NFL announces change to first round of 2026 NFL Draft

gettyimages-2211796386.jpg

The NFL announced today that the length of time to make a pick in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft will be shortened from ten minutes to eight minutes. That will make the first round move more quickly than it has in the past, which is a good thing. It has always made me crazy when the teams picking at the top take the whole ten minutes to make their selection when it is obvious who they are going to pick.

This will cut down the time teams will have to negotiate trades in the first round of the draft. That could come into play for the Tennessee Titans. If they do end up with the first pick, they will have a trade negotiated long before the draft ever comes. If they end up somewhere in the three to five range, they currently have the third pick; they could be negotiating a deal when they go on the clock.

The 2026 NFL Draft will take place April 23rd through 25th in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Titans Reacts Survey: What’s more important, wins or draft position?

gettyimages-2192139754.jpg

Unfortunately, for the third year in a row, we as Tennessee Titans fans are torn between rooting for the team to win games for morale, or lose games to secure a better draft pick. It’s hard for me to cheer against the team on Sundays, but there is no doubt that getting the number one overall pick would be huge for the rebuild that is underway here. With all of that being said, this week we ask the question, what are you rooting for on Sundays; a win or a better draft pick?

There is also the standard confidence question. Honestly, I felt better about that one after the losses to the Houston Texans and the Seattle Seahawks than I do now. That all has to do with how well Cam Ward played in those games, and how poorly he has played since.

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NFL. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Titans fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

Titans news: NFL Draft order tiebreakers

imagn-27766913.jpg

With the Tennessee Titans winning against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, they moved into a three-way tie for the first pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. In case you aren’t aware, strength of schedule is the tiebreaker when it comes to where teams will pick in the draft. The team with the easiest schedule moves to the top of the line. That means that if the season ended today, the Titans, who have faced the toughest schedule in the league, would have the third pick in the NFL draft behind the New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders.

Even if the Titans end up tied with just the Raiders at the end of the season, the Raiders, who beat the Titans earlier in the season, would get the first pick. Head-to-head doesn’t come into the tiebreaking scenarios unless strength of schedule and a few other things are tied. All of that to say, the Titans have to have the fewest number of wins in the league to get the first overall pick. There is no other scenario where they would win a tiebreaker for the first pick.

  • Apparently, some people took issue with Cam Ward’s postgame comments. I guess they wanted him to do some somersaults after the team improved to 2-11 on the season. Ward is brutally honest with the media and has been that way since he first came to Nashville. I appreciate it.
  • There is also the issue from Easton’s article where Will Boling revealed something that happened on the team plane. That stuff is supposed to stay in-house.
  • Blake Beddingfield posted his weekly review over at PaulKuharsky.com. It’s a great read every week.
  • Tony Pollard has been a solid contributor for this team over the last two years. It was fun to see him have a big game on Sunday:
.@NextGenStats:

Tony Pollard excelled on the edge of the field, with 141 yards outside the tackles, including a touchdown where he rushed for 60 yards over expected. #Titans

Tennessee Titans week 15 rooting guide

gettyimages-2249462845.jpg

For the third straight year, we, as fans of the Tennessee Titans, find ourselves scoreboard watching for draft position instead of playoff position. The Titans had the first pick in the draft before they beat the Cleveland Browns last week. The win dropped them to pick number three.

Here is the top 10 in the 2026 NFL Draft heading into week 15:

  1. New York Giants 2-11
  2. Las Vegas Raiders 2-11
  3. Tennessee Titans 2-11
  4. Cleveland Browns 3-10
  5. New Orleans Saints 3-10
  6. Washington Commanders 3-10
  7. New York Jets 3-10
  8. Arizona Cardinals 3-10
  9. Cincinnati Bengals 4-9
  10. Los Angeles Rams (via Atlanta Falcons) 5-9

As I mentioned earlier this week, strength of schedule is the tiebreaker when it comes to draft position. The Titans are at a big disadvantage there because they have faced the toughest schedule in the NFL this season. So a win this week could drop them all the way to pick eight if other things fell a certain way.

With all of that being said, here are the games we need to be paying attention to this weekend:

Cleveland Browns (3-10) @ Chicago Bears (9-4) 12:00 Sunday

This one is pretty straightforward. We should cheer for the Browns to win here because that would get them to three wins and put them a full game ahead of the Titans.

Washington Commanders (3-10) @ New York Giants (2-11) 12:00 Sunday

This one is a little more complicated, with both teams being right behind the Titans in draft order, but the Giants winning here would get them to three and one game clear of the Titans. Go Blue!

Las Vegas Raiders (2-11) @ Philadelphia Eagles (8-5) 12:00 Sunday

Another easy one here. Let’s go, Raiders!

New York Jets (3-10) @ Jacksonville Jaguars (9-4) 12:00 Sunday

J-E-T-S. Jets! Jets! Jets! This one would be double fun because it would mean those idiots who scream Duvall would be sad.

Arizona Cardinals (3-10) @ Houston Texans (8-5) 12:00 Sunday

Another easy one here because it’s always fun to root against the Texans.

Carolina Panthers (7-6) @ New Orleans Saints (3-10) 3:25 Sunday

I love me some Bryce Young, but hopefully we’ll get Bad Bryce in this one so the Saints can pull off the upset.

Are the Titans going to cut Lloyd Cushenberry?

gettyimages-2239792354.jpg

The Tennessee Titans are coming off their best offensive line performance of the campaign. The Titans rushed for 184 yards in Sunday’s 31-29 Week 14 victory over the Cleveland Browns. Tony Pollard rushed for a career-high 161 yards and two touchdowns, scores of 65 and 32 yards respectively.

Rookie quarterback Cam Ward was sacked just once despite facing the potential sack record-breaker in Myles Garrett. Also, 90 of Pollard’s rushing yards occurred before contact, per Next Gen Stats, proving the offensive line was creating rushing lanes.

All of this was achieved without starting center Lloyd Cushenberry in the lineup.

Here's an insane Tony Pollard stat to go along with his epic run chart:

Per @NextGenStats, Pollard got 90 of his 161 rushing yards today before contact. Shoutout the offensive line!

But here's the hilarious part: coming into today, he had 83yds before contact on the SEASON pic.twitter.com/eMdKVnUbVr

— Easton Freeze (@eastonfreeze) December 7, 2025

Cushenberry has missed two consecutive weeks with a foot injury. He’s been replaced by veteran Titans fan favorite Corey Levin in the lineup. The offensive line has been better with Levin as opposed to Cushenberry, who entered this season coming off a catastrophic 2024 torn Achilles injury.

Cushenberry has struggled, to be expected, given last year’s injury. Levin is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent, but the former Chattanooga standout has been a Titan for the majority of his career and could easily be re-signed to a team-friendly deal. The Titans should also be careful to overreact and make Levin a permanent starter, something he’s never been considered to be in his career.

But you can’t help but wonder if Mike Borgonzi will consider releasing Cushenberry this offseason. He inherited his four-year, $50 million contract from Ran Carthon. Borgonzi has already severed ties with several Carthon acquisitions. Cutting Cushenberry would create $8 million in additional cap space if designated as a post-June move, per Over The Cap.

There was also this interesting tidbit from senior team editor Jim Wyatt in a recent mailbag. “As for the o-line group next year, I suspect three of the five will be back,” Wyatt wrote. Doing some simple math, it’s essentially a guarantee that Peter Skoronski, JC Latham, and Dan Moore Jr. will return next season. Wyatt could be hinting that Cushenberry and free-agent-to-be Kevin Zeitler will potentially be replaced.

Alternatively, upgrading Cushenberry would be difficult. In-house option Jackson Slater seems destined to replace Zeitler at right guard, though it’s difficult to say what his long-term potential is considering we haven’t seen him play yet. Replacing Cushenberry adequately would probably mean the Titans are drafting a center highly, or paying someone like Tyler Linderbaum (who probably won’t actually hit free agency) handsomely.

Cushenberry could also improve next season, another year removed from his Achilles injury. The Titans have a difficult decision to make with Cushenberry’s status this coming offseason. Right now, they’re better off with Levin in the lineup despite the vast difference in their salaries.

5 observations from the Titans’ Week 15 loss to the 49ers

gettyimages-2251189814.jpg

The Tennessee Titans were defeated 37-24 by the San Francisco 49ers in Sunday’s Week 15 contest. The Titans dropped to 2-12, but remained No. 3 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft order due to fellow losses for the New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders. We’ve conjured up five observations from Sunday’s latest setback.

Secondary all out of sorts

The Titans’ secondary entered the game with rookies Kevin Winston Jr. (nickel) and Marcus Harris (boundary) playing out of position for the third straight week. Reserve safety Mike Brown went down with an injury, and then Winston left with a hamstring. Dennard Wilson responded by putting Kendell Brooks at safety with Xavier Woods, moving Amani Hooker to nickel. Well, Woods then left with a hamstring injury, forcing Wilson to shuffle again. Harris went to nickel, Hooker went back to safety (with Brooks) and Kaiir Elam entered to play cornerback opposite Darrell Baker Jr.

Cam Ward from a clean pocket

The Titans’ offensive line has consistently improved in recent weeks. They were excellent in pass protection last week and that largely continued versus the 49ers. Rookie quarterback Cam Ward was especially sharp throughout the first half, going 10-of-150 for 1o5 yards and a touchdown. This 34-yard passing score from Ward to Gunnar Helm was a thing of beauty.

— NFL (@NFL) December 14, 2025

Responding up front

Speaking of that offensive line, they had to shuffle the lineup as well. Center Lloyd Cushenberry returned from a multi-week injury, but Dan Moore Jr. missed the game at left tackle, with Oli Udoh stepping up. Tony Pollard rushed for 98 yards and a touchdown via 13 carries (7.5 YPC) and Ward was not sacked. The offensive line has drastically improved in recent weeks.

Missed Cam Ward opportunity

As effective as Ward was throughout the first half, one glaring misfire hurt the offense. Ward missed a wide-open Jefferson on a 1st-and-10 from the 49ers’ 40-yard line with 19 seconds left. Jefferson had won deep on a double move and may have scored a walk-in touchdown had the rookie quarterback connected with his veteran wideout. The Titans only gained eight more yards on that possession and Joey Slye missed a 50-yard field goal.

Draft order

As mentioned, the Titans remained at No. 3 in the 2026 NFL Draft order after the Giants and Raiders also loss. Essentially every bottom-feeding team lost in Week 15, including the Jets, Saints, Cardinals, and Browns. It’s a reminder that the Titans won’t have an easy time moving back up the draft order following their Week 14 victory over the Browns, though it’s worth acknowledging the Raiders-Giants play in Week 16.

This Jeffery Simmons TD was AWESOME

Titans drop to 2-12 with 37-24 loss to the 49ers

gettyimages-2251919535.jpg

It’s almost over. The Tennessee Titans dropped to 2-12 on the season today after losing in San Francisco 37-24. The Titans’ defense had no answers for the 49ers’ offense today. To be fair, they lost three safeties in the first half. It’s going to be tough to stop any offense when that happens.

There was at least one fun thing that happened in this game. Cam Ward scrambled to keep a play alive and found Jeffery Simmons in the back of the end zone for a touchdown. That came after a 43-yard Ward pass to Van Jefferson.

The only thing to even care about with this team on the field anymore is Ward. He missed another potential big play down the field today to Jefferson. He’s missed too many of those throws this year. There were also at least two passes he threw that could have been intercepted. It’s tough to evaluate him playing with such a bad supporting cast, but it is safe to say there is a lot of stuff he needs to work on this offseason.

Gunnar Helm set the franchise record for receptions as a rookie and had a really nice touchdown catch. He also inexplicably lined up offside twice on the same drive. Then, he left the game with a toe injury (he did return at least). It’s been that kind of year for the Titans.

The Titans had a chance to get the ball back down by two touchdowns with good field position in the fourth quarter after the 49ers missed a field goal, but Simmons hit the long snapper again. The penalty gave San Francisco a first down. They would end up getting a field goal.

The Titans also didn’t get much help in regards to the 2026 NFL Draft order today. The Saints won to get to four wins, but that was it. The Titans still currently hold the third pick in next year’s draft.

Titans opening odds: Tennessee a 3.5-point underdog vs. Chiefs

gettyimages-2240850583.jpg

The Kansas City Chiefs come to Nissan Stadium to take on the Tennessee Titans this week. Before yesterday, that game looked like another one that the Titans had no chance at winning. This defense, being as banged up as it is, against Patrick Mahomes would be a blowout. Well, Mahomes went down with a torn ACL yesterday. That means the Titans will get the Chiefs with Gardner Minshew at the helm.

The Titans are currently a 3.5-point underdog over at FanDuel Sportsbook. Look, I’m still not touching that line. As I sit here on Monday, do I think the Titans have a chance to cover? Absolutely, I do, but if we know anything about this team, we know that they are wildly inconsistent. That makes them a terrible team to ever bet on.

We also don’t know what the Chiefs ‘ mindset will be coming into this game. They were eliminated from the playoffs yesterday. It is the first time they will not be a part of the postseason in over a decade. There are also rumors out there that Andy Reid could be retiring at the end of the season. All of that to say, there are a lot of things going on with Kansas City. How locked in will they be when the game kicks off on Sunday?

It might be worth sprinkling some money on Titans +3.5….

Titans offensive line has figured something out in recent weeks

gettyimages-2251391048.jpg

The Tennessee Titans entered the season with expectations on the offensive line. General manager Mike Borgonzi signed Dan Moore Jr. to a lucrative contract to play left tackle. Veteran Kevin Zeitler also joined the offensive line via free agency.

Lloyd Cushenberry is on a $50 million contract. Peter Skoronski and JC Latham complete the offensive line as first-round picks. Despite those investments, the Titans’ offensive line failed to meet expectations early.

A switch has completely flipped in recent outings. The offensive line was outstanding throughout the 31-29 Week 14 victory over the Cleveland Browns. Cam Ward had more touchdowns (2) than sacks (1) in that game. Tony Pollard rushed for a career-high 161 yards and two touchdowns (6.4 yards per carry) via 25 carries.

They built on that momentum throughout Sunday’s Week 15 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Ward enjoyed his second consecutive multi-TD passing game. The pocket was beautifully clean on his 34-yard score to Gunnar Helm. Ward wasn’t sacked at all. The 49ers are one of the worst pass-rushing units in the league. The offensive line took full advantage of a positive matchup.

#Titans QB Cameron Ward on the offensive line's performance: "I think we're playing very good, especially up front." https://t.co/ekHBzxgxKc

— 104-5 The Zone 📻 (@1045TheZone) December 15, 2025

The Titans also ran the ball effectively again. Pollard gained 104 ground yards and scored a touchdown via just 14 attempts. Pollard, who looked totally finished a few weeks ago, averaged 7.4 yards per carry. Tyjae Spears averaged 11.3 YPC, rushing for 34 yards on three carries. It’s a shame the Titans trailed by so many points and couldn’t stick with the run.

Some thought maybe the Cushenberry injury improved the Titans’ offensive line. Corey Levin had stepped into the lineup flawlessly. But Cushenberry returned to the lineup on Sunday and they didn’t miss a beat up front in pass protection or run blocking.

The offense has gotten significantly better since parting ways with Brian and Bill Callahan. Moore, Skoronski, and Latham are guaranteed to return next season. Zeitler is a pending free agent. Cushenberry is a potential cap casualty, but his chances to stick improve if the offensive line performances stay consistent over the upcoming final three weeks.

Titans place three safeties on injured reserve

gettyimages-2250593292.jpg

In the first half of the game on Sunday, the Tennessee Titans saw three safeties go down to injuries. Today, all three of those safeties, Kevin Winston Jr., Xavier Woods, and Mike Brown, were placed on injured reserve. It’s really unfortunate to see Winston down for the rest of the year. He’s a guy who has played pretty well in limited time this season.

To replace those guys, the Titans signed Erick Hallett from the Detroit Lions practice squad and Sanoussi Kane from the Baltimore Ravens practice squad. Those guys will probably see some pretty extensive playing time on Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs. At least they won’t have to face Patrick Mahomes.

You know, Dennard Wilson has really done a remarkable job this year, considering the personnel he has had to work with. Every week, it seems like they are having to bring guys in and put them on the field right away. It’s tough to have a lot of success doing that.

Adam Schefter confirms Amy Adams Strunk fired Brian Callahan

gettyimages-1880105498.jpg

If you have been paying attention at all, you already knew that Amy Adams Strunk was the one who fired Brian Callahan earlier this season. All of the messaging this offseason was that Chad Brinker and Mike Borgonzi were going to be patient this season. They knew the Tennessee Titans were facing an uphill battle this season due to the overall state of the roster. There was no reason to bring Callahan back this year just to fire him in early October.

Yesterday, Adam Schefter was on Cover Two with Zach Lyons and Blaine Bishop on 104.5 The Zone here in Nashville, and more or less confirmed the order to fire Callahan came directly from AAS. So, after all of the talk about how she was going to take a step back and let her football people run the football operations, she once again got mad and made a rash decision. Was it the wrong decision? Well, that is up for debate. It was pretty obvious that Callahan was in over his head, but firing him during the season didn’t really help the team at all.

The more important question now is, what does this mean for Brinker/Borgonzi when trying to hire the next coach? Is a potential candidate going to look at this situation and not want to come here because the owner has a tendency to make quick, often irrational decisions?

A few years ago, AAS seemed like one of the best owners in the NFL. Then, Jon Robinson traded A.J. Brown, and the wheels came off. Of course, it’s not really that simple, but it’s hard not to trace it all back to that night.

Pair of Titans reserve offensive linemen could be key to offseason plans

gettyimages-2229932378.jpg

Tennessee Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi will be tasked with adding premium talents at premium positions this offseason. The lack of difference makers at wide receiver, EDGE, and cornerback has especially been evident throughout this 2-12 season. Despite the big and obvious items on the to-do list, Borgonzi can’t neglect the lesser-priority depth issues, either.

The Titans have really improved across the offensive line lately. They’ve allowed a combined one sack in the previous two games. Tony Pollard is running the football with renewed vigor, and Cam Ward has consecutive multi-TD passing performances. In those two contests, the Titans have scored the most (31) and second-most (tied, 24) points of the season.

Titans C Corey Levin was excellent in Cleveland 🗣️ pic.twitter.com/ndzYVKaaiz

— AtoZ Sports Nashville (@AtoZSports) December 12, 2025

That’s despite dealing with numerous injuries up front. Corey Levin recently started multiple games at center before Lloyd Cushenberry returned in Week 15. Midway through the Cleveland Browns victory, Oli Udoh replaced Dan Moore Jr. at left tackle. Udoh then started this past weekend’s game versus the San Francisco 49ers.

Levin and Udoh have done excellent work in spot starts. Levin started that Browns game that produced 31 points and 184 rushing yards. Udoh entered midway through the contest and helped limit Myles Garrett. In Week 15, the veteran swing tackle helped keep Ward clean (zero sacks).

Both Levin and Udoh are pending free agents. Most NFL teams are dissatisfied with their offensive line depth. Despite the Titans being inconsistent up front this season, they can’t complain about the jobs Levin and Udoh have done.

Levin feels especially notable. Cushenberry is a potential cap casualty this offseason. Whether the Titans cut Cushenberry or not, Levin provides good depth at both center and guard (he stepped in for Kevin Zeitler at right guard momentarily).

Moore has also dealt with injuries and occasional inconsistencies at left tackle. Udoh has performed at an acceptable level given the current state of backup NFL offensive linemen. The Titans should re-sign both Udoh and Levin this offseason.

A Titans Head Coaching Profile: Mike McCarthy

gettyimages-2190092440.jpg

Mike McCarthy is the former head coach of the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers and has the biggest profile out of anyone who is potentially up for the Titans’ job. If anything, he may be the most vanilla, boring candidate I cover because, well, we know what we’re getting from him. He’s a professional who’s done the job before, and even though the chances are he’s not gonna lead the next big dynasty or anything, he’ll be stable and get the job done. This is one where I’m confident a big majority of people will not be too upset about the idea, but more bored with it. It’s the easy connection; he’s what everyone in the building seems to want, and he is an offensive mind, which, even though management doesn’t seem to care which side of the ball the person leans, it would probably be smart to at least think about Cam Ward’s development in this hire.

That brings the question, though, can Mike McCarthy be the man to develop Ward into a good if not great QB? Well, that’s in some ways what this article is for: I present the positives and negatives along with the coach’s background, and I let y’all choose. So, without any further interruption, this is the Mike McCarthy head coaching profile

Mike McCarthy’s background

First off, let’s take a look at his coaching background and how we got to this point. McCarthy got his start all the way back in the ripe year of 1987 as a grad assistant at a small college called Fort Hays State. After spending two years there, McCarthy went on to be a grad assistant at Pitt from 1989 to 1991 and was then promoted to receivers coach in 1992. After his stint at Pitt, McCarthy was then hired to be the Offensive quality control coach for the Kansas City Chiefs in 1993 and 1994, then was promoted to be the quarterbacks coach from 1995-1998.

He left for the same position with the Packers for just the 1999 season because after this, he got a huge job. The New Orleans Saints hired Mike McCarthy as their next Offensive Coordinator, where he would stay for the same time as the first term for President George Bush (2000-2004). His offenses in New Orleans ranked 10th, 13th, 3rd, and 14th, and the year after he left, the offense ranked 30th. He went on to leave his job with the Saints to work with the San Francisco 49ers for the 2005 season, where his offense ranked the worst it had been at 30th in the league, a down year, but it didn’t stop his next move.

In 2006, the Green Bay Packers decided to hire Mike McCarthy as their next head coach, and he would stay there until 2018. I’ll cover most of his stuff here in the positive and negative sections of this article. All I’ll say here is, he won a Super Bowl with the Packers, and exited unceremoniously.

After his years with the Green Bay Packers, he took a year off from the game to learn the analytical side of the game. After that year off, Jerry Jones offered him the head coaching job with the Dallas Cowboys, which he took. He stayed there until 2024, where he had three 12-win seasons and then caught beef with Jerry Jones thanks to a contract dispute, which led to them parting ways after the 2024 season. He did well enough in Dallas to the point where there are many teams that are willing to give McCarthy one last chance at a head coaching job, and that comes with a lot of positives.

Mike McCarthy’s positives

Mike McCarthy doesn’t really have the most flashy or exciting positives of all the head coaching candidates, but they’re very important for the next Titans coach. The first thing, and the thing that makes him a favorite for the job, is the stability he brings alongside the experience with two, let’s just say, different organizations. Love or hate the man, he has a lot of experience, and not in the Robert Saleh or Matt Nagy way, where they both had experience, but not good experience.

With McCarthy, he has multiple winning seasons and has been as consistent as they come. When he was in Green Bay, even if they had some down years, the team was usually pretty competitive as a whole, and he would get the most out of his offense every year. He went to the Cowboys, and similar things continued where (after an injury-riddled year one) he had three 12-win seasons in a row, and when Cooper Rush had to go in, the team stayed pretty competitive overall. Think about that, Mike McCarthy had a competitive season last year, with Cooper Rush starting half of the Cowboys’ games. That is something we’ve wanted since Mike Vrabel left, a coach who can keep our team consistently competitive.

Another big positive that comes from the McCarthy hire is his offensive mind. Again, like I’ve said in the past, even though I lean toward an offensive mind, I really don’t care who the coach is, and what background he has, as long as he’s a strong, culture-building coach, I’m good with it. McCarthy, though, is one of the people who makes me want an offensive mind a lot more than I probably should. In his years as a head coach in the NFL, his offenses were top 10 in the league 9 times in his 17 seasons. The point is, none of his offenses were truly terrible, and he was usually a competent play caller.

The last thing I’ll say actually isn’t about something he does when he’s with the team, but instead about something that happens with his teams once he is gone. Look, I know this isn’t the most amazing point for a head coach, but whenever you look at the teams he’s gone to, they end up having a similar pattern. McCarthy comes in, he does really well, stables the ship, consistently makes the playoffs, and after a couple of years, the organization finally decides that they need to maximize their ceiling, so this leads to McCarthys firing/retirement and then the organization has replaced him with a higher ceiling guy that was ten times better than he was (ie Matt LaFleur and Brian Schottenheimer).

The point is, hire McCarthy now, and maybe get a great offensive mind later, because now we know what to look for in a great head coach. Now, obviously, this isn’t an exact science or anything, I mean, the Cowboys kind of lucked into Schottenheimer in some ways, and the Packers are one of the better-run organizations in the NFL. Still, though, bringing in McCarthy could help the front office in the next head coaching cycle, and it could be a teaching experience in what to look for in a new, more youthful head coach of this team.

It’s a game of patience with McCarthy, you bring him in to stable the ship, then you’re more confident when seeing a graphic about the Titans hiring a Declan Doyle (28 year old Chicago Bears Offensive Coordinator) or a Davis Webb (Denver Broncos Passing Game Coordinator), or heck, maybe even Grant Udinski is still available then (Jacksonville Jaguars Offensive Coordinator), credit to Connor Orr for mentioning these guys at the end of his article on Titans head coaching candidates. Again, McCarthy might not be flashy, but he may very well be your safest chance for your organization to become relevant once more.

Negatives of Mike McCarthy

Now, even with McCarthy’s proposed stability and a hopeful future, he still has some red flags that need to be addressed. The first thing I’ll mention is probably the most obvious negative with McCarthy, and that’s Father Time itself. Look, there’s no secret that McCarthy is on the older side for a head coach. At 62 years old, it’s easy to think that Mike McCarthy might not be around too much longer, and that doesn’t give him too much time to truly build a culture with the Titans.

Personally, it would shock me if he made it past six seasons with the Titans if he were to land the job. This age can also lead to some feelings of laziness when it comes to the dedication he has to the job. His age and the way that he acts make me curious if he even has the fire needed to get this organization back on track. Even then, though, when I see a guy like Jon Gruden (who I will not cover unless he is hired or even interviewed), I know that if he were to get the job, he is, at the very least, gonna bring some fire to this team that desperately needs it. I worry about that with the McCarthy route because he doesn’t come off as a motivated guy, and no, I’m not trying to confirm the thoughts of a radio host who says no one is interested in McCarthy because he’s overweight, I think Andy Reid comes off as completely motivated and he seems like he has a fire, and I just don’t feel that way about McCarthy.

The next thing that I think is worth mentioning is his clock management skills. This is something that has consistently popped up in McCarthy’s career and is something we know we’re gonna get if he ends up being the guy the Titans choose. Not too many specific examples come to mind, but there is one very specific example that still haunts Dallas Cowboys fans to this day, that being against the San Francisco 49ers in the 2021 playoffs, where the Cowboys looked like they were driving their way into a great comeback and then McCarthy and Co. call a QB draw at the end of the game, don’t get the snap off, and their season was over just like that. That’s the type of stuff that bad coaches do with clock management, and it makes me worried that he’s gonna do that stuff with us and not have the talent to back it up. Now, he could have very easily learned from his clock management mistakes of the past, but chances are, if he’s getting a third chance, he probably hasn’t learned from that mistake.

The last thing I’ll mention is the discipline that his teams have had. When he was with the Cowboys, his teams ranked 11th, 1st, 9th, 3rd, and 4th in most penalties during the season. His teams consistently ranked at the top in the absolute worst way when it came to penalties. I mean, the best they ranked in his tenure was 11th, for context, in the best of the Vrabel years, his teams never ranked that high. I try not to talk about that era too much anymore, but it’s something worth mentioning. The worry is, usually, teams that are disciplined usually give the sign of a good head coach, and McCarthy just never had a disciplined team in his last few years as a head coach. Even with McCarthy’s positives, we still know what we’re getting, and some of the negatives will start to annoy us over time. It’s happened with him everywhere else.

How likely is McCarthy to get hired?

You know this is a little weird right now. When I first started writing this, I was gonna very confidently gonna put down that McCarthy was the easy favorite for this head coaching job. Now, though, I have no idea what to think. I know Connor Orr said that McCarthy was seen as the frontrunner in building for the job, but then Schefter went on 104.5 The Zone, and he said almost everybody that has been connected to the job, except McCarthy.

Do I still think that McCarthy is the favorite to land this job? Yes, but I’m not as confident as I was before writing this. Now, that goes from me being confident enough to tell someone to bet on it, to being still confident, but not enough to put money on it. How would I feel about the Titans making this hire? Well, I would really like it. The Titans have already been bad enough to the point where I would love to get a dude who’s made the playoffs and be ok with not having as much success, especially if it does lead to the Titans getting a great offensive mind along the lines of Webb, Doyle, Udinski, Scheelhaase (LA Rams passing game coordinator), or some other offensive mind we don’t even know about yet. That would set up our future very well, and it would do absolute wonders for the future of the team.

On Cam Ward and the next head coach

There was some buzz this week after Cam Ward was asked if he wanted to be involved in selecting the next head coach for the Tennessee Titans. Here was his response:

Cam Ward wants to meet all the #Titans coaching candidates and he’s spoken with Mike Borgonzi and Chad Brinker about it. pic.twitter.com/t3SB57RLyl

I didn’t have a problem with his answer at all. There was nowhere in there where he said he wanted to pick the next head coach. All he said was that he wants to meet everyone they bring in and have a conversation with them. That sounds perfectly reasonable.

If I were Chad Brinker and Mike Borgonzi, I would have each candidate sit down with Ward and let them interview each other. Watch how they interact with each other. Of course, how the new coach and Ward get along is not the only thing that matters, but it is probably the most important aspect.

The quickest way for this team to be relevant again is for them to nail this head coaching hire. The right guy can come in here, maximize what they have in Ward, and build the right culture. If that happens, the turnaround can happen pretty quickly:

The Patriots were 4-13 last season.
Mike Vrabel is 11-3.

The Jaguars were 4-13 last season.
Liam Coen is 10-4.

The Bears were 5-12 last season.
Ben Johnson is 10-4.

The most important position in the NFL?
Head Coach.

What level of faith do you have in Chad Brinker and Mike Borgonzi to get it right?

Cedric Gray out for Titans vs. Chiefs

gettyimages-2239794064.jpg

Tennessee Titans linebacker Cedric Gray will miss Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs due to a concussion. Gray did get back on the practice field in a limited capacity today, so it does seem like he is progressing through the protocol. That should give him a chance to be back for next week’s game against the New Orleans Saints.

Femi Oladejo returned to practice this week, but he will also be out against the Chiefs. Hopefully, he will also be back next week. Oladejo has a ton of potential, but is still very raw. He needs all of the reps he can get before next year.

Bryce Oliver is the only other player who was ruled out.

The Titans have five players listed as questionable, including Arden Key, who just popped up on the injury report today with an illness. I guess he didn’t adjust his immune system defense.

For the Chiefs, Rashee Rice will miss Sunday due to a concussion.

Here is the full injury report for both teams:
