Jaxon Smith-Njigba wins Offensive Player of the Year award

imagn-27490868.jpg

The Seattle Seahawks fielded a surprisingly potent offense during the 2025 season, setting a franchise record for points scored on the season.

Much of the credit for the offense being as prolific as it was goes to third year wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who finished the regular season with a league-leading 1,793 receiving yards as he proved to be completely unguardable for most of the season. JSN’s receiving yardage total this season actually eclipsed his production from the first two years of his career combined, as the 163 passes he hauled in during the 2023 and 2024 seasons yielded the Seahawks a total of 1,758 yards.

That performance earned JSN a nod as a First-team All Pro at wide receiver earlier this month, and now the Pro Football Writers of America have voted him the Offensive Player of the Year.

— Pro Football Writers (@PFWAwriters) January 21, 2026

It’s certainly an award that JSN and Seahawks fans will enjoy, but an even bigger award awaits Sunday when Seattle hosts the Los Angeles Rams at Lumen Field in the NFC Championship Game with a Super Bowl berth on the line.

The Seahawks Syndicate: NFC Championship Game preview and predictions

gettyimages-2252646178.jpg

The Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams are fittingly playing for the NFC Championship Game on Sunday. In a year in which three NFC West teams made the playoffs with 12 wins, it felt inevitable that at least one would make it to Conference Championship weekend, and it’s appropriately the top two teams.

This trilogy figures to be more competitive than the Seahawks’ 41-6 drubbing over the San Francisco 49ers, but I don’t think anyone here would complain if the Seahawks somehow repeated that fear against the Rams, too. There are so many angles and points of analysis for this game, including:

  • How can the Seahawks contain Matthew Stafford and that vaunted passing game?
  • What can be done by Seattle to limit Puka Nacua?
  • Will Sam Darnold have his career-defining moment and lead the Seahawks to a Super Bowl?
  • How will the Seahawks adjust to life without Zach Charbonnet?
  • Left tackle injuries: Any cause for concern for the Seahawks?
  • Who will be the X-factors on the Seahawks to pull off a Conference Championship victory?

The Seahawks Syndicate podcast, hosted by yours truly, Bryce Coutts (The Hawk’s Eye podcast and Field Gulls staff), Dan Viens (Seahawks Forever podcast and former Field Gulls podcast host), and Brandon Cain (The Hawk’s Nest podcast and this episode’s host) will preview Seahawks vs. Rams and make our predictions. You can watch the live stream at 6 pm PT and we’ll probably go about two hours, but if you can’t catch us live then just watch the replay afterward without issue. There will also be a roundtable on the Seahawks’ AP NFL Honors awards nominations, along with John Schneider winning Executive of the Year.

We’ll also talk about the Senior Bowl, which is next week during the bye between Conference Championship and the Super Bowl. Bryce, Dan, and Brandon will all be live in Mobile providing coverage for their respective channels, and we’ll also have some on-site Senior Bowl stuff through Bryce for Field Gulls.

Rashid Shaheed declared one of 4 Seahawks captains for NFC Championship vs. LA Rams

gettyimages-2252660912.jpg

In the run-up to a highly anticipated and historic NFC Championship game against the division rival Los Angeles Rams, the Seattle Seahawks have named their game captains. One of them was an early hero in last week’s Divisional Round of the playoffs.

The men that will lead the ‘Hawks in such a pivotal showdown are A.J. Barner (TE), Ernest Jones IV (ILB), Jarran Reed (DT) and Rashid Shaheed (WR/KR).

Our NFC Championship captains.

Read more » https://t.co/KuyfzKOY0M pic.twitter.com/uCLQCOKGgC

— xz* – Seattle Seahawks (@Seahawks) January 23, 2026

A.J. Barner has emerged this year, finishing third on the team (behind Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Cooper Kupp) in receiving yardage and second to only JSN in receiving touchdowns. He is also the key cog in Seattle’s successful “Barn-Yard” tush push. This will be Barner’s 5th time as a game captain in the 2025 season.

Ernest Jones IV is an emotional leader in the middle of the defense, leading the team with 126 total tackles and 5 interceptions during this year’s campaign. This will also be his 5th instance as a captain this year, including both regular season games against his former employers in the Rams.

Ernest Jones IV is the only linebacker with 125+ tackles and 5+ interceptions in a season in the last decade.@Seahawks | #Seahawks

— NFL Researcher (@NFL_Researcher) January 16, 2026

Jarran Reed, who regularly gives passionate pregame speeches, will serve as captain for the 3rd time this year. Reed missed four games while on IR this year and has played in a rotation with two other excellent DT’s (Leo Williams and Byron Murphy). Despite this, he has 2.5 sacks and is ranked 50th out of 134 DL by PFF.

Rashid Shaheed, of course, took the opening kickoff of the game to the crib for 6 points to give Seattle the literal earliest advantage possible. will hold it down for the special teams unit, doubling as a dynamic weapon in space when featured on offense.

The man known as “Shid” by some of his teammates may even get the Devin Hester treatment (teams preferring to kick out of bounds rather than allow him chances to explode) as a return man. Los Angeles Rams personnel will surely wince at the memory of his 58-yard punt return that sparked an epic 30-14 4th quarter comeback. This is his first time serving as a game captain for the Seahawks.

These men will look to rally the Seahawks to a win that will award Seattle with its 4th Super Bowl berth this century. All eyes in the NFL turn towards Seattle this Sunday early evening.

Seahawks NFC Championship Game game statuses: Charles Cross set to play

gettyimages-2237794334.jpg

The Seattle Seahawks have announced their final injury report for the NFC Championship game against the Los Angeles Rams. Most notable is that starting left tackle, Charles Cross has received no game status and is therefore good to go.

The larger question will be who will back Cross up at left tackle. The second strong left tackle, Josh Jones is listed as questionable with knee and ankle injuries, while third string left tackle, Amari Kight is listed as doubtful with a knee injury. Other backup options for the Seahawks could include rookie offensive tackle, Mason Richman. Logan Brown is another option from the practice squad if Seattle chooses to elevate him to the roster.

In non-left tackle injury news, fullback Robbie Ouzts is listed as questionable with a neck injury, while linebacker Chazz Surratt is out and is otherwise still on injured reserve. Surratt being out is not surprising as he would need to be added to the 53-man roster to play. Ouzts on the other hand could be a blow to the Seahawks running game if he is unable to make it. Brady Russell is the backup option at fullback if needed.

Although there was no question as to whether Sam Darnold would play, he also does not have an injury designation, which is a step in the right direction compared to last week when Darnold was listed as questionable for the Divisional Round against the San Francisco 49ers.

Seahawks elevate both practice squad running backs for NFC Championship Game vs. Rams

gettyimages-2253974905.jpg

The Seattle Seahawks need all the help they can get at running back with Zach Charbonnet out for the season, and they’re taking no chances in terms of available depth.

Having brought back George Holani from injured reserve, the Seahawks also elevated Cam Akers and Velus Jones Jr to the game day roster for Sunday’s NFC Championship against the Los Angeles Rams. This gives the Seahawks four running backs available: Kenneth Walker III, Holani, Akers, and Jones. Holani, Akers, and Jones are also all kickoff return options.

While Akers and Jones maxed out their regular season practice squad elevations, those do not carry into the postseason, at which there are no limits to how many times a player can be elevated to the active roster.

No offensive lineman being elevated also bodes well for the health of backup left tackle Josh Jones, who was a full participant in Friday’s practice but was listed as questionable with a knee injury.

Seahawks vs. Rams game inactives will be announced about 90 minutes prior to the 3:30 pm PT kickoff.

Why the Rams are a fitting NFC Championship opponent for Sam Darnold, Seahawks

gettyimages-2252636652.jpg

And so it comes down to this. One more win from an unlikely trip to the Super Bowl for the Seattle Seahawks. All they have to do is beat the Los Angeles Rams at home for a second time in a month to book their trip for Santa Clara. Way easier said than done given how close these teams have played, but it’s nevertheless the last hurdle for the Seahawks to clear to win the NFC Championship.

In a season in which the top of the NFC West beat the hell out of each other and all won at least 12 games, it’s fitting that the Conference Championship is an all-NFC West affair. But that’s not the only reason why this is an apt trilogy.

The Sam Darnold redemption story

There’s no escaping it even though I think this story is exceedingly overdone and boring. Over the past year and change, Sam Darnold went from a prominent draft bust to a good NFL starting quarterback. As a one-year stopgap with the Minnesota Vikings, he defied expectations and had a genuinely impressive season on a 14-win team.

Then the last two weeks happened.

A blowout loss to the Detroit Lions with the division and number one seed on the line, followed by a humiliating exit Wild Card against the Los Angeles Rams in which he took nine sacks and turned it over twice. In a way, this might have helped the Seahawks because it surely lowered his free agent value.

Fast forward to his first season with the Seahawks and it’s almost an identical scenario for Sam, but so far the results have been different. After a disastrous performance in a loss against the Rams, and some disastrous 2nd half moments in the rematch with the NFC West on the line, Darnold battled back and helped lead an extraordinary comeback to give the Seahawks control of the division and never relinquish it. Week 18 was the same “win and you’re the top seed, lose and you’re a Wild Card” scenario as last year, but Darnold managed the game well and the Seahawks dispatched the 49ers on their home turf.

Despite an injury scare in practice, Darnold started and picked up his first playoff win in a humongous blowout of the 49ers. We can cross out “can you win a playoff game with Darnold at quarterback?” from the list. Now Sam is set up for one more showdown with the team that has given him considerable difficulty in terms of sacks and protecting the ball. A win would be one hell of a full circle moment for Darnold.

If the Seahawks are at the top of their game, then Darnold won’t have to do much. “Game manager” being seen as a pejorative is ridiculous because that’s the baseline thing you want your quarterback to do. Whether or not he’s some elite QB you want to build around in the long term is a conversation for another day. And even still, when Darnold was asked to lead a comeback against the Rams just a few weeks ago, he did it. It’s possible he’ll be called upon one more time, and I have confidence he can lead Seattle to victory if the game is in his hands.

A chance for the Seahawks to exorcise some McDemons

The decline of the Seahawks as the preeminent NFC West favorite coincided with the hiring of Sean McVay. While the San Francisco 49ers needed a little bit more time to become a contender again, McVay transformed the Rams in an instant. From the minute the Rams stormed into Seattle and won 42-7 with the NFC West title more or less at stake, the Seahawks have been playing catch-up against one of the great coaches of this generation.

Swept in 2018, eliminated from the playoffs in 2020, swept in 2021, swept in 2023, it’s been a one-sided rivalry for way too long. The only time the Seahawks have truly “owned” McVay was when the Rams were heavily injured in 2022, and even then Seattle needed late comebacks to win both games.

Mike Macdonald was hired by the Seahawks in part because a new voice was needed to help overcome the 49ers and Rams. He’s conquered the Niners (at least this season) and now it’s time to do the same to the Rams. This is the best the Seahawks have been in the McVay era, but will it be enough to get to the Super Bowl?

Revenge for prior Lumen Field eliminations

The Seahawks have almost a spotless record in home playoff games at Lumen Field. They’ve beaten every team they’ve faced… except the Rams, who have gotten them out of their own building twice.

You probably remember (or wish to forget) the embarrassing 30-20 exit in the 2020 Wild Card, which put an emphatic end to “Let Russ Cook” and would’ve emptied out Lumen Field even if COVID-19 didn’t already do that. It made winning the NFC West against the Rams in the same building just a few weeks prior look worthless.

The first Lumen Field playoff game was against the St. Louis Rams in the 2004 Wild Card. It was a back-and-forth game that unfortunately ended in one of the many drops committed by Seahawks receivers that year. The indignity of getting super swept by an 8-8 division rival.

While I would’ve preferred not having to do the NFC West go-around again in the playoffs, perhaps the real proof the Seahawks are back was always going to be this route.

It’s go time.

Seahawks vs. Rams score: Seahawks conquer Rams again, advance to Super Bowl 60

gettyimages-2258183569.jpg

The Seattle Seahawks are going to the Super Bowl!

In another classic with the Los Angeles Rams, an offensive shootout turned into a defensive battle at the end. Sam Darnold had a magnificent 346-yard, 3-touchdown, 0-turnover performance, while the Seahawks defense tightened up when it needed to after a mighty struggle all season. In the end, Darnold had to outduel Matthew Stafford in an epic battle. And with the game on the line, the Seahawks made a critical turnover on downs with less than five minutes to go. By the time the Rams got the ball back, there wasn’t enough time to respond.

It was a 31-27 victory for the Seahawks to win the NFC Championship Game at Lumen Field, conquer an NFC West rival in the rubber match for the second week in a row, and next up is a rematch with the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 60!

The Seahawks are NFC champions in Mike Macdonald’s second season! This special 50th season will continue into February!

Seahawks vs. Rams 1st Half Recap

The Seahawks won the coin toss and put the top-ranked Rams offense on the field first. After a 4-yard run by Kyren Williams, two throws to Puka Nacua yielded just three yards. A three-and-out to start things for the Seahawks defense!

Seattle had an opening drive touchdown in their last meeting against the Rams, and history repeated itself here. Sam Darnold’s first completed pass was a 51-yard deep shot in single coverage to Rashid Shaheed. At long last, the deep ball works to Seattle’s speedy receiver!

After a Jaxon Smith-Njigba catch-and-run inside the 10, Seattle went to Kenneth Walker III three times. The third time was the charm as he bounced to the outside for the score. What a start! 7-0 Seahawks.

Sooner or later, Stafford and Puka will connect on a long ball even against an elite defense. Devon Witherspoon was burned 1-on-1 for a massive gain of 44 yards. Stafford threw three straight incomplete passes, setting up Harrison Mevis for a 44-yard field goal, which he easily converted. 7-3 Seahawks.

Kenneth Walker III was the star of Seattle’s next drive, making Rams tacklers miss in space as a receiver and as a runner. Jaxon Smith-Njigba had the real highlight, which was a remarkable one-handed grab on third down to move the chains in the red zone.

A holding penalty on Anthony Bradford set Seattle back, while an end zone throw to A.J. Barner fell incomplete on third and goal. Jason Myers’ 27-yarder gave the Seahawks a 7-point lead again. 10-3 Seahawks.

The Rams responded in the second quarter with a Stafford dart to Davante Adams, who got free from Witherspoon for 23-yards. Nick Emmanwori stepped up with a tackle for loss, a pass break-up on a throw for Adams, and DeMarcus Lawrence forced a strip-sack of Stafford, which the Rams recovered. Harrison Mevis booted one through from 50 yards, but Sean McVay was rightfully incensed over the lack of a face mask penalty. 10-6 Seahawks.

The Seahawks had one first-down throw to JSN to midfield, but a dropped snap by Sam Darnold and a Braden Fiske sack killed the drive. Michael Dickson’s first punt was muffed by Xavier Smith at his own 10, but he was able to fall back on it. That proved beneficial in more ways than one, as the Rams maintained possession and easily marched down the field on Seattle’s top-ranked defense. A 21-yard catch by Puka Nacua and a 19-yard explosive run by Blake Corum helped get the Rams into Seattle’s red zone. Kyren Williams got free for an easy touchdown on a blown coverage to give the Rams the lead. 13-10 Rams.

Seattle went three-and-out in next to no time, which gave the Rams a chance to add to their lead before halftime. Instead, Nick Emmanwori had two PBUs to force a three-and-out basically by himself. Sam Darnold made the Rams pay in just 34 seconds. Jaxon Smith-Njigba caught a 42-yard bomb and then the go-ahead touchdown two plays later. 17-13 Seahawks.

The Seahawks punted on their opening possession with a chance to increase their lead. But wait, back come the Rams! A four-play, 75-yard drive with explosive throws to Colby Parkinson and Davante Adams set LA up at the Seattle 2. On the rub route concept, Adams got free from Riq Woolen for the score. 24-20 Seahawks.

Sam Darnold had to respond and he responded with some help from a former Rams star. A 9-play, 65-yard drive featured two third-down conversions, both of which went to Cooper Kupp. The second conversion resulted in Kupp’s first touchdown in a Seahawks uniform at Lumen Field. 31-20 Seahawks.

Devon Witherspoon had a tough night and it got tougher when Davante Adams broke free for another explosive play. An illegal use of hands penalty backed the Rams up out of field goal range. Riq Woolen nearly picked off Matthew Stafford on 3rd and 12, but it was still about to be 4th and 12 and a punt… until Riq was penalized for taunting the Rams sideline, which meant an automatic first down. The next play saw Puka burn Woolen for a touchdown. Unbelievable sequence. 31-27 Seahawks.

Staring a rapid-fire three-and-out in the face, Sam Darnold threw a sideline pass to Kenneth Walker III, who dove ahead for a new set of downs on 3rd and 10. A great play to wrap up a chaotic third quarter. Darnold scrambled into Rams territory and then got plastered on a sack on the ensuing play. Kam Kinchens came through unblocked on a blitz and that essentially ended the drive. A 3rd and 10 throw to Rashid Shaheed was broken up by Cobie Durant, forcing Seahawks punt to the Rams’ own 10.

Matthew Stafford was surgically picking apart the Seahawks defense like they were amateurs. On 4th and 1, the 37-year-old somehow turned a would-be sack by DeMarcus Lawrence into a scramble for a first down. An improvised pitch play to Puka Nacua set up a first down at Seattle’s 12. Devon Witherspoon came up HUGE with consecutive pass breakups, including on 4th down to force a turnover on downs with 4:54 to go!

Backed up at their own 6, draining clock and forcing Rams timeouts was of the utmost importance. Kenneth Walker III took a checkdown for 16 yards while making three Rams defenders miss. A first-down run by K9 gained three yards and Sean McVay called his first timeout with 3:26 to go. Darnold to Rashid Shaheed was off-target and incomplete, with calls for pass interference on Quentin Lake unanswered. The pass was late, out of bounds, and deemed uncatchable. On 3rd and 7, Darnold threw over the middle to Cooper Kupp, who stretched out for the first down by the barest of margins. No challenge from McVay. His final timeout was used with 3:05 to go after a gain of nothing for Walker. A play-action to JSN gains a first down but he goes out of bounds with 3:00 to go. Seattle opted to throw on 2nd and 7 and the pass to JSN was incomplete, but a Cobie Durant hold on Cooper Kupp gave Seattle a fresh set of downs with 2:12 to go!

Kenneth Walker surged for six yards to get to the two-minute warning. A first down clinches the game but they don’t get it. Kyren Williams fair catches at his own 7 with :25 to go.

Nacua with the catch to the 30 and a spike with :10 left. Seahawks call their last timeout. Pass to Nacua is caught but he’s in bounds! CLOCK TICKS! SEAHAWKS WIN! SEAHAWKS GO TO THE SUPER BOWL!

Super Bowl 60: Seahawks vs. Patriots is a rarity not seen in over 20 years

imagn-28087244.jpg

The Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots are no strangers to making the Super Bowl. New England has competed for the Lombardi Trophy at least once in every decade since the 1980s, totaling a whopping 12, aka 20 percent of all Super Bowls ever played. Seattle may not have the same success as the Patriots (then again, nobody does), but the ‘Hawks are heading for their fourth Super Bowl since 2005 and seeking to avenge their defeat to New England from 11 years ago.

What makes this year’s Super Bowl interesting is the state of these teams in more recent times.

Super Bowl 60 is only the sixth time both teams missed the playoffs the previous year

The Seahawks narrowly missed the postseason in 2023 and 2024, while the Patriots’ last appearance came in 2021 under Bill Belichick.

The last Super Bowl to feature two teams was Super Bowl 38 in the 2003 season, when the New England Patriots defeated the Carolina Panthers in a 32-29 thriller. Why yes, the Patriots missed the playoffs with Tom Brady the year after they won their famous first Super Bowl, while the Panthers were 7-9 and unheralded.

As for the other four Super Bowls between the previously playoff-less? The Baltimore Ravens smashed the New York Giants in Super Bowl 35 in 2000, the St. Louis Rams won by a yard over the Tennessee Titans in the previous season, the San Francisco 49ers got their first Lombardi Trophy over the Cincinnati Bengals in the 1981 campaign, and some guy named Joe Namath guaranteed a New York Jets win over the Baltimore Colts in 1969.

In many other seasons, Seahawks vs. Patriots would’ve been a popular preseason Super Bowl pick, most notably the year it actually happened. I doubt many called this one back in August.

Seahawks surpass 2013 Super Bowl team on all-time DVOA list

gettyimages-2258212267.jpg

The Seattle Seahawks head to the Super Bowl as favorites in the rematch against the New England Patriots. It’s a franchise rematch, as none of the players remain on either team from 11 years ago.

But en route to an appearance as Super Bowl favorites, the 2025 Seahawks have statistically surpassed the 2013 group that won the whole thing.

By DVOA, Seattle currently sits as the sixth-best team ever charted. The best team in 18 years, since the 16-0 New England Patriots, who ultimately lost to the Eli Manning Giants.

Here's where the #Seahawks stand among the top teams in DVOA history, including the playoffs. Regular-season ratings are also included. pic.twitter.com/q9MEUiju83

— Aaron Schatz 🏈 (@ASchatzNFL) January 26, 2026

The 2013 Seahawks come in at 15th.

For those unfamiliar with DVOA, Defense-adjusted Value Over Average has been a remarkably good indicator of overall team strength since it came out. It uses a slew of advanced metrics, accounts for specific game situations like down and distance, and compares it to league average to give what is effectively a percentage output of how much better a team is than the average NFL team that year.

For example, the Seahawks and Rams were this year’s number 1 and 2 teams by DVOA. That would indicate the best game of the postseason, and indeed the NFC Championship Game blew the doors off every game prior.

More than that, actually, Seattle and L.A. was the best matchup of high-rated DVOA teams in over 45 years.

By DVOA, the NFC Championship Game is essentially the best NFL matchup of the last 47 years, and by a lot.

This is only the seventh playoff game between two teams over 30% DVOA. SB LIV (2019 KC-SF) is the one not on this table. pic.twitter.com/KjsQwzV723

— Aaron Schatz 🏈 (@ASchatzNFL) January 19, 2026

The two teams were a full 12 percentage points better than the Seahawks-Broncos Super Bowl.

DVOA gets built from the scores of all three phases. Offense, defense, and special teams. What it means is that this year’s team – when compared to the rest of the league – is as good as Seattle’s 2013 defense, while rostering a better offense and far better special teams.

Interestingly, Aaron Schatz, the godfather of DVOA, noticed that while the Rams were better than the New England Patriots all season, it’s actually the Patriots who are the better team right now. After New England beat Denver and Los Angeles lost to Seattle, the Patriots moved up to the 2nd best DVOA and Rams dropped to 3rd.

Meaning, the Seahawks postseason has gone from facing the league’s “best” offense (San Francisco 49ers) to the best not-Seattle team by DVOA (Rams) to their replacement at second-best (Patriots).

Bring it on.

Enemy Reaction, 2026 NFC Championship Game: Los Angeles Rams

imagn-28087250.jpg

There may not have been a signature end-of-game play by the Seattle Seahawks in this NFC Championship victory—no ‘The Tip’ and no Russell Wilson to Jermaine Kearse overtime magic—but this magical Seahawks season nevertheless continues on after an astonishingly entertaining 31-27 win over the Los Angeles Rams. Sam Darnold delivered when the Seahawks needed him most, while the defense stiffened up with the season on the line after one of their worst performances all season. Special teams? Well that’s not a fair fight when the Rams can’t go a week without a special teams blunder.

It’s Enemy Reaction time! This is jam-packed with a lot of screenshots for an eventful game, and you better believe I perused other SB Nation NFL sites for their reactions to Seattle’s victory. The game thread comments from the Rams are courtesy of Turf Show Times.

Post-Game recap: Rams top priority? Extend Sean McVay, Les Snead (Gary Klein, LA Times)

Now that the Rams’ season is over, they will begin deciding when to offer extensions to key players such as receiver Puka Nacua, defensive lineman Kobie Turner, edge rusher Byron Young and offensive lineman Steve Avila.

But there are much more pressing contracts to consider. Like the one for the most important person in the organization: coach Sean McVay.

And the one for the second-most important person: general manager Les Snead.

[…]

The Rams are projected to have $46.5 million in cap space, according to Overthecap.com.

Nacua is due for a monster extension, and Turner, Young and Avila also figure to get paid. And if Stafford returns for an 18th season, after his MVP-caliber performance, he no doubt will demand a raise.

But first the Rams should lock up the team that built this team: McVay and Snead.

Post-Game recap: No late miracles for the Rams this time (Jim Alexander, LA Daily News)

Well, the Rams did have one small triumph Sunday evening.

Lumen Field can seem like a cauldron of noise when Seahawks fans get going – primarily when the opposition has the ball – and these ominous notes showed up on one of the auxiliary scoreboards: Seattle’s fans have been responsible for 302 false start penalties, and the single-game record is 11.

The Rams didn’t jump, or twitch, or flinch once at the line of scrimmage Sunday. That and five bucks or so will get you one of this city’s most famous products – and yes, they serve Starbucks in the press box here.

But it’s not going to win the Rams a championship this year.

[…]

There was a Darnold the Rams haven’t seen much of in their last few meetings: No interceptions, one sack. In the two regular season meetings with the Seahawks this year, he’d thrown six picks, and he was sacked four times in Seattle’s 38-37 overtime victory in December. A year ago, in the Rams’ playoff victory over Minnesota, Darnold was intercepted once and sacked nine times.

But it wouldn’t be unfair to say that these were the two best teams in the NFC, and not just the last two standing. Maybe – maybe – even the two best teams in the league, as the top finishers in the NFL’s toughest division.

That’s not much comfort now for the Rams.

One more win. That’s all that is left for the 2025 Seattle Seahawks to achieve football immortality. They have gone through the NFC West gauntlet and come out the other side as winners. Fittingly, their path to winning their second Lombardi Trophy involves beating the same franchise they agonizingly lost to at another NFC West stadium. It’s Seahawks vs. Patriots on Feb. 8 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.

What a season. What a journey. What a team. And the job isn’t done yet.

Thanks for reading and go’ Hawks!

Bill Belichick Pro Football Hall of Fame snub is also bad news for Mike Holmgren

gettyimages-1918040296.jpg

In a shocking turn of events, former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick will not be going into the Pro Football Hall of Fame later this year.

The six-time Super Bowl champion (well, eight once you include his days as Bill Parcells’ defensive coordinator for the New York Giants) reportedly failed to receive the minimum 40 votes out of 50 needed to get that gold jacket and enshrinement in Canton. It seems as if New England’s scandals during their Super Bowl days are a factor as far as why Belichick got the snub.

Multiple sources told ESPN that Spygate and Deflategate, the twin cheating scandals during the Patriots’ championship run, came up in deliberations among voters. A voter who spoke on condition of anonymity said that Polian, an ardent Kraft supporter and former general manager of the Buffalo Bills and Indianapolis Colts — a chief Patriots rival during their dynasty — told some voters he believed Belichick should “wait a year” before induction as penance for Spygate, the 2007 cheating scandal that cost the team a first-round draft pick. Commissioner Roger Goodell also fined the Patriots $500,000 and fined Belichick $250,000.

Polian did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In the interest of consistency, surely there’s no way Tom Brady should be first-ballot given he was actually suspended for Deflategate a few years later.

Belichick was the lone finalist in the Coaches wing of the Hall of Fame, which is a problem for any coach waiting in line for their turn to be inducted. Former Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers head coach Mike Holmgren, who was denied a Hall of Fame entry last year despite making it as a finalist, probably should not anticipate being a finalist in 2027.

Amusingly, Patriots owner Robert Kraft is a first-time finalist in the Contributors wing. It’ll be interesting to see if he gets in before Belichick.

Klint Kubiak coaching news: Seahawks OC to interview with Raiders again

gettyimages-2237567125.jpg

After the end of the NFL’s regular season, Seattle Seahawks’ offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak appeared to be one of the hottest names in the coaching carousel.

However, a month later, that landscape looks completely different. Kubiak’s Seahawks are headed to the Super Bowl after a masterclass performance by him against the Los Angeles Rams, and only two head coaching jobs remain open in the league.

It seems Kubiak will have his choice between the Las Vegas Raiders and the Arizona Cardinals if he wants to take the leap to leading an organization. He’ll have an opportunity to impress the Raiders’ brass this Saturday, according to Raider Nation Radio host and California Post columnist Vincent Bonsignore.

I'm hearing Klint Kubiak's second interview with the @Raiders is scheduled for Saturday.

— Vincent Bonsignore (@VinnyBonsignore) January 28, 2026

Kubiak has met with both the Raiders and Cardinals once before, during the Wild Card weekend when the Seahawks were on bye. During this pre-Super Bowl bye week, Kubiak can only be interviewed by either the Riaders or Cardinals. Essential Sports writer Tony Pauline reported that Kubiak will be speaking with the Cardinals “later in the week.” Pauline said he was told Kubiak would prefer to stay with the Seahawks unless the Cardinals’ offer was “amazing.”

The Raiders have been interested in Kubiak from the start of the coaching cycle, and so it’s possible the Seahawks will know more about their future at OC as soon as Saturday.

Seahawks’ first Super Bowl 2026 injury report includes Ernest Jones IV

gettyimages-2256830407.jpg

The Seattle Seahawks did not practice on Wednesday, but an injury report was still released during the team’s bye week ahead of next Sunday’s Super Bowl in Santa Clara.

Going by estimations, the most notable name on here as a hypothetical non-participant is linebacker Ernest Jones IV, who’s apparently dealing with a chest injury. The other DNP was third-string tackle Amari Kight, who was inactive for last week’s NFC Championship with a knee injury.

There are no other real areas of concern. Brady Russell and Drake Thomas both left the win over the Los Angeles Rams with injuries, but Mike Macdonald didn’t seem too concerned about either. Fullback Robbie Ouzts may be a bit more of a question mark regarding his neck injury, but he was listed as a limited participant for a practice that never happened.

Another notable addition to the injury report is safety Julian Love, who also was listed as limited with a shoulder injury. Love missed much of the regular season with a hamstring injury.

Here’s the full injury report, which at this point should be zero cause for concern since the Seahawks aren’t playing this weekend. Mike Macdonald said there will be something of “a normal week cadence on Thursday” before the team flies out to San Jose on Sunday to prepare for the Super Bowl against the New England Patriots.

Seahawks Super Bowl 2026 injury update: Charles Cross sits, Ernest Jones limited in walkthrough

The Seattle Seahawks returned to the practice field for the first time since punching their ticket to Super Bowl 60, providing a little more clarity about where they stand over a week before the big game.

The most notable change from Wednesday’s estimation report is the health of starting left tackle Charles Cross, who has been battling through a foot injury for the Seahawks’ playoff run. Cross was listed as limited on Wednesday, but did not practice on Thursday. One of Cross’ backups, Amari Kight, and tight end Eric Saubert also did not practice.

Luckily for the Seahawks, Cross has plenty of time to work on his injury, and it appears his primary backup, Josh Jones, is heading toward being healthy. Jones was listed as limited alongside some other significant players on Thursday’s report.

Star linebacker Ernest Jones IV, who made a surpise apperance on Wednesday’s estimation with a chest injury, was a limited participant on Thursday. Quarterback Sam Darnold continued to be limited by an oblique injury, and fullback Robbie Ouzts was held back with a neck injury.

On the New England Patriots’ side of things, their quarterback, Drake Maye, was limited with a shoulder injury. Tackle Thayer Munford joined linebackers Harold Landry and Robert Spillane as the three Patriots who did not practice on Thursday.

Here is the full report for both teams:

Obviously, there is no game designation needed for Friday. The two teams will practice near Levi’s Stadium next Wednesday through Friday.
