2025 player review Marc-Edouard Vlasic: One more season

The most senior defenseman on the San Jose Sharks this season, Marc-Edouard Vlasic barely makes the cut in terms of our player reviews. Injuries kept him out of the lineup for a majority of the season and it was only much later in the season, January, when he was considered healthy enough to play for the team. In total, Vlasic played 27 games for the Sharks last season.

2025 NHL Draft: The case for Anton Frondell

It is no secret that this year’s draft will involve some tough choices. On May 5, the San Jose Sharks earned themselves the 2nd overall pick in the 2025 NHL draft, and boy, does the team have choices. If you aren’t familiar, here is a quick breakdown of a few of the top possible choices: There’s Matthew Schaefer, an elite skating transitional defenseman who controls the tempo from…

2025 NHL Draft: The case for Matthew Schaefer

While Matthew Schaefer is the presumed number one overall pick and likely to be drafted by the New York Islanders on draft day, you can never truly predict what a team is going to do. Take, for instance, last season when the Anaheim Ducks selected Beckett Sennecke third overall or when Shane Wright fell to fourth overall in the 2022 draft. The point is, you can’t always tell what the team in front…

2025 NHL Draft: The case for Michael Misa

In our 2025 NHL Draft preview, we’ve explored our ideal option based on need for the San Jose Sharks, defenseman Matthew Schaefer, and we’ve explored a player that has an outside shot of becoming the number two overall pick, forward Anton Frondell. However, it’s nearly a consensus among pundits that if the Sharks are selecting the second-best player in the NHL draft, then the team is selecting…

2025 NHL Draft: The case for trading up

There is one more option that we need to explore when it comes to the second overall pick in the NHL draft and that’s the case for trading up. The Sharks have one glaring need in the team’s prospect pool and that’s at defense. The presumptive number one overall draft pick, Matthew Schaefer, fills that need. Schaefer is expected to be more skilled, be a better skater and have a higher hockey IQ…

Quentin Musty Ready to Make an Impact in the NHL

Quentin Musty has quickly become one of the most exciting prospects in the San Jose Sharks organization, and he seems primed to make an impact at the NHL level, sooner rather than later. Musty started the 2024-25 season with the Sudbury Wolves of the Ontario Hockey League, following an extended holdout as he awaited a trade that would never come. In the OHL, his offensive production did…

2025 NHL Draft: Potential defensemen at 30 & 33

In a series of previous posts, we looked at what the San Jose Sharks could do with the second overall pick in the NHL Entry Draft on June 27. However, the Sharks also have a second pick in the first round, 30th overall. The team also has the 33rd overall, the first pick on day two of the draft, which is close enough to the first round that we figured we’d include it here. The two picks mean there…

Sharks place Vlasic on waivers for purposes for buyout

The San Jose Sharks have placed veteran defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic on waivers for the purpose of buyout. In a news release this morning, General Manager Mike Grier announced that the team would buyout the final year of Vlasic’s contract. “This was a difficult decision to make today, with how much Marc has meant to the San Jose organization for 19 years,” said Grier.

2025 NHL Draft: Getting to Know Cole McKinney

With the 53rd pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, the San Jose Sharks selected center Cole McKinney from the U.S. National Team Development Program. He will be headed to the University of Michigan next season, and while he might not have been a flashy first-rounder, McKinney brings a super dependable and strong game that Sharks fans might come to appreciate in a big way. So…who is this guy?

Quick Analysis of every Sharks pick in the 2025 draft

In recent Sharks terms, it was a relatively quiet draft day. During the General Manager Mike Grier era of the draft, there were trades to move up to grab the players that the Sharks had on the team’s board. However, this year, the Sharks seemed content to stand pat with the picks the team had. The Sharks didn’t make many moves, untempted, even though teams like the Pittsburgh Penguins and Chicago…

San Jose Sharks select Simon Wang 33rd overall

The San Jose Sharks draft Simon “Haoxi” Wang with the 33rd overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft. The defenseman is a very large player, measuring in at 6-foot-6 and 223 pounds. Wang is just the third Chinese-born player to be drafted in the NHL, though he has trained in North America for the last few years, playing as a teen in Toronto and most recently in the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL).

Heavy lifting: Contracts Sharks can absorb to reach cap floor

The San Jose Sharks are heading into free agency with a lot of work to do just to reach the cap floor. The team has $51.41 million committed to players and needs to commit an additional $19.19 million to reach the $70.6 million floor. Some of that will be dished out in free agency, where it’s expected the Sharks will try to land a big-name free agent. Whether the team succeeds is another matter…

Free agent defensemen the Sharks could target

Update: The Buffalo Sabres didn’t qualify Jacob Bernard-Docker and he might be a good one for the Sharks to take a shot on. The 25-year-old had eight points in 40 games with the Sabres last season and averaged 13:37 per game. But you have to wonder on a team like the Sharks with fewer NHL defensemen, especially on the right-side, if a player like Bernard-Docker would get more of an opportunity.
