Ted’s Talk: Seahawks attempt to lose the most winnable game vs. Cardinals, still win

Jason Myers.

The Seattle Seahawks comfortable win against the New Orleans Saints last week was an aberration. Once again, I felt like throwing up a few times and now have a splitting headache from the way Seattle let the Arizona Cardinals hang around in a game that had no business being that close. Stupid penalties buried drives, Jason Myers missed a field goal, and the defense gave up two consecutive scoring drives at the end of the game. Yet, Seattle gutted out a 23-20 walk-off win in the desert.

There was a lot of good for the first 55ish minutes of the game and a whole lot of angst for the final five minutes. This was a game that the Seahawks should have won handily, and they were lucky they were playing the Cardinals who were missing a huge part of their offense in James Conner.

Seahawks Droppings

  • As I said above, there were some really idiotic penalties. Ken Walker III got a taunting penalty that took away a short third down and pushed them back out of field goal range – eventually leading to a punt. Jaxon Smith-Njigba got called for an unnecessary holding call on what would have been a Zach Charbonnet TD to put Seattle up by three scores in the fourth quarter. Instead, they settled for a FG and kept Arizona alive. Riq Woolen played more like the version in Week 1 with multiple pass interference penalties. Boneheaded plays all around that the Seahawks were lucky didn’t cost them the game.

  • K9 had a few good runs, but he also had multiple plays where he ran backwards and lost four or five yards. You just can’t do that since it puts the offense farther in the hole. Walker had been better about that the last few weeks until the issue cropped up again tonight.
  • Jason Myers missed a FG in the fourth quarter that would’ve made the game much harder for the Cardinals. He made up for it by squeaking the game-winner through the uprights.
  • Sam Darnold once again was superb. He’s in complete control of this offense and had some fantastic throws like the deep shot to JSN and the throw to Elijah Arroyo in the end zone that drew a pass interference penalty.
  • Seattle let Kyler Murray off the hook a couple times early in the game. Coby Bryant had another interception and then proceeded to fumble the ball back to the Cardinals on the return after getting hit by friendly fire. Julian Love had another interception go right through his hands. This obviously frustrates Macdonald because he mentioned it in his interview after halftime. Not taking advantage of those opportunities will cost them a game some day as it nearly did in this one.
  • The defense was so good for the first three and a half quarters today. They were all over Kyler Murray and got six sacks on the day! Leonard Williams was a beast again. It looks like Uchenna Nwosu is rounding into form. Witherspoon was active in his first game back since the opener, and was a fingertip away from breaking up that late Marvin Harrison Jr TD catch.
It was a 6-sack night for the Seahawks:

Chenna with 2
Big Cat with 1.5
Thomas with 1
Ernest, Jobe, and Spoon with 0.5

Sacks from literally all three levels of the defense.

  • This was probably the first game since the preseason that Grey Zabel looked like a rookie. He was blown up a few times and gave up his first pressure of the season. Honestly, the whole line got pushed around quite a bit today. The Cardinals have some talent on the defensive line and of course Calais Campbell played well against Seattle, as per usual.
  • I’ll admit, I was nervous pretty much the whole game. When Myers missed that FG, it didn’t surprise me considering all the weird things that have happened for the Seahawks in Glendale over the years. They usually win the game, but crazy shit almost always pops up.

Ok, I can exhale now. Seattle survived Arizona’s charge and gets an extra break following the Thursday night game. You never complain about a win, and the fact that the Seahawks gutted this one out is a testament to the character of the team that Macdonald has built. Up next is the 50th Anniversary game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers featuring double throwback jerseys! For now, though, let’s all try to bring the heart rate down a little and enjoy this win for a few extra days.

Post-game video reaction recap: Seahawks walk-off Cardinals in the desert

Sam Darnold.

The Seattle Seahawks are 3–1 after surviving a Thursday night thriller in Arizona, edging the Arizona Cardinals 23–20 on Jason Myers’ walk-off 52-yard field goal. What looked like a comfortable 14–3 advantage turned into a nail-biter when Kyler Murray led a furious fourth-quarter rally. In the end, Seattle steadied itself just enough to escape the desert with a win.

From my perspective, this game underscored two major truths about this team. First, Sam Darnold is playing winning football. He finished 18 of 26 for 242 yards and a touchdown, managing the game with poise and avoiding costly mistakes. And second — Jaxon Smith-Njigba is a star. JSN continues to prove why he’s the focal point of Seattle’s passing attack, hauling in 4 catches for 79 yards, including a back-breaking 36-yard grab. He’s not just breaking out — he’s arrived.

Seattle’s offensive balance showed as well. Kenneth Walker powered his way to 81 rushing yards and a 29-yard reception, Zach Charbonnet added 39 more and scored his second touchdown of the season, and both Elijah Arroyo and AJ Barner chipped in with important catches, including Barner’s touchdown. The offense spread the ball effectively, making defenses respect more than one option.

Defensively, it was a mixed bag. Six sacks and two interceptions highlighted Seattle’s disruptive ability, but surrendering 14 points in the fourth quarter nearly undid everything. Mike Macdonald’s group has to find a way to finish games cleaner, especially with the currently undefeated Tampa Bay Buccaneers up next.

I break all of this down in detail on the newest episode of The Hawks Eye Podcast. From JSN’s emergence as Seattle’s star receiver to Myers’ redemption kick, we cover every angle of this nail-biting win.

Four Down Territory: Seahawks, Sam Darnold deliver in the desert

Zach Charbonnet pushed in by Charles Cross.

In a game that felt closer to a blowout snooze fest for the first three quarters, it turned into a wild walk off win for the Seattle Seahawks 23-20 over the Arizona Cardinals.

In classic Thursday Night Football fashion, this game was sloppy, choppy, and chaotic, as the Seahawks blew a 20-6 lead in the final minutes, just to capitalize on a Cardinals kickoff mistake that allowed Jason Myers to hit the 52-yard game winner. In what felt like a must-win game, considering Seattle was facing the possibility of falling to 0-2 in the division, the Seahawks found a way to get the massive road division win, and are now 3-1 on the year.

Let’s break it all down.

1st Down – Sam Darnold continues his ascension

Through four games, I don’t know how you can be anything other than excited by what Sam Darnold has shown. The divisive free agent acquisition has continued his stellar play from last year’s regular season in Minnesota, and the league is starting to notice.

Thursday night’s game was a perfect encapsulation of his play through the first four games of the season. Darnold, back in the Kubiak/Shanahan scheme, has so far been asked to do slightly less than what was asked of him in Minnesota, but it has created a hyper efficient version of Sam that we’ve never seen.

Last night, Darnold looked like the best player on the field. He was accurate on all three levels, he used his athleticism to escape a collapsing pocket all night, and made multiple big time throws, including the game winning 22 yard pass to Smith-Njigba in the final seconds to set up the game-winning kick. This was his second game winning drive on the season, although this game should’ve been a blowout, if not for critical mistakes by his teammates around him, that stalled out drives.

Last night just backed up what we’ve seen from the former first-round pick. Darnold is completing 70% of his passes, nearly 4% higher than last season. His passer rating of 106.5 is seventh best in the NFL, and his 9.1 yards per completion is fourth best in the league. While only throwing 25 passes a game this year, compared to 32 last year, he’s still making the most of his throws.

If not for some brutal turnovers against San Francisco and some mental errors tonight, Darnold and Seattle should be 4-0 and averaging more than 27.8 ppg they’re already averaging. It’s only four games into a long season, but it’s hard not to see a Baker Mayfield-esque impact Sam has had on this offense and team.

2nd Down – Klint Kubiak’s best game?

I was pretty surprised after the game to hear many griping about Klint Kubiak’s play calling in last night’s game. I actually believe that was his best game as the Seahawks OC so far.

Kubiak came out aggressive with his heavy 12 personnel look, and got his two young talented tight ends involved early as A.J. Barner and Elijah Arroyo dominated the first half. That was Klint’s calling card (heavy 12 personnel) in New Orleans, and I truly believe it will be Seattle’s best way to excel in offense in 2025.

Despite the loss of Robbie Ouzts, Kubiak still found a way to get the Seahawks running game back on track as the team ran for 155 yards. Despite JSN being a non-factor for the first three quarters, when it mattered most, Klint found ways to get him one on one coverage for three massive first down conversions late.

Do I love the conservative play calling in the penultimate drive that led to a Myers missed field goal? No, but when you look at the totality of last night, I thought it was a massive step in the right direction. The Cardinals have a playoff caliber defense, and if not for a missed field goal, questionable JSN holding call, and Kenneth Walker’s taunting penalty, the Seahawks should have probably scored 30+ points, on the road against a desperate division rival.

Stay healthy, and the sky is the limit for this offense.

3rd Down – Dominant defense, except…

For the first 50 minutes of the game, Mike Macdonald’s unit was as dominant as ever. Six sacks on the night, and two interceptions showed once again that this defense is right in the middle of the “top defense in the league” conversation. The final 10 minutes left a bit to be desired from two of the more notable guys on the roster, Riq Woolen and Devon Witherspoon.

Woolen continued his up and down play, with what I thought was a poor performance throughout last night. Multiple penalties (he’s one of the NFL’s most penalized players) and big completions that allowed Marvin Harrison Jr to finally wake up, allowed the Cardinals to stay in the game early and mount their comeback.

In his first game back from injury, Devon Witherspoon struggled in coverage, as he was picked on late by the Cardinals and gave up both of their late touchdowns to tie the game in the final 30 seconds. I get it, he is probably not 100%, but I do feel like the production is not matching the talent or the expectations that came with being the fifth pick in his draft. There’s no denying that Witherspoon is extremely talented, but for this defense to take that next step, it felt like Spoon and Riq were going to have to make the leap.

The surprise jumps by both Josh Jobe and Derion Kendrick have still allowed this defense to be elite, but it is fair to wonder how sustainable that will be throughout the season. This can be the best secondary in the NFL, they just need Witherspoon or Woolen to play to their potential.

4th Down- A win is a win

To see the Seahawks bully the Cardinals for 50 minutes was a joy to watch. To watch it all come apart in the final few minutes was disgusting to watch. To walk out of that horrible stadium with horrible memories with a road division win? Made it all worth it.

The Seahawks earned back a road division win after giving one away at home in week one. They sit at 3-1 and will now get an extra few days of rest before the wounded Tampa Bay Buccaneers come to Seattle, followed by a road game at Jacksonville, and then Monday Night Football at home against the Houston Texans. That is not exactly murderers’ row, and the potential of a 6-1 start feels very much on the table.

There’s a lot to like from this team, while also acknowledging there is a lot to still clean up. I think we learned something on Thursday from this offense and from our quarterback, and that has me excited and hopeful for this team’s chances of getting back to playoff football.

Going for two

1- Jason Myers

Way to bounce back, bud. Make sure to hit the smelling salts before every kick now.

2- JSN continues superstar level of play

Great players aren’t always great, they’re just great when they have to be. Smith-Njigba was more of a decoy in the first three quarters, but late, and with the game on the line, he stepped up. He was a star with Darnold out there, and together they put the game away.

Seahawks kickoff times could be impacted by Mariners playoff games

T-Mobile Park and Lumen field.

We are fast approaching the month of October, and that means the start of postseason baseball.

The Seattle Mariners are playing for a shot at the World Series, having won the American League West division title for the first time since their record-tying season of 2001. While this is obviously exciting for baseball fans in the Emerald City, it may cause some scheduling hiccups for a few upcoming Seattle Seahawks home games.

As noted by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, both of the Seahawks’ next two games at Lumen Field fall on days when the Mariners could be hosting playoff baseball at T-Mobile Park. The Seahawks are set to host their expansion siblings in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for Week 5 on Oct. 5 before then hosting the Houston Texans for a Monday Night Football matchup to close out Week 7 on Oct. 20.

Both of these games fall on days that could conflict with the Mariners’ postseason run—the Seahawks’ Week 5 contest is the same day as Game 2 of the American League Division Series, a home game for the second-seeded Mariners. In addition, the Mariners could be at home for Game 7 of the American League Championship Series on Oct. 20—the same night as the Seahawks-Texans MNF game—provided they make it that far and do not face the AL East division champions in the ALCS.

Seeing as the two facilities are within walking distance of one another, this would make traffic a pain for those looking to attend a game on one (or both) of those days. If Major League Baseball chooses to give the Mariners an afternoon time slot for Game 2 of the ALDS, Seattle officials say that kickoff for the Seahawks game (which is currently set for 1:05 p.m. PT) will be pushed back anywhere from 90 to 150 minutes. A final decision from MLB officials will be made by Friday.

Later in the month, a far less probable situation may come into play—if the Mariners were to make it to Game 7 of the ALCS, city officials are saying that the decisive game would begin at 4:30 p.m. PT, approximately 150 minutes prior to the start of the Seahawks’ Monday Night Football contest.

The last time a similar conflict arose was in October of 2022, when the Mariners faced the Houston Astros in the ALDS. Game 4 of the ALDS would have been held on the same day as a Seahawks game against the Arizona Cardinals, and had this happened, the Seahawks-Cardinals game would have been delayed to 2:30 p.m. PT, 85 minutes later than the originally scheduled 1:05 start. However, this did not come to pass as the Mariners were eliminated in Game 3 of the series.

Now to play the waiting game, wondering how the start times of these next few Seahawks home games will be affected by the Mariners’ postseason run. Your move, MLB.
