New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin told NFL Network on Thursday that he's hopeful receiver Hakeem Nicks will recover from a broken bone in his right foot by the start of the 2012 season, while acknowledging that it might "be close."

Nicks broke the fifth metatarsal in his right foot while running a route during a Thursday morning practice session, the team announced.

According to a news release issued by the team, Nicks will undergo surgery on Friday in Charlotte, N.C., where Dr. Robert Anderson will insert a screw into the broken bone.

Nicks faces an expected recovery time of 12 weeks, meaning that he will likely miss most, if not all, of the team's 2012 training camp, which is scheduled to begin at the University of Albany on July 26

The Giants had one of the best groups of wide receivers, but Mario Manningham now plays for the 49ers and Hakeem Nicks broke his foot bone. It seems like the only dependable receiver is Victor Cruz now.

They said he should recover in about 12 weeks, and be back during the preseason, so he will back playing when the season starts.

Hopefully, he will recover in time for the season; otherwise, their season could be in jeopardy.

They're not always right about things though. There are setbacks sometimes. Also, he will at least miss training camp, and like we saw last season, that can be disastrous just the same. It's a long season.

Even if he's not back for the Opener, he will be back sometime during the season, and will still have an impact with the Giants.
