The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed on a deal with the San Francisco 49ers that will send QB Alex Smith to the Chiefs in exchange for a 2nd round pick in this year's draft as well as a conditional mid-round pick in next year's draft. Following the trade, the Chiefs are expected to release former starting QB Matt Cassell. The trade can't officially happen until March 12th, when the 2013 league year begins.

Smith went out with a concussion last season and was replaced by Colin Kaepernick for the rest of the season. He played well at the beginning of the season, though. Before his injury he had completed 26 of his last 28 passes.

I think this is a good move by the Chiefs. Cassell wasn't working for them, and I definitely wouldn't want to risk another bad season by staying with him.

What are you guys' thoughts on the deal?

Well the Chiefs needed a QB, and there aren't any great quarterbacks in the draft (in my opinion) so this trade makes perfect sense for both teams.

Honestly thought the Jets were going for him. Instead we got Garrard and still have "The Sanchise".

Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow, and Alex Smith would be a pretty good quarterback duel. I don't think any of them are too good, but Alex Smith could very well be the best out of the three. :P

So yeah, responding to the opening post, I feel like this was a really good move by the Chiefs. Matt Cassell was good in New England that one season Tom Brady was out for the entire season, but we have not seen very many good things from him since then. It is pretty clear that Matt Cassell just wasn't the future for the Chiefs based on how they have done these past few seasons, so it was time for a change. There are not any great quarter available in the draft, so they might as well go after Alex Smith. He proved he deserved to be a starting quarterback in San Fransisco, so I expect him to do the same in Kansas City.

Tebow will probably be pawned off to the Jaguars. :)

That has been said for a while now, but it still hasn't happened. I think he could be the starting quarterback in Jacksonville. Blaine Gabbert is supposed to be the future of the franchise, but I don't think anyone has been impressed by him so far. He is decent, but not great. Then there is Chad Henne. I think Chad Henne is a pretty good quarterback, but I think Tim Tebow would barely edge him out in a quarterback duel. Also, Tim Tebow is a fan favorite, so if Jacksonville quickly figures out that they are on the path to another disappointing season, they can play Tim Tebow for the fans. They would definitely still be losing with Tim Tebow, but at least they would be selling tickets and jerseys.

As a Kansas City resident, I can say that everyone was pretty happy with this trade. It was apparent that Cassel has been a major letdown on the Chiefs, and there were a couple games at Arrowhead I went to where fans actually booed at his passes. The Chiefs have been a joke the past 3 years with him as the QB (though there were other issues as well). I'm excited to see all of the changes coming to Kansas City.

Matt Cassell got hurt in a game last season and the Chiefs fans cheered. Alex Smith is better than Matt Cassell, but I don't feel like Alex Smith will make a difference. The Chiefs are still a mediocre team.

Unfortunately true. Chiefs seem to be consistently in the bottom of the rankings. Frankly, it is probably a kiss of death for Smith to come here. But, I do hope for the better it does work out for the sake of Chiefs and the job of Andy Reid.
