Victor Hedman, Ryan McDonagh and the Norris Trophy

Cale Makar won the Norris Trophy. That’s not much of a surprise as the young Colorado Avalanche defenseman scored 30 goals and put up 92 points. That is as impressive of a season for a blueliner that we’ve seen in a long time. It’s also further proof that the Norris Trophy might officially be awarded to the “defense player who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-around ability in…

Several Tampa Bay Lightning players named to Olympic rosters

As the sun blazes down in the midst of another hot summer, it’s hard to wrap a sunburned head around the fact that the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy are roughly eight months away. That means the national teams have to start figuring out who is going to play hockey for them. With the NHL returning to the Olympics for the first time since 2014, that means several Tampa Bay Lightning players will be…

The 2024-25 NHL season ends with the Florida Panthers crowned as Stanley Cup Champions, again

Whelp. The Stanley Cup is staying in Florida. That’s nice. The Florida Panthers went from huge question mark heading into the post-season to an absolute juggernaut as they won their second consecutive Stanley Cup with a 5-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final. And with that victory, the season comes to an end. With several of their players injured at the end of…

Gabriel Dumont retires from hockey

Over the last decade, two players were a constant presence in the Syracuse Crunch line-up. Daniel Walcott, who joined the team in the 2015-16 season, and Gabriel Dumont, who has been with the Crunch on three different stints since 2016. On Thursday, Dumont, the team captain, announced his retirement from hockey. He hangs up the blue and white (and occasional orange) having skated in 290…

Lightning were reportedly in talks with veteran free agent

A couple of days ago, veteran center Jonathan Toews reportedly agreed to a bonus-laden contract with the Winnipeg Jets. After a two-year absence from the sport, Toews is returning to the NHL with the defending President’s Trophy winners. The 37-year-old had drawn interest from several teams in the league and, according to insider Elliotte Friedman, the Tampa Bay Lightning were one of them. So…

Digging into a potential JJ Peterka acquisition for the Lightning

In our last post about the upcoming free agency frenzy, we mentioned the probability of Tampa Bay Lightning general manager Julien BriseBois looking to add some low-cost, veteran centers to help balance out the bottom-six forward corps. In other words, some less-than-sexy moves that don’t move the needle much, but could help out with the depth. Of course, a lot of folks thought that would be his…

The Lightning hit the 2025 NHL Draft with seven picks

For all of the reporters on the NHL beat, visions of summer cottages on the lake are starting to come into focus. The press box meals, slow elevators, and locker room chats are well behind them, and it’s almost time to shift things down into vacation mode. Before everyone gets there, a busy week of action kicks off tomorrow as the first round of the 2025 NHL Draft gets underway. Rounds 2-7 consume…

Tampa Bay Lightning sign two players to two-way contracts

Let’s finish up day one of free agency with a couple of earlier signings for the Tampa Bay Lightning. Julien BriseBois continued to add to the organizational depth by signing forward Nicholas Abruzzese (one year) and defenseman Simon Lundmark (two years) to two-way deals. Syracuse Crunch fans are probably familiar with Abruzzese, who has been skating with the Toronto Marlies for the past…

[Update 11:20 AM] – The Lightning have announced the deal. Just because the rest of the world is sleeping doesn’t mean Julien BriseBois isn’t working. It appears the Tampa Bay Lightning general manager kept the free agent frenzy going well into the dark hours of the night as a report emerged at roughly 1:00 am that the Bolts had signed forward Jakob Pelletier to a three-year contract.
