Mike Tomlin Win GIF by Pittsburgh Steelers

Well, Mike Tomlin is still here, and it's hard to argue with that decision. Wish we could get beyond these first round playoff exits though. I'll share my moaning and groaning about the Steelers decision making here.

In a month, On March 4, the legal tampering period will start in the NFL when teams can begin negotiations with potential free agents. Official free agency begins on March 12 and this will be a flurry of activity set in motion from the week before.

Once the dust settles on that first wave of free agency, all attention will turn to the 2025 NFL draft. The Steelers currently hold eight picks in the draft, according to Tankathon. Here is how the eight picks break down.

First round – Pick No. 21

Second round – Pick No. 52

Third round – Pick No. 83

Fourth round – Pick No. 122

Fifth round – Pick No. 163

Seventh round – Pick No. 225

Seventh round – Pick No. 231

Seventh round – Pick No. 247

With three seventh-round picks, we could see the Steelers using a pair of those to move up in the middle rounds if they target a specific player. The Steelers have very clear NFL draft needs including wide receiver, cornerback and defensive tackle along with running back and quarterback.

The 2025 NFL draft is scheduled for April 24-26.

One of the biggest surprises from last week’s East/West Shrine Bowl was the play of Arizona running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt. His 97-yard, two-touchdown performance opened plenty of eyes including those of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

According to NFL draft writer Ryan Fowler, the Steelers were one of the teams who met with Croskey-Merrit during the Shrine Bowl.

Croskey came to the University of Arizona in 2024 after a breakout season with New Mexico rushing for 1,190 yards and 17 rushing touchdowns. But after only one game with Arizona, he was deemed ineligible for the rest of the year.

A headliner in Frisco last week and the offensive MVP of the game, Arizona RB Jacory Croskey-Merritt met with a long list of teams at Shrine, including the following:

• Broncos
• Patriots
• Steelers
• Panthers
• Commanders
• Eagles
• Colts
• Bears
• 49ers
• Packers

— Ryan Fowler (@_RyanFowler_) February 5, 2025

The Steelers could be hoping to land another Jaylen Warren as an undrafted free agent. There’s no doubt the skills are there with impressive agility and explosion. But he will be a 24 year old rookie and no matter how well he did in a single exhibition, that is going to hurt his draft stock.

It’s been a long time coming, but iconic Croke Park Stadium in Dublin, Ireland, will finally host the Pittsburgh Steelers in its first NFL regular-season game in 2025.

This will mark a significant milestone in American football’s expansion into Ireland. According to Ireland’s RTE, negotiations between the NFL and the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) are in advanced stages, but an official announcement is anticipated before the upcoming Super Bowl.

Pittsburgh last played at Croke Park in a 1997 preseason game versus the Chicago Bears when the Steelers won 30-17.

With deep Irish roots, the Rooney family has been instrumental in championing this initiative. Team owner Art Rooney II talked about it in January.

I think we’re still optimistic that it’s going to happen. We’re hopefully going to have an announcement soon, but it’s not official until it’s official. We just have to wait until all those pieces fall in place.

The NFL’s expansion into Ireland reflects its broader international strategy to grow the sport. This event aims to establish an annual NFL fixture in Dublin, similar to those in London.

The game, which could feature a matchup against the Green Bay Packers, is tentatively scheduled for September or October.

Trade rumors and speculation have been running rampant since former All-Pro WR Cooper Kupp announced on social media that his time with the Los Angeles Rams would be coming to an end via trade. Although Kupp expressed his disapproval of the eventual move, he is ready to exceed expectations in 2025.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are currently listed by the popular sports betting site Bovada as favorites to land Kupp, with +150 odds. The runner-up in betting odds to land Kupp is none other than the Los Angeles Chargers at +250, followed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Detroit Lions, who are tied at +750.

Betting odds are hardly a reliable source for predicting where a player will definitively land. However, it is a positive sign that the Pittsburgh Steelers may be serious contenders to acquire Kupp from the Rams.

There is no exact word on what the Rams would actually demand for Kupp, but many expect the trade compensation to include one or two Day 3 draft selections, which the Pittsburgh Steelers should be more than capable of sending their way.

One wide receiver has taken the 2025 offseason trade rumors by storm—and that is none other than Los Angeles Rams superstar WR Cooper Kupp.

Kupp announced on social media that the Rams informed him of their desire to trade him this offseason, much to the delight of the Pittsburgh Steelers. NFL insider Ian Rapoport provided the Black and Gold with even better news—the Rams are willing to take on some of Kupp’s contract.

Rapoport described the Rams’ willingness to pay part of the money Kupp is owed on his current contract, such as covering his $7.5 million signing bonus, in order to “make the trade a little easier.”

The trade already seemed like a slam dunk for the Pittsburgh Steelers, especially considering that Kupp isn’t expected to demand much in trade compensation due to his age and previous injury concerns. However, the news that the Steelers could acquire him without taking on the entirety of his nearly $30 million owed in 2025 makes this deal even more of a steal.

It’s Super Bowl week and since the Pittsburgh Steelers don’t have anything going on, we decided to update our seven-round mock draft. The 2025 NFL draft is going to be vital for a Steelers team that continues to struggle in the playoffs. The Steelers offseason needs are very clear and while we expect Pittsburgh to be players in free agency, this draft hits all the biggest needs.

If the Pittsburgh Steelers are able to pull off a trade for Rams WR Cooper Kupp, the Steel City should seriously consider trading away WR George Pickens.

Pickens’ attitude and maturity were consistently in the headlines for the wrong reasons throughout the 2024 season. From hiding in an equipment room to avoid media responsibilities to displaying profane messages on his mouthguard, as well as being late to an important Week 17 matchup against the Chiefs—and much more—Pickens’ negatives far outweigh his positives.

Kupp is the literal antithesis of Pickens—humble, hard-working, and a great teammate—while Pickens can be described as braggadocious, lacking punctuality, and putting his emotions over the team’s desire to win.

Pickens’ contract will expire at the end of the 2025 season, and if the Pittsburgh Steelers are hesitant to re-sign him due to character concerns, trading him seems like a no-brainer.

However, with Calvin Austin III being the next man up in the receiver room, it’s no wonder Pickens still remains in Pittsburgh. But acquiring Kupp could jumpstart the trade process, helping the Steelers avoid another Diontae Johnson mistake.

Be warned that I’m going to say something here that is going to ruffle the feathers of many Pittsburgh Steelers fans. And while some of this is hindsight, a lot of this could be seen coming a mile away and is now coming to fruition.

One of the biggest factors in why the Pittsburgh Steelers continue to struggle with getting over the playoff hump is because of a failed 2020 NFL draft. And when we say failed, yes we include the 2019 trade that cost the Steelers a first-round pick in exchange for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick.

Is Fitzpatrick a great player? Yes. Has he been a great player for the entirety of his time in Pittsburgh? No. That No. 18 pick could have been used much better for a position of need.

If the Steelers don’t trade for Fitzpatrick, they keep that pick and could have used it to select a generational talent who could have really helped this team down the line.

2020 NFL redraft

First round – WR Justin Jefferson

The Steelers viewed wide receiver as a top need based on how the rest of the draft played out and Jefferson has established himself a one of the three best receivers in the league.

Second round – QB Jalen Hurts

Ben Roethlisberger is coming off an awful injury where he missed almost an entire season and could have really used a plan beyond what they had at quarterback. Hurts has quickly become one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.

You could leave every other pick exactly the same and this becomes the draft that turns the Steelers franchise around. Pittsburgh was already ridiculously invested in defense so this draft bringing the offense up to speed made far more sense.

So in the final analysis, the Steelers could have had Jefferson and Hurts but instead got Fitzpatrick and Claypool. Of all the questionable moves this team has made or not, none sting quite like this except for passing on Lamar Jackson for Terrell Edmunds in the 2018 NFL draft and ranks well ahead of the Steelers trading up for linebacker Devin Bush in the 2019 NFL draft.

Aside from offensive linemen, who never get to come off the field, most positions on both sides of the football are revolving doors for substitutions. But there are always a handful of players who never seem to come off the field.

One such player is Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker T.J. Watt. One of the premier edge rushers in the league, Watt is one of those guys who is never going to pull himself out of a game and only comes out if he must. Judging by the numbers, he is truly among the elite in the league when it comes to reps.

Highest percentage of snaps played at each position.

No edge rusher played a higher percentage of their team’s snaps in 2024 than Watt. According to Pickinem, Watt played a league-best 85.9 percent of his team’s snaps. A remarkable number when you consider how defenses adjust personnel groupings to account for situational football.

According to NFL reporter Jay Glazer, the Pittsburgh Steelers will not pursue quarterback Russell Wilson and attempt to re-sign him during free agency.

The Steelers brought in Wilson along with Justin Fields last offseason in hopes of turning the Steelers offense around after the retirement of Ben Roethlisberger. Unfortunately, it was more of the same with the Steelers finishing 9-7 last season and getting bounced in the first round of the playoffs.

Biggest scoop yet. Jay Glazer says Russell Wilson won’t be back with Steelers. Doesn’t sound bullish on Fields either. FYI-Glazer is Tomlin’s best friend in football media. pic.twitter.com/X4NrCBV5Hx

Thursday night the NFL Thhanded out their annual award at the NFL Honors. The only Pittsburgh Steelers who was in the running for any of the end-of-season awards was edge defender T.J. Watt. He was a finalist for Defensive Player of the Years but the odds were against him.

Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II won the award and rightfully so. Surtain was far and away the best cornerback in the NFL. Watt ended up finishing fourth behind Surtain, Bengals EDGE Trey Hendrickson and Browns EDGE Myles Garrett. Watt did get three first-place votes.

Here’s how the voting broke down for the top four.

Patrick Surtain II 26-11-2-4-1: 330
Trey Hendrickson 11-10-9-8-2: 205
Myles Garrett 5-11-12-8-5: 162
T.J. Watt 3-7-8-11-3: 114

Watt finished 2024 with 11.5 sacks. This was his worst season since his rookie year if you exclude 2022 where he missed six games with injury. Watt failed to put up any stats in the team’s final two games which was completely out of character for him and really hurt the final numbers.

The reality is Watt’s teammate, defensive tackle Cam Heyward was a far more deserving candidate after racking up eight sacks and 11 passes defended as a defensive tackle.

Several enormous questions surround two of the most important positional groups for the Pittsburgh Steelers offense in 2025—who the starting quarterback and running back will be.

Jaylen Warren, having spent his first three years in the NFL with the Steel City, is expected to be offered a tender by the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to Gerry Dulac.

A tender would ultimately allow Warren, who is a restricted free agent, to negotiate with other NFL teams while the Steelers retain the right to match the deal. Depending on which tender is offered, such as a restricted free agent tender, the team hoping to sign Warren would have to give up a first-, second-, or third-round pick if the Steelers choose not to match the offer.

Dulac had this to say on the matter:

“Meantime, the Steelers are expected to tender an offer to Jaylen Warren, who is a restricted free agent. At the very least, it would be a right-of-first-refusal offer that would cost them $3.185 million in 2025.”

The right-of-first-refusal offer is obviously the bare minimum of tenders, and it’s hard to imagine any of the other 31 NFL teams sending a first-, second-, or third-round draft selection in exchange for Warren.

The Pittsburgh Steelers aren’t playing in the Super Bowl this weekend but while we watch the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles, let’s look back at the Steelers six Super Bowl wins and rank them.

Michael Vick, Philip Rivers, and Drew Brees all have one thing in common—former New York Giants QB Eli Manning would take former Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger over every one of them.

Manning was asked which quarterback he would take when given two options, not knowing who would come next. He kicked off his first three selections by choosing Roethlisberger three straight times—over Rivers, Brees, and Vick—until finally selecting his brother Peyton Manning over the legendary Steelers QB.

Manning is one of the most accomplished Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks in recent history, defeating who many consider to be the G.O.A.T. of the National Football League, QB Tom Brady, in two separate head-to-head Super Bowl matchups—though Manning actually chose Brady to surpass his brother in the final selection of all-time quarterbacks.

Roethlisberger is no stranger to Super Bowl championships, winning two himself in Super Bowl XL and XLIII. In some ways, Eli and Big Ben are more alike than people realize—both favoring their two Super Bowl wins over personal accolades.

According to NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport, the San Francisco 49ers are going to try to trade wide receiver Deebo Samuel this offseason. Last season Samuel was rumored to be a player the Pittsburgh Steelers were interested in so they should once again be one of the teams to reach out.

Samuel is in the final year of his contract and has a 2025 cap hit of $15.896 million. This is a bargain compared to the top wide receiver contracts in the league but Samuel has never really established himself as a true No. 1 receiver.

Nevertheless, Samuel paired up with George Pickens would be a dynamic tandem as Samuel excels at working inside and can take advantage of the coverage Pickens draws downfield.

The #49ers are expected to explore trading star WR Deebo Samuel, sources say.

In what could be a wild offseason, a parting for Samuel and SF is not guaranteed, but it may make sense for all parties.

My story: https://t.co/g5WdqHQXfvhttps://t.co/g5WdqHQXfv

Pittsburgh should have multiple options if they want to upgrade the wide receiver position via trade. In addition to Samuel, the Los Angeles Rams are going to try to trade Cooper Kupp in the offseason as well.

How Chase Claypool ironically made the Eagles Super Bowl LIX champions

The Pittsburgh Steelers should be considered partial owners of the Philadelphia Eagles’ Lombardi Trophy—after all, drafting Chase Claypool in 2020 is the only reason the Kansas City Chiefs lost Super Bowl LIX.

The Eagles Super Bowl MVP QB Jalen Hurts and the Steelers were linked together in the buildup to the 2020 NFL Draft, even to the point where the Eagles QB believed he was going to Pittsburgh when he received his draft day phone call.

However, as the Black and Gold faithful are well aware, the Steelers used the 49th overall pick in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft to select Claypool, and Hurts was drafted just four picks later.

In five seasons, Hurts has been selected to two Pro Bowls, named Second-Team All-Pro, and is now a Super Bowl LIX champion along with being named Super Bowl MVP.

In Claypool’s first five seasons, he has bounced around from the Steelers to the Bears, to the Dolphins, to the Bills, and is now completely out of the NFL.

The city of Philadelphia owes their second to Super Bowl championship to the incompetence of former Steelers GM Kevin Colbert.

New ESPN mock draft goes way off script for the Steelers

When the Pittsburgh Steelers go on the clock in the first round of the 2025 NFL, they will have a huge decision to make. The Steelers watched their season collapse and the entire team understands how important this pick could be for the future of the franchise.

So when ESPN NFL draft writer Field Yates put out his post-Super Bowl mock draft, we wanted to see what direction Yates went. We have to admit it was something of a surprise when Yates opted for Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart as the third quarterback off the board.

This projection represents a big rise up the board from where Dart currently ranks outside my top 32, but quarterbacks always have a chance to climb given positional value. Keep an eye on Dart here as we get closer to April.

While we are big fans of Dart and think he’s the quarterback everyone thought Kenny Pickett would be but better, taking him at No. 21 feels like a reach similar to the Pickett choice.

Seeing wide receivers Emeka Egbuka and Luther Burden still on the board along with defensive tackle Kenneth Grant makes us wonder if reaching for a quarterback early helps this team more than any of those picks. The Steelers are set to lose multiple wide receivers and are still lacking a true No. 1 and starting defensive lineman Larry Ogunjobi is a prime candidate to be a salary-cap casualty.
