Capitals vs. Islanders Game Thread

Amidst all the celebration from last game and the expectations around this one, there is still an actual game to play, and the Caps continue to search for a solid effort – particularly against these teams far lower in the standings, because aside from Thursday’s rematch against the Canes, that’s basically all they’ve got left on the schedule. First on the docket, the first of two against the…

Our Favorite Alex Ovechkin Goals

Alex Ovechkin is now officially the sole keeper of the NHL’s all-time goal-scoring title, having picked up his 895th goal, and if you weren’t sure…that is a lot of goals. Really a lot of goals. So many, in fact, that no one – not even Ovechkin himself – thought he could hit that number even a few years ago. But with Ovechkin, it’s not just about the sheer number of goals he scored.

Alex Ovechkin at 895: Bobbleheads and More

Let me cut to the chase: these are the bobbleheads you’ve been waiting for… and it’s not just bobbleheads: Personally, I’ll be pre-ordering the “Alex Ovechkin Washington Capitals NHL All-Time Goals Leader Celebration Slider Bobblehead,” but there’s all kinds of goodies for y’all to commemorate the moment with. From our friends at FOCO…

Crazy 8s: Some Wild Stats About and Around Alex Ovechkin

895 goals is a massive number. Unfathomably huge. Simply getting to that number, surpassing the greatest offensive talent the league has ever known, and standing alone atop the mountain? That’s a pretty wild, supremely impressive, and absolutely absurd achievement for one Alex Ovechkin. And speaking of absurd, numbers like that can be sliced and diced to pretty comical effect…let’s take a…

Capitals Playoff Positives: Penalty Kill

The Washington Capitals are well on their way to capturing the Metropolitan Division title and the Eastern Conference title, and find themselves in the running for the Presidents’ Trophy. Alex Ovechkin’s Hall of Fame Career(s)

Alex Ovechkin’s historic goal-scoring achievement (you may have heard about it) is the product of two critical and career-defining characteristics of the Great Eight: ability and longevity. Take Ovechkin’s goal-scoring prowess without his durability and consistency and you end up with something like Mike Bossy-plus; take his two decades of nearly uninterrupted availability with a merely “good”…

Capitals vs. Hurricanes Game Thread 4/10

895 achieved, Sunday’s loss in Long Island was a free pass for the team…because honestly, who could focus on playing good team defense when history was just made? Now, however, the focus has to be back on getting ready for the playoffs and finding the next level to their game. They’ll get a good test of their ability to do just that as they resume acquaintances with the Hurricanes…

Two New “895” Bobbleheads

While the Gr8 Chase has come to its dramatic and inevitable conclusion, the merch to celebrate hockey’s new all-time goal-scoring champion has really just begun. We shared some of that the other day, and now our pals at FOCO have dropped a couple of new mini bobbles, featuring the new king on his throne and with a golden stick: The “throne” bobble has the following features…

Capitals vs. Blue Jackets Recap: Caps a No-Show in 7-0 Loss

Did Alex Ovechkin score? If anyone could do it without taking the ice, it would be Ovechkin, but no, he didn’t play today. Plus: After the first period, the Capitals were on a pace to lose this one 9-0, and they didn’t! Mazel tov! Minus: Where to begin…giving up a goal one minute into the game, shoddy goaltending, sloppy puck handling, undisciplined play, and simply phoning in a game…

Capitals vs. Blue Jackets Recap: Columbus Jets to Back-to-Back Wins with 4-1 Victory in DC

Did Alex Ovechkin score? He sure did! Career goal 896 came just 1:10 into the first period, making Jet Greaves the 184th goalie Ovechkin has scored against in his career. Plus: Jet Greaves might have shut out the Capitals yesterday, but he didn’t today! That’s called progress, boys and girls and babes. Minus: The Washington Capitals have now allowed three or more goals in 11 straight…

Capitals-Blue Jackets: How the Game Was Lost

The Washington Capitals and Columbus Blue Jackets met yesterday for the second time in as many days. Saturday’s 7-0 shutout loss in Columbus clearly did not go Washington’s way, but the hope was that they would bounce back in DC yesterday and snag a win in their final home game of the season. Sadly, that was not the case. The Caps had a much better start to their game, but it was all downhill from…

Capitals vs. Islanders Game Thread 4/15

Two games remain in the regular season slate for the Capitals. That’s two games to figure out their lines and return to form before the postseason begins and the games start to matter again. First up, a team that beat them a little over a week ago (but was also on the losing end of a historic moment): the New York Islanders. First, some admin stuff: John Carlson is a game-time…

Capitals-Islanders: How the Game Was Won

After a tough weekend that saw them drop both games of a home-and-home with the Columbus Blue Jackets, the Washington Capitals needed a win on Long Island yesterday. They would have to do it without John Carlson and Jakob Chychrun, who were both out of the lineup for maintenance, and Aliaksei Protas and Logan Thompson are still dealing with injury issues. Clearly someone would need to step up.
