Although I don’t have the Bears projected to make the playoffs, I do have them registering their first winning season since 2018. The NFC North is tough, and their schedule isn’t easy, but this should be a team that is viewed as a riser heading into next offseason, and Johnson will be a big reason why.

10. The team with the No. 1 overall pick in April will be… The New Orleans Saints.

A few predictions back, I laid out my bottom three teams for the 2025 regular season. For as much as I wanted to pick the Cleveland Browns as the worst team in the league, it’s hard to ignore how bad most of the Saints roster is. Admittedly, I’m also not a believer in the Kellen Moore hire. Thus, I anoint the Saints as the holder of the top pick in next April’s draft.

11. Rookie running back Ashton Jeanty will lead the league in rushing.

Will this happen? I don’t know. Is it a real possibility? Absolutely. I firmly believe that Pete Carroll will have the Raiders rounding into form sooner or later, and a significant part of that will depend on their ability to establish a strong run game. I’m still not a big believer in the offensive line, but I respect Geno Smith’s ability as a passer too much to dismiss the idea that they’ll be balanced enough to keep Jeanty from facing too many loaded boxes. I still think the Raiders will regret not taking an offensive lineman instead of Jeanty, but here we are.

12. The Detroit Lions offense won’t finish in the Top 10.

I’m not discounting the overall talent that the Lions have all over their offensive depth chart, but I refuse to believe that John Morton is going to step in and take over where Johnson left off seamlessly. There’s a reason Johnson was the top head coaching candidate for the last three years and why Morton hasn’t been an NFL coordinator in close to a decade. Couple that with some key changes on the offensive line, and there’s going to be some regression here. There’s too much variance not to.

13. There will be just one rookie pass catcher to eclipse 1,000 yards receiving in Year 1.

I’ll be the first to say, I wasn’t overly impressed with the top-end of this receiving class, and unless you’re Brock Bowers, the chances of being a rookie tight end with 1,000-plus yards are slim to none. My money is on one of Tet McMillan or Matthew Golden being the player to do it.

14. Nico Collins will lead the NFL in receiving yards.

Although there’s plenty of hype surrounding players like Ja’Marr Chase and rightfully so, Collins is a player who was well on his way to outpacing everyone before going down with an injury last year. Over the first four games of the season, Collins had 489 yards on 30 receptions, which averaged out to 2,078 yards over the course of a 17-game season. With a healthier season and an offense that should get back on track, my money is on Collins to take the crown this year.

15. The Philadelphia Eagles will snap a 21-year trend: Repeating as NFC East winners.

With the Giants far more likely to fire a head coach mid-season than win the division, and the dumpster fire going on in Dallas, the NFC East feels like a two-team race. The Washington Commanders were a pleasant surprise last year, making plenty of noise in the playoffs. However, they have the league’s oldest roster and have historically performed well in unfavorable situations. Counting on that to happen again in 2025 is a risky move. Plus, why bet against last year’s Super Bowl winner?

16. Caleb Williams will become the first 4,000-yard passer in Bears’ franchise history.

Some believed it could happen last year, but as we saw, retaining Matt Eberflus as head coach, hiring Shane Waldron to call plays, and trading for an over-the-hill, slow receiver in Keenan Allen was not conducive to a productive offense. Oh, not to mention a porous offensive line. With one of the NFL’s best offensive minds calling plays, a completely rebuilt interior offensive line, and more skill position talent than Bears fans have ever seen in Chicago, it feels like now or never for that long-standing record to go out the window. The table is set, it’s all on Williams now.

17. Following a year of fatigue, Lamar Jackson will once again be the MVP.

I said it at the time (and many disagreed with me), but Jackson should have been the MVP last season. I know that it’s hard to win in back-to-back years, and Josh Allen was deserving (in a sense), but I’m expecting Jackson to reclaim the award once again in 2025. Baltimore was fortunate to retain offensive coordinator Todd Monken for another year, which was a significant boost to the potential of this offense.

18. The Year Of The Passer: There will be 13 quarterbacks to throw for over 4,000 yards.

2024 was a down year for NFL passing games overall. There were just six 4000-yard passers last year, which was the lowest since 2010, when just five quarterbacks eclipsed that mark. Like most NFL trends, the tide is due to turn soon, and with all the promising quarterback talent in the league, 2025 will be that season.

19. 2025 will be the final year for three veteran quarterbacks.

With so many young quarterbacks coming into the league and taking over starting jobs, the era of older quarterbacks is slowly ending. That means players like Aaron Rodgers (42 in December), Joe Flacco (40), and Stafford (37 with a bad back) are on borrowed time. Rodgers has already said this will likely be his last year, and after the season Flacco is about to endure in Cleveland, it’s easy to see him finally hanging it up. The truly “bold” prediction here is Stafford, but it’s hard to imagine he’ll play much longer if his back issue lingers, especially if the Rams win the Super Bowl.

20. The top regression candidate for 2025 is… The Washington Commanders.

I’m still projecting them to make the playoffs, but if there was one team I could see taking a big step back in 2025, it has to be the Commanders. Last year was miraculous on multiple levels, but history shows that they are due for some regression. The bigger question is: how much? They’ll have the oldest roster in the league, and it’s hard to imagine them replicating the same fourth-down success. Not to mention Jayden Daniels. He’s an outstanding quarterback, but would it surprise anyone if he followed a similar trend to C.J. Stroud and took a step back in Year 2?

21. The Kansas City Chiefs will miss the AFC Championship game… Finally.

Count me out as someone who is already writing the Chiefs’ demise in the AFC West. Now, don’t get me wrong, it should be a strong division, but until proven otherwise, Kansas City will be considered the cream of the crop. That said, history shows that teams can only get to the Championship game so many times in a row. At some point, there’s got to be a slip-up, and this will be the year where they’ll miss on the top seed in the AFC and lose in the divisional round to the Bills.

22. Five rookie quarterbacks will make starts this year, with two coming from one team.

This wasn’t a highly regarded class by any means, but as usual, there’s always going to be a quarterback crisis. Because of that, it feels like we’ll see plenty of rookies make at least one start this year, even if it’s just Cam Ward who will be on the field for Week 1. In the end, Ward, Jaxson Dart, Tyler Shough, Dillon Gabriel, and Shadeur Sanders will all make starts in 2025. We’ll see if anyone (outside of Ward) can establish themselves with a bigger role in 2026.

23. Travis Hunter won’t win a “Rookie of the Year” award but will be regarded as the best of his class in Year 1.

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen a two-way player at the NFL level. The fact that Hunter is even attempting is will be extremely fascinating to watch. In time, I do not doubt that he’ll be able to carve out a specific role on both sides of the ball and become elite at one position (or both), but in Year 1, fans should temper expectations. Being above average at both positions would be more than fine, but it’s unlikely to win any awards unless he’s a standout on one side of the ball.

24. Joe Brady will be next year’s coaching cycle’s hottest candidate.

Call it a product of winning the Super Bowl, but I consider Brady’s rise much more about teams being convinced after seeing him do it for another year. Every year, we see the top offensive minds in football emerge as the hottest candidates. If Monken were 10-15 years younger, he would have had a job last year. With Johnson off the market and no real college candidates expected to make the jump, it’s Brady’s turn to be the apple of the league’s eye.

25. My predictions for division winners, the playoffs, the Super Bowl, and regular season awards:

AFC Playoff Picture – NFC Playoff Picture:

1. Buffalo Bills – Philadelphia Eagles

2. Baltimore Ravens – Los Angeles Rams

3. Kansas City Chiefs – Tampa Bay Buccaneers

6. Cincinnati Bengals – Detroit Lions

7. Los Angeles Chargers – Arizona Cardinals

Cowboys vs Eagles: NFL Season Kickoff Open Thread

gettyimages-2230815718.jpg

The 2025 season kicks off tonight with an NFC East showdown between the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles and their rivals from Texas, the Dallas Cowboys.

Dallas owner Jerry Jones shipped off some of the game’s expected star power when he traded perennial Pro Bowler Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers. The Cowboys still have Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb, and a May trade brought them another offensive weapon in George Pickens, but their defense — now led by former Bears head coach Matt Eberflus — will struggle to get after the quarterback.

The Eagles have a stacked roster on both sides of the ball, and they blew the Cowboys out last year in both games by a combined score of 75 to 13, but those were without Dak. The only chance Dallas has would be if Prescott can put up Madden-like numbers, but I don’t see them having enough to hang with Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley, A.J. Brown, and the Philly offense, or be able to score enough on Vic Fangio’s defense.

Enjoy the game in our open thread, and keep in mind that all open threads are rated WCG-MA.

Three Player Props to Play: Vikings at Bears

gettyimages-2229996995.jpg

A new era of Chicago Bears football kicks off on Monday night as Ben Johnson and the Chicago Bears welcome the Minnesota Vikings.

Last season, we gave out three player props for each Chicago Bears game. We hit nearly 70% of what I would call 50-50 props last season, and hopefully, we will continue on the hot streak for 2025.

So let’s dive into it. Here are some player props to consider playing this Monday night.

D’Andre Swift OVER 53.5 Rushing Yards -114

This number surprised me. The Chicago Bears have a thin running back room right now. Both Roschon Johnson and Kyle Monangai have missed the last few weeks with injuries, and D’Andre Swift has largely been the only healthy running back on the roster. That doesn’t mean that Johnson and Monangai won’t see the field if they are healthy enough to play, but you have to consider that the team’s RB1 will be out there and an even higher percentage of the snaps than he would be most weeks.

Combine that with the fact that the Chicago Bears have totally revamped the offensive line and Ben Johnson has made it very clear that he plans to establish the run in these football games, it feels like Swift is going to see at least 15 carries in this game, maybe close to 20. If that’s the case, you have to figure he clears north of 60 yards. If you want to look at alternate yards for Swift, you can get him at +188 above 70 yards, and that would be one to consider as well.

Olamide Zaccheaus OVER 18.5 Receiving Yards -140

You may have to look beyond FanDuel for this one, but if you can find it, this is my favorite prop of the week. Not just for Bears- Vikings, but for the entire NFL. Zaccheaus has been active in preseason and in training camp and has constantly been out with the 1s in practice. He’s regularly involved in the game plan, and while eventually Colston Loveland and Luther Burden will see their snapcounts increase and Zaccheaus may see his role diminish because of it, I think Zaccheaus has a larger role in the Bears offense the first month or so of the season than the books realize right now.

I think Zaccheaus clears this one easily. I think he probably is closer to about 40 yards receiving, and he might even have this over cleared for you by halftime.

PARLAY: Caleb Williams over 175 Yards, DJ Moore over 40 yards receiving, D’Andre Swift over 30 yards rushing -109

For our final selection, we are betting on the functionality of the Chicago Bears’ offense. We are looking at utilizing the team’s top passer, to pass catcher, and top rusher to all clear lower ALT lines and give you a near even money return.

The Bears’ offense last season was completely dysfunctional. The Bears’ offense may not light the league on fire starting in week one, but you can bet that Ben Johnson is going to make sure this unit looks like a professional unit. We are asking Caleb Williams only to go north of 175 yards passing, DJ Moore over 40 yards receiving, and D’Andre Swift over 30 yards rushing. If the offense looks like a professional unit, there’s no reason to think all three of these individuals won’t clear these thresholds.

Take the low thresholds, parlay them together, and you should get them near -110 at FanDuel and profit from it when the Bears offense looks vastly improved on Monday Night Football.

Win, Score: 24-10. Caleb throws for a TD and rushes for a TD – his first rushing TD of his career. JJ McCarthy throws three picks.

Sunday, September 14th, 12:00pm CST, the Chicago Bears @ Detroit Lions.

Loss, Score: 28-35. Caleb throws for two TDs and an interception. Goff throws for three TDs as the Lions roll at home.

Sunday, September 21st, 3:25pm CST, the Dallas Cowboys @ Chicago Bears.

Win, Score: 32-17. Caleb throws for 300 yards and three touchdowns; the Bears pick off Dak twice to win the turnover battle and the game.

Sunday, September 28th, 3:25pm CST, the Chicago Bears @ Las Vegas Raiders.

Win, Score: 24-10. Defense gives Geno Smith fits. Caleb throws for a TD and rushes for a TD, but also throws an interception in the red zone. Bears overcome it to beat the Raiders.

Sunday, October 13th, 7:15pm, the Chicago Bears @ Washington Commanders.

Win, Score: 28-24. Coming off their bye week, Bears get revenge for the Hail Mary game by defending Daniels’ Hail Mary attempt at the end of the game. Caleb throws 2 TDs.

Sunday, October 19th, 12:00pm CST, the New Orleans Saints @ Chicago Bears.

Win, Score: 35-13. Me and my son at his first game in Soldier Field watch as the Bears steamroll the Saints. Caleb again eclipses the 300 yards mark and throws three TDs. Saints turn the ball over four times. They are well on their way to the #1 overall pick.

Sunday, October 26th, 12:00pm CST, the Chicago Bears @ Baltimore Ravens.

Loss, Score: 10-28. Ben Johnson and Caleb have their first big set back of the season as Caleb fails to throw a touchdown and turns the ball over twice (one fumble, one interception). Lamar and Derrick Henry run all over the normally stout Bears run defense. It’s a bad day for the Bears.

Sunday, November 2nd, 12:00pm CST, the Chicago Bears @ Cincinnati Bengals.

Win, Score: 31-28. Caleb gets back on track, throwing two touchdown passes, but fumbles the ball on a Hendrickson sack. Burrows and Chase run the Bears defense ragged, but Bears eek this one out on a late Cairo Santos field goal.

Sunday, November 9th, 12:00pm CST, the New York Giants @ Chicago Bears.

Loss, Score: 17-24. Caleb takes four sacks as the Giants front four dominate the game. He throws for a TD and an interception. Jaxon Dart throws for two touchdowns in the second game of his career, having taken over for the injured Russell Wilson.

Sunday, November 16th, 12:00pm CST, the Chicago Bears @ Minnesota Vikings.

Loss, Score 17-21. Bears offense can’t get on track against Flores exotic pressure packages. Vikings lean heavily on Jordan Mason in the run game. Caleb is intercepted late in the game driving for the go-ahead score. First back-to-back losses of the season for the Bears.

Sunday, November 23rd, 12:00pm CST, the Pittsburg Steelers @ Chicago Bears.

Win, Score 24-10. Caleb has a bounce back game – with 300 all purpose yards and two touchdowns. Bears intercept Rodgers twice and shut down the Steelers running game. Rodgers no longer owns the Bears.

Sunday, November 28th, 2:00pm CST, the Chicago Bears @ Philadelphia Eagles.

Loss, Score: 17-33. Barkley and Hurts prove too much for a beaten up Chicago Bears defense. Bears move the ball but have trouble connecting in the endzone. Caleb throws for one TD and one pick.

Sunday, December 7th, 12:00pm CST, the Chicago Bears @ Green Bay Packers.

Win, Score: 28-13. The Bears shock the Packers as they pick off Jordan Love three times, and Caleb throws for a TD and rushes for a TD to carry the Bears to victory. Caleb remains undefeated at Lambeau Field.

Sunday, December 14th, 12:00pm CST, the Cleveland Browns @ Chicago Bears.

Win, Score: 42-3. Bears put the hurt on the Browns, who still have not figured out their QB position. They give Sanders a go and it’s a disaster – four interceptions. Caleb throws three touchdowns and eclipses the 350 yards passing mark.

Saturday, December 20th, TBD, the Green Bay Packers @ Chicago Bears.

Win, Score: 21-13. With both teams battling for playoff positioning, it’s a tight defensive battle. Caleb leads the Bears on a touchdown drive in the 4th quarter to put the Bears ahead by eight. Bears defense makes a goal line stand against the Packers to secure the victory.

Sunday December 28th, 7:20pm CST, the Chicago Bears @ San Francisco Forty-Niners.

Loss, Score 17-31. The Bears struggles on the Bay continue. Rush defense is hurt with Billings out of the game due to injury. Caleb throws two interceptions.

Sunday, January 4th, TBD, the Detroit Lions @ Chicago Bears.

Win, Score: 31-28. Ben Johnson notches his first victory against his former team, as Caleb throws for 400 yards and three touchdowns in a shooting match between two teams bound for the playoffs. In the end, it is the Bears who emerge victorious, on a trick play to Luther Burden, III in the 4th quarter, sealing both the victory and the NFC North divisional championship for the Chicago Bears.

FINAL 2025 RECORD FOR THE CHICAGO BEARS: 11 – 6.

WCG Predicts Chicago Bears vs Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football

gettyimages-2191690368.jpg

Alright, Chicago Bears fans, we have a new weekly roundtable for you – predictions for the Chicago Bears games. The first of the series will be for the Chicago Bears vs. the Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football to cap week one of the 2025 NFL season. Our writers may give score predictions, fantasy studs and duds, outstanding performances, particularly how the QBs perform, and anything else that strikes their fancy. Here are our predictions for Bears vs. Vikings, Week One:

Lester: I not only have the Bears covering the 1.5 spread this week, but give me them to win outright. I like Chicago’s tight ends to have a big game on Monday off a heavy dose of play action.

Bryan: Bears cover the spread and win outright. D’Andre Swift is a fantasy stud with a focus on the run game and plenty of targets in the passing game.

Ryan: Bears cover and win the game. Swift has one of his best games that we’ve seen in a Bears uniform, and Colston Loveland arrives on national television with a great outing. 27-24.

Josh: I think Caleb stumbles at a couple of big moments, but the inexperience of McCarthy shows up equally big. The Bears pull off an ugly 20-17 win, and both teams vow to get better moving forward.

Sam: Roast me all you want, I need to see it before I believe it. There are going to be growing pains just like there have all summer. I think the Bears lose this one, but it’s close. Minnesota 21, Bears 17. I think Rome has a fast start to the year.

GOOCH: For myself, the absence of TJ Edwards has me rethinking the low score I had for the Vikings in this first encounter. I still think that JJ McCarthy is going to have a typical rookie outing – I have him throwing one TD pass against two interceptions. And Caleb is going to pass for at least two TDs against the Flores defense. I think the score will be tighter than I had thought: 24-17, Bears over the Vikings. I’m also going to predict two sacks for Montez Sweat and a +80-yard game for Rome Odunze.

Chicago Bears vs. Minnesota Vikings: Week 1 Players to Watch

gettyimages-2229997180.jpg

The NFL season is an evolving state of affairs. Week 1 offers more unknowns than any other, especially when considering new players, coaches and schemes.

In this weekly series, I’ll be featuring one player from each team on each side of the ball who I figure to be integral to their respective teams’ success. Like seasons past, you won’t see any QBs and you also won’t see any star defensive players like Micah Parsons and Nick Bosa.

No, these are more of the unsung variety. Yet, often just as critical to the success of the team.

Let’s get started with the Chicago Bears.

Offense: Colston Loveland, TE

gettyimages-2231404768.jpg

Whenever you add a first round pick that’s a weapon like Loveland, most eyes will be on the shiny new toy for any offense. While I can’t wait to see his pristine route running (especially for a TE) on display against the Minnesota Vikings, what I am looking forward to most is seeing how Ben Johnson deploys his young Tight End. With starting LT Braxton Jones not exactly instilling the utmost confidence in the coaching staff, I expect both Loveland and incumbent starter Cole Kmet to help in-line as a blocker against the potent pass rush of the Vikes. Stud pass rushers Jonathan Greenard, Andrew Van Ginkel and last years first rounder Dallas Turner combined for 5 sacks against us in the two games played. Expect Loveland to be moved all around the offense to keep the D honest and get plenty of quick passes as an extension of the run game that is dealing with some injuries. But how Loveland (and Kmet for that matter) holds up on the edge when blocking will be most curious to watch for me. And quite possibly most critical for our success on offense this week.

Defense: Grady Jarrett, DT

gettyimages-2226510789.jpg

When the former All-Pro and two-time Pro Bowler was brought in this off-season on a 3 year $42,750,000 contract it was clear this staff believes he can still be a difference maker along the D line. Early indications reveal they were right from the way he has been reported to perform in practice in addition to recently being voted by his teammates as a team captain.

Chicago was in the bottom five last season league-wide in both rushing yards against and rush yards per carry allowed. Jarrett was brought in to help stop the run but will also be leaned upon to apply some pressure in the passing game. Considering starting LB TJ Edwards is doubtful for the game and rookie Ruben Hyppolite II is likely to be thrown into action early, Jarrett’s performance will be key to ensure the LB’s can do their jobs.

Minnesota Vikings

Offense: Jordan Mason, RB

gettyimages-2230697457.jpg

Though the Vikings were in the bottom half of the league when it comes to rushing offense in both yards and yards per carry in 2024, they performed very well against us. In the two games, starting RB Aaron Jones Sr. totaled 192 yards on 40 carries (4.8 yard avg.) and had a rushing TD in each game. It was his backup, Cam Akers that struggled with a paltry 3.3 yard average despite a long of 15 yards. Enter Jordan Mason who spelled the oft-injured Christian McCaffrey last year and put up a very impressive 789 yards on 153 carries (5.2 yard avg.) and 3 rush TD’s.

Mason was brought in on a very respectable 2 year $10+ million contract and figures to be a large part of the rushing attack, especially in week 1 where the Vikings new starting QB will be making his first start in Primetime on the road against a rowdy rival. Considering Aaron Jones Sr. enters his age 30 season, I would not be surprised if Mason takes over as lead back sooner than later but either way, fully expect him to be heavily involved in this one. How the Bears can contain both backs will be critical, but Mason could be the spark needed for Minnesota who is also going to be without their WR2 in Jordan Addison.

Defense: Joshua Metellus, S

gettyimages-2192060010.jpg

One of the few “chess-piece” type players on defense league-wide, Metellus is used all over Brian Flores’ defense. Listed at Safety, but plays Nickel cornerback, Linebacker and pass-rusher on occasion, Metellus is a one-man wrecking crew. Last season against Chicago, Metellus tallied 17 total tackles in two games, the most of any Viking, frequently stopping receivers for little to no yards after catch and blowing up run plays before they could get going. With more of a run focus and play-action pass game expected, and with long-time captain Harrison Smith out this week, Metellus figures to be right in the middle of the action. Be it covering Swift out of the backfield or shadowing Kmet or Loveland from TE. If Metellus can be neutralized, I like Chicago’s chances. If Flores and Metellus are one step ahead of Caleb Williams and Co., it could be a long night at Soldier Field.

What about you? Which players on both sides will you be focusing on? Let us know in the comments!

Week 2 WCG NFL Power Rankings

gettyimages-2233077672.jpg

There’s no better feeling in life than the start of a new NFL season, is there? Well, maybe there is, but the start of football signals new hope and a changing season. For NFL fans, the beginning of a new season sparks optimism and a renewed interest in their favorite teams. No matter how good or bad your favorite team is expected to be, the first few weeks of a new season are the most fun. In my opinion, the league didn’t let its fans down in Week 1, with plenty of close games, exciting plays, and even surprising results. It’s best to never overreact to the opening week of the season, but it’s part of a 17-game formula that crafts our Power Rankings, so let’s dive in!

1. Philadelphia Eagles (1-0)

Was it perfect for the Eagles on Thursday night against the Cowboys? No. This team also lost several key players on both sides of the ball in free agency. The talent is there, and so is the coaching. Sometimes it takes teams some time to get going at the start of the season. The Chiefs have been a prime example of that lately, consistently making it to the Super Bowl. The biggest question moving forward will be getting the defense back on track, which they did in the second half.

Next up: At Chiefs

2. Buffalo Bills (1-0)

Has there been a better Sunday Night Football opener than what we saw in Week 1? The Bills were down 15 points with under a half a quarter to go, and somehow came out on top against an elite Ravens team. Quarterback Josh Allen was outstanding when it mattered, and he received help from some unlikely friends, including fifth-round tight end Jackson Hawes. Sunday’s 15-point comeback was further validation that this could be the year the Bills finally get over the hump in the playoffs.

Next up: Vs the Jets

3. Green Bay Packers (1-0)

The Packers were a blocked field goal away from going 0-6 in the NFC North a year ago. Add in Micah Parsons, a struggling Lions team, and their first home season opener since 2018, and you get a dominating divisional win that made a statement to the entire league. The Packers offense is rarely a question, but if this defense can reach a Top 3-5 status, they might finish the year as the NFC favorite. Avoiding the Week 1 overreactions is key, but it’s hard to find a more impressive 60-minute performance from the season-opening.

Next up: At Commanders

4. Los Angeles Chargers (1-0)

Speaking of statement wins, Jim Harbaugh continues to impress with a quick turnaround in Los Angeles. Quarterback Justin Herbert was slinging the ball around without a care in the world, and that defense is still excellent. With all of the talk about Denver challenging for the AFC West crown, did we overlook the Chargers? We’ll see soon, but Friday was a great start in the right direction.

Next up: Vs. Raiders

5. Kansas City Chiefs (0-1)

I’m still not anywhere close to being in the camp that believes the Chiefs’ downfall is coming anytime soon. They are still an outstanding team with some apparent flaws, but every team in the NFL will have flaws. The last time they played in Week 1, they won the Super Bowl. The bigger concern on Friday night was their inability to get after the quarterback. Well, that and the health of Xavier Worthy. Either way, they should be fine, but they’ll be thin at receiver for the next month.

Next up: Vs Eagles

6. Baltimore Ravens (0-1)

Week 1’s Sunday night shootout might have been exciting for most NFL fans, but it’s hard to imagine that the Ravens come out of that game sharing the same excitement. They blew a 15-point fourth-quarter lead in a game that they thoroughly controlled throughout. The Ravens are no strangers to slow starts, but luckily for them, they’ll host the Browns in Week 2. There’s no reason to think that the Ravens won’t be primed for another deep playoff run in January, though.

Next up: Vs Browns

7. Washington Commanders (1-0)

Washington came into Week 1 with the league’s oldest roster, and it really wasn’t even that close. The good news for them is that their quarterback and other key players are still young. That, and they’ve got plenty of cap flexibility moving forward. Although it didn’t result in a blowout on Sunday, there was never a doubt who was in control of that game. We’ll see how this group holds up as the season progresses, but so far, so good. A big test awaits in a short week against Green Bay.

Next up: Vs Packers

8. Los Angeles Rams (1-0)

It wasn’t the prettiest of performances for the Rams, but it shouldn’t come as a surprise after quarterback Matthew Stafford missed almost all of training camp with a back issue. In the end, their defense performed well, and Stafford delivered when he needed to. The Rams could be gearing up for a tight divisional race, but assuming they hit their stride, they appear to be in perfect shape moving forward. They’ll have yet another favorable matchup in Week 2, even if it’s on the road.

Next up: At Titans

9. Minnesota Vikings (1-0)

It was an ugly first three quarters for the Vikings, but they figured it out in the fourth quarter, scoring 21 unanswered points on their way to a 27-24 victory at Soldier Field. Quarterback J.J. McCarthy made his first-ever NFL start and delivered when it mattered the most in the fourth quarter. There’s no question this is one of the league’s most talented teams, but much of their pending success will rely on McCarthy’s development.

Next up: Vs Falcons

10. Denver Broncos (1-0)

Is the defense elite? Absolutely. Do they have one of the more talented rosters in the league? Yes. Despite that, winning by eight points against a rookie quarterback who couldn’t get the ball out of his hands isn’t ideal, especially when their own second-year quarterback had such a poor performance.

Simply put, Bo Nix is going to need to be much better if they are going to come close to being considered a contender in the AFC. The defense is there, as is the rest of the infrastructure. The rest is up to Nix.

Next up: At Colts

11. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-0)

It wasn’t pretty, but in the end, they got the win off a missed field goal. The offense started slow, but the defense held its own for the majority of the game. In the end, the Bucs profited from a young offense that is still finding its way, and in Week 1, that’s completely fine. As the offense gets healthier, fans can expect this team to round into form. Week 2 should be a fun test.

Next up: At Texans

12. Detroit Lions (0-1)

Disastrous is the one way to describe the Lions’ season opener on the road against the Packers. They looked out of sorts from the start and never figured it out. Only time will tell how much the impact of losing both coordinators (and numerous assistant coaches) will have, but for now, Lions fans must sit through a rough week. On the plus side, they’ll host the Bears in Week 2. The loser of that game will move to 0-2 within the division and conference, creating a big hole to open the season.

Next up: Vs Bears

13. Pittsburgh Steelers (1-0)

Is Aaron Rodgers back? It certainly seemed like his vintage self en route to a four-touchdown performance on Sunday afternoon against a rebuilding Jets team. Even with all of the optimism surrounding the offense, the defense did not look good against an offense that wasn’t expected to do much, especially so early in the season. The Steelers have the talent, but most of their stars are aging. This might be their last legitimate shot at a run, so getting to 1-0 was a good start in the right direction.

Next up: Vs Seahawks

14. Cincinnati Bengals (1-0)

Looking back at the box score, it’s hard to believe the Bengals were out-gained by so many yards, yet still won the game. It’s no secret that Cincinnati struggles out of the gate, so a win is a win, especially with history showing that they tend to heat up as the season moves on. Joe Burrow will need to be better, and it’s fair to expect him to be. The offense isn’t the big question, but it was a positive (overall) day for the defense. They have a real chance to get to 2-0, which would be a massive boost for their early-season playoff hopes.

Next up: Vs Jaguars

15. San Francisco 49ers (1-0)

It wasn’t pretty, but in the end, the 49ers pulled off a big win to open up the season. 49ers fans breathed a sigh of relief when Christian McCaffrey played, and another one when tight end George Kittle was deemed healthy after leaving the game with an injury. San Francisco is one of the more interesting teams in the league, with the talent to win the division, but the injury history to finish out of the race yet again. Good luck trying to figure out where they’ll land.

Next up: At Saints

16. Arizona Cardinals (1-0)

Heading into the season, the Cardinals were at the top of my list of teams that could see a big jump in 2025. While I’m still fully confident in that feeling, they didn’t exactly light the world on fire in Week 1. Quarterback Kyler Murray threw for less than 200 yards and took too many sacks. This team should continue to round into form and will have a favorable Week 2 matchup at home.

Next up: Vs Panthers

17. Houston Texans (0-1)

The offensive woes in Houston continued to persist at the start of 2025, mainly due to an offensive line that is still simply not good enough. Quarterback C.J. Stroud didn’t have a strong game and was once again sacked too much. The defense is more than good enough to keep them in games, but the offense needs to start taking steps forward soon. Luckily, they are in a division without another clear contender.

Next up: Vs Buccaneers

18. Seattle Seahawks (0-1)

Despite leading for the majority of the game, two unfortunate events occurred, and the Seahawks found themselves at 0-1 heading into a pivotal Week 2 matchup on the road against the Steelers. The defense played well enough to win, and quarterback Sam Darnold had his moment. Between San Francisco’s improbable touchdown catch and Darnold’s fumble at the end, sometimes teams just have to accept it wasn’t meant to be. We’ll see if they can rebound.

Next up: At Steelers

19. Atlanta Falcons (0-1)

Atlanta might not have won the game, but second-year quarterback Michael Penix looked great. I’m still unsure what the ceiling is for this Falcons team, but it’s considerably higher if Penix proves to be Top 10 at the position. Younghoe Koo’s missed kick to send it to overtime hurts, but fans should feel good about how they looked for the majority of the game.

Next up: At Vikings

20. Jacksonville Jaguars (1-0)

The Liam Coen era got off to a solid start on Sunday after a dominant 26-10 win at home. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence didn’t need to do anything special, especially after Travis Etienne rushed for 143 yards on 16 carries. More importantly, the defense showed significant improvements, which will be key to any success they have this season. Week 2 will be a much bigger test on the road against the Bengals.

Next up: At Bengals

21. Indianapolis Colts (1-0)

Who had Daniel Jones as a front-runner for MVP after Week 1? Just kidding, of course, but he was good in his debut with the Colts. Rookie tight end Tyler Warren was involved early and often, and as a whole, they dominated from start to finish against Miami. We’ll see what happens when they start playing better teams, but it’s hard to ask for much more from Jones and a team that is facing profound changes without a winning season.

Next up: Vs Broncos

22. Las Vegas Raiders (1-0)

All Pete Carroll does is turn football organizations around. Despite being the oldest head coach to lead a new team, things already look far different from what they did over the past few years. Having a reputable quarterback like Geno Smith helps, and the defense also looked the part. The biggest concern I’ll continue to have with this team is the offensive line. Smith was sacked four times, and rookie running back Ashton Jeanty averaged just two yards per carry on 19 attempts.

Next up: Vs Chargers

23. Chicago Bears (0-1)

The start of the Ben Johnson era was promising, as the team’s first offensive drive of the game resulted in a touchdown. Then the offense started struggling, but the defense looked flat-out dominant. In the end, it all fell apart in the fourth quarter, once again leaving more questions than answers. At this point, it seems clear that this is going to be a process for Johnson and his staff to get this team on track.

Next up: At Lions

24. Dallas Cowboys (0-1)

In fairness to the Cowboys, they hung around with the Eagles much better than almost anybody expected them to. Quarterback Dak Prescott appeared to be back in form, and there’s plenty of talent on the offensive side of the ball. The biggest question will continue to be on the defensive side of the ball. Defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus made some nice second-half adjustments, but he made a fatal error on third down to effectively end the game. The offense will keep them in games as long as Prescott is healthy, but will it be enough to win games? We’ll see.

Next up: Vs Giants

25. New York Jets (0-1)

Of all the rebuilding teams coming into the season, the Jets were far and away the most competitive. Although that might be a surprise to some, first-year head coach Aaron Glenn was highly regarded coming from Detroit. Most importantly, offensive coordinator (and first-time play caller) Tanner Engstrand had the offense humming from their opening drive. Quarterback Justin Fields also looked much improved. Despite the loss, Jets fans should feel good coming out of Week 1.

Next up: Vs Bills

26. New England Patriots (0-1)

Some viewed the Patriots as a team that could have a quick turnaround, while others, like myself, saw this as a rebuilding team that was still a year or two away. A significant component of their future is second-year quarterback Drake Maye, who was uneven at best on Sunday. New England had chances to win the game, but a severe imbalance of play calling on the offensive side of the ball (50 pass calls to 18 runs) is not going to be a recipe for success moving forward. We’ll see how they look against a lowly Dolphins team.

Next up: At the Dolphins

27. Tennessee Titans (0-1)

Are the Titans a work in progress or yet another product of a team that had no business taking a quarterback at No. 1 overall? Although they hung tight with the Broncos for most of the game, rookie quarterback Cam Ward was running for his life, while being sacked six times for a loss of 50 yards. To make matters worse, he had a 42.8% completion rate and finished the game with a QBR of 7.4. Better times should be ahead, but the Titans haven’t exactly been the model of stability.

Next up: Vs Rams

28. Carolina Panthers (0-1)

Was the Panthers’ disjointed 26-10 loss in Jacksonville part of a funky Week 1, or is this a sign of things to come? On paper, I projected Carolina to be improved. That was mainly due to my expectation that quarterback Bryce Young would take another step. Following a disastrous two-interception performance where he was just over 50% throwing the ball, I’m starting to rethink this one already.

Next up: At Cardinals

29. New Orleans Saints (0-1)

Truth be told, the Saints were more competitive in Week 1 than I would have expected. Granted, I’m pretty high on the Cardinals, but the Saints had the ball with a chance to tie the game in the final minutes. Quarterback Spencer Rattler was solid, and the defense kept Murray under 200 yards passing. Bad teams can start strong(ish), so we’ll see what the next few weeks hold.

Next up: Vs 49ers

30. Miami Dolphins (0-1)

There was no worse performance in Week 1 than the Dolphins. Head coach Mike McDaniel went into the year with the highest odds of being the first head coach to be fired, and his team did him no favors on Sunday. Tua looked lost, the defense looked toothless, and as a whole, they showed no life. The battle of the cellar commences in Miami in Week 2.

Next up: vs Patriots

31. New York Giants (0-1)

Is the Russell Wilson era already coming to an end? Head coach Brian Daboll wouldn’t commit to the veteran after posting a 25.6 QBR and averaging just 4.5 yards per passing attempt. Heading into the year, I had the Giants as one of three primary contenders for the top pick in the 2026 draft, and their lackluster 21-6 loss did nothing to dissuade me from that opinion.

Next up: At Cowboys

32. Cleveland Browns (0-1)

Good teams find ways to win, while bad teams find ways to lose. The latter part of that statement fit the Browns like a glove on Sunday, after they had every opportunity to walk away with one of Week 1’s biggest upsets. Kicker Andre Szmyt missed a potential game-winning 36-yard field goal, on top of an extra point. Their next offensive drive, Cedric Tillman dropped a catchable pass, which turned into an interception, effectively ending the game. On the plus side, the defense is still legit.

NFL “STEP Differential” Week 1

gettyimages-2233665645.jpg

Last year, I started tracking a stat every week that was inspired by Brian Billick’s “Toxic Differential” statistic that combined explosive play and turnover differential into a single number. My version added sacks to the mix and doubled the value of turnovers. I called the statistic “Toxic Differential Plus” as an homage to Billick’s original idea.

In an effort to make the name a little more intuitive, I’m rebranding Toxic Differential Plus to STEP Differential. STEP stands for Sack + Turnover(x2) + Explosive Play Differential. As I have said many times, there are no perfect statistics, so please don’t mistake this for trying to be that. However, I think it provides an incredibly interesting view into overall team health and tells an interesting story as we navigate another NFL season.

I’m using Infogram again this year:

NFL Toxic Differential Plus
Infogram

I have kept the previous end of year data going back to 2020 on the slides. I have a spreadsheet that goes back much further and at some point, I’ll write up a long analysis. For right now, I think it’s most interesting to think of this as an interesting data point to keep in mind as we try to sort out contenders and pretenders.

Bears vs. Lions Injury Report: Jaylon Johnson A Full Participant

gettyimages-2191957696.jpg

As the Chicago Bears prepare for the second game of the season against the Detroit Lions, both teams have released their first official injury report for week 1.

The Bears were extremely banged up for a season opener last week, notably missing both starting cornerbacks (Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon), as well as starting linebacker TJ Edwards. So how do things stand heading into this Sunday?

The Bears had a walk through practice on Wednesday, so the injury report is an estimation. Listed as DNP (did not practice) were: DB Kyler Gordon (hamstring) and DL Grady Jarrett (knee).

Listed as limited in practice were: LB TJ Edwards (hamstring), DB Josh Blackwell (groin), RB Roschon Johnson (foot), and WR Jahdae Walker (ankle).

And the biggest news of the day, both WR DJ Moore (abdomen/groin) and DB Jaylon Johnson (calf/groin) practiced in full according to the estimated injury report.

— Bears Communications (@BearsPR) September 10, 2025

Johnson’s absence throughout training camp, as well as being inactive last week vs. the Vikings, was a cause for major concern. It’s very encouraging to see that he practiced on Wednesday as the Bears are going to need him to play on Sunday in a tough matchup with the Lions. The same goes for Moore, who took a nasty hit near the end of Monday night’s game.

LB TJ Edwards was also a scratch from Monday night’s game, so we’ll be monitoring his status as we get closer to Sunday. His status as “limited,” in addition to Roschon Johnson having the same status, means both are making progress on their injuries.

In an idea world, Gordon would also be ready to go this weekend, so his status will be worth monitoring as the week goes on. He was a surprising name who seemingly popped up on the injury report last weekend out of nowhere and then was inactive vs. the Vikings.

Grady Jarrett’s name seemingly popped up out of nowhere. A major edition to the Bears’ revamped defensive line, a knee injury that was estimated to keep him out of practice today is noteworthy.

The Detroit Lions had some notable names listed on their first injury report for week two. Listed as DNP were: LB Jack Campbell (ankle) and OT Taylor Decker (shoulder). Listed as limited were: LB Trevor Nowaske (elbow) and RB Sione Vaki (hamstring). Both CB Terrion Arnold (groin) and S Daniel Thomas (hand) were full participants.

The Bears take on the Lions this Sunday at Ford Field. The game takes place at 12:00 p.m. (Chicago time).

Commanders vs Packers Thursday Night Football Open Thread

gettyimages-2234181817.jpg

The Washington Commanders are taking on the Green Bay Packers on Thursday Night Football, and you can talk about it right here in our open thread. As always, our open threads are rated WCG-MA, and considering the Packers are playing tonight, I’d expect this to be even more “MA” than usual.

Both teams are coming off week one wins, with the Commanders knocking off the New York Football Giants 21 to 6, and the Packers taking out the Detroit Lions 27 to 13.

These are two playoff teams from a season ago, and each franchise expects to be back in the postseason mix again.

Who do you think has the edge?

Will the Packers make it two in a row at home and keep their good vibes going after the Micah Parsons trade, or will Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels send a message to the NFC that there will be no sophomore slump from him?

Bears vs Lions Injury Report: Kyler Gordon out, Grady Jarrett questionable

imagn-26363861.jpg

The Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions meet on Sunday in a game between two winless teams, and each team has issued its final injury report.

Considering how the Bears started the week, their list has to be regarded as good news. The following players all practice in full today and carry no injury designation: Cornerbacks Josh Blackwell and Jaylon Johnson, linebacker T.J. Edwards, running back Roschon Johnson, and wideout DJ Moore.

Getting those three defenders back should bolster a defense that will be without nickelback Kyler Gordon, who is out again with that hamstring issue. The Bears also list defensive tackle Grady Jarrett as questionable with a knee injury, and he was limited at today’s practice.

Rookie receiver Jahdae Walker (ankle) was held out today and is listed as doubtful.

Also, in case you missed it, earlier today, the Bears signed kicker Jake Moody to the practice squad.

The Lions have a relatively small injury report as well, but they will be without reserve linebacker Trevor Nowaske (ebow). Backup running back Sione Vaki (hamstring) is doubtful, but he was limited all week at practice.

Detroit lists two as questionable, starting left tackle Taylor Decker (shoulder) and starting safety Kerby Joseph (knee), but while Joseph wa slimited today, Decker missed the entire week of practice. Lions head coach Dan Campbell said that 10-year veteran Decker could go in the game without practice if he’s feeling good on Sunday, but that they’ll also think of his long-term health when making a decision.

Bears vs Lions: Complete Storystream Coverage for Week 2

gettyimages-2188049075.jpg

The Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions meet on Sunday, and with each team coming off a disappointing NFC North loss, the importance of this one is magnified. The loser of this one will find themselves in a 0-2 divisional hole, and while the 2025 season is still in its infancy, no team wants to climb out of that.

There’s also the Ben Johnson factor, which will have emotions high in both locker rooms and especially among the Motown faithful at Ford Field. Lions fans, for the most part, have spewed vitriol towards the Bears’ new coach for abandoning their franchise for a division rival, so they’ll be in full throat all afternoon.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell is already calling his shot, saying, “We’re going to win this game. We have to.”

Ben Johnson knows how raucous the crowd will be.

“Maybe (a silent cadence) will help this week,” Johnson said. “We’re going to need to do that, and we’re going to need to be really good at that because this is going to be a loud environment that we’re going to. This is going to be a playoff-like atmosphere. Ford Field has been something else over the last couple of years, so we’re going to have to be at our best.”

WCG Predicts Chicago Bears vs Detroit Lions

gettyimages-2196275629.jpg

Below you will find our WCG contributors’ roundtable predictions for the Chicago Bears vs. the Detroit Lions this Sunday at 12:00pm CST.

Gooch: Game score 28-21, Bears. 340 yards passing for Caleb – 2 passing TDs, one to Rome. Montez Sweat posts 1.5 sacks. Goff: an interception (to JJ), fumble, two passing TDS. Gibbs rushes for over 100 yards. Monty notches their other TD. Bears go 60 minutes without a false start.

Lester: Bears lose a close one, 24 to 22, but Caleb plays a more consistent game from start to finish. D’Andre Swift also looks better, as the Bears look to slow the game down while emphasizing the run. Kyle Monangai gets in on the action, and Colston Loveland gets a touchdown.

Bryan: 27-24 Lions. Goff throws 2 TDs (ARSB & Gibbs) and Monty punches another one in. Goff also throws a pick on a batted ball to Brisker and loses a fumble on a sack from Dexter. Caleb throws 2 TDs himself, 1 to Kmet and another to Zaccheus. RoJo punches one in for the Beloved, but Jake Bates goes 2-2 while Santos’ struggles continue, and he only makes 1-2 FGs.

ECD: Bears 27 Lions 23 – This will be another tight game as Ben Johnson tweaks the ground game and the defense returns to (almost) full health to keep the Lions offense in check.

Ryan: Lions take this one, 31-24. Caleb plays steady for the full game and hits some deep shots, finishing with close to 300 yards passing and 2 TDs. Unfortunately, the Lions get their mojo back on offense this week and Goff looks like last year’s Goff.

Get your prediction on record right now for Sunday’s game!
