Find out what's going on with your Dallas Mavericks.

A trade as big as the one the Dallas Mavericks made with the Los Angeles Lakers at this year’s NBA trade deadline doesn’t just come and go without long-lasting aftershocks, which are still being felt throughout the league and in Dallas in particular.
Fans have been protesting, general manager Nico Harrison has required beefed-up security for his own safety, season-ticket holders have been canceling, and now an assistant coach has jumped ship.
Marc Stein shared on X on Sunday that assistant coach Marko Milic has left the Mavericks’ coaching staff in the wake of the Doncic trade because, as Stein was told, he did not wish to stay with the Mavericks without Luka.
Marko Milić has left the Mavericks' coaching staff in the wake of the Luka Dončić trade, sources tell @TheSteinLine.
Milić was the first Slovenian to play in the NBA and, I'm told, did not wish to stay with the Luka-less Mavericks.

— Marc Stein (@TheSteinLine) February 9, 2025
Milic was the first Slovenian to play in the NBA, so it’s understandable that he would feel hurt by the Doncic trade, especially since Doncic proudly represents their home country of Slovenia.
Milic played two seasons with the Phoenix Suns from 1997 to 1999, where he was teammates with current Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd, who brought him onto the coaching staff in 2022.
Doncic has expressed his shock at the trade, and everyone who follows the NBA feels the same way, as it was unexpected for everyone involved.
Losing Milic is collateral damage, and the Mavericks’ front office has to continue picking up the pieces of the damage left behind by such a seismic move.
Anthony Davis getting injured in his debut game didn’t help matters, but fortunately, for the safety of this franchise, he seems to be okay.

Dallas Mavericks fans are still reeling from one of the biggest NBA trades in the past decade, perhaps longer.
Luka Doncic went to the Los Angeles Lakers in a surprising move, with Anthony Davis heading to the Mavericks in return.
Fans weren’t necessarily upset to see the team make a trade for a player like Davis, but losing Donicic, the face of the franchise, was a deafening blow.
Davis looked fantastic in his debut with the Mavericks, putting up 26 points, 16 rebounds, seven assists, and three blocks, but left early due to a non-contact groin injury.
While there was some optimism that this injury wasn’t too serious, Shams Charania recently reported that Davis will be out for several weeks, perhaps as long as a month.

This is quite literally adding injury to insult, further frustrating Mavericks fans about the team’s decision to make this trade.
Fans were certainly vocal on social media, letting their feelings known about this unfortunate situation.
Good thing the Mavericks traded injury risk Luka Doncic for a player like Anthony Davis who never gets injured or misses time.
Nico Harrison and Patrick Dumpnt clearly know what’s best.

Fans are reeling from this injury, and they’ve seemingly lost all hope in the front office.
This might have been a fluke in some respects, but considering Davis’ injury history, fans weren’t surprised to see the veteran fall in this manner.
It will be interesting to see how the Mavericks navigate the next few weeks without Davis, and if they’ll be able to stay focused and with their head above water.
The Mavericks currently hold the eighth-best record in the Western Conference, a position that’s now compromised with Davis on the sidelines.

The Dallas Mavericks are facing a significant setback just as Anthony Davis was beginning to make his mark with the team.
Reports suggest Davis could be sidelined for up to a month with a left adductor strain, an injury he sustained during his Dallas debut against the Houston Rockets.
The timing couldn’t be worse for Dallas, considering its previous struggles without Luka Doncic, having posted a disappointing 9-15 record when he was out this season before being traded.
ESPN analyst Brian Windhorst recently voiced serious concerns about the Mavericks’ competitive outlook going forward.
“It’s hard to look at them and say they’re going to be fine without Anthony Davis,” Windhorst said, via NBA on ESPN."It's hard to look at them and say they are going to be fine without Anthony Davis."@WindhorstESPN thinks the Mavs don’t have room for error without the All-Star big man. pic.twitter.com/KFAoLsj1qa

Davis’ stint with the Mavericks has already proven to be a roller-coaster ride.
After arriving in Dallas as part of the blockbuster trade, the big man was putting together an impressive performance before disaster struck.
His dominance was on full display as he posted 26 points, 16 rebounds, seven assists and three blocks in just 31 minutes.
However, the performance was cut short when he went down in the third quarter.
The injury situation in Dallas is becoming increasingly complicated.
While the team boasts one of the Western Conference’s deepest center rotations, its depth is being severely tested.
Derek Lively II’s extended absence due to a broken bone had already left the frontcourt thin, and Davis’ injury compounds the problem.
Though Daniel Gafford provides some relief, the spotlight now shifts to guard Kyrie Irving, who’s dealing with a disk issue in his back.
With Davis sidelined, Irving would become the offensive centerpiece, but the Mavericks can’t afford any more setbacks.

Kyrie Irving was given both bad and good news recently.
He was informed that his new teammate, Anthony Davis, is hurt and will be out for the foreseeable future.
But he was also told that he would replace Davis in the upcoming NBA All-Star Game, which is a huge honor.
Speaking to Joey Mistretta and the press, Klay Thompson talked about Irving being chosen to replace Davis.
“Kyrie is one of the best players of my generation. No question. The accolades, the resume is ridiculous. … You don’t become a nine-time All-Star by accident. That’s elite company. He inspires me and everyone else in this building, because he’s one of the most talented players I’ve ever seen,” Thompson said, per ClutchPoints.Mavs guard Klay Thompson on Kyrie Irving earning his 9th career All-Star selection:

— ClutchPoints (@ClutchPoints) February 11, 2025
As Thompson noted, Irving has been selected for the All-Star Game nine times now.
The last time he participated was in 2022-23, so it’s been a little while since he has been back.
Mavericks fans have seen what Irving can do, and he is still one of the smartest and most reliable floor generals in the league.
This season, Irving is averaging 24.2 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 4.9 assists.
The Mavericks are turning to him often, and they will be doing so even more now that Luka Doncic is gone.
And with the loss of Davis and the team’s other big men, Irving will have a lot on his shoulders.
But like Thompson said, he is one of the most professional stars in the league, so he is probably up to the task.
Irving will attempt to play even better and will inspire and ask more of his teammates, such as Thompson and others.
Whether it’s on an All-Star team or with his Mavericks, Irving elevates every squad he’s a part of.

The Dallas Mavericks’ blockbuster trade sending Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis stands as one of the NBA’s most controversial moves, and recent events have only intensified the debate.
The swap of Doncic’s durability for Davis’ injury-prone brilliance raised eyebrows across the league, and those concerns have already surfaced in dramatic fashion.
Davis’ debut with the Mavericks came to an abrupt end when he exited in the third quarter with an adductor strain.
The injury appears connected to an abdominal issue that sidelined him for four games prior to his Dallas debut.
ESPN insider Tim MacMahon recently shed light on the situation, suggesting Davis’ eagerness to prove himself may have contributed to the recent setback.
“As far as Anthony Davis, he was so determined to make such a strong first impression. He did that during that first half, was dominant, but, you know, he came back from that [abdominal] injury, perhaps a little bit early. All that stuff is connected,” MacMahon said, via NBA on ESPN."[Anthony Davis] was so determined to make such a strong first impression. … He came back from that ab injury, perhaps a little bit early."@espn_macmahon on the Mavericks in the aftermath of the Luka Doncic trade. pic.twitter.com/TzoUqtGgkn

The interconnected nature of Davis’ injuries has raised questions about potential surgery, though there’s optimism he can avoid that route.
The recovery timeline remains fluid, with estimates ranging from a few weeks to a month, leaving the Mavericks in a delicate position as they await updates on their new star.
The timing couldn’t be worse for a franchise already facing scrutiny over trading Doncic.
Fan frustration has reached new heights with Davis now possibly missing a month of action.
The Mavericks face a challenging task of managing both Davis’ recovery and mounting pressure from fans still processing Doncic’s departure.

Anthony Davis looked great during his first game with the Dallas Mavericks…until he didn’t.
Davis left the court with a groin injury after scoring an eye-popping 26 points, 16 rebounds, and seven assists during 31 minutes.
On Tuesday morning, Brian Windhorst stopped by “Get Up” to give an update on Davis and the Mavericks, and it wasn’t great.
He confirmed that Davis is set to miss multiple weeks with a left adductor strain.
This couldn’t come at a worse time because the Mavericks have already lost multiple big men with injuries, and they need them now more than ever.

Dereck Lively II has an injured ankle, Daniel Gafford hurt his knee on Monday evening, and Dwight Powell has a hip problem.
To make matters even worse, Maxi Kleber could have helped, but he was sent to the Los Angeles Lakers in the Luka Doncic trade.
Although some critics poke fun at him, Davis has actually been really healthy over the last few seasons.
He played a career-high 76 games last season and has only missed a few games here and there.
However, it looks like his entry to the Mavericks will be complicated because of this.
This will only make Dallas fans more upset.
They were already extremely upset at the loss of Doncic, but now they will grow furious that they can’t have Davis for an extended period of time too.
Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd will have to figure out something because the hole in the frontcourt is now massive.
Davis’ injury marks just another headache for the Mavs and their fans.

The Dallas Mavericks just lost their franchise player.
Luka Doncic made his debut with the Los Angeles Lakers, starting a new era in Purple & Gold basketball.
Notably, they did so while another Mavericks great was in attendance.
As Jovan Buha on X (via NBA Central) showed, Dirk Nowitzki went to Crypto.com Arena to watch his former teammate’s debut with his new team.

— NBACentral (@TheDunkCentral) February 11, 2025
This speaks volumes about several things.
On the one hand, it shows just how close Nowitzki grew to be with the Slovenian star, and it was a nice gesture to watch him showing up in person to be present at such a big event.
On the other hand, Nowitzki has clearly taken a side in this situation.
GM Nico Harrison’s decision to trade Doncic was reportedly motivated by concerns about his work ethic and conditioning.
By going to Los Angeles and attending another franchise’s game, Nowitzki’s actions are speaking volumes.
He clearly disagreed with the Mavs’ decision to let go of their 25-year-old star, which shocked the NBA world to its core.
The trade was so bad on paper that even Mavs fans are complaining about getting a future first-ballot Hall of Famer like Anthony Davis.
Luka is so good and has such a bright future ahead of him that he’s making a trade for a player of Davis’ caliber look like a steal.
Nico Harrison will have a tough time changing the narrative, and once you infuriate a guy like Nowitzki, you know you messed up.

Kyrie Irving of the Dallas Mavericks was looking and feeling great on Wednesday night.
While playing against the Golden State Warriors, Irving posted 42 points and seven rebounds.
As noted by Hoop Central, he went 15-of-25 from the field, 7-of-10 from the three-point line, and was 5-of-5 with his free throws.
Irving fans came out in full force to support their favorite star, saying that this game was a stark reminder of what a special player he is.

A lot of people said that Irving is an all-time great and isn’t appreciated in the ways he should be.
The number of people who feel he is one of the top point guards of all time is only growing, and he is viewed as a top-five PG by many.
Irving is 32 years old and likely has several years left in the tank, but some people are already fearful of the day he hangs up his jersey and retires, especially when he is still playing like this.

Is Irving being taken for granted?
A lot of people feel that he is one of the most consistent players in the league and isn’t respected like he should be.

Now that the Mavericks are without Luka Doncic, Irving will get more opportunities to lead and shine.
With more of the offensive responsibilities put on his shoulders, Irving fans are hoping they see him perform like this more often.
For the season, Irving is averaging 24.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.8 assists, but it wouldn’t be a bit surprising to see those numbers rise as the season goes on.

The last several weeks have been very difficult for the Dallas Mavericks, and the hits just keep on coming.
After losing Luka Doncic in the biggest trade of this generation, multiple injuries have struck the team.
On Thursday, Shams Charania reported that Daniel Gafford has sustained a Grade 3 MCL sprain and will miss at least six weeks of play.
That means the Mavericks will be without Gafford, Anthony Davis, and Dereck Lively II for “significant stretches of the second half of the season.”

— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) February 14, 2025
This injury to the 6-foot-10 Gafford could not come at a worse time.
The center is averaging 12.3 points and 6.9 rebounds per game, shooting 69.9 percent from the field and playing a pivotal role in the team’s frontcourt.
Losing Gafford would be tough at any time, but it’s even harder right now because Davis and Lively are also gone.
And none of these stars are set to return any time soon, which means the Mavericks will need a long-term plan to work on defense.
The Mavericks went all the way to the NBA Finals last season and there was hope they could do it again in 2024-25.
But the Doncic trade and these injuries put their future in serious doubt.
Dallas is currently the eighth team in the West with a 30-26 record.
They now get some time off because of the All-Star break, but then it’ll be back to work and the Mavericks will be pushing forward without their centers.
What will their record be a week or two after the break and which talented big man will be the first to return?

Dallas Mavericks fans are still reeling from the recent surprise loss of Luka Doncic.
Just weeks ago, people thought he would be a Maverick for life, and now he is playing for a totally different team and the franchise feels completely transformed.
Speaking to the press, Mavericks star Kyrie Irving spoke about the fans’ reaction to the Doncic trade and said their anger and grief are all a natural part of the NBA process.
“I think it’s graduated from just like hate to anger, the cycle of emotions. The hate, the anger, the grieving, and then the passion…I think it’s just part of the process of what we’re all dealing with, as not only players, but fans in Dallas,” Irving said, via Noah Weber.Kyrie Irving on the reactions from fans since the Luka Doncic trade:

Irving spoke about his own experiences growing up and said he can relate to how outraged and hurt the fans were when Doncic was sent away.
To say that no one saw this coming is a complete understatement.
The Doncic trade wasn’t on anyone’s radar and was held completely in the dark between just Dallas general manager Nico Harrison and Lakers GM Rob Pelinka.
But would fans have reacted differently if they had heard rumors before the trade was official?
This was such a massive move that they probably would have been upset no matter what, and Irving said that is to be expected.
The fans are devoted to the Mavericks and have been rooting them on for decades now.
Doncic was one of the most popular Dallas stars of all time and his career is still young.
The fact that he brought the team to the NBA Finals last year made this trade even more painful.
Irving totally understands why people are upset but thinks the process will naturally resolve itself.
People are very hurt right now, but they will adjust to this new normal and learn to support their team again soon.

The Dallas Mavericks’ decision to trade Luka Doncic could have a massive ripple effect.
It was one of the most shocking transactions in professional sports history, and it will be talked about and debated for years to come.
Notably, even NBA Commissioner Adam Silver was shocked to hear the news.
Talking to the media at the All-Star weekend, the Commissioner admitted that he didn’t see that trade coming.
“I was surprised when I heard the trade. I did not know that Luka Doncic was potentially a player that was about to be traded…that was news to me,” he said.Adam Silver on the Luka — AD trade:

Reports state that not even LeBron James, Anthony Davis, or Doncic knew this was going to go down.
Mavericks GM Nico Harrison and Lakers GM Rob Pelinka reportedly carried these conversations privately for weeks before they materialized.
There have been several disturbing reports about the Mavericks’ eagerness to move Doncic.
Even so, it feels like they could’ve gotten much more from him if they had made him available to other teams.
It’s not that Anthony Davis isn’t a star and a future Hall of Famer, but getting just one first-round pick in return for a 25-year-old superstar and the face of the franchise is just odd.
That is even more rare if you consider the fact that Doncic led the team to the NBA Finals less than a year ago.
The Lakers now have someone to build around for the next decade, and the Mavs lost Anthony Davis for weeks with an injury he sustained during his debut with the team.
Only time will tell who was right, but even if the Mavs somehow end up winning this trade, it was still a shocker.

The NBA’s continuous efforts to revitalize its All-Star Weekend have sparked intriguing discussions among players and fans alike.
After the league introduced yet another format change in the 2025 All-Star Game, a compelling alternative has emerged: a 1-on-1 tournament that’s gaining traction among the league’s elite players, with Dallas Mavericks star Kyrie Irving leading the charge.
The prospect of watching the NBA’s premier scorers battle it out in individual matchups has captured the imagination of basketball enthusiasts.
Irving, known for his exceptional ball-handling skills and scoring prowess, recently shared his thoughts on the concept during an interview with Rachel Nichols.
“I’m open to it,” Irving said, via ClutchPoints. “Yeah, when there’s smoke, there’s fire. I’m that fire with 1-on-1.”Rachel Nichols: "What do you think of doing [1-on-1 tournament] at the All-Star Game?"

— ClutchPoints (@ClutchPoints) February 17, 2025
When Nichols suggested that some NBA players might shy away from participating to avoid potential embarrassment, Irving dismissed the concern.
Instead, he emphasized the need to view and appreciate the format through a different lens.
“I just think that there has to be an appreciation there first of what you do, because you got to commentate it a little differently than you do 5-on-5,” Irving said. “There’s an appreciation for seeing a one-v-one matchup that I think goes beyond just what the traditional space is now. So, maybe if we create that, I’m with that.”
The success of such competitions is evident in women’s basketball, where the Unrivaled 1-on-1 Tournament made history.
Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier claimed victory and a landmark $200,000 prize, the largest single-day payout in women’s basketball history.
Her achievement not only shows the format’s potential but also demonstrates how individual showdowns can elevate the sport and create unprecedented opportunities for the players.

The Dallas Mavericks stunned the sports world a few weeks ago when they traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis and Max Christie in what was perhaps the most surprising trade in NBA history.
The pitchforks are fully out, and many fans are furious at the Mavs’ front office and ownership, which includes Jalen Rose, who recently called out ownership for the trade.
“I love Anthony Davis, but he was the second-best player on a championship team…To me, it seems like they didn’t want to pay Luka, so for me, if you don’t want to pay Luka, then just sell the team. That’s how I feel about it,” Rose said while speaking on the TNT panel prior to the All-Star Game on Sunday."It seems like [the Mavs] didn't wanna pay Luka, so for me if you don't wanna pay Luka, then just sell the team. That's how I feel about it."

Vince Carter responded to what Rose said by alluding to the theory that the Mavericks’ new owners are angling to move the team to Las Vegas since they are heavily involved in the casino industry, which would normally sound crazy, but nothing seems crazy when you are willing to make a trade like this.
Rose also mentioned how it’s common practice for players involved in trade rumors to start hearing negative things leak about them publicly but pointed out how ridiculous it was that this happened to Luka both before and certainly after the trade, as the Mavericks have been publicly burying him after the trade.
There are so many variables to this trade and we’ll probably never fully understand what happened, and it still doesn’t feel real to see Luka in a Lakers uniform.

It has been a couple of weeks, but the fact that the Los Angeles Lakers traded Anthony Davis to the Dallas Mavericks for Luka Doncic is still unfathomable.
We’re all trying to make sense of it, though we probably never will.
No one has ever seen a trade like this, and it’s hard to imagine what went through these players’ minds when they found out they had been traded.
Former NFL legend DeSean Jackson has a little insight into how AD felt after hearing the news.
In a recent appearance on The Big Podcast with Shaquille O’Neal, Jackson said he talked to Anthony Davis about the trade while he was at the Mavericks’ game against the Philadelphia 76ers the other day.
“You could just tell in his face, He was like, yeah, ‘they got me up outta there,” Jackson said.DeSean Jackson talked to Anthony Davis after the Luka trade:

Davis got off to a dominant start in the first half of a game with the Mavericks before leaving with an adductor injury that will now reportedly keep him out of action for about a month.
The Mavericks have been dogging Luka on the way out in an effort to try to get the fans back on their side and help them understand why they made the trade, but it’s not helping at all.
Questioning Luka’s conditioning and nutrition habits after he led his team to the NBA Finals at age 25 is a bad look, but hopefully, for Mavericks fans, this works out, and they can all look back and laugh about it in a few years.

For years, NBA fans have speculated about star players’ decisions not to partake in the Slam Dunk contest anymore.
Some argue that they don’t want to get hurt, but literally, no one has ever gotten injured during the Slam Dunk contest in the past.
Others argue that the players don’t want their egos to suffer or get exposed if they lose.
Perhaps that’s why the league might want to re-ignite their long-lost competitive fire with a bit of a tweak.
Rumors have it that the NBA is considering putting together a 1-on-1 tournament in next year’s All-Star weekend.
When asked about that, Dallas Mavericks star point guard Kyrie Irving wasn’t only on board; he was looking forward to it.
He claimed that he wouldn’t ‘duck any smoke’ and that he would go against anybody (via Yahoo Sports).

Irving has some of the greatest handles in basketball history.
Needless to say, he wouldn’t have much of a physical edge over centers or power forwards, and he might struggle to get stops against them.
Nevertheless, the other player would have to take the ball away from him first, and that’s going to be the tricky part.
The league will reportedly offer a $1 million prize for the winner.
Then again, bragging rights might be more than enough to make the players actually care and look to compete again for the first time in years.

The Dallas Mavericks made one of the most controversial and talked-about moves in recent professional sports history.
Moving on from 25-year-old Luka Doncic was something no one saw coming.
It was so shocking and hard to explain that Mavs fans didn’t even seem to care about the return they got.
Not even getting a future first-ballot Hall of Famer like Anthony Davis seemed to be enough to appease their wrath.
That’s why even Mavs CEO Rick Welts admitted that he may have underestimated the backlash and reaction the team got for this decision (via Legion Hoops).

Whenever you see your fans angry that you got Anthony Davis and a first-round pick, you may have to question whether you made the right decision.
Not only did they trade their young star just months after he led the team to the NBA Finals, but the team also didn’t even auction him or try to get the best trade package for him.
As good a player as Davis is, chances are the team could’ve gotten much more in the open market if they had gone public about their decision to move the Slovenian superstar.
More than that, all the leaks and reports make it seem as if the Mavs grew tired of Doncic, and while they might have their reasons to feel that way, it still feels like a disservice to the franchise.
Only time will tell who actually won this trade, but today, it might be hard to feel good if you’re a Mavs fan.
