Interview with the Enemy: Atlanta Falcons

gettyimages-2184036418.jpg

The New Orleans Saints will return from their bye week to face the rival Atlanta Falcons at Caesars Superdome in Week 12 of the 2025 NFL season. To break it down, Saivion Mixson of The Falcoholic joins us to preview Sunday afternoon’s matchup.

imagn-24730486.jpg

NJ: With Michael Penix Jr. expected to miss the rest of the season with a knee injury, how much of a hit do you expect the offense to take with Kirk Cousins as the starter?

SM: As much as I would love to say the Falcons won’t be that much worse on offense, especially given the up-and-down nature with Penix at the helm, it’s probably going to be a substantial hit. In Kirk’s lone start against the Miami Dolphins in week 7, with a defense that came into the week dead last in EPA per dropback, Cousins went 21-of-31 for 173 yards with 102 of those yards coming after the Dolphins went up 24-3 late in the third quarter when the game felt more than out of reach. This isn’t the same Cousins the Falcons saw before his Achilles injury in 2023; his arm doesn’t have enough juice to attack the outer parts of the field consistently, and I could see the Saints dare him to make some tight window throws, especially without the safety net that is Drake London (out with a PCL sprain).

NJ: What has been Atlanta’s biggest weakness during this five-game losing streak?

SM: The most frustrating part about this question is that there is no one thing. Through the losing streak, Atlanta has done enough to win ball games, and against some good competition. But the most glaring weakness has to be the lack of consistency on the offensive side of the ball. Since the start of the losing streak, the Falcons have punted on 23 of their drives, which is third-worst in that span behind only the Houston Texans and Denver Broncos (who are somehow 5-0 in that span) and dead last in 3rd-down conversion percentage (23.5%). The offense doesn’t have a real identity. There’s nothing they can reliably lean on in key moments, and that shows up whenever they need to keep the drive alive.

NJ: Which positional matchup do you think will be the most critical in determining the winner of Sunday’s game?

SM: The most critical matchup of the game may also be the game’s most exciting. Saints have done well at keeping pressure off the quarterback, allowing only 23 sacks (14th-best), 18 QB hits (4th-best), and an 18.4% pressure rate (12th-best), according to Stathead.com. The Falcons have been able to disrupt some of the league’s better quarterbacks, including Drake Maye, Josh Allen, and Daniel Jones, with their pass rush. What will be the Saints’ plan against Atlanta’s newfound pass rush will go a long way in deciding how effective Tyler Shough and this Saints offense will be.

NJ: Who is one under-the-radar Falcons player that has stood out and might be a difference-maker against the Saints?

SM: A player that Saints fans may not know too well, but may be very cognizant of on Sunday, is Divine Deablo. Deablo has been out for the entirety of this losing streak, and the Falcons’ defense, while still showing flashes, lost some of its teeth because of it. With Deablo in the lineup, the Falcons’ defense was 5th in EPA/play due to Deablo’s ability to cover and rush the passer from the inside linebacker spot. His interchangeability with fellow inside linebacker Kaden Elliss gave the Falcons’ defense a wrinkle it has been sorely lacking with his departure.

NJ: According to FanDuel Sportsbook, the Saints (-134) are currently 1.5-point favorites over the Falcons (+114) in Sunday’s matchup; what is your final score prediction?

SM: If there were ever a week to pick the Saints over the Falcons, it feels like this one… But I can’t bring myself to do it. I’ll take Atlanta in a game that probably won’t be pretty from start to finish: Falcons 20, Saints 19.

Thank you again to Saivion Mixson for joining us to preview this week’s matchup! You can check out the rest of his work here.

Saints release kicker Blake Grupe and sign former LSU Tiger Cade York to the practice squad

1883328615.jpg

In a move that is not so surprising, the New Orleans Saints have released kicker Blake Grupe, who has struggled tremendously this season, missing a total of eight kicks through 11 games including two on Sunday afternoon against the Atlanta Falcons.

Cade York in for the #Saints to the practice squad. Blake Grupe is being released, source says. https://t.co/EGaIdYH36c

— Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo) November 25, 2025

The 27-year-old was signed by Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2023, beating out veteran kicker Wil Lutz for the starting position. Unfortunately, this season saw Grupe fall to the bottom of the stat list. He has made just 73.9% of his kicks, ranking 36th in the league, although he has been perfect on extra points.

In a corresponding move, the Saints are signing former LSU Tigers kicker Cade York, per a report by Nick Underhill. York was most recently with the Cincinnati Bengals. He will join kicker Charlie Smyth, who was signed through the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program (IPPP) in 2024, on the Saints practice squad.

Ups and downs from Saints vs. Falcons

imagn-27666211.jpg

The New Orleans Saints dropped to 2-9 on the season after a disappointing loss to NFC South rival Atlanta Falcons. The Saints’ offense totaled just three points on the day, with only the defense finding the end zone for the black and gold. New Orleans will now travel to Miami to take on the 4-7 Dolphins.

Up: RB Devin Neal

gettyimages-2248130327.jpg

The Saints’ running back room has been thin since the injury to Kendre Miller against the Chicago Bears, and now an injury to star running back Alvin Kamara only makes things more concerning. Kamara suffered a knee injury against the Falcons, leaving in the first half and not returning for the remainder of the game. Rookie running back Devin Neal took over the majority of carries for the Saints’ offense.

Neal didn’t have a great day on the ground, finishing with just 18 yards on seven attempts, but he made an impact as a receiver. The sixth round pick caught 5 passes for 43 yards on 7 targets. It’s not only his ability to make plays with that ball that makes him stand out, however. The rookie running back has been a pleasant surprise in pass protection and isn’t afraid to take on a block. There have been some instances of Neal getting beaten, but he has earned the opportunity for more playtime.

Down: HC Kellen Moore

imagn-27666373.jpg

Despite their win against the Carolina Panthers in Week 10, the perception of Kellen Moore’s playcalling remained the same: points were left on the table. There have been too many instances of the Saints’ offense being within three yards of the goalline and ending the drive with no points or settling for a chipshot field goal.

The Saints’ offense started the day badly, fumbling a handoff on their second offensive snap. On their next drive, wide receiver Mason Tipton would take a kick return 75 yards and set the offense up in perfect scoring position. Despite starting the drive at the nine-yard line, the New Orleans offense would lose yards and eventually have to settle for a field goal attempt that kicker Blake Grupe would miss. The Saints would have another missed field goal attempt later in the game, along with two instances of turnovers on downs.

Kellen Moore will get another year as head coach for the Saints, and I believe that is the right move. But he is running one of the worst offenses in the league up to this point of the season, and there’s a lot that could be said about his decision-making and play-calling.

Down: K Blake Grupe

imagn-27666215.jpg

By the time this goes up, there’s likely been some sort of announcement on the Saints’ decision with kicker Blake Grupe. The third-year kicker missed two kicks on Sunday, with neither being very demanding for an NFL kicker (38 and 47 yards). With his misses in the loss, Grupe has fallen to the 39th-ranked FG% in the NFL, despite only 31 other NFL teams.

The Saints are bringing in a couple of kickers for tryouts this week, including controversial pick Justin Tucker. It’s clear the leeway Grupe was once given has finally been cut short, and he truthfully shouldn’t be the starter for New Orleans going forward. Rather, it’s one of the kickers the team brought in for a tryout, or second-year kicker Charlie Smyth, who’s been stashed on the practice squad. The black and gold need to make a change at kicker.

If Saints win/lose vs Dolphins

imagn-27666134.jpg

The New Orleans Saints are hitting the road in Week 13 as they visit the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. Here’s a look at what either outcome could potentially mean for the black and gold.

If the Saints win

A victory on Sunday would mean an offensive bounce-back after the Saints struggled at times to move the ball or take advantage of scoring positions last week against Atlanta.

A fair share of the season’s nine defeats could’ve gone either way. Many may expect Sunday to be a similar story. If the game is close down the stretch, it gives Tyler Shough another chance to stamp a strong impression as he continues his rookie campaign.

Moreover, a win against a turnover-prone Miami team could be strongly helped by the defense. Regardless, a win would put New Orleans at 2-1 in their last three games before they turn back to NFC South competition.

If the Saints lose

A loss drops the black and gold to 2-10, with many fans taking the improved draft position as a silver lining.

Defeat hasn’t often come as a big surprise throughout the season, but there’s always plenty to look out for beyond the scoreboard. Regardless of the outcome, limiting penalties and unforced errors are among the things Saints fans will be hoping to see, as well as strong play from the rookie quarterback.

How do you feel ahead of Sunday? Can the Saints grab a first non-divisional road win against Miami? Let us know in the comments!

Saints Rookie Impact Report: Week 13

imagn-27666626.jpg

Let’s start the breakdown for the New Orleans Saints Sunday matchup against the Miami Dolphins!

OT Kelvin Banks

Contrary to many social media posts, Kelvin Banks did well against the Falcons. It was always going to be a challenging game, and without Taliese Fuaga on the other side, Banks was really the only great offensive lineman the Saints had. Like last week, New Orleans’ opponents, the Miami Dolphins, are going to have a good pass rush, and Banks will be tested.

QB Tyler Shough

Last week, Shough had a very similar performance to the one against the Rams. It wasn’t excellent, but it wasn’t bad either. Still, if the playcalling had been better, we would have talked about this performance differently. Now, against the Dolphins, hopefully, the addition of Fuaga and potentially Kellen Moore putting more trust in his QB, Shough could have a better performance. The main issue to watch out for is if Chris Olave is out with his injury, because that would get scary for Sunday.

S Jonas Sanker

Jonas Sanker is going to have a massive job on Sunday. Tackling is extremely important against the Dolphins because their players will dominate if they can run freely. The good news is Sanker won’t have to worry about the deep ball as much (but still might happen) due to Tua Tagovailoa’s lack of arm strenght. Also, Tagovailoa is prone to turning the ball over.

CB Quincy Riley

Speaking of players that can take advantage of risky throws, Quincy Riley can get an interception in this game. Obviously, first focusing on coverage is essential, but Riley can be a real ball hawk in this defense, and with how Brandon Staley is having his players play, I could see it happening.

RB Devin Neal

After Kelvin Banks and Tyler Shough, Devin Neal is going to have the most pressure in this game. If he does play (Neal is on the practice injury report right now), Neal will have a massive day. It looks like Alvin Kamara is going to be out with his knee injury, and the Dolphins’ run defense is near league-worst.
