TNF: Jets vs Patriots discussion

imagn-24277079.jpg

Thursday Night Football, Week 11. Tonight the New England Patriots host the New York Jets. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:15 pm EST.

The 8-2 New England Patriots come into this game as hot as any team in the NFL, riding a seven game winning streak. They sit in first place in the AFC East. The Patriots have benefitted from a weak schedule, but they have also beaten some good teams. They beat the Buffalo Bills in Buffalo in early October, and last week the Patriots took down the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Tampa. The Patriots are a tough matchup for the Jets. They boast the NFL’s top run defense in terms of rushing yards allowed. That does not bode well for the Jets offense, which depends heavily on the run game. If Justin Fields can’t get the passing game going without Garrett Wilson, this could be a very long night for the Jets.

The 2-7 New York Jets sit in last place in the AFC East. They have shown some life of late, winning their last two games after starting the season 0-7. Those two wins came against the Cincinnati Bengals and the Cleveland Browns, two of the lesser teams in the NFL. Tonight represents a much more difficult challenge for the Jets, on the road against a team with the best record in the NFL. Patriots quarterback Drake Maye has been playing at an MVP level, and he will give the depleted Jets defense all they can handle. It will probably be too much to ask for the last place Jets to beat the first place Patriots on the road. Hopefully the Jets can at least show some progress and keep the game competitive. If they can keep it close, who knows, it’s always possible to get a break or two down the stretch and steal a win.

It’s the Jets and the Patriots in an AFC East grudge match tonight on Thursday Night Football. Enjoy the game everybody.

Jets manhandled by Patriots on Thursday Night Football

imagn-27582061.jpg

The Jets lost to the Patriots on Thursday Night Football 27-14.

I think we all need to acknowledge is the quality difference in these teams and the difference in where these teams are in their respective cycles.

You might say those are excuses. I’d say calling the Patriots a better team is hardly excuse-making. It’s fact. This season New England is one of the best teams in the league. The Jets are at the bottom. The Patriots are where the Jets hope to be in a couple of seasons. They have successfully executed a rebuild.

From a Jets perspective, it’s frustrating to watch the Patriots fall from a dynasty to the bottom of the league and then bounce back to the top of the league in a couple of years in a span when the Jets have been at the bottom of the league the entire time.

If the Jets use their resources wisely, they can end up on New England’s level in just a couple of seasons.

That opportunity is the result of two recent trades. And make no mistake. Those trades made an already bad team worse in the short run.

After the Jets beat Cleveland without Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams last week, I guess it could have been tempting to suggest that the Jets lost talent but maybe weren’t worse off as a team. Most people would have understood even in the aftermath of a victory that this was a stretch. This game erased all doubt.

This was a Jets defense that got completely exposed, and the key players were missed. The cornerback group simply did not hold up against New England’s receivers. The defensive line didn’t generate a whole lot of pressure. Faced with a young quarterback who seems to be emerging as a star, that is a bad combination.

It’s frustrating to see the replacements not step up. Brandon Stephens and Jarvis Brownlee Jr. have shown good things lately. Will McDonald was coming off a 4 sack game. Jermaine Johnson is a quality player. Life is just a lot tougher without Sauce and Quinnen.

Life is tough in general with the offense and the quarterback the Jets have. The game started promisingly for the Jets as the team engineered a 14 play touchdown drive to get things started. It was an excellent script by Tanner Engstrand, mixing designed quarterback runs with straight runs and a gadget play or two. Just as significant, Justin Fields was decisive. A talented runner who is frequently too hesitant to run, Fields took off if he saw a lane. The results were good.

Unfortunately, a good script can only take you so far. As the Jets moved to their conventional offense, things stalled. This is a team lacking playmaking talent, particularly with Garrett Wilson out. It can’t afford to get behind the sticks. Justin Fields missing throws or Adonai Mitchell letting good throws go through his hands are mistakes this team can’t have.

In the end the results here were not exactly surprising. The Patriots are a good team. The Jets are a bad team.

The Patriots have good talent. The Jets were already short on it and sold off their elite players. Those deals might pay dividends in the long run, but in the here and now they surely hurt.

Unpredictable though Thursday night divisional games might be, all of these factors led to a very predictable result.

New York Jets Week 11 Anti-Game Ball: Lots of culprits in Thursday night loss to Patriots

imagn-27582172.jpg

The Jets lost to the Patriots on Thursday Night Football. Let’s hand out some anti-game balls to the players who didn’t deliver.

Adonai Mitchell: Garrett Wilson’s injury provided an opportunity for a young wde receiver like Mitchell to step into the lineup and make an impression. Mitchell did. Unfortunately it was the wrong sort of impression. He let two well thrown passes go through his hands that would have resulted in big plays. The Jets scored a touchdown after the second one so I guess it didn’t hurt the team all that much. It certainly hurt Mitchell’s hopes of showing this team he can be a reliable target, though.

Jarvis Brownlee Jr: Brownlee was a mess in this game. He was beaten in coverage. He committed penalties. He even failed to do something as basic as touching a receiver down after a catch, resulting in a bigger gain. The acquisition of Brownlee was crowned as a steal when the cornerback had a strong first couple of games in green and white, but he now has back to back very poor performances.

Brandon Stephens: I don’t want to get on Stephens too much because he had been playing legitimately excellent football for a long stretch heading into this game, but Week 11 was not kind to him. He was beaten one on one over and over for important receptions.

Will McDonald/Jermaine Johnson: The Jets had coverage issues in this game, but the pass rush didn’t make their lives easier. A week after a four sack outburst, McDonald was nowhere to be seen. Johnson did have a sack, but that came when he got a one on one against a tight end. He wasn’t generating much pressure otherwise. Pass coverage for the Jets is going to struggle if these two can’t do better.

Jets Zone Coverage: It will be interesting to see what the film shows, but it looked like the Jets were busting pretty basic coverages all night. Of course Brownlee and Stephens failing to hold up one on one was a big problem, but it also seemed like there were issues across the defense when the Jets moved to zone.

Justin Fields: This game was on the upper half of Fields statistical performance this season, which speaks volumes. I mean he was 15 of 26 for 116 yards. Of course the numbers would have looked better had Mitchell not let him down, but Fields also missed his share of layups. If you watched the game, analyst Kirk Herbstreit said it all when he called Fields scrambling the only passing play the Jets can depend upon. I don’t think things would get much better if Tyrod Taylor went into the lineup, but we are at the point where Fields’ play might justify a change anyway.

New York Jets owner Woody Johnson wants to get rid of NFLPA report cards

imagn-25278412.jpg

In 2023, the NFL Player’s Association released their first ownership grades, giving a letter assessment to NFL owners about their treatment of players in multiple categories such as food, number of trainers, how they treat families on game day, and more. In the two-plus years since, NFL owners who have received poor grades in the rankings have either chosen to get better and raise their grades or chosen to complain and press the union to suppress the grades.

New York Jets owner Woody Johnson is apparently one of the owners trying to suppress the grades.

In March 2025 at the NFL league meeting, Johnson told the media that the survey was “totally bogus” and seemed to indicate that it violated the league’s collective bargaining agreement with the NFLPA.

Per a report from ESPN’s Don Van Natta and Seth Wickersham, Johnson said he took issue with “how they collected the information [and] who they collected it from. [It] was supposed to be according to the agreement we have with the league. It’s supposed to be a process [where] we have representatives and they have representatives, so we know that it’s an honest survey.

“And that was violated, in my opinion. I’m going to leave it at that, but I think there are a lot of owners that looked at that survey and said this is not fair, it’s not balanced, it’s not every player, it’s not even representative of the players.”

A separate owner said the only owners that care about the NFLPA report cards are the ones who received subpar grades. ZING!

In 2025, Johnson received an F from his players — the only NFL owner to earn the lowest possible grade. Owners from the Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers managed at least a D- with the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots earned a D.

The Jets organization came in 29th of 32 teas according to the NFLPA metrics. Not only is Johnson trying to block the release of the grades, Jets players think he actively has tried to make conditions worse since the NFLPA grades first came out as a retaliatory measure.

For example, after receiving low grades for their food program last year, players felt the team cut the food budget and did not retain their long-time dietitian, who was previously their highest-rated staff member.

If that’s the case, it looks like the relationship might not get better any time soon.

SNF: Eagles vs Lions Game Thread

imagn-19032260.jpg

Sunday Night Football, Week 11. Tonight the Philadelphia Eagles host the Detroit Lions. The game is scheduled to kickoff at 8:15 p.m. EST.

The Detroit Lions come into this game with a 6-3 record, good for 2nd place in the NFC North, half a game behind the Chicago Bears. The Lions are coming off a 44 – 22 domination of the Washington Commanders last week, but they have lost two of their last four games.

The Eagles come into this game with a 7-2 record, good for 1st place in the NFC East. The Eagles have won three straight games. Last week they squeaked by the Green Bay Packers, 10 – 7. The Eagles have not looked much like the dominant team they were a year ago. They rank just 23rd in the NFL in yards gained and 18th in yards allowed. The one thing that has kept the Eagles winning games has been turnovers. They have the fewest offensive turnovers in the NFL and they have lost the turnover battle just once this season. That’s a good way to win games.

It’s the Eagles and the Lions tonight on Monday Night Football. Enjoy the game everyone.

2026 NFL Draft Order: Jets stay put after loss to Patriots

imagn-27584008.jpg

The New York Jets lost in Week 11 to the New England Patriots. In a lost season, fans frequently look to positioning in the NFL Draft as a silver lining when a team loses a game. The Jets entered Week 11 holding the fifth slot in the Draft. As we approach Monday Night Football, the Jets remain in that fifth slot.

  1. Titans 1-9
  2. Giants 2-9
  3. Browns 2-8
  4. Saints 2-8
  5. Jets 2-8
  6. Raiders 2-7
  7. Commanders 3-8
  8. Falcons (pick traded to Rams) 3-7
  9. Bengals 3-7
  10. Cardinals 3-7
  11. Dolphins 4-7
  12. Cowboys 3-5-1
  13. Vikings 4-6
  14. Ravens 5-5
  15. Chiefs 5-5
  16. Texans 5-5
  17. Panthers 6-5
  18. Lions 6-4

The order of picks 19 through 32 is determined by Playoff results. The Jets also have the first round pick of the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts currently hold the third seed in the AFC Playoff race, which would put their pick somewhere between 21 and 32.

The Jets are behind the Browns and Saints due to the strength of schedule tiebreaker.

MNF: Raiders vs Cowboys Game Thread

imagn-17230660.jpg

Monday Night Football, Week 11. Tonight the Las Vegas Raiders host the Dallas Cowboys. The game is scheduled to kickoff at 8:15 p.m. EST.

The Raiders come into this game with a 2-7 record, good for last place in the AFC West. They have lost three straight games and seven of their last eight. The Raiders’ only win in their last eight games came against the lowly Tennessee Titans. Geno Smith has had a down year and the running game has been among the worst in the NFL, making for a woeful Raiders offense. There’s not much reason for hope this season for this team, as they continue to be in the running for the first overall pick in the 2026 NFL draft.

The Cowboys come into this game with a 3-5-1 record, good for second place in the terrible NFC East. They have lost three of their last four games. The Cowboys boast the league’s third best offense in terms of yards gained and points scored this season. Unfortunately, as good as the Cowboys have been on offense, they’ve been awful on defense. The Cowboys rank 31st in the NFL in yards allowed and points allowed. They have been equally inept stopping the pass and stopping the run.

This is not the quality of game the NFL hopes for on their flagship Monday Night product, but it’s what they’ve got.

It’s the Raiders and the Cowboys tonight on Monday Night Football. Enjoy the game everyone.

NY Jets: Was benching Justin Fields the right move?

gettyimages-2246618507.jpg

There’s no secret the New York Jets have been struggling this season. After all, a 2-8 record speaks for itself. Under center of it (both figurately and literally) has been quarterback Justin Fields. And ahead of the team’s Week 12 matchup, head coach Aaron Glenn had finally seen enough and decided to pull the switch, benching Fields for veteran Tyrod Taylor. Yet, was it the right move for the NY Jets?

NY Jets: Was Benching Justin Fields the Right Move?

When the NY Jets signed Justin Fields to a two-year, $40 million contract this offseason, there were mixed feelings. Some thought that the Jets should have avoided targeting Fields as their next quarterback. Meanwhile, others were optimistic that a change in scenery could bring out the best in the Ohio State product.

However, the product on the field has left a lot to be desired.

Through 11 games this season with the Jets, Fields threw for 1259 yards and had seven touchdowns to one interception. He also added 383 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. While he protected the football, the unit wasn’t going anywhere with it, either. With Fields as the starter, the Jets’ 20.9 points per game ranked 25th in league.

It’s easy to point at the lack of receiving weapons the Jets have this season as a reason for Fields’ failures on the field. And, at times, some of the play-calling has done him no favors. However, there have been some serious problems with Fields under center.

Fields’ Struggles Lead to Benching

To start, his location accuracy is extremely inconsistent. He has an extremely hard time hitting receivers in stride and on the correct shoulder. Here, he makes an easy throw look difficult. While the ball was dropped by the receiver, the pass couldn’t have been put in a worse spot for AD Mitchell to make a play on the ball.

Justin Fields can't hit it.

A big reason I had the #Jets taking Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza in my latest mock draft. https://t.co/XRXHo5LwfW pic.twitter.com/8HvS9IQOMc

— ctc1_scouting (@_cutcall) November 14, 2025

While in a one-off situation, this isn’t an end of the world type of play. However, it has consistently happened to the Jets with Fields under center.

The second issue that has arisen is that the quarterback is extremely hesitant – to do anything.

On more than on occasion, Fields is given a clean pocket to work with. Yet instead of making a play, he waits. Then, he waits some more; and continues to wait until any passing window has closed before scrambling or making a bad throw.

Sometimes, this leads to sacks (and fumbles – like the case against Miami). Other times, it leads to scrambles because Fields will not throw the ball downfield.

It shows Fields’ inability to read the field (no pun intended). And, that was the case in his lone interception of the season against Cleveland.

Justin Fields plays the most like a rookie of any Year 5 QB I've seen

Watch him stare down Garrett Wilson this entire rep without once even peeking to check where the safety is

I don't get how the Jets justify continuing to put him out there, it's unfair to the rest of the O pic.twitter.com/H2g9dckghh

— Michael Nania (@Michael_Nania) November 11, 2025

There’s a reason why the Fields has four games with less than 60 passing yards. And in today’s NFL, that’s unacceptable by any standard.

What’s the Verdict?

While some may believe that Fields wasn’t given a fair shot as the starting quarterback of the NY Jets, at some point, you are what you are.

Justin Fields is an incredible runner. And, when he has confidence, can make good throws down the field. However, those moments are too far and few between for any franchise to seriously consider him a starting quarterback going forward.

Fans who may want the NY Jets to tank or get a higher pick may be disappointed with the team’s benching of Fields. Yet overall, it was the right decision from Aaron Glenn and the coaching staff to bench him for the remainder of the 2025 season.

Scouting Jets wide receiver/return specialist Isaiah Williams

imagn-27425784.jpg

The Jets recently added wide receiver and return specialist Isaiah Williams to their active roster and he has already played in eight games for the team. Today we break Williams down in detail.

The 24-year old Williams is listed at 5’10” and 185 pounds and was undrafted out of Illinois last April. Williams spent time with the Lions and Bengals before joining the Jets.

Background

Williams was a high school quarterback but struggled to find a college who would take a chance on him as a quarterback because he was considered too short. However, Illinois opted to give him a shot so he went there.

As a freshman, he played in four games. In limited action at the quarterback position, he rushed nine times for 16 yards and completed three of 10 passes for 38 yards and an interception. At the end of the season, he played wide receiver for the first time ever in Illinois’ bowl game and caught three passes for nine yards.

In 2020, Williams saw action in six games, getting a chance to start his first ever game against Rutgers and setting a school record for rushing yards by a quarterback as he racked up 192 yards in a comeback win.

Later in the year, he had another 100-yard rushing performance but he struggled as a passer all year. He ended the season with 393 passing yards and four touchdowns in six games with two interceptions. However, he completed just 41 percent of his passes. He did rush for 389 and a touchdown, though.

Unsurprisingly, Illinois were able to coerce him into making the switch to wide receiver in 2021 and he did well, with 47 catches. He scored six touchdowns, including two on the ground.

Williams made strides in 2022 as he caught 82 passes for 715 yards and five touchdowns to earn an all-Big Ten honorable mention.

In 2023, he had a thousand-yard season as he caught 82 passes again to lead the Big Ten. Williams again had five touchdown catches and added a touchdown pass on a gadget play. He was named an all-Big Ten first teamer and also an honorable mention as a kick returner.

Widely considered a possible day three pick, Williams was not selected in the 2024 draft but signed for the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent and made their roster out of training camp. However, he played just two games for them, catching two short passes, and was released in November.

The Bengals claimed Williams off waivers and he played a role for them on special teams for the rest of the 2024 season but was unable to make their roster out of training camp in August. He was briefly re-signed to the Bengals’ practice squad but the Jets poached him after Xavier Gipson’s fumble in the home opener.

Three weeks later, Williams was released, but re-signed to the practice squad and has since been signed to the active roster again.

Let’s move onto some more in-depth analysis of what Williams brings to the table as a player, based on extensive research and film study.

Measurables/Athleticism

Williams was too small for the quarterback position but he’s also pretty small for a wide receiver with short arms and a small catch radius.

His quickness and burst are evident on film but he hurt his draft stock when he only ran a 4.6 in his combine workout. Then, when he tried to improve on his numbers at his pro day, he added five inches to his broad jump but all of the other numbers were the same or worse.

Despite the slow 40 time, Williams’ explosiveness and agility numbers were excellent. He also managed 17 bench press reps, which is solid for his size.

Usage

Having moved to wide receiver, Williams played primarily in the slot, where he lined up over 80 percent of the time in college.

He obviously can line up outside as well and is a useful jet sweep option. With his history as a quarterback, he could also take wildcat snaps or throw the ball on a gadget play, as he did in the Jets’ game in New England.

Deep threat

In regular season and preseason action, Williams hasn’t really had a chance to prove he can be a deep threat, although he did have some decent success on downfield passes in college.

williams6.gif

Hands

Despite being quite new to the receiver position, Williams adapted well and has always had efficient pass catching numbers with a 69 percent catch rate in college. The highest number of drops he had was six, in a season where he was targeted 127 times.

However, despite again having a 70 percent catch rate, he has had a couple of drops in preseason action at the NFL level.

williams5.gif

He doesn’t have a lot of highlight reel grabs in his film, although he shows an ability to go to ground come up with low throws and showed good focus and concentration on this play.

williams9.gif

Routes

Despite only switching to wide receiver a few years ago you can tell that Williams has worked hard at incorporating some of his shiftiness into his route running.

He is effective on crossers, slants and quick out-type patterns and also works in some double-moves and whip-style routes. His releases, balance and footwork look pretty good for someone you might expect to be a novice.

williams4.gif

Red zone

Williams had 14 touchdown receptions in his college career, although many of those came from outside the red zone. Here was one of his red zone touchdowns.

williams0.gif

He is yet to score an offensive touchdown at the NFL level in regular season or preseason action but could be as much of a threat as a runner as a pass catching option.

After the catch

Williams is extremely effective after the catch, where he led the Big Ten and was 10th in the nation during his final season in college.

He has an innate knack for making the first man miss and getting his momentum going upfield quickly.

williams11.gif

He hasn’t had many chances to showcase this at the NFL level but made this nice play in preseason action.

williams3.gif

Ball security has been an issue at times, though.

Blocking

Williams will be limited by his lack of size when blocking at the NFL level but he gives a good effort and made this excellent block to set up a touchdown a few weeks ago.

williams2.gif

In college, his grades for run blocking were consistently average or below average.

Physicality

Despite a lack of size, Williams makes the effort as a blocker and finishes runs and returns aggressively when he has the ball.

His record on contested catches is pretty poor, although he showed on this play that he can go up and get a jump ball.

williams7.gif

Special Teams

Jets fans have already got a taste of Williams’ return abilities. After a few early mistakes, including a fumble, he has really settled down and is gaining in confidence, highlighted by his touchdown return in the win over the Browns. This came after he had already won an AFC special teams player of the week award.

He is more experienced with returning punts than kickoffs, and has quick feet, good balance and slipperiness.

williams1.gif

In college, Williams’ first year as a return man was underwhelming but he averaged over 11 yards per punt return in his second year. In preseason action, he averaged almost 13 yards per punt return and 27 per kickoff return.

Instincts and Intelligence

Williams made some mental errors early in his Jets career, the worst of which was when he took a fair catch inside his own five yard line. However, he has good instincts and vision as an open field runner and when finding open areas in zone coverage, perhaps being able to read coverages better than some receivers due to his quarterbacking experience.

williams8.gif

He was a three-time academic all-Big Ten selection in college.

Attitude

Williams has shown good character by bouncing back from an inauspicious start with the Jets and his work ethic has been praised by the coaching staff.

In addition, switching positions and learning a new role in a short space of time is not something everyone can do.

Williams was a two-time captain in college and was nominated for numerous awards, did plenty of community work and was a member of some advocacy groups.

On-field discipline wasn’t an issue with two penalties in his college career, although he did talk trash and get into it with defensive backs sometimes.

Injuries

Williams hasn’t missed much time during his career, but was affected by a concussion in 2022 and an abdominal issue last season.

Scheme Fit

To the extent that he has a role on offense, Williams will presumably see most of his action in the slot or in motion. He could see occasional action on jet sweeps even in weeks when he is not in the main rotation.

Clearly, the punt returner role is his for now and he will continue to get occasional kickoff return opportunities, albeit that his main role on these is as an upback and lead blocker for Kene Nwangwu, at least while he’s healthy.

Williams was a teammate of current Jet Tony Adams while in college. He also played with Khalil Herbert and Jay Tufele in Cincinnati.

Conclusions

It seemed like that Williams would just be a return specialist with the Jets and, early on, it felt like he had blown his shot at nailing down that role.

However, he surprisingly found his way into the receiver rotation for the game against Cincinnati and played his part in the Jets’ first win of the year.

The Jets are being rewarded for the patience they showed with Williams. It will be interesting to see if he can retain this role and make more contributions to establish himself as someone the team will definitely want to bring back next year.

Scouting Jets defensive tackle Mazi Smith

imagn-21446074.jpg

The Jets recently acquired defensive tackle Mazi Smith via trade and he has already played in two games for the team. Today we break Smith down in detail.

The 24-year old Smith is listed at 6’3″ and 337 pounds and was a first round pick out of Michigan in 2023. He started three games as a rookie and every game in 2024 for the Cowboys, but he fell out of the rotation this year. In all, he had 57 tackles and two sacks in 39 games in Dallas.

Background

Smith was a four-star high school recruit who headed to Michigan in 2019, although he only had three tackles and a tackle for loss in seven games during his first two seasons.

In 2021, Smith became a full-time starter and was named as an honorable mention all-Big Ten selection. He started all 14 games and had 37 tackles and four pass breakups.

He ramped up his production in 2022 to earn all-Big Ten first team honors. He ended up with 48 tackles and half a sack.

Having announced that he was to enter the 2023 draft, Smith was widely projected to go on day two, but the Cowboys drafted him in the first round with the 26th overall pick.

As a rookie, Smith played in every game, starting three, and had 13 tackles and a sack. He was also credited with three tackles for loss and three quarterback hits.

Last season, he won a starting role and started all 17 games. He ended up with 41 tackles, a sack, four tackles for loss and three quarterback hits.

Ahead of the 2025 season, some were projecting Smith to break out. However, he got hurt in camp and was still playing in the second half of preseason games as he seemed to be in danger of not making the team. He eventually did, but was a healthy scratch in the opener.

By the time Smith was included in this month’s Quinnen Williams trade, he had only played in five games off the bench, recording just three tackles.

Since arriving in New York, he has played two games with the Jets in a reserve role.

Let’s move onto some more in-depth analysis of what Smith brings to the table as a player, based on extensive research and film study.

Measurables/Athleticism

Smith has good size and excellent length but his listed weight of 337 pounds doesn’t tell the full story.

In his rookie year, he was asked to try to slim down to below 300 pounds by Dan Quinn and reportedly got close to that target weight. However, in 2024, he was asked to add 20 pounds. Then, ahead of this season he was required to shed weight again and told the media he was around 312-315 pounds.

At the scouting combine, Smith showcased his immense strength with an impressive 34 bench press reps. However, due to an injury, he didn’t do anything else and then was unable to do a full workout at his pro day. He did manage to put up a 29.5-inch vertical and 107-inch broad jump, both of which were very good for his size, which was 323 pounds at the time.

Smith’s athletic credentials were also recognized in Bruce Feldman’s notorious freaks list. He managed 22 bench press reps with 325 instead of the customary 225 on the bar and a close-grip bench of 550 pounds.

While he didn’t run a 40-yard dash or do the shuttle drills at the combine or his pro day, he apparently posted an impressive 4.41 in the short shuttle, 6.94 in the three-cone drill and a 60-yard shuttle of 11.9 seconds.

Supposedly he also posted a 44-inch vertical but that has to be a typo because his pro day vertical was below 30 inches.

Usage

Smith played plenty of reps as a pure nose tackle at Michigan but has mostly been deployed as a 4-3 tackle at the NFL level. It was only in 2024 that he has lined up regularly in the A-gap.

He has occasionally aligned himself on the outside, usually over the tackle.

Motor

Smith is a player who came into the league with a reputation as someone who has a relentless, non-stop motor, but that hasn’t necessarily translated to his pro performances. The effort level is usually there, though, and he shows good hustle when chasing plays down.

mazi11.gif

He is used to handling a starter’s workload when necessary although 46 snaps is the most he has played in an NFL game. He had one game in college where he played 61 snaps.

Pass rush

Smith came into the league with just half a sack in his college career but some experts felt he had untapped potential as a pass rusher. Dane Brugler, for example, said he showed “flashes of pass rush potential”.

With two sacks and six quarterback hits in his first two seasons, Smith had some production but has still been limited in that area.

Since he is so strong, Smith can play a role here simply by driving his man back to collapse the pocket.

mazi2.gif

This was a good rep, showing some quickness to get past the left guard. However, he hasn’t done enough of this to warrant a bigger role so far.

mazi9.gif

Run defense

The book on Smith was that run defense was his biggest strength and clearly the Cowboys hoped he would improve them in that area. He did, after all, anchor the third-best run defense in the nation when he was at Michigan.

However, this hasn’t really been the case. As he became a starter last year, the Cowboys dropped off from 15th to third-worst in the NFL in terms of yards per carry allowed. With Smith not playing a role this season they are back to 23rd in that category.

You would hope that a player with Smith’s physical ability would be able to hold up to a double-team but he hasn’t been able to do this consistently as he is often driven back off the line.

mazi1.gif

Even in one-on-one matchups, Smith’s consistency against the run has been poor with analysis site Pro Football Focus ranking him 138th out of 147 qualifiers in 2024 against the run.

mazi5_538ed5.gif

He has shown some flashes of ability, though, with 20 stops in 2024 alone and seven tackles for loss in his first two seasons. He penetrated well against a one-on-one block here.

mazi8.gif

When he can set his pad level and hold his ground against a double-team, this enables the defense to bottle up runs. He just hasn’t done this often enough.

mazi7.gif

Technique

Smith’s get-off has been criticized for not being explosive enough and his pad level can be inconsistent. He also can struggle to disengage once a blocker has control of him.

His most effective moves are when he can exploit his power and length to set himself up. He does that here to get to the quarterback.

mazi4.gif

Clearly he has been less able to rely on a pure strength advantage to win at the NFL level than he was able to in college, but the strength he has does give him a foundation to get his man off-balance when his technique is sound.

mazi3.gif

Special teams

Smith’s only special teams role in the NFL and in college has been on the kick block unit. He also rushed one punt in college. He hasn’t had any production within these roles.

Tackling

Smith hasn’t been a particularly productive tackler and will allow his man to slip away from him when trying to make a stop in the backfield at times. However, he’s strong enough to wrap up and drag down ball carriers.

He only had one forced fumble in college, with none in NFL regular season or preseason action.

mazi0.gif

Coverage

Smith has hardly ever dropped into coverage, although he has batted down some passes at the line of scrimmage while he was in college.

Instincts/Intelligence

When he was asked about some of his struggles at the pro level, Smith implied he knows he can be physically dominant, but that it was the mental side of his role that he was struggling with. This manifests in him not anticipating down blocks or displaying poor vision and awarenes.

mazi6.gif

Smith’s situation hasn’t been helped by the fact that Steve Wilks is the seventh defensive coordinator he has played for since his college career began.

Attitude/Demeanor

At Michigan, Smith was described as a quiet lead-by-example type in 2021, who became more of a vocal leader after being named as a co-captain in 2022.

However, at the NFL level, he’s been described as unmotivated and rubbed fans the wrong way by commenting that he doesn’t love football, just hitting people. He deserves credit, though, for adding and shedding weight on command multiple times.

His on-field discipline in college was good, as he didn’t have a single penalty. He also didn’t have one in his rookie year. He had four last year, though, two of which were for defensive holding. One was for unnecessary roughness, although this was just for being involved in a post-play scuffle on which four other players were also flagged.

In 2023, he was arrested for speeding and then was to be charged with a felony after police found a loaded gun in the car. However, he was able to accept a plea deal.

Injuries

Smith has had a few minor injury issues during his career, although he hasn’t missed time. He had shoulder surgery after the 2023 season, was dealing with knee tendinitis in preseason this year and had a hamstring issue during the pre-draft process. He also missed practice time after having an allergic reaction to milk.

Scheme Fit

As noted, Smith has had a series of different defensive coordinators during his career, which gives him plenty of experience of different types of systems. However, there should be no doubt that this has stunted his development.

At various times, Smith has been asked to either attack blockers or occupy blockers. He noted that in 2024 his role against double teams was to occupy both blockers, whereas in 2025 he was required to try and split them so he ended up in a one-on-one situation.

Harrison Phillips could be a very good mentor for him, in terms of helping him to hold up against double teams with better consistency.

In college, he was a teammate of current Jets defensive lineman Braiden McGregor.

Conclusions

Smith has been poor so far in his NFL career and will be considered a bust by Cowboys fans even if he manages to resurrect his career. Right now, halfway through his third season, he is on the brink of being out of the league.

The Jets can give Smith some valuable opportunities to be part of their rotation for the rest of this year and see if he can gain some consistency to build off. However, the recent addition of Khalen Saunders could make it less certain that he is guaranteed to be active every week and he underwhelmed in his first two Jets appearances.

Wilks has come in for some criticism this year, but as long as he is back in 2026, this will probably be good for Smith to get a rare chance to remain in the same system for more than a year.

Smith wouldn’t be the first highly-drafted defensive tackle to be a late-developer if he can exploit his physical gifts to turn himself into a useful contributor. However, he probably needs to be considered a long-shot at this stage and the Jets won’t be pencilling him into their plans for 2026 and beyond quite yet.

A mid-season look at the Unheralded Jets

imagn-26905788.jpg

The New York Jets are in the middle of another disappointing season. This one stings more than more most. They’ve traded away multiple franchise players, Aaron Glenn has struggled to find his groove as a head coach, and the team simply doesn’t have many players to root for.

So, in an effort to find something, anything, to keep myself interested in a lost season, I went on a search to find those players that have stood out among the wreck. And to my surprise there were a fair few that I found myself wanting to highlight.

Now, these guys aren’t going to be full-time starters, they won’t play premium positions, but they are potential building blocks that could end up playing a role on the next Jets team. And that means something in a year that would otherwise be just a vehicle to the next rebuild.

Jowon Briggs, DT

Jowon Briggs came to the Jets as a cast out. The downtrodden Cleveland Browns decided they had enough interior D-Line depth and could send off a promising young player. After all, when you spend a top-5 pick on a DT, you don’t really need to hold onto the Day 3 guy from last year.

The Browns’ loss has been the Jets’ gain. For next to nothing, the Jets have found a starting-caliber DT. And he’s going to get a shot to start, and play over 30 snaps a game, the rest of the season with Quinnen Williams now in Dallas.

Where Briggs has really excelled is as a pass rusher. He has a 14.2% pressure rate this season as a pass rusher. That’s the best mark in the NFL among DTs with at least 100 pass rush snaps. Now, is Briggs likely to keep that up with more snaps? That’s the big question, isn’t it? We have two games of proof for that, and well he has 11 pressures in 41 pass rush snaps in those two games. That’s an insane 26.8% pressure rate. Now, those numbers aren’t sustainable, but that 14.2% number? It’s highly unlikely that Briggs will be able to maintain an NFL-best pass rush rate for the rest of the season, but he doesn’t have to. If he’s above average that’s a massive win for the Jets.

Now, that doesn’t mean Briggs is a future All-Pro bottled up. He has his flaws. Top of the list is that he’s been an incredibly poor run defender. He has just a 61.1 run defense grade and a 52.4 tackle grade. He’s missed over 11% of his tackles this season, including one in each of the last two games. Both Cleveland and New England took advantage of Briggs poor run defense. And as a DT, it’s going to be hard to see the field as a starter with poor run defense.

The honest truth is that Briggs is likely to be a rotational pass-rushing DT if he’s on the next good Jets team. But, the potential is there for more. If Aaron Glenn and his staff can continue to develop the 24-year-old Briggs, they may have acquired a diamond for a pittance.

Austin McNamara, P

Spout all the jokes you want about a punter being on this list. Get it out of your system before we dive into the numbers, because Austin McNamara is not just a good punter, he’s an elite one. In fact, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that McNamara could end up on an All-Pro team this season.

McNamara has a number of outstanding stats, all minimum 50% of punts taken. His net punt average is 5th in the NFL. He has the 4th lowest return rate, and the best hangtime in the NFL. One stat that is disappointing is that McNamara is only 14th in punts downed inside the 20, but a lot of that has to do with the poor punting position the Jets are in. When most drives end inside your own 40, it’s hard to pin opponents deep. But McNamara only has 3 touchbacks this season.

Put all this together, and you get the picture of an elite punter who’s doing his best to keep the Jets in games by winning the field position battle. And when you’re a bad team that needs any advantage they can get to help them win, that’s massive.

It’s possible that McNamara, only 24-years-old, may end up the longest tenured Jet at some point in his career. And while that may be wild to say, it’s easy to think about.

Malachi Moore, S

Malachi Moore came into the season with higher expectations than the average Day 3 pick. He came in as an over-age, 4 year starter from Alabama. Even though he was only a 4th round pick, it was almost expected that he would get the vast majority of snaps as a starter at safety this year. And that’s exactly what’s happened. Moore has solidified himself as a starter on this team playing opposite of Andre Cisco.

While that may not seem like a lot, it’s worth talking about how he’s looked as a starter. Since taking over the starting job full-time in Week 6, Moore has graded out 17th in defense grade among safeties. That’s not great, but a top-20 safety on Day 3 as a rookie? That’s a pretty good outcome. It looks a lot better when you break down the individual stats as well.

Moore has allowed just a 36.4% completion percentage since Week 6, 2nd best among all safeties. His 31 yards allowed in those 5 games is 4th best. And he’s allowed just a 44.9 passer rating, 5th best. Those coverage numbers are as elite as they come.

There’s a real shot that Moore is a long-term starting safety in the NFL. That’s a massive win on Day 3 where the average player doesn’t even reach the end of his 3rd season.

TNF: Texans vs Bills Game Thread

imagn-24424457.jpg

Thursday Night Football, Week 12. Tonight the Houston Texans host the Buffalo Bills.

The 7-3 Buffalo Bills currently sit in 2nd place in the AFC East, a game and a half behind the surprising New England Patriots. The Bills, led by star quarterback Josh Allen, have a great offense, ranking 1st in the NFL in rushing yards, 2nd in total yards, and 4th in points scored. They have scored 30+ points in six of their ten games this season. The Bills have won three of their last four games, including wins over the Kansas City Chiefs and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The main Bills weakness has been in defending against the run, where they rank an abysmal 31st in the NFL.

The 5-5 Houston Texans have won three of their last four games. They currently sit in 3rd place in the AFC South, three games behind the division leading Indianapolis Colts. The Texans lost starting quarterback C.J. Stroud to injury a few games back, but they have somewhat surprisingly gone 2-0 in games started by his backup, Davis Mills. Unlike the Bills, the strength of the Texans lies in their defense. The Texans rank #1 in the NFL in yards allowed and points allowed. They have held seven of their ten opponents to 18 points or less. Unfortunately for the Texans, their offense has left much to be desired, failing to score 20 points in six of their ten games.

The Bills have struggled a bit on the road, going 2-2 in four road games. The Texans are 3-2 at home.

It’s the Texans and the Bills tonight on Thursday Night Football. Enjoy the game everybody.

Good morning Gang Green Nation!

So much for Lamar Jackson missing the game on Sunday. Jackson practiced in full yesterday after missing practice on Wednesday. He is now expected to start for the Ravens against the Jets. That does not bode well for a depleted Jets defense. Unless the Ravens suffer a letdown or the Jets play out of their minds, this one looks very likely to be a loss for the Jets, and probably not a close one.

Azareye’h Thomas set to return to the lineup for Jets Week 12 vs. Baltimore Ravens

imagn-27370851.jpg

The final injury report for Week 12 has been released for the game between the New York Jets and the Baltimore Ravens. It appears the Jets will be getting starting cornerback Azareye’h Thomas back into the lineup after the rookie missed Week 11 with a concussion.

nyjfridayreport.png

Thomas has been a full participant all week. In the aftermath of the Sauce Gardner trade, the rookie was elevated to the starting lineup. With the Jets out of the Playoff race and in full player development mode, the game reps for Thomas are important.

Will McDonald, who is nursing a quad injury, has been trending in the right direction all week. Although he is questionable, he was a full participant in Friday’s practice.

On the Baltimore side, the status of Lamar Jackson remains interesting. Jackson missed Wednesday’s practice with an ankle injury. It never seemed particularly likely he would miss the game. He returned to practice Thursday and Friday and participated fully. The question is whether he will be playing compromised at all. Of course, taking on this Baltimore offense is a very tough task for the Jets defense even if Jackson is less than 100 percent.

College Football Week 13 Spotlight: EDGE/IDL, Matayo Uiagalelei/A’Mauri Washington vs. USC

gettyimages-2245226471.jpg

How to watch: Sat, 11/22 , 3:30 PM/EST – CBS

Oregon’s late-season date with USC carries playoff implications for both programs, but for NFL watchers Week 13 is also a crucial measuring stick for two front-seven prospects who’ve quietly climbed draft boards. The Ducks’ front is built on a complementary pair: Matayo Uiagalelei, the long, athletic EDGE presence who has emerged as a consistent playmaker in Oregon’s scheme, and A’Mauri Washington, the beefy interior disruptor whose tape shows power and suddenness when he slants into gaps. How those two handle USC’s offensive line and run schemes this weekend will tell scouts more about their ceiling against Power Five competition than any stat line alone.

Uiagalelei remains the more versatile of the two a 6’5”, 272 lb EDGE type who pairs length with surprising sideline to sideline range and a growing pass rush package. He’s consistently shown the ability to set the edge in run defense while timing blitzes and stunts to create pressure, turning in production this season that has included TFLs and multiple sacks while earning solid grades from analytic shops. Against USC, his assignment discipline, pursuit angles and ability to translate pass rush moves off the edge into interior pressure will be the things scouts watch most closely. If he performs well here and it might cement himself as a Day 2 candidate who can be a solid force on the EDGE.

Washington, by contrast, projects as a three tech/NT tweener for 2026 draft boards the kind of 330 ish pound anchor who wins with power at the point of attack, violent hands, and an improving first step on slants and counter moves. Evaluations this fall have flagged his strength to hold gaps and his ability to generate penetration on handfuls of snaps, traits that show up in both PFF grades and scouting reports that now list him among Oregon’s top pro prospects. If Washington can consistently command double teams and disrupt USC’s interior running lanes, he’ll not only help the Ducks control the line of scrimmage Saturday but also push his draft grade upward turning a Week 13 spotlight into a full-blown pre Combine narrative for evaluators hunting for stout, NFL 232ready interior defenders.

Jets vs Ravens: Five Questions with Baltimore Beatdown

imagn-27547010.jpg

The New York Jets are on the road on Sunday for the 11th game of their 2025 campaign. They will be facing Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens have struggled a bit this season. They come into this game with a 5-5 record, good for 2nd place in the AFC North, one game behind the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Ravens’ defense was uncharacteristically porous in the first five or so games this season, but they have since turned things around and are looking more like the tough Ravens defenses of years past. In addition, Lamar Jackson missed a few games with injuries, during which the Ravens struggled badly. Jackson is back, and the Ravens have won four straight games. With the Ravens rounding into shape and playing their best football of the season, this seems like a bad time for the Jets to be visiting them in Baltimore.

Previewing this matchup, Nikhil Mehta, Ryan Parish, site manager at Baltimore Beatdown, was kind enough to answer a few questions regarding the 2025 Baltimore Ravens.

  1. The Ravens have had a long history of defensive excellence going back decades. However, this season the Ravens struggled badly on defense before turning it around over the last five or so games. What caused the early season defensive struggles, and why have the Ravens been successful in getting back on track on defense?

The early-season struggles can be attributed to three things: a tough stretch of opponents, the loss of DT Nnamdi Madubuike, and four-cornerback dime packages. Three of the Ravens’ first four games came against the Bills, the Lions, and the Chiefs; Madubuike went down in Week 2 and is still tied for the team lead in sacks; and Baltimore’s recent defenses were more successful with three-safety dime looks, but 2024 starter Ar’Darius Washington suffered a torn Achilles during the offseason. The Ravens have since played several softer opponents (including an especially easy post-bye stretch) and completely reworked their defense. Eric DeCosta traded for Alohi Gilman in October to move Kyle Hamilton into a hybrid Star/nickel, and deadline acquisition Dre’Mont Jones has already had an impact on the pass rush. Rookies like Malaki Starks and Teddye Buchanan have made some of the biggest plays of their young careers

  1. Lamar Jackson seems to be running significantly less this year. Is that an intentional strategy to try to preserve his health for the long run, or is it just statistical noise? If he scales back his running, will the Ravens offense suffer at all?

The feeling is that Lamar Jackson just isn’t fully healthy. We saw him look his normal self in that fantastic week one clash with the Bills. But since, he doesn’t seem to look as explosive after he took a shot from Ed Oliver at the end of that game. Right now, it’s definitely impacting the offense. Jackson’s legs are an easy trigger to pull when the offense gets out of sync. But because of his health, it seems he and the Ravens are trying to dial that back for now. The red zone offense in particular is struggling without Jackson’s legs, with few designed QB runs or scrambles into the end zone. Hopefully, keeping him upright and scaling back his workload right now will have him ready down the stretch.

  1. How would you attack the Ravens on offense and on defense?

I’ll let you in on a secret: defenses have actually figured out how to stop Lamar Jackson. It’s a job that requires a very specific set of skills, and it’s almost impossible to pull off, but it can be done. One of the basic calls in obvious passing situations is a drop-7, rush-3, with a QB spy. The three-man rush needs to contain Jackson’s scrambling lanes and get their hands up when he goes to pass, and the spy needs to mirror and trigger once there’s an open lane to the quarterback. That also allows you to run man coverage as opposed to the zone coverage Jackson has more frequently torn apart in his career. Against the Ravens defense, the answer is simple: pound the rock. Without Madubuike, Baltimore’s run defense is not as dominant as it has been in years past, and their past few opponents have not taken proper advantage. That can be tough if you’re at a deficit, but the Ravens have been starting slow on offense. The Jets should give Breece Hall plenty of early opportunities in this one.

  1. Which players, if any, are guys who the casual NFL fan may be unfamiliar with but Ravens fans know can make a difference in the game?

Keaton Mitchell fits this description to a T. He is an explosive play threat on every touch and it is only a matter of time before he finally takes one to the house. The Ravens have tried to get him in the mix as a returner, too, but he has not taken to it as naturally as the team hoped. Tight end Charlie Kolar also frequently draws the easiest matchups as a pass-catcher and can turn simple underneath catches into lengthy catch-and-runs. On defense, I’ll give a shout-out to Trenton Simpson, who got a shot as a starting linebacker last year but quickly fell out of favor. He was extremely effective as a blitzer last week and could make a few more splash plays on Sunday.

  1. Lamar Jackson is currently leading the NFL in passer rating and touchdown percentage. Last year he led the NFL in passer rating, touchdown percentage, yards per attempt and QBR. He owns the highest career passer rating in NFL history, and the highest career adjusted yards per attempt in NFL history. Jackson is also the greatest running quarterback in NFL history. Is he now the best quarterback in the NFL? Does he need a Super Bowl victory to claim that title?

Ravens fans have felt Jackson was the most talented quarterback in the NFL for a long time. There’s simply nobody else that can do what he does both on the ground and through the air. Jackson’s legs are well known throughout the league, but the strides he’s made with his arm aren’t talked about enough. I think about the throw against the Bengals last year stiff arming a guy while jumping out of bounds. I think about the 62-yard throw to 36 year old DeSean Jackson against Jacksonville. Elite throws that most quarterbacks aren’t making.

But yes, Lamar Jackson will likely need that Super Bowl victory to get most of the public to agree with him being the best quarterback in the NFL. Because otherwise, detractors in the media will always hold it against him.

Jets vs Ravens Game Thread

imagn-19030439.jpg

It’s week 12 of the NFL season and the New York Jets are on the road in Baltimore, Maryland to take on the Baltimore Ravens. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. EST.

The Jets opened the 2025 season with seven straight losses before winning two of their last three games. Justin Fields was playing so poorly he got benched in the middle of the game several weeks ago. The Jets were ready to name Tyrod Taylor the starting quarterback going into the Cincinnati Bengals game four weeks ago, until fate stepped in. Taylor was sidelined with a knee injury, Fields got another start and played extremely well against the Bengals, and he regained his starting job. However, the last two weeks have been disastrous for Fields, as he threw for 170 yards combined in two games, and averaged less than five yards per attempt in each of the two games. Head coach Aaron Glenn decided once again to make a change at quarterback. Tyrod Taylor steps in against the Baltimore Ravens. It won’t be an easy assignment.

The Ravens are just 5-5 on the season, but they have won each of their last four games to get back in the hunt for the AFC North title. The Ravens defense was appalling over the first five games of the season, but they have since turned things around. The Ravens have held each of their last five opponents under 20 points. On offense Derrick Henry is dominating at running back as usual and Lamar Jackson is having another MVP worthy season. This is shaping up to be another top-notch Ravens team. If there is a silver lining to this story, it is the Ravens’ home record, where they are just 2-3 on the season. However, most of those games came in the early part of the season, when Lamar Jackson was out due to injury and the Ravens were struggling badly. Jackson has been back for the last three weeks, the Ravens are surging, and this is a game the Jets are unlikely to win. There is a good chance the Jets won’t even keep the score respectable. You never know for sure, huge upsets happen occasionally, but this game looks like a monumental challenge for the outgunned Jets.

It’s the New York Jets seeking their third victory of the 2025 season against the Baltimore Ravens today. Enjoy the game everyone.
