The Toronto Blue Jays reside in arguably one of the toughest divisions in all of Major League Baseball in the American League East.
With teams like the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays, and Baltimore Orioles, winning a division title is tough every single season.
While the Blue Jays haven’t won a division title since 2015, they are making moves this offseason to give themselves a better chance in 2025.
The Blue Jays have added some key pieces this offseason including outfielder Anthony Santander and pitcher Max Scherzer.
While those moves are good for the Blue Jays, MLB Analyst Keegan Matheson revealed the one piece they still need to add.
“If they were to go out, using Alonso as the best example, and add another big bat, suddenly this offense is capable of winning games too,” Matheson said via MLB Network on ‘X.’What's the next move for the Blue Jays following the reported signing of Max Scherzer?@KeeganMatheson talks through the team's recent acquisitions and the potential for adding more power to the lineup. pic.twitter.com/7VO014OMz5

Matheson believes that the Blue Jays need to add another big offensive weapon to their lineup, and then their team will be dangerous in 2025.
With free agents Pete Alonso and Alex Bregman still available, the Blue Jays have a couple of options if they choose to go down that route.
Alonso played in 162 games for the New York Mets in 2024 where he batted .240 with 34 home runs, 88 RBIs, and a .788 OPS.
The Blue Jays will need some offensive firepower if they want to keep pace with teams like the Yankees and Red Sox and stay competitive in the AL East.
It will be interesting to see if the Blue Jays pursue another big hitter before the start of the 2025 season.

The Toronto Blue Jays missed the postseason for the first time in the past three seasons after finishing with a record of 74-88 and last in the American League East.
Although the Blue Jays made the postseason in 2022 and 2023, they were swept in the wild-card round each time.
This offseason has been relatively disappointing for Toronto after it failed to acquire multiple players it was pursuing including Juan Soto, Corbin Burnes and Roki Sasaki.
Though the Blue Jays missed out on those players, they finally broke through by signing outfielder Anthony Santander from the Baltimore Orioles.
Now, one MLB insider is reporting that talks with another prominent free agent are heating up.
“Talks between Pete Alonso and the Blue Jays are ‘advancing,’ per a source with knowledge. Not done yet and no guarantee that it gets there,” SNY insider Andy Martino wrote on X.Talks between Pete Alonso and the Blue Jays are “advancing,” per a source with knowledge. The Alonso negotiations have been dragging on for weeks, and there have been reports of him talking to multiple teams.
Although Alonso has played all six seasons of his MLB career with the New York Mets, they don’t appear to be willing to pay the first baseman the money he wants.
In 2024, he played 162 games and batted .240 with 34 home runs, 88 RBIs and a .788 OPS.
The Blue Jays and Alonso will be worth keeping an eye on to see if they can agree on a deal.

The Toronto Blue Jays finished a disappointing 2024 season with a record of 74-88, which landed them in last place in the American League East.
After making the postseason in 2022 and 2023, the Blue Jays finished with their first losing record since 2019 and missed the playoffs.
The offseason started slowly for the Blue Jays after missing out on free agents Juan Soto, Corbin Burnes and Roki Sasaki, but is beginning to pick up with their signing of Anthony Santander.
While signing Santander is a good start, the Blue Jays hope to land even more talent before the start of the 2025 season.

The Blue Jays proved they have money that they are willing to spend.
Alonso has played all six seasons of his MLB career for the New York Mets.
In 2024, Alonso played in all 162 games and batted .240 with 34 home runs, 88 RBIs and a .788 OPS.
Profar debuted in 2012 with the Texas Rangers and has played for four teams in his 11-year MLB career.
In 2024 with the San Diego Padres, Profar played 158 games and batted .280 with 24 home runs, 85 RBIs and a .839 OPS.
Either player would be an improvement to the Blue Jays roster, and they will be a team to keep an eye on as the 2025 season gets closer.

The Toronto Blue Jays have had a rough stretch of baseball over the last few seasons as even when they made the postseason, the result was less than desirable.
Although the Blue Jays made the postseason three out of the last five seasons, all three playoff trips ended with them being swept in the wild-card series.
After missing the postseason in 2024, the Blue Jays went into the offseason looking to improve their lineup and add some big-name free agents.
The Blue Jays were pursuing three big-name players who ended up signing with different teams including Juan Soto, Corbin Burnes, and Roki Sasaki.
Three Blue Jays players were in attendance for the team’s meeting with Sasaki.
According to MLB Analyst Ben Nicholson-Smith via Foul Territory on ‘X,’ Bo Bichette, Daulton Varsho, and Chad Green were in attendance for the Sasaki meeting.

When looking at the players who attended the Sasaki meeting, one name that is noticeably not there is Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
While Bichette, Varsho, and Green are all good players, Guerrero Jr. is the face of the Blue Jays and was not in attendance for the meeting.
Sasaki eventually signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers, but the Blue Jays appeared to give their best efforts to bring him to Toronto.
The 23-year-old starting pitcher comes to the Dodgers from Japan this offseason.
In 2024 with his overseas team, Sasaki appeared in 18 games where he held a record of 10-5 with a 2.35 ERA and 129 strikeouts in 111.0 innings pitched.
The Blue Jays will continue their search to add talent this offseason, but not getting Sasaki after putting in that much effort has to hurt.

The Toronto Blue Jays reside in one of the toughest divisions in all of Major League Baseball, the American League East.
In a division that includes teams like the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, and Baltimore Orioles, the Blue Jays need to stay aggressive in the offseason to keep up.
While the Blue Jays tried to be aggressive and pursued multiple free agents including Juan Soto, Corbin Burnes, and Roki Sasaki, they were unable to sign any of these big-name players.
The Blue Jays finally broke through however as they signed free-agent outfielder Anthony Santander from the Baltimore Orioles.
According to MLB Network on ‘X,’ the projected starting lineup for the Blue Jays after signing Santander was released.

MLB fans took to social media to express their reactions to the Blue Jays’ projected lineup.
The reactions by fans appeared to be split, with some of them saying the lineup looks good, and the others suggesting that they need at least one more bat.
Santander is 30 years old and comes over from the Orioles where he played for the last eight seasons after coming into the league with them in 2017.
In 2024, Santander played in 155 games where he batted .235 with 44 home runs, 102 RBIs, and a .814 OPS.
Santander had career highs in runs scored, home runs, RBIs, and walks in 2024, which should give the Blue Jays hope that he can repeat that production in the future years.
The Blue Jays will likely stay in pursuit of other free agents this offseason, but they finally broke through and signed one of the big-name players they wanted.

The Toronto Blue Jays and their fans have had a disappointing offseason thus far.
After pursuing multiple top free agents, they have been unable to sign any of them.
Some of the players that the Blue Jays fell short on include the top free agent Juan Soto, the top starting pitcher free agent Corbin Burnes, and starting pitcher free agent Roki Sasaki.
However, the Blue Jays finally broke through in free agency as they signed outfielder Anthony Santander, who came over to the Blue Jays from the Baltimore Orioles.
MLB Analyst Ari Alexander revealed an interesting detail about Santander’s contract with the Blue Jays.
According to Alexander’s personal ‘X’ account, Santander’s contract has more than $35 million deferred, which, depending on how the contract plays out, can exceed $50 million.

The deal was initially reported to be worth $92.5 million for five years, which was reported by Santander’s team.
While the contract specifics can get confusing, the Blue Jays finally got a big free agent signing that they have been trying for all offseason long.
Santander, who is 30 years old, joined the league in 2017 with the Orioles.
He played for all eight seasons of his MLB career.
In 2024, Santander had a career year.
He played in 155 games and batted .235, with 44 home runs, 102 RBIs, and a .814 OPS.
Deferred money in contracts appears to be becoming more popular, as Shohei Ohtani’s deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers last offseason contained mostly deferred money.
Santander will look to continue his power numbers in 2025 with his new team and help them get back into the postseason.

The Toronto Blue Jays missed the postseason for the first time in the last three seasons after finishing with a record of 74-88 and coming in last place in the American League East.
After a tough season, the Blue Jays came into the offseason with high hopes of adding some big names to their roster, but things did not go as planned.
The Blue Jays were reportedly pursuing multiple free agents, including Juan Soto, Corbin Burnes, and Roki Sasaki, but they ultimately missed out on them.
While the Blue Jays missed out on multiple players, they didn’t give up.
They just signed outfielder Anthony Santander from the Baltimore Orioles.
MLB Analyst A.J. Ramos revealed what Santander will bring to the Blue Jays team in 2025.
“Talk about his bat and what he brings to accommodate and help out Vladdy,” Ramos said via MLB Network Radio on Sirius XM.INSTANT REACTION![]()

Ramos mentions that Santander will be a good addition to help out Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the Blue Jays lineup, as Guerrero was responsible for most of the offensive production in 2024.
Ramos also points out that Santander should be a good addition to the clubhouse and should not cause drama for the team.
Santander has played eight MLB seasons in his career, and they all came with the Orioles.
In 2024, Santander played in 155 games, where he batted .235 with 44 home runs, 102 RBIs, and a .814 OPS.
The Blue Jays will need as much talent as possible to compete with the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox in the AL East.

The Toronto Blue Jays’ offseason has left a lot to be desired as the team has not acquired any big-name players thus far.
Some of the moves the Blue Jays have made include acquiring pitcher Jeff Hoffman, pitcher Yimi Garcia, pitcher Nick Sandlin, pitcher Josh Walker, second baseman Andres Gimenez and outfielder Myles Straw.
With none of these players likely to make a big impact in 2025, the Blue Jays need to make a splash move if they wish to truly compete for an American League East title.
The Blue Jays could have something in mind for that needed move, however, and a trade they made could help with that.
“The Blue Jays have acquired an additional $2 million in international bonus pool money that could be to sign starting pitcher free agent Roki Sasaki,” Foul Territory wrote on X.The @BlueJays have acquired an additional $2 Million in International Bonus Pool money – is it destined to go to Roki Sasaki? pic.twitter.com/hzSuAr4C8f
— Foul Territory (@FoulTerritoryTV) January 17, 2025
The Blue Jays acquired Straw from the Cleveland Guardians along with the international bonus signing pool space.
Though the outfielder won a Gold Glove Award in 2022, the big takeaway from this trade is the extra money the Blue Jays got to possibly sign Sasaki.
The 23-year-old starting pitcher is coming over from Japan this offseason.
In 2024, Sasaki appeared in 18 games and was 10-5 with a 2.35 ERA and 129 strikeouts in 111.0 innings pitched.
The Blue Jays know they need to remain aggressive due to the strength of their division, and signing Sasaki could be a pivotal move if they want to be competitive in 2025.

The Toronto Blue Jays missed the postseason for the first time in the past three seasons after finishing with a record of 74-88.
It was the first time since 2013 that the Blue Jays finished last in the American League East.
In a division with the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles, the Blue Jays have some top-end competition.
While the Blue Jays’ offseason has been underwhelming thus far, MLB insider Jon Heyman gave an update on their star player, Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
“Don’t count on any Vlad trade (not too likely!) but if the Jays don’t up their offer (we are thinking $400M plus) there’s a decent chance he’ll be a free agent,” Heyman wrote on X.https://t.co/xUxQPwj4fi. — Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) January 17, 2025
Guerrero has been a staple in the Blue Jays lineup since coming into the league in 2019.
In 2024, Guerrero played 159 games and batted .323 with 30 home runs, 103 RBIs and a .940 OPS.
The Blue Jays are working on extending his contract before he becomes a free agent after this coming season, but Heyman reports that they need to offer more money to get that done.
While the likelihood of Guerrero being traded appears to be unlikely, the team would be losing one of the league’s best players if he were to walk after the season.
The Blue Jays need talent on their roster if they want to compete for a division title, as they haven’t won the AL East since 2015.
Guerrero will be a name to keep an eye on, even though he isn’t a free agent this offseason.

The Toronto Blue Jays have had an underwhelming offseason thus far compared to other American League East teams like the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees.
While the Blue Jays have reportedly been in the mix for big-name players such as Juan Soto and Corbin Burnes, they have been unable to land a star player thus far.
The Blue Jays acquisitions this offseason include pitcher Jeff Hoffman, pitcher Yimi Garcia, pitcher Nick Sandlin, pitcher Josh Walker, and second baseman Andres Gimenez.
Even though the Blue Jays missed out on a couple of star players, there is still one other star player who remains available on the free-agent market.
According to MLB Insider Buster Olney via B/R Walk-Off on ‘X,’ an MLB executive believes the Blue Jays can offer free agent Alex Bregman the most money due to their level of desperation.

The Blue Jays proved that they have money to spend just by being in the mix for players like Soto and Burnes.
By not landing either of those players, the Blue Jays likely have the ability to give Bregman the highest offer and get him to Toronto.
Bregman has played for the Houston Astros his entire career after coming into the league with them in 2016.
In 2024, Bregman played 145 games where he batted .260 with 26 home runs, 75 RBIs, and a .768 OPS.
The Blue Jays have also reportedly been in negotiations with free agent Pete Alonso, so it will be interesting if the team decides to pursue one or the other, or both.
