Know your enemy

  • 2-0-2, 6PTS, 1st in the Pacific Division
  • Jack Eichel: 4G-5A-9PTS; Mark Stone: 0G-6A-6PTS; Pavel Dorofeyev: 5G-0A-5PTS
  • Akira Schmid: 2-0-0, 1.80 GAA, .929 save percentage

Game notes

  • After a couple of days off in sunny Nevada, the Bruins begin a three-game road trip tonight by visiting the Pacific-leading Golden Knights.
  • Fresh off of an eight-year, $108-million contract extension, Jack Eichel is off to a flying start for Vegas. The future Bruin (hey, it could still happen) has a whopping nine points in just four games, including four goals.
  • High-profile acquisition Mitch Marner hasn’t scored yet for Vegas, but does have four assists to his name.
  • Similar to Eichel, it’s been a hot start for Vegas winger Pavel Dorofeyev, who has five goals in his team’s first four games. He had a career-best 35 goals and 52 points last season.
  • Former Bruin Jeremy Lauzon landed with Vegas this summer after four seasons in Nashville.
  • The first four games of this season for Vegas have all featured some kind of intrigue or excitement. Their season-opener was a 6-5 shootout loss, followed by back-to-back OT games (one win, one loss). Vegas finally won a regulation game last time out, but that game saw them turn a 2-0 deficit into a 4-2 win.
  • Goalie Adin Hill left that 4-2 win over Calgary with a lower-body injury. Massachusetts native Noah Hanifin has been injured since the season opener as well.
  • For the Bruins, Hampus Lindholm traveled with the team and is questionable for tonight’s game. The Boston Globe guesses it may have been a hamstring injury for Lindholm, which is concerning, but better than something related to his knee injury from last year.

See ya tonight!

Know Your Enemy

  • The Mammoth are 3-2-0, and are 4th in the Central Division; tied with the St. Louis Blues.
  • Nick Schmaltz has once again taken up the mantle of points-getter on the Mammoth, though a recent trip to San Jose juiced that quite a bit. He’s got 7 points in 5 games and leads the team in scoring with 3 goals.
  • Once again the Mammoth place their faith in Karel Vejmelka. He’s largely rewarded them so far, with a .912 SV% and a 3-1-0 record.

Game Preview

I’ve been very interested in this Mammoth team for a minute now. Maybe not in a “adopted western team” way, but more like the way you watch an insect wander around an enclosure.

Last year, they were one of the most impactful teams at 5v5 and yet didn’t make the playoffs, and that has followed them into 2025-26. They are good at getting unblocked shots to the net, and arguably even better at creating quality shots for themselves. Are they perfect? Hell no; they do not attack the middle of the ice almost as a matter of principle at even strength, nearly the entirety of their defense pairings are hot dog water and early returns on their offseason suggest that JJ Peterka will remain the highlight, as just about everybody else they got has been kind of bad. But they’re just good enough in a weird Western Conference that I could see a couple of sell-offs early allowing them to cement their position as 1st wildcard team for a good long while. A lot of what I see here says they probably won’t make it…but part of me wonders if they could.

Meanwhile, Boston got as hard a wakeup call as anyone can give this team in the form of the Colorado Avalanche last night, and the less said about this, the better! What it proved is that while Marco Sturm has definitely figured out a way to get these guys to give a s#!t, this is still very much a work in progress roster construction and against good teams, you can feel the gulf in talent down in your bones. Look no further than a Mikey Eyssimont ending up in the top 6 by some trick of the mind. You can only bring up how your grinders were your best players so often when like 75% of your roster could qualify for that label.

Boston would like to finish up this little western road trip with their dignity intact, so hopefully they can just take a breath, bury the game tape from yesterday out in the salt flats, and move on to winning tonight.

We’ll see you there.

  • Place to Listen: 98.5 The Sports Hub

Know Your Enemy

  • The Avs are 4-0-1 through 5 games, and are 1st in the Central Division
  • Noted Trade target Martin Necas is either making it really tempting, or really hard to trade him, as he currently leads the Avs in points with 9 in 5 games.
  • Nathan MacKinnon is present as per usual as the leading goalscorer for the Avalanche, with 4 in 5 games.
  • The Avs have only ever used Scott Wedgewood in net this year so far, but his .939 SV% in 5 games suggests they aren’t worried about overworking him yet. Which is nuts, because Wedgewood has also seen the second most amount of shots against of any NHL goalie this season so far, at 131. All other players around him are on basement dwellers.

Game Preview

So! That game against Vegas went pretty badly until it didn’t!

Boston is coming to Colorado’s barn to face a team that is quite interesting for the already high standards of Avs fans; some might even call them impossible. They are effectively undefeated in regulation, they routinely drop three or four goals on the competition and only surrender one in return, and are sitting pretty atop the NHL in this early part of the season, with very little indication that they will slow down. Unlike Florida, they haven’t suffered catastrophic injury to their most important players, and unlike Winnipeg, their play isn’t entirely tied to a goaltender remaining the best modern example of his position in the regular season, and instead in an organizational desire to attack the middle of the ice in the offensive zone like it’s their last charge. They’re even up in the top 5 of relevant possession metrics! Most people would refer to this as being in a “good position”.

But the Avs right now are a weird beast. At 5v5, they’re a juggernaut. On both sides of special teams on the other hand? They’ve been pretty ugly. Routinely boxed out of dangerous scoring chances on the man advantage to the point their power play has a worse success rate than Boston’s, and hoping that they can block shots in volume from the high slot on the man-disadvantage which has landed them down in the bottom third of the league in PK success, the Avs seem to be a squad of extremes. It is in those extremes that you can hope to beat them, but it will be a grind just to get there; Dallas is the sole team to beat them this year, and it required surviving a comeback, overtime, and then going the distance to the shootout to finally best them. This is still an extremely good team by all metrics, just a bit of a lopsided one.

If there’s anywhere Boston can take advantage, it’s through those special teams hiccups. Otherwise, they must skate like they’re being chased in order to keep up with the torrid pace of the Avalanche. Anything less and we could have another ugly start like we saw in Vegas.

How will they handle it? Let’s find out together!

The Avs also may wear their Nordiques gear tonight. I’m sure Jacques Perizeau’s half-frozen form in Cocytus has been turned to watch the game on behalf of all Quebecois who voted “remain”.

Sorry about this not going up on time, but it’s here now!

Morning Skate: Zilch

gettyimages-2241790544.jpg

Welcome to a new week, folks!

After a better-than-expected start to the season, I think we can all agree that the Bruins are now back to reality.

The B’s dropped a 3-2 decision to the Utah Mammoth last night in Salt Lake City, bringing an end to a fruitless road trip, with the Bruins losing all three games in regulation.

You could live with the Vegas game, as it was a pretty wild affair and the Bruins hung in there. You can also look at the Colorado game as the Bruins simply being outclassed by a far superior opponent.

But last night’s game was a frustrating one, as it was very much there for the taking.

If the Bruins come out of that game with two points, you don’t feel that bad about the mini road trip for the reasons stated above; instead, the B’s limp home with far more questions than when they headed out west.

Head coach Marco Sturm continues to tinker with his lineup, wielding the healthy scratch as a motivational tool and even benching his best player for half of a period.

The team remains a work in progress, so most of us are expecting more frustrating games to come as we learn what this group is really made of.

Looming on the schedule: the return of Brad Marchand, who will be back at TD Garden with the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night.

I feel like there’s no question about whether or not Marchand will get a warm reception, but I’m sure some talk radio pundit will try to make it an issue (or maybe not, because the Patriots might be good again).

That game with the Panthers is the first of a three-game homestand for the Bruins, who will welcome Anaheim on Thursday night before a matinée against Colorado on Saturday.

What’s on tap for today?

  • Sergei Bobrovsky: 3-2-0, 2.02 GAA, .917 save percentage

Game notes

  • Brad Marchand is back! The longtime Bruin is returning for the first time since being traded last spring in what is sure to be a charged atmosphere at TD Garden.
  • With names like Matthew Tkachuk and Aleksander Barkov on the shelf, Marchand is actually Florida’s leading scorer on the young season.
  • One last Marchand item: for the nostalgic among us, Marchand reported that he had dinner with Zdeno Chara, Adam McQuaid, Patrice Bergeron, and Tuukka Rask on Sunday night. We are old.
  • In an odd turn of events, both teams are coming into tonight’s game as losers of four games in a row. The Panthers were shutout by the Buffalo Sabres 3-0 last time out. Given each team’s current run of form, this could be the first NHL game where neither team earns a point. HISTORY!
  • To make it even MORE odd, both teams also won their first three games of this season.
  • Florida has struggled to score goals early in the season, averaging just 2.14 goals per game; that figure is good for 30th in the NHL. Sam Bennett, a force for Florida in last season’s playoffs, has just one goal to his name thus far.
  • While it certainly doesn’t mean a ton in the grand scheme of things, I was surprised to see that the Bruins currently own the league’s third-best face-off percentage at 55.9%.
  • Hampus Lindholm missed Sunday’s game as part of the team’s efforts to manage his return from injury, so he’s likely to draw back in tonight.

Public Skate: Bruins vs. Panthers

gettyimages-2204027988.jpg

Welcome to hockey night, folks!

Hopefully you’ve had yourself a decent Tuesday thus far.

It’s probably fair to say that tonight’s game is one of the more eagerly anticipated regular season games in recent memory, with Brad Marchand returning as an opponent for the first time.

(Technically, he played at TD Garden as a non-Bruin for the Four Nations Face-Off, but that doesn’t really count.)

These are two teams who have had uneven starts to the season, both winners of their first three and losers of their last four.

Hey. somebody has to win, right?

As a reminder, tonight’s game will be broadcast on national TV on ESPN.

Discuss.

Recap: Wacky bounce sinks B’s as Panthers win, 4-3

gettyimages-2242473271.jpg

There are frustrating ways to lose a hockey game, and then there’s whatever ended up happening at TD Garden tonight.

After erasing a 2-0 deficit and then scoring with the goalie pulled to tie the game 3-3, Carter Verhaeghe’s shot hit the post, flew out near the circle, hit Andrew Peeke, and went in the net to win the game for Florida with 26 seconds left.

Don’t bother trying to read that again, just scroll down and watch the highlight. It was as weird as it sounds.

The loss was the fifth in a row for the Bruins, while Florida ended a four-game losing streak of their own with the win.

The return of Brad Marchand was the big story heading into the game, and he earned his video tribute by recording two assists.

Mackie Samoskevich got the scoring started with a power play goal just a minute into the game, making it 1-0 Panthers.

View Link

AJ Greer pounced on a loose puck and beat Jeremy Swayman two minutes into the second period to make it 2-0 Panthers.

View Link

After killing two consecutive penalties late in the second and early in the third, the Bruins got on the board 2:46 into the final period with Pavel Zacha finishing off a nice passing play to make it 2-1 Panthers.

View Link

Elias Lindholm would cash in on the power play just two minutes later to make it a 2-2 game.

View Link

Eetu Luostarinen would put the Panthers back on top with a nice finish just five minutes later, making it 3-2 Panthers.

View Link

To their credit, the Bruins didn’t go away, and they were rewarded: Morgan Geekie scored from the top of the crease to make it a 3-3 game with 1:31 left.

And then…sometimes all you can do is laugh, right? It’s going to be a long season.

— B/R Open Ice (@BR_OpenIce) October 22, 2025

Bruins LOSE! 4-3 final as Florida ends their losing streak.

Game notes

  • I mean…what can you say about that finish? After a spirited third period that saw the Bruins come back twice, to lose on an off-the-post-off-your-own-defenseman-and-in goal is best summed up as a kick in the nuts.
  • I like to think that it wasn’t a technical glitch, but was instead the TD Garden timekeeper up to shenanigans in making the clock read 2:60 after Florida’s game-winning goal. “I don’t know, it’s broken,” didn’t quite work, but it was an admirable effort.
  • In case you missed it, the Bruins obviously played a Brad Marchand video tribute, and it turned into a pretty emotional moment for the man himself.
  • Speaking of Marchand, he had two assists tonight. Per the ESPN broadcast, it was his 135th multipoint game at TD Garden, the most of any player.
  • While the Bruins did end up scoring with the man advantage in the third period, they left plenty of momentum-changing chances on the board by going just 1-for-5 on the power play.
  • He was ultimately doomed by a ridiculous bounce and some defensive miscues, but Jeremy Swayman played a decent game for the Bruins, making a couple of big stops to keep the B’s in it while 2-0 down.
  • Casey Mittelstadt had a bounce-back game for the Bruins, recording two assists after being a healthy scratch against Utah on Sunday.
  • The Czech lads also had two-point nights for the B’s: 1G-1A for Zacha, 0G-2A for David Pastrnak.
  • It was a tough night at the office for Mason Lohrei, who got beaten to a loose puck on the Greer goal and got burnt by Luostrarinen on his goal. Shortly after the latter, ESPN displayed a “WORST PLUS-MINUS IN THE LEAGUE LAST SEASON” graphic on the screen, so…yeah.
  • File under “Making the Most of Your Opportunity:” Greer, a former Bruin who did not receive a video tribute, took one shot in just 5:50 of ice time. He scored on that shot.
  • Fraser Minten skated just 7:07 for the Bruins, lowest on the team by about two full minutes.
  • In a scheduling quirk, Marchand and the Panthers won’t return to TD Garden again this season, as the next two match-ups between these teams will take place in Florida.

Decent effort, good determination to get back in the game, but ultimately not enough. It’s a little long, but that might end up being the 2025-2026 slogan.

The B’s will look to avoid losing a half-dozen in a row when Anaheim comes to town on Thursday. They may need some help on the blue line for that game as well.

(It sounds worse when you say “half-dozen in a row,” doesn’t it? My bad.)

Preview: Bruins look to snap 5-game losing streak against Ducks

Game notes

Can the Bruins snap a five-game losing streak? We’re not QUITE at the longest losing streak from last season, but snapping it before it gets there will be the goal tonight as the Anaheim Ducks roll into town.

Things looked like they were turning around on Tuesday in the third period as the Bruins rallied to tie the game twice in the frame, but a fluky goal with 25.7 seconds was the writing on the wall.

But if there was a silver lining, it was production from the top six forwards, particularly the second line when needed. Now let’s see if that will carry over.

We’ll also see if Casey Mittelstadt continues to be fueled by being a healthy scratch earlier. Mittelstadt had an impactful game on Tuesday, with the primary assists on two of the three Bruins’ goals in the third, including a tying one.

The Ducks, on the other hand, are coming off a 5-2 win over the Nashville Predators on Tuesday. This is the middle game of a five-game road trip for Anaheim.

The Bruins are going through defensemen to replace Hampus Lindholm right now. The B’s recalled Michael Callahan yesterday after putting Jordan Harris on injured reserve. Harris’ TOI was 15:20 against the Florida Panthers on Tuesday. WEEI’s Scott McLaughlin reported Harris was seen walking with a limp after the game.

The Bruins’ power play stats are beginning to look similar to last year’s — 16.7%. Ducks are at 20% having played two fewer games than the Bruins so far to start the season.

Recap: Bruins drop to Ducks, 7-5, despite third-period rally

gettyimages-2242891236.jpg

The Boston Bruins were served their sixth-straight loss by the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday night at the TD Garden, as the 7-5 loss was the product of poor game management when the game was on the line.

Despite recovering from a two-goal deficit to start the third period to make it a 5-5 game, the Bruins gave up what would become the game winner just 30 seconds after their equalizer. The Ducks then sealed their win with an empty-net goal.

“Those breakdowns in big moments, that can’t happen,” Head Coach Marco Sturm said after the loss. “Or losing battles in our own end, that can’t happen.”

Here are the game’s highlights:

First period:

Casey Mittelstadt got the Bruins on the board early, following up on a rebound at the far side off Pavel Zacha’s initial shot for his third of the season. 1-0 Bruins.

View Link

Drew Helleson evened the game when he skated down to the low left-wing circle and his shot bounced off Charlie McAvoy’s skate and into the net. 1-1 game.

View Link

Second period:

David Pastrnak set up Morgan Geekie in the high slot where he put a wrist shot past Petr Mrazek to take the lead. 2-1 Bruins.

View Link

After a chance by Fraser Minten to extend the lead, the Ducks quickly tied the game after Jackson LaCombe found Cutter Gauthier skating into the high slot to get the equalizer past Joonas Korpisalo. 2-2 game.

View Link

The Ducks then took the lead minutes later when the rebound from Nikita Nesterenko’s shot came out to Jacob Trouba low in the right-wing circle for a quick snap shot under Korpisalo’s glove. 3-2 Ducks.

View Link

But the Bruins evened things up on the power play as Henri Jokiharju sent a pass to Mason Lohrei at the left point for a quick-release snap shot past Mrazek’s left skate. 3-3 game.

View Link

Third period:

Early in the period, Troy Terry dangled not once, but twice before connecting with Mikael Granlund for the go-ahead goal. 4-3 Ducks.

View Link

The Ducks cushioned their lead when Sam Colangelo found a bouncy puck out front and got his shot up high past Korpisalo. 5-3 Ducks.

View Link

Things LOOKED like they were about to take a turn after Charlie McAvoy slid a pass to David Pastrnak who effortlessly sent a wrist shot under the crossbar and netted a power-play goal to close the scoring gap and make it a 5-4 game.

View Link

And THEN 25 seconds later Geekie gets his second of the night to tie the game on a backhanded feed from Nikita Zadorov. 5-5 game.

View Link

But just as fast as the Bruins made a comeback, the Ducks regained the lead 30 seconds later with a net-front goal by Terry. 6-5 Ducks.

View Link

Granlund potted an empty netter to make the final score: 7-5 Ducks.

View Link

Game notes

“Embarrassing” seemed to be a common word thrown around the locker room postgame, uttered from Sturm, Geekie and Korpisalo following the loss.

As the Bruins showed for the second straight game, they do have it in them to battle back after falling behind. But their game management has been a downfall to start this year and here they are on a six-game losing streak as mistakes begin to pile up lost points.

The Bruins, believe it or not, did start on time, scoring quickly and getting 18 shots on net. And a shoot-first mentality continued in the second where they spent a majority of the frame’s first half on the offensive. They even outshot the Ducks 32 to 18 through 40 minutes. But then the second period was laced with defensive problems and breakdowns and showed the Bruins continue to struggle on the backend when pressed. Sturm said postgame the B’s “kicked themselves” with some “bad shifts” despite a really good start.

Postgame soundbites: “When your under pressure, that’s where we struggled the most,” Strum said about the Ducks’ winning goal and if the team is having difficulties grasping the Bruins’ system. “Are we an elite team in this league? Probably not.”

Sturm said it’s challenging when the team was dialed in to start the year and now find themselves in a funk that they need to dig themselves out of.

Nesterenko picked up four assists on Anaheim’s end, a career-high in points for him. Granlund also had a career-high night registering five points.

There are always some silver linings, like the Bruins coming away with two power-play goals on both of their man-advantages and Geekie’s two-goal night. And while short-lived, the third-period comeback did breathe some life into the TD Garden.

The Bruins will face the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the TD Garden.

Surely that will help reset the vibes. Thank you, Carl.

Anyways, the Bruins are back in action today, hosting the West-leading (as of Friday evening) Colorado Avalanche.

Does the losing streak reach seven? Is today the day for a W? TIME WILL TELL.

I think the Bruins somehow win today, but don’t call me out when I come back and edit this sentence out later.

Recap: Bruins end skid with 3-2 win over Avalanche

imagn-27418110.jpg

With a half-dozen consecutive losses in their back pocket and the Colorado Avalanche coming to town, you could forgive Bruins fans for having low expectations for this afternoon’s game.

Instead, the Bruins got a stellar performance from Jeremy Swayman, a better team-wide effort, and a bit of luck to go their way in what ended up a 3-2 regulation win over the Avalanche.

Swayman made 31 saves in the win, while his teammates blocked 34 shots in front of him, giving you a decent idea of which team controlled possession.

The Bruins got two goals in under a minute during the second period, with Viktor Arvidsson breaking his drought first and Mikey Eyssimont cashing in next.

Morgan Geekie scored what would stand up as the game-winning goal late in the second period.

To the highlights!

Colorado got the scoring started early in the first period when Artturi Lehkonen found himself in approximately 42 square miles of open space and buried a great pass from Nathan MacKinnon to make it 1-0 Avalanche.

View Link

Arvidsson would get his first around ten minutes later, showing a great willingness to stick with the play before eventually banking the puck in off of Scott Wedgewood, making it a 1-1 game.

View Link

Speaking of nice passing plays, Eyssimont had himself a tap-in after a great pass from Tanner Jeannot, making it 2-1 Bruins.

View Link

Geekie’s goal would prove to be the big one for the B’s, as he showed some hustle and caught Wedgewood napping to make it 3-1 Bruins with just five seconds left in the second period.

View Link

Lehkonen would get his second on a beautiful net-front tip with 20 seconds left in the third, making it 3-2 Bruins — but that was as close as they got.

The Bruins managed to kill the rest of the clock, got in a nice post-whistle scrum, and skated off the TD Garden ice with their first win in close to two weeks.

Game notes

  • Sometimes you just need a bounce or two or five to go your way, right? The Arvidsson goal came off of a flubbed Mason Lohrei shot, then was banked in. The Geekie required a brain fart and a bit of luck. Hey, you’ll certainly take it, but those were the kinds of bounces that weren’t going the B’s way during their losing streak.
  • It’d be a bit of an exaggeration to say Swayman stole this game, but he was excellent throughout and was a major reason the Bruins earned two points.
  • If we point out the bad games, we also have to point out the good: Lohrei assisted on all three Bruins goals today.

The Bruins will be off on Sunday, aside from traveling to Ottawa. Enjoy the weekend!

Preview: Colorado comes to town for a matinée affair

Just the facts

  • Scott Wedgewood: 5-0-2, 2.33 GAA, .910 save percentage

Game notes

  • Ah yes, just what you want to see when you’ve lost six games in a row: a team that has yet to lose in regulation coming to town. This should be fun!
  • As you undoubtedly remember, these two teams played one another one week ago today, a 4-1 Avalanche win in Denver. On the heels of a wild game in Vegas, that one was a more thorough defeat, and things have gone steadily downhill since then.
  • Oddly enough, the Avalanche, like the Bruins, haven’t won a game since that match-up on October 18. They’ve lost two in a row, both beyond regulation: 5-4 to the Hurricanes in a shootout on Thursday, and 4-3 to the Mammoth in OT on Tuesday.
  • That game against Carolina featured a double-throwback night with the Avs wearing Nordiques jerseys and the Hurricanes wearing Whalers jerseys. Obviously decades have passed since the moves, but it still feels like a kick in the nuts for Nordiques and Whalers folks whenever those jerseys come out.
  • While the Bruins have put up plenty of goals in recent games, they’ll have a tougher task doing so today: Colorado allows the second-fewest GA/G in the league at 2.13.
  • You’d assume any and all lineup changes are on the table when you’re staring down losing seven games (almost 10% of the season!) in a row, so we’ll see what Marco Sturm has on his mind today.
  • The refrain of “hey, at least they made it interesting” has obviously gotten old at this point, with the Bruins needing a result sooner rather than later to prevent this from turning into a complete gong show. It’s a tall order to ask for that result against a Stanley Cup contender, but stranger things have happened — like that game-loser against Florida. STAY POSITIVE.
  • Also, is it really a matinée game if it’s at 3 PM? Or does it need to be a 12 PM or 1 PM to be a true matinée? It’s technically in the afternoon, but 3 PM feels dangerously close to the evening, especially in the fall.
  • Something tells me we’ll have a lot of time to have more arguments like the one immediately above this as the season progresses. Buckle up!

See ya this afternoon!

  • Shane Pinto: 8G-1A-9PTS; Dylan Cozens: 6G-3A-9PTS; Drake Batherson: 2G-5A-7PTS
  • Linus Ullmark: 4-3-1, 3.11 GAA, .870 save percentage

Game notes

  • Fresh off of winning one in a row (leave me alone, it’s a thing), the Bruins return to Atlantic Division action with a visit to the Ottawa Senators.
  • Ottawa has won two in a row, the latest a 7-1 pounding of the Washington Capitals on Saturday night. That game featured Linus Ullmark doing Linus Ullmark things.
  • The Senators have been without captain Brady Tkachuk since the third game of the season, as he suffered a thumb injury that required surgery.
  • Ottawa has a nice selection of “he’s still playing?” guys, including David Perron and Lars Eller.
  • The Bruins will be without Hampus Lindholm, who was placed on injured reserve on Sunday (retroactive to October 9). Jonathan Aspirot was recalled from Providence and should be available tonight.
  • Tonight’s game will be an interesting face-off battle, as the Senators have the league’s best win percentage (59.8%) and the Bruins have the second best (56.2%).
  • While the B’s aren’t exactly airtight when it comes to goals against, the Senators are actually worse: they’re 29th in the league in GA/G, allowing 3.89 goals per game. That figure includes a whopping eight goals allowed to the Buffalo Sabres two weeks ago.
  • On the other side of the ice, Ottawa has a very potent power play, converting on 28.1% of their opportunities (sixth-best in the NHL).
  • Fun fact: tonight’s two head coaches, Travis Green and Marco Sturm, were teammates on the 2005-2006 Bruins! I’m sure this isn’t the first time it’s happened, but it’s kind of cool. What a terrible season that was, eh?

See ya tonight!

Recap: Bruins top Islanders, 5-2, in comeback win

gettyimages-2243431163.jpg

The Boston Bruins recovered after a lackluster first period to change the game’s momentum and rallied to beat the New York Islanders, 5-2, at the TD Garden Tuesday night.

The comeback win saw the Bruins score five unanswered goals, net two power-play goals, kill off timely penalties and a solid performance of 33 saves from Joonas Korpisalo.

With the win, the Bruins are now 5-7-0 and 2-1-0 in their last three games.

Here are the highlights:

First period:

Things did not get off to a great start for the Bruins who allowed two goals on three shots in the first five minutes of the game.

First, Jonathan Drouin sent a pass back to Bo Horvat at the top of the right-wing circle where he let a quick snap shot fly past Joonas Korpisalo’s stick just over a minute into the game. 1-0 Islanders.

Then at 4:52 on a delayed penalty, Mathew Barzal at the low left-wing circle fed a pass to Kyle Palmieri low in the opposite circle and unattended, he put a snap shot past Korpisalo. 2-0 Islanders.

Second period:

Pavel Zacha found Elias Lindholm in the right-wing circle for a one-timer on the power play to cut into the Bruins’ deficit at 3:57 of the second period. 2-1 game.

View Link

Hampus Lindholm had Sorokin thinking he was going to shoot as he sent a hard pass to David Pastrnak who lifted a wrist shot past Sorokin. 2-2 game.

59 seconds later, Michael Eyssimont tipped in Charlie McAvoy’s shot to give the Bruins the lead. 3-2 Bruins.

Third period:

Charlie McAvoy hit Morgan Geekie with a pass which he one-timed over Sorokin’s stick for the Bruins’ second power-play goal of the night. 4-2 Bruins.

Fraser Minten later scored an empty-net goal to cement the win. Final score: 5-2 Bruins.

Game notes

  • The Bruins needed that win after yesterday’s blowout loss. It was not perfect, especially with the first period play, but the Bruins were able to respond after not liking how things were going.
  • The first period was not the right response to start the game. No one was skating and sloppiness in the neutral zone led to defensive zone breakdowns. Palmieri was literally unattended on his goal as it seemed everyone just watched the pass hit his stick and didn’t even react.
  • BUT the next 40 minutes was a different story.
  • “Was it the start we wanted? No, but I felt good for some reason because the guys were dialed in and I could sense that,” Head Coach Marco Sturm said postgame. He said he felt while the Islanders were faster in the first period, he still thought his team gave them all they had. He compared it to the “script” of the win over the Colorado Avalanche this past weekend. “We just saw that script. We had just been through it with Colorado. We stuck with it in the second period,” Sturm said.
  • H. Lindholm’s four-minute highsticking penalty had the making of undoing all the good accomplished in the second period. About 2:50 left in the period, beginning the third on the PK as long as nothing fell apart. And then the Bruins kill off another penalty right after it. Good stuff.
  • Special teams were a huge factor in the win. The Bruins killed off all five penalties and capitalized on 2 of 4 power plays.
  • Morgan Geekie is now on a five-game goal streak. He’s tied for “2nd” right now in the league for most goals as he’s one of six players with eight goals so far.
  • H. Lindholm, activated today from injured reserve, drew back into the lineup and contributed right away. He was on ice for 19:03. He said postgame that his injury is behind him. “When I’m out there I go full,” Lindholm said about not having a “second gear” when it comes to his approach returning from injury.
  • E. Lindholm, Pastrnak and Eyssimont each ended the night with a goal and an assist. Charlie McAvoy also had a two-point night with two assists.
  • Korpisalo had a strong game after allowing those two fast goals. In five starts, tonight’s win was his best of the season with a .943 save percentage.
  • Jonathan Aspirot made his NHL debut tonight.
  • The Bruins will face the Buffalo Sabres at 7 p.m. Thursday at the TD Garden.

  • Alex Lyon: 3-4-1, 2.77 GAA, .919 save percentage

Game notes

  • After a decent comeback win over the New York Islanders on Tuesday, the Bruins will look to keep the good vibes going as they host the Buffalo Sabres. The B’s won the first match-up of the season between these two teams, a 3-1 decision back on October 11.
  • After three consecutive losses to start the season (and by a combined 10-2 margin at that), the Sabres have shown signs of life lately. They’ve lost two in a row, but both were in overtime. Those two games were preceded by two wins in a row, so they’re riding a four-game point streak.
  • The Sabres may get center Jordan Greenway back tonight, after he missed the entirety of training camp following summer surgery. Greenway played his college hockey at Boston University.
  • Tonight’s game is a match-up between teams at opposite ends of the face-off spectrum: Buffalo is the worst in the league at 41.9%, while the Bruins are now second-best at 54.9%.
  • Buffalo boasts the league’s best penalty kill at 91.2%.
  • Morgan Geekie has been on a heater for the Bruins lately, with six goals in his last five games. That’s more than any other Bruin not named David Pastrnak has on the season.
  • With Hampus Lindholm returning from injury and Jonathan Aspirot making his NHL debut, Mason Lohrei was a healthy scratch against the Islanders. While he’ll likely draw back in sooner rather than later, there’s little reason for Marco Sturm to make many changes to the lineup after a 5-2 win.

See ya tonight!

Recap: Bruins make it two in a row with OT win over Buffalo

gettyimages-2244249919.jpg

It wasn’t a perfect night at TD Garden on Thursday, as the Bruins let two different two-goal leads slip away against the Sabres.

However, they managed to recover in time to skate off the ice with a 4-3 win, thanks to Marat Khusnutdinov’s game-winning goal 2:07 into overtime.

The win was the second in a row for the Bruins, who beat the Islanders at TD Garden on Tuesday night.

The B’s got goals from four different skaters in this one, with Khusnutdinov joined by Morgan Geekie, David Pastrnak, and Mark Kastelic.

Joonas Korpisalo made 37 saves in the win.

Geekie got things started for the Bruins at the tail end of a power play midway through the first period, making it 1-0 Bruins.

Pastrnak would do it all by himself to get the Bruins another goal, stealing the puck in his own zone before finishing it at the other end to make it 2-0 Bruins just two minutes after Geekie’s goal.

View Link

Rasmus Dahlia got Buffalo on the board with a power play goal late in the second period, a drive through traffic that made it 2-1 Bruins.

View Link

Kastelic restored the B’s two-goal lead with a nice second-effort goal with just 21 seconds left in the second period, making it 3-1 Bruins.

View Link

Josh Dean cut the lead to one seven minutes into the third period with a great bit of hand-eye coordination, making it 3-2 Bruins.

View Link

Seven minutes later, Alex Tuch made it a 3-3 game with nice shot from the slot to beat Korpisalo.

View Link

After the B’s failed to cash in on a brief power play to start overtime, Khusnutdinov sent everyone home happy with the OT winner.

Bruins win, 4-3.

Game notes

  • The Bruins were outshot by a 13-5 margin in the first period, yet came out of it leading 2-0.
  • Pastrnak is rapidly approaching a milestone, as tonight’s goal was the 398th of his NHL career.
  • Geekie has now scored in six games in a row, with tonight’s goal being his 9th on the young season. While it’s fair to point out his elevated shooting percentage, it’s also fair look at the quality of goals he’s scored recently (tonight being a prime example) and just tip your cap.
  • Marco Sturm challenged Tuch’s game-tying goal for goalie interference, but the NHL deemed it a legal play. The B’s were penalized for the unsuccessful challenge, and ended up with a big PK inside the last five minutes of the third period.
  • Elias Lindholm left tonight’s game in the second period after a collision with Jordan Greenway. He received some assistance getting off the ice and didn’t return, with the team calling it a lower-body injury. Per Ty Anderson, the team isn’t fearing a long-term injury at this time.
  • Several Bruins took exception to Greenway’s “accidentally on purpose” collision with Lindholm, which pleased Sturm.
  • Khusnutdinov’s goal, which came with Fraser Minten on the odd-man rush with him, looked remarkably similar to Minten’s own OT goal against Chicago earlier this season. I’m not drawing any conclusions from that, it just seemed cool to point out.
  • While they ultimately lost the game, Sabres fans will likely be pleased with the team’s ability to overcome multiple two-goal deficits. Plus, they got a point, extending their point streak to five games.
  • In the “Sometimes Luck Is On Your Side” file: on another night, harkening back to that wacky loss to Florida, it would have been someone on the Bruins blowing a tire in OT. Instead, it was Rasmus Dahlin who lost an edge in the Boston zone and turned the puck over, which rarely goes well in 3-on-3 play.

The Bruins will host the Carolina Hurricanes at TD Garden at 1 PM on Saturday afternoon before heading to Long Island, home of outstanding bagels, to face the Islanders on Tuesday night.

After that, the B’s will play a weird chunk of home-and-homes with the Ontario duo of the Maple Leafs and Senators.

Public Skate: Bruins vs. Sabres

gettyimages-2240112693.jpg

Thursday night hockey is upon us, folks!

After scoring five unanswered goals to beat the Islanders on Tuesday, the Bruins will hope to build on (some parts) of that performance tonight against the Sabres.

While Buffalo remains far from a juggernaut, they’ve played better hockey of late, especially when compared to the early days of the season.

This should be a good test to see if the Bruins can iron out some bad habits ahead of a visit from the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday afternoon.

Bruins! Sabres!

Discuss.
