The sources did not say what length of suspension either side would accept, only that the two camps "aren't anywhere close," according to one.

Rodriguez's representatives repeatedly have said he will fight any suspension.

Sources said the Yankees have not been part of conversations, and that MLB apparently has taken the position that Rodriguez's discipline has nothing to do with his contract with the club.

Meanwhile, the Yankees announced Thursday that Rodriguez will join the Double-A Trenton Thunder on Friday to play in a rehabilitation assignment game. If he is not suspended and prevented from playing pending an appeal, A-Rod could rejoin the Yankees as early as Sunday in San Diego or in Chicago on Monday.

Whatever punishment MLB issues should be announced by Sunday, however. If Rodriguez does not agree to a suspension, any MLB discipline likely would include a ban from playing while he appeals, a move Rodriguez and the players' association are expected to fight.

Normally, I probably wouldn't make a topic for a news article like this since it really isn't news, but I think the talk about a lifetime ban is interesting. I doubt it is anything more than speculation, but what are your thoughts on this? Basically, a lot of fans are hoping that Alex Rodriguez gets banned for life. Personally, I would be all for this, but with the way suspensions have been done, I don't think the MLB could get away with a lifetime ban even if they pushed for it. Also, if Alex Rodriguez gets banned, the Yankees will then be able to back out of the huge contract that I am sure they regret agreeing to. A lot of us don't want to see this happen because then the Yankees will be right back to shopping the free agency market in the next couple seasons. Thoughts?
 
I'd like to see a long suspension. One that he won't be able to bounce back from, while not allowing the Yankees to back out of his contract. It's cruel, but I really don't want to see A-Rod playing anymore.
 
Won't be suspended for life. No way MLB makes that happen. Rest of this year, and all of next year is the most he will get.
 
He has been suspended for the rest of the 2013 and 2014 season. He appealed his suspension though which is why he has been playing this past week.

I'd prefer it if he wasn't allowed to play this year. That doesn't sit right with me.
 
That's the beauty of appealing it. He is delaying it, so he can play as much as possible until he disappears again. :)

I have seen all the controversy surrounding A-Rod on all the sports shows and they seem to be making a big deal out of this. Why is this more news over the actual game? Stuff like this seems to take away from the game of baseball and I don't think that's right in my opinion. I was to watch baseball, not what's going on outside of baseball. Let them duke it out while I'm watching baseball.

I agree, but Pete Rose doesn't have a lot of years left. Also, considering he told the truth nine years ago, if the MLB was going to unban him for admitting to it, they should have done it already. Unfortunately, I do not think he will be unbanned any time soon. They'll let him die, and then they'll move on. Take a look at Shoeless Joe Jackson, for example.

Even worse would be a post-mortem Hall of Fame induction. I would lose all respect for the MLB if that happened.
 
I think that's better than nothing. 100 years from now, I think people are going to look back at Pete Rose as one of the best players ever, even if he isn't in the Hall of Fame. Notice how the Black Sox Scandal was 95 years ago, and Shoeless Joe Jackson's legacy has lived on.
