Monday, 22 September 2014 Newly promoted SC Paderborn is undefeated and in first place of the German Bundesliga with 2 Wins, 2 Draws and 0 Losses.

601 Days after leading the Bundesliga, SC Paderborn had one tiny, final chance to get to 16th place and participate in a relegation playoff series to perhaps avoid the drop to the third tier, yet their home loss coupled with wins by Frankfurt (also relegated) and Duisburg sealed the small clubs fate.
With this relegation they did manage to add their names to an incredibly short and inglorious list. What list is that? The list of teams relegated twice in a row after playing in the German Bundesliga. This feat was last accomplished by FC St. Pauli thirteen years ago and also includes teams like SSV Ulm, Spielvereinigung Unteraching, Fortuna Düsseldorf and yes, sadly my Kickers Offenbach are also on said list.
The results from something like this can be quite fatal as clubs such as Ulm, Unterhaching and Offenbach never really recovered from this and today find themselves playing in the Regionalliga (4th tier) with Ulm actually having played in the 5th tier this past season.
St. Pauli came in fourth in Bundesliga 2 this season, albeit 12 points back of third place, and Fortuna Düsseldorf barely escaped the drop themselves by coming in 3 points above the drop/playoff line.
So how does this happen? The drop from the Bundesliga to the Bundesliga 2 after the 2015 season was not really unexpected considering the challenges that faced Paderborn compared to the other teams with much higher financial resources in this day and age. Somewhat surprising, however, was the fact that the small club was still mathematically alive on the last match day, and only a home loss to VfB Stuttgart (which saved them that year) coupled with a win by Hamburg (allowing them to move into the relegation Playoff spot) doomed them.
