Steelers add 2 more to offseason roster

gettyimages-2219544706.jpg

The Steelers signed defensive back Doneiko Slaughter and offensive lineman Lorenzo Thompson to reserve/futures contracts on Tuesday, the team announced.

Slaughter went undrafted in 2025. He scored a 6.67 RAS ahead of the draft, running a 4.38-second 40-yard dash at 6’0, 190 pounds. Playing college football at Tennessee and later Arkansas, he had a reputation of delivering highlight-reel hits.

Slaughter spent training camp with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but didn’t make the team’s roster or practice squad. He returned one kick on college and saw some special teams reps over the summer.

Thompson went undrafted in 2024, spending some time with the Cleveland Browns. He played college football at Rhode Island, where he was a multi-season starter at left tackle. The 6’7, 295-pound lineman scored an 8.66 RAS ahead of the draft. He’s also appeared at guard for the Browns, although he’s yet to play in a regular season game.

Two things that are fairly consistent with #Browns new UDFA Lorenzo Thompson:

1. How quickly he explodes out of his stance and gets into his pass sets.

2. How incredibly swift and active his feet are. This clip is a great example of it. He's just back there dancing around and… pic.twitter.com/M5cYGu6JJH

Two Steelers earn PFWA honors

gettyimages-2252447631.jpg

For the first time since 2018, no Steelers were named to the Pro Football Writers of America’s All-NFL team as the PFWA announced its all-star teams for the 2025 season.

However, veteran defensive tackle Cam Heyward was named to the PFWA’s All-AFC team, while linebacker Carson Bruener earned the special teamer spot on the All-Rookie team.

Heyward has now made four career PFWA All-AFC teams over his career. In 2025 at 36 years old, he ranked first among defensive tackles in solo tackles and total snaps, per PFF. He also logged 3.5 sacks, nine tackles for loss, and six pass deflections.

Bruener, a seventh-round pick by Pittsburgh in the 2025 NFL Draft, played college football at Washington. He’s also the son of current Steelers scout and former tight end Mark Bruener.

Carson Bruener made an immediate impact for the Steelers in 2025, playing 287 of his 288 total snaps on special teams, where he logged 19 tackles. He was named a PFF second-team All-Pro for his efforts as a special teamer (Heyward was first team).

Bruener isn’t the only Pittsburgh special teamer to earn honors this offseason, with Steelers wide receiver and special teamer Ben Skowronek earning a Pro Bowl this season, the first of his career.

However, Bruener and Skowronek will be without longtime Steelers special teams coordinator Danny Smith in 2026, who left for an opening at the same position with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Tuesday.

Adam Thielen reveals details on Mike Tomlin stepping down

gettyimages-2254976148.jpg

Former Steelers wide receiver Adam Thielen recently provided insight into Mike Tomlin’s final address to the team following the longtime head coach’s resignation. Tomlin, who led Pittsburgh for 19 seasons, announced his decision to step down on January 13, one day after the Steelers suffered their seventh consecutive playoff loss.

Speaking on Barstool Sports’ Pardon My Take podcast, Thielen reflected on the emotional nature of Tomlin’s final meeting with players. According to Thielen, the resignation came as a shock to much of the locker room, with many players caught off guard by the announcement. He echoed sentiments shared by others around the organization, describing the moment as both surprising and deeply emotional, given Tomlin’s long-standing presence and influence.

How the final team meeting in Pittsburgh went down pic.twitter.com/AecPCjgrvc

— Pardon My Take (@PardonMyTake) January 21, 2026

“It was kind of like his normal, like after-game meeting, whether you win or lose,” Thielen said. “He was talking about his appreciation for the effort and things like that. ”And the last thing was like, by the way, I’m going to step down…I think it was most emotional because the way he said it was like he wasn’t good enough. And that’s when it gets emotional because I’m like no, no no, I didn’t do a good enough job. Whether you were a coach or a player you were probably like man, if I would have done a better job, this probably wouldn’t have been happening.”

Thielen’s comments came shortly after he officially announced his retirement following a 13-season NFL career. The veteran wide receiver joined the Steelers late in the season after being claimed off waivers in early December, seeking an opportunity to compete in the postseason. While Pittsburgh’s playoff run was brief, Thielen noted that the chance to play meaningful football late in the year factored into his decision to continue his career one final time.

As for Tomlin, he has yet to speak publicly since his resignation. While no formal plans have been announced, league observers widely believe he will take at least one season away from coaching. Tomlin departs as one of the most respected head coaches in NFL history, leaving behind a legacy that continues to resonate with former and current players alike.

Brian Flores signs extension with Vikings, ‘still a candidate’ for Steelers, Ravens

gettyimages-2253325280.jpg

Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores signed a contract extension with Minnesota, the team announced Wednesday. However, NFL insider Tom Pelissero reported that the coach remains a candidate in the Steelers and Ravens’ head coaching searches.

The Vikings have signed defensive coordinator Brian Flores to a new contract, sources tell me and @RapSheet.

Flores is still a candidate with the Steelers and Ravens head coaching jobs. But if he doesn’t land one of those, he’ll stay in Minnesota. pic.twitter.com/RAPKF9kZkR

— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) January 22, 2026

Flores’ previous contract had expired with the Vikings, and his new one is contingent on him not accepting a head coaching job elsewhere.

Flores had an in-person interview with the Steelers on Tuesday; he interviewed with Baltimore Jan. 13.

The Vikings extending Flores can be read a few ways: Minnesota doing everything it can to retain one of the best defensive coordinators in the league, Flores gaining some leverage and ensuring he has a backup plan if he doesn’t land a head coaching job, or writing on the wall that Baltimore and Pittsburgh are likely to hire someone else in their coaching searches.

In 2025, Flores’ Vikings defense finished seventh-best in EPA per play and points per game, second in yards per game allowed, and 21st in rush yards per game.

Both Flores and Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver have earned second interviews with the Steelers. Former Cowboys and Packers head coach Mike McCarthy had an in-person interview with the team on Wednesday.

The Rams’ Chris Shula and Nate Scheelhaase, also candidates in the Steelers’ head coaching search, have interviewed virtually with the team but cannot do so in person until after the NFC Championship game.

Like Mike? The case against the Steelers hiring Mike McCarthy for head coach

gettyimages-2236466643.jpg

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ season came to an end nine days ago, but they have remained in the headlines thanks to their ongoing search for just their fourth coach since the start of the Super Bowl era. The process of finding an organization’s next head coach is not a particularly fast one. When the Steelers last found themselves in this position, 17 days passed between the announcement of Bill Cowher’s retirement and Mike Tomlin’s hiring. We’re currently on Day 8 of the Steelers’ search in 2026; things are just getting started.

So much about how we follow our team has changed since 2007. While social media and the “NFL Insiders” existed back then, they had not yet proliferated to the extent they have now. Information — and in some cases disinformation — travels at a much faster rate these days, and we are constantly being inundated with updates, betting lines, and hot takes about every last speck of minutiae a coaching search entails.

If you’ve been following this offseason soap opera closely, you’re likely aware that the past few days have seen a growing drumbeat regarding the prospects of Pittsburgh native Mike McCarthy becoming the next coach of the Steelers. That’s a notion that appears to be wildly unpopular across Steeler Nation, and I include myself among those who would be disappointed by that hire. Still, I’ve seen enough distress and grumbling in this website’s comment sections that I think a short discussion about McCarthy’s candidacy is in order.

How serious is the Steelers’ interest in McCarthy?

gettyimages-2190117672.jpg

At this point, we know that the Steelers have scheduled McCarthy for an in-person interview on Wednesday. If it weren’t for the recent media blitz, this news alone wouldn’t be all that spectacular. Casting a wide net for a search like this is just good practice, and talking to a variety of coaches isn’t that dissimilar to how teams talk to a wide array of incoming rookies, both formally and informally, during the course of a draft cycle.

Digging up a full list of coaches who interviewed with the Steelers in 2007 is a challenging endeavor nearly two decades later, but according to this ESPN article from the time, Ron Rivera and Chan Gailey were coaches who received an initial interview, but not a second.

Fans worried about a potential McCarthy hire should also remember that the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review had opined that the Steelers’ offensive coordinator, Ken Whisenhunt, was the frontrunner — until he wasn’t — and later incorrectly reported that Russ Grimm had been hired for the role. It’s important for us to recognize that these situations are fluid and that an insider/reporter’s information is only as good as their source. Grimm told media members the Steelers had offered him the job, while the organization has maintained Grimm mistook an outlining of possible contract numbers for a formal offer that hadn’t actually been given.

Still, it would be dishonest to ignore that McCarthy does have more of a connection to the team than merely being a native Yinzer. In fact, he’s had a previous professional relationship with at least two key decision makers in the organization.

Just a couple young guys from the 2000 New Orleans Saints media guide: Mike McCarthy, Omar Khan and Andy Weidl. pic.twitter.com/fJDk3GD1c0

— Mike DeFabo (@MikeDeFabo) January 20, 2026

Generally speaking, so much of life is influenced by who you know. If McCarthy truly is a “strong candidate,” this is the most compelling explanation for why. The decision will ultimately fall on Art Rooney II’s shoulders, but if Khan and Weidl are vouching for McCarthy, that’s certain to carry sway in his decision.

If this revelation has raised your blood pressure, my sincere apologies, but I wouldn’t blow a gasket just yet. While it’s true that McCarthy, Khan, and Weidl were once working for the same organization, their roles were so different that it’s unclear just how familiar they are with one another. Not to mention, Weidl is scheduling interviews of his own as he vies to make the leap to NFL GM.

A McCarthy hire would also buck several precedents for the Steelers. For starters, all three of the Steelers’ head coaches — and many of the candidates this go round — have come from defensive backgrounds. McCarthy does not. Chuck Noll was 37 when he was hired, with no previous head coaching experience. Bill Cowher was 34, with no prior head coaching experience. Mike Tomlin was 34 years old and, that’s right, had not previously been a head coach. McCarthy? He’s 62 — nine years older than Tomlin is now — and has been the top coach for two franchises previously.

It’d also be surprising if the Steelers weren’t aware that no man has ever hoisted the Lombardi Trophy as head coach for two franchises. In fact, just seven men have led two franchises to an appearance in the Super Bowl:

  • Don Shula (Colts, Dolphins)
  • Bill Parcells (Giants, Patriots)
  • Dan Reeves (Broncos, Falcons)
  • Dick Vermeil (Eagles, Rams)
  • Mike Holmgren (Packers, Seahawks)
  • John Fox (Panthers, Broncos)
  • Andy Reid (Eagles, Chiefs)

It would also be relatively unusual in the modern era for someone to get a third head coaching gig. A look at the all-time list of coaches who have coached three or more teams — excluding interim appointments — paints another clear picture of how rare that is.

  • Pete Carroll, 4 – Patriots, Jets, Seahawks, Raiders (2025 last year as HC)
  • Bill Parcells, 4 – Giants, Patriots, Jets, Cowboys (2006 last year as HC)
  • Marty Schottenheimer, 4 – Browns, Chiefs, Washington, Chargers (2006 last year as HC)
  • Lovie Smith, 3 – Bears, Buccaneers, Texans (2022 last year as HC)
  • John Fox, 3 – Panthers, Broncos, Bears (2017 last year as HC)
  • Mike Mularkey, 3 – Bills, Jaguars, Titans (2017 last year as HC)
  • Mike Shanahan, 3 – Broncos, Raiders, Washington (2013 last year as HC)
  • Norv Turner, 3 – Washington, Raiders, Chargers (2012 last year as HC)
  • Wade Phillips, 3 – Bills, Cowboys, Broncos (2010 last year as HC)
  • Dick Vermeil, 3 – Eagles, Rams, Chiefs (2005 last year as HC)
  • Dan Reeves, 3 – Broncos, Giants, Falcons (2003 last year as HC)
  • Chuck Knox, 3 – Bills, Rams, Seahawks, Rams again (1994 last year as HC)
  • Jack Pardee, 3 – Bears, Washington, Oilers (1994 last year as HC)
  • Forrest Gregg, 3 – Browns, Bengals, Packers (1987 last year as HC)

Just 14 men have accomplished the feat, and many of them have a reputation for not being able to win the big one. Only four of these men have won a Super Bowl: Carroll, Parcells, Shanahan, and Vermeil. Of those men, only Parcells (2) and Shanahan (2) have won more than one Super Bowl, and both did so with the first team they coached.

By hiring McCarthy, the Steelers would not only be subverting their own previous standards, but they’d be hoping to accomplish something that’s never been done in NFL history. I don’t know about you, but I don’t think the Steelers are oblivious to this fact, and I’m having a hard time buying that the Steelers view McCarthy as a source of fresh ideas. Only Reid would be older than him among the NFL’s head coaching ranks.

I think it’s also important to consider where all this McCarthy buzz is coming from. I might not have the ear of any NFL bigwigs, but I do have a degree and career in journalism. Media literacy is something I tend to think I’m fairly well-versed in, and to be honest, I don’t think fans even require the same level of training I’ve had to decipher when some behind-the-scenes politicking is at play.

Tom Pelissero is an insider employed by the NFL. His reporting appears on the league’s television network and website. By all accounts, he is good at his job, and he’s someone who I believe to be a trustworthy source of information when he’s reporting breaking news. However, I’ll point out that there is a difference between live breaking news — things like a trade, signing, release/firing, or a serious medical update on a player — and the NFL rumor mill. And fans should be able to spot the difference rather easily.

Do I think there is a place for rumor mill reporting? Of course! Speculation about deals being made behind closed doors is part of the mystique of the NFL. This type of content isn’t every fan’s cup of tea, and that’s ok, there’s more than one way to be a fan. But there’s no denying that the NFL’s mastery of producing this type of content is a big reason the league has boomed in popularity and wealth, staying in the news cycle even during the months when no games are played. And it makes sense, right? People naturally seek out narratives, whether it’s the lore behind why two coaches don’t like each other, or even something simple like cheering for the undrafted player who managed to become a star for the home team against all odds.

All that is to say, insiders have to get their information from somewhere. To have the access necessary to break news, an insider has to have built relationships around the league. That usually means agents or the NFL executives themselves. When you see a person in the media sharing this type of palace intrigue, it’s helpful to ask yourself what the slant of the reporting is and who might want that information out.

Here is a timeline of some of Pelissero’s past tweets regarding McCarthy, linked below. There were more, including a breakdown of COVID statuses and other bits of Cowboys and McCarthy minutiae, but I’ve pared it down to the most relevant tweets for our conversation. I’ll let you decide if there are any patterns you notice:

  • Dec. 25, 2016 — Pelissero praises McCarthy and Tomlin for getting their teams to the playoffs after facing scrutiny in November. “Good coaches/programs aren’t suddenly terrible.”
  • Dec. 2, 2018 — After tweeting out a statement from the Packers about McCarthy’s firing, Pelissero follows up with a tweet highlighting McCarthy’s 125-77-2 record, nine playoff appearances, 10-8 postseason record, and Super Bowl win. “No doubt he’ll have interest for job openings in this cycle.”
  • Jan. 1, 2019 — Shares that McCarthy declined the Cardinals. Notes that the Jets and Sam Darnold are an intriguing match. “Just looking for the right opportunity.”
  • Jan. 9, 2019 — McCarthy does not get the Jets job. Pelissero tweets out an anecdote about McCarthy’s kids cheering at the dinner table when they found out he’d be home for the 2019 season. Notes he’ll be ready for the 2020 season.
  • Dec. 9, 2019 — Pelissero does a nearly five-minute feature for NFL Network on McCarthy and what returning to an NFL sideline in 2020 would mean to him.
  • Jan. 4, 2020 — Pelissero, responding to reports that McCarthy will interview with the Cowboys, says that Dallas is looking for someone with head coaching experience, and notes that McCarthy is in the running for four jobs.
  • Jan. 6, 2020 — “Mike McCarthy tells me he just signed with the #Cowboys. Done deal. He’s their new head coach.”
  • Nov. 23, 2020 — Pelissero does a TV spot for NFL Network where he shares an anecdote about McCarthy smashing watermelons with a sledgehammer during a team meeting to motivate his struggling team the night before a game.
  • Nov. 15, 2021 — Another TV spot for Pelissero. Coming off an ugly loss, McCarthy once again tries some cooky motivational ploy. This time with a bit involving something called “Monkey Butt.”
  • Jan. 15, 2024 —After another disappointing Cowboys playoff performance, Pelissero retweets a report that players haven’t quit on McCarthy. Adds: “Player offering strong support for Mike McCarthy”
  • Jan. 17, 2024 — Pelissero shares that Jerry Jones wasn’t going to judge his head coach off the final game. Highlights that the Cowboys were 12-5 and had the No. 1 scoring offense with McCarthy calling plays. “A brutal ending, no doubt, but high expectations for 2024.”
  • Jan. 13, 2025 — Breaks the news that McCarthy and the Cowboys couldn’t reach an agreement on the length of the contract for an extension before his contract expired. “McCarthy will pursue other opportunities. He leaves Dallas with a winning record and three playoff appearances.”
  • Jan. 14, 2025, 9:33 a.m. — Announces interview with Chicago. Notes that McCarthy has beaten the Bears 19 times, more than any other NFL team he’s faced.
  • Jan. 14, 2025, 10:18 a.m. — Notes that the interview will be held at Halas Hall. “An important day in Chicago’s search.”
  • Jan. 28, 2025 — With McCarthy not receiving any offers, Pelissero shares that McCarthy has “decided to focus on the 2026 hiring cycle.” He also notes McCarthy has made the playoffs in 12 of 18 seasons. “Expected to be a strong candidate a year from now.”
  • Jan. 2, 2026 — In a tweet about the Titans’ coaching search, McCarthy is the first name listed among possible candidates.
  • Jan. 7, 2026 — Announces McCarthy will interview for the Giants job. Highlights McCarthy’s winning percentage, 12 playoff appearances in 18 seasons, and his QB development background. “A logical fit with Jaxson Dart.”
  • Jan. 18, 2026 — Says the Steelers have scheduled an interview with “Super Bowl-winning coach Mike McCarthy.” Highlights his Pittsburgh roots, win percentage, the 12-of-18 stat again, and that he would be “the first offensive-minded Steelers HC in the modern era.”
  • Jan. 18, 2026 — Pelissero retweets the previous tweet with a clearly AI-slop-generated picture of someone in Steelers gear who vaguely looks like McCarthy holding a beer in a Steelers bar, with a cigarette butt hovering where his ear would be if it weren’t covered by a beanie. Pelissero captions this with an anecdote about how McCarthy’s father was a firefighter, cop, and bar owner in Pittsburgh. “Now, a true Yinzer could come home to pursue the franchise’s next Lombardi.”
  • Jan. 20, 2026 — Once again referring to him as “Super Bowl-winning coach Mike McCarthy,” Pelissero shares that McCarthy will interview on Wednesday with the Steelers. Notes that McCarthy has withdrawn from the Titans search — I mean, Robert Saleh was hired lol — and that McCarthy has “turned down other inquiries. He’s focused on Pittsburgh, where he’s considered a strong candidate.”
  • Jan. 20, 2026 — Retweeting the previous tweet, Pelissero highlights that the only active coaches with more than McCarthy’s 11 playoff wins are Andy Reid and John Harbaugh.

Congratulations! If you made it through that whole list, you just consumed a multi-year media campaign for Mike McCarthy. I point all this out not to dog on Pelissero, as I said before, there’s room for this kind of reporting. That said, when you lay it all out like this, it becomes pretty apparent that McCarthy and/or his representation are sources for him.

This doesn’t tell us one way or another how Rooney feels about McCarthy, but it does demonstrate that McCarthy has often used the media to present himself as a desired candidate.

As for why I don’t think McCarthy makes much sense for Pittsburgh, look no further than his most recent playoff trips with a talented Cowboys roster.

McCarty made the playoffs 3 times in 5 yrs

2021, that 1st in PPG and 5th in EPA team?
– 17 pts @ home vs SF in the WC round and bounced

2022
– 31 pts @ TB in the WC
– 12 pts @ SF

2023, 1st in PPG & 2nd in EPA/Play
– 32 pts in garbage time of blowout loss hosting GB in WC

— Ryan Parish (@RyanParishmedia) January 20, 2026
6. Consistent coach with double-digit wins in 11 of 18 years

Sure, but how do they square his history against moving on from Tomlin, who was also wildly consistent in the regular season

MM playoffs: 12/18 yrs, 11-11 record, 10/12 yrs had 1 or fewer wins, 5/12 yrs one-and-done

— Ryan Parish (@RyanParishmedia) January 20, 2026

Looking at those results, it’s hard not to view a potential McCarthy hire as replacing Tomlin with a similar, and older, version of Tomlin. Both have astounding regular-season records and several playoff appearances. However, both have a lackluster track record in the playoffs after winning the Super Bowl. McCarthy has gone 6-9 in the playoffs since winning it all. After starting his career 3-1 in the playoffs, Tomlin had one more conference championship in him, but went 5-11 during the rest of his Pittsburgh tenure. Tomlin at least has the excuse of not having a good quarterback in the years since Ben Roethlisberger’s arm injury. McCarthy’s two quarterbacks have been Aaron Rodgers and Dak Prescott.

What makes Pittsburgh think he could coax a championship out of present-day Rodgers, assuming that is one of the main reasons for hiring him? And frankly, what would be the purpose of running back this Steelers roster? What title window is ownership seeing that the rest of us so clearly don’t envision?

I wouldn’t be against the Steelers bringing McCarthy on to be some kind of offensive analyst. The Steelers have one of the smallest staffs in the NFL, and while I’m not overly optimistic about the prospects of McCarthy as a head coach, I do think he has valuable insights he could provide for an NFL team. Whether or not he’s open to that idea remains to be seen.

So, will McCarthy be the Steelers’ next head coach? I highly doubt it. And if the recent reporting had you worried about it, as I’ve seen some of you express in the comments, I hope I was able to alleviate some of that anxiety for you. And if McCarthy does end up as Pittsburgh’s coach? Get in the comments, and like Akon, you can put the blame on me for misguiding you.

Would you want Mike McCarthy as Pittsburgh’s next head coach? Am I crazy for thinking this is all just a smokescreen? Let us know in the comments. And be sure to bookmark Behind the Steel Curtain for all the latest news, breakdowns, and more!

The Steelers added another name to their offseason roster Thursday, signing defensive end Jahvaree Ritzie per a team announcement.

Ritzie went undrafted in 2025 out of North Carolina. As a Tar Heel, he recorded 40 total tackles and 6.5 sacks in his final collegiate season, along with one incredibly memorable interception:

The 6’4, 294-pound defender ran a five-second 40-yard dash coming out of college, scoring a 9.49 RAS.

Ritzie signed with the New England Patriots following the draft, briefly spending time on the practice squad at the start of the season. Now, he joins the Steelers roster at the start of the team’s 2026 offseason.

Steelers’ Arthur Smith, Teryl Austin drawing coordinator interest

imagn-21499610.jpg

The Steelers are searching for a new head coach, meaning that assistants under former head coach Mike Tomlin have been searching for jobs elsewhere around the league.

Teams have requested interviews with Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith for both head coaching and offensive coordinator jobs this offseason. Smith interviewed with the Tennessee Titans for their head coaching job, which was filled this week by Robert Saleh. However, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported Friday that the team is talking to him about their offensive coordinator job.

The Titans have spoken to Steelers OC Arthur Smith about their offensive coordinator position, per sources.

Smith was previously the offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans from 2019-20.

Smith has reportedly also drawn interest in the Arizona Cardinals’ head coaching search, as well as the Chargers and Lions’ offensive coordinator searches. Only the Arizona job remains unfilled.

Steelers defensive coordinator Teryl Austin has also started to draw interest. On Friday, The Athletic’s Nicki Jhabvala reported that Austin interviewed for the Washington Commanders’ defensive coordinator job.

Steelers sign veteran tight end

gettyimages-2231352037.jpg

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced on Friday that they have signed J.J. Galbreath to a reserve/future contract. The 24-year-old tight end rejoins the Steelers after a stint with the team during training camp and on the practice squad this past season.

We have signed TE J.J. Galbreath to a Reserve/Future contract. @BordasLaw

— Pittsburgh Steelers (@steelers) January 23, 2026

Galbreath originally joined the Steelers as an undrafted free agent out of South Dakota after the 2025 Draft. The six-foot-four pass catcher shone for the Coyotes, amassing 1355 yards and 13 touchdowns during his college career. Galbreath earned first-team AP All-American honors his senior season. However, he was cut during the team’s final roster cuts in August. Galbreath briefly rejoined the team on the practice squad, but was cut after week two and has been a free agent ever since.

He appeared in three preseason games for the Steelers this past season, but only collected three catches for 23 yards during his time on the field. This reserve/future deal will now give Galbreath a better chance to impress the new coaching staff during offseason workouts and in training camp in Latrobe.

With fellow tight end Connor Heyward set to become a free agent, Galbreath will now have another shot to potentially crack the 53-man roster this season for the Steelers.

Steelers hiring Mike McCarthy highlights franchise’s refusal to evolve

gettyimages-2192683892.jpg

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ brief search for a new head coach has come to an end, and it concluded with the most Steelers status-quo hire imaginable.

Rather than wait to bring in Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula or pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase for respective second interviews and potentially hire one of the young up-and-comers, or give the keys to the likes of Brian Flores or Anthony Weaver, the Steelers did the most stuck in the past, scared of change thing they could do and hired former Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy.

For what it’s worth, you can absolutely make the argument that McCarthy is an upgrade over Tomlin. He has 11 10-win seasons in 18 years as a head coach (Tomlin had 12 in 19 seasons). Additionally, he has 11 playoff wins to Tomlin’s eight, including a win over Tomlin in Super Bowl XLV.

The problem isn’t that McCarthy is a bad head coach – he’s not. However, he’s 62 years old and not what the Steelers needed. They needed a reset with a young mind leading them into a new era, which is exactly what they needed when they hired 34-year-old Bill Cowher in 1992 and 24-year-old Mike Tomlin in 2007. They’ve done this before, but for whatever reason, they seemingly forgot.

Could this hire be a net positive? Sure. McCarthy is an offensive-minded coach, which fans have been wanting for quite some time. From 2021-23, the Cowboys’ offense ranked first, 11th, and fifth in total offense. Again, he isn’t a bad coach, but this just feels like going from an Altima to an Accord. And they can push that this has nothing to do with Aaron Rodgers, but it hardly feels like a coincidence that Pittsburgh has made it known they want Rodgers back, and then hire his former head coach shortly after the fact. In a nutshell, this is a short-sighted hire used to bring back a 42-year-old quarterback to play the hits together like it’s 2012. The best version of the McCarthy-Rodgers duo won a single NFC Championship – what do the Steelers think the Paramount Plus reboot version will do?

Pittsburgh had a chance to completely change who they are and get with the times of the modern NFL. That’s what the Baltimore Ravens did. They fired John Harbaugh and hired 42-year-old Jesse Minter, who is one of the game’s brightest defensive minds. With the likes of Shula (39), Scheelhaase (35), Flores (44), and Weaver (45) all younger, fresh faces of whom Pittsburgh could have built their new identity around, they instead have decided to continue riding on horseback when there are cars on the road.

Steelers OC Arthur Smith takes OC job at Big Ten power

gettyimages-2166476262.jpg

On the same day the Pittsburgh Steelers named Greenfield’s own Mike McCarthy as their fourth head coach in 57 years, their offensive coordinator found a new gig. In college.

Longtime NFL coach Arthur Smith is heading to Columbus to be the next offensive coordinator at Ohio State, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

It’s nothing short of a stunning move for the former Falcons head coach to go back to college. Smith interviewed with the LA Chargers for their offensive coordinator position, and the Titans looked into Smith for their openings.

The Chargers landed former Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel and the Titans hired Robert Saleh as head coach, but were reportedly interested in bringing Smith back as their OC.

Smith was the offensive coordinator in Tennessee from 2019-20 before being named the Falcons head coach in 2021.

North Carolina was interested in hiring Smith as its head coach before hiring Bill Belichick.

He spent two seasons in Pittsburgh on Mike Tomlin’s staff. The Steelers offense ranked 25th in total yards (316.9), 26th in rushing (103.3), and 15th in both points (23.4) and third-down percentage (40%).

Ohio State offensive coordinator Brian Hartline left the Buckeyes to become the head coach at USF.

Smith will coach one of the most talented offenses in college football, led by Heisman finalist quarterback Julian Sayin and star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith.

The Steelers will have a new head coach, offensive coordinator, and defensive coordinator in the same season for the first time this century.

Art Rooney II responds to criticism from Mike McCarthy hire

gettyimages-2190092510.jpg

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a new head coach: former Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy.

That decision has been met with heavy criticism from both the fan base and media alike over the last 24 hours. In his first public statements on the matter, team President Art Rooney II said he isn’t worried about the immediate reactions.

“We’re really not worried about winning the initial press conference,” Rooney said via Bob Labriola. “It’s about picking the coach we believe will help us win games, and social media really doesn’t enter into it. And none of that will matter once we’re starting to play games. The message for our fans is we’re very excited. We think we have a coach who is well-equipped to lead us into the next winning phase of Steelers football, and that’s what it’s all about. I think they’re going to love Coach Mike.”

McCarthy has 11-10 win seasons to his name, as well as a playoff record of 11-11. He led the Packers to a Super Bowl win over the Steelers in Super Bowl XLV.

Steelers fans react to Mike McCarthy hiring

gettyimages-2236466643.jpg

Mike McCarthy is the fourth Steelers head coach in 57 years.

The Steelers announced on Saturday that the organization has agreed to a verbal agreement with the former Packers and Cowboys coach to guide the franchise moving forward.

Steelers reporter Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that the deal is for five years.

The news was met with mixed reviews on social media, but primarily with negative feedback from Steelers fans.

McCarthy, 62, defeated the Steelers in Super Bowl XLV in Dallas and took 2025 off. He coached Green Bay from 2006-2018 before joining Dallas from 2020-2024.

Many Steelers fans preferred a younger offensive or defensive mind. It’s confusing why the Steelers didn’t wait to interview Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula or pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase after the NFC Championship Game.

The Steelers got their guy, and it’s none other than the guy who grew up down the road in Greenfield staying home.

I absolutely stand by Tomlin having to be let go. But I had no idea that this franchise was so damn clueless. Shula was right there. Other young coaches that have proved themselves ready right there and they hire Mike McCarthy…. #Steelers

Scratch that, I’m seeing no positive things about picking Mike McCarthy from anyone #Steelers

Usually I try and give the benefit of the doubt to the storied franchise that has an entire staff team to help make decisions.

The Packers and Cowboys offense both improved in EPA/play the year after McCarthy left. This might be the worst move they’ve ever made.#Steelers

— Arjun (@JunyJunebug) January 25, 2026
One thing to keep in mind on the hiring of McCarthy. There was no rush to do it. However, doing it now does help with having more options to find the right assistant coaches and that was a major failure under Tomlin. #Steelers #SteelersNation

Unfortunately, Mike McCarthy might not get the welcome he’s hoping for — and it’s no fault of his own.

#Steelers. Is McCarthy the sexy hire? No. He's the necessary hire for where the team is as a core roster and he's different enough. If Sean Peyton can do it, I believe Mccarthy can too. He's O has always graded well, just needs a defense. We have that. Give it a chance.

Steelers reluctance to rebuild played big role in hiring Mike McCarthy

gettyimages-2187868528.jpg

The Pittsburgh Steelers have hired Mike McCarthy as their next head coach, following Mike Tomlin’s 19 seasons at the helm.

Pittsburgh is set to introduce McCarthy in a press conference on Tuesday at 2:00 P.M. EST. Before that, though, ESPN’s Adam Schefter has revealed whom the Steelers passed on in favor of McCarthy.

“The other two finalists were [Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator] Anthony Weaver and [Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores],” Schefter said on The Pat McAfee Show.

Not only did Schefter reveal who the respective runner-ups were, but he also added that team President Art Rooney II’s reluctance to rebuild played a big role in hiring McCarthy.

[Rooney] talked about the fact that he didn’t want to rebuild,“ Schefter said. ”And they’ve got a veteran team. And this is a team that won the division this past year. They won the division. They’re not ready to shut it down and rebuild. And so they felt that Mike McCarthy, who’s got the experience he does [and] who’s familiar with grooming quarterbacks could be helpful – either growing Mason Rudolph and Will Howard, or whoever they draft, or potentially, even, helping to lure back Aaron Rodgers.“

Considering Schefter pointed out Rooney’s desire to more or less stay the course rather than start over, it’s fair to wonder if Flores and/or Weaver laid out a plan of rebuilding that didn’t align with Rooney’s vision for the team, which led to McCarthy getting the job.

New Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy enticed by ‘upside’ of Will Howard

gettyimages-2252445868.jpg

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ head coaching search ended with the hiring of Pittsburgh native Mike McCarthy. McCarthy found success with both the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys, respectively, and sat out the 2025 season after his contract with the Cowboys expired following the 2024 campaign.

There are many aspects of the roster that the Steelers will need to figure out this offseason – none bigger than the quarterback position. Aaron Rodgers may retire, and even if he does want to keep playing, there is no guarantee it would be with the Steelers. Mason Rudolph and Will Howard are the other two quarterbacks on the roster.

Many seem enticed by Howard. The sixth-round pick didn’t see any in-game action last summer during the preseason due to a hand injury he suffered in training camp. However, according to team President Art Rooney II, McCarthy likes what the Steelers have in Howard.

“He likes Will Howard,” Rooney said via Bob Labriola. “[He] thinks Will has tremendous upside and is looking forward to working with him. Obviously feels like Mason can be a contributor. We’ll have to sit down and discuss where Aaron is, if he decides to come back, and whether that all makes sense. I think Mike was very comfortable with the quarterback room and the possibilities with the quarterback room.”

The 2026 league year begins on March 11, which is when the Steelers will be able to officially begin signing free agents and making trades. Perhaps a veteran will be acquired at the position to lead the team into the 2026 season. The Steelers could also make a move for a younger quarterback to have a competition during training camp.

Interesting offseason shaping up in Pittsburgh. The McCarthy hire is definitely polarizing - I get why fans wanted someone younger and more innovative, but I also understand the logic of going with experience when you've got a roster that just won the division.

The Arthur Smith to Ohio State move caught me off guard though. Didn't see that coming at all. Going from NFL OC to college seems like an unusual career path, but coaching Julian Sayin and Jeremiah Smith is a pretty attractive opportunity. Can't blame him for taking it.

What concerns me more is the complete staff turnover. New HC, new OC, new DC all in one year is a lot of change for a team that's trying to compete immediately. That's going to be a significant adjustment period for the players.

The quarterback situation is the real wildcard here. McCarthy's track record with QBs is solid - Rodgers obviously, and even Dak had some productive years. But relying on Will Howard's "upside" feels risky if you're truly in win-now mode like Rooney claims. Howard barely got any reps last year with that hand injury.

I think the fanbase frustration is understandable. The Steelers seem stuck in this middle ground where they won't commit to a full rebuild but also aren't making the aggressive moves needed to seriously contend. McCarthy feels like a safe choice to keep them competitive but maybe not a championship-level move.

Guess we'll see how the offseason plays out. The QB decision will tell us a lot about what direction this team is actually heading.

Former Steelers defensive back being interviewed for defensive coordinator

gettyimages-1125301282.jpg

Mike McCarthy is getting to work putting together his first staff as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Steelers are set to interview Commanders defensive pass game coordinator Jason Simmons for their defensive coordinator position, according to Mark Kaboly of The Pat McAfee Show.

Simmons has been the defensive pass game coordinator in Washington, D.C. for the past two seasons after two years as a defensive backs/pass game coordinator with the Raiders. The Commanders ranked last in total defense (398.9 yards), 28th in passing yards per game (242.5), and 27th in points (26.5) this season.

Simmons, 49, spent eight seasons in Green Bay with Mike McCarthy from 2011-2018. He spent time as a coaching administrator (2011-2014), assistant special teams coach (2015-17), and secondary coach (2018). He served as the defensive backs coach in 2019, the year after McCarthy was fired, and served on Matt LeFleur’s first coaching staff.

A former defensive back in the NFL for 10 years, the Steelers drafted Simmons in the fifth round of the 1998 NFL Draft. He played 49 games with the Steelers in a reserve role from 1998-2001 before playing his final six seasons in Houston.

Simmons finished his NFL career with 241 tackles, two interceptions, seven forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries in 121 games (12 starts).

2026 Senior Bowl Day 1 Notebook

20260127_155833.jpg

It was a was cold, but beautiful day in Mobile, Alabama, an excellent start to the 2026 Senior Bowl. After a harrowing day of travel thanks to Winter Storm Fern messing up flights and causing both of us to have to rebook and adjust on the fly, we were glad to put those headaches behind us and watch some young men in pads have the biggest job interview of their lives.

Here’s what we saw on the ground at Day 1 of the Senior Bowl.

Less Steelers representation than normal

JB: Steelers general manager Omar Khan is usually a mainstay in Mobile during Senior Bowl week, but missed practice today to help introduce his new head coach Mike McCarthy to the media for the first time. Whether or not Khan, Weidl, and McCarthy show up to Mobile at all this week is still up in the air, but given Pittsburgh’s history of taking players who participate at the Senior Bowl I would be shocked to see no major Steelers brass show up.

RP: Though he is no longer part of the team, we did see former Steelers defensive line coach Karl Dunbar working with the defensive line group in his Steelers hoodie. Dunbar was with the Steelers for eight seasons, and we hope he gets another opportunity in the league.

The Quarterbacks underwhelm

JB: It doesn’t look like a good year to need a quarterback, and unfortunately for the Steelers, it seems like that may just be what they need the most. If you were hoping for someone to step up and separate themselves from the rest of the pack in Mobile that certainly did not happen on day one of practice. North Dakota State quarterback Cole Payton made arguably the best throw of the day, turning his hips to make a left-handed throw rolling to his right on a ball that traveled 50 yards in the air.

NDSU QB Cole Payton just hit a beautiful downfield shot throwing across his body. Catch by Caleb Douglas. Best play of the day by far.

— joey (@steelersbyjoey) January 27, 2026

RP: I second Joey’s note about the passers. It isn’t a particularly strong class at the position, and that really shows at the Senior Bowl.

LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier is the biggest name here, but after shutting down his season early due to injury, it was clear he was still shaking off some rust today.

— Ryan Parish (@RyanParishmedia) January 28, 2026

Vanderbilt’s Diego Pavia had arguably the best command of the huddle on the field today, but that’s probably his strongest trait. Measuring in at 5’9, Pavia’s stature is going to be hard for scouts to get over. He was easily the smallest guy on the field today, and he threw every ball on a line. At one point, a coach on the field yelled out “That’s a TV timeout,” after a Pavia pass led a receiver into heavy traffic, implying that the receiver would have been getting treated by the medical staff had this been an actual game. Pavia also had some hiccups on reps under center.

Poor exchange with Pavia under center pic.twitter.com/2p2yVySDDn

— Ryan Parish (@RyanParishmedia) January 27, 2026

Baylor’s Sawyer Robertson and Arkansas’ Taylen Green have all the physical tools, but consistency is still their bugaboo. Throwing against air, the ball pops out of Green’s hand in a way that is noticeably different from the rest of the group, with Robertson not far behind. Still, Green holds onto the ball too long for my like, and Robertson short-armed and dirted several passes.

Illinois’ Luke Altmyer got a lot of run today during drills for the National team, but to my eye he looks frantic out there and just seems to be constantly pressing. The same could be said for North Dakota State’s Cole Payton. Payton did have the impressive throw we highlighted above, but on the whole his throws seemed to lack NFL juice.

Pitt LB Kyle Louis showed coverage skills

JB: Louis measured in at 5’11 and 224 pounds, with a thin build for a linebacker. I think it would be plausible for Louis to potentially be used as a box safety in the NFL given his phenomenal coverage skills. Today in practice he lined up at linebacker just like he did at Pitt and was all over the place. He made perhaps the most impressive defensive play of the day when he jumped a route intended for Penn State running back Nick Singleton. Given the lack of depth at both linebacker and safety for the Steelers, he is a name to monitor especially given the Steelers history of taking a liking to guys they are familiar with.

Pitt LB Kyle Louis called ball pic.twitter.com/TF46Q3TSQV

— Ryan Parish (@RyanParishmedia) January 27, 2026

RP: Louis also had a good rep against the other Penn State running back, Kaytron Allen, during a Backs-on-Backers drill, delivering one of the rare collisions that rang out through the stadium on a day where the drills were intentionally not heavy on contact. Later, Louis was seemingly beat on a fade route by Clemson’s Adam Randall, but the Pittsburgh linebacker displayed some impressive recovery speed and got his arms up at just the right moment to break up the pass. Louis’ smaller size showed up a bit at times when taking on blocks in one-on-one drills, but he also was able to knife into the backfield on run plays during 11-on-11s. Overall a solid day.

PITT LB Kyle Louis on his coverage abilities: "I stand on that andvI have real pride in that." #SeniorBowl pic.twitter.com/wDnhhi7PZO

— Ryan Parish (@RyanParishmedia) January 28, 2026

The Linebackers might be the deepest position in the draft

JB: Not only was Kyle Louis a standout today, guys like Jacob Rodriguez justified why he received legitimate Heisman Trophy consideration. Nobody seemed like they could block Rodriguez today. Arizona State’s Keyshaun Elliott was another guy who made his presence felt with several PBU’s during practice. There seems to be a good set of backers with good coverage skills in Mobile, something the Steelers could desperately use.

Jacob Rodriguez… good player https://t.co/iQbdiZEBVU pic.twitter.com/CXGrdAVUxv

— Ryan Parish (@RyanParishmedia) January 27, 2026

RP: Beyond Rodriguez and Louis, I thought Oregon’s Bryce Boettcher and Arizona State’s Keyshaun Elliott had solid days too. They didn’t pop athletically in quite the same way as Rodriguez and Louis, but both were constantly around the ball and performed well in coverage drills.

Someone who was always around the ball in the American Team practice today was Arizona St LB Keyshaun Elliott. Good break on the drag route here #SeniorBowl pic.twitter.com/LfcC6uK3Je

— Ryan Parish (@RyanParishmedia) January 28, 2026

Bits and bobs:

JB: The big receivers had good days. USC’s Ja’Kobi Lane looked like a much more fluid route runner than I remember seeing this past season. Georgia State’s Ted Hurst had the catch of the day, mossing a defender in the endzone after being blanketed for his entire route.

Nice snag here by USC wideout Ja'Kobi Lane on a ball that was behind him #SeniorBowl pic.twitter.com/SlYlWkRFtC

— Ryan Parish (@RyanParishmedia) January 28, 2026
Would you believe Georgia State's Ted Hurst came down with this ball? Because he did (I've seen an angle of the catch on here, I'll share in the comments) #SeniorBowl pic.twitter.com/xPXnV4HRRS

— Ryan Parish (@RyanParishmedia) January 28, 2026
https://t.co/2XW5sKE9nN

— Ryan Parish (@RyanParishmedia) January 28, 2026

RP: I think the running back class might be stronger than initial reactions to this class might have you believe. Arkansas’ Mike Washington Jr. is a player that has intrigued me with his size, burst, fluid movement, and soft hands as a pass catcher.

Arkansas RB Mike Washington Jr was a guy I was looking forward to seeing up close this week. Fluid mover for a guy listed as 230. Not shown in this clip, but he has some of the best hands in the RB group #SeniorBowl pic.twitter.com/pz6j8sCNxe

— Ryan Parish (@RyanParishmedia) January 28, 2026

Kaytron Allen continues to impress me more than his highly touted teammate Nick Singleton. I’ll be keeping an eye on Virginia’s J’Mari Taylor, Indiana’s Kaelon Black, and Oklahoma’s Jadyn Ott as the week goes on.

Virginia's J'Mari Taylor has shown some great hands today too #SeniorBowl pic.twitter.com/noPEjS8r4w

— Ryan Parish (@RyanParishmedia) January 28, 2026

RP: Lastly, we didn’t get a great look at the trenches today as the defensive and offensive lineman were off in their own corner for most of the practices. We’ll effort to get over there in the coming days. The same could be said for the defensive backs, who we only really got to see a bit of during the 11-on-11s. San Diego State cornerback Chris Johnson was noticeably one of the faster players on the field today, and he was clocked at a top speed of 19.78 mph, the top speed recorded in the National team’s practice.

Omar Khan hints at Will Howard getting opportunity with Mike McCarthy

gettyimages-2254976667.jpg

On Tuesday, Omar Khan and fellow Pittsburgh Steelers brass presented Mike McCarthy as the club’s successor to Mike Tomlin via a press conference.

During the 65-year-old’s introduction, the black and gold’s newest bench boss addressed questions regarding his plans for the offense, the whirlwind of the past few days, and how his past will influence the future. With a plethora of NFL experience, including 12 postseason appearances and a Super Bowl ring, Khan and the rest of Pittsburgh’s staff are elated for McCarthy to begin.

More specifically, the Steelers’ general manager is a firm believer in not only McCarthy’s ability to call an offense, but his ability to develop a star quarterback as well.

Steelers potentially turning to next chapter at QB

While the Steelers await a decision from Aaron Rodgers and his future, many fans are beginning to chat about the club’s 2025 draft pick, Will Howard. With an offensive-minded head coach now in charge, Khan too feels the excitement around the 24-year-old quarterback’s potential.

“Omar Khan says in talking to all the coaches in the process, developing and finding the next franchise QB is a big part of it,” Nick Farabaugh reports. “Adds they are excited to work with Will Howard again. McCarthy adds the QB position has evolved with the rules, the QB run game, and much more.’

There is no question that Pittsburgh’s new bench boss knows a thing or two about the evolution of the quarterback. From working with legends like Joe Montana and Aaron Rodgers to a more modern gunslinger like Dak Prescott, McCarthy has seen it all. Now, he will get the chance to take the 6-foot-four Howard under his wing and develop him into the elite versatile QB many believe he can be.

Once again, Rodgers’ decision regarding his status for next season has yet to be announced. However, it is becoming increasingly apparent that the Steelers see Howard as the eventual quarterback of the future in Pittsburgh.

LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier says he ‘would love’ to play for Mike McCarthy and the Steelers

gettyimages-2246727977.jpg

It’s officially draft season, and the sixth consecutive offseason in which the Steelers will be searching for a quarterback. There are plenty of questions as to who new head coach Mike McCarthy will favor in the draft or in free agency, but it is clear that the Steelers and McCarthy value their connections.

The connection to LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier and the Steelers is through his father. Nussmeier’s father Doug, is the current offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints. He served as the Dallas Cowboys’ quarterbacks coach from 2020 to 2022 under McCarthy.

During his media availability, Nussmeier was asked about his connection to McCarthy and whether the opportunity to play in Pittsburgh had crossed his mind.

“I’d love to go play for the Steelers and that would be awesome to play for coach McCarthy,” Nussmeier said.

The quarterback did however, make it clear that although he would love the opportunity to play in Pittsburgh, he doesn’t see the ties between McCarthy and his father as something that could drive Pittsburgh’s decision to draft him.

“There’s no I guess connect ties to that or anything like that,” Nussmeier said. “It would be a great opportunity, you know i’m just looking for anybody that will give me the opportunity to prove that I belong at the next level.”

Former Steelers assistant leaves for AFC foe

The Pittsburgh Steelers are welcoming several new faces to their coaching staff, which you can follow along with in our assistant coach tracker.

With new additions also come departures, and the Steelers have already seen several coaches go elsewhere. Special teams coordinator Danny Smith took the same role with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and offensive coordinator Arthur Smith is the new OC at Ohio State. Defensive line coach Karl Dunbar, defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, running backs coach Eddie Faulkner, and cornerbacks coach Anthony Midget will also be gone.

The newest departure, though, is offensive line coach Pat Meyer, who is taking the same role with the Buffalo Bills. This comes after the Steelers hired James Campen to be their new offensive line coach.

The Bills fired head coach Sean McDermott after nine seasons and promoted offensive coordinator Joe Brady to head coach. Brady and Meyer spent time together with the Carolina Panthers.

Meyer has had several stops across the NFL. He was the Los Angeles Chargers’ offensive line coach and run game coordinator from 2017-19, then went to Carolina to be the Panthers’ offensive line coach from 2020-21 before taking the Steelers’ job in 2022.
