May seem like alot of money (3.975M per year) but I am pretty sure Staal is just going to get better and better in the next 5 years. He's only 23 and is already a pretty good dman. And most dmen take a bit longer to develop and get NHL ready. So he's atleast 2 or 3 years ahead of schedual.
