Well, it turns out this was a highly-anticipated injury report for both teams.

Ahead of their showdown with the Boston Celtics on NBC Sunday, the Sixers have officially ruled out Joel Embiid for their next three games with a right oblique strain.

This happened to Embiid earlier in the week against the Miami Heat, when he got Kel’el Ware to bite on a pump fake, causing him to jump and hit Embiid in the ribs with his knee inadvertently. He didn’t really miss much of that game due to it, but he was favoring his midsection the entire rest of the contest.

After a quick 4-of-7 start the game, Embiid was clearly hampered by this. He shot 4-of-13 the rest of the night with two ugly turnovers. Here’s a clip of the play where it happened.

Embiid was not a participant at the Sixers’ most recent practice. A team spokesperson told reporters that he had been feeling an increase of soreness in the area since that Heat game and still had some consulting with the team’s medical staff to do.

Joel Embiid did not participate in practice today. He’s reporting increased soreness in his right side. Meeting with medical staff and his status will be updated with the injury report later today.

— Paul Hudrick (@PaulHudrick) February 28, 2026

Upon the release of the official report, the team announced that Embiid underwent an MRI that revealed the strain, ruling him out for the two games following Boston as well.

An MRI today revealed that Joel Embiid suffered a strained right oblique, per Sixers.

Embiid will miss the team’s next three games and be reevaluated following the upcoming back-to-back.

— Paul Hudrick (@PaulHudrick) February 28, 2026

This once again puts the Sixers in a precarious spot as they desperately try to cling on to the sixth seed in the East. They went 1-4 in their most recent five-game stretch without Embiid, three of those losses being decisive blowouts at that. It’s also a bummer because we will again be robbed of the rematch between Embiid and Victor Wembanyama when the Spurs come to Philly early next week.

So the Sixers will be shorthanded, but at least they won’t be the first team to take on the Boston Celtics at full strength this season. Despite the rumblings and weird advertisements tied in with NBC, Jayson Tatum will not be making his season debut Sunday night.

Tatum of course hasn’t played since last May, when he tore his Achilles tendon in his right leg during Game 4 of the second round of the playoffs against the New York Knicks. It’s truly remarkable that he’s so close to returning this was even considered a possibility by some. At least the Sixers caught this break, and they won’t see Tatum unless these teams see each other in the playoffs.

Embiid-less Sixers face final regular season meeting with Celtics

The Philadelphia 76ers are headed to TD Garden to take on the Boston Celtics for the fourth and final time this regular season.

Joel Embiid will not be shipping up to Boston, however, after an MRI on Saturday confirmed that Embiid suffered a strained right oblique in the team’s win over the Miami Heat on Thursday night. He will miss the Sixers’ next three games (including Sunday’s) before being re-evaluated. Other than Embiid, Philadelphia will also continue to be without Paul George on Sunday as he sits out his suspension.

After facing off three times in the first three weeks of the season, the Sixers and Celtics haven’t met since way back in November. Philadelphia actually leads the series against Boston so far with two wins and one loss, but all three games were extremely close — the largest margin being two points, the other games decided by a single point.

For this fourth and final meeting the Celtics will, despite rumors and rumblings as of late, still be without Jayson Tatum, who has not played this season after tearing his Achilles tendon in his right leg in the playoffs last season.

Baylor Scheierman also is questionable for Boston for Sunday due to a thumb fracture. Scheierman isn’t a name you might not recognize, but the sophomore guard has actually become a bigger piece of the Celtics rotation as of late. He played 24.3 minutes per game in February and started in the Celtics’ last six contests, averaging 8.7 points and 5.0 rebounds while playing some good defense in that span.

Even without Tatum this season, Boston has been looking pretty damn good, especially since the turn of the calendar year. The Celtics have won 10 of their last 12 games and are currently second in the Eastern Conference at 39-20, trailing only the 44-14 Detroit Pistons.

Jaylen Brown has been far and away the Celtics leader all season, averaging a career-high 29.1 points per game in 53 contests, but he has a supporting cast playing good basketball right now as well. Payton Pritchard and Derrick White are chipping in career-highs of 17.3 points and 17.1 points per game, respectively.

There’s also Nikola Vucevic, who was moved to Boston from the Chicago Bulls at the trade deadline. He has played just eight games with the Celtics but came alive for a big double-double in their most recent contest, putting up 28 points on 9-for-13 field goal shooting and 3-for-3 from long range with 11 rebounds. Sure, it was in a blowout win over the Brooklyn Nets, but still something to watch as Vucevic continues to acclimate to the Celtics squad.

The Sixers have been on a positive streak recently as well — a short one, but positive nonetheless — winning their last three games in a row and putting momentum back in their favor after losing four straight prior. The most recent two of those victories came with the help of Embiid, while the first (against Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves) was without him. Philadelphia has been shooting the ball well (or at least better than their usual) in that three-game stint as well, hitting 51.7% from the floor and 42.3% from long range.

It’s a good thing that the Sixers have been hotter from beyond the arc, too, because they’re likely going to need those threes to keep up with Boston. As of Saturday evening, the Celtics are second in the NBA in offensive rating at 120.2. For reference, the Sixers are more of a middle-of-the-pack team at 15th (115.0) in the category.

This is going to be a tough one for the Sixers sans Embiid to kick off a busy March, with 16 games in the month. It is certainly possible, with Philadelphia having done it before without their star center back in that two-point victory way back in November, but that’s ancient history now. Based on how the Celtics have been playing recently, it’s likely going to be one of those games the Sixers need everyone at their absolute best: they’ll need Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe to both score and facilitate well, Kelly Oubre Jr. to keep shooting as well as he has the past couple weeks, Quentin Grimes to chip in off the bench, everyone doing their jobs defensively, and someone… anyone… to be aggressive rebounding.

It’s going to take everyone.

The Sixers and Celtics tip off from TD Garden at 8 p.m. ET.

Sixers Bell Ringer: 56 points from Maxey-Edgecombe duo not enough to beat Celtics

The Philadelphia 76ers fell 114-98 to the Boston Celtics at TD Garden on Sunday night. It was the fourth and final meeting between the teams this regular season — they split the series 2-2.

Joel Embiid was out for this contest (as he will be for the Sixers’ next two as well) after being diagnosed with a right oblique strain. Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe tried to pick up the slack, scoring 33 and 23 points respectively, but it simply wasn’t enough to keep up with the Celtics.

This was one of those quintessentially annoying Sixers’ losses. They made more of a game out of it than maybe was expected going into this contest and they did some things great against a really tough opponent… but at the same time, they were so horrendous in other areas, like poor rebounding and making Neemias Queta look like prime Dwight Howard all evening. Always a mixed bag with this Philadelphia squad.

Next up on the schedule for the Sixers is a back-to-back starting on Tuesday night hosting the San Antonio Spurs and then hosting the Utah Jazz on Wednesday. The team has already announced that Embiid will be out for both contests before being re-evaluated.

Until then, let’s get to the Bell Ringer.

VJ Edgecombe: 23 points (5 three-pointers), 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, 1 block

gettyimages-2263779882.jpg

VJ Edgecombe was the only one keeping the Sixers alive as the Celtics started to pull away in the later half of the second period. Especially with Maxey icy cold at the time, Edgecombe was the only reason the Sixers still had a chance in this one as we entered the second half, where he kept delivering. The rookie was just consistently good tonight, from efficient shooting and smart playmaking to some aggression on the boards with a side of some good defense.

The Sixers asked a lot of Edgecombe tonight with some of the lineups they had him out there with, and just frankly how much they needed him throughout overall, and he delivered. Tonight was another example of the rookie playing beyond his years and seemingly thriving even more when the pressure is on.

Edgecombe ended this one with 23 points (including five triples) with five rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block.

Oh, and stay to the end of this video for what might be the best effort play of the season from him.

Absolutely have to shout out VJ Edgecombe for his performance tonight. Shooting wasn't always perfect but he kept the Sixers in that one at times. A lot was asked of him and he delivered.

What a rookie.

Tyrese Maxey: 33 points, 3 rebounds, 6 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks

gettyimages-2263786481.jpg

It was a tale of two halves for Tyrese Maxey tonight. The first half was one Maxey will quickly want to forget.

Fortunately, he seemed to do just that. After an inefficient first half from Maxey, the third period brought a much more familiar version of the All-Star guard, with Maxey putting up 13 points in the penultimate frame (and tacking on seven more in the fourth) after putting up 13 in the entire first half.

Obviously it would be great to never have a bad start or a bad half, but it’s great to see how Maxey can recover even after a cold streak of shooting. After going just 4-for-18 from the floor in the first 24 minutes, Maxey turned things around a bit to shoot 8-for-16 in the second half. He not only started making more shots but just seemed to be a lot smarter about which shots he was taking as the game progressed. Even if the game situation felt like it demanded more urgency than the first half, he seemed to settle in and not worry about forcing things that simply weren’t there. The opportunities that were there — whether it be to launch from long range, drive straight through the Celtics defense, or to dime up a teammate — he took advantage of.

Maxey finished Sunday night with a game-high 33 points with three rebounds, six assists, one steal and two blocks.

Dominick Barlow: 14 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist, 3 steals

gettyimages-2263797961.jpg

Dominick Barlow might not have contributed the amount that Maxey or Edgecombe did, but he chipped in here and there with some good stints when it was needed.

His biggest offensive contribution came from seven points in the third period that he absolutely battled for, whether it meant coming up with a defensive play and taking it coast-to-coast or drawing contact on the offensive end to get to the line.

Barlow was the Sixers’ third-highest scorer tonight with 14 points on 4-for-7 field goal shooting and 6-for-8 from the charity stripe. Especially on a night where the bench is almost completely unproductive offensively, it’s huge to have that sort of contribution from Barlow. Not only that, but Barlow was one of the few Sixers fighting for rebounds, and he even put up some solid defense on some of the best players the Celtics squad has to offer, including Jaylen Brown.

He finished the game with 14 points, eight rebounds (two offensive), one assist and three steals.

And yet, he didn’t play a single second in the fourth period. Don’t ask me why.

The Sixers won three straight. The third win was a pretty crucial one, staving off the Miami Heat’s push for the sixth seed and evening the season series, putting the all-important tie-breaker still in play with the season series tied 1-1.

Unfortunately, Joel Embiid suffered a flukey oblique injury and the Sixers proceeded to lose to the Boston Celtics on the road Sunday night. They now welcome Victor Wembanyama and the red-shot San Antonio Spurs to Xfinity Mobile Arena Tuesday.

It’s almost impressive the way this team can kill good vibes.

I have my thoughts on what went wrong in Boston, though the reality is the Celtics are just the better team — especially with Embiid and Paul George not in the lineup. What do you think the team’s biggest issues are when Embiid is out? Hit me with your questions and comments below.

Sixers make a game of it, but Boston’s edge on the glass too much to overcome

Credit to the rook for even keeping them in this game.

The Sixers’ three-game win streak was snapped with a 114-98 loss to the Boston Celtics Sunday night. They are now 33-27, still one game up in the loss column for the East’s sixth seed thanks to a loss earlier in the day from the Orlando Magic.

Tyrese Maxey, who got going as the second half progressed, led all scorers with 33 shooting 12-of-34 from the floor along with six assists. VJ Edgecombe, with a stellar 5-of-11 night from deep, dropped 23 points along with five rebounds.

Jaylen Brown and Neemias Queta led the Celtics with 27 apiece.

Joel Embiid missed his first of at least three games with an oblique strain.

Here are some thoughts at the buzzer.

First Quarter

  • It was quite a flashy start, with Maxey and Edgecombe each nailing their first pull-up threes of the game. Maxey shook his defender with a good crossover on two possessions in a row — he nailed the midrange J but missed that three-point attempt.
  • Offensive rebounding was a problem from the jump, with Boston grabbing four within the first five minutes of the game. There were plenty of Celtics bricks to grab early, and the Sixers’ quick pace covered that up for the time being.

— Liberty Ballers (@Liberty_Ballers) March 2, 2026
  • Adem Bona gave the Sixers a shot in the arm down low, but similar to Andre Drummond his contributions were more on the offensive end. He was the only Sixer to score for a four-minute stretch as they conceded a 10-1 run. Dominick Barlow nailed and a catch-and-shoot jumper to end that, but he was inside the arc so the Sixers held just a two-point lead after one.

Second Quarter

  • For the non-Maxey minutes, Nick Nurse went with all the bench ball-handlers alongside Edgecombe. Quentin Grimes missed his first two pull-ups while Trendon Watford made his first pair of push shots that kept the offense afloat. Cam Payne just picked up one assist in his first four minutes of action.
Trendon Watford gets on the board to start off the second quarter for the Sixers pic.twitter.com/nuSKp1vEZ3

— Liberty Ballers (@Liberty_Ballers) March 2, 2026
  • Drummond made his first three of the night, but he really struggled on the other end, chasing around Queta who was suddenly flirting with a 20-point half. This game again exposed how thin they are at center when Embiid is out of the lineup, with Bona picking up his third foul to boot.
  • The Sixers went nearly four minutes without a field goal after that Drummond three. Maxey already began to teeter before he left the game and then missed several tough shots when he checked back in. He finally got a tough and-1 floater towards the end of the half. Drummond knocked down another three, but got T’d up for his celebration. Another overaggressive double team led to Brown kicking out to an open three at the buzzer, one that put the Celtics up by 12.

Third Quarter

  • Two quick threes to start the second half gave Boston their largest lead of the night. A four-point play from Edgecombe was a good response, and Maxey followed with a trip to the line, but both followed with missed shots in the paint, ending their brief momentum.
4-point play for VJ Edgecombe! pic.twitter.com/BiuBpGjN69

— Liberty Ballers (@Liberty_Ballers) March 2, 2026
  • Edgecombe has been shooting really well on pull-ups in the midrange as of late but it was behind the arc in this one. To say it was all they had was an understatement — through three quarters, only three of his teammates had also made a three-pointer.
  • His only help for much of the quatrer was Barlow. His three steals helped the 14 points he had, but he was aggressive enough to get to the line eight times as well. Maxey finally got some baskets to go with fast break layups and runners. He threw a really nice skip pass on one break to Grimes, and hit a tough stepback three to get the Sixers within six points.

Fourth Quarter

  • Both starters in the backcourt stayed out there to start the quarter and each knocked down another three, but their flurries showed just what it took to keep the lead where it was, much less eat into it. The aggressive double teams didn’t stop against the Celtics, the most three-point hunting team in the league, and the Sixers paid for it again and again.
VJ Edgecombe gets up for the dunk — he's got 22 points and counting tonight. pic.twitter.com/HqSiiTL67Q

— Liberty Ballers (@Liberty_Ballers) March 2, 2026
  • They were in no position to risk it, but the Sixers picked up an extremely weak flagrant midway through the fourth. Queta hit Edgecombe hard with a screen but drew no foul, so Kelly Oubre Jr. gave Queta a hard push in retaliation. In ref wars though the Sixers at least got one back a few possessions later. After trying all game Edgecombe finally drew an offensive foul on a Brown push off. No one got the worst of it though than the fan Edgecombe inadvertently kicked leaping into the crowd to save a loose ball.
  • Nikola Vucevic killed Bona earlier in the quarter stepping out, and Queta continued to kill Drummond with the starters in down the stretch. On top of his 10 offensive rebounds, he continued to beat the Sixers defense and force them to put him on the line. Finally in the last minutes of this game the Celtics put the game away in a way it felt like they should have way earlier in the half.

Rockets Pick Tracker: Solid week keeps Houston in place

With Houston playing good ball out of the All-Star break this a reminder that yes, you are still allowed to be mad at the Jared McCain trade.

The Rockets seem to have gotten their act together since this blog started tracking their progress and the 2026 first-round pick they owe to the Sixers. They went 3-1 over their last week of action, dropping only a matinee game in Miami to the Heat.

That’s kept their pick at 25th overall, just where it was a week ago. Houston’s schedule remains fairly easy, at least in the short term. They’ll host a banged up Golden State Warriors team this week as well as the Portland Trail Blazers before heading to San Antonio to take on the Spurs.

Anyone rooting for losses can at least take solace in the fact that those two home games are a back-to-back, and that Spurs matchup projects to be quite a battle.

Last week the tracker briefly touched on some of the draft prospects that have been mocked in that range, and this week’s will serve as somewhat as a channel guide to watch some of these guys with the college regular season winding down.

Amari Allen from Alabama remains Tankathon’s mock pick for the Sixers here. The Crimson Tide’s last two regular season games are March 3 against Georgia at 6:30 p.m. ET on ESPNNEWS and Auburn at 8:30 on March 7 on ESPN.

Joshua Jefferson and Iowa State have only one remaining regular season game, that will also be March 7 at 2 p.m. ET against Arizona State.

It doesn’t feel likely that Michigan’s Yaxel Lendeborg would fall to them in this range, but their center Aday Mara has been mocked closer to where the Sixers might be picking. The Wolverines last two games are on March 5 at 8 p.m. ET against Iowa and on March 7 at 4:30 p.m. ET. You can catch that one on CBS.

Pick status this week: 25

The 76ers were on the wrong end of an old-fashioned butt-whooping from the Spurs on Tuesday falling 131- 91.

The throwback broadcast was spoiled for Philly fans after one quarter, as the Spurs’ talent advantage presented itself rapidly against the undermanned Sixers.

They were without Joel Embiid (right oblique strain) and Kelly Oubre Jr. (illness) on Tuesday night, leaving Andre Drummond as the starting matchup with Victor Wembanyama, which went as well as you would expect.

A competitive first quarter from the Sixers saw strong stretches from VJ Edgecombe, Adem Bona and Justin Edwards, but it quickly faded in the second quarter as the home squad got outscored 46- 28.

Within a blink of an eye in the third, the Spurs had opened up a 40-point lead off the back of strong shooting from deep and nonexistent defensive effort from the Sixers.

Tyrese Maxey put up a quiet 21 points on 19 attempts, did not hit a three after the first quarter, and finished with two assists. Credit goes to a strong defensive backcourt in San Antonio.

Edgecombe had a strong showing before he left the game early with lower back soreness after taking a hard fall on this play:

Thus, our Bell Ringers will be picked from our garbage time opportunist and a familiar face.

Jabari Walker: 20 points, 7-of-10 FG, 2-of-5 3PT, 4-of-4 FT, 6 rebounds, 2 offensive rebounds

Walker was the sole garbage-time performer deserving of recognition. He got his first minutes in the third while the Sixers were down 39, and drew a foul after grabbing an offensive rebound, and hit both free throws. Later in the frame he would drain a corner three.

In the fourth, Walker would add a couple of close shots, a dunk and another corner three to push him to 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting. He notched two and-1 buckets in a row later in the quarter, bringing his total to 20 points on the night.

It was a welcome sight for Walker, who has seen his minutes shrink in recent games. He broke a dry spell in the scoring column, entering Tuesday having not made a shot in almost two weeks. Perhaps this showing will turn the tide for him offensively as the Sixers could desperately use any help on that end.

Jared McCain: 20 points, 8-of-15 FG, 4-of-9 3PT, 3 assists, 2 steals, 1 rebound

Our long lost friend Jared McCain put up an undeniable stat-line against the Bulls in 25 minutes of action, helping the Thunder win without Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Tonight was the kind of night Sixers fans dreaded after the questionable trade deadline. A poor performance at home where McCain’s services would have been a useful asset or at the very least entertaining for fans in the stadium, as opposed to them exiting early with most of the second half still to go.

Yes, we need to discuss the Jared McCain trade again

gettyimages-2179516548.jpg

WILMINGTON, DE - OCTOBER 20: Jared McCain #20 of the Philadelphia 76ers talks to Daryl Morey during an open practice on October 20, 2024 at Chase Fieldhouse in Wilmington, Delaware. The vibes for the Philadelphia 76ers are at a low point for the season. The team has lost six of their last nine games, Paul George is about halfway through a league drug policy-related suspension, and Joel Embiid is currently missing time with an oblique injury. Losses to Boston and San Antonio this week looked like blowouts going in and played out accordingly. Philadelphia is less than one full game clear in the standings of the Play-In tournament.

At least the team’s 2024 first-round pick is flourishing, rounding into form after dealing with a couple of injuries coming into the season. Jared McCain has three 20-point games across his last seven appearances, shooting 48.5 percent from the field and 43.1 percent from three since Feb. 6. Of course, that was the date the Sixers traded McCain to Oklahoma City for Houston’s 2026 first-round pick and a few second-rounders. And as much as some people want those covering the team to stop bringing him up and focus on those players still here in Philadelphia, the McCain trade is hanging over everything going wrong with the Sixers right now.

First, the Sixers lost a rotation player and didn’t add one of even a similar caliber. So their ‘glut of guards’ right now is really just Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe getting run into the ground, plus Quentin Grimes. We saw when Grimes missed time recently with an illness, and might again with Edgecombe being ruled out after the fall he took Tuesday night, that everything completely crumbles if any of those guys are unavailable.

McCain leaving has also shined a light on coaching issues with Nick Nurse at the helm. McCain wasn’t given much runway this season in Philadelphia, and we all assumed it was mostly due to struggles coming back from the injuries. Except now, Jared immediately slotted into the rotation for the defending champions, a team with much more guard and wing depth than the Sixers by the way, and is being used in a bunch of creative actions by head coach Mark Daigneault to great effect. Why weren’t sets incorporated in Philly that played to McCain’s strengths, particularly for a team searching for scoring punch off the bench? With how dramatic the shift in his production has ramped up, the “Sixers really screwed the pooch with the McCain trade” narrative has exploded from a local push to a national media blitz with recent articles from Kevin O’Connor, Jake Fischer and Tom Ziller.

Finally, the chemistry for the team has just been completely off since the trade deadline, something that was actually really good during the first half of the season. It’s something that even during his more-lauded days, Daryl Morey would be criticized for: overlooking the human element. Even supposing his calculation of Jared McCain’s trade value was correct (and it’s looking like it very, very much was not), what message does shipping him out and not doing anything else to backfill that rotation spot at the deadline send to the rest of the team? You have your major building block for the future, Tyrese Maxey, talking about how difficult the trade deadline was, and then how he misses Jared.

Tyrese Maxey was asked about the energy and morale of the Sixers since their five-game road trip out west. They’ve lost 6 of 9.

Tyrese says the trade deadline was difficult, but they moved on. Also, he said if they dwell on it, that will get them nowhere. @KYWNewsradio pic.twitter.com/Y4Rjw8shrN

— Dave Uram (@MrUram) March 4, 2026
Tyrese Maxey: “I ain’t going to lie and say I don’t miss Jared [McCain]. But I’m happy for him. I’m happy for him. I watch him in OKC and hope he does well every single night, except for when he plays us.”

— Adam Aaronson (@SixersAdam) March 4, 2026

Maxey is being diplomatic, but it’s not hard to connect the dots that he’s bothered by how management kind of gave up on this season last month. And I think we all know how Joel Embiid feels about things after he publicly implored the front office not to duck the tax prior to the deadline. O’Connor reported that the Sixers made some calls around Kawhi Leonard, but you can’t fracture a team’s chemistry to the degree trading McCain did on a pipe dream. You need to have Plans B, C, and D in place.

So the Jared McCain trade hurt the Sixers’ chances this season and hurt the organization’s standing in the minds of their star players. Early returns look like the ‘sell high’ was anything but, and signs are pointing to a potential coaching change being needed. McCain once looked to be part of the bridge to the next era of Sixers basketball, but now, his departure looks like the death knell of the previous era.

Sixers Bell Ringer: Led by Jabari Walker, the Sixers manage to barely beat tanking Jazz

Dominick Barlow – 2
Andre Drummond – 2
MarJon Beauchamp – 1
Adem Bona – 1
Justin Edwards – 1
Quentin Grimes – 1
Trendon Watford – 1
15th roster spot – 1

This will technically count as an NBA game in which the Philadelphia 76ers defeated the Utah Jazz 106-102.

The Sixers were very shorthanded. VJ Edgecombe was ruled out for a back contusion after exiting last night’s game just before halftime after falling hard. In addition to the rookie, Joel Embiid (oblique), Paul George (suspension) and Kelly Oubre Jr. (illness) were all also unavailable.

So, Tyrese Maxey and the hospital Sixers against a tanking Jazz squad… unstoppable force versus immovable object? Complete lack of force versus very movable object?

The Sixers led by five at halftime led by a burst of scoring by Jabari Walker with 15 points on perfect 5-for-5 field goal and 4-for-4 long range shooting. Maxey was the other main contributor with 14 points at the break on slightly less efficient shooting. And then, as it always does, the third frame came along. The Sixers let the Jazz — who are basically actively trying to lose basketball games — go on a 10-0 run to start the second half, taking their first lead of the game.

It wasn’t a pretty fourth quarter for either team as the Sixers had to claw their way back from down six late. A win is a win, I suppose.

This game was the second leg of a back-to-back for the Sixers. Now, thankfully, they’ll get a couple of days to rest before their next contest visiting the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday night.

Until then, let’s get to the Bell Ringer.

Jabari Walker: 22 points (7-for-12 FG, 4-for-7 3PT), 10 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block

imagn-28401516.jpg

The San Antonio Spurs’ demolition of the Sixers on Tuesday night wasn’t good for much, but it might have helped Jabari Walker get into a groove. After putting up 20 points (yes, mostly in garbage time, but still) last night, Walker came into Wednesday’s game red hot — I’m talking perfect shooting through halftime level hot.

Walker came into the game off the bench in the second half of the first frame and immediately got to work, sinking back-to-back triples within a few minutes of taking the floor. He then settled right back into the corner of the arc, pump-faked his way into a drive to the basket and drew a trip to the line. He scored seven points in his first four minutes on the floor to close the first frame. But he wasn’t done — he contributed the Sixers’ first eight points in the second period on two triples and a layup. Fifteen straight Sixers’ points across the end of the first into the beginning of the second came from Walker. At halftime, he had 15 points on perfect 5-for-5 field goal and 4-for-4 three-point shooting.

Not only was Walker racking up some points, but he also was incredibly aggressive on the offensive boards (which led to a few of his points, actually) and played some physical, effective defensive as well.

Walker finished Wednesday with 22 points, 10 rebounds (three offensive), two assists and a block in 28 minutes off the bench.

Sure, it’s just garbage time versus the Spurs and a good performance against a tanking Jazz team, but it’s never a bad thing to get a player moving in a more productive direction… especially for a team that desperately needs more help from its bench like the Sixers do.

Tonight's video goes to Jabari Walker, who put up a 22-point, 10-rebound double-double off the bench for the Sixers. It was his second +20-point performance in just over 24 hours.

Tyrese Maxey: 25 points, 2 rebounds, 6 assists, 1 steal, 3 blocks

gettyimages-2264254190.jpg

There is a lot of discussion, mainly on social media, judging Tyrese Maxey on his ability to completely carry the Sixers team on his back.

I’m not sure what else he could have done in this one (other than just shoot with more efficiency, but more on that in a second). From the jump, the Jazz went with the defensive strategy of just sticking a double or even triple team on Maxey at all times. Not a bad idea, considering he was really the only shooting threat on paper from the Sixers’ lineup tonight. Even with all of that attention, though, Maxey managed to make it work. He started using his speed and footwork to maneuver through the defense before they could trap him, getting into the paint to find opportunities there and sometimes earning a trip to the line in the process.

His shooting… could have been better. He finished the night just 8-for-22 from the floor and 2-for-10 from long range. That being said, it’s sometimes harder to criticize Maxey when you know in part that the shot selection is him desperately trying to make something happen for the Sixers. You obviously want him to shoot better than 36.4%, but this felt like one of those nights you kind of have to take it with a grain of salt.

All that being said, Maxey finished the night with a team-leading 25 points with two rebounds, six assists, one steal and three blocks.

Quentin Grimes: 16 points (7-for-12 FG), 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal

gettyimages-2264254195.jpg

I won’t lie, this was far from the perfect game from Quentin Grimes. He had a few head-scratching-level questionable passes and couldn’t hit at all from long range. He had three turnovers. But, Grimes also stayed aggressive the entire game, and started driving hard into the paint to down under the rim where he was able to achieve a lot more success. Don’t believe me? Take a look at Grimes’ shot chart for this game.

grimes.jpg

In a game like this… whatever works, I guess!

Grimes had a number of really important points as well, such as four in the last 47 seconds of the game — a lay-up to tie the game at 102 apiece, and then two free throws on the following possession to take a two-point lead for Philadelphia. He finished the game with 16 points (on 7-for-12 field goal shooting), five rebounds (three offensive), two assists and one steal.

Adem Bona: 12 points (6-for-8 FG), 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block

gettyimages-2264254376.jpg

It wasn’t a perfect game from Adem Bona, either. To be frank, sometimes it just seems like he cannot grab on to the basketball without it bouncing off of his hands for the life of him. That being said, there aren’t many players that bring the amount of energy to the Sixers that Bona does. Whether it’s getting up for a big block, battling for every board or dunking the ball with all his might, Bona brings an undeniable boost to this Sixers lineup at times.

It was simply a solid night from the backup five (who actually started tonight instead of Andre Drummond in Joel Embiid’s absence). Bona finished the game with 12 points on 6-for-8 shooting from the floor with five rebounds (three offensive), an assist, a steal and a block.

If nothing else, at least enjoy watching this excellent put-back Bona slammed home on a missed Maxey three-point attempt.

Garbage time or not, Jabari Walker is always going to bring the hustle

The Sixers’ narrow win over the Utah Jazz Wednesday was thanks in large part to a 22-point effort from Jabari Walker. He came into the game hot, making his first four three-point attempts. That last one to fall wasn’t even a clean swish — he got a friendly bounce off the rim to get the corner three to fall.

“When I saw that one go in,” Walker said after the game, “it was rattling around the rim and I was like, ‘yeah, this is my day today.’”

Walker said he was in some type of zone when he first checked into the game. What’s incredible is how he was able to achieve that state despite a rough day off the court.

Earlier in the day Walker got a brand new car. After driving it for 30 minutes, Walker said he scratched it while backing up. He hasn’t been driving much since moving here and said he still has to get used to the tight spaces in Philadelphia (which, fair enough, Jabari).

Talking about it with someone before the game seems to have helped him go from one headspace to another.

“I talked to somebody coming in, I told him the story,” Walker explained. “They’re like ‘it’s gonna get better for you today.‘ And I was like, ‘alright, OK, I’m in my zone right now, I’m in basketball world.‘”

The basketball world has been kind to Walker, at least over the past two games. This was his second straight 20-point performance. Despite shooting just 29% on his 1.5 three-point attempts per game, the team has all the belief in his jump shot and has been encouraging him to get more up since the beginning of the season.

“I mean obviously, we’ve been trying to get him to play like that,” head coach Nick Nurse said. “You just have to get used to the NBA feel and having enough [space] to pull the trigger.”

Nurse described the ways they try to instill that confidence in Walker. Making a big deal out of his takes and makes in practices and shootarounds is his most tried and true method.

“Even in our workouts and walkthroughs, even when you think it doesn’t count, he’s on me to shoot it,” Walker said, “and those things are very motivating.”

Of course it was nice for both Walker and the Sixers for these contributions to come in a winning effort. The first of his 20-point performances came in a 40-point blowout loss to the San Antonio Spurs. Walker didn’t even check into that game until the third quarter when it was well in hand.

These two performances may very well vault Walker back into the rotation. On top of having to sit out some games while the Sixers had him in two-way/standard contract limbo, Walker’s been in a battle with Trendon Watford for those backup four minutes.

“He’s been fantastic, even last night when the game was so far out of reach, he came in with the right mindset,” said Quentin Grimes after the Jazz win. “If he keeps playing like that, it’s going to be big time for us.”

It would be easy for Walker to feel like he has earned the right to play more, but that is far from his mentality. He’s more concerned with playing his role correctly as opposed to keeping his spot when the team gets healthier.

“If my minutes have to go down, I’ll take it,” he said. “My job is to fill in and do exactly what I’m doing when they’re out. If I can help the team along with those guys, which I have before when everybody was healthy, then I’ll get those minutes.”

Not only has Walker been a quiet, reserved guy around the media, he’s much more frank about his role than the average NBA player. On the court and around his teammates, he’s just as energetic as his rebounding efforts would suggest.

“I’m actually kind of crazy … yeah, I talk a lot. Something’s really wrong with me,” Walker said as he smiled, “but I get a chance to let it out on the court and I’m just glad I’m able to contain it during times like this, but there’s something different about me that you see during those plays.”

Not only has Walker given the Sixers two straight 20-point performances off the bench, but he’s given their fans one of the most relatable quotes from an athlete of all time.

A win is a win?

Well, they may lose as bad as tanking teams, but at least they can still beat tanking teams.

The Sixers escaped with a 106-102 win over the Utah Jazz Wednesday night.

They are now 34-28, still a game up on the Orlando Magic for the sixth seed but tied in the loss column.

Despite some rough plays down the stretch, Tyrese Maxey led the Sixers with 25 points and six assists shooting 8-of-22 from the floor. Jabari Walker, hustling his ass off, put up 20 for the second straight night finishing with 22 points shooting 7-of-12 from the field along with 10 rebounds. Keyonte George led all scorers with 30.

The Sixers were without Joel Embiid (oblique strain), Paul George (suspension), VJ Edgecombe (lumbar contusion) and Kelly Oubre Jr. who missed his second straight game with an illness.

Here are some thoughts at the buzzer.

First Quarter

  • Maxey made his first shot of the game, knocking down a three off the catch, but that didn’t exactly set the tone for the Sixers’ offense. Plenty of isos resulted in just one and-1 for Dominick Barlow, a play he banged up his shoulder on. Trendon Watford threw up an ugly shot that missed the rim on top of a bad turnover trying to get a skip pass to the corner.
  • A sign of how ugly this one was Utah’s starting center Kyle Filipowski had to sit with three fouls less than six minutes into the game. While neither offense looked good, the Sixers’ bigs found ways to be productive. Both Watford and Barlow did a good job using their length to protect the rim, Watford picking up two blocks in the first. Barlow was also making good reads playing out of the high post against Utah’s zone.
  • Justin Edwards being one of the first subs to check in wasn’t surprising given the injury report, but Tyrese Martin being the other was. Martin missed his only shot attempt of the quarter and threw a bad cross-court pass that turned into a pick-6. Edwards though hit his first corner three and found Walker for another. The Sixers had turned things around to shoot 40% from the field and from three, but Cody Williams sinking a three of his own at the buzzer cut their lead to seven.

— Liberty Ballers (@Liberty_Ballers) March 5, 2026

Second Quarter

  • It was good to see Walker build off his 20-point performance in garbage time. It’s easy to notice when he has the hot hand from three, but the hustle plays he makes for this team are desperately needed at the moment. Plays like hanging on island and forcing a stop against the smaller Isaiah Collier, or drawing a foul trying to grab an offensive rebound.
  • Both offenses stalled again after the Walker heater. Quentin Grimes didn’t exactly snap into a rhythm right away, but the layups he was able to cobble together, mostly in transition, were enough to briefly extend the Sixers’ lead. He clearly felt more and more comfortable with each one, taking advantage of an open drive to throw one down over Oscar Tshiebwe.
Quentin Grimes slams it down with AUTHORITY 💪 pic.twitter.com/zFDvf4CMbV

— Liberty Ballers (@Liberty_Ballers) March 5, 2026
  • Upon returning to the game Maxey capped off a solid individual half. The opponent is what it is but he did a good job of navigating longer, taller defenders while also drawing contact. His last two attempts from deep were no good though as the Sixers as a team couldn’t close the half well. That was in part due to more struggles from Andre Drummond, who was surrendering rebounds to Mo Bamba and Ace Bailey on one end and getting called for illegal screens on the other. After George split a pair at the line the Sixers went into the break up by five.

Third Quarter

  • Maxey’s floater to open the second half didn’t fool anyone — this was still the third quarter Sixers. Utah responded with a 10-0 run to take their first lead of the night. He had been fairly bottled up in the first half but George started to spring loose moving off the ball and converted on his open looks.
  • Stops continued to come at a premium for the Sixers, but at least they found consistent offense for a couple possessions with Watford successfully backing down Filipowski. The backcourt got oddly passive during this stretch — Maxey went over five minutes in between shot attempts.
  • After the first half he had, it was pretty insane that Walker wasn’t out there to start the second. He immediately grabbed a putback basket when he did finally check back in, a rare sign of energy. It’s surprising how rigid Nick Nurse has been here given his reputation in Toronto. On top of not riding the hot hand in Walker, Tyrese Martin checked back in at the same point he did in the first half despite a rough first shift. Martin at least had a better go of it this time, getting to the basket once for a layup and hitting Drummond with a dump off. Another lob to Bamba though kept the Jazz in front by one entering the fourth.

Fourth Quarter

  • The decision to go back to Martin did age well despite this blog’s criticisms. He nailed two more threes to start the fourth, but those were the only points the Sixers were able to muster up in the brief minutes Maxey sat.
  • A rotation decision that was even more questionable and did not pay off was sending Kyle Lowry out for his second half shift as well. This team just has too many limited offensive players at the moment to play a guard that hardly looks at the basket.
  • Perhaps the Sixers were so surprised the Jazz put George back in the game they went into some sort of shock. Why else would they help off of him when he’s one pass away while he’s as scorching hot as he was? In all seriousness, it’s fine if the Sixers lost a game here and there due to their play style, but their style doesn’t make a ton of sense and they’ve lost more games than that because of it. Leaving NBA players open to shoot is and has not been a viable strategy in some time.
  • A challenge that swung possession back to the Sixers after another George three was exactly what they needed, and somehow they took advantage of the momentum. Maxey tried to turn the pace and kept going to the basket quickly. He actually missed more often than not but putbacks from Grimes and Adem Bona helped tie the game. After working their way to tie it back up, Maxey lost the ball and Collier quickly took it the other way to put the Jazz back up by two.
  • Grimes was able to knife his way through Utah’s zone and tie the game back up again with a layup. They finally caught a break on the other end with George missing a rushed three. Grimes drove again on the following possession and drew a foul, converting both to put the Sixers up with 16 seconds remaining. The ensuing Jazz possession ended with an open kickout to Filipowski but it missed. Fittingly it was Walker who secured the rebound and nail two free throws to ice the game.

The Sixers, mostly, just make me mad

It’s Oscar season, so I’ve had movies on my mind as of late. One of my favorite films of this decade is Wim Wenders’ Perfect Days. With a loaded soundtrack, it features the Velvet Underground song, “Pale Blue Eyes,” perhaps the greatest song the legendary Lou Reed ever wrote. It’s a song I’ve adored for years. It opens with this verse…

Sometimes I feel so happy
Sometimes I feel so sad
Sometimes I feel so happy
But, mostly, you just make me mad
Baby, you just make me mad

The song itself touches upon a love that can never fully come to fruition, one that is ultimately bittersweet in the end.

That’s how I feel about the Sixers as I grow older in life and with every successive game this season.

I’ve no doubt had fun moments with this specific team. VJ Edgecombe’s early season emergence had me dreaming of brighter days for the franchise that has seen so few in the last 40-plus years. The Joel Embiid experience, when the big fella has actually been on the court, has been revelatory. Who doesn’t want to see Tyrese Maxey drop bucket after bucket too?

It hasn’t ultimately resulted in something fully cohesive though. In fact, it feels like we’re on the final descent of a plane ride that we thought would take us to a championship parade, but mostly just flew in circles, landing us back in the hellscape of mediocrity.

I no longer possess the bandwidth in my early 30s to argue about the Jared McCain trade every second of the day online nor to get bogged down in the minutiae of internal debates that have defined this fan base over the last 15-or-so years. At the end of the day, the Sixers, mostly, just make me mad!

In a cruel twist of fate for a city starved for meaningful basketball, the Sixers were rewarded with one of the most talented players to ever pick up a basketball for their initial tanking efforts more than a decade ago, but, as disheartening as it is, the guy hasn’t been able to completely put together a healthy regular season and postseason enough to carry the Sixers to a championship, let alone an Eastern Conference Finals appearance. I had always held out hope that Embiid would have a 1977 Bill Walton run in him, an oft-injured, but downright transcendent big man who could deliver a championship to his city. It hasn’t happened and feels increasingly unrealistic whenever I think about this franchise. It doesn’t matter if I’m sitting on my couch, at the arena or lying in bed at night unable to sleep. I continue to dwell on unfulfilled promises and, frankly, the feeling that I may have wasted so much of my life in an all-consumed state about the Sixers.

The ups and downs are a part of the journey, sure. When the Eagles won their first Super Bowl, all the heartbreaks and losses from throughout their history only made that final breakthrough that much sweeter. I always expected to be on South Broad Street on one balmy summer night, spraying champagne everywhere and bullshitting about the random faces that populated the Sixers’ leanest years, the Furkan Aldemirs, the Francisco Elsons and the Brian Skinners of the past. Now? I’m just a walking encyclopedia of names that will be lost to history, much like the Sixers’ title hopes in this era.

I thought the culmination of the Process would be a cinematic triumph. It ended up being a film left in development hell.

Joel Embiid to be reevaluated in a week; VJ Edgecombe doubtful after missing practice

Well, that’s not the news you’re looking for heading into a tough road trip.

The Sixers returned to practice Friday before hitting the road for Atlanta and Cleveland and with that came some injury updates. The team told reporters at practice that Joel Embiid (oblique strain) is progressing through individualized strength and conditioning work and will be re-evaluated in a week.

VJ Edgecombe (lumbar contusion) also did not fully practice with the team, also just taking part in individual workouts. The team did not give his status for the Hawks game at practice, saving that instead for the official 5 p.m. injury report.

There was at least a shred of good news to come out of practice. Kelly Oubre Jr. was reportedly back today, so it seems like he should be good to go for Atlanta. He missed the Sixers’ previous two games with an illness.

Sixers say Joel Embiid has begun individualized strength and conditioning work but is not on the court yet. Will be evaluated again in approximately one week.

VJ Edgecombe did not participate in practice. Status for tomorrow TBD.

Kelly Oubre Jr. “is back.”

Heading into this road trip, it looks very possible the Sixers continue to careen all the way down into Play-In tournament positioning. They’re already 0-3 against both the Hawks and the Cavaliers, having taken on those teams at much fuller strength.

Within the next week, the Sixers play at the Hawks (a team they’re 0-3 against), at the Cavs (also 0-3), then second half of a back-to-back against the Grizzlies, followed by a game at the Pistons. No comments added.

— Paul Hudrick (@PaulHudrick) March 6, 2026

It says a lot about this roster construction that they are viewed as dead on arrival for these games despite having a guy who started in the All-Star Game running the offense. This isn’t even a dig at him or the reserves who are currently healthy and available. They just don’t make sense as a collective unit in the modern NBA. A stat that’s made the rounds a bit on Twitter after their win over the Utah Jazz is that neither their starting small forward (Trendon Watford) or power forward (Dominick Barlow) attempted a single three all game. At least getting Oubre back will help that.

Someone in the discord pointed out that the Sixers starting small forward and power forward last night didn't attempt a single three all game lmao. https://t.co/2W6dRYUTjh

Update: 5:05 p.m. ET

It felt unlikely that Edgecombe would be ready to go for Atlanta after not being a participant in practice. He wasn’t officially ruled out when the injury report dropped, but he is listed as doubtful for that one. With how shorthanded the Sixers are it wouldn’t be a surprise that they are keeping all their options available as long as possible, but no one wants to see the rookie rush back before he is ready.

Well, the shorthanded Sixers put forth a much more spirited effort than recent blowout defeats to Boston and San Antonio, but the usual third quarter woes reared their ugly head, and Philadelphia moved down into Play-In Tournament territory with a 125-116 loss to Atlanta. With the win by the Hawks, they completed the season sweep of the Sixers, which could come into play as a tiebreaker later with the two clubs bunched together in the standings. More crucially, Tyrese Maxey suffered a collision in the closing seconds of the game, suffering what looked to be an injury to his shooting hand, with later reporting revealing something may have happened to his finger.

I’m told Tyrese Maxey will receive additional testing tomorrow on his right finger. Nothing conclusive tonight

— Tony Jones (@Tjonesonthenba) March 8, 2026

It goes without saying, but with Philadelphia already missing several starters due to injury and suspension, losing Maxey for any significant period of time would be a true cause to panic. We’ll cross that doomsday bridge if and when we come to it. For now, let’s focus on the positives from Saturday’s defeat with our Bell Ringer nominees.

Tyrese Maxey: 31 points, 2 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals, 5 turnovers

gettyimages-2264823824.jpg

Early on, Maxey looked like a guy determined to put the team on his back Greg Jennings-style, scoring 15 points in the opening quarter and 22 overall in the first half. In addition to his usual self-creation off the dribble, the Sixers did a nice job working Tyrese off the ball, getting him a couple open looks from three and running him off screens to allow him to start running downhill towards the basket. Maxey made great reads with the ball in his hand, finding Kelly Oubre with an over-the-shoulder cross-court pass for a triple, and finding a rolling Adem Bona down the lane for a bucket. He also made some key defensive plays, showing active hands at the top of the zone to force a couple steals. Hopefully, all’s relatively well with the hand/finger, and we’ll be seeing Tyrese right back among the Bell Ringer options real soon.

Quentin Grimes: 26 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, 4 turnovers

gettyimages-2264814917.jpg

After slumping for a few games, Grimes had his second straight positive game on the offensive end, this time getting going from beyond the arc with a trio of triples. He also displayed an aggressive attacking mentality, finishing through contact around the rim on numerous occasions; his seven free-throw attempts marked his third-highest total on the season. Grimes got chippy with Onyeka Okongwu as the pair each got the better end of each other on some forays by Quentin to the cup. It was great to see some fire from Grimes and keep carving in there to great success. I really enjoyed their little tete-a-tetes in the painted area. With so many absences, the Sixers need contributions from everybody, and this was a really nice performance from Grimes.

Kelly Oubre Jr.: 24 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, 5 turnovers

gettyimages-2264796964.jpg

Kelly Oubre returned from missing a couple games due to illness and certainly looked more rested than drained in stepping back on the court. It was a solid all-around performance from Oubre. He hit Adem Bona perfectly down the lane with a pass out of the pick-and-roll for a dunk (remember when four assists seemed like a pipe dream from Kelly?). He clean picked Jalen Johnson’s pocket on one play, leading to a run-out bucket for Maxey, and he worked hard on the offensive glass — three o-boards all led to second-chance points. At his heart, though, Kelly gets buckets, and he did so very efficiently Saturday, shooting 10-of-15 from the field, including 3-of-5 from three. In particular, I liked when he recognized his size advantage against the defender, and muscled his way into the lane to can some short jumpers. Great to have you back, Kelly; the team certainly needs you.

Maybe one day the Sixers can have nice things.

Tyrese Maxey suffered a sprain of his right pinky in the team’s loss to the Atlanta Hawks Saturday night. He will miss the next two games and undergo additional testing, per the Sixers.

Sixers say Tyrese Maxey suffered a sprain of the right fifth finger. He will undergo additional testing and consultation in the coming days to determine a treatment plan. He is OUT for the next two games and further updates will be provided after the back-to-back.

The play occurred with 16.2 seconds left in the game. Maxey and Adem Bona collided while going for a loose ball. The All-Star guard went down immediately, favoring his right hand. He looked to be in a great deal of pain and went straight back to the locker room with the hand tucked inside his jersey.

Doesn't get much worse than this for the Sixers: Tyrese Maxey exits the loss early after immediately grabbing his right hand in pain after this collision with Adem Bona.

Not only will the Sixers be missing Maxey, but Joel Embiid (right oblique strain) and Paul George (suspension) will remain out when the team travels to Cleveland to take on James Harden and the Cavaliers. The only bit of good news is rookie VJ Edgecombe is listed as questionable. He’s missed the last two games with a lumbar contusion.

It’s not hyperbolic to say the Sixers’ season is on the brink. After Saturday’s loss, their record is 34-29. They’ve fallen out of a guaranteed playoff spot and sit in eighth. They’re only 1.5 games up on the Hawks and 2.5 up on the surging Charlotte Hornets. After the matchup with the Cavs, they play the very next night at home against the Memphis Grizzlies — without any members of the Big 3 — before hitting the road again to take on the East-leading Detroit Pistons.

The Sixers need to get healthy — and soon.

Well, you better hope you don’t see this team in the Play-In tournament!

The Sixers fell 125-116 to the Atlanta Hawks Saturday night, losing all four matchups in the regular season.

They are 34-29 and are now a half game behind the Orlando Magic for the sixth seed in the East.

Tyrese Maxey off a scorching hot first quarter led the Sixers with 31 points along five assists shooting 12-of-22 from the floor. More importantly though, he appeared to injure his shooting hand in the final seconds of the game.

Kelly Oubre Jr. hit the ground running after missing the last two games with an illness, putting up 24 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals shooting 10-of-15.

Not only did he win his personal battle with Onyeka Okongwu, but Quentin Grimes dropped 26 on 9-of-14 shooting. Jalen Johnson led all scorers with 35.

Joel Embiid (oblique strain), Paul George (suspension) and VJ Edgecombe (lumbar contusion) were all out for the Sixers while Jonathan Kuminga was out for Atlanta with left knee inflammation.

Here are some thoughts at the buzzer.

First Quarter

  • A fiery start for both offenses, with Maxey and Oubre both able to bully their way into their first floaters of the game before Oubre found a rolling Adem Bona for a dunk. Quentin Grimes committed a big no-no, fouling a three-point shooter, but he buried his first pull-up three to make up for that. The sign of everything falling for Atlanta was Dyson Daniels banking in a three from above the break.
  • Oubre’s start made it easy to see how missed he was the past two games. Blocking off passing lanes with Dominick Barlow was the only resistance the Sixers got defensively early. As they got more hands on the ball the Sixers were able to put together a run. Maxey picking Daniels’ pocket capped off nine unanswered Sixers’ points.

  • A big reason the offense looked good and got a lot of easy baskets early was how well they moved the ball. Nine of their 15 field goals in the quarter were assisted, with plenty of nice passes to highlight in there. They had a nice tic-tac-toe possession that ended with a wide open Andre Drummond charging for a dunk. Maxey threw a one-handed skip pass to the corner for an Oubre three. Maxey was just as effective scoring off the dribble, putting up 15 in the quarter to help the Sixers get out to a 10-point lead.

Second Quarter

  • One of the reserves who helped the first quarter end well and continued that to start the second was Cam Payne. On top of setting the floor well with five first half assists he was also poking the ball away from guys with success, with two early steals he converted into transition baskets. Trendon Watford didn’t check in until the second but had some quality minutes as well, finishing buckets for Payne before finding a cutting Jabari Walker for a basket of his own.

— Liberty Ballers (@Liberty_Ballers) March 7, 2026
  • Watford got under the skin of Daniels, likely by shoving him, so much so that Daniels gave him a hearty push in between plays, causing a small raucous. Initially it seemed that Daniels would get tossed but after replay revealed Watford wasn’t a totally innocent party double techs were given out so everyone could move on.
  • It feels like it’s been a while, but the Sixers were generating a lot of turnovers. The Hawks gave it away 13 times in the half and seven of those were steals. The only negative was those turnovers were the majority of stops they got in the half. The Hawks still shot 53.9% from the field.
  • That came back on the Sixers when they went without a field goal for over three minutes, surrendering a 9-0 run by the Hawks. It was another rough defensive shift for Drummond, with the Hawks scoring six of those nine points in the paint. Threes from Maxey and Grimes halted that momentum, helping the Sixers’ lead stay at seven heading into the break.

Third Quarter

  • It really is like clockwork. The Hawks came storming out of the break, taking their first lead since the opening minutes of the game with a slew of baskets at the rim. Oubre stopped the bleeding for the time being by driving to the basket. Grimes attempted yet another poster but had to settle for drawing a foul on Onyeka Okongwu. He had a better beat on it a few possessions later — Okongwu made a business decision and Grimes let him hear about it.
  • Grimes continued to get the upper hand of the exchange, beating Okongwu again at the rim with an up-and-under layup. Those flashy baskets were all the Sixers were able to muster during this stretch of the quarter. On top of Johnson’s drives, Nickeil Alexander-Walker found his three-point stroke to keep the Hawks afloat.
  • Turns out a Sixer did have a poster in them, as Oubre threw one down over Jock Landale. Unfortunately Oubre made the Hawks’ next two baskets very easy on them, inadvertently tipping a missed shot into his own hoop before getting his pocket picked for an easy transition basket. Grimes was really the only source of life in the third, getting to the basket for a potential and-1 to pull the Sixers within one. He missed the free throw though, and fouled CJ McCollum taking a midrange on the final possession of the quarter, pushing the Hawks’ lead back up to three.

Fourth Quarter

  • After dominating the possession battle for most of the game, the Sixers committed some really silly turnovers that stopped them from getting out of the gate to stop the fourth. They opened the quarter with an eight-second violation despite not a ton of full-court pressure from the Hawks. A Grimes turnover led to an easy bucket and Watford picking up his fourth foul of the game, and Watford threw up a bad shot that went out of bounds over the basket.

  • Those turnovers didn’t hurt the Sixers too much, muscling their way to the basket a couple of times tied the game back up. As soon as they had they let up a quick 8-0 run. It was surprising to see Drummond on the floor so much with the Sixers unable to get stops. It’s really frustrating when he can’t even win the rebounding battle. Zaccarie Risacher ripped an offensive board away from him, leading to an alley-oop to push the Hawks lead to double digits.
  • Johnson getting T’d up was huge as the Hawks were getting close to putting the Sixers away for the night. After converting the free throw, Oubre and Grimes each knocked down a three to pull them right back. The center position continued to trouble the Sixers even after Bona replaced Drummond. Bona dropped a pocket pass and wasn’t able to corral it enough to make the push shot. A few possessions later he got called for an initial screen. Johnson got him on a switch and blew by him for a dunk, and that basket effectively put the game away with the Sixers offense again going too cold in the second half.
  • A frustrating loss that pushes them further down the Eastern Conference standings was bad enough, but somehow the loss got worse. In the final seconds of the game the Sixers stole an inbounds pass, but in doing so Maxey and Bona collided. Maxey was writhing on the ground in pain, prompting a timeout and Maxey’s removal from the game. This team was already in big trouble, if this is serious they are flat out cooked.

The woefully shorthanded Sixers stood no chance against the Cavaliers on Monday, falling 115- 101.

The Sixers were without their top four scorers for this one — Joel Embiid (oblique), Tyrese Maxey (finger), Paul George (suspension) and VJ Edgecombe (back) were all sidelined.

Their absences were felt early and often as the Sixers could not find consistent offense and were forced to play zone defense until garbage time. A new Sixers addition made an impact in the final quarter, but there was not much else to point to in this one.

No rest for the weary either as the Sixers play tomorrow to close the back-to-back hosting the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday evening.

Until then, let’s get to the Bell Ringer

Quentin Grimes: 17 points, 6-of-13 FG, 2-of-8 3PT, 5 rebounds, 3 assists

Grimes was one of if not the only Sixer who could operate the offense at a respectable level provided the injury report. He took advantage of it both as a playmaker and scorer, when points were extremely difficult to come by.

He did most of his damage in the first half with strong drives and solid shooting. He started the game with a pair of threes which got the Sixers out to an early advantage, which he parlayed into determined attacks into the teeth of the Cleveland defense. He added a few dimes including a great look to Adem Bona underneath the basket following good ball movement from the Sixers.

Cam Payne: 12 points, 4-of-12 FG, 2-of-7 3PT, 6 rebounds, 4 assists

While Grimes made a strong impact in the first, Payne shook off some shooting woes late in the second quarter. Following a nice finish in the paint, he drained a pull-up three from the top of the arc after missing his first five attempts from deep.

There was also a ridiculous moment caught by Ky Carlin of Sixers Wire that may or may not have been intentional from the Cavaliers’ scoreboard graphics department.

— Ky Carlin (@Ky_Carlin) March 9, 2026

The haunt of Jared McCain endures for Sixers fans.

Justin Edwards: 14 points, 5-of-6 FG, 3-of-4 3PT, 3 assists, 2 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 turnover

Very strong shooting for Justin Edwards throughout this one, and helped create some tension for the Cavs in the fourth. In what has been an up-and-down campaign for Edwards, Monday’s showing was one of his better two-way performances. He picked off a couple errant passes, one of which he converted for a transition layup.

Dalen Terry: 9 points, 4-of-7 FG, 1-of-4 3PT, 4 assists, 3 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 block

Terry did made the most of his opportunity, especially during his stint in the fourth. He grabbed a couple offensive rebounds which turned into points, and initiated the offense with athleticism that stood out. He made his defensive presence known despite the score, and was the main engine in making things appear closer at the final buzzer. He should be a candidate for more minutes with the Sixers guard depth depleted.
