The NBA trade deadline has officially passed, and Kevin Durant remains on the Phoenix Suns.
Many people believed that Durant was going to move on from the Suns, with rumors circulating about a potential return to the Golden State Warriors.
When it became clear that the Warriors weren’t going to be an option, several other teams were mentioned as possible destinations, but nothing came to fruition.
Some of those teams were public knowledge, but one team was flying under the radar, at least, until Bob Myers spilled the beans in a segment of NBA Today.
“Memphis knows what he said, because that’s what they tried on Jimmy Butler, that’s what they tried on Kevin Durant,” Myers said.Lol Bob Myers accidentally leaked that the Grizzlies were trying to get Kevin Durant on live TV pic.twitter.com/53SbMucKMs
— Oh No He Didn't (@ohnohedidnt24) February 6, 2025
His co-hosts were shocked to hear about the Memphis Grizzlies as a potential destination, as they hadn’t been mentioned as a legitimate option before Myers said anything.
It’s unclear if this was an intentional slip-up or not, but Myers might have broken some trust with his sources by revealing this.
Either way, the Grizzlies weren’t able to get a deal done with Durant, and they’ll have to navigate the rest of the season with their current roster.
As it stands, they have the second-best record in the Western Conference, so they’ve played well to this point.
Durant would have added another layer of production and a strong veteran presence with playoff experience, but the Grizzlies can’t dwell on that.
It will be interesting to see if there’s additional fallback from Durant and the Suns given that he wasn’t traded, and if he’ll stay motivated through the end of the season.

The Memphis Grizzlies are mostly healthy again and have been succeeding this season.
They are currently the third-best team in the West and hold a 32-16 record.
There haven’t been many rumors about them making trades before next week’s deadline, but they could shake things up.
According to Tim Bontemps, fans should pay close attention to Marcus Smart, who might be departing from the team next week.
“One Memphis player to watch over the next week is guard Marcus Smart. League sources told me there has been plenty of discussion about the former Defensive Player of the Year in recent weeks,” Bontemps wrote, per NBACentral.Marcus Smart is a name to watch on the trade market, per @TimBontemps

Smart is currently in his second season with the Grizzlies and is averaging 9.2 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game this season.
Due to injuries and a crowded roster, Smart doesn’t have as big a role on the team as he once did.
When he came to the Grizzlies, many people thought he’d boost the team with his mix of skills and experience.
They thought he could serve a mentor role for Ja Morant and could help the team thrive in the postseason because of his past with the Boston Celtics.
Instead, it feels like the team doesn’t have a lot of space for Smart and they might be wise to move his contract.
Even with injuries, Smart could still be a valuable player for a team.
He is a fierce competitor and was named Defensive Player of the Year back in 2022, a major accomplishment for a guard.
The Grizzlies don’t need to make many changes, but they could definitely enhance their lineup if they pursue an intelligent trade involving Smart.

The Phoenix Suns have been tied to Jimmy Butler since the Miami Heat star made it clear that he wants to be traded.
The Suns have been pulling some behind-the-scenes moves to trade for Butler, but, so far, no deal has been made.
Meanwhile, a couple of dark horse teams are in the mix for Butler.
According to Evan Sidery, the Memphis Grizzlies and Milwaukee Bucks “loom as potentially serious dark horse trade suitors” for Butler.
“Both teams can construct a deal that can beat out the Suns from being able to secure him. If Memphis or Milwaukee acquired Butler, he could become a true rental to chase a title,” Sidery wrote. The Grizzlies and Bucks loom as potentially serious dark horse trade suitors for Jimmy Butler.

Butler has reportedly said he doesn’t want to play for the Grizzlies, although he ultimately has no say in where he goes.
Now that he has burned all his bridges in Miami, he should consider himself lucky if the front office doesn’t send him to his least desired destination.
The Grizzlies and Bucks would view Butler as a “rental,” someone who could help them claim a championship this year before possibly moving on shortly after.
As for the Heat, they have allegedly changed their stance and are willing to take smaller packages in exchange for Butler.
They have grown tired of the fighting, and they have suspended him indefinitely until they get a deal done.
The Grizzlies and Bucks are surely cobbling together their offers and will come to the Heat soon.
With the trade deadline a little more than a week away, the clock is ticking and they do not have a lot of time.
Butler’s next chapter will be revealed soon.

A number of teams have been tied to the Miami Heat since Jimmy Butler formally requested a trade several weeks ago.
And although Butler wants to move to the Phoenix Suns, he may not end up there.
Brian Windhorst is reporting that the Memphis Grizzlies are “lurking” in trade talks for Butler.
“The Grizzlies are lurking in Butler trade talks, sources said, and have been in contact with the Heat during the process. Rival league executives believe Memphis is trying to combine a talent influx with offloading some future salary so it can facilitate a contract extension for Jaren Jackson Jr. as early as this summer. Butler, meanwhile, has made it known that he could opt out of his contract this summer and seek free agency. Sources have theorized that if the Grizzlies can acquire him for a playoff run and also free cap space this summer, that’s where their interests might lie,” Windhorst said, via NBACentral. The Memphis Grizzlies are reportedly lurking in the Jimmy Butler sweepstakes and wouldn’t mind acquiring him for a playoff run, per @WindhorstESPN

The Grizzlies are finally healthy and strong again and have become the third-best team in the Western Conference, right behind the second-seed Houston Rockets.
They see Butler as a player who could help them perform well in the playoffs and could possibly lead them all the way to the NBA Finals.
They also think creating a deal for Butler would give them enough capital and leeway to grant Jaren Jackson Jr. a contract extension this summer.
This deal would obviously be a positive and forward-thinking move for the Grizzlies.
With that being said, inside reports have stated that Butler doesn’t want to play for the Grizzlies.
That’s surprising because he reportedly wants to join a squad that can win now, and the Grizzlies definitely can.
For whatever reason, he doesn’t wish to be in Memphis but that might be his fate if the Grizzlies put together a package that makes the Miami Heat and Pat Riley happy.

Ja Morant of the Memphis Grizzlies may have had the best dunk of the NBA season, but, sadly, it didn’t count.
A few nights ago, Morant caught air over Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs with a massive dunk that people will be talking about for a long time.
Morant opened up about his thoughts on the dunk and doing such an incredible thing against a tall, powerful, seemingly unstoppable player like Wembanyama.
“It was just another person at the rim,” Morant said according to Michael Wallace, per Legion Hoops.

During his game against the Spurs, Morant was driving his way to the bucket in the fourth quarter and committed this monster dunk.
But he had drawn a foul just seconds before, meaning the dunk came after the whistle.
Still, people were blown away by seeing Morant get air over Wembanyama, who is constantly talked about as Defensive Player of the Year.
It was a shocking moment, made even more shocking by the fact that Morant recently said he wasn’t going to be dunking anymore.
In order to keep his body in pristine shape and avoid injuries, Morant said he wouldn’t be performing such epic feats of air.
But when an opportunity like this one presents itself, Morant just can’t help himself.
Morant and his Grizzlies are having a strong season, with Morant averaging 21.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 7.5 assists, and the Grizzlies sitting as the third team in the West with a 27-15 record.
It doesn’t matter if this dunk didn’t count because people loved every second of it and it was further proof that Morant really isn’t afraid of anyone in the league.

Jimmy Butler recently said that he wants to once again feel joy when playing basketball and doesn’t think that’s possible with the Miami Heat.
He apparently also doesn’t think that’s possible with the Memphis Grizzlies.
On Tuesday, Chris Haynes reported, per NBACentral, that Butler is not interested in playing for the Grizzlies.
This is somewhat surprising because Memphis sounds like the sort of team Butler wanted to head to.

— NBACentral (@TheDunkCentral) January 7, 2025
Reports have said that Butler wishes to play for a squad that can be in contention now and win a lot of games.
Most Memphis fans would agree that the Grizzlies can do that.
They are currently the third-best team in the West with a 24-13 record.
The Houston Rockets and Oklahoma City Thunder are ahead of them, but it doesn’t get a lot better than Memphis.
Plus, many analysts have already said that Butler could take the Grizzlies to the next level, especially if he was able to find good chemistry with Ja Morant.
A Memphis team with Butler could do many great things, so it’s not entirely clear why Butler doesn’t want to play there.
Other reports have said he has his heart set on moving to the Phoenix Suns, so perhaps he isn’t interested in any other team unless it’s Phoenix.
It’s important to remember that Butler doesn’t have much control in this situation.
He can state where he does and does not want to play, but the Heat have all the power and they will send him to the team that offers them the best deal.

The Miami Heat are eager to get rid of Jimmy Butler, but they only want to agree to a trade that is right for them.
There are several teams trying to get Butler, but which one has the best shot?
According to DraftKings Sportsbook, via Evan Sidery, the Memphis Grizzlies have surged forward to be the favorites in a trade for Butler.
Over the weekend, they had +3000 odds, but now their chances sit at +180.
They are followed by the Phoenix Suns with +300, while the Heat are still in the mix with +400.
According to @DKSportsbook’s latest odds update, the Grizzlies are even heavier favorites to acquire Jimmy Butler:
Grizzlies = +180
Suns = +300
Heat = +400
Since the weekend, Memphis’ odds have moved all the way from +3000 to now close to even money in the Butler derby. pic.twitter.com/kY002kIt2b

When this episode with Butler began, there were a few teams tied to him.
The Golden State Warriors were reportedly looking at Butler, and the Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks were also mentioned as potential homes for him.
Those teams faded away when it became clear they didn’t want to move the assets needed to trade for Butler.
The Suns are still involved, but making that happen could be very difficult for Phoenix.
The Grizzlies seem like a very clear choice for Butler.
They have the assets necessary, and they would also give Butler a team that has win-now potential, which is something he wants.
In the end, the team that gets Butler will be the one that offers the best package to the Heat.
Miami isn’t interested in making Butler happy or giving him what he wants.
Instead, they are solely focused on laying the groundwork for a bright post-Butler future.
The Grizzlies’ chances have grown, but will they take the steps to trade for Butler and give Miami what they want?

The “Whoop That Trick” chant/song has gradually become a staple of Memphis sports, with the Grizzlies typically playing the song in the closing seconds of home victories and the crowd reacting like maniacs and happily taking part in the chant.
During the Grizzlies’ 144-93 dismantling of the Golden State Warriors on Thursday night, fans were treated to their favorite song a bit earlier than they had grown accustomed to.
The team’s arena DJ put on “Whoop That Trick” about halfway through the fourth quarter in the blowout win over the Warriors in a classic case of trolling.
Well, well, well would you look at that.

— Damichael Cole (@DamichaelC) December 20, 2024
With the team up around 50 points throughout the fourth quarter, there was no chance of a jinx happening, so the DJ decided to pull the trigger early before many fans left the arena.
The 51-point win represents the team’s largest victory ever over the Warriors and hopefully kicked off a new winning streak after the Los Angeles Lakers ended their 4-game streak on Sunday.
The Warriors have now surrendered 143 and 144 points in consecutive games and have lost nine of their last 11 games to fall to 14-12 after an exciting 12-3 start to the season.
The Warriors beat Memphis on November 15th, so this blowout evened the season series and the two teams will meet again in a couple of weeks where the Warriors will look to avenge this embarrassing performance.
The Grizzlies are sitting comfortably with the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference and are looking revitalized so far now that the team is healthy and ready to put last year behind them.
Fans should expect to hear “Whoop That Trick” quite a few more times this year as long as the good health remains.

After a nightmare of the 2023–24 season, the Memphis Grizzlies are back in a big way.
They are currently the second seed in the Western Conference, but they aren’t content with being second-best.
Because of that, they might make a trade before the approaching NBA deadline, but what would it look like?
Writing on X, Evan Sidery said if the Grizzlies choose to make an “aggressive move” on the trade market, Marcus Smart will “likely” be involved.
Sidery wrote:
“Smart’s $20.2 million salary allows Memphis to get in the conversation for any of the top available players.
Memphis has already been an active team in the marketplace.”If the Grizzlies decide to make an aggressive move on the trade market, Marcus Smart will likely be involved.

— Evan Sidery (@esidery) December 19, 2024
Smart’s output with the Grizzlies has dropped this year, and he is currently averaging 9.2 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 3.9 assists.
This is his second season with Memphis after years of playing for the Boston Celtics, where he was named Defensive Player of the Year in the 2021-22 season.
Despite being six-foot-three, Smart remains a tenacious defender and brings a lot of help off the bench.
But if the Grizzlies are willing to make trades, they do not have many options.
They are eager to hold onto the core of their team and especially their leading stars.
This allows them little wiggle room on the trade market, and Smart is one of the few assets they can move.
So, now the question is if Memphis will be aggressive or not.
With their 18-9 record, they are behind only the Oklahoma City Thunder in the West.
Will a trade involving Smart help them overtake OKC, or could it mess with the good chemistry they have?

The Memphis Grizzlies easily sailed past the Brooklyn Nets on Friday night, but things got very heated during a courtside confrontation.
A video shared by Erik Slater and others on X shows Ja Morant having a vocal spat with Nets head coach Jordi Fernandez.
Dennis Schroder and Memphis head coach Taylor Jenkins also got involved in the altercation before refs blew whistles and separated both sides.
Things didn’t go beyond words, but it certainly looked like things were escalating during this late-game showdown.

Morant had something to say to Fernandez (again) and Schroder took expectation. Jenkins then chimed in.

As he sauntered back to the bench with his team up by 20 points, Morant was saying something to Fernandez and it didn’t sit well with the Nets head coach.
It’s not obvious what he said or why it bothered Fernandez, but he responded to Morant and then Jenkins stood between them.
That should have been the end of it, but things continued when Schroder seemingly said something to Jenkins, who then got heated and spoke back.
Finally, game officials walked up and put an end to the confrontation.
After the game, Fernandez briefly talked about the moment, saying he would never speak to players on other teams and wished Jenkins held his stars to the same standard.
He called it disrespectful and not part of the game.
It looks like there is some bad blood brewing between these two teams as the Nets fight to figure out their future and the Grizzlies continue to rise in the West.
The Nets hold a 10-15 record and are the subject of much trade speculation, but the Grizzlies are now second in the West and have won four games in a row.

The Memphis Grizzlies are currently the second-best team in the Western Conference and hold a strong 36-18 record.
They are positioned to make a powerful run in the playoffs, but what happens if they don’t?
According to Howard Beck, the Grizzlies could make a massive change and part ways with Ja Morant if they don’t have a successful postseason.
“I’m constantly checking in with executives around trade deadline about like, okay, what we saw, what we didn’t see, what’s next, and in this league, you are always on the lookout for who’s the next wave of stars that are going to get dealt, right?… Somebody out of the blue said, keep an eye on Ja [Morant] this summer… I’m just saying it’s one of those things I’m just kind of keeping an eye on if they were to flame out early,” Beck said, per Legion Hoops.REPORT: NBA executive believes the Grizzlies could potentially look to move Ja Morant this summer, per @HowardBeck

— Legion Hoops (@LegionHoops) February 18, 2025
Beck made it clear that this might only happen if the Grizzlies “flame out early.”
If Memphis reaches the playoffs and then falls apart right away, there will certainly be calls for the team to make some substantial trades.
But will losing Morant be the right move?
He is averaging 20.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 7.4 assists per game this season, shooting 44.7 percent from the field.
Injuries have been a problem for Morant lately, and the team has had to figure out an identity without him.
Would that be a reason why they’d part ways with him after five years?
The Grizzlies might respond to this report, and they will most likely say they have no desire to lose Morant.
But Beck’s statement will get people talking, and you can bet NBA fans will be paying close attention to everything the Grizzlies do in the postseason if things don’t go their way.

The NBA landscape shifted dramatically when the Dallas Mavericks shocked everyone by trading Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers.
The move, involving a 25-year-old superstar with no prior warning, sent ripples through the league.
Now, every franchise player might be wondering about their own security – including Ja Morant, who’s been the cornerstone of the Memphis Grizzlies since they selected him second overall in 2019.
But the Grizzlies aren’t having any of that speculation. General Manager Zach Kleiman quickly addressed these swirling rumors in a conversation with Drew Hill of The Daily Memphian.
His stance? They’re not even entertaining the idea of trading their star point guard.
“I can’t blame other ‘executives’ for fantasizing about us trading Ja. But it’s just that – fantasy. We are not trading Ja. Continue to underestimate Ja, this team and this city, and we will let our performance on the floor speak for itself. I’m not going to give this nonsense further oxygen and look forward to getting back to basketball,” Kleiman told Hill, who shared the quote on X.Grizzlies GM Zach Kleiman addresses report that Grizzlies could look to trade Ja this summer

— Drew Hill (@DrewHill_DM) February 19, 2025
The numbers back up Kleiman’s confidence. Morant continues to drive the Grizzlies’ success, marking his fourth consecutive season averaging at least 20 points and seven assists per game.
Moreover, the financial picture in Memphis looks stable – the team has plenty of salary cap space and is well below the luxury tax.
This includes their core players: Morant, Jaren Jackson Jr., and Desmond Bane.
Speaking of Jackson, while he’s eligible for an extension this summer, the Grizzlies might benefit from waiting until 2026.
The Grizzlies have built something special, with their top eight scorers this season all being 26 or younger.
Trading Morant would mean dismantling years of careful team construction – a move that makes little sense given their current trajectory and financial flexibility.
