Rivera to have surgery

Yankees closer Mariano Rivera will have surgery on his vocal cords this Friday.

His agent, Fern Cuza, said that the surgery is not expected to effect his pitching ability next season.

Rivera is not expected to be able to speak for a week, but should be fully recovered by the end of the month.

I would assume it would not affect his pitching... What was the purpose of this surgery?

To remove ployps or something....whatever those are...I'm not really sure.
