Padres Could Be On The Verge Of Making Big Move

The San Diego Padres made the postseason for the first time since 2022 after finishing with a record of 93-69 and second in the National League West.

Although the Padres have a roster loaded with talent, they were eliminated by the rival Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Division Series.

This offseason, the Padres have not made any notable acquisitions so far, but they lost a couple of key players, relief pitcher Tanner Scott and outfielder Jurickson Profar.

However, the Padres could be on the verge of making a big move as two key players reportedly are on the trade block.

“Dylan Cease and Michael King are in play on the trade market,” MLB Network wrote on X.

The Padres appear to be running into some salary issues, which could be why a big trade is in the works.

Cease pitched five seasons for the Chicago White Sox before coming to the Padres in 2024.

Last season, Cease started 33 games and was 14-11 with a 3.47 ERA and 224 strikeouts in 189.1 innings pitched.

King pitched five seasons for the New York Yankees before coming to the Padres in 2024 in the Juan Soto trade.

Last season, King started 30 games and was 13-9 with a 2.95 ERA and 201 strikeouts in 173.2 innings pitched.

Both pitchers were extremely valuable for the Padres in 2024, yet they may be headed elsewhere in the near future.

Stat Shows How Dylan Cease Dominated With 1 Pitch In 2024

The San Diego Padres made the postseason for the first time since 2022 after finishing the season with a record of 93-69 and coming in second place in the National League West.

Although the Padres had a strong first series of the playoffs, they lost to the eventual World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Division Series.

After a strong showing in 2024, the Padres have not made any acquisitions thus far in the offseason, but they do have one dominant starting pitcher on their roster.

Dylan Cease is the ace of the Padres starting rotation, and stats show just how dominant he was in 2024 with one of his pitches.

According to MLB Network on ‘X,’ Cease led the league in most swings and misses on a single pitch type with 313 swings and misses on his slider.

— MLB Network (@MLBNetwork) January 19, 2025

Cease came into the league in 2019 with the Chicago White Sox where he played for five seasons before going to the Padres in 2024.

In 2024 with the Padres, Cease started 33 games and held a record of 14-11 with a 3.47 ERA and 224 strikeouts in 189.1 innings pitched.

Cease’s slider had 70 more swings and misses than the next closest player who was Chris Sale’s slider.

While Cease’s slider was proven to be his most dominant pitch in 2024, he also possesses an above-average fastball, which can make him even tougher to hit for opposing batters.

The Padres will need Cease to be dominant again in 2025 if they want to compete with the Dodgers for a division title, which they haven’t won since 2006.

Ken Rosenthal Provides Insight Into Padres’ Infighting

(Photo by Brandon Sloter/Getty Images) The San Diego Padres made the postseason after finishing second in the National League West. With the Los Angeles Dodgers residing in the same division, winning a title is difficult for the Padres. Not only did the Dodgers hold them off in the division, but they also knocked the Padres out of the postseason in the National League Division Series. The Padres have had a quiet offseason thus far, and it appears that the team is having some other problem ...

Analyst Reveals What Pitch The Padres Can Make To Roki Sasaki

MILWAUKEE, WI - MAY 13: A San Diego Padres hat sits in the dugout during the game against the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park on May 13, 2016 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The San Diego Padres made the postseason for the third time in the past five seasons after finishing with a record of 93-69 and coming in second in the National League West.

Though the Padres had their most wins in a season since 1998, they were not able to surpass the Los Angeles Dodgers for the division title.

Not only did the Padres finish behind the Dodgers, they also were bounced from the playoffs by them in the National League Division Series.

The Padres could be going to battle with the Dodgers yet again this offseason, this time for starting pitcher free agent Roki Sasaki, who is coming over from Japan.

MLB analyst Kyle Glaser revealed how the Padres could have an edge in their pursuit of Sasaki.

“The main pitch the Padres can make over a team like the Dodgers first and foremost would be quality of living,” Glaser said, via Foul Territory. “… San Diego is a nicer place to live than Los Angeles.”

Glaser said he believes the Padres should stress the quality of life benefit from living in San Diego, but also that Sasaki could elevate them to a place they haven’t been before.

The Dodgers just won their eighth championship, and although the Padres have been competitive in recent years, they have never won the World Series.

In 2024, Sasaki was 10-5 with a 2.35 ERA and 129 strikeouts in 111.0 innings pitched.

The Padres have yet to make a significant acquisition this offseason, and Sasaki could bring their rotation to another level if they land him instead of the Dodgers.

Analyst Says 1 Padres Player Is ‘Grossly Underrated’

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA - MARCH 28: Detail view of a San Diego Padres helmet in the dugout prior to an Opening Day game against the San Francisco Giants at PETCO Park on March 28, 2024 in San Diego, California.

The San Diego Padres made the postseason after finishing second in the National League West with a record of 93-69.

In an exciting series, the Padres were eliminated by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS.

After the Padres didn’t go as far in the postseason as they would have liked, many expected the team to be aggressive this offseason to make a run in 2025.

The Padres have not made any significant acquisitions thus far, but that may be because they are satisfied with their current roster.

One MLB analyst said he believes that roster has one of the most underappreciated players in baseball: Luis Arraez.

“For my money, he’s grossly underrated,” Kyle Glaser said, via Foul Territory.
.@KyleAGlaser says Luis Arraez is "grossly underrated" pic.twitter.com/FqlFBJLkVn

— Foul Territory (@FoulTerritoryTV) January 6, 2025

Glaser explains that making contact is one of the hardest things to do consistently, and Arraez is one of the best at it.

The game is centered around strikeouts and home runs, which causes players like Arraez to fall under the radar for his bat-to-ball skills.

To show just how good a hitter Arraez is, he is the first player to win three consecutive batting titles with three different teams in MLB history.

Arraez won the American League batting title with the Minnesota Twins in 2022, the National League batting title with the Miami Marlins in 2023, and the NL batting title again with the Padres in 2024.

Although the Padres would likely love to keep Arraez, Glaser said he believes he could be traded due to payroll issues.

MLB Team Is ‘Listening’ To Offers For All Their Stars

MLB’s offseason is always a good time because it lasts much longer than the NBA or NFL’s, where most big free agents sign within hours of free agency kicking off.

In contrast, baseball’s offseason is a marathon like its regular season.

It’s the time of the year when nothing is off limits, and many surprising players see their names come up in trade rumors.

One team is reportedly “listening” to offers for all their star players.

NY Post’s Jon Heyman appeared on “Bleacher Report Walk-Off” this week and noted that the San Diego Padres are listening to offers on just about all of their star players, noting, “They are listening on (Dylan) Cease, (Luis) Arraez, (Xander) Bogaerts…they are listening, are they likely to trade any of them? I’m not sure. There’s a lot of stuff going on here, and the values of these players are going up.”

The Padres are 'listening' on their star players, per @JonHeyman pic.twitter.com/S9d0XYjwn4

— B/R Walk-Off (@BRWalkoff) December 11, 2024

He noted that Bogaerts’ contract would make him tough to move, but teams would be all over the opportunity to trade for Cease or Arraez, who are both scheduled to hit free agency after the 2025 season.

Hearing that the Padres are considering being sellers has to be disappointing after another promising year that saw them give the eventual Los Angeles Dodgers a tough challenge in the NLDS.

Heyman also noted that the Padres are still in on Japanese free agent phenom Roki Sasaki, which would make a potential Cease trade easier to stomach.

Still, most fans would certainly prefer to see the team extend Cease and Arraez instead of shipping them out after each has been with the team for just one season.

Padres Manager Sends A Clear Message About Expectations Next Season

The San Diego Padres finished the 2024 season with a record of 93-69 and made the postseason for the first time since 2022.

Although the season ended after a heartbreaking loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in game five of the National League Division Series, the Padres showed they can contend with the world champions.

The Padres have plenty of options this offseason to add additional talent to their roster before the 2025 season with the stacked free agent class.

Padres manager Mike Shildt sent a clear message about his expectations for the team in 2025.

“We fully expect to be right there in the mix,” Shildt said via MLB Network Radio on Sirius XM.
"We fully expect to be right there in the mix and at the end of the day have Sasaki a Padre.

Mike Shildt expects the #Padres to make a big addition to his rotation this winter:#WinterMeetings |

The Padres have the unfortunate luck of residing in the same division as the Dodgers in the National League West.

Even though the Padres haven’t won the NL West since 2006, Shildt expects his team to make a run next season at not only a division title but also a World Series.

One free agent starting pitcher that Shildt says the Padres will contend for is Roki Sasaki from Japan.

Sasaki is a 23-year-old pitcher coming over to the MLB from Japan as a free agent this offseason.

The Padres have starting pitcher Yu Darvish on their roster from Japan, and Shildt believes this could be a factor in bringing in Sasaki in free agency.

Sasaki pitched in 18 games for his overseas team last year and held a record of 10-5 with a 2.35 ERA and 129 strikeouts in 111.0 innings pitched.

The Padres could benefit from dominant starting pitching in their attempt to quiet the stacked Dodgers offense next season.

Analyst Believes 1 MLB Fanbase Is Emerging As One Of The Best In Sports

The San Diego Padres were one of the most exciting teams in the 2024 Major League Baseball playoffs.

After finishing the regular season with a record of 93-69, the Padres knocked off the Atlanta Braves in the wild-card round before losing to the eventual World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Division Series.

The Padres took the Dodgers to game five before eventually losing, but their fan base went all out for the team’s home games.

MLB Analyst Robert Flores points out the Padres fans as becoming one of the best.

“I think that fanbase has emerged as one of the best in all of baseball. In all of sports,” Flores said.

The Padres ensured that their fans would be the only ones at their home games by restricting who could buy tickets in certain areas.

This move took the MLB news by storm and showed just how dedicated the team is to its fans, and the fans showed their appreciation by completely supporting their hometown team during the postseason run.

Although the Padres do not have a World Series title in franchise history, the team appears to be trending in the right direction with three postseason appearances in the last six seasons.

The Padres’ last World Series appearance was in 1998, but the team will get another shot in 2025 as they try to take down the Dodgers in the National League West.

Even though the Dodgers team seems dominant on paper, the Padres will try to dethrone them in 2025 and win their first NL West title since 2006.

Analyst Believes 1 Team Would Be A Great Fit For Roki Sasaki

The 2024 Major League Baseball season has officially concluded after the Los Angeles Dodgers won their eighth World Series title in franchise history.

Many Japanese-born players have come over to play in the MLB, and Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers is likely the most popular.

This offseason, another Japanese-born pitcher is expected to sign with a big-league team.

MLB Analyst Jensen Lewis revealed which team he thinks Roki Sasaki would make a great fit with.

“The San Diego Padres will be in there. Yu Darvish commands about as much respect as any Japanese-born player in the modern era,” Lewis said.

— MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM (@MLBNetworkRadio) November 10, 2024

Lewis appears to believe that there could be some influence to join the Padres due to Darvish also pitching for the organization and being from Japan.

Sasaki pitched overseas in 2024 where he started 18 games and had a record of 10 wins and five losses with a 2.35 ERA and 129 strikeouts in 111.0 innings pitched.

The talent that some of the Japanese-born players in the MLB have brought makes any new player coming to the MLB exciting.

After finishing the 2024 season with a record of 93 wins and 69 losses, the Padres made the postseason as a wild-card team and ended up losing in the National League Division Series to the Dodgers.

Although the Padres fell in the NLDS, they won their first series against the Atlanta Braves in the wild-card round.

It will be interesting to see if the Padres pursue Sasaki this offseason and add to their already talented starting rotation that includes Darvish.

Ha-Seong Kim Is Reportedly Generating ‘Lots Of Interest’ In Free Agency

MIAMI, FLORIDA - AUGUST 09: Ha-Seong Kim #7 of the San Diego Padres throws to first base for an out against the Miami Marlins during the ninth inning of the game at loanDepot park on August 09, 2024 in Miami, Florida.

The San Diego Padres finished the 2024 season with a record of 93-69, which was good enough for a second-place finish in the NL West.

After winning their first series in the postseason against the Atlanta Braves in the wild-card round, the Padres fell to the eventual World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS.

One utility infielder for the Padres is testing free agency following the 2024 season and appears to have several teams in pursuit.

“Ha-Seong Kim has been generating ‘lots of interest’ in the early days of free agency,” MLB Network wrote on X.

— MLB Network (@MLBNetwork) November 7, 2024

Although it appears that the Milwaukee Brewers are interested, the San Francisco Giants appear to be the team with the most interest in the 29-year-old infielder.

Kim’s regular season numbers with the Padres in 2024 included a .233 batting average with 11 home runs, 47 RBIs and a .700 OPS.

Kim has played for the Padres since coming into the league in 2021.

If he does sign with the Giants, that would mean he would stay in the NL West.

Kim would have plenty of games against his former squad to prove they made a mistake in not re-signing him.

The Brewers reside in the NL Central and could give Kim the best chance of making the postseason next season, as they have won the division three of the past four years.
