Stephen Strasburg's season is over after the Washington Nationals decided to shut down the ace right-hander following a shaky start against the Miami Marlins.

Manager Davey Johnson made the announcement Saturday morning, citing the effect of the media attention surrounding the impending shutdown on the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 draft.

"I just told Stephen that his year is over. He's had a great year. I know what he's growing through," Johnson said. "The media hype on this thing has been unbelievable. I feel it's as hard for him as it would be anybody to get mentally, totally committed in the ballgame. And he's reached his innings limit. So we can get past this and talk about other things for a change."

Johnson said Strasburg was "emotional" about the decision to end his season immediately.

I think this is a mistake.

Thoughts?

Big mistake in my opinion. It's really gonna start to show come post-season.

Like I said in the last Strasburg post, I don't think this is a bad decision. Sure, he might not get injured if they let him play, but if he does, there's the risk of him needing surgery, and there's lots of examples of pitchers not being the same once they get back. (Francisco Liriano, anyone?)

I think this is the better decision in the long run. Strasburg has so much potential, to lose him just as he's starting his career would be crushing to the Nats. Would you rather be great this year, and then possibly lose a potential Cy Young award calibur pitcher, or keep him healthy and do well in seasons to come?

Who is to say they will do well in seasons to come?

The NL East is just one of those divisions where it can be hard to compete. This is one of the few years that the Phillies aren't contenders. They will be back as contenders soon though, so the Nationals should have taken advantage of the fact that this just isn't the year for teams like the Phillies that have prevented them from making the playoffs in previous years. The Braves have also been pretty good surprisingly, and even once Chipper Jones retires at the end of the season, they should still be good. The Braves don't seem to be as reliant on the production of Chipper Jones like they have been in past seasons, even though he's still playing pretty well. The Nationals could be good in the future as well, but you can say the same for the Phillies, Braves, and maybe even the Marlins. If I was the owner of the Nationals, I would take advantage of what my team has going right now. They're doing good. They should have went for the prize with Stephen Strasburg playing with them. There's always the chance that all-stars the Nationals have been reliant on this season won't meet future expectations and play poorly.
