Steelers work out 6 Tuesday

gettyimages-2155572688.jpg

The Steelers worked out six players on Tuesday, per KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson and the NFL transaction sheet.

The tryouts were defensive backs Zy Alexander, Evan Holm, Makari Paige, Doneiko Slaughter, and J.T. Woods, as well as tight end Jaheim Bell.

Woods has the highest draft pedigree of the bunch as a 2022 third-round pick by the Los Angeles Chargers. He played in 13 games across the 2022-23 seasons, starting one, with eight career total tackles. The 6’2, 195-pound safety scored a 9.43 RAS coming out of Baylor three years ago. He has just 89 career special teams snaps.

The lone non-defensive back the Steelers worked out, Bell is a hybrid tight end/fullback who was drafted in the seventh round of the 2024 NFL Draft by the Patriots. Despite being undersized for a traditional tight end at 6’2, 241 pounds, he scored a strong 8.5u RAS entering the draft.

Bell appeared in 15 games for the Patriots in 2024, playing 176 special teams snaps and logging two catches for 20 yards.

Pittsburgh didn’t make any immediate signings following the workouts, but tryouts this time of year can also serve as the opening stage of building offseason 90-man rosters.

Steelers place Darnell Washington on season-ending IR

gettyimages-2247138151.jpg

The Pittsburgh Steelers have placed tight end Darnell Washington on injured reserve, ending his season. The Georgia product suffered a broken arm in Week 17 against the Cleveland Browns that required surgery to repair.

Washington put together his best professional season by far in 2025, notching career highs in receptions and yards. Not only did he achieve new career highs in both categories, but his 2025 production also outweighs 2023 and 2024 combined. In his first two seasons, Washington caught a combined 26 passes for 261 yards. Using him more as a receiver in 2025 paid dividends for the Steelers’ offense.

The Steelers have placed Darnell Washington on IR.

Jack Driscoll has been signed to the active roster and TE Jaheim Bell was signed to the practice squad.

— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) December 31, 2025

With their best blocking tight end out of the lineup, the Steelers will need to find new ways to spring open outside run lanes for Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell if they hope to defeat the Baltimore Ravens and win the AFC North.

Steelers-Ravens injury report: T.J. Watt still limited

gettyimages-2250443721.jpg

The Steelers kicked off the new year with a Thursday practice ahead of Sunday’s playoff-deciding matchup against the Baltimore Ravens.

Pittsburgh still isn’t entirely healthy, but showed some signs of improvement. Starting left guard Isaac Seumalo was limited after not participating on Wednesday. Star outside linebacker T.J. Watt, still recovering from a punctured lung, was limited for yet another practice.

Defensive coordinator Teryl Austin hinted that Watt could be back for Sunday’s game. “It will be great to have him back,” he told the media Thursday via The Athletic’s Mike DeFabo. “At what capacity? We won’t find out until Sunday. But it will be great to have him back.”

Cornerback Brandin Echols, wide receiver Calvin Austin III, and linebacker Malik Harrison remained limited for Pittsburgh on Thursday. The only player to move back in terms of health was cornerback James Pierre, who was limited with a calf injury on Wednesday but downgraded to a DNP on Thursday with a new illness designation.

As for the Ravens, star quarterback Lamar Jackson was a full participant for a second straight practice, pointing to the two-time MVP starting in Week 18. Jackson said his odds of playing Sunday were “100%.”

Baltimore also had a slew of limited participants, including two starting offensive linemen. Starting outside linebacker Kyle Van Noy (quad) and wide receiver Rashod Bateman (illness) were DNPs for the Ravens.

Steelers get big Lamar Jackson update ahead of matchup with Ravens

gettyimages-2253055427.jpg

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens will clash in Week 18 with the AFC North on the line. The winner will host a playoff game during wild card weekend, while the loser goes home and misses out on the postseason.

The big question entering the Week 18 tilt was the status of Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson. The two-time MVP missed Week 17 with a back injury that he sustained in Baltimore’s Week 16 loss to the New England Patriots. However, Jackson himself made sure everyone knew he’d be playing in the final game of the season.

“100 percent,” Jackson said when asked if he would play against the Steelers.

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) January 1, 2026

Jackson has just one win in Pittsburgh, coming back in 2019 against Mason Rudolph and Duck Hodges in overtime. Jackson threw three interceptions in the game.

Friday Night Happy Hour: New year edition

gettyimages-2252133297.jpg

Welcome back to BTSC’s Friday night open thread.

  1. New Year’s was yesterday. How did you spend the holiday? Did you watch any football?
  2. Running back Kenneth Gainwell was voted Steelers MVP by his teammates today. It’s a well-deserved honor and not something anyone was expecting this offseason. What do you think of the choice? And can you think of a more unexpected MVP season from a Steelers player?
  3. T.J. Watt said he’s playing against Baltimore. Do you think he’ll be on a pitch count? What kind of impact do you expect him to make?
  4. Most of the beat writers I follow weren’t too happy that the Steelers game this week was scheduled for Sunday Night Football. Do you have any strong feelings on the subject?
  5. With the regular season ending in two days, 18 teams will be entering the offseason next week. When does draft season start for you? After the regular season? Once the Steelers are done playing? After the combine?
  6. I received some cash and gift cards for Christmas and used them to buy a cheap lap steel guitar I’ll attempt to teach myself to play once it arrives today. What’s the last item you splurged to buy for yourself? (And any lap steel tips? I’m listening.)

Steelers connected to $180 million quarterback

gettyimages-2251468237.jpg

The Pittsburgh Steelers could see their season end on Sunday should they lose to the Baltimore Ravens and choke away the AFC North after holding a three-game lead over Baltimore earlier in the season.

No matter the result, the Steelers will have questions surrounding the quarterback position for the third straight offseason. Aaron Rodgers is going to be a free agent and may retire. If the Steelers don’t retain the four-time MVP, 2026 will mark the sixth consecutive season in which the Steelers have had a different Week 1 starter.

While many expect the Steelers to draft a quarterback, Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report labels Pittsburgh as a potential landing spot for Atlanta Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins.

“The Steelers don’t, however, have a clear long-term quarterback plan,” Knox writes. “They’re currently riding with 42-year-old Aaron Rodgers, though his plan upon joining Pittsburgh was to make this his final season… If he decides to hang it up—or opts to take his last ride with a different team—Pittsburgh will be right back in the quarterback market. Unfortunately, the Steelers aren’t going to end up with a draft position high enough to land one of the top QB prospects in April. Like Rodgers, Cousins is a pure pocket passer at this stage in his career, and he’d slot right into the system we’ve seen coordinator Arthur Smith run this season. He might not be an upgrade over Rodgers, but he probably wouldn’t deliver an offensive decline either—especially if the Steelers can upgrade their supporting cast.”

Cousins has started seven games in 2025 in relief of Michael Penix, throwing nine touchdowns and four interceptions. The four-time Pro Bowler signed a $180 million deal with the Falcons in 2024, but was benched in the final month of the season. The Falcons are 4-3 in games that Cousins has started in 2025.

Steelers are clearly preparing for life after Mike Tomlin

gettyimages-2253170783.jpg

It’s been something you could set your watch to for the better part of five years – conversations starting about whether or not the Pittsburgh Steelers will move on from Mike Tomlin right around this time of the year. However, those conversations have largely just been speculation more than anything, with the Steelers themselves never showing any real interest in moving on from the longest-tenured head coach in major American sports.

Until now.

The Steelers have been connected to multiple head coaching candidates over the last week. Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated noted that Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula is a name to watch for Pittsburgh.

“The Steelers, Ravens and Bills have generated conversation in recent weeks,” Breer writes. “Is there any reality to it? I don’t think these would be firings. But there is some thought that Mike Tomlin could look at a reset, with the Pittsburgh roster potentially going through one soon too, and take a year or two in TV before returning to the sideline. And interestingly enough, Shula’s name has been connected to the Steelers, in case there is an opening.”

Additionally, Dianna Russini of The Athletic reports that the Steelers had internal conversations about potentially hiring Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman before he committed to returning to the university.

“Though Freeman ultimately announced he’s staying at Notre Dame, there’s a strong belief around the league that this won’t be the last time his name is connected to NFL opportunities,” Russini writes. “The Giants, Titans and Browns all had internal discussions about Freeman, as did the Pittsburgh Steelers (in the event longtime coach Mike Tomlin decided to step away).”

This is the first time I can recall insiders going on record with names they believe could replace Tomlin – that’s not a coincidence. It’s not to say that Tomlin will 100 percent be gone in 2026, but it’s very clear that the Steelers are preparing for his departure. Things like this don’t get out by accident, and it’s certainly something to monitor in the coming weeks.

Steelers elevate DB for Week 18

gettyimages-2231352011.jpg

The Steelers have elevated defensive back D’Shawn Jamison from the practice squad to the active/inactive roster ahead of the team’s Week 18 game against the Baltimore Ravens, Pittsburgh announced Saturday.

After the game, Jamison will revert back to the practice squad.

Jamison first joined the Steelers in 2024. He’s appeared in two games for Pittsburgh already this season as an elevation, logging all nine of his snaps on special teams. While he hasn’t appeared on defense yet for the Steelers in the regular season, Jamison is a slot-capable cornerback who gives Pittsburgh some extra depth at the position.

Despite elevating Jamison for another game, Pittsburgh has better depth at cornerback than it has in recent weeks, with both Brandin Echols and James Pierre expected to play Sunday against Baltimore.

Jamison has been elevated alongside offensive tackle Jack Driscoll for past games. However, Driscoll was officially signed to the Steelers’ 53-man roster earlier this week, taking Darnell Washington’s roster spot after the tight end was placed on injured reserve.

If the Steelers make the playoffs, they will have unlimited practice squad elevations, even regarding players who have already been elevated a maximum number of times during the regular season. However, elevations will still be capped at two per week.

Steelers 2026 opponents revealed

gettyimages-2253168424.jpg

The Pittsburgh Steelers clinched the AFC North in what was one of the craziest games of the 2025 season. The Steelers defeated the Baltimore Ravens 26-24 after Tyler Loop missed a field goal in the final seconds. With the win, they will host the Houston Texans in the wild card round on Monday night to close the opening round of the playoffs.

With the Steelers clinching their first division title since 2020, we now know who they will play in 2026, and their opponents for next season are as follows:

Home

  • Baltimore Ravens
  • Cincinnati Bengals
  • Cleveland Browns
  • Houston Texans
  • Indianapolis Colts
  • Denver Broncos
  • Atlanta Falcons
  • Carolina Panthers

Away

  • Baltimore Ravens
  • Cincinnati Bengals
  • Cleveland Browns
  • Jacksonville Jaguars
  • Tennessee Titans
  • New England Patriots
  • New Orleans Saints
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  • Philadelphie Eagles

The Steelers play the NFC South and AFC South in 2026, which makes for a relatively easy set of games, all things considered. The NFC South was won by the 8-9 Panthers, and the Falcons just fired head coach Raheem Morris. The Buccaneers collapsed to close out 2025, losing seven of their last nine. The Saints had a late surge, winning four of their last five, but they are still a ways away from being big threats.

Road contests against the Jaguars, Patriots, and Eagles won’t be easy, but the Steelers’ home schedule is very favorable, with the toughest non-AFC North game looking to be the Denver Broncos.

Steelers release veteran cornerback ahead of playoffs

gettyimages-2242116800.jpg

The Pittsburgh Steelers have released veteran defensive back Tre Flowers. Pittsburgh signed Flowers on Christmas Day after he was released by the Detroit Lions at the end of November. He appeared in just one game for the Steelers, that coming in Week 17 where he played two special teams snaps in the 13-6 loss to the Cleveland Browns.

Flowers was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He was a big part of the Cincinnati Bengals’ defense that made it to the Super Bowl in 2021, losing to the Los Angeles Rams. He has spent time with the Atlanta Falcons, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Indianapolis Colts, as well.

Steelers’ Cam Heyward isn’t satisfied with AFC North Division Title

gettyimages-2254685476.jpg

The Pittsburgh Steelers miraculously defeated the Baltimore Ravens 26-24 on Sunday night, claiming their first AFC North title since the 2020 season. Steelers defensive tackle Cameron Heyward had his fingerprints all over this game, with seven total tackles, a quarterback hit, and a pass breakup that led to a T.J. Watt interception. He was even involved offensively, as he helped push his brother, Connor Heyward, into the end zone.

During Watt’s post-game press conference, he joked that the AFC North Champions hat was too small to fit on the elder Heyward’s head. However, the 15-year veteran said that wasn’t the case at all, and made clear his sights are set on more than a division title.

“There’s a reason I didn’t put the hat on,” Heyward said. “I want a different hat.”

T.J. Watt joked that the AFC North Champions hat couldn’t fit on Cam Heyward’s head.

Heyward with a quip back at that:

“There’s a reason I didn’t put the hat on. I want a different hat.”

— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) January 5, 2026

This was not the only time Heyward hinted that he is looking for much more than just a division title this season. Heyward later mentioned during his press conference that he takes after players like Brett Keisel, Aaron Smith, and Casey Hampton in the way that he gives maximum effort on each play.

“I’m jealous of them. They have something I don’t have….when they come back for their reunion, I want to show them some hardware.”

Cam Heyward mentioned Aaron Smith, Brett Keisel, Casey Hampton, and others for why he always goes all out each and every play.

He got candid.

“I’m jealous of them. They have something I don’t have….when they come back for their reunion, I want to show them some hardware.”

— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) January 5, 2026

Heyward’s message is direct: he wants to win in the postseason. That’s something the Steelers have not done in nine years. The Steelers’ quest for that ‘different hat’ starts next Monday night, when Pittsburgh hosts the Houston Texans.

Source: https://www.behindthesteelcurtain.c...-isnt-satisfied-with-afc-north-division-title

What a finish to the regular season. That missed field goal by Loop had me holding my breath - you never know with division games like that. Cam Heyward's comments really hit home though. The man has been anchoring that defense for 15 years and still doesn't have a playoff win to show for it. When he talks about being jealous of guys like Keisel and Hampton, you can feel how much that Super Bowl hardware means to him.

The 2026 schedule looks pretty manageable on paper. NFC South and AFC South aren't exactly murderer's row right now. Home games against the Texans, Colts, and Broncos should be winnable, and the road slate could be worse. That Eagles game will be interesting depending on how both teams look next fall.

Releasing Tre Flowers makes sense - he barely saw the field and they've got better depth now with Echols and Pierre healthy. Jamison gives them flexibility on special teams and as emergency slot depth if needed.

Monday night against Houston should be a good test. The Texans have been inconsistent but they're dangerous. Here's hoping Heyward gets that different hat he's after.

This comes after the Pittsburgh Steelers ended the Ravens’ season in Week 18, defeating Baltimore 26-24 to win the AFC North and eliminate the Ravens from playoff contention.

Harbaugh was the second-longest tenured coach in the NFL behind Mike Tomlin. They are second all-time in head-to-head meetings behind only George Halas and Curly Lambeau.

Steelers Read & React: Playoff bound

gettyimages-2254700198.jpg

After a heart-race-inducing season finale, our Pittsburgh Steelers have punched their ticket to the playoffs for the third year in a row, and the fifth time in six years. Making it extra sweet was the victory coming against the Ravens, and in the process, giving us a clip of Baltimore misery and a play-by-play soundbite that will be included in Steelers-Ravens montages for generations to come. That Baltimore fired longtime head coach John Harbaugh just two days after this defeat will surely only add to the legend when we talk about this bitter rivalry, which continues to be the NFL’s best of the 21st century.

With the Steelers’ position in the playoffs secured, we wanted to give one last shoutout to one of the heroes of the team in Week 18. But then it’s all eyes ahead towards the playoffs.

Cam Heyward’s Week 18 was one to remember

gettyimages-2254975409.jpg

RB: I was so impressed with Cam Heyward’s performance against the Ravens on Sunday that I dedicated an entire section of my postgame column to talking about it. But now that the all-22 is out, I figured it would be worthwhile to revisit it.

But first, some context. The well-traveled, but true, talking point is that Heyward is 36 years old and somehow still looking like an elite interior defensive lineman. But it’s even more impressive than that. Even as one of the oldest defenders in the league, Heyward somehow ranks first in snaps played at his position per PFF. He’s made the most of those snaps, as well: Among his position, he’s first in solo tackles, second in stops, second in hurries, and ninth in total pressures.

Heyward’s 2025 season didn’t have the hottest of starts, but as it’s gone on, he’s once again looked like a premier player at his position. And he had what I’d call his best performance of the season against the Ravens on Sunday, playing like a veteran who knew it might be his last chance at winning that ever-elusive Super Bowl ring. His emotions after the game made that beyond clear.

Cam Heyward mentioned Aaron Smith, Brett Keisel, Casey Hampton, and others for why he always goes all out each and every play.

He got candid.

“I’m jealous of them. They have something I don’t have….when they come back for their reunion, I want to show them some hardware.”

The Ravens were also privy to the season Heyward is having, choosing to run away from him on their first play from scrimmage. That choice paid off with a chunk gain for Derrick Henry, but Heyward still gave quite the effort attempting to chase the run from behind.

Heyward was temporarily removed from the game after James Pierre was blocked into his knees during the play, but came back in a play later. And on that same drive, he made his first impact play of the game.

— Ryland Bickley (@_Ryland_B) January 7, 2026

Heyward has long been known as a power guy, with one of the most feared bull rushes in the NFL. But on Sunday, his athleticism was also on display. While Heyward’s strength made it near-impossible for the Ravens’ offensive line to handle him one-on-one, he was also moving horizontally well to keep up with Baltimore’s outside zone attack.

Again, watch the play above. It’s a bad rep for the Ravens’ left guard, but also a surprising display of quickness by Heward to get around the blocker and corral Derrick Henry.

I won’t blather on with a play-by-play of every one of Heyward’s highlights from the Ravens game. There were just too many. But here’s a compilation of most of the rest:

Cam Heyward was on one against the Ravens pic.twitter.com/HpmuRgLjxN

— Ryland Bickley (@_Ryland_B) January 7, 2026

Heyward’s effort stands out. On the pass-rushing rep where he didn’t connect with the quarterback, he still drew a hold. On another play, he was pushed back, fought until the whistle, and still made a tackle.

And his run defense and two-gapping? “Textbook” is an overused compliment, but I’m not sure what else to say. The talk that this was one of the best games of Heyward’s already storied career isn’t all that hyperbolic.

Look even at T.J. Watt’s game-changing interception. Who got a hand in the passing lane? You guessed it (shoutout Alex Highsmith, too).

The point? Well, enjoy watching Cam Heyward while you can. And while there isn’t a ton of optimism around these parts, given the team’s recent record in the playoffs, remember that these matchups still mean everything to those on the roster – especially names such as Heyward who don’t have that many games left.

How big is D.K. Metcalf’s return from suspension for the Steelers?

gettyimages-2252121649.jpg

RP: After watching the Steelers come just a Tyler Loop shanked field goal away from choking away the AFC North in his absence, I don’t think it can be oversold how important Metcalf is for this team. Sure, Aaron Rodgers hasn’t exactly been lighting up the box score this year – he has yet to throw for 300 yards or more this season, and Russell Wilson and Justin Fields only did so once apiece last year – but the already constipated passing game came to a screeching halt without Metcalf out the past two games.

Against Cleveland, Rodgers managed only 168 yards passing and had just 155 through three quarters against the Ravens before that explosive fourth quarter. In those two games, running backs (23.6%) and tight ends (32.9%) accounted for 56.5% of the Steelers’ receiving yards. Regardless of position, the Steelers averaged 8.8 yards per reception during Metcalf’s absence. To put that into context, no team averaged less than 9.3 YPR on the year, and only four teams (the Browns, Jets, Raiders, and Titans) averaged less than 10.0 YPR.

Without Metcalf, there are no perimeter threats to frighten opposing defenses. Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Calvin Austin III both have the deep speed to be vertical threats, but teams are more than happy to dare MVS to catch the ball, and Austin isn’t winning many contested downfield battles either.

And while Metcalf hasn’t played particularly well in contested situations himself this year, there has yet to be another Steeler with whom Rodgers can depend on when he attempts a back-shoulder throw.

this back shoulder ball from aaron rodgers to dk metcalf was the beginning of the end for the lions.
what a ball. pic.twitter.com/hoIR9FKcbn

— unbiasedmedia (@unbiasedpicks) December 22, 2025

There’s also no other receiver on the roster who can match his explosiveness. With the exception of Ben Skowronek (17.3), who only has four receptions on the year, Metcalf leads the team in YPR (14.4) as well as touchdowns (6). He has more than double the yards (850) of the next highest wide receiver, and he trails only running backs Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell in yards after catch (446) on the team, which makes sense given that the running backs typically catch the ball at or behind the line of scrimmage.

Quite simply put, there is no one else on the team who can do this:

21.17 MPH top speed for DK Metcalf on the TD. But how about Isaiah Rodgers hitting 23.32 (!) MPH trying to run it down, per @NextGenStats. pic.twitter.com/KkZBEjqhul

— Nate Tice (@Nate_Tice) September 28, 2025

The Steelers offense wins when it can either:

A) String together long, meticulous drives with runs of four or more yards and a quick passing game that stays ahead of the sticks and relies on YAC.

B) Break off the occasional explosive play.

Metcalf is one of the few Steelers who can relatively consistently provide the latter. Warren and Gainwell are typically the others – and sometimes Freiermuth – but without Metcalf, defenses are able to creep up and restrict the Steelers offense, which makes producing explosive plays out of the backfield even harder than it normally is.

Metcalf isn’t a perfect player who will fix all of the Steelers’ problems, but the defenses only get tougher once you reach the playoffs. In basketball, it’s often set that when the playoffs arrive, teams that hope to advance far need to have a bucket getter they can rely on when things are at their most challenging. While he may not be a top-10 receiver in the league, Metcalf is that bucket getter for Pittsburgh. But even if Metcalf is slowed by a lockdown corner such as Houston’s Derek Stingley Jr., the Steelers offense will still have a much better chance with Metcalf in the fold than they would without him. The attention and gravity Metcalf will demand from the opposing offense will benefit the other players around him. His presence alone should open things up for the running backs and tight ends.

And that’s key, because the Steelers will need every last one of them at their best if they want to advance far in these playoffs.

So… Do the Steelers have a chance against Houston?

gettyimages-2193471400.jpg

RP: We don’t want to get too far into the weeds here because we’ve still got our game preview coming out on Friday. But the short answer: Maybe?

A few weeks back, when Ryland and I power-ranked potential playoff opponents, we both agreed that the Texans would provide the second-toughest matchup for the Steelers. That’s largely thanks to the Texans’ intimidating defense. Houston’s fierce pass rush, paired with one of the league’s best secondaries, is still a major threat to Pittsburgh’s rather rigid approach to offense.

And Houston enters the playoffs as one of the league’s hottest teams. The Texans last lost on November 2, 18-15 at home against Denver. Since then, they’ve won nine straight. They averaged 26.2 points per game during that stretch, and allowed just 19.3.

That sounds like a tough draw for a Steelers team that’s scored 21.6 a game and allowed 21.3 a game over that same stretch. But fortunately for the Steelers, the Texans’ offense is equally as streaky as theirs is, and Houston is another team with a habit of winning ugly. Of those final nine games, six were one-score games. A seventh game, a 20-10 victory over the Chiefs, feels like it spiritually identifies with the type of slow-paced, grind-it-out games that both of these teams often find themselves in.

In the part of my brain that has been fried by an upbringing on SNL reruns and the Chappelle Show, I like to picture a scene between Mike Tomlin and DeMeco Ryans somewhere around midfield before the game. They’re engaging his some friendly pre-game banter when Mike Tomlin embraces his inner Bane:

“Oh, you think the slop is your ally. But you merely adopted the slop. I was born in it. Molded by it. I didn’t see a high-scoring offense until I was already a man. By then, it was nothing to me but blinding. The ugly win betrays you – because it belongs to ME.”

Chris Boswell then redeems last week by hitting six 50-yarders in a row, and Ryans’ head is left spinning as the Steelers win the ugliest 18-17 playoff victory of all-time.

At least that’s how I envision the Steelers winning if they’re able to do us proud on Monday. Some of you might be pointing out that Mike Tomlin is Bane in that fantasy, and Batman ultimately does get it together enough to win by the end of that movie.

And to that I say… Can you just let a guy daydream?

RB: Ryan and I are on a similar wavelength here, so I’ll keep my thoughts short.

The Houston defense is truly elite, and it will not be an easy matchup for a below-average Pittsburgh offense, even with Metcalf back in the fold. If you thought Aaron Rodgers targeting one-on-ones with Scotty Miller versus Denzel Ward was bad, wait until it’s against the cornerback duo of Derek Stingley Jr. and Kamari Lassiter.

And while the Pittsburgh O-line has held up well in pass protection this year, the combination of Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter is miles above what the Ravens were putting on the field on Sunday.

But the Texans, despite their winning streak, haven’t exactly been dominant over that stretch, as Ryan pointed out. And the offense isn’t as terrifying as the defense. C.J. Stroud is a big-armed quarterback with a talented wide receiver room, and he could certainly find success passing the ball deep on Pittsburgh as Lamar Jackson did on Sunday.

However, Houston doesn’t have a Derrick Henry or Lamar Jackson in the backfield – just Stroud (209 rushing yards this year), past-his-prime Nick Chubb, and the rookie Woody Marks. They’re a lot more one-dimensional and are a winnable matchup for the Steeler defense.

The Texans are favored, and they absolutely should be. But playing at home, the Steelers definitely have a fighter’s chance. There are a lot of strengths to this Houston team, but anything can happen in the NFL. Remember, the Texans only beat the hapless Raiders by two points last month.

The Steelers signed cornerback Tre Flowers to the practice squad Wednesday, the team announced.

— Pittsburgh Steelers (@steelers) January 7, 2026

Flowers was originally signed to the Steelers’ 53-man roster on Christmas Day, taking the spot vacated by wide receiver D.K. Metcalf after he was placed on the suspended list. After Metcalf was brought back, Flowers was released.

The Steelers don’t have to release anyone from their practice squad to make room for Flowers as the team let go of offensive tackle David Sharpe on Tuesday.

Flowers played two special teams snaps for Pittsburgh in the Steelers’ loss to the Cleveland Browns Week 17. The 2018 fifth-round pick has appeared in 98 games over his NFL career.

The Steelers will next take the field on Monday against the Houston Texans in the Wild Card round of the NFL Playoffs.

The Steelers’ Thursday injury report showed that the team is largely healthy ahead of a Wild Card matchup against the Houston Texans on Monday night.

Pittsburgh running back Jaylen Warren was the team’s only non-participant with an illness designation. Veteran Cam Heyward was limited, but he had a rest designation.

The Texans aren’t quite as healthy, with star cornerback Kamari Lassiter still a DNP and several other starters limited.

Steelers unlikely to pick up Broderick Jones’ fifth-year option, says insider

gettyimages-2185328033.jpg

As the Pittsburgh Steelers prepare for one of the league’s most formidable edge-rushing duos, new starting left tackle Dylan Cook faces a defining stretch of his young career.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin recently described Houston Texans pass rushers Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter as “simply the most dynamic edge rush tandem” in the NFL. Cook, who began the season as Pittsburgh’s fourth-string left tackle, is now tasked with protecting the blind side against elite competition — a role few anticipated for him entering the year.

Cook’s emergence could have significant long-term implications for the Steelers’ offensive line, particularly regarding former first-round pick Broderick Jones.

Jones suffered a season-ending neck injury in Week 12 against the Chicago Bears, and his recovery timeline remains uncertain. He is set to enter the final season of his rookie contract in 2026, meaning the Steelers must decide this offseason whether to exercise his fifth-year option.

According to Steelers insider Mark Kaboly, that decision appears increasingly unlikely to be favorable for Jones. Appearing on 93.7 The Fan, Kaboly — who also covers the team for The Pat McAfee Show — stated he believes the Steelers will “absolutely not” pick up Jones’ fifth-year option.

Steelers insider @MarkKaboly thinks "absolutely not" the Steelers will not pick up Broderick Jones' 5th-year option.

Mark thinks the Steelers have options now with Dylan Cook and it could be like a Bud Dupree situation where Jones improves and is brought back.

— Austin Bechtold (@AustinRBechtold) January 7, 2026

Kaboly’s comments add intrigue to what is shaping up to be a complex offseason for Pittsburgh’s front office. Cook’s continued strong play could solidify him as a long-term option at left tackle, while questions remain about Jones’ health and positional fit moving forward.

One potential scenario involves a position change. Veteran guard Isaac Seumalo is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent and will be 33 years old next season. If Jones is medically cleared, the Steelers could consider transitioning him inside to guard, a move that may offer greater stability after his uneven performance at tackle.

For now, the organization’s priority remains Jones’ health. Medical evaluations and recovery progress will play a central role in determining his future with the team.

Still, Kaboly’s remarks introduce legitimate doubt about the long-term outlook for the Steelers’ 2023 first-round pick, as Pittsburgh balances performance, health, and financial considerations heading into a pivotal offseason.

Steelers-Texans injury report: Jonnu Smith limited Friday

Tight end Jonnu Smith was a late-week addition to the Steelers’ injury report on Friday ahead of Pittsburgh’s Wild Card matchup against the Houston Texans.

The receiving tight end was limited with a glute injury, but Pittsburgh has an extra day to prepare for the Texans with a Monday night kickoff.

Another change for the Steelers since Thursday’s report is that the team has opened up depth defensive lineman Isaiahh Loudermilk’s window to return from injured reserve. Loudermilk was limited in practice with an ankle injury.

Running back Jaylen Warren, who didn’t participate in Thursday’s practice with an illness, was back to practicing in full on Friday.

The Texans haven’t released their Friday injury report yet.
