Former Vikings GM joining Jets front office after serving as consultant

The NFC North was the focus of the football world during the regular season. Now, as we are fully entrenched in the offseason, they remain the focus and the center point for all things NFL-related. From Kevin O’Connell winning Coach of the Year to the Lions losing two coordinators to head coaching jobs, a lot of news has come from those within the division.

One of those coordinators from the Lions was Aaron Glenn who was hired by the Jets to be their next head coach. The choice to hire Aaron Glenn came from an advisory board that is now seeing one of their people remain with the Jets.

Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team shared the news on social media on Friday that former Vikings general manager Rick Spielman would be joining the Jets front office. Spielman was with the Vikings from 2006 to 2021, serving as their Vice President of Player Personel before being promoted to General Manager.

Spielman was involved in several key moves for the Vikings over the years, such as signing Kirk Cousins and drafting Adrian Peterson and Justin Jefferson. The Jets hope his dynamic hit rate on scouting will carry over to their building.

Super Bowl 59: Vikings fans can watch a former first-round pick

On this Super Bowl Sunday, we will be watching a rematch between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs from two years ago. The game will have some new players mixed into the fold from roster building over that time, one player specifically is going to be familiar to Vikings fans.

A former first-round pick of Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah will be playing for the Eagles on Sunday.

Lewis Cine was cut during the final roster cuts in August but was signed quickly by the Buffalo Bills. Cine was cut later in the season and signed with the Eagles in January ahead of the Eagles playoff run to the Super Bowl.

Cine has not played any snaps since Week 14 for the Bills where he contributed with 16 special teams snaps played. He has yet to play a snap for the Eagles, but anything is possible for Cine on a Super Bowl Sunday.

The Eagles and Chiefs will kickoff at 6:30 P.M. EST/5:30 P.M. CST on Sunday.

Super Bowl 59: Randy Moss set to cover the big game with return to ESPN

Super Bowl Sunday isn’t just a big day for the two teams playing in the game but for every team. It can affects free agency, coaching staff moves, and even how they can approach the draft in the coming weeks.

On this special Super Bowl Sunday, the pre-game coverage will focus on things other than on the field.

Randy Moss, a former Vikings legend and Hall of Famer will be returning to ESPN for work on Sunday’s NFL Countdown. He stepped away in December when he announced that he was overcoming a battle with cancer. Moss explained he had cancer, but a procedure removed it, and he was in recovery.

On Saturday night, his co-worker and friend Adam Schefter made the announcement, which excited everyone in the NFL world.

The Vikings social media team shared their excitement as well. Moss has remained a great part of the Vikings family, and all of us here at Vikings Wire could not be happier with a healthy return for him.

We love to see it

Where did Justin Jefferson finish in Offensive Player of the Year voting?

Justin Jefferson has set the bar for himself so high that even when it felt like he was having a “down” year in 2024, he was still spectacular.

The fifth-year wideout finished second in the league with 1,533 yards and ten touchdowns, earning First-Team All-Pro honors for the second time in three seasons under Kevin O’Connell. This was with Sam Darnold throwing him the ball after spending his first four years primarily catching passes from Kirk Cousins.

There was little fanfare about Jefferson potentially winning the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year award, but he did receive some votes. He finished seventh in voting with 27 points. Voting was on a 10-5-3-2-1 scale, where first place was worth ten points, second place was worth five, etc.

Jefferson had to fight through some rough stretches during the season, getting held to two catches for 27 yards at Soldier Field and five receptions for 48 yards against the Jaguars.

His 90.2 yards per game were his lowest since 2020, his rookie season. However, that again shows how good Jefferson is. That mark throughout a career would still be the highest in NFL history (he’s the current all-time leader with 96.5 yards per game. Ja’Marr Chase is second with 87.5 yards per game).

Although Jefferson received no first or second-place votes, he received 14 overall votes. Saquon Barkley, ahem, ran away with the award with 406 points. Lamar Jackson finished a distant second with 183 points.

Jefferson did win the award in 2022 after catching 128 passes for 1,809 yards, both of which led the league. Could he threaten to win the award again with J.J. McCarthy throwing him passes in 2025 and beyond?

No, the Vikings won't be signing another legendary Packers quarterback

Hours before Super Bowl LIX kicked off, FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer shared that the New York Jets informed Aaron Rodgers that they are moving on from him last week. The move isn’t surprising as the team hired Aaron Glenn as their new head coach, and Rodgers, 41, is coming off one of the worst seasons of his Hall of Fame career.

The news led to humorous memes and tweets about Rodgers following the footsteps of Brett Favre and joining the Minnesota Vikings in 2025. Favre spent the 2008 season with the Jets after 16 years in Green Bay, falling apart down the stretch when a nagging biceps injury hindered his passing. He signed with the Vikings in August 2009, leading Minnesota to the NFC Championship Game.

Although signing Rodgers would make for great storylines for sites like this, there’s little chance the move will come to fruition. First, J.J. McCarthy will likely fight for the Vikings’ QB1 spot. The team wants to see what they have in last year’s 10th overall pick. Even if Rodgers were to start the season, there would be internal and external pressure to start McCarthy. Would Rodgers even want to put himself in that kind of situation?

Second, despite being 14-3 in 2024, the Vikings have to address holes along their offensive and defensive lines and their secondary. They can fix these holes in one offseason, but the roster isn’t a quarterback away like the 2009 squad was.

Finally, would Rodgers and O’Connell be able to coexist? O’Connell is younger than Rodgers, and his playing career never took off as a backup. Would Rodgers be willing to listen to a guy who was inferior at his job? And would O’Connell be able to handle a quarterback who isn’t willing to adhere to his system?

Unless Kevin O’Connell thinks Rodgers is the perfect quarterback for his offense, the closest we get to him being a Viking is likely in a photoshopped image. It’s good fodder between now and free agency with the Super Bowl over, but Vikings fans likely won’t have to do mental gymnastics in cheering for Rodgers in purple.

Who did the Vikings land in the latest ESPN's latest 2025 NFL Mock Draft?

The Minnesota Vikings will draft 24th overall in the 2025 NFL Draft after a 14-3 season that ended much sooner than anyone would have preferred. Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and Kevin O’Connell had some hits in the 2024 class, and they hope that momentum carries over to this class as well.

Mock drafts are the best way to get an idea of how a draft class will go and ESPN dropped their latest edition on Tuesday.

Field Yates of ESPN published his latest mock draft for The Worldwide Leader in Sports. For the Vikings, Yates addressed their defensive tackle need by giving them Derrick Harmon out of Oregon.

Yates discussed the pick, writing, “We know the Vikings can create pressure with their deep edge-rush group and coordinator Brian Flores’ scheme, but one thing they lacked in 2024 was a difference-making pass rusher from the interior. Harmon would fill that gap and more; he led FBS defensive tackles in pressures (34) during his breakout 2024 season at Oregon. Harmon has outstanding length and the power to control opposing offensive linemen at the point of attack.”

Harmon has been seen as a great fit for the team by many outlets. His pass-rush ability would serve as a great compliment to the run-stopping asset that Harrison Phillips currently gives the team.

Lots of mocks to go between now and April but look for this pick to be repeated a time or two.

2025 NFL Draft scouting report: TreVeyon Henderson, RB, Ohio State

The 2025 NFL Draft will begin on April 24, and to prepare for that, we need Vikings fans to be fully prepared in every way. Of course, we will cover players the Vikings will need, but it is important to go beyond that.

In the case of this running back report, we will cover the position here at Vikings Wire because the team needs some better talent at the position.

The Vikings have shown that their offense and what they hope to achieve rely upon the team’s consistent ground attack. The trade for Cam Akers was a nice band-aid approach, but Akers and Ty Chandler aren’t long-term answers. Aaron Jones also has been a breath of fresh air and has made a bigger impact than anyone could have hoped. Even if they bring him back, we need a backup option in place and someone who could step up and become the guy if called upon.

With that in mind, here is a running back prospect who could don a Vikings uniform next season.

2025 NFL Draft: Running Back rankings and scouting reports

The 2025 NFL Draft is poised to be pivotal for many teams, especially teams that are so close to getting over the top, like the Vikings. Some have seen the class as a weaker one at a majority of positions. The Vikings have needs at defensive line, cornerback, and running back, and for their benefit, this class has a lot of talent for those positions.

To make sure that Vikings fans are fully aware of who they could be drafting, we wanted to provide rankings and scouting reports on one of those positions.

We wanted to present you with our own running back rankings and scouting reports. We wrote up and ranked 20 players at the position, odds are at least one of them will be a Viking in 2025. Check out these rankings and our reports to see which one you prefer for your team.

2025 NFL Free Agency: Projected value of Daniel Jones' next contract

The Minnesota Vikings have many difficult questions to answer this offseason before they prepare for the 2025 season. One that no one is talking about is, “Will Daniel Jones be back in Minnesota in 2025?”

The road to the NFL has certainly been a bumpy one for former first-round pick Daniel Jones. Taken sixth overall in the 2019 NFL Draft by the New York Giants, there was an expectation that Jones would come in and return the Giants to the glory and success they experienced under Eli Manning.

It’s hard to expect a Super Bowl, let alone multiple, from any quarterback, but the Giants and their fans certainly expected more success and return on investment than what they got from Jones. Over parts of six seasons in New York, Jones only achieved a winning record once, going 9-6-1 that season in his starts.

Jones never made the playoffs with the Giants, and was unceremoniously released from the team midway through the 2024 season. It was then that he landed in Minnesota with purported quarterback whisperer Kevin O’Connell. O’Connell was instrumental in the turnaround Sam Darnold experienced this season in Minnesota.

With Jones hitting free agency, can he experience a similar career turnaround after a short stay in Minnesota? Will the Vikings bring Jones back to be a backup for J.J. McCarthy? What sort of salary can Jones command on the free agent market?

For an answer to that last question, we can look to Over the Cap, who currently has Jones projected to command a contract of just over $13.3 million. That’s clearly backup money, but would be significantly more than the $1.125 million base salary Jones had with the Vikings in 2024.

As for the question of whether or not Jones will be back with the team next season, it’s hard to say. Jones could be looking for an opportunity to become a starter again — one that he won’t have with the Vikings, at least not to start the season.

The demand for Jones as a starter may not be high, which could ultimately result in a return to Minnesota later on in the free agency period. It could be good for both Jones and McCarthy to have some continuity at the position, and for Jones to have a full season under the tutelage of O’Connell.

With more than $60 million in projected cap space, the Vikings have plenty of room to make a deal happen with Jones, should they want to bring him back.

Vikings trade down in new mock draft, still land offensive line help

Earlier this week, PFF’s Trevor Sikkema mocked Alabama guard Tyler Booker to the Minnesota Vikings at pick No. 24. While I have no issue with the Vikings investing in the interior offensive line or drafting Booker, he is only the 45th-ranked prospect on PFF’s Big Board.

It appears that Alec Lewis of The Athletic is thinking the same thing. He released his first mock draft of the 2025 season on Tuesday. Although Lewis had the Vikings drafting Booker, he projected a trade down to pick No. 29 with the Washington Commanders to select the Alabama guard.

The trade-down would give the Vikings pick No. 29 and Washington’s fourth- and sixth-round picks. Lewis’ trade comp came from 2022 when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers traded pick No. 27 to the Jacksonville Jaguars for pick No. 33 and additional fourth- and sixth-round selections.

Lewis explained that if the Vikings could land Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Milton Williams in free agency, then fortifying the offensive line in the draft would make sense. Booker is familiar with J.J. McCarthy and has been praised for his leadership abilities.

Booker is probably the safest option. Nick Saban recruited him from IMG Academy, where he played for a season with Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy. Booker didn’t transfer once Saban retired, and this past season he was graded as one of the best pass protectors in college football. Brugler called him a “plug-and-play guard who should be a longtime pro.” Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer said Booker is “one of the best leaders I’ve ever been around,” and NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah described Booker as a player with similar leadership traits to the Houston Texans’ Will Anderson Jr.

Booker is 6’5″, 325 pounds, and had an 86.5 pass-block grade in 2024, per PFF. Primarily a left guard in college, Booker would likely stay in Minnesota, taking the incumbent Blake Brandel’s spot.

Lewis made selections for the Vikings’ other draft picks.

Round 3: Josh Farmer, DT, Florida State

Round 4: Trevor Etienne, HB, Georgia (acquired via trade in the first round)

Round 5: Nohl Williams, CB, Cal

Round 5: Clay Webb, G, Jacksonville State

Round 6: Theo Wease, Jr., WR, Missouri (acquired via trade in the first round)

The Booker trade would help the Vikings land a potential starting running back in Etienne. This is a historically deep running back draft, and the added pick would allow the Vikings to take advantage of it without bypassing other needs.

Minnesota aggressively moved up in the 2024 draft to acquire J.J. McCarthy and Dallas Turner, leaving them with limited draft picks in 2025. Trading down and acquiring picks is a viable option for the Vikings when Draft Night comes around.

2025 NFL Draft scouting report: Joshua Farmer, DL, Florida State

The 2025 NFL Draft will begin on April 24, and to prepare for that, we need Vikings fans to be fully prepared in every way. Of course, we will cover players the Vikings will need, but it is important to go beyond that.

In the case of this defensive lineman report, we will cover the position here at Vikings Wire because the team needs some better talent at the position.

The Vikings have Harrison Phillips locked up after extending him earlier in the year. Outside of Phillips, the team has a rotation of players, many of whom are looming free agents. Getting another difference maker in the middle, perhaps one who can pass rush more than Phillips, would be a good compliment.

With that in mind, here is a defensive tackle prospect who could don a Vikings uniform next season.

How many Vikings landed in CBS Sports' Top 100 NFL Free Agents?

The best compliment of an NFL general manager is that they are great roster builders. If you are to receive one of these compliments, there is a bad side to this as well: free agency. Each year, it is impossible for every team to bring back their best players as the open market can price those players out of their old team’s ability to afford them.

The Vikings and Kwesi Adofo-Mensah are going to have some tough decisions to make, and according to CBS Sports, it will be because of the talent they have entering free agency.

Pete Prisco of CBS Sports ranked his top 100 NFL free agents entering the offseason. Of those top 100 players, six Vikings made the list, and they are names you would expect to see. Three players on offense and three players on defense make up this well-rounded group with equal impact on the team. Here is how CBS ranked those six players.

Vikings, Aaron Jones agree to move void date on contract

The Minnesota Vikings have 26 players set to hit free agency next month. Aaron Jones is among the highest-profile free agents, but the Vikings are giving themselves extra time to negotiate a contract to bring him back.

On Saturday, ESPN’s Field Yates reported that the Vikings and Jones agreed to move the void date on his contract from this Monday to the final day before free agency, which begins March 12th. Had the void date not been moved, a $3.2 million cap hit would have triggered on Monday if an extension had not been signed.

This doesn’t guarantee the two sides will reach an agreement, but it shows mutual interest. Last month, Jones said he wished to finish his career with the Vikings.

2024 was one of the most productive seasons of Jones’ career. After seven years in Green Bay, Jones rushed for a career-high 1,138 yards. But he turned 30 in December, an age that can signal a drop-off in production for running backs.

The Vikings would also prefer to take some touches off Jones’ workload to prevent the wear and tear that took him out of several games. Even if they bring him back, they could still be candidates to draft a running back to split carries.

Jones’ leadership was invaluable in 2024, and the Vikings could use it now that several veterans are leaving this offseason. Moving the void date on his contract signals interest. Now, the two teams need to agree on the terms of the contract.

2025 NFL Free Agency: Projected value of Dalton Risner's next contract

The Minnesota Vikings have many difficult questions to answer this offseason before they prepare for the 2025 season. One that no one wants to talk about is, “Will Dalton Risner be back in Minnesota for 2025?”

Risner was with the team in 2023, and his return to the team was up for debate and doubt for much of the offseason. He would ultimately return to the team on a one-year deal despite them signing Blake Brandel. This signaled a competition at the guard spot, with Brandel earning the left guard spot and Risner competing with Ed Ingram for the right guard spot.

Unfortunately for Risner, he never found much consistency, and the Vikings’ interior offensive line was an eye-sore for much of the year.

The team at OTC projects Risner to sign a deal for an average of $3.3 million per year, a slight uptick from his salary of $2.4 million for the 2024 season with the Vikings. For that much money, there is a world where the Vikings could bring him back to partner up with a draft pick to compete for the guard spot, but at this point, why would they run back that scenario again?

The money isn’t much but for a cap-conscious general manager like Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, it could be. I can see a world where we see a similar situation where most of the offseason is spent trying to upgrade the position, with the team referring to Risner later in the offseason.

Vikings 2024 NFL Draft class ranked among the worst in the NFL

Shortcomings in the draft have lingered over Kwesi Adofo-Mensah since he took the Minnesota Vikings general manager job in 2022. His first draft pick came after trading down from pick No. 12 to No. 32, selecting safety Lewis Cine. The Vikings only got ten defensive snaps from Cine over two seasons before releasing him before the 2024 season.

The 2023 draft produced Jordan Addison but not much else. Cornerback Mekhi Blackmon had a solid rookie season but tore his ACL last year on the first day of training camp. He could battle for a starting role in 2025, but we must see how he recovers from his injury.

Those two drafts lead to some concern about the Vikings’ 2024 rookies. J.J. McCarthy is being counted on to be the team’s franchise quarterback, but he missed the season with a torn meniscus. Dallas Turner had 3.5 sacks but was behind Pro Bowl EDGE defenders Andrew Van Ginkel and Jonathan Greenard.

This hurt the Vikings in a recent article released by Gennaro Filice of NFL.com, which ranked all 32 draft classes from last year. Despite having two first-round picks, the Vikings finished 31st in the rankings.

Yet another reason why Kevin O’Connell won Coach of the Year: He guided the Vikings to 14 wins despite receiving minimal returns from the rookie class. Minnesota’s two first-round picks were beset by injury (QB J.J. McCarthy suffered a season-ending meniscus tear in the preseason opener) and inefficacy. . .Sixth-round kicker Will Reichard easily provided the most significant contributions, but a quadricep strain abruptly upended his red-hot start and sent him to the sideline for four games. Down the stretch, he wasn’t as reliable.

The draft class will get a pass for the 2024 season due to veterans stepping up and playing well. But the Vikings will need a lot more from these players in their second year if they want to return to the playoffs in 2025 and beyond.

ESPN has a bold projection for the Vikings 2025 season

The 2024 NFL just ended, but that isn’t going to prevent analysts from predicting the 2025 season. Sure, free agency and the draft haven’t happened yet. Heck, we haven’t even gotten to the combine. But in this impatient world, people need other people to always make grandstanding statements.

ESPN isn’t above this, which may or may not be news to you. They had 13 analysts, and experts predict next year’s Super Bowl winner, MVP, breakout candidate, regression candidate, and one off-season “wish list” move.

The Minnesota Vikings were only mentioned in one category, but they were a popular choice in that category. Three panelists chose the Vikings as the team most likely to take a step back in 2025.

Jeremy Fowler, national NFL reporter: Vikings. A slight step back. They will remain playoff-caliber, but it’s tough to replicate a 14-win season when several key free agents are poised to leave and the offense could be breaking in a new quarterback.

Jason Reid, Andscape senior NFL writer: Vikings. So many things went right for them in 2024. It’s difficult to imagine they will have as many things break their way, especially with a potential change at quarterback.

Mike Tannenbaum, NFL analyst: Vikings. Sam Darnold played extremely well in 2024. But whether it’s him or J.J. McCarthy as the starter in 2025, it will be hard to replicate that kind of quarterback success.

Seeing your favorite team make a list like this is not fun, but it’s hard to argue right now. Aside from losing Christian Darrisaw in Week 8, the Vikings had incredible luck avoiding injuries in 2024. Part of that could be attributed to making changes to the training staff last off-season, but luck is part of it, as football is a violent, dangerous sport.

We also don’t know what to expect from McCarthy in 2025. Everything we’ve heard since the season ended is that he should be ready for training camp, but he will also be a first-time starter. Until we see him perform on the field, assuming he’ll play as well as Darnold did in 2025 is a tall task.

Even if all these experts are correct and the Vikings do take a step back in 2025, that doesn’t necessarily mean they had a bad season or missed the playoffs. Going 10-7 or 9-8 could still get them into the postseason. And if McCarthy shows flashes of being a franchise quarterback, then any regression in wins and losses will be forgivable.

It should be noted the Vikings weren’t the only popular choice to regress. The Detroit Lions also received three votes, with concern regarding them losing both coordinators. And, like the Vikings, the analysts see repeating 14 wins as a tall task.

Vikings lose key member of training staff to the Carolina Panthers

Teams have been actively trying to poach the Minnesota Vikings’ staff after the team went 14-3 in 2024. The Jacksonville Jaguars hired assistant quarterbacks coach Grant Udinski as their offensive coordinator in 2025. Now, the Vikings will need to replace their Director of Player Performance.

On Monday, Joe Person, who covers the Carolina Panthers for The Athletic, announced the Panthers hired Josh Hingst, who had served as the Vikings’ Director of Player Performance from 2021-24.

Hingst had worked for the Philadelphia Eagles from 2013-20, helping them win Super Bowl LII following the 2017 season. While there, Hingst significantly implemented one of the league’s first data-driven training systems.

In Carolina, Hingst will be the Panthers’ strength and conditioning coach. He replaces Jeremy Scott, who joined the Panthers in 2020 when Matt Rhule took over as head coach.

The Vikings now must replace a member who survived the coaching change from Mike Zimmer to Kevin O’Connell. This regime relies heavily on data and analytics, so finding someone fit for the role and embracing that approach to player performance could be more difficult than it would have been ten years ago.

2025 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Will Johnson, CB, Michigan

The 2025 NFL Draft will begin on April 24, and to prepare for that, we need Vikings fans to be fully prepared in every way. Of course, we will cover players the Vikings will need, but it is important to go beyond that.

In the case of this cornerback report, we will cover the position here at Vikings Wire because the team needs some better talent at the position.

The Vikings have found some short-term solutions with a plethora of free-agent signings during training camp, the biggest being Stephon Gilmore. The team drafted Khyree Jackson last year, who tragically lost his life when his car was hit by a drunk driver. He would be set up for a ton of success in this Brian Flores defense, but without him, they need to draft another cornerback in 2025 because the team needs to find some youthful playmakers to inject into the group.

With that in mind, here is a cornerback prospect who could don a Vikings uniform next season.
