RSS Capitals Team Notes

Look, I gotta say - as a Sabres fan who's watched my team struggle for what feels like an eternity, seeing the Caps go through a rough patch is... well, it's still rough to watch good hockey teams stumble. But let's be real here.

A 6-5 OT loss to Edmonton? That's not exactly a disaster. You're playing Connor freakin' McDavid on the second night of a back-to-back after WINNING in Calgary. That's a solid road trip even with the OT loss. You still grabbed a point out of it!

The "loosey-goosey" defensive play is concerning if it becomes a pattern, sure. But back-to-backs in Alberta are brutal for any Eastern Conference team. The travel, the time zone changes, playing against two pretty decent Western teams - that's a grind.

What I'm more interested in is this "potential turning point" talk. The Caps have been one of the better stories in the league, so a few bumps in the road shouldn't have anyone panicking. Thompson getting some attention could be interesting if they're looking at moves to shore things up.

And yeah, that winter storm is no joke. Stay safe out there, Caps fans. Hockey's a nice distraction but don't be doing anything stupid trying to get to games or whatever.

Anyone got thoughts on what specific moves might help if they're actually at a turning point? Or is this just typical mid-season media drama?

Capitals @ Kraken Recap: Caps Continue to Slide, Lose 5-1 in Seattle

The Washington Capitals came into tonight’s game with the Seattle Kraken after a decent back-to-back in Alberta. They found success in Calgary with a 3-1 win, and then they snagged a point in Edmonton after a wild matchup ended 6-5 in OT in the Oilers’ favor. The Caps took some steps in the right direction with those two games and had the potential to use that as a turning point for the rest of…

Capitals vs. Kraken Game Thread

The Caps tackle the penultimate game of their six-game road trip tonight – and the final game outside of the Eastern time zone – as they take on the Kraken. They’ll be looking to build off a pretty decent weekend that saw them take three of four points out of Alberta, and while stringing wins together remains elusive, they can take a stab at starting a new streak with a win tonight.

Capitals vs. Red Wings Recap: Caps Prevail Over Wings, Hockey Gods in 4-3 SO Win

In a game that Tom Wilson called a must-win, the Caps came out and took two points from the Red Wings that they desperately needed. It started out rough with the Wings scoring on a very early power play, but the hockey gods were looking after them because the goal was called back for being offside. After that, the Caps took over and stayed strong on the pursuit to get the win.

Capitals vs Red Wings: How the Game Was Won

The Capitals’ 4-3 shootout win against the Red Wings was a wild one, to put it mildly. First, it seemed like the Caps had the win in the bag being up 3-1 with less than two minutes left in the game…until the hockey gods gave the Red Wings two lucky-bounce goals to tie it up. When overtime proved not enough to decide a winner, it went to the shootout, which the Caps have been…

Capitals vs. Hurricanes Recap: Swords Up in 4-3 OT Win

After a pretty brutal road trip (that at least had a decent ending), the NHL schedulers didn’t give the Caps any breaks, hitting them with a Saturday night bout against the Carolina Hurricanes as a “welcome home” present. That’s a tough task on any night; on this night, the Caps went into it minus both their goalies, half of their top-four defensemen, and Connor McMichael. All of that makes…

Capitals vs. Hurricanes: How the Game Was Won

Last night’s Metro Division throwdown with the visiting Hurricanes was one for the scrapbooks…but it certainly didn’t feel like it would be early on in the game. Despite having the better of the play from the opening faceoff, a couple of unforced mistakes had the Caps down by two after the first period and down 3-0 before the second was five minutes old. It seemed like this game was destined to be…

Capitals vs. Islanders Recap: The Streak Goes to Three in 4-1 Win

Their last two games required extra time to secure the victory. Tonight, the Caps weren’t messing around with that post-60 minutes nonsense, getting the equalizer and the game-winner in roughly 30 seconds early in the second period, then putting the lockdown on the Isles to ride to victory. Plus: After ceding the first goal, the Caps had the perfect response with two quick strikes from Martin…

Capitals vs. Islanders: How the Game Was Won

After a couple of nail-biters against Detroit and the Hurricanes, and with just a handful of points separating themselves and their opponent, the Caps needed to find a way to just get a regulation win last night. It wasn’t always the prettiest – which tends to be the way it goes when the Caps and Isles clash – but the Caps put together a workmanlike effort to protect their rookie netminder and…

Capitals @ Flyers Recap: Caps Can’t Complete Comeback in Philly, Lose 4-2

Despite being Metro Division opponents, the Washington Capitals had yet to face the Philadelphia Flyers this season before tonight’s matchup. The Capitals were on the second half of their tenth back-to-back on the season tonight, heading into Philly after beating the Islanders 4-1 in DC last night. The Flyers, on the other hand, had a two-day break between their last game—a home OT loss to the…

Capitals @ Flyers: How the Game Was Lost

The Washington Capitals came into last night’s game looking to extend their modest three-game winning streak. Unfortunately, the Philadelphia Flyers had other plans. The Flyers gave themselves a two-goal lead in the first 25 minutes of the game, putting pressure on the Caps to make the comeback. They made a pretty good effort all things considered, tying the game just 2:40 into the third.
