Welcome to Thursday Night Hockey!

Catch the fever — it’s another game between…oh no, the Bruins and the Flames?!?! NOT AGAIN!

Anyways, here’s to hoping we see more entertainment and less slop than we saw in Calgary. One can dream, right?

Bruins! Flames!

Just the facts

  • When: Tonight, 7 PM
  • Where: TD Garden – Boston, MA
  • How to follow: NESN, 98.5 The Sports Hub
  • Opposing perspective: Flames Nation

Know your enemy

  • 18-20-4, 40PTS, 7th in the Pacific Division
  • Nazem Kadri: 8G-24A-32PTS; Rasmus Andersson: 9G-18A-27PTS; Mikael Backlund: 10G-16A-26PTS
  • Dustin Wolf: 14-16-2, 2.90 GAA, .900 save percentage

Note: The figures above were taken prior to Calgary’s Wednesday night game in Montreal.

Game notes

  • After a so-so trip out west, the Bruins return to TD Garden for a five-game homestand, starting with tonight’s date with Calgary.
  • The Flames played in Montreal on Wednesday night, a 4-1 loss. Needless to say, the Bruins should be a bit more rested than their guests tonight.
  • These two teams played a little more than a week ago, a 2-1 OT win for Calgary that many of you fine commenters considered one of the worst hockey games in recent memory. Here’s to hoping, for all of our sake, that tonight is more entertaining.
  • That game was sandwiched between two other wins for Calgary, which came during a decent stretch that saw them win five of six games and reignite hopes of a wild card push. Since then, they’ve lost three in a row and find themselves six points out of a playoff spot (and with five teams ahead of them).
  • While the Bruins need to stop shooting themselves in the collective foot with all of the penalties, they’ll be facing the league’s worst power play tonight (14.2%), so…hopefully it won’t be as bad as Tuesday in Seattle, when the B’s allowed three PPGs.
  • Dustin Wolf started Wednesday’s game for Calgary, meaning we’ll likely see Devin Cooley tonight.
  • No real roster news from a Bruins perspective, as things are pretty much the same from Tuesday night in Seattle. I’m guessing Joonas Korpisalo will start.

See ya tonight!

Morning Skate: Heat

gettyimages-2254696207.jpg

Happy Friday, folks! Here’s to hoping you have a good day heading into a good weekend.

The Bruins did their part to boost your mood last night, beating the Calgary Flames 4-1 at TD Garden.

The B’s got goals from four different players: Mason Lohrei, Sean Kuraly, Elias Lindholm, and Casey Mittelstadt.

Joonas Korpisalo played well in his return to the net, making 28 saves.

Overall, it was a tidy game from the B’s, who jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Connor Zary made it 4-1 late in the second period.

Encouragingly, the Bruins managed to score four goals, all at even strength, without one from David Pastrnak or Morgan Geekie. Depth contributions, etc.

To put something else in the “encouraging” column, the Bruins managed to allow just two Calgary power play opportunities, a marked improvement from the chaos in Seattle.

THINGS ARE TRENDING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION, FOLKS.

Next up for the Bruins will be a date with the New York Rangers, who will visit TD Garden for a matinée game at 1 PM on Saturday.

That game will be broadcast nationally on ABC, which could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on how you feel about the league’s national broadcasts.

Opinions seem to vary wildly on that topic, but hey, at least it’s easier to watch on ABC than on NESN (for most people, anyways).

Elsewhere around the NHL, Patrick Kane became the fifth American player to score 500 goals last night, Connor McDavid extended his point streak to 17 (!!!) games, and the Avalanche scored eight goals in a win over the Senators.

The Avs, runaway favorites to win the Cup in June, now have the league leaders in points, goals, and save percentage, along with leading the league in GF/G and GA/G.

They’re good, I guess is the main point here. Thank you for reading my insight.

Anyways, what’s on tap for today?

Public Skate: Bruins vs. Rangers

gettyimages-2249029583.jpg

Welcome to the weekend, folks!

The Bruins will host the New York Rangers at TD Garden in an early afternoon game, making it one of those times where a standalone preview doesn’t make a ton of sense.

Instead, you get: the Public Preview! Preview Skate? Either way, it’s a two-for-one deal.

  • When: Today, 1 PM
  • Where: TD Garden – Boston, MA
  • How to follow: ABC, 98.5 The Sports Hub
  • Opposing perspective: Blueshirt Banter

The Rangers come into this game second-last in the Metropolitan Division with 46 points, tied with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The Rangers find themselves five points out of the second wild card spot with a bunch of teams in between, so it’s fair to say it’s been a very disappointing season on Broadway thus far.

Igor Shesterkin suffered a lower-body injury against Utah earlier this week, putting him on injured reserve. The Rangers will turn to Jonathan Quick in net in the meantime.

Overall, the Rangers have lost five of their last six games, with two of those losses coming beyond regulation.

As you may remember, the Bruins already hosted the Rangers once this season, losing 6-2 on Black Friday.

Should be a good one.

Bruins! Rangers!

Bruins RECAP: Bruins drop 10 on Rangers!

Hell fucking YES they dropped 10 on New York!

There are so many goals in this game and there’s a back-to-back that I decided to just give you the highlights of all of them.

…The Boston Bruins put belt to ass for 60 straight minutes. 10-2 Bruins Win!

Game Notes

  • Your TOI Leader was Charlie McAvoy, who had 21:26 logged last night.
  • The Bruins got to see what the New York Rangers are without their vaunted goaltender Igor Sheshterkin, and as it turns out, the New York Rangers suck out loud. The Bruins were allowed gorgeous opportunities to score all night, and with Sheshterkin out, the Rangers defense was effectively bullied all night, forcing a goalie change and a historic night in Boston.
  • Khusnutdinov and Pavel Zacha had hat tricks tonight; as I’m sure you’ve read this is the first time since 1964 since the Bruins have ever had two players record double hatties on home ice.
  • In the middle of all this it can be easy to lose the guys who didn’t get hat tricks, but this was a phenomenal night for Fraser Minten, who got two goals, and Charlie McAvoy, who got his 2nd of the year. Good for both of them!
  • David Pastrnak had the first 6 point game in almost 50 years for the Boston Bruins, joining Ken Hodge and Bobby Orr as the only players in team history to do such a thing. Just another moment on the pile for the legend. What a special player.
  • I’m sure this game will produce some all-timer whining from JT Miller.
  • Jeremy Swayman, now properly rested and to be clear, was not doing nothing all game, had a pretty good finish; .931 SV% on 29 shots is nothing to sneeze at. Now, let’s make absolutely sure Korpi starts today. Okay?
  • The last time the Bruins scored 10 in a game was back in 1988, when they absolutely pasted the Blackhawks in a 10-3 contest. That game featured Cam Neely with a 7 point night, Craig Janney with a 3 assist night, Steve Kasper with two goals, and 5 other Bruins scoring in that contest. Tidy bit of work by the B’s tonight. Tidy bit indeed.

The Bruins continue things on today against the Pens! That game is at 5pm EST.

See you there!

Morning Skate: Double

gettyimages-2255236913.jpg

Welcome to a new week, folks!

Hopefully you had yourselves a productive, post-holiday-haze week last week, as now we just have…January. Always a nice time to live in this part of the world.

The Bruins had themselves about as good a weekend as you could hope for, beating the New York Rangers on Saturday and the Pittsburgh Penguins a little more than 24 hours later.

The Rangers game was a 10-2 beating on national TV, while the Penguins win was a satisfying 1-0 shutout for Joonas Korpisalo.

For many local sports fans, Sunday’s game was little more than an appetizer for that night’s Patriots game, but for Korpisalo and the Bruins, a 27-save shutout could go a long way toward rebuilding confidence — both for Korpisalo himself and for the team’s confidence in him.

(As an aside, I can understand those who appreciate the artistry of a defensive showdown in football, but that Patriots-Chargers game was a pretty bad game to watch.)

The B’s were given today completely off after the busy back-to-back weekend. They’ll be back in action tomorrow night, hosting the Detroit Red Wings for an Original 6/Atlantic Division showdown.

Those same Red Wings are in action on Monday night, hosting the Carolina Hurricanes, so the schedule may do the Bruins a bit of a favor in that regard.

Tuesday’s game will be a TNT/HBO Max game.

The Red Wings, as of Monday morning, remain atop the Atlantic Division, continuing an impressive run of play for them.

Things remain very tight in the division, with just seven points separating the top six teams.

Even the Leafs have played their way out of the basement to within a point of the second wild card spot, so things are getting interesting.

It still feels like it’ll be “Tampa, Florida, someone else” at the end, but I guess time will tell.

What’s on tap for today?

Public Skate: Bruins vs. Penguins

Fresh off of dropping 10 goals on the New York Rangers, the Bruins are right back on TD Garden ice this evening to host the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Some basics:

  • When: Today, 5 PM
  • Where: TD Garden – Boston, MA
  • How to follow: NESN, 102.5 FM*
  • Opposing perspective: Pensburgh

*I haven’t been able to find official confirmation of the radio broadcast, but considering the Patriots game starts at 8 and they’re broadcast on 98.5 The Sports Hub, I’m guessing there will be a lengthy pre-game show that bumps the Bruins to 102.5

The Penguins also played yesterday, hosting the Calgary Flames. The Flames won that game, 2-1, ending Pittsburgh’s six-game winning streak.

If you’re a Patriots fan, consider this evening’s game a nice appetizer for the playoff showdown at Gillette tonight.

If you’re not, well…happy Sunday?

  • How to follow: NESN, TNT, HBO Max, 98.5 The Sports Hub
  • Opposing perspective: Winging It Motown

Know your enemy

  • 27-15-4, 58PTS, 1st in the Atlantic Division
  • Lucas Raymond: 14G-34A-48PTs; Alex DeBrincat: 23G-23A-46PTS; Dylan Larkin: 23G-19A-42PTS
  • John Gibson: 16-9-1, 2.75 GAA, .902 save percentage; Cam Talbot: 11-6-3, 2.99 GAA, .888 save percentage

Game notes

  • The Boston Bruins will look to keep their hot streak going as the Atlantic-leading Detroit Red Wings roll into town tonight equally as hot right now.
  • The Red Wings faced the Carolina Hurricanes last night so hopefully that will play to the Bruins’ favor. Detroit also celebrated one of its greats last night, retiring Sergei Fedorov’s No. 91 jersey. It’s a retiring numbers type of week!
  • The Bruins collected four big points this weekend in two games that couldn’t have been more polar opposites but equally satisfying. From a 10-goal game to shutting out their opponent, the weekend had it all and the team will look to carry those good vibes into this game.
  • With Sunday’s lone, game-winning goal, Viktor Arvidsson heads into tonight on a four-game point streak with two goals and two assists — and six points in his last six games.
  • David Pastrnak rightfully so earned the third star of the week capping things off with his six-point game Saturday. He now has 14 points in his last six games.
  • For Detroit, James va Riemsdyk has seven points with two goals and five assists in his last five games.
  • This is the third meeting between the two clubs this season. The Bruins are 1-1-0 against them, beating Detroit in a 3-2 shootout win on Nov. 29 and falling 5-4 to them on Dec. 2.
  • Head-to-head, these two are evenly matched when it comes to the power play with the Red Wings literally 0.1% better at 24.7% to the Bruins’ 24.6%.
  • The B’s were off yesterday so there is no update on whether Morgan Geekie will miss any more time due to personal reasons.
  • In other news: The Bruins signed Jonathan Aspirot to a two-year contract extension this past weekend.
  • See ya tonight!

The Boston Bruins are set to face off against the Detroit Red Wings tonight and look to keep momentum going from this weekend’s wins!

It will no doubt be a tough test for the B’s with Detroit continuing to be the best in the Atlantic. But the Bruins will hope that catching them on the tail-end of a back-to-back plays to their favor.

Preview: Bruins to send No. 33 to rafters before game against Kraken

gettyimages-1185117749.jpg

Just the facts

  • When: Tonight, 8 PM
  • Where: TD Garden – Boston, MA
  • How to follow: NESN, 98.5 The Sports Hub
  • Opposing perspective: Davy Jones’ Locker Room

Know your enemy

  • 21-15-8, 50PTS, 3rd in the Pacific Division
  • Jordan Eberle: 16G-13A-29PTs; Matty Beniers: 9G-20A-29PTS; Chandler Stephenson: 11G-16A-27PTS
  • Joey Daccord: 12-10-5, 2.83 GAA, .903 save percentage; Philipp Grubauer: 9-3-2, 2.25 GAA, .924 save percentage

Game notes

  • Yes, there is a hockey game tonight, but another number will be headed to the rafters before it! The Bruins will celebrate Zdeno Chara in a pregame number retirement ceremony slated to start at 6:20 p.m. as his No. 33 joins all the other Bruins’ greats. For anyone going to the game, there is a “Gold Carpet” with Patrice Bergeron, Tim Thomas, Ray Bourque, Dennis Seidenberg and Andrew Ference in attendance. That all happens around 4:15 p.m.
  • The Boston Bruins are looking to extend their winning ways tonight as the Seattle Kraken come to the TD Garden. The Bruins are on a four-game winning streak, and more impressively, a two-game shoutout streak. The two shutout wins earned both goalies their first shutouts of the season.
  • The Bruins have outscored their opponents 18 to 3 in that time span.
  • Seattle comes to Boston on the tail end of a back-to-back after facing New Jersey last night. They are in the middle of a five-game road trip.
  • But it wasn’t long ago that these two teams saw each other. The Kraken handed the Bruins their last lost on Jan. 6 as Seattle topped them 7-4. It was a back and forth game until the Bruins dug themselves into a four-goal hole, only coming within two scores with minutes left in the third period. In that game, Pastrnak scored twice. Four goals combined between the two teams were power play goals. Catton picked up his first two goals of the season for the Kraken in the contest
  • For the Bruins, Pavel Zacha has four goals in his last five games, with three of those coming from Saturday’s 10-2 win. For Seattle, Berkly Catton has four goals as well in his last five games.
  • Head-to-head, the Bruins hold the advantage on special teams at 24.6% on the power play and 79.4% on the PK. The Kraken are 22.4% on the man advantage and last in the league on the penalty kill at 71.4%.
  • In honor of Chara, we’d love for you to share your favorite moments from his 1 years here! We’re sure there are some…to say the least!
  • See ya tonight!

Recap: Bruins stay hot with shutout win over Red Wings

gettyimages-2255589923.jpg

A strong third period and 24 saves from Jeremy Swayman propelled the Bruins to their fourth win in a row last night, as they beat the Detroit Red Wings 3-0 at TD Garden.

Pavel Zacha, Fraser Minten, and Mark Kastelic each scored for the Bruins, who moved into the first wild card spot with the win.

While the game was evenly played for the first two periods, the Bruins stepped on the gas and pulled away from Detroit in the third.

They outshot the Wings 16-2 in the final period, with Minten’s early goal making it 2-0 before Kastelic sealed the deal with an empty-net goal.

After a scoreless first period, Zacha got the scoring started midway through the second when he beat Cam Talbot with a wrist shot to make it 1-0 Bruins.

View Link

It would remain 1-0 until four minutes into the third period, when Minten finished a nice effort play by Charlie McAvoy to make it 2-0 Bruins.

View Link

Detroit pulled Talbot early, with Kastelic’s empty-netter coming with just under four minutes to go in the game.

3-0, Bruins win.

Game notes

  • While this game comes with the caveat of Detroit having played at home on Tuesday night, it was impressive to see the Bruins turn up the intensity in the third period before putting the game away. Detroit can point to tired legs, but the B’s deserve credit for playing a solid all-around game.
  • The shutout was the first of the season for Swayman, which is a bit surprising given how well he has played for long stretches of the year.
  • Minten’s goal was his 11th of the season as he quietly moves into fourth on the team in goals. At this point, it goes without saying that the Brandon Carlo trade is looking like a home run for the Bruins.
  • David Pastrnak had an assist on Minten’s goal, the 889th point of his Bruins career. Per the NHL, that assist moved him ahead of Bobby Orr and into seventh place on the Bruins all-time scoring list. NOT BAD.
  • At some point, we should probably all stop and reflect on just how good Pastrnak has been for so long, but maybe it’s too early in the season for wistful reminiscing.
  • The B’s managed to limit penalties again tonight, giving Detroit just two opportunities on the man advantage.
  • It’s far too early to seriously talk standings, but Detroit’s loss dropped them out of first in the Atlantic, a spot they’d occupied for a while. Tampa now sits in first place, having won 11 games in a row. They’re a point ahead of Detroit but have three games in hand, so…yeah.

The Bruins will be back in action on Thursday night, hosting the Seattle Kraken. That game will start at 8 PM due to Zdeno Chara’s pregame jersey retirement ceremony, so be sure to tune in early.

Preview: Bruins hit the road to face the Blackhawks

gettyimages-2239618513.jpg

Just the facts

  • When: Tonight, 8 PM
  • Where: United Center – Chicago, IL
  • How to follow: NESN, 98.5 The Sports Hub
  • Opposing perspective: Second City Hockey

Know your enemy

  • 19-21-7, 45PTS, 6th in the Central Division
  • Connor Bedard: 19G-27A-46PTS; Tyler Bertuzzi: 24G-13A-37PTS; Andre Burakovsky: 10G-19A-29PTS
  • Spencer Knight: 13-13-6, 2.61 GAA, .910 save percentage

Game notes

  • The Bruins begin a brief two-game road trip with a stop in Chicago to face the Blackhawks, who remain on the fringe of the wild card picture in the Western Conference.
  • This is the second meeting of the season between these two teams, with the first ending in a 4-3 OT win for the Bruins back on Oct. 9. Fraser Minten scored the winner in that game.
  • The Blackhawks have lost two games in a row and three of four. Prior to that, however, they had won four in a row (and had points in five straight). The Bruins, as you likely remember, are hitting the road with five consecutive wins in their pocket.
  • With a bunch of young players, you wouldn’t expect Chicago to be near the top of the league in penalty killing — but that’s where they find themselves, with the second-best PK mark in the league at 85%.
  • Brief Bruin Tyler Bertuzzi has been great for the Blackhawks this season. With 24 goals, he has already eclipsed his goal output from the past two seasons (23 last year, 21 the year before) and we’re barely halfway through the season.
  • Matt Grzelcyk is another former Bruin plying his trade in Chicago. The defenseman has appeared in all 47 of Chicago’s games this season, averaging 17 minutes TOI. He also has 11 assists.
  • David Pastrnak continues his ceaseless production for the B’s, with 1G-8A-9PTS in his last five games. That’s pretty good.
  • Per the Chicago Sun-Times, many members of the Blackhawks’ 2013 Stanley Cup-winning team may be in attendance tonight as part of their ongoing centennial celebrations. Hey, at least it’s a NESN broadcast for us, so you shouldn’t be subjected to too many horrifying flashbacks.

See ya tonight!

LOL oh look at the Bruins acting like they're hot stuff with their little winning streak! 🙄

I gotta admit though, and it PAINS me to say this, Swayman finally getting his first shutout of the season is pretty solid. Kid's been playing well all year so it was bound to happen eventually.

But let's talk about what REALLY matters here - you guys are getting all excited about beating Detroit on a back-to-back and Seattle who can't kill a penalty to save their lives (71.4% PK, YIKES). Real impressive schedule there, Boston!

That said, the Chara ceremony should be pretty cool. Big Z was an absolute UNIT and even I can respect what he did for your franchise. 14 years is no joke. Dude was still playing at like 46 years old or whatever, just out there terrorizing people with that reach.

Also Tyler Bertuzzi with 24 goals already for Chicago?? You guys let him walk and now he's lighting it up. Classic Bruins asset management right there! 😂

Pastrnak passing Bobby Orr on the all-time scoring list is actually legit impressive though. Pasta's been criminally underrated his whole career IMO.

Anyway, enjoy the road trip. Maybe don't choke against the rebuilding Blackhawks while their 2013 Cup team watches from the stands? That would be embarrassing even by YOUR standards!

GO BILLS! GO SABRES! 🦬

Welcome to Saturday evening, folks! Hopefully you had yourself a decent day.

Playoff football, cold weather, etc. All that stuff.

Now, you get to feast your eyes on Original 6 hockey, as the Bruins begin a short road trip with a game at United Center in Chicago.

The Bruins are bringing plenty of good vibes with them to Chicago, and the last game played between these two teams was a pretty entertaining affair, so…we should get our money’s worth tonight.

Welcome to Friday, folks!

After months of planning, the Bruins finally held their number retirement ceremony for Zdeno Chara last night, with the big man’s family raising #33 to the TD Garden rafters.

(He’s got a pretty good #33 neighbor in those rafters in green and white too, huh?)

The ceremony and accompanying festivities were quite a nostalgia trip, from master of ceremonies Andrew Ference to Tim Thomas to David Krejci and a whole bunch of people in between.

There was even a Jack Edwards appearance!

— NESN (@NESN) January 15, 2026

Overall, it was a great evening and a very nice ceremony put on by the team.

We should see something similar in a year or two for Patrice Bergeron.

After all of that, there was actually a hockey game to be played, and the B’s managed another win, beating Seattle 4-2.

The Bruins jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Seattle got one back, then Mark Kastelic scored a shorthanded goal in the second period (while Bergeron, appropriately, was in the NESN booth) to make it 3-1. That goal stood up as the game-winner.

Marat Khusnutdinov, Viktor Arvidsson, and David Pastrnak (ENG) scored the other Bruin goals, while Jeremy Swayman made 26 saves.

The highlights, in case you missed the game:

View Link

Andrew Peeke ended up leaving the game with a lower-body injury and didn’t return, so we’ll wait for an update on his status.

Overall, it was a pretty good game for the Bruins, though they did allow four Seattle power plays and two PPGs.

Hopefully old habits aren’t creeping back in, as it had been a nice stretch of games with limited shorthanded situations.

The Bruins finished their homestand with a perfect 5-0-0 record, and perhaps most impressively, they only allowed five goals in those five games.

Something to build on, that’s for sure.

The B’s will be off today, aside from traveling to Chicago, where they’ll face the Blackhawks tomorrow night at 8 PM.

What’s on tap for today?
