Barracuda exits: The bar has been raised

The San Jose Barracuda wrapped up its season with a mix of growth and some unfinished business, and the players’ exit interviews gave us a glimpse into where each player and the team are headed. For a group filled with rookies, vets and everything in between, there was a clear thread of hunger that ran through each conversation. Take Collin Graf, who jumped into the pro grind straight out of…

What we know about San Jose’s free agents

With the season over and some time before the draft, the San Jose Sharks can begin to examine which of the free agents the team wants to keep in the fold and which ones it will allow to walk. With reinforcements coming in the form of the 2023 and 2024 draft picks, it looks like the Sharks will have some serious decisions to make about some young restricted free agents as well as some of the…

Way, way too early look at Sharks forward lines

Forget those idiots in the postseason (secretly, we’re jealous), it’s more fun to look into our crystal ball and guess what the San Jose Sharks could look like on opening night. There’s been a lot of roster turnover in the past few months, giving us small glimpses of what San Jose is hoping to do with the team’s young players, who the Sharks are hoping to sign in the offseason and what the roster…

Should the Sharks sign Mitch Marner?

With the Toronto Maple Leafs officially out of the playoffs, Toronto fans as well as management are understandably unhappy with the way the team exited the second round. There is a general consensus that this is the end of the so-called “Core Four” of Auston Matthews, William Nylander, Mitch Marner and John Tavares. Marner and Tavares are the only players up for contract renewals…

Way, way too early look at the Sharks defense, goaltending

In a previous post, we took a look at what the Sharks forward lines could look like next season. We found that aside from hoping that prospects take another step in the offseason, there won’t be much addition on offense during free agency. The same might be said for defense, where the Sharks are hoping that young players like Shakir Mukhamadullin, Luca Cagnoni and even Timothy Liljegren take a…

2025 player review Will Smith: A tale of two halves

The San Jose Sharks started rookie Will Smith’s season with a plan. Smith would be flanked by veterans like Mikael Granlund, Alexander Wennberg and Tyler Toffoli. There would be no pressure to succeed and certainly no pressure to play center, the more difficult of the forward positions. Smith was never threatened with a trip to the AHL, and he was given planned off days to allow for development.

2025 player review Henry Thrun: Slowing down in development

24-year-old Henry Thrun has finished his second season with the San Jose Sharks and while it was not a complete season because of injury, he still managed to play a total of 60 games with the Sharks. Thrun suffered an upper-body injury at the end of February and had to leave the game against the Montreal Canadiens. He missed more than a week of play before he was placed on injured reserve.

Sharks sign four, lose Andrew Poturalski

General Manager Mike Grier is making some moves as the Sharks get things squared away before the draft and free agency. On Thursday, the team announced a new, one-year contract with defenseman Shakir Mukhamadullin worth $1 million. “Shakir earned the opportunity to be a part of the Sharks, and was able to get some valuable experience playing against quality opponents that helped aid his…

Ryan Warsofsky brings gold and grit back to San Jose

In a time when the San Jose Sharks were searching for identity and inspiration, their head coach, Ryan Warsofsky, delivered both, halfway across the world in Stockholm, Sweden. He guided Team USA to a historic 1-0 overtime victory over Switzerland in the 2025 IIHF World Championship final. Warsofsky ended a 92-year gold medal drought for the Americans, marking a huge moment for U.S. hockey.

2025 player review Klim Kostin: Not the right fit

Klim Kostin believes he has a lot to offer an NHL team, but it’s clear that he’s not giving the Sharks’ management what it’s looking for. Like a few other players on the Sharks roster this season, Kostin was in the position to assert himself and claim a spot on the roster night in and night out. However, the forward lacked the consistency to get into and stay in the lineup. What resulted was a…

2025 player review Nikolai Kovalenko: Deserving of a shot?

25-year-old Nikolai Kovalenko had an interesting first season in the NHL. Kovalenko started out with the Colorado Avalanche, finding himself with limited playing time in his first 28 games of the season. But, on Dec. 9, 2024, the Avs traded Kovalenko to the San Jose Sharks in a package deal that saw the Sharks send Mackenzie Blackwood the other way. The trade appeared to be a chance for…

Every Sharks pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft

With the Dallas Stars officially eliminated from the playoffs, we now know (almost) all of the draft picks the San Jose Sharks will hold in the upcoming NHL Entry Draft, barring any trades before draft day. (Thank goodness for the people who obsessively update Wikipedia because it means that we know what the draft order is for the Sharks almost immediately after it happens. We salute you.)…

2025 player review Barclay Goodrow: Borderline fourth-liner

The reunion of Barclay Goodrow and the San Jose Sharks was rocky this offseason. It was mired in controversy as the New York Rangers found a way around Goodrow’s 15-team no-trade list by simply placing him on waivers. And while Goodrow presumably had the Sharks on that no-trade list, he never held the Sharks responsible for how things played out. He was upfront that his anger was directed at New…

2025 player review Jack Thompson: A sheltered first season

The San Jose Sharks have a deficit of right-shot defensemen and Jack Thompson is in the enviable position of being able to fill that need. Last season, Thompson jumped back and forth between the Sharks and the Barracuda. The Sharks had Jan Rutta, Cody Ceci and Matt Benning as NHL level defensemen on the roster to start the season, leaving Thompson to start out with the Barracuda. A trade early in…

2025 player review Alex Wennberg: Time to rethink his role

The San Jose Sharks loosened up the purse strings on July 1, 2024 and started actively looking for veteran players who would help guide the new generation of Sharks into the NHL. The team added Tyler Toffoli to the fold to give rookie Macklin Celebrini a bona fide shooter to play alongside. The Sharks also added Alex Wennberg, a defensively responsible forward able to play the two-way game that…
