Padres rally, come up short in 4-3 loss to Mariners

For the second time in as many days, a three-run home run off the bat of Eugenio Suarez forced the San Diego Padres to come from behind in an effort to beat the Seattle Mariners. This time the deficit proved to be too much for the Padres to overcome and they dropped the final game of the series with the Mariners, 4-3 at T-Mobile Park, Wednesday.
Yu Darvish started on the mound for San Diego and pitched well through three innings despite allowing a run in the second inning on a Luke Raley RBI-double to put Seattle ahead, 1-0. However, Darvish ran into trouble in the bottom of the fourth inning, allowing a single to Julio Rodriguez, who then stole second. Darvish then allowed a walk to Josh Naylor to put runners at first and second for the Mariners.
Suarez, who hit a three-run homer off Jason Adam Tuesday night, delivered another three run home run to left field that put Seattle up 4-0. Darvish remained in the game and recorded outs against each of the next three batters, but the San Diego offense had not shown much life to that point and the deficit appeared insurmountable.
The Padres struggled to get anything going against Mariners starting pitcher Bryan Woo. He held the San Diego offense in check, allowing three hits through five innings, until the top of the sixth inning. San Diego scored a run on a Gavin Sheets two-out RBI-single and loaded the bases after a Jose Iglesias infield single.
Woo was taken out of the game and Gabe Speier came in to face Jake Cronenworth. He squared to bunt and pulled the bat back and was hit on the forearm to force in a run and cut the deficit to, 4-2. Freddy Fermin struck out to end the rally and the inning, but San Diego had forced its way back into the game.
The Padres did not have a baserunner after the sixth until the top of the ninth inning. Facing Mariners closer Andres Munoz, Cronenworth delivered a one-out double, just missing a home run, to keep the San Diego hopes alive.
Will Wagner pinch-hit for Fermin and lined out for the second out of the inning. Fernando Tatis Jr. delivered an RBI-double to make the score, 4-3. Ramon Laureano stepped in to the batter’s box with two outs and Tatis Jr. stole third on the first pitch of the at-bat. Laureano hit the next pitch right to Suarez at third base, who threw across the diamond to get Laureano at first by a step, ending the game.
San Diego is off Thursday and heads to Minnesota to take on the Twins, Friday at 5:10 p.m.
