Brad Stevens and the pursuit of immortality

gettyimages-1203110512.jpg

Pop quiz: Who was the GM of the Cleveland Cavaliers when LeBron James brought a championship back to Akron? How about the Bucks in 2021? Dallas in 2011?

The sickos reading this are proudly sat at home, on the train to work, or on a well-deserved bathroom break, and they’ve remembered David Griffin, Jon Horst, and Donnie Nelson. Good on them: three points to Gryffindor.

I’d posit to you that you’re in the minority if you nailed all three. And if the majority of basketball fans don’t know who was responsible for some of the greatest championship wins of the modern era, then Brad Stevens still has work to do before he can walk the NBA halls of Valhalla.

To many, the upcoming season sees the Celtics in a state of suspended animation, waiting hopelessly for the return of their franchise hero. We’re cast as the helpless princess atop the tower with our knight in shining armor’s return certain but distant. If this were a book, you’d be tempted to skip the chapter and get to the good bits.

For Brad Stevens, though, this is the start of the season that separates him from the David Griffins of the world and, hopefully, secures his legacy as one of the brightest basketball minds of the 21st century.

Don’t get too attached

Stevens has already made a slew of tough choices this offseason: Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porziņģis, Al Horford, and Luke Kornet are all suiting up for new teams in October. This is an unfamiliar roster and now that the hardest decisions are behind him, this season has to be about building on the margins.

Often, championship rosters get trapped, locked in for better or worse to the core that carried them to glory. Toronto in 2019, Milwaukee in 2021, and Denver in 2023 all became expensive, asset-strapped, and increasingly reliant on an aging core. The bond forged by a championship is hard to break. Front offices stick to the original construction, only to watch the team gradually fade and sour the glory days with a bitter finish.

For the Celtics, Tatum’s injury has allowed for a guilt-free reset. Stevens has maneuvered Boston out of second-apron restrictions, though at the cost of real quality. This may not be the year to pull off a Kevin Garnett-level swing like 2008, but I hope Stevens cycles through the non-essential pieces. Tatum, Derrick White, Jaylen Brown, and Payton Pritchard are clearly long-term pillars of this Celtics team. Everyone else (sorry, Sam Hauser) is fighting to prove they belong on the next great Celtics squad.

If players don’t profile as playoff ready for 2026/27 and beyond, then permanent contracts shouldn’t tie Boston’s hands.

To me, the last team to go through a season from hell in a supposed contention window was the Memphis Grizzlies in 2023/24. Scoff if you want, but the Grizzlies had posted back-to-back 50+ win seasons. Off-court controversy and injuries meant the 23/24 campaign was anything but sunshine and rainbows. Ja Morant played a paltry nine games, and the FedExForum faithful only saw nine victories in a 27–55 season. GM Zach Kleiman, an Executive of the Year winner like Stevens, put the grind in Grind City as Memphis churned through 33 players in the regular season, an NBA record.

Perhaps the likes of Luka Garza, Neemias Queta and Josh Minott emerge as playoff ready this season but if they don’t, I hope Stevens advocates for guys like Amari Williams, Drew Petterson, RJ Luis and whatever G-League star he falls in love with on a late-night synergy binge instead of the Celtics sticking with mediocrity. In giving chances to a record number of players, Kleiman & Co. discovered players like Jay Huff, Vince Williams Jr, GG Jackson, and Scottie Pippen Jr. Making the most of that skippable chapter could set the Celts up for an exciting rebirth in 26/27. I hope Stevens can show that his expertise extend to an area that going into his fifth season are so far uncharted.

Sun’s getting real low

Boston has their big green maniacal monster. Joe Mazzulla owns the highest winning percentage of any coach in NBA history, winning 74% of his first 246 regular season games, by also having incredibly high standards, aggressively innovative, and a deadpan response that can quash the queasiest of media probes. Mazzulla is a top-tier coach: a perfect spearhead in any race for a championship. I do, however, worry that if Joe had hair, this would be the season that he pulls it out.

I see real frustration on the horizon this season as Mazzulla adapts to working with a group of players that may not execute to an assassin-level standard. It’s up to the players to continue to deliver, and it’s up to Mazzulla to work with what he has at his disposal.

But as the master of ceremonies, Stevens will likely have to manage Joe through this year, and that presents a real challenge. Am I asking Stevens to channel Zach Kleiman and Natasha Romanov in my season preview? Yes. A tall task? Yes. But it’s one that I think Stevens can manage.

A world-class coach at the college and NBA level, Stevens has the management skills to stop Mazzulla from smashing the culture they’ve worked so hard to build together—before unleashing him, unleashing the anger of a frustrating season on a terrified Eastern Conference in 2026/27.

Steering the ship

The end goal is Banner 19, and it can be achieved in many different ways. There’ll be arguments to preserve a winning culture across the organization. Scrape tooth and nail to make the postseason. Value the experience that players get in uncomfortable roles and carry that new knowledge and new confidence into an improved championship roster in 12 months time.

Door #2 is the quiet quit (the 76ers last year).

Regular season games become a masochism litmus test for your average Celtics fan. How much pain can you take if there’s a tantalizing reward at the end of the rainbow? Many fans and analysts are advocating for a development season next year — one that results in a top-3 pick in a loaded 2026 draft class. If a year from hell can result in a franchise-changing star arriving to turbocharge the back half of the 2020s, then maybe we’re all suckers for punishment.

There’s real merit to either approach, and one or two more injuries to key figures could result in the organization’s hand being forced rather than chosen by leadership. But, heading into next season, the Celtics need to have a clear approach in mind. It’ll be up to Stevens to make a decision that could define the future of the C’s for the next decade.

gettyimages-2176233931.jpg

Final Thoughts

This is a season of titanic proportions for Brad and the Boston Celtics. More difficult decisions are down the road. Stevens will have to prove himself in areas unfamiliar to a contending GM. A tough year is ahead.

Get it right, and Stevens goes down in history with the Pat Riley, Jerry West, and Red Auerbach, one of the best front office heads in NBA history. Get it wrong, and, morbid as it may seem, Stevens could end up a rather difficult trivia question in a decade or two.

Anfernee Simons opens up on Celtics trade: “I want to win”

gettyimages-2237766763.jpg

BOSTON – Anfernee Simons’ face lit up as he sat at the Auerbach Center podium for the very first time.

The 26-year-old guard, donning his Boston Celtics uniform, reflected on the June trade that ended his 7-year Portland Trail Blazers tenure.

“I was super excited for the opportunity to come here and join a culture that’s already been set and something that was going to help my career out tremendously, just playing at the highest level, winning basketball,” Simons said.

“That’s what I was excited about.”

When Simons was first traded to the Celtics in the trade that sent Jrue Holiday to the Blazers, it wasn’t clear whether he’d immediately be traded to another team in another cost-cutting move, or whether he’d become a core part of the Celtics in the coming season.

But training camp has now begun, and Simons seems slated to be a central part of the team’s roster for the coming season.

“He is an electric scorer,” Brad Stevens said at Media Day. “He is an outstanding shooter. He is a guy that teams will legitimately be thinking about when they enter the game, right? That’s a scouting report asterisks guy, right? You have to know him inside and out, because he’s liable to go off.”

The Celtics would know – last time Simons played at TD Garden, he erupted for 30 points (you might recall that game; his future backcourt mates, Derrick White and reigning Sixth Man of the Year Payton Pritchard, each went for 40+ points that evening).

But Simons is eager to show that he can do more than just score.

Yes, he’s averaged at least 19 points in each of the past three seasons. And, Simons has scored at least 30 points 39 times in his NBA career.

But, it’s the other end of the floor — the defensive end — that’s long raised questions.

Anfernee Simons is working toward being a better defender for the Celtics

Joe Mazzulla and Anfernee Simons have had conversations around how Simons can improve defensively, and the Celtics’ head coach is pushing Simons to maximize his efforts on that end.

“He always says, ‘You’re not as bad as people think you are,’ Simons quipped. “And so that’s good to hear.”

Mazzulla said at Media Day that for Simons, it’s about doing a little bit of everything.

“The message is the same: don’t put yourself in a box about how you can impact the game,” Joe Mazzulla said. “You need to be able to impact it in different ways, and you have to have balance.”

Stevens thinks Simons will make strides as a playmaker this season. Last year, Simons averaged 4.8 assists per game. The year before, he averaged 5.5 dimes a night. He’ll have several versatile scorers to work with, namely Brown, White, and Pritchard.

“His passing has been pretty good throughout his career, and his ability to create,” Stevens said. “And so you hope, as the guy gets to be 26 years old now, that he continues to grow in all those areas.”

Simons expects that he’ll be lower on the Celtics’ pecking order of offensive options than he was on a rebuilding Blazers squad, where he was the leading scorer.

But he’s embracing that.

“We got Jaylen Brown that’s taking that responsibility,” Simons said. “So I’m pretty excited about being able to contribute in a different way, maybe closer to how I was at the beginning of my career, when I was playing with Dame [Lillard] and CJ [McCollum].”

Still, the fact that he has multiple years of experience as the No. 1 guy should prepare him well for the coming year.

“I learned a lot from being, I guess you could say, the number one option on the team – whether dealing with the best defenders guarding me each and every game, different defensive coverages, getting double-teamed, blitzed,” Simons said.

And now, he’s simply happy to be joining a winning culture and playing for Mazzulla, whom he’s gotten to know well this past summer.

“Joe is pushing me every single day, and being in this type of environment is going to bring the best out in me,” Simons said, noting that fans can expect to see from him some things they might not have seen from him in the past. “That’s one of the things I’m excited about – just being around other great players like JB, Derrick, Payton, Sam – they all played winning basketball at a high level for multiple years now, and I want to be able to join and contribute to that as well.”

Anfernee Simons seems super energized to be a Celtic:

— Noa Dalzell 🏀 (@NoaDalzell) September 29, 2025

A popular offseason discussion has centered around whether Simons or Pritchard would start for the Celtics alongside Derrick White.

On Media Day, both players made clear that they didn’t care about whether they’d be coming off the bench.

“We want to win, and I want to win,” Simons said. “I want to contribute to winning at the highest level. And so whatever, how that looks, I’m fine with.”

Xavier Tillman lost 12 pounds after knee issues hampered him last season

gettyimages-2207944788.jpg

BOSTON — Xavier Tillman changed his diet, focusing on chicken, salmon and rice this offseason on his way to losing 12 pounds — something he believes should aid the recovery a March stem cell injection initiated after his left knee swelling returned in January. He fell out of the Celtics’ rotation early to begin the first season of a two-year deal following the 2024 championship he contributed to, and didn’t play any significant minutes into 2025.

“From a playing perspective, it was very hard, wanting to play, wanting to contribute,” he said after practice on Tuesday. “But I was going through stuff myself, like my knee would have days where it’d swell up into a balloon after I’d have one scrimmage, so I knew, consistency-wise, I could be there to support, but as far as my actual play, I couldn’t do everything I wanted to do.”

Following an intense first training camp practice where the big men even sprinted the floor as part of a new fast-paced attack the Celtics are employing, Tillman appeared long after the court cleared for his first session with reporters since a spot start in his return to Memphis. He spent the time between his press conference and the end of practice stretching, a routine he started surprisingly late in his career as an effort to loosen his hips and calves, alleviating knee pain that started following a meniscus tear in 2024, when the Celtics acquired him from the Grizzlies. He missed six of his first seven games with Boston, eventually returning to the floor and becoming a depth contributor to their title run.

Tillman underwent surgery that offseason to address frequent swelling in the knee, and that held up into next season where he didn’t land on the injury report until the spring, when aforementioned troubles began. The injection he received in March worked better than the scope and he dealt with minimal knee trouble this summer. The weight loss, improved health and open door for playing time at center reinvigorated him into this new year where he’ll play alongside Chris Boucher, Neemias Queta and old friend Luka Garza, who he competed with in high school and college.

“This is a different vibe of training camp than before with a lot of young guys so we got after it,” Tillman said. “Running around a lot, coaches screaming, you’re turning your head getting to the next spot. It was fun.”

Brad Stevens was non-committal about naming a front-runner at center on Media Day despite giving Queta a good shot following a strong offseason and continuous growth into his third season with Boston. Teammates have praised Garza’s summer improvement and early workouts, while Boucher should play significant minutes between the four and the five. That leaves some uncertainty over what’s left for Tillman, though Stevens mentioned him also playing multiple positions in larger lineups over the summer as an answer for key offseason losses Kristaps Porziņģis, Luke Kornet and Al Horford.

Tillman turns only 27 next year, and mentioned learning from those veterans about professional habits. He hired a chef this offseason, and shot threes tirelessly. His strength remains defense, and he may prove versatile enough on that end to enter the rotation on a team that needs to find perimeter stops and rim protection. Joe Mazzulla, a spacing advocate, may hesitate to play lineups with limited shooting, but the depth situation at center should call for at least some minutes from a player who proved intriguing after his addition at the 2024 deadline and produced one of the most compelling moments of the Finals with his corner three. He became easy to forget since, and declared that he’s back to begin 2025-26.

“You’ll see my defense come back again where I’ll make cuts and do things where it’s like, ok, you can really switch and guard 1-5 and it’s because of my knee health,” Tillman said. “I got it back in the right direction.”

Ten statistical predictions for the Celtics this season

2200691432.jpg

Payton Pritchard has a chance to showcase his playmaking ability even more this season.

Watching a team with a clear identity and no question marks certainly has its perks, but there’s also beauty in following an unproven group with a blank canvas and lower expectations.

Anyone who claims to know exactly how this Celtics season will unfold is either lying or a basketball genius. At the same time, it’s fun to guess what will happen. If I’m right, I can reference this article and say I told you so; if I’m wrong, you can reference this article and say you told me so (or we can collectively agree to pretend it never happened).

With that in mind, here are ten statistical predictions that are 100 percent guaranteed to either be right or wrong.

1. Payton Pritchard will average five-plus assists.

Payton Pritchard has increased his assist total each of the past two seasons, including a career-high 3.5 per game last year.

There’s reason to believe that number will continue to improve, and I have a hunch he’ll be able to push it above five per game this year. Pritchard gets a lot of love for his shotmaking (for good reason), but he’s also an excellent passer. With even more opportunity, he’ll be able to showcase that part of his game on a consistent basis.

2. Jaylen Brown will finish top-five in the league in scoring.

It’s easy to forget, but Jaylen Brown averaged 26.6 points per game in the 2022-23 season. That number fell to 23 two years ago and 22.2 last year.

Even with more attention on him, Brown should be able to boost that total this year. His volume will almost certainly go up, which could lead to some 40-plus-point performances. Jayson Tatum finished fifth in the league in scoring last year at 26.8 points per game, and there’s reason to believe Brown will be in that ballpark and crack the top five this year.

All eyes on Year 10 for Jaylen Brown 👀 pic.twitter.com/TwFuV1ltqH

— NBA (@NBA) September 29, 2025

3. The Celtics won’t lead the league in 3-pointers made or attempted.

Last year, the Celtics led the NBA in both 3-pointers made (17.8 per game) and attempted (48.2 per game). This season, while they’ll still be near the top of both categories, they won’t lead the league in either.

The loss to the Knicks last year was a not-so-subtle reminder that offenses need to be versatile and multi-dimensional. This year, there will be an emphasis on expanding their arsenal and ensuring they can score in many ways.

4. Anfernee Simons will be the Celtics’ second-leading scorer.

It could be Derrick White or Pritchard, but I believe newcomer Anfernee Simons will finish second on the team in scoring this season. He’s not a perfect player, but I don’t think the majority of Celtics fans realize just how dynamic he is with the ball in his hands.

He’s averaged 17-plus each of the past four seasons, including 22.6 two years ago. Simons is a creative shot-maker, and with Brown, Pritchard and White by his side, defenses won’t be able to double him frequently.

Anfernee Simons on getting traded to Boston:

"I was super excited about the opportunity to come here and join a culture that's already been set … playing at the highest level."
@CLNSMedia pic.twitter.com/FpgqKNqokw

— Celtics on CLNS (@CelticsCLNS) September 29, 2025

5. Derrick White finishes top-30 in both steals and blocks.

White has a chance to make an All-Defense Team this year. Last year, he averaged 1.1 blocks and 0.9 steals and was just outside the top 30 in both categories. This year, those numbers increase slightly to 1.3 blocks and 1.1 steals, and he gets in for each.

6. Neemias Queta plays 20-plus minutes a night.

The opportunity is there for Neemias Queta, and I believe he’ll maximize it. He averaged 13.9 minutes per game a season ago, and I expect that number to go to 20-plus this year.

Even if the Celtics rotate many players in and out, Queta has established himself as someone head coach Joe Mazzulla can really trust.

7. Boston finishes in the bottom-10 in rebounds per game.

Queta helps, and Luka Garza and Chris Boucher will do their part as well, but this team just isn’t equipped to be consistent on the boards. It will be more glaring in some games than others, but overall, rebounding will be a weakness.

8. They have both a five-game winning streak and five-game losing streak along the way.

This feels like it’s going to be an up-and-down season. It won’t always be rosy, and it won’t always be bleak, but it may be both at certain times. Ebbs and flows are inevitable, but I believe this team may be more susceptible to swings than the average group.

9. Jayson Tatum will play at least one game.

If the Celtics are in contention, and Jayson Tatum keeps progressing like he has, there’s a chance he’ll end up returning to action this year. If the Celtics sneak into the playoffs and get him back for the postseason run, it could be straight-up electric.

5 months ✅

— Jayson Tatum (@jaytatum0) September 30, 2025

10. The Celtics finish 44-38 and get the 6-seed.

I, for one, can’t wait to see how this season plays out. This team will be better than people think, and if Tatum does return, anything is possible.

“That is the spark”: Payton Pritchard will be electric next season

gettyimages-2237762288.jpg

Sixth man or starter. Doesn’t matter. Payton Pritchard is ready to light it up.

In his age-28 season, with changes to the roster and a Sixth Man of the Year award already on the mantle, Payton Pritchard could be forgiven for swaggering into Media Day and treating the starting job as unquestionably his.

There was plenty to take from the former Oregon guard’s Media Day duties, but a few quotes stood out:

“It does not matter to me. Starting or coming off the bench is something that I have no control over. That’s Joe’s decision. My only mindset is when I touch that floor, I bring my best.”

Like his new backcourt mate Anfernee Simons, it’s winning — not starting — that Pritchard is focusing on this year. In a season where championship ambitions are more aspirational than rational, the average fan or front office member may have feared that personal motivations could take precedence over team goals. That does not appear to be the case for the sixth-year guard.

Payton being ready to fill any role will be sweet music in Joe Mazzulla’s ears. Tied down to a bargain contract until the end of the 27/28 season, Payton may well earn that starting spot in a training camp battle with Simons but making it clear that he’s a success-first, spotlight-second player will continue to keep him in the highest regard at TD Garden.

“When my feet touch the floor, that is the spark.”

Further expanding upon the question of starting or subbing in, Pritchard ran with the idea of providing “the spark,” irregardless of his entry point into the contest. “If I’m coming off the bench, I will not be sour about it. I’ll be ready for when the six-minute mark comes, or whatever. I’m going to come in with the same type of energy and perform and play like you can’t take me off the court.”

Last year Pritchard posted a staggering +23.2 net rating in the first quarter of games for the Celtics, per NBA.com. More often than not, Payton was clocking in around that six-minute mark and, true to form, he made it very difficult for Mazzulla to sub him back out. Among regular contributors, Pritchard had the second-highest first-quarter net rating of any player on the roster, trailing only Luke Kornet. While many of us feel that Pritchard deserves that starting spot on Opening Night this season, perhaps that thrust will remain best utilized spearheading a second wave of offense after the game gets underway.

“I think play-making, making the game even easier for my teammates. That can be with passing, but also being a great screen setter and stuff like that. I feel like the gravity that I can attract off the ball, obviously, people don’t want me to shoot threes, so how do I use that to help teammates around me?”

In spite of just having the best individual season of his career, the 6-foot guard spoke to the areas he’ll look to improve this year. For the second consecutive Media Day, Pritchard referenced the importance of pull-up three-point shooting, but his main focus was on playmaking.

Pritch knows circumstances are different this year. Last season, in 322 regular-season minutes without Tatum or Brown on the floor, Payton Pritchard lineups still boasted a +5.2 net rating, equivalent to being the fourth-best team in the regular season. That being said, those minutes only accounted for 14% of his total regular-season minutes. This season, I would expect to see closer to 40% of Payton’s minutes coming without Brown on the court and, with that, he will slide up a rung on the ladder of responsibility

ready for the year ahead 👊

payton pritchard pic.twitter.com/UX3ZcvOcFx

— Boston Celtics (@celtics) September 29, 2025

Last year, Pritchard was a lethal play finisher, recording a TS% most big men would envy. This year, the true test of his game will be sustaining that efficiency as he becomes a higher priority on the scouting report, while also filling the creation hole left by JT’s injury and the noteworthy departures of the offseason. It is a tall task for a pint-sized point guard, but it seems the focus has been there this offseason to aid his attempt to handle the added offensive burden.

Media Day is always an exciting time. It represents hope, it signals that the off-season is drawing to a close and it’s got me bouncing off the walls waiting to see this team in action. Pritchard spoke well. He didn’t tell us that he added X pounds of muscle or that he grew an inch or two. He spoke about his willingness to sacrifice, his will to win and he gave a sneaky preview of the areas of his game to watch in the first few weeks of the 25/26 season.

That “spark” is in the air.

High role player IQ: Jordan Walsh’s path to becoming a Celtics mainstay

gettyimages-2237801901.jpg

Jordan Walsh has the tools to carve out a career as a high-level role player in the NBA and the 2025-2026 NBA season is his chance to seize that opportunity.

In Walsh’s short NBA career, there have already been a few ups and downs. From his tantalizing 2023 Summer League performance, where Walsh flashed a blend of athleticism and skill that was accompanied by his six-foot-seven height and seven-foot-three wingspan to some of the lows of standing idly by through stretches of last season, it felt like Walsh missed a chance to carve out a small role on a championship caliber team. Walsh has played 486 minutes in the NBA so far in his career. Most of which have come in garbage time. Jordan Walsh is still an unknown, and making any final judgments on what he can become as a player before he gets a real opportunity would be premature.

Last season, granted in sparse minutes, Walsh seemed to lack confidence; he was content to hang out in the corner, letting the game pass him by. To be a star role player, you need to bring energy and confidence to the court every night. Walsh appears to be finding that confidence this summer.

“I feel like I’ve come a long way with my three-point shot. I feel like if I’m open, it’s going in. And I feel like my team feels that way, and I feel like the coaching staff feels that way, too. Just trying to use that to my advantage, getting the respect of not only our guys but the defenders who close out on me, then using my athleticism to get downhill, get to the rim, kick it, cut off of that, kick it, set up ball screens, slip, whatever it is, being more athletic, being more involved.”

We saw signs of this newfound confidence at Summer League back in July. While it was an objectively bad basketball decision to get himself ejected from a game that the Summer Celtics were trying to win, it punctuated a strong Summer League campaign for Walsh, where he showed out as arguably the best player on the team. Walsh showcased his ability to knock down shots, collapse the defense, and make the right reads.

Admittedly, Summer League is not the NBA. We will see if he can carry this impact into the season. Ande Walsh played a higher usage role in Summer League than he will with the Celtics this season. Walsh understands what he needs to do in order to carve out a role on Joe Mazzulla’s team.

“Trying to switch my mentality to having what I call a high role player IQ. Just affecting the game without the ball.”

gettyimages-2223650731.jpg

It’s hard to draw up a better environment and culture for a young player to be drafted into than the Boston Celtics. While I’m sure Jordan Walsh wished he were seeing more court time over the past two seasons, being mentored by several Hall of Fame players who have played a variety of different roles throughout their careers was a fortunate situation to find himself in. Learning how to star in your role is essential for finding success on a winning team.

“One of the biggest things was I felt like Jrue Holiday was a big piece of that, I’ve tried to take as much as I can from him”.

When in doubt. Listening to Jrue Holiday is always a good plan.

Jordan Walsh has flashed the potential to be an impact player in the NBA. It will take more than flashes to become a mainstay of Mazzulla’s rotation and to become a mainstay of the NBA. It’s exciting to hear a young player confident in the work they’ve put in, and to be excited to bring those new skills and experience to the team. It will be fun to watch Walsh try to establish himself on this new iteration of the Boston Celtics.

Celtics training camp is different this year — how Joe Mazzulla, Jaylen Brown are setting the tone

gettyimages-2191620187.jpg

BOSTON, Mass. Joe Mazzulla understands that things are going to look different this season.

There’s no Al Horford nor Luke Kornet, both of whom served as fixtures of his Celtics’ tenure. No Jrue Holiday nor Kristaps Porzingis, veteran voices of the Banner 18 team who were traded away in an offseason overhaul.

And Jayson Tatum, out for most, if not all, of the season as he recovers from an Achilles rupture, is sidelined (though in the building, tirelessly focused on his rehab).

But, despite the absences, the Auerbach Center — the Celtics’ home base and practice facility — doesn’t feel empty.

It feels full.

Training camp is teeming with an influx of younger talent, from Anfernee Simons — the Portland Trail Blazers’ leading scorer for the past two seasons — to more unproven players like Luka Garza and Josh Minott, who have shown plenty of promise in their early days. Longtime Toronto Raptors big man Chris Boucher and rookie Hugo Gonzalez round out the new additions.

“This is a different vibe of training camp with a lot younger guys than before, so we got after it,” said Xavier Tillman, who is entering his third season with the Celtics. “[We’re] running around a lot, coaches screaming, you’re kind of just turning your head getting to the next spot. But it was fun. It was good.”

gettyimages-2173711260.jpg

Sam Cassell, the Celtics’ top assistant coach, said on 98.5 Sports Hub that he’s never seen a training camp quite like this one.

“I’ve been in this business 34 years,” Cassell said. “And this is the hardest training camp [I’ve seen] right now.”

With so much talent out the door, the Celtics recognize the importance of being the hardest-playing, most connected team. That process started 12 weeks ago.

Camp is the culmination of a summer of tireless work

This summer, most Celtics players have been in the building for months. That wasn’t the case last offseason, when the team was fresh off a championship and three players played for the Olympic basketball team.

Tatum and Brown both rehabbed their respective offseason surgeries in Boston. Payton Pritchard spent some time in Cape Cod, Spain, and Oregon, but he’s been working out daily in the Auerbach Center since August.

Derrick White was in Colorado for much of the offseason, but returned last month as well. Neemias Queta was in Portugal — and then Latvia, for EuroBasket — but shot back to Beantown upon the tournament’s conclusion.

And, the younger guys — Baylor Scheierman, Jordan Walsh, Hugo Gonzalez — have since become fixtures of the facility since Summer League concluded in Las Vegas.

“We’ve been here all summer,” Scheierman said, explaining that workouts have brought everyone closer. “All of the guys really have become super comfortable with what the coaches are preaching to us.”

As such, new duos and social dynamics are forming. For example, Xavier Tillman and Luka Garza — once college rivals playing for Michigan State and Iowa, respectively — typically shoot together for 20 to 40 minutes a day.

“Sam [Hauser] calls us the buffaloes,” Tillman said with a smile, explaining he got up a “tireless” amount of three-point shots in the summer after a disappointing 2024-25 season.

Players have been honing in on individual weaknesses ahead of a season where the margin of error will be noticeably thinner. For weeks now, Anfernee Simons has been methodically working on defensive playmaking drills focused on getting in passing lanes, improving defensive positioning, and racking up deflections.

“Those things are things I never really worked on or been taught,” Simons said. “And so I was happy that that was the focus.”

I asked Anfernee Simons about the technique side of improving his defense as he’s spent the last month doing defensive playmaking drills with the coaching staff:

Still, as intense as summer workouts have been to date, things reached another level when camp officially tipped off on Monday.

For one, it’s the first time that the entire roster is present, all at once. And, the intensity and pace immediately picks up. There’s also the collective understanding that real games are inching closer; the Celtics’ preseason officially tips off next Wednesday in Memphis.

“You should have a foundation based on what you’ve been able to do,” Mazzulla said. “So, you’re able to move at a faster pace, you’re able to teach a little bit more. But, really it’s just the intensity and the mindset — this is preseason training camp.”

In the background, Exhibit 10 and two-way players anchor camp

Alongside the 14 Celtics players who are on standard contracts (five of them brand-new), three training camp attendees are on two-way contracts and four are on training camp (Exhibit 10) deals. The Exhibit 10 players — Kendall Brown, Jalen Bridges, Wendell Moore, and Ron Harper Jr. — are fighting for a more certain NBA opportunity and will join the Maine Celtics at the conclusion of camp. (Brown and Bridges also played on the Celtics’ Summer League team in July).

The two-way players — Max Shulga, Amari Williams, and RJ Luis — are also likely to spend most of the season in Maine. In the meantime, they’re deepening their relationship with Phil Pressey, the first-time head coach of the Celtics’ G-League affiliate, who is at training camp every day.

That means that exactly onethird of training camp participants arrive with the understanding that their days with the parent club are numbered. But, for the weeks that they’re with the team for preseason, they’re just as much a part of the program as anyone else; for example, at the Celtics’ opening day spikeball tournament, Derrick White was paired up with training camp returnee Ron Harper Jr., as the team captured on TikTok. (It’s Harper Jr’s second consecutive year attending Celtics training camp).

At camp, Mazzulla expects the non-rostered players to learn the system and push one another the same as the more high-profile guys on the team.

“It’s the same standard as everyone else,” he said. “Any way they can help us get better — they do that.”

“Everyone’s got to know what they do really matters, and whether it’s the first guy or the 15th guy. If they don’t feel like they’re empowered, [that] they can impact winning, then we just can’t have the balance, and the depth, and the culture that we need.”

Joe Mazzulla, Jaylen Brown prioritize off-court connections

As he leads training camp, Mazzulla rejects being called ‘coach’ by his players.

“I can’t even explain the relationship,” Simons said. “It’s, like, almost as a mentor.”

That translates to an expedited level of buy-in, Simons explained: “It makes you want to go out there and play for him even more when you have that connection off the court. And he’s really invested in the off-court life.”

Simons said Mazzulla often asks about everyone’s kids. He’s dropped things off at Simons’ new home, making sure that his acclimation to Boston is smooth. He’s learning what makes the new guys tick.

“He takes a lot of time to personalize his relationships with people,” Josh Minott said. “He doesn’t talk to any two people the same way.”

Last month, Mazzulla and several members of the coaching staff attended Chris Boucher’s baptism, a gesture that made the 32-year-old feel like he was officially a part of the “brotherhood.”

“It’s not easy to move and start over again,” Boucher said of his relocation from Toronto. “But Joe really helped me with that. Brad, too. It’s been a really, really, really warm welcome.”

And as such, in separate interviews, both Garza and Minott — former Minnesota Timberwolves teammates — have offered that they’d “run through a brick wall” for Mazzulla.

“He just has that effect on people,” Minott said.

“Every time he says something, it’s incredibly impactful,” Garza said.

Asked Luka Garza about his early Joe Mazzulla impressions:

“Every time he says something, it’s just incredibly impactful… He has that fire that makes you want to run through a brick wall for him.” pic.twitter.com/uYJwEtFPAb

— Noa Dalzell 🏀 (@NoaDalzell) September 30, 2025

But, it’s not just the Celtics’ head coach who recognizes the importance of cultivating deep off-court bonds.

Jaylen Brown, the team’s most veteran player, has made a concerted effort to bring players together off the court — whether that’s by facilitating team bonding events (a portion of the team together attended an NBA YoungBoy concert on Sunday) or by having players over at his home.

“JB has always been a leader for us,” Scheierman said.

“We’ve got a whole new team, and people think that all the pieces are supposed to fit together,” Brown said on NBC Sports Boston on Monday. “It doesn’t work like that.”

Last year at training camp, there were few new faces, with the entire Banner 18 roster, save for Svi Mykhailiuk and Oshae Brissett, returning for another shot at a title. This year, that’s not the case.

“We’ve got to make up for lost time to make sure that the product when we get to the first game of the season is there,” Brown said. “We got to spend some more time with each other and really try to chemistry-build as much as possible, from now until the end of the season. It takes work.”

Brown and six of his new Celtics teammates attended a Patriots game last weekend.

Jaylen Brown and the Celtics rookies are on the sidelines for the Patriots game.
@CLNSMedia pic.twitter.com/cDsZlM5sLd

— Celtics on CLNS (@CelticsCLNS) September 28, 2025

“[It’s] dinners, concerts, events, inviting guys to the crib, the house — all that type of stuff,” Brown said.

The Auerbach Center feels different. The absence of Horford, Holiday, and other veteran voices means that new guys are finding their voices and unique leadership styles.

At the same time, despite the losses, there’s an undeniable sense of energy and connection surrounding camp. With Opening Night just a few weeks away, there’s plenty of new schemes and terminology for everyone to learn.

But, the laughter, personal connections, and team bondings matter too.

“We’re trying to build a family with the new guys,” Jordan Walsh said. “That’s important.”

Setting Expectations for Anfernee Simons’ Defense

gettyimages-2214867338.jpg

There’s been discussion aplenty about one of the newest Boston Celtics, Anfernee Simons. He’s certainly a cause for confusion; the average NBA fan is unsure if he’s 22 years old or 30. Simons has seemingly been around forever, but is still young. And for a 26-year-old averaging 19.9 points and 4.5 assists per game on 50% from two, 38% from three, and 90% from the line over the past four seasons, he was treated as salary matching instead of a legitimate asset. Many are confused as to why a player like Anfernee was treated as a throw-in.

So, why is the league so down on Simons? Defense, defense, defense.

If there’s one thing people in NBA circles agree on, it’s that he is a rough defender. But one key person isn’t down on Simons’ defense: Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla. Hear from Simons himself about what his new coach is telling him.

Anfernee Simons on his defense:

“It’s just a matter of if I want to do it or not. It's really that simple. Coming into a culture like this, you have to be able to adapt… And [Joe Mazzulla] always says that [I’m] not as bad as people think [I am]. So that's good to hear.” pic.twitter.com/wLhn38LjJa

— Justin Turpin (@JustinmTurpin) September 29, 2025

According to Simons, he and Mazzulla have been tied at the hip all offseason, and it shows. Only someone spending an excessive amount of time with Boston’s coach-philosopher says that their defense is entirely up to how badly they want it. But Simons is going to have to do a lot more than simply want it. When you break down the defensive film from last year in Portland, things are ugly.

Looking under the hood

He’s got measurements you’d want from a point-of-attack defender at 6’3” with a +4 wingspan. His athleticism is fine by NBA standards, and you’d think he could make an impact. But it’s the technical aspects that do him in as a point-of-attack defender; taking bad angles on screens, being unable to work over screens, and struggling to contest shots are frequent problems.

There's a reason you don't see Anfernee Simons as an on-ball defender very often. Bad screen navigator, takes poor angles on screens, doesn't have the length to bother ballhandlers even when he sticks to them pic.twitter.com/2T3LvVEjgY

Portland had few defensive weak links last year, and could afford to hide Simons off the ball. But things weren’t much better there. A serial ball-watcher, Simons was often late to make his rotations and closeouts. Switches were a significant problem. And he often ran around like a chicken without a head when the rotations got long and complicated.

It was typical to see Simons being hunted, even when off the ball, with pin-down screens, curls, flares, and all sorts of actions to free shooters. Sometimes it was just as simple as a dribble handoff to see if he’d confuse the switch, or a basic backdoor cut. It’s the reason why his defensive numbers look so rough.

Despite having most of his 70 starts this year come alongside Toumani Camara and Deni Avdija, two superb defenders, Portland’s defense was much worse with Simons on the floor than off. According to Cleaning the Glass, the Blazers’ defense was 2.5 points per 100 possessions worse with Anfernee on the court; that’s a 28th percentile mark. It’s actually an improvement from his previous season, where they were 5.3 points per 100 worse.

Individual numbers don’t paint a favorable picture either. Simons’ 0.2% block rate in 2024/25 was the lowest amongst players to play at least 2,000 minutes. For steal rate, only Bub Carrington, Keyonte George, and Devin Booker played 2,000 minutes at the guard spots and had worse marks. His bad on/offs and lack of stat impact culminated in a -1.3 defensive estimated plus-minus, per Dunks and Threes. That was 12th percentile amongst all defenders. Somehow this was an improvement on last season, where Simons’ -2.8 D-EPM was the worst mark in the league.

Setting expectations

There are factors to consider here. When Simons was drafted, Neil Olshey was the GM and Terry Stotts was the head coach. Now Chauncey Billups is at the helm, looking to instill a defense-first ethos, and Joe Cronin makes the front office calls. It’s not crazy to assume that Simons may have seen the writing on the wall, and his effort suffered as a result — difficult to perform well in a job when you know you’re going to be fired.

Simons is also heading into a contract year, hoping to hit free agency next year at 27 on the heels of an excellent all-around season. Once again surrounded by good defenders, his assignment difficulty will be low. An uptick in focus and defensive technique could produce passable results that justify his presence on the floor.

Perhaps Joe Mazzulla’s philosophy has rubbed off on Simons this offseason, and he’s ready to compete defensively. But it’s unheard of to see a player jump from a bottom-tier defender to a good one, let alone average. When judging Simons’ defense this season, make sure you go into your judgments with the proper expectations. That way, you’ll never be disappointed.
