Although the Pirates had another disappointing year, they did have a big bright spot in rookie starting pitcher Paul Skenes.

Skenes took the league by storm after his debut in 2024 with the Pirates.

He won the National League Rookie of the Year Award and was named the starting pitcher for the National League in the All-Star Game.

The picture of Skenes and his LSU gymnastics/social media influencer girlfriend has been making waves on social media.

Skenes is preparing for his sophomore season in the MLB after completely dominating the league in 2024.

In 2024, Skenes started 23 games where he held a record of 11-3 with a 1.96 ERA and 170 strikeouts in 133.0 innings pitched.

The Pirates have struggled immensely as of late, but with Skenes headlining their starting rotation, they could be a team to watch in the coming seasons.

It will be hard for Skenes to beat the season he had in 2024, so it will be interesting to see if he makes any adjustments as he heads into the 2025 season.

The Pirates will look for their first NL Central title in franchise history as their last division title came back in 1992 when they resided in the NL East.

The Pittsburgh Pirates haven’t made the playoffs since 2015 and finished with their sixth straight losing season in 2024 with a record of 76-86.

Although recent history hasn’t been kind to the organization, they finally have hope for the future as rookie starting pitcher Paul Skenes made his debut in 2024.

Skenes took the league by storm and ended up winning NL Rookie of the Year and finishing in the top three in the NL Cy Young Award voting.

Pirates second basemen Nick Gonzales recently revealed his honest thoughts on Skenes following his rookie season.

“He’s a workhorse, he does what he needs to do every single day,” Gonzales said, via MLB Network Radio on SirisuXM.

The Pirates switched to the NL Central from the NL East in 1994, and they have never won a division title since the realignment.

Skenes gives the Pirates their best shot in a long time of doing so and also breaking the streak of nine straight seasons missing the postseason.

In his rookie campaign, Skenes started 23 games and posted a record of 11-3 with a 1.96 ERA and 170 strikeouts in 133.0 innings pitched.

He was so impressive from the get-go that he was chosen to start the All-Star Game for the National League.

Skenes is only 22 years old, and Gonzales mentions how he has a veteran mentality with his preparation and demeanor on the mound.

The Pirates will look to make some moves this offseason to build around Skenes in hopes of contending for their sixth World Series title in franchise history.

The Pirates have not had great teams as of late, but the emergence of Skenes gives them a true number-one pitcher to start and build around for the future.

With the offseason filled with big-name free agents, the Pirates will have the opportunity to add some offensive weapons to their roster before the 2025 season.

Analyst Reveals What Pirates Need To Add This Offseason

The Pittsburgh Pirates have a respectable five World Series titles in their franchise history, but recent years have not been too kind to them.

After finishing the 2024 season with a record of 76 wins and 86 losses, the Pirates missed the postseason for the ninth straight season and had their sixth straight losing season.

Although the 2024 season was not great in general, the Pirates did have a bright spot in rookie starting pitcher Paul Skenes who won the NL ROTY Award and is a finalist for the NL Cy Young Award.

MLB Analyst Jason Mackey revealed what he thinks the Pirates need to do this offseason.

“The Pirates need to land a big bat for first base,” Mackey said.

Mackey mentions that keeping Bryan Reynolds at first base doesn’t seem like the answer and that he would keep him in left field and Oneil Cruz in center field and sign a regular first baseman.

He also mentions some names that intrigue him at the position including Paul Goldschmidt, Ryan Mountcastle, and Yandy Diaz.

The Pirates have not had a postseason run past the National League Division Series since 1992, and haven’t appeared in a World Series since 1979, which was their last World Series title.

With the free agent class being full of big names this offseason, the Pirates should have the opportunity to sign some helpful players before the 2025 season.

It appears that the Pirates have found their ace of the future with Skenes, and they just need to add some offensive support to attempt and get the team back to a competitive level.

Stats show just how impressive Skenes’ rookie season was for the Pirates.

According to MLB Network on ‘X,’ Skenes tied the MLB record for the lowest ERA by a rookie pitcher since the stat became official in the year 1912.

Skenes was not only selected to the all-star game in his rookie season but he was selected to start the game for the National League.

The Pirates have not been successful in the past handful of seasons, but now their organization has hope after Skenes’ emergence.

The Pittsburgh Pirates had another disappointing season in 2024 when they finished last in the NL Central with a record of 76-86.

They missed the postseason for a ninth straight year and had their sixth straight losing season.

Although the season overall was a disappointment, the Pirates did have one bright spot in rookie pitcher Paul Skenes, who was the starter for the NL in the All-Star Game.

Now, the Pirates are making an incredible offer for one of his baseball cards.

“The Pirates are offering 30 years of season tickets behind home plate and more in exchange for this 1/1 Paul Skenes Debut Patch card,” B/R Walk-Off wrote on X.

Along with the decades of season tickets, the Pirates are offering a spring training experience, meet and greet with Skenes, two Skenes autographed jerseys, and more.

Some people think Skenes is going to be the next great pitcher in the MLB, and he is off to a good start with his 2024 numbers.

The Pirates went all in on getting this card, and it will be interesting to see if they are offering enough to obtain it.

Analyst Says 1 Young Pitcher Is The ‘Next Great One’

Logo Major League Baseball on Sony TV

The Pittsburgh Pirates have had a rough stretch of baseball over the past few years as they missed the playoffs for the ninth year in a row in 2024.

After finishing with a record of 76 wins and 86 losses, the Pirates had their sixth losing season in a row.

Although the team overall has been disappointing, there was a bright spot in the Pirates lineup.

According to MLB Network on ‘X,’ Paul Skenes is a finalist for both the National League Rookie of the Year and the National League Cy Young Award.

MLB Analyst Ron Darling said this about Skenes, “This is the next great one.”

"This is the next great one."

Skenes pitched in his first season with the Pirates in 2024 and started 23 games for the club.

Through those 23 games started, Skenes had a record of 11 wins and three losses with a 1.96 ERA and 170 strikeouts in 133.0 innings pitched.

Skenes is a finalist for both the NL ROY Award and the NL Cy Young Award, which illustrates how dominant he was during his rookie campaign.

Darling believes Skenes is the next great pitcher in the MLB and points out that his fastball velocity averages above 98 miles per hour.

The Pirates have not had many things to be excited about in recent history, but Skenes could change all of that if he can stay healthy.

Since winning the World Series in 1979, the Pirates have only made the playoffs six times, and they haven’t won a division title since 1992.

All eyes will be on Skenes next season to see if he can replicate the dominant season that he put together in 2024.

Paul Skenes Reveals Which NFL Team He Roots For

Paul Skenes has taken baseball by storm and become the type of throwback ace that fans haven’t seen in a long time as he is making a push to win both National League Rookie of the Year and Cy Young in his debut season with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The ace has been winning fans over by giving plenty of insight into his personality and all the things that have made him a big ticket draw so far, and ahead of the 2024 NFL season, he recently revealed which NFL team he roots for.

Skenes appeared on Barstool Sports’ Pardon My Take recently and shared that he has been a massive Pittsburgh Steelers fan his entire life, saying he has been a fan “my whole life” and adding it has been interesting how Steelers fans come to Pirates games just to yell and drink and have a good time.

Paul Skenes has been a MASSIVE Steelers fan his entire life

— Pardon My Take (@PardonMyTake) September 6, 2024

Letting Pirates fans know that he has been a lifelong Steelers fan despite growing up in Southern California is only going to make him a more beloved figure in Pittsburgh, a city that absolutely loves its football.

It’s also believable since Los Angeles didn’t get pro football back until Skenes was already a teenager, so if he was into football as a lad, he surely could have adopted the Steelers as his team.

If the Steelers don’t get what they need out of their quarterback battle between Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, perhaps the 6’6″ Skenes with his rocket arm can make a quick trip across town to take over at QB.

Mark Cuban Takes Jab At Pirates Owner

Owner Mark Cuban of the Dallas Mavericks

Major League Baseball isn’t what it used to be.

While other major sports leagues have become somewhat more global and the game has evolved, there’s a common sentiment about baseball going in the opposite direction.

Perhaps it is younger generations not being able to sit through an entire nine-inning game, or perhaps it’s the league’s inability or unwillingness to adapt to the perks and demands of the modern market.

Whatever the case, the fact that teams aren’t even forced to spend money has led to a major disparity in competitiveness that has made the league somewhat predictable and boring to watch.

That’s why Mark Cuban gave up on his dream of buying the Pittsburgh Pirates.

If someone offered you a job, that paid 25m or more per year, to stand in Market Square and let the entire city of Pittsburgh yell at you, would you take that job ?

That job is owning the Pirates.

Why would they sell ? https://t.co/PI8se807lH

— Mark Cuban (@mcuban) August 29, 2024

The business mogul took to social media to take a big jab at the ownership, stating that they pretty much make $25 million a year to allow fans to yell at them.

Simply put, the Pirates don’t need to spend money because the league doesn’t require them to do so.

They get revenue because of ticket sales, TV broadcasts, etc, so it’s pretty much a fool-proof passive income.

That’s a big issue with Major League Baseball and why you see other teams like the Oakland Athletics perennially struggling and not even spending on their payroll.

The league will have to do something about that.

And after watching Cuban turn the Dallas Mavericks into a World Class organization, the fans will most definitely not be happy that he wasn’t able to purchase his hometown baseball team.
