Editor-in-chief mailbag: Sixers are back from Abu Dhabi, readying for preseason home opener

gettyimages-2238823557.jpg

The Sixers played a pair of preseason games in Abu Dhabi last week. Unsurprisingly, the team looked overmatched against a mostly healthy New York Knicks squad in two losses. The team will look much different when any of Joel Embiid, Paul George, Jared McCain and Quentin Grimes — who finally signed his qualifying offer last Wednesday — are available. Alas, we really don’t know when that will be. We’ll see how quickly Grimes can get into the mix at practice this week.

The team clearly lacked shot creation outside of Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe and shot terribly from deep, but there were a few positive signs down the roster, including the play of two-way guys Dominick Barlow and Jabari Walker. The Sixers will have a few practices before welcoming the Orlando Magic to Xfinity Mobile Arena (still weird to type) for their preseason home opener Friday night.

Before all that, hit me with some of your questions!

Allen Iverson says he’s 6 months sober as he promotes book, documentary

gettyimages-2220320486.jpg

It’s been more than a decade since Allen Iverson, arguably the most iconic player in Sixers history, last laced them up. Now fully settled into retirement, Iverson is taking time to reflect on his life and career. He’s set to release a new documentary titled Allen Iv3rson, premiering on Amazon Prime later this month. Before that, his memoir Misunderstood hits shelves today, accompanied by a round of interviews where Iverson opens up about his journey, his legacy, and what’s next.

The 11-time All-Star sat down with CBS Mornings to discuss his new projects and reflect on his career. Early in the conversation, host Maurice DuBois asked Iverson why he chose to title his memoir Misunderstood.

“With this book, you’re hearing it straight from the horse’s mouth,” Iverson said. “Misunderstood comes from, you think you know, but you have no idea. There’s a lot of things people have said about me throughout my career. A lot of those things hurt.”

When asked what hurt him the most, Iverson replied, “Calling me a thug, when I know I’m not. [People] judging me off a look. I think that was one of the toughest things I had to deal with.”

Iverson’s path to basketball stardom was anything but easy. He grew up in poverty, carrying the weight of helping provide for his family from a young age. In 1993, he was convicted of “mob violence,” a charge that led to three months in prison before the case was eventually overturned. Hall of Fame coach John Thompson then offered Iverson a lifeline — an opportunity to play at Georgetown University. When asked about the state of college basketball today, Iverson said he “loved” that young players now have the chance to earn six figures while still in school.

“I was them,” Iverson said. “I was the guy that went to the refrigerator and it was baking soda, some water, and roaches everywhere. Like I’ve been that guy.”

Iverson even posed the question to himself: “Don’t you think they’re getting paid too much?” Then quickly answered, “They’re not getting paid enough.”

As many know, Iverson went on to dominate at Georgetown before being selected first overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1996 NBA Draft. He would go on to redefine the NBA both on and off the court, showcasing a style and swagger that were uniquely his own — and sparking controversy that helped shape the culture of the early 2000s league.

“It was something the NBA had never seen before. Nobody had come in dressing like that — the diamond chains, the watches, the cornrows. Now, every guy in the league has his own style and personality, and fashion means a lot to them. These days, I get my flowers for that — from them.”

Iverson went on to have a prestigious career — multiple All-NBA selections and the 2001 NBA MVP. There’s no shortage of accolades to choose from, but according to Iverson, his biggest accomplishment didn’t happen on the court. It came much later, just a few months ago to be exact:

“One of my best decisions that I’ve ever made in my life was [to] stop drinking.” When asked how long Iverson has been sober, he responded with six months. When asked how he felt, he responded with “better than I did when I was doing it”

“When you get drunk, you’re not how you usually are. The more and more I see it, on other people, the more and more it makes me happy about the decision [I made]. And the more and more I see how the people around me appreciate it — I love it.”

From a human perspective, it’s inspiring to see that Iverson has made positive changes off the court. He has so much to offer to players, fans, and the world at large. Few have faced the challenges he has and come out the other side successful. With books, documentaries, and likely other projects on the way, there’s plenty of Allen Iverson content for fans to look forward to.

Editor-in-chief mailbag: Embiid’s status, Grimes’ minutes, more

gettyimages-2238050813.jpg

The Phillies are down 2-0 and the Eagles finally lost a game. It’s the perfect time to talk about your Philadelphia 76ers.

You all had a ton of questions, so let’s dive right in!

Screenshot-2025-10-07-at-2.41.59%E2%80%AFPM.png
Screenshot-2025-10-07-at-2.46.10%E2%80%AFPM.png
Screenshot-2025-10-07-at-2.44.25%E2%80%AFPM.png

Will lump these three Joel Embiid/team outlook questions together.

Maybe it’s been underreported, but Embiid participated during live, 5-on-5 portions of practice on the Saturday before the team left for Abu Dhabi. He took off the next day, which makes sense, but him already doing 5-on-5 is an encouraging sign, especially considering that was not the case a year ago.

Embiid mentioned at media day that this is a totally different situation than last year. That makes sense. In 2023-24, he had surgery in February, returned in eight weeks, played some regular season games and a grueling six-game playoff series against the Knicks, and then was playing for Team USA not long after. In 2024-25, he had surgery in April — an arthroscopic procedure, not another meniscus repair — and hasn’t played competitive basketball since. It stands to reason that he’d be in a much better place physically.

I’ve been saying all summer that your mental health will be a lot better if you just assume Embiid and Paul George aren’t playing — and until they both do, I think it’s still a fair way to think. With that said, the Embiid news has been encouraging so far. I’m not telling you to put on your Embiid jersey and puff out your chest saying he’s going to win another MVP, but it does feel different from last season.

Given those listed options, I’m going with an extremely tempered version of A. He played 19 games last season under the circumstances I just discussed. I don’t think it’s crazy to think he’ll play in 20~ more games this season. Will he be the same two-way force he’s been when healthy? I don’t know. Nobody does. But I think even a very good but not great version of Embiid would be an enormous help.

I think the Sixers have enough talent — even with part-time versions of Embiid and George — to compete for a playoff spot. Between Tyrese Maxey, Quentin Grimes, Jared McCain (who should only miss a small chunk of games to start the season) and VJ Edgecombe, they’ll get enough shot creation and shot making. I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re a .500 team this season, so that over/under is tricky. I legit think they win around 40 games. I was as pessimistic as anyone this summer, but I think maybe the pendulum has swung a bit too far the other way. We’ll see!

Screenshot-2025-10-07-at-2.45.33%E2%80%AFPM.png
Screenshot-2025-10-07-at-2.45.04%E2%80%AFPM.png

These are loosely related, so I’ll tackle both here.

Daryl Morey is going to let Nick Nurse do the coaching. Nurse is going to try to win. So, if Grimes is the player who gives the Sixers the best chance to win, he’s going to play. I will say, I found it odd that the presence of Edgecombe was reportedly a negotiation sticking point with Grimes’ camp. I don’t think Nurse is going to hand anything to Edgecombe, but I think there’s a strong chance the rookie will take it. And that’s probably the same deal for McCain when he returns.

I think Grimes is a good player. He can be a starting-caliber 2 in this league. But Edgecombe and McCain have star upside. So if things go south in a hurry this season, that could change the equation. In the end, I think all four guards are going to play a ton. As Nurse said on media day, at a certain point, you just need to get your best players on the floor, regardless of position. He won’t shy away from playing three-guard lineups (and even teased the idea of a four-guard lineup).

We weren’t around Grimes a ton last year, but he seemed to be liked and respected in the locker room. He already had a relationship with Maxey before he was traded here. I think the coaching staff and his teammates appreciated how hard he played every night. Sure, he had a contract to worry about, but even after his incredible March he played through some injuries and tried to be as available as possible. It’s my understanding that Grimes is viewed positively by the Sixers’ organization, despite how ugly his restricted free agency got by the end. There’s still hope on their end that the pieces can fit and they can bring Grimes back long-term. I’m not so sure about that last part.

For the record, I’m not positive Embiid and George will miss the start of the season. Again, it’s fair to assume they will, so I’ll go along with the hypothetical.

Starters, you’re likely looking at something similar to what you saw in Abu Dhabi — Maxey, Edgecombe, Kelly Oubre, Jr., Trendon Watford (instead of Dominick Barlow) and Adem Bona. I wouldn’t be surprised if Grimes comes off the bench so that you’ll have some of his creation ability when Maxey is off the floor. I also wouldn’t be surprised if Nurse goes three guards out of the gate, preferring Grimes’ shooting over Oubre’s size. However it looks, I believe those will be the team’s top six to start the year.

Andre Drummond will likely have a role to start the season if Embiid is unable to play, but I think Bona gets the bulk of the minutes. It seemed like rookie Johni Broome was clearly third in the backup center mix. Nurse has also mentioned Jabari Walker as an option at center. I believe Walker and Barlow will get every opportunity to earn minutes and roles this season. Both players signed two-way deals, knowing the Sixers could use their size and their skillsets. I had Justin Edwards penciled in for a rotation spot, but he’s had a tough summer/fall.

As far as Kyle Lowry and Eric Gordon, I don’t see either having much of a role. Maybe if the team is just horrid from three over a stretch like they were in Abu Dhabi, Nurse will tap Gordon and hope he can help with spacing, but as of now, they seem like they’re both end-of-the-bench guys.

Screenshot-2025-10-07-at-2.42.35%E2%80%AFPM.png

I’ll start by disappointing you — I think it’s more likely they use the TMLE to convert Walker or Barlow to a standard deal. Our Bryan Toporek just had a great explainer on what the team can and can’t do with the TMLE.

As Bryan notes, it does feel like the team is hedging a bit. Being only $7 million over the luxury tax makes them an Oubre trade away from ducking the tax yet again, which would be a profoundly disappointing outcome. If the team is in the mix and wants to use it on a buyout candidate, it’s important to note the player they’re signing needs to have a 2025-26 cap hit lower than the NTMLE ($14.1 million) for the Sixers to be able to sign him.

There will be no shortage of buyout candidates in this new CBA world. With these situations, I focus less on specific players and more player types. The ideal type of player the Sixers could use is a combo forward who can rebound. Will that player archetype be available? I don’t know. A veteran big/combo big might not be a bad option if Drummond struggles again and Bona doesn’t seem quite ready.

Sixers practice notebook: Grimes returns, Embiid back at practice

2208778345.jpg

CAMDEN, N.J. — There was a familiar face back at the Sixers practice facility.

Guard Quentin Grimes, who ended his restricted free agency by signing his qualifying offer last week, was on the floor with his teammates Wednesday in the Sixers’ first practice since returning from Abu Dhabi.

The situation grew a little ugly this summer as negotiations between Grimes’ agent and the Sixers became more public and lasted into October. In the end, the sides couldn’t find enough common ground on a long- or short-term deal, so Grimes made the decision to sign his one-year pact for $8.7 million.

Despite the unpleasantness, the 25-year-old was happy to be back and was welcomed warmly by his teammates.

“I mean, not at all,” Grimes said when asked if there were any hard feelings. “I’m here to play basketball, you know what I mean? I try to control what I can control and that’s how hard I go in the gym. Preparation-wise, working out my body, and I leave [the negotiations] up to my agent and the front office. Hopefully, I’ll be able to be back here longer. I wanted to be back here on a longer-term deal, but I’m happy to be here right now and do everything I can to help this team win.”

Grimes had been back home in Houston working out. He managed to keep himself in shape by getting runs in at his alma mater, the University of Houston, thanks to Cougars head coach Kelvin Sampson.

So, how did he look back with the Sixers?

“He’s explosive and athletic, and he was energetic today,” Nick Nurse said. “He played hard and he looked like he’s been working out. … We had a lot of live action today and it didn’t look like his first day.”

Grimes’ demeanor seemed the same as it was last season. He has a workmanlike approach — he carries himself like a pro. So, it’s not surprising to see that the perceived offseason hostility did not carry over to the practice court.

The next step for Grimes, Nurse and the Sixers is to figure out how the pieces fit. Jared McCain will miss the beginning of the season because of UCL surgery on his right thumb, but Grimes still joins a crowded backcourt with Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe in the fold. The latter duo started both preseason games against the Knicks in Abu Dhabi.

One way to make sure all the guards play is to play them all together.

“I think that’s certainly on the table,” Nurse said when asked about potentially starting a three-guard lineup. “If you throw Jared into that mix, you got three or four, maybe.”

For years, fans have been dying to have Sixers lineups full of guys who can shoot, pass and dribble. This might not be the most conventional way to do it, but it should lead to some intriguing and versatile lineups.

Grimes will be in another contract year, but, to his credit, he’s eager to be a part of such a talented backcourt group.

“I feel like we can just push the pace,” he said. “That’s the name of the game right now. Pushing the pace, a lot of shooting, go out there and try to push the pace as much as we can. Getting up and down, putting as much pressure on the defense as we can and we have a lot of guards who can attack the rim, make plays, make the right reads, a lot of shooting, so if we just play for each other, and try to help each other out as much as we can, everything will take care of itself.”

Injury update

What would a practice notebook be without an injury update?

Joel Embiid participated in practice on Wednesday. The big man also participated in a live practice before the Sixers left for Abu Dhabi. The team noted that he’s increasing his activity and being evaluated daily.

Paul George is still only doing individual sessions on the court, but the team says he’ll be integrated into team activities in the coming days. Like Embiid, he’s increasing his activity and being evaluated daily.

There were no timelines offered beyond that on when either star will be available to play in a game.

Trendon Watford has been dealing with hamstring tightness. He hasn’t practiced and missed both games in Abu Dhabi. The free-agent signing had imaging done, which revealed no structural damage. He’s also limited to individual sessions at the moment, but is also increasing his activity.

The Sixers will open their home preseason slate Friday night against the Orlando Magic.

Kate Scott to lead USA Network’s WNBA coverage

gettyimages-1235756864.jpg

Women’s basketball is having a bit of a moment in the city of Philadelphia. Earlier this summer, the WNBA announced a new expansion franchise will be coming to the City of Brotherly Love in 2030. Last week, Unrivaled announced 3-on-3 games will be played in Philadelphia on January 30, 2026. So it’s only fitting that we have another connection with today’s announcement that Sixers play-by-play announcer Kate Scott will lead the WNBA coverage for USA Network. From The Athletic:

“USA Network announced a big splash into WNBA coverage last week, and now the league’s newest partner has its new voice. Kate Scott will be the lead play-by-play broadcaster for USA Network, including the regular season, the playoffs and the WNBA Finals.

Scott is entering her fifth season as the play-by-play announcer for the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers, but has a background in women’s basketball. She worked for the Pac 12 Network during the 2010s, calling games for current WNBA stars like Kelsey Plum, Sabrina Ionescu and Satou Sabally. Scott also called men’s and women’s basketball during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.“

If you missed the news, the WNBA recently signed an 11-year media rights deal to air at least 50 games annually on USA Network, including playoffs and Finals coverage in select years. Of course, in mentioning a new revenue stream for the league, I need to note that the current collective bargaining agreement expires at the end of this month, and things have been growing somewhat contentious on that front.

Regardless of how talks between the league and player’s union shake out, Philadelphians will certainly agree that USA Network selected an outstanding candidate to lead their coverage in Scott. Kate certainly keeps herself busy, also recently making history as part of her NFL coverage for Westwood One. Now, no matter what happens with the club currently playing in the Xfinity Mobile Arena, Sixers fans will be able to hear Scott calling playoff games in 2026.

Sixers practice notebook: Edgecombe sits out, PG does more

gettyimages-2238914642.jpg

While most of the recent injury updates surrounding the Sixers have been positive, there’s been an unfortunate add to the injury list: VJ Edgecombe.

The rookie was held out of practice Thursday with what the team described as left hip soreness. His status for Friday’s preseason home opener against the Orlando Magic has not been determined. The fact that he hasn’t already been ruled out could be construed as a positive.

Before the Sixers Rookie Injury Curse conspiracists have their moment, head coach Nick Nurse didn’t sound overly concerned when addressing reporters after practice.

“He was held out today. They’re going to check him out, and I think they’re gonna give an update tomorrow afternoon.” he said.

As for the positive: Both Joel Embiid and Paul George were able to participate in portions of practice. While neither took part in any live action Thursday, this is still a welcomed development.

For Embiid, he was able to take the practice floor in 5-on-0 situations a day after participating in live practice Wednesday. Again, that could be taken as a good sign — Embiid sat out entirely the day after he participated in a live practice before the Sixers left for their preseason games in Abu Dhabi. Nurse noted that Embiid did participate in practices while the team was overseas.

“When he’s out there and they tell me he’s available, he’s going,” Nurse said of Embiid. “I’m not checking his pulse every day, they’re just telling me how much he can practice and how he’s doing. … I think it’s progressing pretty good and he’s been in a lot of live action over the last 7-10 days.”

For George, it was the first time he’d done any type of team activity since camp started. He’d just been doing individual sessions previously. When asked, Nurse said he “wouldn’t say yes or no” about George missing the entire preseason. It’s unlikely we’ll get concrete updates on either player until they’re almost ready to play.

The veteran wing also participated in some spirited 1-on-1 work after practice along with Tyrese Maxey, Kelly Oubre Jr. and Justin Edwards.

Credit where it’s due — Edwards, who’s struggled mightily through summer league and two preseason games, was the last Sixer on a standard contract to leave the practice floor. Exhibit 10 signee Malcolm Hill was also getting up extra shots.

Quentin Grimes, VJ Edgecombe among inactives for tonight’s preseason game

gettyimages-2238914575.jpg

With the Philadelphia sports scene currently burning down in flames, the Sixers maybe have an opportunity to provide a balm and become something of a favored son by comparison in the City of Brotherly Love. However, to approach such status, they would have to buck the recent extreme injury trend of recent years. While preseason doesn’t ultimately matter in the big picture, tonight’s home debut against the Orlando Magic isn’t proving things are heading in a better direction.

VJ Edgecombe
Joel Embiid
Paul George
Quentin Grimes

Jared McCain
Trendon Watford

All OUT tonight vs. Orlando

— Kyle Neubeck (@KyleNeubeck) October 10, 2025

Now, again, this is the preseason, and guys shouldn’t be playing unless they’re relatively 100 percent. Most of these guys were expected to be out. Joel Embiid and Paul George haven’t reached the top of the ramp yet. Jared McCain is in the post-surgery recovery stage. Venerable veteran Kyle Lowry presumably only has so much tread left on the tires and there’s no need to wear any of it down in an exhibition contest.

The other absences are somewhat disappointing to various degrees. Trendon Watford’s recent hamstring tweak is unfortunate for a player that had a potential path to a starting power forward role. We’d like to see Quentin Grimes back in action following the contract standoff, and while he kept in shape working out with former coach Kelvin Sampson at the University of Houston, we have to assume this DNP status is related to only being back on the NBA practice scene for about a week.

Then, VJ Edgecombe missing time with a hip issue eliminates the biggest source of new excitement for the roster. The Sixers reported he is only day-to-day and is expected to return the practice next week, so we would like to think this is simply a case of the team finally being prudent with an injury. Edgecombe did participate in morning shootaround, which is encouraging.

Regardless, Philadelphia’s first preseason contest on the home court has lost a lot of its luster. Tyrese Maxey is back to looking like the meme of Will Smith looking around at an empty living room, but at least he has plenty of experience in the role.

Sixers Bell Ringer: Maxey, Barlow stand out in loss to Magic

gettyimages-2239832391.jpg

Bell Ringer Standings:

VJ Edgecombe – 1

Tyrese Maxey

All four major professional sports teams in Philadelphia lost over the last two days. It’s very likely the Sixers’ 128-98 preseason loss to the Orlando Magic at Xfinity Mobile Arena Friday night will be the most forgettable.

The game was actually much closer than the final score would lead you to believe — and the team was a lot more competitive Friday than either game in Abu Dhabi. Tyrese Maxey didn’t play after the first quarter and a deep bench group mustered just eight points in the fourth quarter, making the end result extremely lopsided.

The Sixers are now 0-3 in the preseason and will close out their exhibition slate next Friday night against the Timberwolves before the games count.

For now, let’s get to the Bell Ringer.

Tyrese Maxey: 17 points, 2 assists (12 minutes)

gettyimages-2239817468.jpg

Tyrese Maxey played the entire first quarter and looked like Tyrese Maxey. He got off to a bit of a shaky start, but was able to get to just about anywhere he wanted on the floor. The Magic were missing the dogged Jalen Suggs to hound Maxey, but Orlando still boasts a strong defensive team.

Maxey wound up dropping 17 points in 12 minutes. He went 7-of-14 from the field and 3-of-6 from deep. He was decisive and aggressive in his brief stint. He should also get credit for the offense flowing better overall than it did in the pair of losses to the New York Knicks. He looks ready for the regular season.

Dominick Barlow: 12 points, 9 rebounds (6 offensive), 1 steal

gettyimages-2239822597.jpg

If two-way players Dominick Barlow and Jabari Walker are in a competition for minutes, it’s clear Barlow is winning that battle. He was impressive early, crashing the offensive glass and making two athletic put-backs. He also hung tough defensively with All-Star Paolo Banchero, who shot just 4-of-12 on the night.

There’s a lot to like about Barlow’s game. He plays within himself, makes good decisions with the basketball, and plays hard. His length could also be a huge asset defensively. It’s early days, but the Sixers might’ve found something in this guy.

Kelly Oubre Jr.: 12 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 block

gettyimages-2239820463.jpg

Oubre wasn’t at his best in Abu Dhabi and he didn’t get off to a great start in this one, but the veteran wing also showed where he’s most valuable. He’s a guy that makes stuff happen — good and bad. He’d fallen back into tunnel vision mode to start the preseason and the game Friday.

He was much better in the second quarter when he was basically the offensive initiator with Maxey off the floor. To his credit, Oubre made meaningful strides last season to play more under control and find his teammates. He made a really nice read and pass on a lob to Adem Bona — a play that very likely would’ve been a shot for Oubre for most of his career. And his defense stood out as he was able to get under Franz Wagner’s skin, at one point drawing a flagrant foul.

Kennedy Chandler: 16 points, 5 assists, 4 steals, 2 rebounds

gettyimages-2239822628.jpg

Speaking of guys that just make stuff happen. Chandler definitely falls into that category. While the Tennessee product is on an Exhibit 10 deal and is likely to spend his season down in Delaware, he’s taken advantage of his opportunities with the Sixers. The undersized guard hounded the Magic’s ball handlers and was able to create for the Sixers on offense.

Maxey goes off in brief stint but Sixers fall to Magic in preseason action

gettyimages-2239817468.jpg

Surely, that’s the most devastating loss a Philadelphia sports team will suffer this week.

The Sixers dropped their (preseason) home opener to the Orlando Magic 128-98 Friday night.

Playing only the first quarter, Tyrese Maxey lit it up for 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting, making three of his six three-point attempts, along with two assists. Dominick Barlow took advantage of another starting opportunity, finishing with 12 points and nine boards, six of them on the offensive end. Kelly Oubre Jr. finished with 12 points while Kennedy Chandler went for 16.

The Sixers who did not suit up for this one included VJ Edgecombe, Joel Embiid, Paul George, Quentin Grimes, Jared McCain and Kyle Lowry.

Here are some thoughts at the buzzer.

First Quarter

  • It would probably be more of a red flag if this wasn’t the case in preseason, but it’s still been nice to see Maxey get wherever he’s wanted to so far. Beating his man has really been the only consistent way to create good shots so far. That was again the case to start this one. Maxey happened to miss a few of those looks to start the game with a rough shooting line, but evened things out as he got hot to end the quarter. This up and under layup seemed to really get him going.
Tyrese Maxey = scoring buckets!

He finished with 17 points in the 1Q 👀

— NBA (@NBA) October 10, 2025
  • Adem Bona once again picked up two quick fouls, though this time neither of those calls were very convincing. He quickly made up for it by emphatically blocking a couple of shots. Dominick Barlow also got the start again. The frequency that he crashes the rim with stands out on a team that’s been subpar at rebounding for some time now. He put back a couple early missed shots, and stole another rebound away from Wendell Carter Jr.
  • The rim protection from Bona seemed to stand out more once Andre Drummond checked into the game. He just looked like he couldn’t catch up, and that allowed him to get beat for some rebounds as well. It wasn’t all bad for him though as he deflected a pass to cause a fastbreak and even knocked down a corner three. Everyone’s having fun in the preseason! The Sixers trailed by two after a high-scoring first.

Second Quarter

  • Kelly Oubre Jr. also didn’t get off to a great start. He wasn’t able to get open much, and put up some bad shots as a result. He was able to steady the ship a bit in the second. He got out in transition for some easy looks and started looking for teammates as well. He got to the paint and threw a lob that was finished nicely by Bona.
  • Another up-and-down experience was Hunter Sallis’ attempts to get to his pull-ups in the midrange. He looked really comfortable when he was able to get it off — one took a really friendly bounce to fall for an and-1 in the first quarter. It wasn’t hard for the Magic to figure out where he wanted to go though, and they were able to turn that into some bad looks as well.
  • Kennedy Chandler hit a couple of nice layups, but Barlow continued to be the most interesting Sixer on the floor. He was just everywhere on the glass. Four of the six rebounds he grabbed in the half were on the offensive end. The only shot he missed of the half would’ve been an impressive twisting basket over Paolo Banchero. He also made a really nice cut down the baseline and was rewarded for it by Justin Edwards. A pair of free throws from Oubre tied the game at 66 before the break.

Third Quarter

  • It appeared Nick Nurse really started to pull the veterans at the half … the only thing was that there actually weren’t too many vets to pull. Aside from Maxey, it was literally just Oubre able to take the night off at halftime as Drummond ended up coming back into the game.
  • Justin Edwards wasn’t the complete train wreck he has been over the fall and summer, but he didn’t quite exorcise his demons either. He picked up a few ugly fouls finishing with five on the night. He fell victim to some ugly turnovers as well, including a travel on the first play of the second half. Overall he was still better with the ball, hitting his teammates for five assists, and swiping two steals on the other end.

— Philadelphia 76ers (@sixers) October 11, 2025
  • Jabari Walker got involved a bit towards the end of the quarter after a quiet first half. His minutes have certainly been a casualty of Barlow’s performance. He got on the board with a three, something Nurse said pregame he’d like to see more of. He hit a couple turn around jumpers near the paint but the Sixers trailed by four as the quarter ended.

Fourth Quarter

  • The personnel didn’t change much, but as the quarter started the Sixers once again couldn’t keep up with the scoring pace. On the bright side though, Johni Broome was able to avoid not one but two poster attempts. The first time he had to foul his way out of it, but the second one he did actually get his hand on the ball to deter the attempt.
  • Getting up threes was a big priority for Broome in summer league, but it’s not something he’s really done at all so far through preseason. After not taking any all game, he hoisted up three in the final minutes of the game, but one of those was a grenade with the shot clock winding down. It’ll be interesting to see if that’s something he’s actually planning on adding to his game.
  • The Sixers will wrap up preseason next Friday when they host the Minnesota Timberwovles. You can once again catch that one at 7 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Philadelphia.

Sixers host Magic in first preseason game back stateside

gettyimages-2193074921.jpg

Following a pair of preseason losses to the New York Knicks in Abu Dhabi, the Sixers are back on home soil and will give Philadelphia fans a firsthand look at the bones of the 2025-26 roster as they host Orlando in the newly cristened Xfinity Mobile Arena.

Although they’ve both participated in portions of practice this week, we do not expect either Joel Embiid or Paul George to take the floor tonight. Hopefully, that’s not a phrase we’ll need to use moving forward nearly as often as last season. Additionally, free-agent signing Trendon Watford also appears to be out after missing practice with a hamstring issue, and second-year guard Jared McCain remains out following thumb surgery.

Meanwhile, the most exciting notion of this preseason slate was getting to watch third overall pick VJ Edgecombe, who looks to be carving out a spot in the starting lineup for himself right out of the gate. However, reporting on Thursday stated the rookie is dealing with left hip soreness, and while it appears to be a minor issue, his status tonight is now up in the air. Given the Sixers’ injury track record with rookies (and everyone for that matter), poor VJ may need a metal plate inserted in his hip any day now.

The other new-ish development of note is the return to a Sixers uniform for Quentin Grimes, who did not travel overseas with the team in the wake of free agent contract negotiations coming down to the wire by way of his qualifying offer deadline. Nick Nurse hinted at using three-guard lineups including Grimes, and honestly, what else is he really to do with the guard depth on the roster? So that’s something to keep an eye on, although with McCain out and Edgecombe maybe joining him on the sidelines, it would appear to be less of a necessity this evening.

On the opposing sideline, tonight is the second preseason game for the Magic, who won, 126-118, Saturday night in Miami. Jalen Suggs and Moritz Wagner will both be sitting out this contest, listed as day-to-day with knee issues. We will, however, get to see Desmond Bane as part of Orlando’s starting lineup following the offseason trade to bring him over from Memphis for a package including four first-round picks. He scored nine points in just 13 minutes of his Orlando preseason debut. Meanwhile, 25th overall pick Jase Richardson played 24 minutes off the bench against the Heat, scoring 13 points.

The Sixers only have tonight and next Friday night against Minnesota remaining before the season begins in earnest in Beantown. Let’s see how much of tonight looks like dedicated preparation for the regular season, and how much is a true exhibition contest. Either way, hopefully Philadelphia can be on the right side of the scoreboard for the first time this preseason.

Editor-in-chief mailbag: Joel Embiid plays in Blue x White Scrimmage

This is not Liberty Ballers telling you to do cartwheels over it, but Joel Embiid did participate in the Sixers’ annual Blue x White scrimmage this past Sunday in Delaware.

Clearly, this was not the intensity of a Game 7, but take the positives where you can get them. Nick Nurse recently said that Embiid has participated in several live, 5-on-5 sessions since the team started practicing — something he did not do at all before the 2024-25 season. Again, don’t map the parade route, but it’s better than the alternative.

Anyways, let’s get to your questions!

What (and who) ESPN makes of Sixers’ Big 3 is interesting

In ranking the Big 3’s around the league, ESPN made an interesting change to Philadelphia’s core.

Well, it certainly can’t be any worse than last year’s Big 3.

Ahead of the upcoming season, ESPN’s Tim Bontempts went around and tiered each team’s core to see how they stack up against each other. Obviously, not every team has a three-star setup — if anything that approach is rapidly aging out of the league — but it was the top three players of each team the article was ranking.

What tier the Sixers fell in wasn’t surprising, but the Big 3 Bontempts chose for them was. Philadelphia was put in the seventh out of 10 tiers. It was one called “changing course,” and the only team they share it with is the Memphis Grizzlies. That certainly feels like the right spot for both of those franchises, as they each could be pivoting away from the stars they’ve built their team around for the last half decade in Joel Embiid and Ja Morant.

The Sixers’ Big 3 that got tiered for this year though was not their Big 3 they went into last season hoping to win a title with. Next to Embiid and Tyrese Maxey was not Paul George, but the most recent third overall pick, VJ Edgecombe.

It is hard to tell if this is more about belief in Edgecombe, and how impactful he could be right away, or if it’s just a reflection of how much George’s stock has dropped in the last year. Bontempts correctly pointed out that the availability of both George and Embiid are major question marks, but Embiid was still listed on the core despite his health being the less reliable of the two and perhaps a scarier long term outlook.

This would hardly be the first list that moved George down quite a bit from where he normally stands as a top player in the league. In ESPN’s top 100 players list, he plummeted 33 spots from the previous year’s ranking, going from 21 in 2024 to 54 in 2025.

The glass half full look at this though is that the Sixers are not just excited about what Edgecombe can become, but have hopes that he can meaningfully contribute from day 1. From how Nick Nurse has talked about him in preseason so far, it sounds like he will be a prominent member of the rotation on opening night, perhaps even in the starting lineup.

Tier lists and rankings are certainly not gospel, but the Sixers certainly didn’t imagine this is where their core would line up when they made their big splashes in the 2024 offseason.

Sixers announce signing of MarJon Beauchamp

gettyimages-2193034219.jpg

The Sixers have made another move as they’ve signed MarJon Beauchamp right before the end of the preseason. It is an Exhibit 10 deal, a source tells Liberty Ballers. In a related move, the team announced that they have waived Emoni Bates.

MarJon Beauchamp has been officially signed while Emoni Bates has been waived #Sixers pic.twitter.com/NVeN63xhGu

— Ky Carlin (@Ky_Carlin) October 15, 2025

The possibility of this move was first reported a few days ago by Keith Pompey of the Inquirer. Beauchamp had just been signed and quickly waived by the Portland Trail Blazers.

Beauchamp was a late first-round pick for the Milwaukee Bucks back in 2022, where he spent the first two seasons of his career on the fringes of their rotation. Averaging 13 minutes a night, he went for 4.8 points per game on 43.3%/35.5%/70.8% shooting splits. He also tallied 2.1 rebounds and 0.7 assists in that time.

He was pretty much entirely out of the rotation by his third season, getting just 4.5 minutes a night. At last year’s trade deadline, he ended up getting sent to the Clippers in a deal that acquired Kevin Porter Jr. He appeared in just three games for LA before being waived. He was able to finish the season on a two-way contract with the Knicks, appearing in six games for them.

With only one game left in the preseason for the Sixers, this move would seem to show that they’re interested in taking a flyer on him with the Delaware Blue Coats. The former first-rounder should get good opportunity to showcase his talent there. Sixers fans could get their first extended look at him Friday against the Timberwolves.

Will the Sixers’ throwback nostalgia play work on fans?

gettyimages-81344043.jpg

Break out your copy of Pokémon Silver, grab that DVD of The Matrix from your parents’ basement and get ready for a dancing, slam-dunkin’ rabbit because the early 2000s are back in Philadelphia. The Sixers had previously announced that they were bringing back their classic Allen Iverson-era black uniforms in honor of the 25th anniversary of the franchise’s 2001 Eastern Conference Finals champion team. On Monday evening, news broke that this season would see the return of beloved mascot Hip-Hop for select games this year in conjunction with this overall throwback play.

Is it too little too late for this nostalgia bait when people are more out on the Sixers than have been in over a decade?

If this was five years ago, for the 20th anniversary of the 2001 squad and the organization did this major throwback initiative rather than the “New Philadelphia” catastrophe, it would’ve been the coolest thing ever. Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons would’ve been the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference while sporting the sleekest look in the league. Maybe those black uniforms could’ve even helped them overcome their historic collapses in the second round against the Hawks (okay, well, maybe not…). Still. The timing was perfect.

Now? Eh. It feels like an attempt to capitalize on nostalgia when fan interest is at its nadir. The Sixers were once the most important entity in my life. I didn’t attend a game from the stands last season for the first time in 20-plus years. Sad stuff. It’s great for younger fans who never got to experience a whacky mascot or those uniforms that Iverson made iconic, but I’m sitting here wondering, is this less about doing something cool for the sake of it being cool and more so just trying to extra some quick bucks from my wallet?

I mean, it’ll probably work, at least on me. I was born in the mid-1990s. I still listen to The Strokes and 50 Cent and wear a black Dikembe Mutombo jersey every summer down the shore. My fellow millennials and I have just aged into the consumer class. It’s akin to the way we go to the grocery store now and hear a Ja Rule hit or a song by The Killers and think, “Oh, wow! They started playing good music in here!” No, you idiot. They always play music a generation-or-so behind in these public spaces because they want to attract schmucks like us who have cash to spend.

As James Earl Jones’ Terence Mann so eloquently stated in Field of Dreams, “For it is money they have and peace that they lack.”

Whatever.

I have greatly soured on having to watch the same ol’, same ol’ when it comes to the team’s stars, but, like a fool who just wants to feel the freedom of my youth once more, even if it’s just for a fleeting moment, I will probably lose my mind seeing VJ Edgecombe throw down a wild dunk in these bad boys while Hip-Hop goes berserk. Congrats, Sixers. You’ve won against this badly beaten down fan.

Sixers practice notebook: PG plays 3-on-3, McCain speaks

gettyimages-2238050608.jpg

We’re officially one week away from the Sixers opening the regular season in Boston against the Celtics.

But we still don’t know a whole lot about what the 2025-26 Sixers will look like to start the campaign.

Rotation players like Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Quentin Grimes, Kelly Oubre Jr. and Adem Bona should be out there. Veterans Andre Drummond, Eric Gordon and Kyle Lowry, along with two-way guys Dominick Barlow and Jabari Walker and rookie Johni Broome, should be available. Jared McCain will not be. It doesn’t sound like Trendon Watford will be either.

The two biggest question marks are Joel Embiid and Paul George.

Same as it ever was, a great poet once said.

The good news is both Embiid and George participated in most of practice Wednesday, according to the team. Especially notable for George is that he participated in 3-on-3, full-court, which marks the first time he’s been involved in live sessions. Embiid participated in those sessions as well.

Dare we say, things are trending in a positive direction?

“I don’t know, I thought he looked really good,” Nick Nurse said of George. “For live practice one, and the pace he was going, I think it was a challenge conditioning-wise and some of those things, but he looked good, played through it. You still see this like incredible shotmaker. You see it. I think he was moving very well. He didn’t seem tentative to me. … Positive steps from him today.”

On Tuesday, Nurse didn’t rule out the possibility of Embiid suiting up for the final preseason game Friday against the Minnesota Timberwolves. On Wednesday, he said the plan is to play his regulars. How much is still left to be determined.

The fact that we’re even in a world where there’s a chance Embiid and/or George could play on opening night is …. something. We’ll see what happens over the next week.

McCain speaks

As mentioned, we already know McCain will miss the start of his second NBA season because of surgery on the UCL in his right thumb. This after the dynamic guard’s rookie season was cut to just 23 games because of a torn meniscus. It’s been a tough 10 months or so for the charismatic 21-year-old.

He spoke to reporters on Wednesday for the first time since his injury occurred. He mentioned how it happened — a freak play where he was tagging a roller and got his thumb caught. He said he basically knew right away something was wrong. He got the results of his MRI on his way home from the practice facility and said he had to pull his car over. He called his mom and his psychologist through tears.

“The universe is throwing haymakers at me,” he said Wednesday. “It’s all a part of the process, I got to just continue to trust. It happens for a reason.”

To no one’s surprise, the 21-year-old is itching to get back out on the floor and join a backcourt loaded with talent.

“Being able to play off other guards is just something I’ve been able to do my whole life,” McCain said. “So I’m excited to just finally get back out there and play with them.”

McCain was an infusion of life both on and off the court for a team going through a nightmarish season last year. While the team would prefer to have him out on the floor and playing games, he’s still around the team as much as possible.

Though he’s still another two weeks away from being reevaluated, McCain has been doing on-court work using only his left hand and has been able to keep his conditioning up. Whenever he’s healthy enough to play, he’ll be ready.

“All I know is I get here pretty early in the morning and he’s usually already out on the floor doing something,” Nurse said. “And he’s continuing to have this ‘I’m not going to be denied’ attitude.”

Beauchamp arrives

The Sixers announced the signing of MarJon Beauchamp on Tuesday night. It’s an Exhibit 10 deal, a source tells Liberty Ballers, so expect the young wing to spend a great deal of time in Delaware with the Blue Coats.

Beauchamp is an interesting lottery ticket. He was a first-round pick of the Bucks in 2022 after playing for the now-defunct G League Ignite. After two-plus seasons in Milwaukee, Beauchamp had stints with the LA Clippers and New York Knicks to close out the 2024-25 season. He turned 25 years old this past Sunday and has intriguing athletic tools and length, with a wingspan over 7-feet.

So, what does he believe he could bring to the Sixers?

“I feel like I just bring good energy,” Beauchamp said. “My length, athleticism, I can shoot the ball, run out in transition and just play fast.”

Certainly fits the “younger and more dynamic” criteria. It’s worth noting that Beauchamp played under Adrian Griffin for a bit during his rookie year. Griffin was one of Nurse’s top assistants with the Toronto Raptors.

One thing this organization has done well in recent years is find guys on the margins. Perhaps Beauchamp fits into that category.

Editor-in-chief mailbag: What’s the deal with Joel Embiid?

gettyimages-2240265505.jpg

It comes as no surprise that most of your questions revolved around Joel Embiid. He’s a former MVP and one of the best players on the planet when healthy. His ability or inability to play could change the entire course of the Sixers’ season.

He was able to participate on a limited basis at practice Tuesday, which was planned, according to the team. He did live 3-on-3 work Wednesday. Head coach Nick Nurse also could not rule out Embiid possibly playing in the team’s preseason finale on Friday.

Let’s get into your questions. (You also all just had a lot of comments, which is also great! Keep the discourse going.)

Screenshot-2025-10-15-at-10.33.42%E2%80%AFAM.png
Screenshot-2025-10-15-at-10.30.59%E2%80%AFAM.png
Screenshot-2025-10-15-at-10.32.03%E2%80%AFAM.png

It’s likely not an accident that the Sixers haven’t uttered the phrase “ramp up” at all to start the 2025-26 season. A popular sort of alternative for Nurse has been “thresholds.” It’s all semantics.

The Sixers are in such a weird place. Anyone who confidently predicts them to be good or bad is telling on themselves. Most folks (myself included) have them hovering around .500 this season, largely because we don’t know so much. If things go right, they could make a little noise in the East. If things go wrong, they could be tanking to keep their top-four protected pick. The middle of those feels like the most probable outcome.

One important lesson I’ve learned as far as fans and expectations: I don’t gatekeep fandom. Feel how you feel. If you’re the type who wants to think of the best possible outcome and just enjoy the ups and downs of the season, great. If you like to prepare yourself for the worst-case scenario so you won’t be crushed by disappointment, also very fair. I would just say: Embiid and Paul George even potentially being ready for the season opener is better than the alternative.

About the idea of it being “the year,” I do get what you’re saying. Like if Embiid and PG can play 50ish games and be relatively healthy for the postseason, this could be their last crack at winning something meaningful. My sincere hope is that if the team is showing signs of life around the deadline, the front office makes a meaningful addition or two. Shedding salary to duck the tax during Embiid’s age-31 season and George’s age-35 season would be a massive, massive disappointment.

Screenshot-2025-10-15-at-10.30.05%E2%80%AFAM.png

At this point, it looks like all systems go for VJ Edgecombe. My feeling is the hip issue wasn’t a big deal, but the team decided to take precautions over him playing a meaningless preseason game, much like they did with his hand issue during summer league. (Hey, maybe they’re learning!) I would be very surprised if Edgecombe isn’t in the starting lineup on opening night.

George was able to participate in live 3-on-3, full-court reps at practice Wednesday. Nurse said he looked good and when the team has done its post-practice 1-on-1s that have been open to the media, George has looked healthy and fluid. Maybe he’s not ready for opening night, but I don’t think he’s that far off … to the point where I wouldn’t close the door on him suiting up for the opener.

Obviously, Jared McCain will miss the beginning of the season, but he shouldn’t miss a ton of time. Trendon Watford is still dealing with hamstring tightness. It doesn’t sound like he’s particularly close to returning — which is a shame because it seemed like this could’ve been a big opportunity for him. Perhaps two-way signee Dominick Barlow will take advantage of the open minutes at the four.

For the opener, I would not be surprised if the Sixers have close to their full complement of rotation players. McCain is out. It seems like Watford will be. George might not play in Boston, but he isn’t far off. Beyond that, the only question mark is Embiid, who I believe is trending towards being available.

Screenshot-2025-10-15-at-10.33.19%E2%80%AFAM.png

Think I’ve answered a variation of this question before, but I’ll answer again for folks who might’ve missed it.

Kyle Lowry is basically this team’s Udonis Haslem. He’s here to help guys like Maxey, McCain and Edgecombe while being a culture-setter. I think he plays sparingly this season and is never a regular part of the rotation.

Eric Gordon is here for similar reasons, but his shooting could help this team at some point. Look how much the Sixers struggled shooting in Abu Dhabi. They could use a guy like Gordon to help space the floor, especially while McCain is out. I know it went largely unseen because last season was terrible, but Maxey’s best stretch last season (in which he was genuinely awesome) occurred while sharing the backcourt with Gordon. That spacing could be necessary, but again, I do not foresee Gordon as a regular rotation player.

Sixers practice notebook: PG plays 5-on-5; who plays in preseason finale?

gettyimages-2238050464.jpg

The Sixers will play their final preseason game Friday at home against the Minnesota Timberwolves. After that, it’s time for opening night in Boston against the Celtics next Wednesday.

The injury updates from Thursday’s practice were mostly positive:

  • Joel Embiid did not participate, but it was a planned day off, per the team. Nick Nurse still did not rule Embiid out of the preseason finale. We’ll know more about his status Friday afternoon or evening.
  • Paul George took part in live 5-on-5 sessions a day after participating in live 3-on-3 action on Wednesday. It does not sound like George will play Friday, but it also doesn’t seem like the door is entirely shut on him playing the regular-season opener. “Yesterday was his first day live and … today was a short amount of 5-on-5, so we just have to keep waiting,” Nurse said.
  • Trendon Watford still seems a bit away from being ready to play while dealing with hamstring tightness.
  • Jared McCain remains out after UCL surgery. He’ll be reevaluated in roughly two weeks.
  • All other Sixers players should be available Friday night — including Quentin Grimes, who has yet to play a preseason game, and VJ Edgecombe, who missed the team’s preseason home opener last week.

No matter if Embiid plays or not, Nurse is looking to get his available regulars as much time as possible.

“We need to get … the main guys playing as long and as much together as we can tomorrow,” Nurse said. “That would be goal No. 1. Not quite sure how that’s going to look yet until probably the pregame presser tomorrow.“

It will also be hard to put too much stock into who starts Friday. Will Nurse prefer a traditional lineup with someone like Dominick Barlow at the 4? Will he use three guards? Could he maybe even use four with Kelly Oubre Jr. seeing time at the 4? It’s all going to be fluid because the team’s situation is fluid in general.

Something worth keeping an eye on — there’s been a lot made of the team’s new offense, which should feature more ball and player movement. How Embiid adapts to a more equal-opportunity offensive approach will be worth monitoring if he plays Friday and beyond.

One last note: it does seem like the vibes are fairly high heading into the regular season:

It appears Adem Bona didn’t fulfill his (ongoing) rookie duties — which resulted in his tire being removed and popcorn being filled in his car.

Vibes seem great with the Sixers!

Joel Embiid cleared to play in Sixers preseason finale hosting Timberwolves

(Photo by Jesse D. Garrabrant/NBAE via Getty Images)

UPDATE, Oct. 17, 11:30 a.m. ET: Philadelphia 76ers star center Joel Embiid has been cleared to participate in the team’s preseason finale on Friday night against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

NBA insider Chris Haynes posted the initial report to social media on Friday morning, citing league sources.

Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid (knee) has been cleared to make his preseason debut tonight against the Minnesota Timberwolves, league sources tell me. https://t.co/JkCtM3B8LP

— Chris Haynes (@ChrisBHaynes) October 17, 2025

This will be the first preseason action Embiid has seen since 2023.

Oct. 16:

It’s almost time for some real basketball!

But first, one more preseason bout. The Philadelphia 76ers will host the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday evening at Xfinity Mobile Arena in the team’s preseason finale. As exhibition games come to a close, most of the focus is on the status of the Sixers’ players and who is ready for the regular season to get underway, so let’s dig into that.

Joel Embiid did not participate in the team’s practice on Thursday, but that was a planned day off for the center, per the team. Whether he will play Friday night in the preseason finale will be determined day-of, according to Sixers head coach Nick Nurse.

“I think we’ll know tomorrow,” Nurse said at practice Thursday. “I mean, I think there’s still that same chance that he will, but we’ll know tomorrow.”

Paul George also continues to progress in his injury recovery, participating in live 5-on-5 action for the first time at Thursday’s practice after participating in 3-on-3 Wednesday. Nurse was not definitive on George’s prospective status for Friday night nor next week’s season opener, but it did sound like PG is not quite at the point yet where they expect him to play in the preseason finale.

Shams:

"I've been talking to people in Paul George's camp and I'm told that it is not expected that he will be suiting up for opening night…he is making significant progress (on his knee rehab) and a return to debut should be shortly into the regular season" pic.twitter.com/cSjJkMs2ko

— Oh No He Didn't (@ohnohedidnt24) October 16, 2025

“Yesterday was his first day live and … today was a short amount of 5-on-5, so we just have to keep waiting,” Nurse said on Thursday.

ESPN’s Shams Charania has put out a report apparently from “people in Paul George’s camp” that the forward is not expected to be suiting up for the Sixers’ regular season opening night on Oct. 22 when they take on the Boston Celtics. Whether or not that turns out to be true, we just have to keep waiting… like Nurse said.

Charania also reported that the team is “hopeful” for Embiid to be ready for both the preseason finale and the team’s regular season opener.

(Yes… I’d assume the team is hopeful for that. Not sure what information this report is supposed to add, for whatever it’s worth.)

Moving on to the rest of the team, Jared McCain (UCL surgery) remains out and Trendon Watford (hamstring tightness) is still seemingly a bit away from being ready to play. That being said, everyone else — including Quentin Grimes and VJ Edgecombe — are expected to be available as of time of writing.

“We need to get … the main guys playing as long and as much together as we can [Friday],” Nurse said. “That would be goal No. 1. Not quite sure how that’s going to look yet until probably the pregame presser [Friday].”

How that ends up actually coming together, we will just have to wait and see. We will keep you posted as more definitive information on player availability for the finale becomes available.

Ready or not, it’s time to wrap up the 2025-26 preseason. The Sixers and Timberwolves will tip off in South Philadelphia at 7 p.m. ET.

Sixers Bell Ringer: Embiid, Grimes in midseason form, Maxey-Edgecombe duo takes off

gettyimages-2241718220.jpg

For the first time since February, Joel Embiid played a basketball game. Sure, it was only preseason, but given how miserable the last calendar year has been for this franchise and fanbase, it’s something.

Led by Embiid and a dynamic guard trio, the Sixers took down the Minnesota Timberwolves 126-110 for their only preseason win Friday at Xfinity Mobile Arena. The Timberwolves sat most of their regulars after a rare preseason back-to-back (why?), but there were still plenty of positives to take away.

Paul George, Jared McCain, Trendon Watford and Kyle Lowry remained inactive.

The next one is for real as the Sixers will head up to Boston next Wednesday to take on the Celtics in the season opener.

Until then, let’s get to Bell Ringer.

Joel Embiid: 14 points, 8 assists, 7 rebounds, 3 steals (18 minutes)

Embiid played around 18 minutes and left the game healthy. That alone is great news. He also looked pretty good.

The former MVP wasn’t playing full throttle — nor should he for so many reasons — but he had several impressive moments. There was a lot made of Nick Nurse’s new offense and how Embiid would adapt to a more equal-opportunity system. Well, he had eight assists in 18 minutes. It appears he’ll do OK.

Embiid’s drives to the rim were encouraging, including a strong coast-to-coast finish late in the first half.

There was a scary moment … because of course there was. Towards the end of his second half stint, Embiid drove hard to the basket. Unfortunately, Leonard Miller was waiting to take a charge — a bold move, even against a slimmed down Embiid. Embiid was on the floor for a moment and got up awkwardly. He was able to get up under his own power and jog back down the other end. He checked out soon after, but it was his time to come out.

Again, he came out of the game feeling healthy. That’s a huge win.

Tyrese Maxey: 27 points, 7 assists, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 block

Tyrese Maxey might be the safest bet to have a bounce-back season in 2025-26. He followed up a strong (albeit brief) showing against the Orlando Magic last Friday with another against the Timberwolves.

What stood out most was how often Maxey played off the ball while rookie VJ Edgecombe played some point guard (more on that below). Utilizing Maxey’s speed and shooting in off-ball reps could unlock something with the team’s entire offense.

That and his two-man game with Embiid will work. Maxey had seven assists on the night. Though the play below wasn’t an assist, the gravity created by the Maxey-Embiid two-man game led to a wide open look.

VJ Edgecombe: 26 points, 6 rebounds, 5 steals, 3 assists

A bold prediction: VJ Edgecombe is going to be good.

The rookie was everywhere Friday night. He played the passing lanes, got out on the break, finished at the rim, made threes — you name it, he did it.

Edgecombe looked like the best player on the floor at the end of the third and start of the fourth. He produced several highlight-reel plays had nearly a handful more.

As mentioned, Edgecombe has assumed point guard duties throughout the preseason. It’s been a pleasant surprise to see him take those responsibilities and run with them. Even Nurse postgame said Edgecombe is so far ahead of where he anticipated the rookie would be.

You also saw the potential of this Maxey-Edgecombe backcourt. As a duo, there might not be a faster backcourt in the NBA. They routinely got out on the break and found opportunities. It’s easy to see how they’ll be able to complement each other this season.

How good will Edgecombe as a rookie? We’ll see. What we know for sure is he’s going to be a lot of fun to watch.

Quentin Grimes: 22 points, 5 assists, 2 rebounds, 3 steals

Some fans might’ve soured on Grimes after the offseason drama surrounding his restricted free agency, but he reminded everyone on Friday that he can play. Nurse has raved about the shape Grimes kept himself in and, after shaking off a bit of rust early, Grimes started to assert himself.

While Grimes displayed much of the offensive skillset he showed with the Sixers last season, his defense might’ve stood out even more. He routinely walled off Minnesota’s guards and is a difficult player to screen.

The Sixers have an embarrassment of riches at the guard position.
