Passing out grades for the deadline moves

The 2026 NBA trade deadline has come and gone, and the Hawks’ roster looks fairly different as compared to earlier in the season. We have yet to see three of the acquired players play for the team, but enough dust has settled by now to judge the totality of the moves.

Let’s get to it by going through each move chronologically (according to when the news broke), and how I grade them based on short-term and long-term impact:

CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert for Trae Young

This one was the blockbuster that kicked off things early in January. Enough time has passed, and so I won’t go through the minutiae of it all.

Trae Young had been seeking an extension since the summer given that he holds just a $49 million player option for next season and nothing beyond that. The Hawks neglected to offer him an extension.

Ultimately Young’s value as a defense-deficient, ball dominant guard outweighed his track record as a productive offensive engine. But the team was still motivated to find a resolution — even as Young was sidelined with injury. And so, he, his agents, and the team quickly found a home for him in the District of Columbia.

Coming the other way was microwave combo scorer (now in a sixth man role) CJ McCollum and big-bodied wing Corey Kispert who is equally comfortable shooting or driving on the offensive end. Both are clearly both useful depth players with the former on an expiring contract and the latter on a deal that extends for two more years at $13.5 million annually (plus a team option in 2028-29).

Given the drama that surrounded his financials for half a season, the Hawks did do well to act early and turn the keys to the franchise over to Jalen Johnson. But frankly, they dealt Young at his lowest value and netted just so little in return (they couldn’t even muster one measly pick?).

Time will truly tell if the Wizards can build a consistent winner around Young. But without the benefit of hindsight, I’d have to say the team just barely passed this test — and certainly without flying colors.

Grade: C-

Duop Reath and two second rounders for Vit Krejci

Duop Reath has since been waived, but he was never the true focal point of this deal.

Vit Krejci was an outstanding development story for the Hawks. From arriving from Oklahoma City for very little, to getting cut, to playing for both the Iowa Wolves and later the College Park Skyhawks on a two-way deal. Along the way, he gained more and more confidence in his three-point shot.

By the time he was sent to Portland at this deadline, he had become one of the league’s deadliest three-point shooters. Dating back to 2023-24, he has shot 42% on 4.1 attempts per game.

In the 2024 offseason, he signed a multi-year minimum value deal to remain with the Hawks. But recent moves may have crowded out his position in the rotation going forward.

Atlanta sent him to Portland this week in a deal that allows him to see minutes for a Blazers team that badly needs shooting. And in return, the Hawks netted two second-round picks: their own pick back in 2027 that they gave up in a deal to land Mouhamed Gueye in the 2023 NBA Draft and New York’s 2030 second rounder.

So, they landed two picks for a player they didn’t see in their plans any more — although admittedly a fan favorite on a great contract. Sentimentalities aside, it’s a minor win and nothing more.

Grade: B

Jock Landale for cash considerations

This is an easy one. When did cash considerations ever grab a rebound? Or block a shot? Or put the ball in the bucket?

I promise I had this take prior to Landale’s explosion in his first game with the Hawks. Landale tied his career high in points (26) and assists (5), grabbed a ton of rebounds (11), swatted shots (4), and he set a new career high with made threes (5) in a narrow home win on Thursday.

The burly center brings a level of physicality as a rebounder and space clearer in the lane that the Hawks desperately need, plus he capably stretches the floor to space the court for Jalen Johnson, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, and others to get downhill.

He even drove from Memphis to Atlanta just to open up a can on the Utah Jazz (who were clearly shorthanded and not particularly interested in winning). Landale was in the middle of a breakout season with the Grizzlies before being sent to Utah in the Jaren Jackson Jr. trade, so he decided to take out his revenge on a team that saw no use for him.

With the Jazz facing a roster crunch, especially with their glut of bigs, Atlanta had the wherewithal to pounce and grab him for straight cash, homie.

It’s an obvious A from me.

Grade: A+

Jonathan Kuminga and Buddy Hield for Kristaps Porzingis

This is a weird one that I have yet to wrap my brain around.

It’s clear that from Atlanta’s point of view, Porzingis’ continued absences from the lineups were difficult to chew on. No one is to blame here, of course, as ‘KP’ was very open about his battle with post-viral syndrome and/or postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS).

Everyone involved believed he was passed those health struggles, but clearly he was not — not to mention a recent Achilles injury that kept him out of his final games with the Hawks.

On the other side, Golden State has had a very public saga with their former number seven overall pick who has largely seen inconsistent minutes at best for a fading dynasty. Steve Kerr made some very candid comments about where things went wrong on Thursday evening:

Steve Kerr to ESPN on Jonathan Kuminga: "He needed the runway to make more mistakes…It was very tough not being allowed to make those mistakes. For us as a staff, it was tricky trying to develop him while we were trying to win. I think it’s as simple as that."

Full quote pic.twitter.com/WNneAegbaP

— Anthony Slater (@anthonyVslater) February 5, 2026

So a deal came together along wherein two teams felt like a change of scenery was best for everyone involved.

Jonathan Kuminga gets a chance to show he can use his athleticism for good and be a focal point for an NBA team. It often gets lost that the talented but mercurial forward is just 23 years old. Atlanta is taking a bet that in a different situation, his pre-draft promise can truly shine. I, however, am less than enthused about that prospect:

Kuminga thoughts

Good: the Hawks are last in the NBA in drives/100 and 29th in free throw rate. JK's downhill pressure will help those areas.

Bad: the Hawks are first in assist rate, but JK is a ball stopper with a career 4 asts/100 and 3.2 TOs/100. I question the fit there.

— Wes (@bloghawk) February 5, 2026

Also, 33-year-old Buddy Hield is along for the ride because why not? You can never have too many shooters. Unlike Kuminga, who has a $24.3 million team option for next year, Hield does also have a $3 million partial guarantee, so the Hawks did pick up a tad bit of future money here.

I really don’t know how this will go, but the Hawks got something for a player who was perpetually absent from the lineup, so I’m a tad cautiously optimistic — although mostly skeptical at best.

There’s very little commitment from either side beyond this year. But it’s just so strange a move that it may just work.

Grade: C

Gabe Vincent and a second rounder for Luke Kennard

It’s tough to see Kennard go just as he picked up the scoring aggression. At first, it looked as though his passivity in games would be an anchor on his impact despite gaudy shooting efficiency.

But once the light switch flipped telling him to look for his shot more, he was a genuine weapon off the bench. He’ll figure to continue that hot streak in LA as he plays off Luka Doncic, LeBron James, Austin Reaves, and others.

On the other side, Gabe Vincent has not performed as well as hoped when he signed a three-year, $33 million contract off the back of a playoff run with the Miami Heat. In the first season after signing his deal, he had arthroscopic knee surgery and only saw the court for 11 games with the Lakers, all off the bench.

He has bounced back somewhat the past two seasons to be a passable contributor off the bench, but even this year he has dealt with a lumbar back strain.

There’s no doubt that the Lakers are getting the better player in the deal, although Vincent still has some utility as a point guard defender, ball handler and decent three-point shooter. But it’s likely he doesn’t play many if any meaningful minutes off the suddenly logjammed Hawks bench.

Cynically, similar to the Krejci deal above, this trade came down to swapping two players with expiring deals (Vincent makes just $500,000 more than Kennard) so that the Hawks could pick up a Lakers 2032 second-round pick. Kennard could have helped the team more down the stretch of this season, but the long-term outlook was prioritized over the short term here.

Another meh win, I suppose.

Grade: B-

What would you grade these deals?

The Atlanta Hawks were in action on Thursday evening to face the Utah Jazz. With the NBA trade deadline behind them, the Hawks didn’t have most of the players that they traded for in this matchup, but they were able to have Jock Landale in the lineup after acquiring him yesterday. In fact, Landale made the start at center in his first game with the Hawks.

As for the Jazz, they made a big splash acquiring Jaren Jackson Jr. at the deadline, but he was not active for this game.

Landale made an impact early in the game, grabbing multiple offensive rebounds, knocking down a three-pointer, and getting blocks.

Dyson Daniels was able to knock down a three-pointer earlier in the game.

It was a back and forth game between both teams, and the Hawks were able to get stops when they needed on the defensive end to stay within striking distance.

Landale continued his defensive impact on the court with another block.

To end the first half, the Hawks went on a huge run led by Landale, as he knocked down a few three-pointers to cut the deficit. The Hawks ended up with the lead going into halftime, 61-60.

Both teams traded baskets to start the second half, but it was the Jazz that was able to pull away with the lead for most of the third quarter. Landale continued his hot streak throughout the quarter, and his teammates set him up with easy shots.

Getting down to the stretch of the game, the Hawks were able to execute and get some shots to go down. With a chance to tie the game or take the lead, the Hawks gave up several offensive rebounds, but in the end they were able to get the stop.

Landale came in clutch once again with a big three-pointer to give the Hawks a 117-116 lead.

The Hawks came back down on the other end and got a big stop, and the Jazz had to play the foul game from there. Alexander-Walker made both of the free throws to give the Hawks a three-point lead with 13.8 seconds left.

The Jazz came down after a timeout and knocked down a three-pointer to tie the game, courtesy of Ace Bailey. The Hawks didn’t call a timeout and decided to take the ball down the court, and Alexander-Walker was the player to deliver, knocking down a tough jumper with 1.3 seconds remaining.

Johnson finished with 22 points, 16 rebounds, and 15 assists, Landale finished with 26 points and 11 rebounds, and Alexander-Walker finished with 23 points.

The Hawks will be back in action on Saturday to face the Charlotte Hornets.

The Atlanta Hawks were in action on Saturday evening to face the Charlotte Hornets. The Hawks were coming off a clutch win against the Utah Jazz a couple of days ago, with big help from Jock Landale, who made his debut with the team. The Hawks also will have some new players this time around, with Buddy Hield and Gabe Vincent being active.

As for the Hornets, they’re probably the hottest teams in the league, and they came in on a eight-game winning streak.

The Hawks were also able to get Onyeka Okongwu back in the lineup.

The Hawks started the game hot from the three-point line, and Okongwu knocked down two of them early.

Things got a little physical late, with less than two minutes between Okongwu and Mousa Diabate, and they both received technical fouls.

Going into halftime, the Hawks and Hornets were tied at 60.

The Hornets took the lead to start the third, and were up by as much as seven points. That didn’t bother the Hawks, and they started a run that led them to taking the lead.

The Hawks took the lead for a moment, but the Hornets got it back after getting several shots in the paint. The Hornets kept the lead late into the quarter, and the Hawks were able to get some stops to keep it a three-point deficit with 32.1 seconds remaining in the game.

Johnson was able to go to the free throw after getting fouled, and knocked down both to cut their deficit down to one point. The Hawks played the foul game from there, and LaMelo Ball knocked down both to give the Hornets a three-point led again.

The Hawks decided not to call a timeout after the free throws, and though Alexander-Walker was able to get a clean shot to tie the game, he missed. Brandon Miller went to the line and made both of his free throws, and the Hornets found themselves up 124-119 with 12 seconds left.

That ultimately led the Hawks to a loss and extended the Hornets’ win streak to nine games.

Johnson finished with 31 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists, Risacher finished with 18 points, and Okongwu finished with 16 points.

The Hawks will be back in action on Monday to face the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Hawks send statement in Miami as Johnson’s triple-double powers wire-to-wire win over Heat

gettyimages-2259805089.jpg

MIAMI, FLORIDA - FEBRUARY 03: Dyson Daniels #5 of the Atlanta Hawks drives against Jaime Jaquez Jr. #11 of the Miami Heat during the second quarter of the game at Kaseya Center on February 03, 2026 in Miami, Florida. The Atlanta Hawks sent a clear message Tuesday night, controlling the game from the opening tip and never relinquishing command in a wire-to-wire win over the Miami Heat. The Hawks defeated the Heat 127 – 115. Atlanta came out aggressive and confident, jumping out to a double-digit lead in the first half behind sharp ball movement and efficient shooting, while Miami struggled to find offensive rhythm.

Atlanta wasted no time establishing control. Crisp, purposeful passing carved up Miami’s defense early, leading to open three-pointers and downhill driving lanes. The Hawks shot an impressive 13-of-22 in the opening quarter, building a 33–23 lead while holding the Heat to just 38 percent shooting. The early execution set the tone and forced Miami to play catch-up for the rest of the night.

When the starters sat, the Hawks didn’t blink. Atlanta’s second unit brought a noticeable jolt of energy, maintaining pressure on both ends of the floor. Active hands on defense fueled transition opportunities, and the Hawks continued to stretch the floor with confident perimeter shooting. Miami briefly cut into the margin midway through the second quarter, but Atlanta answered with a decisive 9–2 run to reassert control. At halftime, the Hawks held a 58–47 advantage — a reflection of efficiency and discipline rather than unsustainable shooting.

Predictably, Miami came out of the locker room with renewed urgency. Defensive pressure ramped up, the pace quickened, and the Heat trimmed the deficit to six midway through the third quarter. But this is where Atlanta showed its growth. Instead of forcing shots or rushing possessions, the Hawks leaned into execution. They slowed the game, hunted favorable matchups, and continued to generate quality looks. Every time Miami threatened to seize momentum, Atlanta responded with a timely bucket or a crucial defensive stop. Entering the fourth quarter, the Hawks still held a comfortable 10-point cushion.

At the center of it all was Jalen Johnson, who continues to make triple-doubles feel routine. Johnson delivered another all-around masterpiece, finishing with 29 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists. He attacked mismatches in the paint, stepped confidently into open jumpers, and consistently made the right read when Miami sent extra help, serving as the engine behind Atlanta’s offense.

Veteran leadership also played a major role, as CJ McCollum led the way with a polished scoring performance. McCollum scored 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting, including 6-of-9 from three, mixing pull-up jumpers with deep-range shots to keep Miami’s defense honest. His shot-making opened the floor for everyone else and prevented the Heat from loading up defensively.

Atlanta’s depth again proved decisive. Luke Kennard provided a spark with 12 points on near-perfect shooting, while Corey Kispert added 11 points and high-energy minutes off the bench. Zaccharie Risacher chipped in across the board, making his presence felt on the glass and with smart positional defense.

First-timer to stay busy during All-Star weekend

Jalen Johnson has ascended in meteoric fashion during his five-year basketball career.

Johnson has gone from G Leaguer, to rotation player, to franchise cornerstone in that short span. And now, he’s been named to his first All-Star Game in his career. The weekend festivities will take place in southern California, primarily in the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles, the home of the Clippers.

But that won’t be his only involvement next weekend. It was recently announced that he will join fellow Duke Blue Devils Kon Knueppel, a rookie phenom, and Corey Maggette, a retired 14-year NBA veteran, in the NBA All-Star Weekend Shooting Stars Challenge.

In that competition, he’ll take on these three other trios:

  • Team All-Star: Scottie Barnes, Chet Holmgren, Richard “Rip” Hamilton
  • Team Harper: Derek Harper, Ron Harper Jr., Ron Harper Sr.
  • Team Knicks: Jalen Brunson, Karl Anthony-Towns, Allan Houston

The contest makes its first appearance since the 2015 All-Star weekend. In it, there are seven spots on the floor with which the players can shoot from and earn various amounts of points with 70 seconds. Please see the attached PDF for a full set of rules and regulations.

Many will remember franchise icon Dominique Wilkins not only taking part in three straight competitions but winning the three most recent editions of the competition — a veritable dynasty as part of Team Bosh with NBA star Chris Bosh and WNBA star Swin Cash.

The event will take place on Saturday, February 14 after 5 PM EST on NBC and streaming on Peacock.

MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA - FEBRUARY 09: CJ McCollum #3 of the Atlanta Hawks dribbles the ball against Jaden McDaniels #3 and Anthony Edwards #5 of the Minnesota Timberwolves in the fourth quarter at Target Center on February 09, 2026 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. One decisive quarter proved too much for the Atlanta Hawks to overcome.

The Hawks surrendered 40 points in the second quarter and never fully recovered in a 138–116 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday night at Target Center.

Atlanta was shorthanded, as Jalen Johnson and Dyson Daniels were both ruled out before tipoff. Johnson missed the game due to left knee inflammation after being listed as questionable on the injury report. The Hawks opted to sit him as a precaution in the second game of a back-to-back road set.

Daniels was also held out with right ankle inflammation after being listed as questionable earlier in the day, as the team chose to prioritize his recovery.

Despite the absences, the Hawks showed early fight, trading baskets with Minnesota in an up-tempo first quarter and trailing by just seven points.

The game swung decisively in the second quarter, however, as Minnesota capitalized on defensive breakdowns, pushed the pace and found open lanes to the basket. The Timberwolves shot efficiently and used crisp ball movement to stretch the margin to double digits by halftime.

Atlanta showed resilience coming out of the break, trimming the deficit in the third quarter behind improved ball movement and shot-making. But the Hawks were unable to string together enough defensive stops to seriously threaten Minnesota down the stretch, as each run was quickly answered.

The Hawks were led offensively by CJ McCollum, who finished with a game-high 38 points and kept Atlanta afloat even as the deficit grew. Nickeil Alexander-Walker turned in a strong all-around performance with 23 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. Onyeka Okongwu added 14 points and five rebounds, while Corey Kispert and Jock Landale each scored 12 points.

For Minnesota, Anthony Edwards led the way with 30 points, consistently breaking down Atlanta’s defense. Julius Randle recorded a triple-double, and Rudy Gobert was perfect from the field, anchoring the paint on both ends as the Timberwolves controlled the game.

The loss dropped Atlanta to 26–29 on the season and underscored the challenge of sustaining defensive intensity against elite Western Conference teams.

While the Hawks’ offense continues to show it can score with anyone, turning games like this into wins will require consistent defensive effort over full quarters, not just brief stretches.

Risacher named as replacement to Rising Stars challenge

Last year’s number one overall draft pick Zaccharie Risacher was overlooked on the initial list for the 2026 Rising Stars event at the All-Star Weekend that will take place in under a week’s time. I outlined his injury-riddled disappointing second season earlier.

But with Ajay Mitchell of the Oklahoma City Thunder ruled out for the challenge due to injury, the NBA needed to backfill one of the sophomore spots. Today, we got some fortunate news for Risacher:

Hawks forward Zaccharie Risacher will replace Thunder guard Ajay Mitchell on Team T-Mac in the 2026 Castrol Rising Stars (2/13, 9 PM ET, Peacock).

— NBA Communications (@NBAPR) February 10, 2026

Risacher is averaging 10.7 points and 3.5 rebounds per game — both figures fewer than his rookie season when he finished second in Rookie of the Year voting.

No Dyson or Jalen. CJ McCollum scored some points. The Hawks once again played no defense.

Fourth quarter comeback not enough as Hawks fall 110-107 to Hornets

The Atlanta Hawks were in Charlotte on Wednesday evening to face the Hornets. This was the last game for the Hawks before the All-Star break, and it would’ve been good for them to get a win, especially against a Hornets team that is right behind them in the standings. These two just saw each other on Saturday, and the Hornets walked away with the win.

In this matchup, they were without Moussa Diabate and Miles Bridges after their recent suspensions. As for the Hawks, Jalen Johnson, Dyson Daniels, and Zaccharie Risacher were available after being on the injury report coming into the game.

The Hawks ran early, and when they did, they got good shots.

After being down early, the Hawks fought back and took the lead, with the help of Johnson and Daniels.

— Atlanta Hawks (@ATLHawks) February 12, 2026

The Hawks had a hard time stopping the Hornets from the three-point line, but mostly Kon Knueppel. That led them to fall into a deficit for the rest of the quarter, but the Hawks kept getting good shots.

Little bounce pass & a kiss off the glass that's nice pic.twitter.com/kGK2RZA2AY

— Atlanta Hawks (@ATLHawks) February 12, 2026

The Hawks went into the second quarter trailing 35-27.

Things didn’t get better for the Hawks to start the second, and they kept getting burned by the Hornets on the three-point line. With that, they found themselves down by as much as 17 points midway through the second.

The Hawks trimmed their deficit a little, and they did by doing what they do best.

— Atlanta Hawks (@ATLHawks) February 12, 2026

The Hornets cooled down substantially from three, and that helped the Hawks to continue to cut down their deficit down the stretch of the quarter.

The Hawks’ defense was on another level down the stretch of the first half, and they turned that into easy offense to find themselves down three points.

— Atlanta Hawks (@ATLHawks) February 12, 2026

The Hornets only way to extending their lead was by free throws at this point, but the Hawks kept fighting. Johnson had this nice move to get to the basket.

Smooth step through by JJ for the basket pic.twitter.com/074TzUBNDe

— Atlanta Hawks (@ATLHawks) February 12, 2026

The Hornets got a three-pointer to go to end the first half, and the Hawks trailed 58-49 going into halftime.

It’s almost as if the Hawks forgot what they did to get back into the game late in the first half, because they started the second half giving up two three-pointers from LaMelo Ball. What was a single digit deficit turned into a 19-point deficit for the Hawks, and they had to once again fight out of it.

Johnson did his best to try and keep the Hawks in it.

— Atlanta Hawks (@ATLHawks) February 12, 2026

It was going to take more from the Hawks to get back into the game, but they found it hard to get stops when they needed it the most.

The Hawks’ struggles continued throughout most of the third, as they shot 1-for-11 from three. They still didn’t let things get too out of hand, and going into the fourth, they trailed 89-75.

Things started to click for the Hawks to start the fourth, and it was CJ McCollum who brought them back to life.

Mouhamed Gueye hit some big shots to start the quarter as well, and it helped the Hawks cut down their deficit to single digits.

— Atlanta Hawks (@ATLHawks) February 12, 2026

The one thing that helped the Hawks get back was going into a zone defense. After a while, the Hornets did find a way to beat it, and they started getting back to making three after three. The Hawks had just enough juice on offense to answer back when they needed to.

— Atlanta Hawks (@ATLHawks) February 12, 2026

Down the stretch, the Hawks won two challenges back to back which were huge for them, and they were able to score again to cut down their deficit even more.

Dyson floater cuts it to 6 🛟👀 pic.twitter.com/oGaxsD8Gj1

— Atlanta Hawks (@ATLHawks) February 12, 2026

The Hawks got another stop, and Okongwu was fouled at the three-point line, and he knocked down all three to make it a three-point game. The Hawks got one more stop, and Johnson cut it down to a one-point game after a runner.

Though the Hawks got another stop, they were not able to score on other end this time, as they turned the ball over. They had to foul at this point, and Knueppel went to the line to make it a three-point game.

The Hawks had a timeout, but they elected not to use it, and take it down the court. There was a lot of dribbling going on, and it ended up turning into a contested Okongwu three-pointer that did not go in, and the Hawks walked away with a loss.

Johnson finished with 19 points, 13 rebounds, and nine assists, Daniels finished with 21 points, Okongwu finished with 18 points, and McCollum finished with 17 points.

The Hawks will be back in action next Thursday against the Philadelphia 76ers.

A recap of Jalen Johnson’s first All-Star Weekend

Becoming an All-Star is probably every player’s dream, and some are able to make it a reality as they climb the ranks in the league. This year, Jalen Johnson put himself in that position, averaging 23.3 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game midway through the season. Not only was he selected to the All-Star Game, but he was right in his hometown, taking in the moment.

The league made sure to keep Johnson busy throughout the week, and the content was flowing from Friday morning to Sunday night.

He already had a pair of shoes in mind, and they matched his jersey.

“This is fire. This is dope,” Johnson said.

Johnson seemed to be getting a scope of everything on Day 1, and he happened to run into another Hawks’ faithful, Dominique Wilkins.

Later on in the day, Johnson met up with some young fans to take some pictures and sign autographs. One of the young kids spoke highly of the Hawks’ star, saying he believed in him since he was drafted.

That night is when the festivities began, and Johnson pulled up to the celebrity game to catch some of the world’s stars go up against each other.

Johnson was interviewed by Monica McNutt during the game, and during the segment, Richard Jefferson called him out by saying he doesn’t think he has enough bounce to participate in the dunk contest. In that same breath, Johnson said that he would be in the dunk contest one day.

A schedule lookahead as Hawks look to finish regular season strong

At various points across January and February, the Atlanta Hawks looked like a team that needed the All-Star break. Heading into the break on the back of a three-game losing streak would be one such indicator that the break was a welcome one, and could use the team to rest, while also looking fondly at Jalen Johnson’s first All-Star game appearance, and subsequent triumph as part of the winning effort of Team Stars.

Now, the focus returns to the Atlanta Hawks, the team, as the second, unofficial ’half’ of the season looms large. So, with that said, let’s look ahead to the schedule that lies ahead for the Hawks, break it down month-by-month, and unpack the remaining schedule as the Hawks look to improve their place in the Eastern Conference standings; currently sat in 10th with a 26-30 record.

Starting with the remaining month of February:

Hawks-sched-feb-2026-post-asg.jpg

Total games: 5

Home games: 4

Road games: 1

Back-to-backs: 1

Longest road trip: 1 game

Longest homestand: 4 games

Opponent winning percentage: 37.5%

The Hawks couldn’t have asked for much better in terms of an ease of schedule after the break. Yes, a difficult game against the Sixers on the road to return — and a much better than expected Sixers team since we last did this exercise in the preseason — is not entirely helped by the game being on the first night of a back-to-back with the Miami Heat in town the following night.

However, a game against the languishing, and openly tanking, Brooklyn Nets and, more notably, two fixtures against the Washington Wizards provide an ample opportunity for the Hawks to get a winning streak going. It’s never a guarantee; the Hawks have an unfortunate history of failing to beat the Wizards in seemingly favorable situations and expectations…

Of course, two Washington fixtures mean two meetings against former Hawk Trae Young for the first time since his in-season trade to Washington. However, Young’s injury status is currently unknown ahead of these two fixtures; the last update issued by the Wizards was that Young would be re-evaluated after the All-Star break.

That said, I’d be very surprised if he played in either of these games, with Washington objectives for the season pretty well-set. Still, there will be, undoubtedly, a tribute to the former franchise player and, hopefully, a kind reception for a player who, yes, was flawed, but provided a lot of memorable moments in his time as an Atlanta Hawk.

To March:

Hawks-sched-march-2026-min.jpg

Total games: 15

Home games: 10

Road games: 5

Back-to-backs: 1

Longest road trip: 2 games (twice)

Longest homestand: 5 games

Opponent win percentage: 48%

The last ‘full-on’ month of the NBA season is on that is, again, pretty kind to the Hawks. They have a predominantly home-heavy schedule, with 10 of their 15 total games taking place at State Farm Arena. A mixed bag of opponents range from heavy-hitters such as the Eastern Conference-leading Detroit Pistons on the road, two games against the Boston Celtics, and a difficult road-tilt in Houston. You have a range of play-in teams such as Portland, Orlando, and Golden State, in addition to the play-in chasing Milwaukee Bucks.

Finally, you have a number of teams who have either actively given up — or very close to it — and these include the Nets, two games against the Dallas Mavericks, the Grizzlies, and the Sacramento Kings. Those two games against the Bucks could be critical to determining seeding, especially if Giannis returns for the Bucks. Similarly, the Orlando game may carry significant weight in the final standings among those play-in teams.

Recent acquistions/departees will be reacquainted in the month of March, with both Jonathan Kuminga, Buddy Hield, and Kristaps Porzingis all facing former teams in March 21st’s meeting against the Golden State Warriors. The Atlanta meeting between these two teams is usually a boisterous affair, especially if Steph Curry is in action, and with everything surrounding the Kuminga trade, I’m sure this game will be one to circle. A homecoming at the beginning of the month for Vit Krejci, now with the Portland Trail Blazers, is sure to be a popular one as Krejci was very well liked by his teammates.

Finally, to April:

Hawks-sched-april-2026-min.jpg

Total games: 6

Home games: 2

Road games: 4

Back-to-backs: 0

Longest road trip: 2 games (twice)

Longest homestand: 1 game (twice)

Opponent win percentage: 53.3%

A difficult stretch to finish, and an extremely important couple of games, most notably on the road in Orlando and in Miami. At least one of those games is very likely to be a rehearsal of a play-in fixture to decide a potential postseason berth, in addition to potentially determine seeding and, potentially, who plays at home in the play-in tournament, versus being on the road. All three teams would consider their scenarios this season as disappointing, and none will provide an inch of advantage over fellow Southeast Division rivals. Time will tell whether the decisions from Orlando and Miami to stand-pat at the trade deadline — compared to the very active Hawks — will pay off in comparison to each other.

Elsewhere, a ‘gimme’ against the Brooklyn Nets is about the only respite compared to two games against two Eastern Conference juggernauts in the New York Knicks, and the rolling Cleveland Cavaliers (twice). Whether the Cavaliers will still be rolling by this stage of the season remains to be seen, but they are absolutely improved following the James Harden trade, and likely to be fighting for seeding by this stage of the season, with any seed from two-to-fifth still reasonably plausible for the Cavaliers. In other words, the Hawks should not expect an easy pass in these spots, and that will include the Knicks game, too.

Per Tankathon, the Hawks have one of the easier strengths of schedule remaining in the NBA; while this is a guarantee of absolutely nothing, it does suggest — and as we’ve looked at now — that the Hawks have a favorable situation to end their season on a more positive note. With the additions of Kuminga and Hield, in addition to Corey Kispert and CJ McCollum a month prior, the Hawks will hope that time in practice and integrate further into the team will provide them with a higher ceiling than when Young was with the team, and when Porzingis absent more often than not.

Irrespective of to what degree of success the Hawks achieve doing this, if any, their end-of-season scenario is unlikely to change: they’ll, very likely, be playing the play-in tournament for the opportunity to enter the NBA postseason as a seventh or eighth seed…just as they for a number of years now. However, a look not-too-far-East to New Orleans may provide a greater sense of optimism heading out of this season than previous seasons…

Until next time!

Roster tidbits: Houstan promoted, Djurisic waived, Kuminga sidelined

It’s been a busy day before the return to action for the Atlanta Hawks. First, reports broke about forward Caleb Houstan being converted from his two-way deal onto a standard contract for the rest of the season:

The Atlanta Hawks are converting shooting wing Caleb Houstan to a contract for the remainder of the season, sources tell ESPN. Houstan, 23, is in his fourth NBA season and shot 40% from 3 over the last two years in Orlando and 40% in the G League this season.

Since the Hawks already had 15 standard contract players, they needed to waive someone. Unfortunately, that someone was a Serbian international who hadn’t even played a regular season minute with the Hawks:

We have requested waivers on Nikola Đurišić.

Djurisic was the 43rd overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, but after sustaining a foot fracture in the 2024 Summer League campaign, his NBA career just never took off. After signing a rookie minimum deal last season, he averaged just 9.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game in the G League regular season — not nearly impressing enough on a poor Skyhawks team.

Also, this afternoon, we’ll have to wait until later the debut of Jonathan Kuminga. This latest update from the Atlanta Hawks states that he will be re-evaluated in a week’s time for a bone bruise in his leg:

An @emoryhealthcare injury update:

Forward Jonathan Kuminga, who sustained a left knee bone bruise while playing for Golden State at Dallas on Jan. 22, is progressing in his rehabilitation.
