49ers may be getting good news in quest to trade Deebo Samuel

It looked like the San Francisco 49ers were going to run into the worst-case scenario following wide receiver Deebo Samuel’s trade request.
Samuel, entering the final year of his contract, was going to require an extension from any team that traded for him. That made dealing him tough for San Francisco since any team interested in signing him long-term could just wait until he was released and not have to give up draft capital to get him.
A report from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler could open a door for the 49ers to salvage at least some draft capital when they lose Samuel. Fowler in an episode of NFL Live on Thursday indicated there were multiple teams interested in acquiring the 2021 All-Pro.
Transcript via Bleacher Report:
“I just checked in on this. I was told that several teams have expressed interest, so at least preliminary talks on a potential trade have happened between Samuel, his agent and the team.”
As with all trade reports we have to read between the lines some.
On its surface, this would be great news for the 49ers. If multiple teams are interested in signing Samuel, then one may be more willing to give up draft capital for him knowing they could lose him to another team if he hits the open market. A proverbial bidding war gives San Francisco more chances to trade him.
Reading between the lines makes this report a little more dubious.
This could be a report from the 49ers hoping to drum up interest in Samuel. They leak that several teams are interested in hopes of spurring action from a team waiting on Samuel to get released.
Samuel’s camp could also be leaking this in an effort to help the 49ers the same way.
If there really is a bidding war beginning for Samuel though, we may see a trade which seemed unlikely when he was first granted permission to seek a trade. The 49ers would love to get something back in his eventual exit, but if they don’t, we can all but count on his release.
