The Celtics just beat the Knicks so badly that Grimace is now a Bostonian

You can also call it “Deuce York” now

Saturday’s beatdown of the New York Knicks was probably the most I’ve laughed while watching a Boston Celtics game all season. Well, maybe not as much as I did on ring night, which was also against the Knicks.

The Knicks, by the way, were the team that many felt had put themselves on the Celtics’ level over the summer when they acquired Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges.

New York has now played and been humiliated by the reigning champions twice.

It was evident right from the very first bucket of the night that it was going to be Boston’s game, despite being without both Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday.

Jayson Tatum’s loud dunk over Precious Achiuwa accounted for the first two of his 40 points at Madison Square “Garden.”

The Knicks were in shambles trying to stop Boston’s superstar forward. He lit them up from just about everywhere on the floor and went nuclear at the most crucial part of the game — the third quarter. New York had cut the Celtics’ lead down to just three in that frame and then Tatum and Derrick White decided that they’d seen enough.

I mean, look at this.

Tatum meticulously attacked Mikal Bridges (five first-rounders, btw) or whichever Knick had the misfortune of trying to check him. He made five straight shots in the closing minutes of the period and absolutely broke the Knicks and their fans.

The Tatum/White combo combined to score 33 points in the quarter, helping Boston increase the difference back to 20 points heading into the fourth.

The Celtics comfortably closed this one out behind a strong final stint from Payton Pritchard. After helping the team build their initial lead in the first half with 14 second-quarter points, he essentially gave the Knicks a replay of the whole thing in the fourth. Pritchard iced the game by sinking four of his five attempts en route to 11 fourth-quarter points.

Of course, there was this laugher, which served as the knockout blow.

By the end of the night, New York fans were booing, Celtics fans were making themselves heard, and any semblance of confidence had been ripped away from the Knicks.

Oh, and Grimace is officially a Bostonian.

“Do you mean the McDonald’s mascot?”

Yes, I mean the McDonald’s mascot.

The same people who would’ve had a championship parade (Bing Bong) on Saturday out in the snowstorm, had their Knicks beaten the Celtics, have adopted the purple monster as their own after he helped the Mets turn around their 2024 season.

Grimace threw out the first pitch at Citi Field on June 12. Up to that point, the Mets had been underwhelming, to say the least. Then, all of a sudden, they were winning games and eventually won their way to the National League Championship Series.

People went crazy over Grimace. There were Grimace costumes in the stands, on the subways, and there was even a Grimace seat dedicated at Citi Field.

Fraud New York Grimace

Fast forward to earlier this week, when McDonald’s began promoting their annual limited-time offering of the “Shamrock Shake.” This year, they decided to bring back Grimace’s supposed uncle, “Uncle O’Grimacey.

Apparently, O’Grimacey used to be a regular in McDonald’s ads back in the day, but I’d never seen nor heard of him before he popped up on my Twitter/X timeline this week.

O’Grimacey’s emergence couldn’t really come at a better time. He was the perfect trade deadline acquisition for the Celtics and it rules that there’s an Irish/Celtics themed version of the adopted New York mascot.

It’s a real shame that Grimace rides with the Cs now.

Bing bong.

Celtics-Knicks Notebook: Jayson Tatum spearheads massive win, “Big Luke” shines in start, the secret to Payton Pritchard’s big performance

Boston Celtics v New York Knicks

Joe Mazzulla agreed the win over the Knicks was one of the most complete games of the season.

NEW YORK CITY — No Kristaps Porzingis, no Jrue Holiday, no problem for the Celtics, who got back in the win column with a 131-104 decimation of the Knicks. The victory was led by Jayson Tatum, who exploded for 40 points on 7 threes, Luke Kornet, who had one of his most effective games as a Celtic, and Payton Pritchard, who posted back-to-back 20+ point games for the first time since December.

Oh, and there was Derrick White, who tallied 14 points in a huge third-quarter run that resoundingly put the game out of reach.

By the waning minutes of the ball game, “Let’s Go Celtics” chants reverberated through Madison Square Garden, a tune that’s become increasingly familiar as the Celtics continue their dominant road season (en route to a league-best 21-6 away record).

It was a win that several Celtics, including Joe Mazzulla, deemed one of the most complete of the year.

“I think for the entire 48 minutes, we played with a level of connectivity on both ends, and that’s the most important thing,” Mazzulla said, who was as animated as he’s been all year as the Celtics’ completed several second-half runs.

“It was great for us to respond the way that we did, especially with some guys out tonight,” Tatum said. “The way we were connected on both ends of the floor — our toughness showed tonight.”

Payton Pritchard agreed.

“The intensity, being locked in, it was definitely there tonight,” Pritchard said. “We’re capable of doing really great things — it’s gotta be every night.

Here’s what stood out from a resounding win at Madison Square Garden:

Luke Kornet shines as starter in place of Kristaps Porzingis

Kristaps Porzingis wasn’t on the injury report going into Saturday’s primetime matchup, and he seemed ready for a big game against the team that drafted him. During warmups, Porzingis chatted with MSG employees who he knew from his time as a Knick and went through what appeared to be his usual routine.

But, just minutes before tip-off, Porzingis was a late scratch with an illness. So, Mazzulla turned to Luke Kornet for the last-minute start and had his good friend Payton Pritchard deliver the news.

“Joe came in [to the locker room], and Luke wasn’t in here, so Joe told me to tell Luke to be ready to be in the starting lineup,” Pritchard recounted after the game. “But, he did a good job. Thrown in right away, he did his job tonight.”

It was more than good for Kornet, who tallied 14 points on a perfect 7-7 from the field, 12 rebounds (5 offensive), and 3 blocks. The Celtics outscored the Knicks by 21 points during Kornet’s 28 minutes. And, with the Celtics’ beginning the game with a double-big lineup of Al Horford and Kornet, Knicks’ All-Star center Karl Anthony-Towns was limited to just 9 points.

“Big Luke played his ass off today,” Tatum said, looking over to a nearby Kornet with a proud smile. “He really set the tone to start — contesting, blocking shots.”

Pritchard, who recorded 25 points on 9-13 shooting (6-8 from three), 4 assists, and 4 rebounds, praised the bench’s ability to step up when starters are missing.

“It’s a next-man mentality,” Pritchard said. “This group is very deep. We got a lot of talent. People are ready for the opportunity when they came, I know I am. And that carries through everybody, 1 through 15.”

Mazzulla echoed that sentiment, also praising Neemias Queta, who had 11 points, 8 rebounds, 1 block, and 1 steal in 26 minutes.

“It just gives guys an opportunity to step up,” Mazzulla said. “That’s the great thing about the locker room — guys are always ready.”

Jayson Tatum puts together a “special” performance in rout

Tatum finished the night with 40 points on 13-26 shooting, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. Nearly half of his scoring output — 19 points on 6-9 shooting — came in the third quarter, helping to effectively bury the Knicks.

“That was a special performance,” Mazzulla said.

“He was special from the first play on,” White echoed.

Pritchard praised Tatum for what he described as an “unbelievable” performance: “He didn’t rush his shots, he got to his spots, and he was money. He broke the lead open for us, and that’s what a superstar does, what he did tonight.”

Tatum broke down what drove his sense of urgency from the jump.

“We lost last game, and then finding out that KP was out right before the game, we knew it was going to be a challenge,” he said. “And, I saw Denzel Washington sitting courtside, so I was excited about that.”

Joe Mazzulla to @JustinmTurpin on Jayson Tatum entering the Top 10 in scoring:

“I think he’s still underrated. One of the best players out there.” pic.twitter.com/JaUKgWUvj2

— Noa Dalzell (@NoaDalzell) February 9, 2025

Tatum moved into 9th on the Celtics’ all-time scoring list Saturday. He also officially has more wins than any player since he joined the NBA.

“I think he’s still underrated,” Mazzulla said. “One of the best players out there.”

Payton Pritchard explodes for 25 points off the bench

With Kristaps Porzingis back in the lineup, Pritchard’s shot attempts and scoring have taken a hit in recent weeks, despite his efficiency remaining elite.

But, on Thursday, in the Celtics’ letdown loss to the Mavericks, the 27-year-old guard led a spirited comeback that saw a lineup of himself, Jordan Walsh, Drew Peterson, Neemias Queta, and Sam Hauser cut a 27-point fourth-quarter deficit to just 7.

The comeback was ultimately unsuccessful, as the Mavs’ starters were able to hang on, but it still infused life into a TD Garden crowd that desperately yearned for something to cheer for. And, it immensely helped Pritchard — who scored 17 points in that fourth-quarter rally — regain some offensive flow, which carried over to Saturday.

“I try to take advantage of those [opportunities],” Pritchard said. “You know, you can get stuck in a role sometimes, and you can become a little bit robotic, and I definitely get caught up in that at times. So, I always gotta remember to stay aggressive, even if the role doesn’t call for that at times.”

Asked Payton Pritchard about whether his 4th quarter push with the bench on Thursday carried into tonight:

“Definitely” pic.twitter.com/x8hQ2ANtnB

— Noa Dalzell (@NoaDalzell) February 9, 2025

Pritchard finished with 21 points on 9-15 shooting on Thursday, and followed that with 25 points on 9-13 shooting on Saturday.

“It definitely helps create that confidence going into the next game and just carrying that over,” he said. “I know my team needs me to be aggressive.”

Torrey Craig on the sidelines for the first time as a Celtic

Torrey Craig, the Celtics’ newest signee, addressed reporters Saturday morning at Celtics’ shootaround and expressed his excitement at joining a championship contender.

While he wasn’t active on Saturday night as he continues to work his way back from an ankle injury, Craig was locked into the game from the sidelines and emphatically celebrating the Celtics’ growing lead throughout the night, seemingly particularly stunned at Tatum’s takeover performance.

Earlier Saturday, Craig explained the decision to join the Celtics after he was waived by the Bulls last week.

“You always want to play for something and compete for something,” Craig said. “I’m a super competitor — and I want to play basketball the right way at the highest level. Just to get an opportunity to come play with these guys was a no-brainer.”

Mazzulla said pregame he was confident in Craig’s ability to come in right away and contribute.

“Played on a lot of good teams, a high-level defender, brings a lot of energy,” Mazzulla said. “Shot the ball well over the last three years, so a piece that we can add on both ends of the floor.”

And, while integrating midseason acquisitions can be difficult, Mazzulla believed the 34-year-old’s acclimation wouldn’t be too difficult.

“He’s versatile enough so where it could be seamless, from a tactical standpoint,” he said. “But obviously understanding the language and the situational stuff that comes up. But, just patient — obviously just give him a chance to learn the language, learn stuff. But at the same time, he’s played for a long time. So he can fit right in and help us at any time.”

Everyone loves playing in Madison Square Garden

In the backdrop of the win was the reality that the Celtics, like many NBA teams, love playing at Madison Square Garden.

Tatum himself admitted that the presence of celebrities like Denzel Washington made him want to put on a show, and Mazzulla said he could feel it from the sidelines as well.

“Once you get out there, and you feel the energy of the Garden, and you feel the energy of the two teams... it was obviously a game that the guys wanted,” Mazzulla said.

Pritchard, who is from Portland, Oregon, said he grew up watching games at MSG and dreamt of the chance to one day play there.

“Besides Boston, it’s probably the best place to play,” Tatum said. “They have all the celebrities, but they also have that edge about them. They know basketball.”

Behind another Tatum masterclass, Boston blows out Miami 103-85

The Celtics road their hot shooting in the second half to a dominant win over the Heat

Coming off of a dominating win over the New York Knicks, the Celtics took a trip down to South Beach for a matchup against the Miami Heat. Boston would beat Miami pretty handedly by a score of 103-85.

For the second game in a row, Jayson Tatum led the way for the Celtics with a dominant performance of 33 points and 8 rebounds on 13-26 shooting. Kristaps Porzingis pitched in with 17 points and 9 rebounds of his own while Al Horford turned back the clock with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds.

With Tyler Herro out, Boston’s defense suffocated Miami, holding the Heat to 34% shooting from the field and 24% shooting from three. The Celtics offense was cold to start but once the second quarter, the Heat could not slow them down.

On the three year anniversary of the Derrick White trade, it felt fitting that White scored the Celtics first points of the game with two free throws. Without JaBoston’s offense was cold early as they started the game shooting 2-13 from the field (1-10 from three).

Miami capitalized on Boston’s cold stretch by going on a 14-4 run to open up a double digit lead early as Bam Adebayo led the Heat with 9 points on 4-9 shooting.

With 2:37 left in the first half, Baylor Scheierman checked into the game to try and inject some energy in the Celtics offense. Boston was able to hit a few shots to end the quarter on a 9-2 run but still trailed Miami 24-18 at the end of the first quarter. The Celtics shooting was their downfall in the first quarter, shooting 6-25 from the field and 2-18 from three.

The Celtics energy completely shifted to open the second quarter as they opened on a 13-0 run. Boston completely stifled Miami on defense as the Heat went over six minutes without scoring a basket. Sam Hauser was the main catalyst for the Celtics offense as he lit up the Heat from beyond the arc, hitting 4 of his 5 first half threes in the second quarter alone.

Once Hauser went to the bench, it was Jayson Tatum’s turn to cook. After not making a shot in the first quarter, Tatum went on a 7-0 run by himself as the Celtics continued to dominate the Heat. Although Miami went on a 7-0 run to end the quarter, Boston still held a 52-43 lead going into the half.

From the 1:15 mark of the first quarter to the end of the second quarter, the Celtics went on a 39-19 run. After an awful first quarter shooting, the Celtics shot 12-20 from the field and 7-14 from three in the second quarter, completely flipping the momentum of the game.

Sam Hauser ended the first half as the leading scorer for the Celtics with 15 points on 5-8 shooting from three and Bam Adebayo led the Heat with 16 points on 5-11 shooting. Payton Pritchard also had a big first half, with a stat line of 5 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals.

The Celtics cold shooting returned to start the third quarter but back to back Al Horford buckets got Boston back on track. Horford scored 8 points in the third quarter alone to fuel a 16-5 Celtics run.

With Boston finding their groove, it was Jayson Tatum’s time to take over in the third quarter once again. Tatum went off for 20 points in the third quarter alone, embarrassing the Heat’s defense and with a Derrick White buzzer beater, the Celtics took an 88-65 lead.

The Celtics shot even better in the third quarter than they did in the second quarter, shooting 14-21 (66.7%) from the field and 7-13 (53.8%) from three. Boston dominated every facet of the game in the third quarter and Miami had no answers.

Even with Boston not getting off to a great start to the fourth quarter, Miami had no shooting what so ever and couldn’t capitalize. The Celtics just killed the clock in the fourth quarter and with another tough bucket by Jayson Tatum, Boston put in the stay ready group with 2:39 left to wrap up the ball game.

10 takeaways from the Celtics dominant win over the Heat

Boston Celtics v Miami Heat

Boston went down to South Beach and flexed their might once again.

1. Pure Dominance

In Miami’s first game against Boston without Jimmy Butler and with Tyler Herro out, the Celtics made quick work of the Heat in a 103-85 blowout victory.

Lead Tracker (via NBA.com)

After a slow first quarter, the Celtics really picked it up in the second and third quarter as they outscored the Heat 70-41 during that stretch. This was a pretty boring game overall as with Miami being down their best player, the Heat had no shooting on the floor and had no way of making this game competitive.

The Celtics cold shooting in the first and fourth quarters will make the percentages look bad but Boston’s offense was really humming in this game. They shot 39-85 (46%) from the field and 17-53 (32%) from three. Boston really dominated the painted area as they were able to take advantage of the Heat’s lack of rim protection.

Celtics Shot Zone Chart (via NBA.com)

2. Jayson Tatum: The King of the Third Quarter

After Jayson Tatum dropped 40 points on the New York Knicks on Saturday with 19 of those points coming in the third quarter, some may wonder what he was going to do for an encore.

After not making a basket in the first quarter, Tatum lit up the Heat for 33 points, 20 of which coming in the third quarter alone.

Boston Celtics v Miami Heat

Tatum started his third quarter performance with back-to-back three pointers over Andrew Wiggins. He then made an in and out dribble around an Al Horford screen and pulled up for a smooth fadeaway jumper over Kel’el Ware. Then he put his shoulder in to Wiggins’ chest and got off a finger roll that forced Erik Spoelstra to call a timeout.

— Boston Celtics (@celtics) February 11, 2025

This didn’t stop Tatum’s hot streak, as he continued to bully the Heat defenders for easy baskets. He drove his chest into Pelle Larson for a layup, then spun away from Terry Rozier on defense for a reverse layup, and finally, after crossing up Duncan Robinson, drove to the basket and got a tough and-1 bucket.

Jayson Tatum is currently averaging 9.3 points per game this season in the third quarter which is third in the NBA and is second in total third quarter points with 472.

— Dan Greenberg (@StoolGreenie) February 11, 2025

3. Vintage Horford performance

Not every night Al Horford is going to put up a big performance but when they do come along, it’s always a great sight to see. Horford had a double-double against the Heat with 16 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 blocks on 6-11 shooting from the field and 4-8 shooting from three.

Boston Celtics v Miami Heat

When the Celtics were struggling to start the third quarter, it was Horford who ignited the offense with 8 straight points. He started with getting Kel’el Ware to bite on a pump fake three and got to the paint to hit a floater over Bam Adebayo.

The next bucket came when Tatum drove to the rim and dropped off a pass to Kristaps Porzingis under the basket who kicked it out to a wide open Horford for three at the top of the arc.

The final basket of this run came with Horford setting a screen for Sam Hauser so he could receive a pass from Tatum. Horford popped out to the three-point line and Hauser found him on a behind the back bounce pass for a three over Ware.

Horford also did a great job when it came to defending Bam Adebayo and fighting for positioning under the basket for rebounds. The best play on Bam was when he was able to strip him in the second quarter in isolation that would count as a block.

4. Hauser shifted the energy

After the Celtics put up only 18 points on 6-25 shooting from the field and 2-18 from three in the first quarter and with Tatum going to the bench, the Celtics needed a spark. That spark’s name was Sam Hauser.

Hauser was on fire in the first half of this game and finished with 15 points on 5-8 shooting from three, with 12 of those points coming in the second quarter.

Boston Celtics v Miami Heat

Sam Hauser’s first three of the second quarter came on the fast break as when Porzingis was driving to the basket, he kicked it out to Hauser for a corner three.

The next three came when Payton Pritchard was double teamed on the baseline and threw a cross court pass to wide open Hauser in the same exact place as his first three of the quarter.

The third three of the quarter came after Derrick White collapsed the defense and found Duncan Robinson out of position defending Hauser. White made a simple bounce pass and Hauser rose up over a late contest from Robinson.

The final three of the quarter came on another fast break. After Pritchard stole the ball on the defense, he came down and found Hauser for a wide open three that caused the Heat to finally call a timeout.

5. Sneaky good Pritchard game

Payton Pritchard’s scoring numbers might not have looked impressive with only 5 points on 2-9 shooting but he had a great game in almost every other aspect of the game. He finished with 10 rebounds, 8 assists, 2 steals, and a +17 on the night as he did a great job facilitating the Celtics offense when Tatum was off the floor.

Boston Celtics v Miami Heat
Photo by Issac Baldizon/NBAE via Getty Images

The first pass that was really impressive came on Sam Hauser’s second three of the night. He was double teamed on the baseline and found Hauser for three on a cross court pass.

Another great pass was when Pritchard was driving to the rim, pump faked like he was going to shoot a layup that got Duncan Robinson in the air, and then found Kristaps Porzingis streaking down the lane for an emphatic dunk.

Ever see a unicorn fly pic.twitter.com/42gKttUwAK

— Boston Celtics (@celtics) February 11, 2025

6. Boston’s solid defense

The Celtics defense did a great job of making sure the Heat couldn’t find any rhythm on offense. Boston held Miami to only 34% shooting from the field and 24% shooting from three.

Boston did a great job getting out to Miami’s three point shooters and were able to force some timely turnovers that aided in the Celtics dominance in the second and third quarters.

Heat Shot Zone (via NBA.com)

One of the best defensive plays of the night for Boston was when Terry Rozier drove to the basket and Al Horford blocked him at the rim as he was rising up. Then when Bam Adebayo got the rebound, Jayson Tatum flew in and sent back his put back attempt on the same possession.

7. Starters balanced scoring

With the Celtics being undermanned tonight, only seven players scored points tonight with all but nine of their points (Pritchard: 5, Queta: 4) coming from the starting lineup. Jayson Tatum led the way with 33 points, Kristaps Porzingis had 17, Al Horford with 16, Sam Hauser with 15, and Derrick White with 13. The starting lineup combined to shoot 50% from the field and 38% from three.

Celtics Box Score (via NBA.com/Celtics)

8. Next man up mentality

With Jaylen Brown and Jrue Holiday out for the Celtics tonight, it was going to be up to the Stay Ready group to make an impact on tonight's game and they did not disappoint.

Boston got big scoring nights from Horford and Hauser while Pritchard did a great job of facilitating the offense. Luke Kornet made an impact on defense and Baylor Scheierman also got some rotation minutes as well late in the first quarter.

Horford even went out of his way to praise Hauser, Kornet and Pritchard in his postgame interview and specifically highlighted Luke Kornet. Horford said Kornet has been key to the identity of the Celtics and has done a great job on defense when it came to protecting the rim.

Al Horford really gave Luke Kornet a great shoutout when asked by @tvabby if the Celtics are getting back to their identity:

“I feel like Luke Kornet has been key for us when we talk about that identity and the way that we're going to play. He's protecting the rim at an amazing… https://t.co/7KS3W1Etl0 pic.twitter.com/i2kWtS4Njy

9. Road Dogs

With the Celtics win in Miami tonight, Boston has improved their league-leading road record to 22-6. As it stands right now, Boston has the 8th best road record in NBA history up to this point.

The last Celtics team to have a road record this good was the 2007-08 Celtics at 31-10. The best road record in NBA history came with the 2015-16 Golden State Warriors at 34-7.

When NBC Boston's Abby Chin asked Jayson Tatum about his thoughts on the Celtics road record, Tatum said, “we give up too many easy ones at home so we have to make up for it. We need to get back on track at home because we let our fans down too many times this year and sometimes last year, so we owe it to them to play better at home and we’re going to figure it out.”

10. End of a chapter to the rivalry

With Miami trading Jimmy Butler to the Golden State Warriors, it marks the end to a chapter of a crazy time in the Celtics vs. Heat rivalry.

The Celtics matched up against the Jimmy Butler-led Heat four different times in the playoffs with three of those times coming in the Eastern Conference Finals and the other coming with Butler injured in the first round of last year’s playoffs. The final tally ended in a draw with both teams winning twice against each other but it was Boston that was the only team to win a championship after winning the matchup.

Miami Heat v Boston Celtics - Game Two

There was a different level of anxiety and vitriol when these two teams faced off in the playoffs over the years that has yet to be matched by any other team in the Eastern Conference. You knew you were in for some of the most annoying and grind it out basketball you have ever seen with most of the games coming down to the wire.

Whether it was Jimmy Butler missing the game-winning three in Game 7 of the 2022 Eastern Conference Finals that resulted in the Celtics first Finals appearance since 2008 or the Derrick White buzzer beater in Game 6 of the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals that forced a Game 7 after Boston was dow 0-3 in the series, the matchups with the Miami Heat in the playoffs created some of the greatest moments in recent Celtics history.

Without the Celtics losses in 2020 and 2023, who knows if Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum improve their games to the level they are now. If the Celtics didn’t lose in 2023, who knows if Brad Stevens would have traded Marcus Smart for Kristaps Porzingis and Robert Williams for Jrue Holiday. In a way we should thank Miami for showing the Celtics exactly what their problems as a team were so they would be able to fix them and win the championship in 2024.

So this is goodbye for now Miami, I’m sure you’ll find a way to get another super star player in the future and the rivalry will be renewed once again but it will never reach the heights of the Jimmy Butler era.

Celtics-Heat notebook: Al Horford revealed who changed the game, plus what propelled Jayson Tatum to take over

Boston Celtics v Miami Heat

Inside the Celtics’ 103-85 blowout win over the Heat.

MIAMI — The Celtics extended their road win streak to six games with a 103-85 defeat of the Jimmy Butler-less Miami Heat. With the victory, they’ve won six of their last seven games, and have a 38-16 record (just four games worse than their record at this point last year).

They started the game slow, trailing by 11 points early in the first quarter, but came out swinging in the second and third quarters largely thanks to the strong play of Jayson Tatum (33 points, 8 rebounds).

But this one was a complete team effort, with all five starters scoring in double-figures: Al Horford (16 points, 10 rebounds), Kristaps Porzingis (17 points, 9 rebounds), Derrick White (13 points, 7 assists), Sam Hauser (15 points).

Here’s what stood out from on-the-ground in Miami.

Jayson Tatum goes berserk in the second half after a bad close to the first

Jayson Tatum had a rough first half — he shot just 3-10 from the field and uncharacteristically finished with a team-worst +/- of -7. His performance was capped by what he later described as an “ill-advised three” and some lackluster transition defense that allowed Bam Adebayo to bank in a three at the halftime buzzer.

Joe Mazzulla was visibly exasperated at the play and flung his arms in frustration. Postgame, he explained just how much he values strong closes to the quarter.

Asked Joe Mazzulla about his reaction to Miami’s 7-0 run at the end of the second half:

“That stuff can cost you more than what happens in the fourth quarter, but when you win, no one wants to talk about it… we got away with it today.” pic.twitter.com/cYOBzjzDL1

— Noa Dalzell (@NoaDalzell) February 11, 2025

“That stuff can cost you more than what happens in the fourth quarter, but when you win, no one wants to talk about it… we got away with it today,” Mazzulla said.

The message at halftime was clear.

“He wasn’t happy with us,” said Al Horford.

Tatum took the challenge to heart.

“A lot of that was on me,” he said. “I didn’t have the same imprint in the game I normally do in the first half. It was time for me to wake up.”

So, the Celtics’ statistical leader in just about every category came out of the half on a mission. He exploded for 20 points on 8-11 shooting in the third period, helping the Celtics’ build a 22-point third-quarter lead.

It’s Tatum’s second consecutive game taking over in the third quarter; on Saturday, he scored 19 of his 40 points in a game-sealing third against the Knicks.

But for Mazzulla, the scoring is secondary to his overall play.

“He’s not just being defined by scoring,” Mazzulla said. “He’s defending at a high level, which is really important for us. He has to rebound. He has to play defense for us to be great. He’s doing that... We just need him to continue to play on both ends of the floor.”

Payton Pritchard hugely impacts the Celtics despite limited scoring

In December, Pritchard averaged 12.3 shot attempts per game, while in January, with Kristaps Porzingis back in the lineup, that number was slashed to 8.1 attempts per night.

Entering the Celtics-Heat matchup, Payton Pritchard had just scored 20+ points in back-to-back games for the first time since December.

But, at shootaround Monday, he said he wasn’t too worried about his scoring when asked about the fluctuating shot attempts.

“The blessing of our team is we have so much talent,” Pritchard said. “There’s gonna be times where you just don’t see as many shots, and as long as we’re winning, that’s all that matters.”

“I’m gonna have peaks, and then there should be times I don’t score as much, but hopefully, I’m impacting the game by rebounding and other things,” he added. “I try to hang my hat on that. Everybody knows I’m capable of scoring.”

Just a few hours later, Pritchard perfectly exemplified how much he’s increasingly impacting the game even when shots aren’t falling. Though he made just 2 of 9 field goal attempts, he finished the night with 10 rebounds and 8 assists, both team-highs.

Horford credited the 6’1 guard for turning the game around when he checked in five minutes into the first quarter.

“Payton came in and just changed the game with his pace, how he was finding people,” Horford said. “That was kind of contagious. Once he started doing that, it got all of us going.”

Al Horford relishes the road Celtics fans

Kaseya Center, like most NBA arenas, was filled with Celtics fans. Some reside in South Florida, while others made the trip to see their favorite team in action.

And pregame, Celtics players took the time to sign autographs for fans, as they typically do.

The arena increasingly sounded like a home arena as the Celtics’ lead mounted in the second half. After the final buzzer sounded, Horford locked eyes with many of the Celtics fans who inundated the Kaseya Center and pumped his fist in the direction of a sea of green.

“It’s a privilege when you’re a Celtic and when you go to an opposing arena and you have so many Celtics fans…and that’s how it usually is,” Horford said.

— Noa Dalzell (@NoaDalzell) February 11, 2025

So, the 38-year-old veteran wanted to let the fans know how much he appreciated the support.

“For me, it was just taking a moment to acknowledge them and have that connection,” he said.

Horford gave fans lots to cheer for on Monday; he tallied 16 points and 10 rebounds in the win for his third double-double of the season. He hit 4 of 8 three-pointer attempts, stepping up considerably with Jaylen Brown and Jrue Holiday out of the lineup.

Happy (third) Celtics anniversary to Derrick White!

Derrick White was traded to the Celtics from the Spurs three years ago Monday, and upon reflecting on the trade Monday morning, White acknowledged that he wasn’t happy when he first learned he was being sent out of San Antonio.

“I was pretty upset when I was traded, but looking back, it was probably the best thing that happened to me,” White said.

It might just be one of the best things to have happened to the Celtics, too.

Since the trade took place on Feb. 10, 2022, White has the third-highest +/- in the NBA at +1608. He’s been named to the All-Defense team twice — and was a critical part of the 2024 championship.

This season, White is averaging 16.1 points, 4.2 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.1 blocks.

“Derrick’s just a tremendous player. He does everything really well,” Pritchard said. “Doesn’t really have a weakness. Very good person — fun person to be around. So, as far as the locker room goes, he helps that aspect.”

On the three-year anniversary of Derrick White’s trade to Boston, I asked him how much Joe Mazzulla has impacted him since he arrived:

“He’s believed in me, and he’s always given me the utmost confidence… he’s the best. I got a lot of love for Joe.” pic.twitter.com/LX1L43s7Hy

— Noa Dalzell (@NoaDalzell) February 10, 2025

Mazzulla, who was an assistant coach on the Celtics’ defensive team when the trade was made, recalled how the coaching staff immediately looked at how he could elevate their defensive: “That was the first thing we watched... where he was going to make an impact, and how we were going to use his versatility.”

“He’s one of the smartest players I’ve ever coached,” said the 34-year-old head coach.

Sam Hauser is (physically) feeling better and finding his groove

Hauser hit 5 of 8 three-pointers en route to his third highest-scoring game of the season — 4 of those came in a massive second quarter that helped the Celtics build some separation.

“When you see the first one going in, sometimes the rim looks a little bit bigger after that,” he said postgame.

Hauser was limited by a lower back injury earlier in the season, and it is something he still appears to be tending to on the sidelines.

But, he attributes his improved play of late to “feeling better overall, in general, in terms of my body.”

A fun fact about Hauser is that he’s never shot below 40% in a single season — not in high school, not in college, not in the G-League, and not in the NBA. For a brief moment, Hauser’s remarkable shooting efficiency looked to be at risk, as he shot 35% from three in November. But, after Monday’s performance, Hauser is back up to shooting 39.7% from three on the season, thanks to three consecutive months of shooting above 42%.

We can crunch the numbers, but Hauser’s made clear on numerous occasions he’s not overly scrutinizing them.

“You’re not going to be able to shoot 40% each month, each week, each day,” Hauser said. “So it’s, just sticking to the process.”

Injury housekeeping: Holiday misses another game, Heat acquisitions debut

The Heat’s new players — Kyle Anderson, Davion Mitchell, and Andrew Wiggins — all made their Miami debuts, but combined to shoot just 5-25 from the field. Meanwhile, Heat All-Star Tyler Herro missed the game with a stomach illness.

On the Celtics’ side, Jrue Holiday missed his third consecutive game with a right shoulder and Jaylen Brown sat out with right knee tendinopathy. Torrey Craig, the Celtics’ newest addition, is still nursing an ankle strain. All three players were on the bench for most of the night and actively cheering on the Celtics.

Pregame, Brown went through his signature handshake with each of his Celtics teammates.

NBA All-Star break looming

The Celtics have one more game before the All-Star break — against the new-look Spurs at home on Wednesday. Then, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown will be off to San Antonio, while the rest of the team gets a break.

Even the Celtics’ most competitive players are looking forward to the break.

“I love playing basketball, but I do like a break,” Pritchard said. “It’ll be nice, on the beach, chilling, being with friends and family. So, I’ll take it in. I am a normal kid at the end of the day... go and relax, do normal things, have a good meal, maybe have a drink.”

Pritchard also said the NBA reached out to him about the Three-Point Contest, but that he ultimately declined.

Derrick White celebrates three-year anniversary of trade to Celtics

NBA: Boston Celtics at Miami Heat

The deal for DWhite accelerated the Celtics path to a championship.

MIAMI — Derrick White sported a different haircut, shot nearly four percentage points worse from three and didn’t initially want to leave when he found out the San Antonio Spurs traded him to the Boston Celtics in 2022.

“I saw that this morning. Three years is crazy. It’s been a good three years,” White said.

“Pop called me and came to my room ... I was pretty upset when I got traded, but looking back, it was probably the best thing to happen to me and thankful for where I’m at.”

White later smiled remembering that he and Popovich initially went to separate rooms.

Now, White is a Celtics champion, received a long-term extension with the Celtics and has become a fan favorite who put in one of the great baskets in team history on the floor he stood on reminiscing about his time with the team on Monday. White’s game-winner in Game 6 of the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals forced a Game 7 that nearly allowed Boston to achieve the first 0-3 comeback in NBA history. That loss, and the changes that followed, set in motion White becoming an indispensable Celtics starter.

Offseason alterations to the roster and Marcus Smart and Malcolm Brogdon leaving elevated White above the role that often left him off the floor at the end of games. Now, it’s difficult to imagine him not starting and playing all the key moments for a team that relies heavily on his playmaking.

“I just expected him to do what he’s doing now,” Joe Mazzulla said on Monday. “He’s always been a great player. To me, it was more about having him see that and having him be able to do that alongside ... other really good players, which can be a little bit challenging, at times, coming into this environment. So he’s just gotten better, naturally. He’s one of the smartest players I’ve coached with his ability to think in real time, situationally, what needs to be done.”

“Defensively, that was the first thing we watched was our defensive teach tape and where he was gonna make an impact, how we were gonna use his versatility and then offensively, just growing as a pick-and-roll ball handler, and being able to play against different coverages. Then, he’s a big time shot-maker. So he’s been great.”

His famous put-back, unbelievably, marked his only crunch time shot attempt of the 2023 playoffs.

The deal wasn’t universally beloved at first. CelticsBlog infamously panned it. Boston entered the deadline 31-25, buoyed by a six-game win streak following the team’s maddening .500 start. The cost — Josh Richardson, Romeo Langford, that year’s first-rounder and a pick swap — proved difficult even for Brad Stevens. He accepted, but noted in his press conference after that the distant future swap is what keeps you up at night as an executive.

It marked Stevens’ first big bet on the team with his previous significant trade of Kemba Walker for Al Horford worked amazingly, but was originally conceived as a salary dump. White struggled at first, later acknowledging a difficult acclimation to the Celtics despite his former assistants Ime Udoka and Will Hardy leading the staff at the time.

He finished the season shooting 40.9% from the field and 30.6% from three with the Celtics, then fell to 36.4% FG (31.3% 3PT) in the playoffs. Shooting improvement became mandatory after the Finals loss to the Warriors exposed his offense with a 1-for-10 finish from the field.

“(My game’s) a lot different, obviously,” White said. “Just trying to get better each and every year, and just add little things to my game to try to make me a better player. The organization has done a lot to help me improve and just try to continue to get better with it. (I’ve improved at) shooting, the obvious answer, and then I think I’ve just grown as a person and player as well ... I had moments in San Antonio where I was up-and-down, so I just think more consistency is what I was focusing on, and obviously now, I’m shooting a lot more threes than I probably thought I would ever shoot.”

White vaulted from 31.2% between the Spurs and Celtics in 2022 to 38.1% in his first full season when Mazzulla assumed the head coaching role and Ben Sullivan took over as his shooting coach. He praised his head coach again on Monday, stressing the belief Mazzulla showed in him as crucial to his breakout. That summer, after the conference finals loss, White and his long-time trainer Marcus Mason added more muscle to his frame and reduced the lean on his shooting motion to stabilize his three-point efficiency.

He exploded with a 39.6% season from deep while adding 2.0 more attempts per game, flirted with All-Star status in each of the next two seasons and devastated opponents with 40.4% shooting into the 2024 championship run, all while becoming a perennial All-Defensive Team name. In many ways, White became the Celtics third star, and they’ve missed him when he sits more than any other teammate. Boston is 5-5 without White over the past two seasons outside of their two wins to close last season over resting Charlotte and Washington teams.

There’s some magic to his game, too — the Miami put-back rolling into his hands, his prayer trapped above the break in Saturday’s Knicks game at the end of the clock resulting in three run-stopping free throws and his errant in-bounds on Monday bouncing back to him for a late clock heave three that fell into the net.

Nobody questions the trade anymore after moments like those, and with ring in hand, there’s a chance White becomes a Celtic for life. That he adds levity with trick shot competitions, his baseball glove always nearby and constant banter with Tatum only helps. After Monday’s win, he and Tatum debated the greatest Celtics and Lakers of all time.

“Derrick’s just a tremendous player,” Payton Pritchard said. “Doesn’t really have a weakness. Very good person and fun person to be around. As far as the locker room goes, he helps in that aspect. You can plug him in anywhere, he can play with anybody, he was a very great pickup and obviously Brad did a great job with that trade.”

10 takeaways as Celtics hold off Spurs, head into All-Star break with momentum

NBA: San Antonio Spurs at Boston Celtics

Jayson Tatum set the tone early.

The All-Star break has arrived, and the Celtics appear to be returning to form as they gear up for the second half.

Boston cruised to a 116-103 win over the Spurs on Wednesday and has now won seven of its last eight. Here are 10 takeaways:

1) Jayson Tatum set the tone early.

Tatum, who finished with 32 points, 14 rebounds and 7 assists, came out firing and found a rhythm in the opening minutes. He became the first Celtic in the play-by-play era to have 14 points, six rebounds and three assists in a first quarter and played the game on his terms.

He was essentially in cruise control after that, but it was more than enough. Tatum has scored 30-plus points in three straight games for the first time since late December. This has been one of the better stretches of his career, and he’s taking over games with purpose and panache.

2) Kristaps Porzingis was a perfect sidekick.

Porzingis (29 points) seemed to relish the opportunity to go at Victor Wembanyama. He punished him with a series of fakes in the first quarter and won the matchup decisively.

The Celtics are undefeated when Porzingis scores 25 or more points this season, which feels like enough of a sample size to say it’s not a coincidence.

3) Others stepped up with Jaylen Brown and Jrue Holiday out.

One of the Celtics’ most admirable traits is their ability to keep the operation running smoothly when some of their best players are sidelined.

With Jaylen Brown and Jrue Holiday out, Sam Hauser and Al Horford seamlessly slid into the starting lineup. Their stats weren’t eye-popping, but they both executed their roles at a high level.

Derrick White had 19 points, 9 assists and 7 rebounds. Luke Kornet and Payton Pritchard also contributed, as did newcomer Torrey Craig.

4) Craig looks like an ideal fit.

The Celtics needed a wing who can shoot and defend, and they got one in Craig. Craig is a proven veteran who makes good decisions, helps more than he hurts and fits in well with Boston’s personnel.

Wednesday was a bit of an audition, and he made a strong first impression. Craig hit both of his 3’s to finish with six points and also blocked a shot and added an assist. He didn’t try to do too much, let the game come to him and acted like he had been on the roster for months.

— Boston Celtics (@celtics) February 13, 2025

5) They defended Wembanyama well.

Wembanyama (17 points, 13 rebounds) is inevitably going to score, but the Celtics fared relatively well against him, holding him to 7-of-16 shooting.

He had a couple eye-popping moments, but for the most part, the Celtics neutralized him and made him look like any other player. It was a group effort, but Horford deserves the most credit for holding his ground and pressuring the ball.

Final: Celtics 116, Spurs 103 pic.twitter.com/MGjM8qWuOH

— Celtics Stats (@celtics_stats) February 13, 2025

6) They dominated the glass.

Boston out-rebounded San Antonio, 56-38. Only two Spurs had seven or more boards, while Tatum (14), Horford (10), Pritchard (7), White (7) and Hauser (7) all did their part.

The fact that those three all snagged seven shows a collective buy-in and attention to detail. Rebounding is often largely about effort, and the Celtics displayed plenty of effort Wednesday night.

7) Turnovers were a problem in spurts.

The Celtics played well overall, but turnovers hurt them in stretches.

White had six and Porzingis five, and Boston had 15 as a team. That’s not a brutal number, but it’s a number that could affect a game if a team lets it.

The Celtics managed to not struggle in that area for long periods of time, so it ended up not mattering.

8) They defended the 3 well.

While much is made of the Celtics’ 3-point shooting, 3-point defense can often play as much of a role in determining a game.

The Celtics limited the Spurs to 23.1 percent from distance (9 for 39), including 1 of 11 in the first quarter. Holding a team below 30 percent is often a recipe for success, especially when they hit 18 themselves.

9) They won a home game.

Entering Wednesday, the Celtics had one just three of their last seven games at home, compared to six straight wins on the road.

They managed to shift the trend in the right direction in this one. It was just one game, but the crowd was engaged and energized from the start.

Boston is now 17-10 at home and 22-6 on the road. There’s no logical explanation for it, but their prowess on the road could potentially bode well in an Eastern Conference Finals series against the Cavaliers.

10) They head into the break with momentum.

The first half hasn't been all rosy, but the Celtics are still 39-16 and in excellent shape overall. You know you’re doing something right as a franchise when everyone is disappointed with a record like that.

But, they appear to be making progress and are playing some of their better basketball of the season. The Celtics aren’t going to win every game, and that’s OK, but they’re awfully tough to beat when they play like this.

Joe Mazzulla dives into a relationship with Pep Guardiola, soccer in new podcast interview

Boston Celtics vs San Antonio Spurs

Photo by Matt Stone/MediaNews Group/Boston Herald via Getty Images

The Man City coach has become an idol for Boston’s bench boss.

Joe Mazzulla’s close relationship with Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola has been chronicled multiple times in recent years. But, Mazzulla shared more about his friendship with the renowned soccer coach than ever before in a recent episode of the “Men In Blazers” podcast.

The 34-year-old Celtics head coach revealed that he first reached out to Guardiola a few years back.

“We share a similar beginning,” Mazzulla said on the podcast. “He was coaching Barcelona’s B team; I was in Maine’s G League team. They could have easily gone for a bigger name, but they go to this guy sitting on the back bench with no experience.”

Mazzulla, of course, is referring to the fact that President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens and the Celtics’ front office selected him to be the Celtics’ interim head coach after Ime Udoka was suspended in 2023, despite having far less experience than other potential candidates. Guardiola was picked to be head coach fifteen years ago, replacing then-head coach Frank Rijkaard.

Today, Mazzulla is fresh off his first NBA title with the Celtics. Guardiola’s Manchester City team has won four straight Premier League titles.

Still, as the Celtics look to become the first team to win back-to-back championships since the 2017 Golden State Warriors, Mazzulla is absorbing all he can.

“The biggest thing I wanted to take from him was: What’s it like before you win? What are the challenges that come with winning the first one? And what are you like now that you’ve won,” Mazzulla said.

“He has seen all those steps, and it just gives you great perspective as to: Okay, if you’re gonna do this for a long time, here’s what to expect, here’s how to adapt, and here’s how to look at it.”

Mazzulla said as he’s gotten to know Guardiola over the years, he’s been impressed with his overall skillset.

“He can manage talent, and he can develop talent,” he said. “When you’re taking a look at some of the best coaches of all time, they don’t necessarily have a weakness. They’re able to be great in the multiple areas of coaching.”

Mazzulla also said that in addition to managing his team’s starters, Guardiola has taught him how to better incorporate role players,

“His ability to take other guys and fit them into a role to where they’re just as important as their best players, he has that well-roundedness, and that’s something that I thought that I could really learn from,” he said. “So, I appreciate his humility, and he’s helped me so much in all three of those areas. It’s been a fun journey. He’s helped me so much.”

Joe Mazzulla is drawing from soccer

It’s no secret that Mazzulla draws from other sports when it comes to scheming for basketball games. The Celtics coach has brought up soccer and football on multiple occasions at the podium before and after games, and he’s facilitated games of pickleball, frisbee, flag football, and other sports at Celtics practices this season.

In the interview with Roger Bennett, Mazzulla shared just how he believes the modern NBA has even more parallels to soccer than before.

“One of the things we’re working on now is teams are playing more zone defense in the NBA,” Mazzulla said. “What you see in basketball is the timing of your cuts are always off. And that’s the difference between football and basketball. In basketball, you see a lot of guys cut either before the guy who has the ball sees you, or you do it too late. And so, the timing of your cuts in zone is very similar to the timing of your runs in football to create that space. That’s a huge thing that I’m always looking at.”

“When I look at our roster, I look at a football team, because we have so much talent and ability at every position — how do you maximize that?” Mazzulla continued. “It’s a beautiful way to disperse your talent and make everybody just as important. I think that’s where the real connection comes from.”

All Star break open mailbag - ask me questions (and I’ll try to do better than AI)

San Antonio Spurs v Boston Celtics

Photo by Brian Babineau/NBAE via Getty Images

For fun, I asked Gemini what the top storylines for the Boston Celtics will be for the rest of the regular season. Here’s what it came up with.

The top storylines for the Celtics for the rest of the 2024-25 regular season include:
  • Can the Celtics maintain their strong performance and secure the top seed in the Eastern Conference?
  • Will Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown continue their dominant play and make a strong case for MVP awards?
  • How will the Celtics manage the workload of their key players down the stretch to stay fresh for the playoffs?
  • Can the role players step up and provide consistent support to the star duo?
  • Will the Celtics make any strategic moves before the trade deadline to bolster their roster for a deep playoff run?
  • How will the team adjust to any potential changes in the rotation or playing style?
  • Can the Celtics stay healthy and avoid any significant injuries that could derail their championship aspirations?
These storylines will shape the narrative of the Celtics’ season as they head towards the playoffs with high hopes of contending for the championship.

Booooooring.

Look, I’m all for AI taking over tedious, repetitive tasks that nobody else wants to do. But there are some things that I can’t imagine it doing well enough to replace humans.

I’m pretty sure that you guys can come up with better topics than that. So hit me up with your best mailbag questions in the comments below.

Celtics All-Star Weekend Notebook: Jayson Tatum inspires next generation, Jaylen Brown eyeing new leadership role, JD Davison a Rising Star

74th NBA All-Star Game

Photo by Jesse D. Garrabrant/NBAE via Getty Images

A deeper dive into all things Celtics from NBA All-Star weekend.

SAN FRANCISCO — All-Star weekend was, by and large, a mess. From the strikingly-long intermission that had players wondering if gameplay would ever resume to the lackluster atmosphere at Chase Center, the NBA’s attempt at reviving an event that has long been on the decline fell short by almost every account.

For the Celtics, it was largely a successful weekend. Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum’s All-Star team, dubbed Shaq’s OGs, won the tournament. Brown and Tatum, the team’s two youngest players, looked good in their limited stints; Tatum tallied 25 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1 block across the two mini-games, while Brown recorded 12 points, 2 rebounds, and 1 steal, at one point going on a personal 8-0 run.

— Boston Celtics (@celtics) February 17, 2025

Sunday’s game was the main event, but it was perhaps the least interesting part of a jam-packed weekend of activities, at least from the Celtics perspective.

Here’s what stood out from the weekend of festivities, from on the ground in San Francisco and Oakland.

Jaylen Brown potentially eyeing NBPA presidency

Off the court, All-Star weekend serves as an opportunity for the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) to convene and make leadership decisions. The NBPA is responsible for negotiating the league’s collective bargaining agreements, handling disputes, and advocating for player welfare, among other endeavors.

Brown has been involved with the NBPA throughout his career and has been one of the league’s vice presidents since 2019.

On Sunday, Brown was re-elected by his peers as one of the league’s seven VPs. And, he hinted that he eventually may be headed toward the NBPA presidency — a position that Pelicans guard CJ McCollum currently holds.

“They’re kind of pushing me forward to maybe take the next step and be the official president,” Brown said. “I have a lot of stuff going on, but I enjoy using my platform, learning about the players, hearing from the players, and applying some of our voices to what needs to be changed and what we would like to be changed.”

Asked Jaylen Brown about being re-elected as the VP of the NBPA today:

“They’re kind of pushing me to maybe taken the next step and be the official president.” pic.twitter.com/F2nkHEjztM

— Noa Dalzell (@NoaDalzell) February 17, 2025

Brown said he has found the NBPA experience enriching.

“I’ve learned a lot, been on a lot of phone calls, a lot of Zoom calls, talked a lot of people, spent time with Adam [Silver], built a relationship with everybody on the NBA side,” he said. “We’ll see how the next year or two plays out, but I love serving the players and serving the next generation of players.”

The renewed NBPA leadership role was far from Brown’s only off-court accomplishment this weekend. The 2024 Finals MVP also spent a day in Oakland, where he announced the launch of a new incubator building for Black-owned businesses as part of his new nonprofit, the Oakland XChange. (A deeper dive into this endeavor is coming later this week on SB Nation.)

Jayson Tatum inspiring the next generation of hoopers

Tatum excelled in his 7th All-Star appearance; he recorded 6 points on 3-4 shooting in the first game, and followed that up with a game-high 15 points on 6-7 shooting, including 3-4 from three.

Despite being Team Shaq’s most efficient scorer across the two games, Tatum was probably never destined to win MVP from a panel of voters that disproportionately represented the Bay Area. Steph Curry ultimately garnered 13 of 15 MVP votes, with just one vote going to Tatum.

Of note, Tatum was notably the youngest player on Team Shaq (Tatum is 26 and in contrast, Jalen Brunson, who was on the Young Stars team, is 28). But, Tatum’s placement on the most veteran team makes sense considering his career accolades (NBA championship, two Finals appearances, five Eastern Conference Finals appearances), and the fact that there’s now a younger generation of players who look up to him.

One of those guys is Stephon Castle, the Spurs standout rookie who was selected fourth overall in the 2024 NBA Draft.

Over the summer, Castle wasn't shy about admitting that Tatum was his favorite player in the league, and on Friday, he got the chance to play against him in the All-Star Game (just a few days after playing against him in Boston).

Afterward, Castle gushed about the experience.

Asked Stephon Castle about getting the chance to compete against Jayson Tatum, who he named his favorite player over the summer:

“I’ve been a big fan of JT for a minute now. Just getting to share the court with him is a blessing.” pic.twitter.com/FxLDLt668F

— Noa Dalzell (@NoaDalzell) February 17, 2025

“I’ve been a big fan of JT for a minute now,” Castle said. “Just being able to share the court with him — it’s definitely a blessing.”

Castle fittingly wore Tatum’s signature Nike sneakers during the Rising Stars game, while Washington Wizards rookie Bub Carrington wore Jaylen Brown’s 741 performance shoes. The rookies donning the Celtics stars' shoes reflected the reality that despite Tatum and Brown’s relatively young age, they’re already considered OGs.

JD Davison gets the chance to shine on the big stage

Maine Celtics star JD Davison was invited to participate in the Rising Stars Challenge, which took place on Friday night. The event featured three teams: two teams comprised of the NBA’s best rookies and sophomores, and one made up of a cast of G-League standouts.

Davison, who has averaged 25.1 points and 7.8 assists in his third year as a two-way player for the Maine Celtics, was named a member of the G-League team — which defeated a team filled with elite NBA players like Amen and Ausur Thompson — to advance to Friday night’s final game.

The G-League team ultimately fell short in that one, missing out on the chance to compete on All-Star Sunday night. Davison expressed his disappointment at the fact that his team failed to advance, noting he was particularly excited about the chance to potentially compete against Celtics teammates Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.

The G-League loss tonight means we aren’t going to get to see JD Davison go up against Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum on Sunday

He was excited for the chance to compete against his Celtics teammates:

“I was going at them regardless.” pic.twitter.com/wNs9Wjmrtd

— Noa Dalzell (@NoaDalzell) February 15, 2025

“I was going at them regardless,” Davison said with a smile, shortly after his team fell 25-14 in the championship game.

Davison is on his third (and final) two-way contract with the Celtics and has gotten better and better each year he’s been in the league, pointing to his continuity with the organization as a benefit.

Still, he’s yet to receive an opportunity to play in the big leagues. Davison said that he’s used Payton Pritchard as a resource about how to deal with the mental side of things.

“I pick his brain a lot, talk to him about the ups and downs,” Davison said.

JD Davison said he’s benefitted from the continuity of being on the Maine Celtics for three years — and mentioned that he’s talked a lot to Payton Pritchard this season:

“I pick his brain a lot, talk to him about the ups and downs.” pic.twitter.com/9hIyvaFXUF

— Noa Dalzell (@NoaDalzell) February 15, 2025

The winner of the Rising Stars tournament, a team led by Dalton Knecht, Zach Edey, Stephon Castle, and other young talents, ultimately fell to the OGs in the first game of the All-Star tournament. But, it would have been a lot more fun to see Davison get the chance to battle against Brown and Tatum.

Power rankings: which team is most ready to beat the Celtics?

Several teams were built to challenge the Celtics, but who’s the biggest threat in a seven-game series? Let’s have closer look at the contenders ready to test Boston’s title hopes.

We are now deep into the season, as teams have played more than 60% of their games. With the All-Star break over, this gives us time to look around the NBA and evaluate how the Celtics’ contenders are doing.

We will rank the five most dangerous teams for the championship based on the Celtics’ strengths and weaknesses. For each contender, we’ll give a level of confidence that the Celtics can beat this team in seven games, from 0 to 100.

#1 - Denver Nuggets

The Denver Nuggets might not be the best team out of these five, but they are the best equipped to beat the champs. The Celtics haven’t beaten the Nuggets with Nikola Jokic playing since November 2022 – and he is the main reason the Celtics could be scared to face Denver in the Finals. Jayson Tatum might agree with that.

This offseason, Tatum said that he knew they would win the title once the Nuggets lost to the Wolves – leading us to think the Celtics are aware that the Nuggets are a threat for a championship run. And the reason for that is the three-time MVP. Jokic might be the ultimate weapon to dismantle the Celtics’ defense. The Celtics can’t match him up with Kristaps Porzingis. The Latvian’s size and rim protection aren’t enough to slow him down.

Usually, the Celtics would assign Jayson Tatum or Jrue Holiday to the opponent’s center. This approach allows Porzingis to roam the paint, playing the safety role while JT or Jrue slow down the opponent’s center. However, in most cases, the opponent’s center doesn’t have the same scoring ability as Nikola Jokic. The Serbian big man might be the best scorer in the NBA. Among players with a superstar usage rate, nobody comes close to his efficiency (66% True Shooting).

Like the rest of the league, the Celtics don’t have an answer for the Joker. What about the rest of the team? Well, despite losing an important piece in Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Denver found a way to remain one of the best teams in the league. They are the best team at getting to the rim, thanks to Jokic’s gravity and their cutting game. The Celtics’ off-ball defense has been problematic this season, and a series against the Denver Nuggets could be very challenging.

On the other side, the Denver Nuggets have weaknesses. Their two biggest weaknesses are transition defense and rim protection – which aren’t the Celtics’ biggest strengths. Joe Mazzulla’s team doesn’t put a lot of pressure on the rim and isn’t generating a lot of transition opportunities. Of course, they could adapt, increase their drive volume, and try to force turnovers as much as possible.

Nevertheless, based on the Denver Nuggets’ strengths and weaknesses, I feel that they are the Celtics’ biggest threat. If a series were to start today, my level of confidence in the Celtics in seven against the Nuggets is at 49%.

#2 - Oklahoma City Thunder

The young guys from Oklahoma are taking the league by storm with one of the best regular seasons of all time. The defensive performance from the Thunder this year is incredible. They have the second-best relative defensive rating of all time – beating the legendary 2008 Celtics, for example. Their defense generates so many turnovers and forces opponents to take inefficient shots.

With their aggressive approach, they have found a way to create turnovers every five possessions and are taking away drives and corner shots. This was done with Chet Holmgren missing a lot of games and Isaiah Hartenstein starting the season on the bench. Despite missing their defensive anchor, they maintained an elite level. But with either Isaiah or Chet on the floor, they reach an entirely different level.

While Chet can play a similar role to Porzingis in defense, Isaiah Hartenstein can switch. With these two centers, they can adapt to whatever offensive scheme their opponents are playing. This leads me to think they are equipped to slow down the Celtics’ offense. In their first matchup earlier this season, Isaiah Hartenstein was able to switch onto Jayson Tatum, and he is one of the only centers in the world who can slow him down with the ball in his hands.

Yet, while the Thunder’s defense is impressive, they have an obvious offensive problem: their lack of spacing. As most of us expected, I was convinced they would move to trade for Cam Johnson and add a shooting threat who can play defense to their roster – but they didn’t. With Lu Dort or Alex Caruso on the court, the Thunder are giving the Celtics an easy way to keep Porzingis near the rim – this wouldn’t be possible with Cam Johnson. If they go with Isaiah Joe, Cason Wallace or Aaron Wiggins, they are giving the Celtics an easy target on offense.

As much as the Thunder could slow down the Celtics’ offense, I don’t buy into their offensive firepower overwhelming the green army’s defense. As of right now, my level of confidence in the Celtics in seven against the Thunder is at 60%.

#3 - Cleveland Cavaliers

It wasn’t expected before the season started, but the Cleveland Cavaliers appear to be the biggest threat to the Celtics in the East. The usual rivals during the Jayson & Jaylen era seem a step behind. The 76ers are out of shape, the Bucks are too average, and the Heat were forced to trade Jimmy Butler to California. While the usual Celtics’ nemeses are declining, a new enemy rises: the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Celtics and Cavaliers met in the playoffs last year, and before Donovan Mitchell went down, the Cavaliers looked like a legitimate rival. Despite playing without Jarrett Allen, the Cavaliers were able to put pressure on the Celtics thanks to Donovan Mitchell’s driving game and playmaking.

As CelticsBlog's Mike Shearer noted, the Celtics struggle to contain quick guards who can pull up and drive. With Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland, the Cavs have two players with such skills.

However, the Cavaliers sometimes lack spacing when they play with their two big men, making it easier to contain their backcourt. They sometimes go to a single-big lineup, and when they do, Joe Mazzulla counters with a double-big lineup and wins the possession battle. With Kornet and Horford, for example, the Celtics can dominate on the boards when the Cavaliers decide to go small. When the Cavaliers go big, the Celtics can stretch the floor as much as possible with Porzingis.

The Celtics are equipped to adapt based on the Cavaliers’ game plan, even with De’Andre Hunter’s arrival. Yes, the former Hawk brings more depth on the wing, but this is not where the Cavaliers struggle against the Celtics. While facing Boston, Cleveland struggled because of their backcourt defense. The Celtics love to pick a target and attack Donovan Mitchell or Darius Garland.

Because of that backcourt issue, my level of confidence in the Celtics in seven against the Cavaliers is at 66%.

#4 - Los Angeles Clippers

Yes, the Clippers. The only reason they aren’t higher is that I still have a hard time trusting Kawhi Leonard’s body. Nonetheless, they feel like one of the biggest threats to the Celtics—if they can stay healthy. Despite losing Paul George, the Clippers remained one of the best teams in the West. Like in Moneyball, they replaced PG13 in the aggregate with Kris Dunn, Derrick Jones Jr., and by giving more responsibilities to Norman Powell.

James Harden also turned back the clock and increased his volume following Paul George’s departure. He has lost some of his burst, but his passing and playmaking remain elite. In the middle of all that, Clippers fans also witnessed Ivica Zubac’s All-Defense campaign. The big man has been one of the most—if not the most—important players for the Clippers. Without him, the defense collapses, and the offense struggles to function without his screens and Harden’s playmaking.

That is why they were aggressive on the trade market this winter. They needed a backup for Zubac to keep playing drop coverage—but with Ben Simmons, they can also transform into a switch-everything monster. Add to that Bogdan Bogdanovic’s playmaking off the bench, and you have one of the deepest teams in the West. They can play various defensive and offensive styles while having two of the best isolation players in the league.

In the playoffs, the ability to play two different styles at a high level while having elite isolation scorers is one of the best assets a team can have. Nonetheless, they will face spacing issues, and the isolation-heavy approach might not work all the time. Also, the deeper they go in the playoffs, the easier it will be for opponents to exploit their aging legs. Because of that, my level of confidence in the Celtics beating the Clippers in seven is at 70%.

#5 - New York Knicks

While all the teams mentioned before might have spacing issues, that won’t be the case with the New York Knicks. Around Karl-Anthony Towns, Tom Thibodeau has built an impressive offense with well-timed cuts and various pick-and-roll actions. Jalen Brunson is unstoppable one-on-one, and his incredible scoring ability forces help, which creates even better spacing.

However, this high-powered offense comes at a cost—a defensive one. With KAT at center, the Knicks are unable to contain the Celtics’ offense. They hope Mitchell Robinson will be their savior on that end, but I doubt he will be back and healthy enough to compensate for their defensive struggles. Moreover, if they play Robinson, their spacing disappears.

Despite an elite offense, the Knicks’ defensive shortcomings make me 99% confident the Celtics would beat them in seven.

The other potential threats would have been Dallas with Luka Dončić or the Warriors if they had better spacing around Jimmy and Curry.

What about you? Who do you think could beat the Celtics in seven as of right now?
