Washington Nationals at St. Louis Cardinals Game Thread

Follow along as the Nats play their first game in the post Rizzo/Davey era

The Nationals have been the talk of the baseball world over the past 48 hours. After being swept by the Boston Red Sox over the weekend, they fired manager Davey Martinez, with the club since 2018, and general manager Mike Rizzo, with the club since 2007. Now, they will enter the first game of their new era with new interim Miguel Cairo and interim general manager Mike DeBartolo at the helm.

The Nationals first lineup in the Cairo era looks similar to a standard Davey lineup versus righties, with the only difference being Riley Adams is behind the dish with Keibert Ruiz going back on the IL. Taking the ball for the Nats is Jake Irvin, who earned the win in his last start after going 6 innings and allowing 3 runs, all in the first from a three run homer.

The Cardinals will roll out a standard lineup against righties for them, with the biggest change being another day out of the lineup for Nolan Arenado as he recovers from a shoulder injury against the Cubs on Friday. Nolan Gorman will take his place at third base and bat fifth. On the mound for the Cards is right hander Sonny Gray, who has a 3.51 ERA on the year and a 2.86 ERA in his last 7 starts.

Mike DeBartolo cannot be handed the Washington Nationals GM job

MLB: General Managers Meetings

Joe Camporeale-Imagn Images

The Washington Nationals need to have an extensive search for their next GM, not just hand it to the interim

It is clear that Mike DeBartolo is a very different man from Mike Rizzo, his predecessor and the man he had worked under for over a decade. He has a different background, and from his first press conference, it is clear he has a different way of looking at baseball.

Mike DeBartolo will step into the Nationals' general manager position.

— Nationals on MASN (@masnNationals) July 9, 2025

His focus on analytics has already endeared himself to fans and local reporters alike. I have to admit, I was very impressed when I heard DeBartolo talk yesterday. The Columbia graduate is very clearly a smart guy and I could see him succeeding if given the chance.

However, the Lerner family better not just hand him the job. There needs to be a nation wide search to find the best and brightest minds from across Major League Baseball. The Lerner family needs to bring in many candidates who can provide unique insights. We put out a list of a few potential candidates and those guys all should at least be contacted.

The Internal vs External Path:

That is not to say they have to hire someone outside the organization, though that would be my preference. After all, for as smart as DeBartolo is, he was around during the malaise of the 2020’s.

That is not to say DeBartolo cannot succeed. There is actually a pretty recent example of a team who won a World Series before entering a malaise in the Kansas City Royals. After firing Dayton Moore, the architect of their championship, they decided to stay in house, hiring J.J. Picollo. Since becoming GM prior to the 2022 season, Picollo has done a solid job modernizing the Royals organization and he led them to a playoff appearance last year.

Like DeBartolo, Picollo was the analytics guy in an organization that was not analytically inclined before he took over. Since he has become GM, the Royals have done some impressive things, especially on the pitching development side. Guys like Cole Ragans and Kris Bubic have really taken off since Picollo has arrived. I think DeBartolo could be that kind of GM for the Nats.

However, on the flip side we can look at the Tigers. We took a deep dive into the Tigers rebuild and how it got resuscitated by new GM Scott Harris. The Tigers needed an innovative mind to pull themselves out of their extended struggles. Harris has provided them with that. His improvements to the player development has turned guys who were struggling under the previous regime and made them big time contributors.

You can win in different ways. Hiring the internal guy is not necessarily a bad thing. DeBartolo seems very different from Rizzo and could be a good candidate. He absolutely should be interviewed, but as one of many names interviewing for the job.

Cast a Wide Net:

There is no one right way to go about this, but there are wrong ways to go. Hiring DeBartolo without doing a serious search would be a bad move. It would be another example of the Lerner family not being all in and just doing the thing that let’s them do the least amount of work.

There needs to be a big search. The beauty of a search is that you can learn things from people even if you hire them. Clearly the Nationals need to modernize. When asked if the Nats needed to modernize, DeBartolo pretty much said yes without saying yes.

Getting all of these bright minds in the room would give the Lerner’s great insights. They really do not know anything other than the Mike Rizzo way. Rizzo has been the Lerner’s guy for nearly 2 decades.

Mike Rizzo is a Nationals legend, but given recent history, it is clear that the Nationals organization need an infusion of new ideas. Talking to some of the smartest voices from around the league would teach the Lerner’s so much.

Guys like the ones we listed as potential candidates will probably be talking about the importance of analytics and discussing what kinds of technology the Lerner’s need to spend on. It is important that the Lerner family hears these kinds of things from people outside the organization.

I would also prefer an outside candidate because it would be a fresh start. We will always appreciate the Rizzo era, but it is over now. Despite being so different, DeBartolo has worked for Rizzo for a decade plus. I would love for the Nationals to have a new set of eyes from outside the organization take a look at the situation here and act accordingly.

If the Lerner family conducts a serious search and decides Mike DeBartolo is the best guy, the fans will accept that. However, if they just hand DeBartolo the job, it will be a tougher sell. It would be yet another example of the Lerner family being lazy and taking the easy way out.

I am fascinated to see how this GM hunt goes. It is something I have never experienced as a fan before because Mike Rizzo has been around for so long. However, we are going to get one now. Hopefully it is an exhaustive search where the Lerner’s go far and wide to find the best candidate.

Follow along as the Nationals look for their first win in their new era

Last night’s loss kicked off the post-Rizzo and Davey era. Now the team is looking for their first win in this new era. To do this, they will need to knock off a Cardinals team that has been very good at home this season.

The lineup for tonight is an odd but explainable one. It looks like a lineup you would put out against a left handed pitcher. The likes of Amed Rosario and Alex Call are in for Luis Garcia Jr. and Daylen Lile. However, Cardinals pitcher Andre Pallante is right handed. The reason the Nats did this is because Pallante has been better against left handed hitters this year. Newly crowned All-Star MacKenzie Gore will take the mound.

The Cardinals have had some success against Gore in the past, especially Willson Contreras who is hitting third. Nolan Arenado is back in the Cards lineup after missing last night with a minor injury. Yohel Pozo will also be in the lineup as a DH. As mentioned, Andre Pallante is on the mound.

Follow along as the new look Nats face off against the Cardinals in a rubber match

The Nationals got their first win of the Miguel Cairo/Mike DeBartolo era last night with a comprehensive 8-2 win over the Cardinals. MacKenzie Gore was excellent, the offense was humming and the bullpen locked things down. Hopefully we can see something similar tonight.

After going with a more right handed heavy lineup against Andre Pallante, who had reverse splits, the Nats are putting their left handed bats back in. Luis Garcia Jr. and Daylen Lile will both come back into the fold after sitting last night. Brady House will get the day off with Paul DeJong replacing him at third. Drew Millas will also get his first start behind the plate since being recalled. Michael Soroka will look to bounce back after a rough outing on July 4th.

Who Will Lead the Washington Nationals in 2026? Inside the Search for the Nats Next Manager

MLB: St. Louis Cardinals at Cleveland Guardians

St. Louis Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol (37) stands in the dugout in the eighth inning against the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field. | David Richard-Imagn Images

With the Washington Nationals expected to make a pivotal managerial decision this offseason, we explore the most likely paths forward and what it could mean for the team’s long-term rebuild.

The Washington Nationals are in a position that no team wants to be in. With the mid-season firing of General Manager Mike Rizzo and Field Manager Dave Martinez, Washington now has to find a new regime to come in and turn the franchise around. Martinez and Rizzo were the organizational leaders who helped Washington win the World Series in 2019, and it is going to be a challenge to change this franchise.

Fans were starting to lose hope in Dave Martinez; however, this will not be an easy position to fill. Great managers hit the open market every year, whether that is an assistant or bench coach looking for a big opportunity or an experienced manager trying to find success elsewhere. Washington will have options, but who will be the best?

Even though the 2026 off-season is months away, let’s dive in and look into the top manager candidates for the Washington Nationals and their future.

Miguel Cairo, Washington Nationals Interim Manager

Cairo is currently sitting as the interim manager for the Washington Nationals and could hold his position into 2026. This is not his first time being thrown into the spotlight. Back in 2022, Cairo took over later in the season for Tony da Russa and the Chicago White Sox. He finished with an 18-16 record, but the challenge is steeper here in Washington. With a successful second half, Cairo could earn himself the position, but it is too early to tell.

A better approach might be to start from scratch by bringing in a new team and trying to change the culture in Washington. However, if the new regime has a great trade deadline and plays well in the second half, Cairo could have a great chance of earning a long-term role in Washington.

Ryan Flaherty, Chicago Cubs Bench Coach

Flaherty has been with Craig Counsell in Chicago for the past two years and is becoming a name to watch out for in the 2026 off-season. Before heading to Chicago, he worked for the San Diego Padres as a development coach. Flaherty was even allowed to serve as the acting manager in 2022, as Bob Melvin suffered from COVID-19. Working under one of the best managers in baseball, Flaherty’s time to shine as a manager could be this upcoming off-season. He could bring a different feeling to Washington Nationals baseball.

He has been most rumored with the Baltimore Orioles; however, Washington has an interesting roster to work with and a solid farm system that could intrigue any manager to come to Washington.

Oliver Marmol, St. Louis Cardinals Manager

Marmol has been in St. Louis since 2022 and was hired at age 35, becoming one of the youngest managers in baseball. His career with St. Louis started with a bang, winning 93 games and making the playoffs. Since then, St. Louis has struggled, and fans are becoming eager to win baseball games. It seems that Marmol’s time in St. Louis could be coming to an end if St. Louis finishes with another disappointing record. Marmol could bring much-needed experience and could be a perfect fit for Marmol to regain credibility.

I believe the Marmol is handcuffed by John Mozeliak. In an article written by Josh Jacobs on FanSided, quotes are included that talk about an interesting situation with Eric Fedde still starting games in St. Louis. On KMOX, when asked if he wanted to start bullpen arms or even call up prospects, he said, “Um, yes… And I’m trying to figure out how honest to be publicly here… there’s a lot of people at the table to make that decision, okay?”

It might be an unpopular pick, but with the experience and the way he has handled being the manager of one of the historic franchises in baseball, I think he would be a great addition to the Washington Nationals coaching staff.

Mark DeRosa, Team USA Manager

DeRosa has been a popular pick for Nationals fans on who they want to be the next manager. DeRosa is a former player who played sixteen years in the MLB. He has been an MLB Network Analyst but has recently taken the manager position for Team USA in the WBC. He managed the team in 2023 when they lost the Japan in the finals. DeRosa has expressed interest in becoming an MLB manager, interviewing for the position with the New York Mets and Miami Marlins in recent years.

This would be a fun hire. I am with Nationals fans, I think this would be a slam dunk hire for Washington and would immediately improve this team heading into the future.

Final Opinion

The most realistic option, if he hits the open market, is Oliver Marmol, and I would like the decision. Marmol has been dealt a difficult hand in St. Louis, and with a new regime in Washington, things could turn around for the franchise. It all stems from: What will Washington do to become a better baseball team? The answer is simple; if they spend money in the correct places while prioritizing the young talent they have, they will become a great baseball team sooner rather than later.

Washington Nationals vs Milwaukee Brewers Game Thread

MLB: Washington Nationals at Milwaukee Brewers

Washington looks to try and even the series against the red hot Milwaukee Brewers.

Entering tonight’s game, Milwaukee has won five in a row and is in a tight race for the National League Central. Meanwhile, the Washington Nationals are trying to become one of the bottom teams in all of baseball. After the firing of Rizzo and Martinez, Washington is continuing to find their identity and start winning games. A win tonight would be a great one, and it would be a moral boost for the entire locker room.

The two bright spots in the lineup, James Wood and CJ Abrams, are leading things off for Washington. With a struggling lefty on the mound, Washington will need their offense to step up in a big way. Lile and House will be two names to watch for the late stretch of the season, as they continue to try and make a name for themselves.

MLB Draft: Is Landon Harmon the next Travis Sykora for the Washington Nationals

Syndication: The Clarion-Ledger

Hannah Mattix/Clarion Ledger / USA TODAY NETWORK

The Washington Nationals were looking for the next Travis Sykora and Landon Harmon could be that guy

The Washington Nationals are likely to save some money due to taking Eli Willits at one. That money is going to help make high school righty Landon Harmon a rich man. The Nats took Harmon, a top 50 talent in the draft with the 80th pick in the draft.

When looking at this pick, I can’t help but be reminded of what the Nats did back in 2023 with Travis Sykora. They selected Sykora with the 71st overall pick in 2023, but gave him $2.6 million, which was roughly top 35 pick money. It looks like the Nats will do something similar here with Harmon.

Harmon ranked as the 48th best prospect according to MLB Pipeline. That is in a very similar range to Sykora, who was seen as the 40th best prospect in his draft year. Both are big right handed arms with massive velocity as well.

The Nats select RHP Landon Harmon with pick #80

Harmon is your Sykora pick.

Throws mid 90s touching 99. 65 grade FB

Also deploys 55-grade slider and a 45-grade changeup

6’5 but still finds the zone routinely. Great extension. Let’s go baby pic.twitter.com/yYbUzOunrD

— Nats Of The Future (@NatsOfTheFuture) July 14, 2025

Right now the fastball is Harmon’s bread and butter. Pretty much every evaluator considers it a plus pitch, with some even saying it could be a plus-plus offering one day. It is in the mid to upper 90’s while having fantastic shape as well.

If you could design a fastball in a lab, it would look something like what Landon Harmon has. Like Sykora, he has surprisingly good control for a big, hard throwing high schooler. It is not perfect, but for a high schooler, it is quite advanced.

The biggest thing for Harmon is to find consistent secondary pitches. He has a solid slider which has two separate shapes. Harmon has one sweeping breaking ball in the low 80’s and a harder cutter like offering in the mid to high 80’s. They are solid and he has some feel to spin, but it sounds like a development team could help him fine tune those offerings a bit. The breaking stuff has a chance to be above average with development.

Harmon does not have much of a changeup, but as a pitcher who dominates with his fastball, he has not really needed one. We will see what the Nats do there.

Like Sykora, Harmon is a moldable ball of clay with front of the rotation upside if everything clicks. However, he is a player we will need to be patient with. I am fired up to watch his journey to the show unfold and welcome to DC Landon!

MLB Draft: Washington Nationals swing for upside on day 2

MLB: Draft

Brett Davis-Imagn Images

The Washington Nationals are using the money they saved by picking Eli Willits number one overall

What the Nationals did in rounds three through five is why you do an under slot deal at the top. After taking Willits and Ethan Petry with their first two picks, the Nats took three straight high schoolers with massive upside. We talked about Landon Harmon last night, now it is time to talk about two more prepsters.

In the fourth and fifth round, the Nats took high schoolers Miguel Sime Jr. and Coy James. Both are likely to be players that require over slot deals. Sime and James were both considered top 100 players in the class, but were picked at 111th and 142nd respectively.

Sime the Fireballer:

Let’s start with the first pick the Nats made today, Miguel Sime. He is an 18 year old right handed pitcher out of New York. Sime was in the 80’s on Baseball America and MLB Pipeline’s board.

He is a huge kid with huge stuff. Sime is already 6’4 235 pounds despite only turning 18 in May. With that size, comes massive velocity. The right hander is already hitting triple digits on a regular basis and has a 70 grade fastball.

Miguel Sime Jr. (@TrentonThunder) struck out 11 over 8.2 innings this summer with an overall Whiff% of 36.1% and FB up to 1️⃣0️⃣0️⃣+ mph.

: 97.9 mph (T100.9), 2275 rpm, 18.5” IVB, 9.0” HB
- 32.3% Whiff% / 28.9% Z-Whiff% / 32.3% Chase

: 81.1 mph, 2318 rpm, -13.5” IVB, -8.6”… https://t.co/Fuo9FAc1Y0 pic.twitter.com/8nTB8Ftblc

— MLB Draft League Data (@draftleaguedata) July 14, 2025

Sime Jr. has massive stuff but is still a project. His control is below average right now and evaluators are mixed on his secondary pitches. Most think his breaking ball can be at least average, but he has mostly relied on the fastball. As an 18 year old who throws 100, he probably has not needed to use his offspeed pitches much.

However, he will have to develop those. The ingredients for a solid breaking ball and Baseball America mentioned that his changeup has looked good at times. However, you are buying the fastball and hoping everything else works out.

His frame, velocity and control questions remind me of Jarlin Susana. There is reliever risk here, but guys who throw this hard do not grow on trees. He is committed to LSU, so an overslot deal is very likely.

Coy James, the Pure Hitter:

In the fifth round, the Nats took another massive swing with Coy James. This is a player that had real round one buzz. ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel actually had him going to the Tigers at 24 in his last mock draft.

However, James fell due to his strong commitment to Ole Miss. With the Nats taking him in the fifth round, they must believe he is singable. James is likely to get a massive over slot deal that will pay him like a second round pick.

Coy James is a natural hitter who has performed on the showcase circuit for years. Baseball America has him inside their top 50, giving him a 55 grade hit tool. James also has at least average power to go with it. He has one of the better hit/power combinations in the draft. Despite being a shortstop right now, most feel like he will move over to either second or third base.

Nationals select Coy James, shortstop from North Carolina in the 5th round!
The Nationals savings from the Willits pick are showing up BIG time today. James had late first round buzz, great bat with 20 homer potentialpic.twitter.com/uKObmBhF68

— Paul Cubbage (@PaulCubbage23) July 14, 2025

MLB Pipeline was lower on him, but still had James at 94th on their board. They mentioned that he lost some athleticism after putting on muscle in the last year. Hopefully James can find the right balance in a professional setting with a strength and conditioning team.

James is not that far off from what Luke Dickerson was last year and should be a bit cheaper. Getting Harmon, Sime and James in round’s 3 to 5 is an epic haul. The Washington Nationals have done a great job navigating this draft and have really strengthened their prospect pool.

While Ronald Acuna Jr. pulled out for his teammate Matt Olson, this is still an awesome field. There is so much big time power on display. Guys like Oneil Cruz and Junior Caminero might not be megastars yet, but they have jaw dropping power. All of these guys can put on an absolute show.

Cal Raleigh has an insane 38 homers at the break and he leads the field along with Wood. Brent Rooker is another guy to watch. The A’s DH has been one of the more underrated power threats in the game over the last few years.

However, I think James has what it takes to get it done. His batting practice preparations have shown off the insane power he has. We see it in games all the time, but seeing him do it on the field in batting practice is just mesmerizing stuff.

How Washington Nationals ace MacKenzie Gore became an All-Star

MLB: Game Two-Detroit Tigers at Washington Nationals

Rafael Suanes-Imagn Images

In 2025, MacKenzie Gore went from a talented but inconsistent arm to an All-Star ace for the Washington Nationals

Ever since MacKenzie Gore was the 2017 Gatorade National High School player of the year and put up some of the most insane stats you will ever see, evaluators knew he had the talent to become an ace. Gore went number three overall in the 2017 Draft and has been billed as a future ace for years.

The southpaw has taken a winding path, but eight years later, MacKenzie Gore is the ace he was always supposed to be. Gore had some peaks and valley’s as a Minor Leaguer in the Padres organization, but he eventually made it to the Big Leagues in 2022.

No More Summer Swoons:

Before this season, his MLB seasons have followed similar patterns. Gore always has a great start to the season, teasing fans into believing in him before fading after the first couple months. In March and April, Gore has a career ERA of 3.07. May is even better for the lefty, with a 2.80 ERA.

However, his career ERA in June is 4.68 and in July it is an ugly 6.98. This season, the summer months have not been a problem for Gore, even as the team around him crumbles. Gore was not a problem in the Nats miserable June, posting a 2.93 ERA in five starts. He has also been sharp in his first two starts of July, with a 2.38 ERA.

Sure, the strikeouts numbers have not been as eye popping lately, but Gore is still getting good results and doing a better job limiting hard contact. He was a deserving all star, with his 3.02 ERA and 2.91 FIP.

Gore is striking out more batters than ever and walking batters at a career low clip. His 11.26 K/9 is an exceptional number and his 2.85 BB/9 is also better than average. This is a pitcher who has taken his game to a new level. So let’s get into the nitty gritty and see what Gore has done.

White Castle Special:

MacKenzie Gore has had a ton of success with his breaking pitches this season. His curveball has been a very good pitch for a couple of years now and he has always had a slider/cutter pitch. However, he added a slider to combat left handed hitters and it has elevated his whole mix.

MacKenzie Gore, Filthy 88mph Slider...and Sword. ⚔️ pic.twitter.com/DHojiOHSpq

— Rob Friedman (@PitchingNinja) June 25, 2025

Last year, Gore threw a slider just 1.3% of the time. This year he is throwing it 12.4% of the time. It is a pitch he almost exclusively throws to left handed hitters. Gore has thrown 229 sliders to lefties and just 2 to righties.

He is actually using his slider more than any other pitch against lefties, firing it in there 45.5% of the time against them. Even with the heavy usage, the pitch is wildly successful. Left handed hitters are batting just .117 against the slide piece. They are 7/60 with 27 strikeouts against the offering. Here he is carving up Juan Soto with three straight sliders.

MacKenzie Gore, White Castle Special. pic.twitter.com/8sUgZWlYV3

— Rob Friedman (@PitchingNinja) June 10, 2025

Last year, Gore used mainly a fastball, cutter, curve mix against lefties. Only the curveball was particularly effective, but he does not like throwing it to lefties as much as righties. However, this year he has an out pitch to control left handed hitters. He also mixes in the curveball to devastating effect when he needs to.

His mix against right handed hitters is quite similar to last year. Gore throws a lot of heaters, while using his wipeout curveball as his primary secondary pitch. He will also show righties a changeup and a cutter. Those pitches have flashes and they are really nice when he executes them. However, they are not as consistent. Gore has not changed too much of what he does against righties because it has worked for him.

Whiff Machine:

This season MacKenzie Gore has been a monster when it comes to generating whiffs. His ability to get swing and miss on a regular basis is why he is an All-Star. All four of Gore’s secondary pitches have a whiff% north of 40% which is insane.

Gore has a very good fastball too. While his velocity is actually down from 96 MPH to 95.3 MPH, the heater still has plenty of steam. Gore cut his fastball usage by about 5%, but is still throwing it just over 50% of the time.

The heater sets up all his other pitches and allows them to shine. It has good, but not elite whiff numbers, but it is the pitch everything else works off of. Hitters fear his hard fastball, which has very good shape as well.

Overall, Gore has a 31.7% whiff rate, a 31.9% chase rate and a 30.5% K rate. Those numbers are all in the 86th percentile or better among all pitchers. Among qualified starters, Gore is 6th in K%, 4th in whiff% and 10th in out of zone swing%.

This is what makes MacKenzie Gore an All-Star level ace. He is an elite swing and miss artist that gets hitters to chase at his pitches constantly. Gore has always had this in him, but he has finally found the recipe this season.

A combination of a refined pitch mix and a greater maturity on the mound has allowed Gore to reach his potential. It is a joy to watch him every fifth day even if it is frustrating to see the lack of run support he gets. I can’t wait to see MacKenzie show off his arsenal in the All-Star game tonight.

How the Washington Nationals can get back on track

MLB: Washington Nationals at Milwaukee Brewers

Benny Sieu-Imagn Images

The Washington Nationals have struggled mightily the last six weeks, here is how they can stabilize the ship

Since June 1st, the Washington Nationals have been the worst team in baseball. Their 10-28 record since June began is even worse than the Colorado Rockies. It has been a miserable run that has gotten the coach and GM fired. While the 2025 Washington Nationals are not a good baseball team, they have too much talent to be this bad. Here is what they need to do to right the ship.

Pitching Needs to be Better:

The pitching staff has been a massive disappointment this year. Outside of MacKenzie Gore, Brad Lord and Kyle Finnegan, things have been ugly. The Nats have a team ERA of 5.21, the second worst in all of baseball.

Early on in the season, the bullpen was historically bad but the rotation was a bright spot. Well now the rotation is very bad as well. The bullpen ERA is the worst in all of baseball at 5.88 and outside of MacKenzie Gore, the rotation has been bad as well.

Guys like Jake Irvin and Mitchell Parker were expected to build off of solid 2024 seasons. However, both have regressed. Irvin has not been a disaster, but he is an innings eating number 5 starter being asked to be the number 2 in the rotation. He has a 4.58 ERA and his drop in velocity has seen his strikeout numbers regress.

After a red hot start to the season, Parker has been really bad. His ERA sits at 5.12 and in his last 15 starts that number is over six. Right now Parker is not performing like a guy who belongs in a big league rotation.

While Michael Soroka has shown some interesting flashes, his ERA is over 5 as well. He looks better suited to a bullpen role, as he tends to run out of stamina after the fifth inning. Trevor Williams was also very bad before going down with injury.

The starting rotation was supposed to be solid for the Washington Nationals. However, it has been a problem and a big reason why the team is losing games. Too often, the starting pitchers are just not giving the team any chance to win.

Clean Up the Fundamentals:

The other biggest issue I have with this team is the lack of fundamentals. This team just does not play a good brand of baseball. There are too many mental mistakes and errors. The Nationals are top 10 in errors and top five in being caught stealing.

That is an ugly combination that shows a level of sloppiness. When watching the team, it is clear to see the lack of fundamentals in their game. It is easy to see why this team got their manager fired.

On the fielding side of things, the advanced numbers are just as bad as the more traditional metrics. The Nats are bottom five in defensive runs saved at -28. The infield is particularly ugly, with guys like Nathaniel Lowe, Luis Garcia Jr. and CJ Abrams grading out quite negatively.

— Thomas Nestico (@TJStats) July 11, 2025

Find Ways to Win:

This is not a great baseball team, but they are doing things to underperform their talent level. Instead of finding ways to win, the Washington Nationals are finding ways to lose. We saw that in Milwaukee and really we have been seeing it throughout this miserable 10-28 run.

The team is on pace to go 64-98 and has a real chance to lose 100 games. That would be an utter embarrassment. While the playoffs were always a pipe dream, the Nationals were expected to improve this year and potentially flirt with a .500 record.

I predicted 75 wins before the season. That is looking way too high at he moment. It will be a battle to even get to the 71-91 mark they have sat at the last two seasons. While this season is all but over and the Nats are 20 games under .500, the players need to show some pride here.

The pitchers need to perform and the team needs to play fundamentally sound baseball. Nationals fans have been through a lot these last five years and are desperate for a good team. It is on the players to give fans a reason to be excited heading into 2026. So far, 2025 has been one of the more disappointing seasons in Nats history and expectations were not even that high.

Where Do The Washington Nationals Draft Picks Rank In Their Farm System?

eli_willits_eddiekellyprolook.0.jpg

Baseball America

The Nationals got a haul of top 100 prospects in the 2025 MLB Draft. Here’s where they rank in the Nats’ system

It was a successful 2025 MLB Draft for the Washington Nationals, as they acquired a top 5 player in the class, along with 4 other top-100 prospects. These picks, along with a few more prospects from trades at the deadline, will have the Nationals' farm system in the best position it’s been in a long time, depth-wise. Here, I will break down where all the newest additions to the Nationals’ farm system would rank on my personal top 30 prospects list.

1st-Rounder SS Eli Willits

Ranking: 2nd (Behind Travis Sykora, ahead of Brady House)

Sykora is still the king of the Nats’ farm system in my opinion, but Willits is definitely within shouting distance, as while I think Sykora is a top 30 or so prospect in baseball, Willits is in the top 50ish. Willits likely won’t play any professional games the rest of 2025, sticking on the complex with the other new prep signings, so he won’t have a chance until next year to make his case for top of the Nats’ farm, but I have no doubt he will. He does, however, rank ahead of Brady House and Jarlin Susana to me, who are in a virtual tie for my 3rd place spot.

3rd-Rounder RHP Landon Harmon

Ranking: 6th (Behind Luke Dickerson, ahead of Cade Cavalli)

Harmon was my 35th-ranked prospect in the whole 2025 draft class, so I was ecstatic for the Nats to scoop him up with the 80th pick of the draft. He immediately slots in as my 6th prospect on the Nationals’ farm, as well as being their 3rd highest ranked arm. He’s very close with Luke Dickerson, who, despite his cold last month or so, I’m still a fan of, and sits ahead of Cade Cavalli, who I think will still be a key piece of the Nationals' future rotation, but currently is getting jumped by Triple-A hitters every 5 days. Harmon has the chance to make a Sykora-like rise up this list if he can come out next year dealing in a similar fashion.

5th-Rounder SS Coy James

Ranking: 10th (Behind Daylen Lile, ahead of Caleb Lomavita)

James was a steal in the 5th round of the draft, as he was receiving late first-round, early second-round buzz late into the draft process. His bat is advanced for his age, and he has a very good feel for shortstop, and would be a plus defender at third base if he ever has to move over. He slots in just behind Daylen Lile for me, and ahead of Caleb Lomavita, though I don’t think the 3 are separated by very much.

2nd-Rounder 1B/OF Ethan Petry

Ranking: 13th (Behind Yohandy Morales, ahead of Seaver King)

Petry felt like the only misfire of the draft to me, although if the organization really thinks they know how to unlock him, the potential is huge, as Petry was tracking to be a top 5 pick this year during his fantastic freshman year at South Carolina. For me, he slots behind a first baseman with a very similar profile in Yohandy Morales, and ahead of last year's first-round pick Seaver King.

4th-Rounder RHP Miguel Sime Jr.

Ranking: 15th (Behind Seaver King, ahead of Jake Bennett)

Sime is a flamethrower who has some issues to iron out, such as command and his secondary offerings, but the ingredients of a big-time starter or closer are all there. His physical tools make him one of the better prospects on the Nats’ farm, and for that reason, he ranks right at the middle immediately, behind Seaver King but ahead of Jake Bennett, but with a strong start to his pro career in 2026, he could skyrocket up this list.

12th-Rounder LHP Ben Moore

Ranking: 22nd (Behind Andrew Pinckney, ahead of Jackson Kent)

If you were exhausted and stopped watching by this point in the draft, I don’t blame you, so let me catch you up to speed on the Nationals biggest pick in the final 15 rounds, LHP Ben Moore from Old Dominion. Moore stands at 6’5”, 200 pounds and is up to 98 with his fastball, his best pitch. His slider and changeup flash solid potential, and he’s shown solid command out of the bullpen. He is built like a starter, but even if he isn’t able to, it’s a dangerous arsenal out of the bullpen. Moore is the kind of pitching depth that has been missing from the Nationals farm system, and I’m excited to see what the Nats are able to do with him. He slots in at 22, behind Andrew Pinckney and ahead of Jackson Kent, for me.

The Rest

Other than these 6, it was almost purely senior signings in an effort to save money by the Nats, with top 150 prospect prep two-way player Mason Pike in the 19th round as insurance in case one of the earlier high school signings fell through, and Alabama State draft-eligible sophomore 1B Juan Cruz in the 20th round. Pike, who is committed to Oregon State, will likely head to campus, although if they do sign him due to a deal with another prepster falling through, he would likely slot in around 10 or so in the Nats' farm system.

Cruz is committed to Georgia, and it’s unclear whether he intends to go to campus or not, but if he signs, he could slot in near the back end of the Nats' top 30 prospects, as he has some impressive bat-to-ball skills and is still tapping into the raw power from his 6’5” frame. The other 12 picks were all senior signings, some of whom could squeeze onto the Nats’ top 30 prospects, as I think a few of the arms they selected have real bullpen or spot starter potential.

Overall, the Nationals' farm system today is in a much better place than it was a week ago. Passing on higher-ranked prospects in Ethan Holliday and Kade Anderson allowed the Nationals to save big money and add more depth to their draft class than Holliday or Anderson would’ve allowed them to. I’m very excited to see how the farm looks after the trade deadline, and I wouldn’t mind seeing Mike DeBartolo get daring with some of the players he trades. Comment down below how your list differs from mine, and if you think I am underrating or overrating any prospects in particular.

Nationals Prospects: It is time to see what Cade Cavalli can do

MLB: Spring Training-Washington Nationals Workouts

Sam Navarro-Imagn Images

Despite poor results in Triple-A, the Washington Nationals should give Cade Cavalli a shot in the rotation

The Washington Nationals have a big starting pitching problem right now. Outside of MacKenzie Gore, the rotation has been a big disappointment. Guys like Jake Irvin and Mitchell Parker have taken a step back. The Nats also need a fifth starter, with Trevor Williams out for the season. Despite poor numbers in AAA, it is time to give Cade Cavalli a shot.

At this point, with the season all but over and Cavalli almost 27 years old, it is just time to see what he can do in the big leagues. Yes, he has poor numbers in Triple-A, but what do the Washington Nationals have to lose.

Fans would much rather see Cavalli then the likes of Shinnosuke Ogasawara. Cavalli still has big stuff and has shown some flashes in AAA. He has been better than his ERA would suggest, even if he has not been amazing.

CADE CAVALLI!!
5.0 IP | 3 Hits | 0 ER | 1 BB | 10 K’s. pic.twitter.com/ghWuhvs9S6

— Allsports Roc (@AllsportsRoc) May 28, 2025

While Cavalli’s ERA in AAA is at 5.80, he has been very unlucky. His FIP and xFIP suggest he should have an ERA somewhere in the low to mid 4’s. That is still nothing to write home about, but it is better than the surface level numbers. Cavalli’s batting average on balls in play is at an abnormally high .354, which suggests bad luck is at play. A normal BABIP is around .300 or .310.

While he is getting unlucky, there are still things he needs to work on. Cavalli’s 4.35 BB/9 is simply too high. He is not going to have success as a starter with that kind of walk rate. As a bullpen arm, that would be fine, but not as a starter. He has also had a home run problem this year, though that has not been an issue for him in the past.

Despite the poor numbers and the deficiencies we just talked about, there are still things to like in Cavalli’s game. First, he gets a lot of strikeouts. In 49.2 AAA innings, he has 54 punch outs. That is 9.79 K/9, which is a very good mark for a starter.

Cavalli also gets a ton of ground balls, which is a big asset. His 57% ground ball rate in AAA is an elite metric and would be one of the best marks in the majors. Keeping the ball on the ground limits damage and creates quick outs. That high ground ball rate also suggests some of his home run problem is a combination of bad luck and too many mistakes.

A guy who gets that many ground balls should not be allowing 1.27 HR/9. Triple-A tends to be a more hitter friendly league, so maybe that explains some of his woes. Cavalli is coming off one of his best starts in a while, going 5 innings, allowing one earned run with 7 strikeouts. With the All-Star break, now is a good time to call him up.

His stuff was sharp in his outing against a good Red Sox Triple-A team. He touched 99.6 MPH on his fastball and had a deep mix of pitches going. Cavalli walked three guys, but the stuff looked to be at pre-Tommy John levels.

That Tommy John recovery has been a complicated path for Cavalli. After going under the knife in March of 2023, Cavalli missed the basically all of the next two seasons. As expected, Cavalli missed all of 2023. However, he only managed 8.1 innings in 2024 after some set backs. Even if he has had his struggles, it is good to see Cavalli on the mound throwing gas.

Cavalli’s fastball tends to underperform it’s mid to high 90’s velocity due to lackluster shape. This makes his array of secondary pitches more important. Cavalli throws a curveball, a cutter and a changeup. All of them can be nasty at times, it is all about being consistent.

Despite the poor numbers, it is time to see what we have with Cade Cavalli. The 2020 first round pick turns 27 in August, so the clock is ticking. I would much rather get clarity on Cavalli at the big league level than see a soft tosser like Ogasawara. There is nothing to lose and it would give the fans something to watch.

Hopefully we can see Cade in the rotation once we restart the season. If he succeeds, he can be a part of the rotation going forward. However, if he struggles, Cavalli still has the power arm to succeed in a bullpen role. It is time to see what we have with this fireballer.

Second-Half Spotlight: Key Storylines for the Washington Nationals

MLB: Washington Nationals at Milwaukee Brewers

From CJ Abrams’ consistency to potential trade chips and young talent development, Washington’s second half offers plenty to track beyond the standings.

Coming back from the All-Star break, the Washington Nationals are 38-58 and among one of the worst teams in all of baseball. With so many questions surrounding the Washington Nationals’ front office, there are even more questions to be answered for the on-field production.

James Wood and MacKenzie Gore became first-time All-Stars this season, and CJ Abrams has improved tremendously since last season. There is no question who the future of the franchise is, but the supporting cast is filled with question marks.

Washington is not as bad as their record indicates, leading some people to believe there is room for improvement in the second half of the season. There are many different storylines to keep an eye on during the second half, and these situations could make or break the Washington Nationals, not just in 2025 but also in the years to come.

Here are key storylines for fans to keep an eye on in the second half of the 2025 season.

Abrams Aims to Avoid a Second-Half Slide

The star shortstop made his first All-Star game in 2024, playing like a top shortstop through the first half of the season. However, his offensive production began to drop off. In the first half, Abrams slashed .268/.344/.489 and had a wRC+ of 129, making him a premier offensive shortstop. However, in the second half, Abrams slashed .203/.260/.326 with a wRC+ of 64. This could be caused by several circumstances, whether that is playing fewer games or being sent down to Triple-A due to off-the-field issues, but the point still stands.

Abrams is currently having the best season of his career, already holding the highest WAR of his career. With a statline of .287/.353/.483 with twenty stolen bases, posting the same stats during the second half may insert him into being considered as one of the top shortstops in all of baseball.

Time to Cash in on Vets?

Heading into 2025, Washington was looking to improve from their seventy-one wins from the past two seasons. They are currently 38-58, on pace to have fewer wins than years past. Washington is not in a playoff position; however, they have some veterans that other teams would love to add to their roster before the trade deadline. Players signed to one-year deals this past offseason, such as Josh Bell and Michael Soroka, could be priorities for teams trying to fill holes late in the season.

The big name to trade is Kyle Finnegan. With 18 saves and a 3.12 ERA, Finnegan would fit well in a bullpen that needs a great non-closer. It is hard to determine what kind of value Washington would receive in return, due to Finnegan becoming a free agent in 2026. If you are Washington, bringing in a prospect with upside would be a great return for Finnegan.

House Hunting for an Offensive Breakout

In just twenty-three games, House has shown flashes defensively and the capability to be a starting third baseman in the MLB. The offensive approach needs improving, especially with his plate discipline, striking out twenty-three times to just four walks. House is currently slashing .258/.286/.376 and has two home runs (hit in the same game) and five doubles.

Washington is hoping to see the continuous progression from House, and hopefully, they will keep giving him plenty of opportunities. With DeJong on the roster, it may be hard to find consistent playing time for the 22-year-old. However, DeJong could hold value to another team looking for a right-handed bat and could be a potential deadline trade piece.

Crews’ Comeback Tour Begins

Washington has shown they are patient with Dylan Crews’ injury and are hoping he can come back better than ever. Heading into the 2025 season, Crews was the favorite for the National League Rookie of the Year. However, Crews started the season horrendously, but was finding his footing in the lineup. In the two games before his injury, he had notched three hits, two of them being home runs. With an oblique injury, Washington has been concerned and not rushing Crews back into the lineup, and the patience could be to fix the offensive approach.

At 23 years old, Washington will be asking a lot out of the former top prospect in 2026. With the emergence of James Wood and CJ Abrams, Washington could have found the future core in their lineup. Crews has started his rehab assignment and will get the opportunity to show the potential improvements to his game later in the season. If Crews’ approach can improve, Nationals fans should be ecstatic heading into 2026.

CONCLUSION

There are many storylines to watch for in the second half of the 2025 season. Most important is the youth movement continuing and seeing improvement from key future assets. Hopefully, Washington can cash in veteran bats and arms and keep improving the farm system. Regardless, it will be quite the second half. I expect to see an improved Washington team, as they are not as bad as their 38-58 record indicates.

Reset and Refocus: Washington Nationals Open Second Half vs. Padres

MLB: All Star-American League at National League

Washington Nationals mascot during the 2025 MLB All Star Game at Truist Park. | Dale Zanine-Imagn Images

Washington begins their post-break schedule against a Padres team fighting to stay in the playoff picture.

Washington is coming off a much-needed break from the regular season. With a 38-58 record, they are amongst the worst teams in all of baseball; however, their record does not indicate the talent that is littered throughout the roster. James Wood and MacKenzie became first-time All-Stars this season, while CJ Abrams made a case for appearing in his second All-Star game. Washington should perform better in the second half, but they have a tough task to start the second half, matching up with the San Diego Padres.

San Diego is entering the second half in second place in the National League West, behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. With just a .5 game lead on the San Francisco Giants, this is already a big series for San Diego. While superstars Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. have been great this season, some could argue the rest of the lineup has been disappointing. As good as the pitching staff has been, they have been dealing with serious injuries to some of their star pitchers, Michael King and Yu Darvish. If San Diego can get healthy soon, they could dominate like they were supposed to start the season.

Let’s dive into the San Diego Padres’ season stats.

TEAM STATS

OFFENSE

San Diego has one of the highest payrolls in all of baseball, paying stars like Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. to lead the way offensively. Machado and Tatis have been great this season; however, the rest of the offense has not performed as well. As a team, they are batting .246 (17th), scored 383 runs (25th), have hit 83 home runs (27th), an on-base percentage of .315 (18th), and a slugging percentage of .374 (25th).

PITCHING

The starting rotation and the bullpen have been lights out this season, becoming one of the best units in baseball. With Nick Pivetta performing as well as he has and Jason Adams and Robert Suarez holding down the bullpen, this team pitched incredibly well throughout the first half of the season. With the addition of Michael King during the second half, this could be a dangerous rotation to face come playoff time. As a team, they have a 3.64 ERA (6th), allowed 95 home runs (8th), a 1.24 WHIP (10th), and are batting .229 against them (3rd).

GAME ONE - Friday, 6:45 EDT

WAS: RHP Michael Soroka (3-7) - 13 G, 5.35 ERA, 74 SO, 1.16 WHIP, 75 ERA+

SD: RHP Dylan Cease (3-9) - 19 G, 4.88 ERA, 129 SO, 1.33 WHIP, 85 ERA+

Soroka has shown flashes of the potential he once had earlier in his career, but he has not been able to consistently pitch at a good level in the big leagues. Soroka could be a prime trade candidate for the Washington Nationals at the trade deadline, but with just one year remaining on his deal, it is unclear what kind of value he holds. In his last start, Soroka pitched decently against the St. Louis Cardinals, throwing four innings and allowing four hits and two runs in an embarrassing 8-1 loss.

Dylan Cease struggled through the first half of the 2025 season. In his last seven starts, Cease has a 5.22 ERA and has struggled to find consistent success in his starts. Cease is hoping to improve his play in the second half as he is a free agent heading into next season. In his last start, Cease threw six innings and allowed five hits and six runs in a loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

GAME TWO - Saturday, 6:45 EDT

WAS: LHP Mitchell Parker (5-10) - 19 G, 5.12 ERA, 66 SO, 1.42 WHIP, 78 ERA+

SD: RHP Yu Darvish (0-1) - 2 G, 6.48 ERA, 7 SO, 1.68 WHIP, 67 ERA+

Parker was primed to be a solid starter for the Washington Nationals in 2025 and has regressed from what he showed in 2024. With a 5.12 ERA, it is unclear what his future holds in Washington. In his last start, he threw one of his worst games of the season, allowing eight hits and seven runs in another Washington loss.

At 38 years old, Darvish has performed well over the past few seasons, continuing his performance as a consistent starter. Held down by injury for most of the season, Darvish enters this series with only two starts on the season. He has struggled to come back from injury, and in his last start, he threw 4.2 innings, allowing five hits and four runs.

GAME THREE - Sunday, 1:35 EDT

WAS: LHP MacKenzie Gore (4-8) - 19 G, 3.02 ERA, 138 SO, 1.20 WHIP, 133 ERA+

SD: RHP Nick Pivetta (9-2) - 19 G, 2.88 ERA, 122 SO, 1.02 WHIP, 144 ERA+

MacKenzie Gore was voted to his first All-Star game and has benefited from having a career year in Washington. He is pitching so well that there are rumors that Washington should be considering a trade because of how high his value is. In his last start, he threw a great game, throwing six innings and allowing five hits and one run while striking out seven batters.

After inking a new deal with the San Diego Padres last off-season, Pivetta is benefiting from a career year. Through the first half, Pivetta has been one of the best pitchers in baseball with a 2.88 ERA, and many believe he was snubbed from the All-Star Game. In his last start, Pivetta threw a gem, going 6.2 innings and allowing just three hits and no runs while striking out eight batters.

Washington Nationals fans will have a tough time watching second-half baseball. With no shot at the playoffs and rumors swirling about trading the team’s top players, it feels like the lowest Washington Nationals baseball has been in quite some time. However, with young stars throughout the lineup, it will always be fun to watch Abrams, Wood, and Gore perfect their craft while the rest of the roster finds its roles.

Follow along as the Nationals return to action against the contending Padres

The All-Star break could not have come at a better time for the Nationals. They were a sinking ship that desperately needed time to find their bearings. Between the draft and the firings, most of the Nats fans attention has not been on the team on the field. That will change as they are back in tonight against the Padres.

The Nats will roll out a familiar lineup as they start the second half. CJ Abrams and James Wood make up a dynamic one-two punch at the top of the order. However, the rest of the lineup has been inconsistent at best. Rookies Brady House and Daylen Lile will be in action to start the second half. Michael Soroka will take the ball for the Nats.

The last time Dylan Cease was in Nationals Park, he threw a no-hitter. However, the free agent to be has not had the season he would have hoped for. The top 7 hitters in the Padres lineup are one of the best top 7’s in the league. Left fielder Gavin Sheets has really found a home in San Diego. We know how dynamic the likes of Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Jackson Merrill can be.

Follow along as the Washington Nationals look to snap yet another losing streak

It has been an awful product on the field the last couple months. There is no getting around that. The Nats have lost nine of their last 10 and are 1-6 in the Miguel Cairo era. It is getting very frustrating to watch the Nats fail to do the little night after night. But the games have to be played.

Tonight, the Nats are only making one change to their lineup. Drew Millas will get the start behind the plate. He will take the place of Riley Adams. Otherwise the lineup is unchanged. Mitchell Parker, who has struggled mightily will take the mound tonight as the Nats look to stop their 5 game losing streak.

MLB Draft: Washington Nationals sign Eli Willits to under-slot deal

The Washington Nationals signed first overall pick Eli Willits to an $8.2 million deal

Well, that was quick! The Washington Nationals have signed their first overall pick Eli Willits to an $8.2 million deal. This sets the record for the largest bonus given to a high school player, at least until Ethan Holliday signs. However, the Nationals also got some serious savings on the pick.

No. 1 overall pick Eli Willits signs w/@Nationals for $8.2 million (slot value = $11,075,900). Breaks @MLBDraft record for a HS player ($8.19 mil, Josh Holliday). Oklahoma prep SS, quality bat-to-ball skills, plus speed, solid defender, high baseball IQ. Son of ex-big lgr Reggie. pic.twitter.com/fMowpfNb26

The 17 year old signed for nearly $3 million under the recommended slot which was just over $11 million. Now why would he do this? Well, a lot of mocks had Willits in the 5th overall range. The slot value for the fifth pick is $8.13 million. By playing ball with the Nats, he got more than the slot for that fifth pick, a place he could have fallen to.

Regardless, this is a major coup for the Nats. It allows them to sign the other high upside prep players in their class. They already signed Miguel Sime Jr. to an over-slot deal that payed him $2 million. The Nats are also poised to give over-slot deals to the likes of Landon Harmon and Coy James.

Also with these massive savings, there is an outside chance they have enough money to sign 19th rounder Mason Pike. Pike was seen as a 2nd to 3rd round talent, but his strong commitment to Oregon State caused him to fall. He is still likely to go to school and play on both sides of the ball. However, maybe the Nats could have enough money to pull it off.

Now they absolutely have enough money to sign Harmon, James and the rest of their class. This under-slot maneuver is not a way of being cheap, rather it is a move to spread the bonus money around, rather than throwing it all at one player. It might not pay off, but it is easy to see the strategy.

Willits is being introduced this afternoon and has been in town doing some sightseeing. With his tender age, he probably will be held back from playing this season, but he is an advanced player, so he might get a few games with the Fred Nats.

This draft class could be a franchise defining bunch. There are a lot of high upside players that could be the future of this organization. However, they need a strong development infrastructure around them. Hopefully the new GM, whether that is Mike DeBartolo or someone else can modernize the player development system.

It is an exciting day to be a Nats fan. While the current big league squad is a tough watch, we are getting a sneak peek at the future. Eli Willits does not turn 18 until December, but is advanced beyond his years. Now he is officially a member of the Washington Nationals organization.

Follow along as the Nationals look to take the series against the Padres with their ace on the mound

The Nationals got a much needed win last night. Now they have a chance to win their first series out of the All-Star break. The Nats will have their ace MacKenzie Gore on the mound as he takes on his former team.

The Nats switched things up in the lineup today. Looking to get his star going, Miguel Cairo is putting James Wood in the DH spot. That will slide Daylen Lile to left field and put Alex Call in right field. Josh Bell will get the day off. So will youngster Brady House, who is out of the lineup in favor of Paul DeJong. Riley Adams will be back behind the plate to catch MacKenzie Gore.

The Padres have also made a few tweaks. Xander Bogaerts will DH today with Jose Iglesias taking his spot at shortstop. Elias Diaz will also be back behind the plate. Nick Pivetta carved up the Nats lineup in San Diego. The Nats will look to have more success against the right hander this time around. Pivetta is having the best season of his career.

The Washington Nationals look like a 100 loss baseball team

MLB: San Diego Padres at Washington Nationals

Brad Mills-Imagn Images

Since June, the Washington Nationals have been the worst team in baseball and there is no end in sight

At the beginning of the season, this would be an unimaginable thing to say, but the Washington Nationals look like a team poised to lose 100 games. They are on pace to lose 99 right now, but have been sinking like a stone ever since the start of June.

The team is 11-30 since the month of June began, the worst mark in all of baseball. Believe it or not, this team was 28-30 after May ended and looked like a team that could take another step towards competing. Yes, the team had flaws, but things looked like they were trending up. However, the last couple months have been a total humiliation. The players must be ashamed of their performances.

They are playing a loser brand of baseball. Between the Josh Bell base running mistakes, Nathaniel Lowe going from a Gold Glover to a bad defender, or Daylen Lile being unable to pick up a ball in the corner without bobbling it, the brand of baseball is disgusting.

Even when the Nats were winning more, they still made plenty of boneheaded mistakes and had days where they brought no energy whatsoever. Now, those days have just become the norm. The team did not have super high expectations, but they have still managed to make this one of the most disappointing seasons in Nationals history.

In the last two games I have attending in person, the Nats have just been absolutely humiliated in both. In the Red Sox game, they were down 9-0 by the 4th inning. Nobody seemed to know how to field a ground ball, especially not pitcher Mitchell Parker, who has not been able to figure out how to field his position at an adequate level.

Yesterday, the game felt over before MacKenzie Gore even got an out. While Gore has had a tremendous season, he had the worst start of his career yesterday. This series has just shown how reliant the Nats are on their 26 year old, 24 year old and 22 year old stars. If those guys are not performing, the team has next to no chance of winning.

That statement just proves how unbalanced of a roster Mike Rizzo built. He made an all-time great trade, but it is now fair to worry if he and Mark Lerner put the team in such a hole that we will never truly see the fruits of that trade. Will MacKenzie Gore or CJ Abrams ever play a playoff game in a Nationals uniform? How many amazing James Wood seasons will be wasted? These are both fair questions right now.

There have probably been worse Washington Nationals teams, but I can’t remember being so frustrated at a team. What was supposed to be a step forward season has turned into an apocalyptic nightmare. The team is as far away as ever, and it looks like the Nats might have to rebuild the rebuild.

Will the team be in the playoffs in either of MacKenzie Gore’s last two years of team control? I am starting to really doubt it. With that being the case, trading him at the deadline or offseason might end up being the best course of action.

This season ended whatever delusions Nats fans had of being close to the finish line. As much as I hate to say it, there is a real chance that the 2020’s will be known as the decade of darkness for Washington Nationals baseball.
